This ain’t our first rodeo... A range of emotions have been displayed around Queenstown at the news last week of a community outbreak of COVID-19 in South Auckland. Anger, anxiety, a feeling of being let down or even manipulated, inevitability, acceptance, bemusement, dismissiveness. For the most part it is disappointment that we are feeling most. For Queenstown, also concerning is a huge amount of our visitors in the last few months, and their accompanying wallets have been from Auckland. While this has consequences for our local economy, Queenstown has a strong and resilient nature. In November 1999 on the night the Wharf Casino was celebrating its second birthday, the waters of Lake Wakatipu started to invade the town. There was a blitz type excitement as the water slowly made its way onto Marine Parade and into the shops and restaurants in Beach and Rees Streets. By the next day, the water had made its way halfway up the Mall and the short-term excitement made way for long-term concern as the damage and scale of impact to businesses became apparent. The problems did not end there as the water took weeks to recede which dashed any thought most in the CBD had of being back in business for the lucrative summer season. Luckily for those businesses that were prepared and had acknowledged the risk of flood, the insurance companies came to the party and over the following months the town was rebuilt, and businesspeople learnt the importance of having a sensible flood strategy. The insurance companies learnt about the expensive nature of the claims and rewrote their insurance policies accordingly excluding aspects of flood damage. The council worked out ways of mitigating the impact of flooding on the CBD by channelling the Shotover into the Kawarau and developed robust plans for when the lake levels rose again, as they did last November and December.

As with our flood experiences now we have learnt the effects of a global pandemic. Bird Flu, SARS and Swine Flu should have woken us up to the risk, but it took COVID-19 and the experience of lockdown in April and May for businesses to really understand the implications. We have learned what the operating protocols are for our businesses, we have understood the need to work with our staff, landlords and suppliers to survive. The Government wage subsidies, landlord rent relief and supplier terms have softened the effect of that first lockdown blow. Now here we go again. Hopefully, most businesses would have learnt how to operate at Alert Level 2 and have some sort of a plan in place should we go further up the alert levels. Once again, we are in for a tough few weeks or months, it will be penny pinching hard and breakeven would be a stellar result for most. But eventually the flood waters of COVID-19 will recede, and as it does our business community, fingers crossed, will be even stronger for the experience. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

Queenstown is expected to remain at alert level two until next Wednesday, August 26, but Cabinet will review the situation this Friday. Auckland, the centre of the Covid-19 community outbreak, remains at alert level three lockdown. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the extensions are a “short but precautionary hold” which will enable NZ to “stamp out the virus” again. “There is nothing to suggest we need to move to a level 4 lockdown at this stage as we do not have a number of clusters or unrelated cases”. The recent community outbreak has 49 active cases, as of Sunday, with 46 directly linked to the Auckland cluster and the other three under investigation. There are also 20 imported cases in managed isolation facilities The national tracing service has identified 1,535 close contacts of the community cases and contacted 1,322.

By 4pm on Friday, police had stopped 40,865 vehicles at checkpoints around the Auckland, turning around 605 for undertaking nonessential travel. But there was no mention of people being turned around at Auckland Airport. There was concern in the Queenstown community last week about people arriving from Auckland by plane, with eight flights a day from the city. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Friday said Government would review the aviation situation over the weekend. “What we’re going to do over the weekend is look at the way that this is operating at our road checks and we’ll also have a look at the way aviation is working,” she said. There were anecdotal reports of Aucklanders undertaking non essential travel to the regions, but Ardern had no data with her at the press conference to confirm it. At Sunday’s briefing Health Minister Chris Hipkins implored kiwis not to spread gossip and social media conspiracy theory and stick to the facts presented at the daily 1 o’clock health update. This followed what he described as one particular rumour that “spread like wildfire” on social media. Hipkins said the rumour contained a number of “vile slurs”.

PM will review Auckland-Queenstown flights Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern plans to review air travel from Auckland to Queenstown and other regions. Last week the PM was questioned by the media on whether she was satisfied with the rigour on restrictions of movements outside of Auckland.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern changes election date to 17 October Ardern says this date is achievable and contains no greater risk.There’s no suggestion New Zealand will be in elevated alert levels at the time of 19 September. She says participation of voters, ensuring a fair election and certainty that the election is held in a timely way are all key considerations.

She was asked whether the Government would intervene following reports of not-insignificant amount of people flying into Queenstown, Christchurch and elsewhere.

The Covid-19 outbreak in Auckland has forced the suspension of political campaigning and prompted calls to postpone the general election.

Ardern said the goal was to allow people enough time to relocate home, but that sometimes took a little longer than the order cut-off.

Earlier today, Health Minister Chris Hipkins told Morning Report there isn’t a risk-free option.

“What we’re going to do over the weekend is look at the way that this is operating at our road checks and we’ll also have a look at the way aviation is working,” she said “I’m picking up on some of the anecdote that we’re hearing, so we will reflect on whether we need to look again at the way we’re operating at the aviation border.”

“Who knows what may happen in any given week or month,” he said. “The question the prime minister will be weighing up today is what’s the best thing from a logistical perspective in making sure that everybody can vote and everybody’s vote can be counted.” Meanwhile, Green Party co-leader James Shaw said calls for a delay to the election were politicking. “I think it’s 100 percent electioneering. There are some political parties who are clearly prioritising their electoral fortunes over the health of our communities and strength of our democracy and I think that’s extremely disappointing.” New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has said he wants the election delayed, saying there is now no ability to conduct a free and fair election on 19 September. The decision is solely in the hands of Ardern, who took the weekend to look at the latest advice from justice officials and spoke to a number of different people.

Queenstown App reported on Wednesday that eight flights landed from Auckland that day, including four after the midday lockdown came into force. Flights have continued from the city over the past two days. The Otago Daily Times interviewed travellers at the airport, some of whom were Aucklanders who had decided to go on holiday despite the lockdown. Ardern was asked whether passenger flows tallied with the volume of people going home. “We know that from within Auckland it’s actually lower than it was last time we were in level 3 so that gives us something about the intraAuckland regional travel,” she said. “I don’t have the data around between regions but it is something we’ll look at over the weekend.”

Wilderness project’s super-smart idea A prefabricated square-metre of wilderness that can be delivered by forklift truck. It sounds like something from a science-fiction novel, set in a world after an apocalyptic ecological breakdown, where the wealthy can buy a sliver of the way things used to be. Instead, it is a Queenstown green entrepreneurial firm’s new venture, which tackles several environmental problems at once and for the last few months has been helping divert more than 60% of food waste from local supermarkets. Wilding & Co announced Waste to Wilderness back in May and plans to launch it fully later this year. Since 2014, Wilding & Co - run by Michael Sly and Mathurin Molgat has been clearing thousands of invasive Douglas Fir from the local landscapes and producing steam-distilled essential oil from the pine needles, which is then sold to American firm doTERRA.

Sly has calculated composting 2.5 tonnes will remove 5.675 tonnes of equivalent CO2 emissions of methane removed from atmosphere per week. That’s close to the same as a round-the-world flight for one passenger, or running an average family car for a whole year. Halving food waste by 2030 is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and Waste to Wilderness’ work ties in with that of The New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 organisation, which is working to achieve that goal. Sly reckons, in partnership with Kiwi Harvest, the schemes in the past few months are diverting 60-70% of Queenstown’s supermarket food waste, and that could reach 80-90%. “The next step is, around the place we have a lot of wood pallets which are used for the transport of goods which reach the end of life in Queenstown. “Outside of being used for firewood, the idea is they become a structural base for the compost to grow native trees.

doTERRA sells it as pure oil, in soaps and other products, distributing it worldwide. Essentially, the arrangement allows Wilding & Co to turn a New Zealand pest into a product, paying for its own eradication.

“It’s a great modular approach that could be used for planting our trails or our roadside reserves. You wouldn’t do the side of a cliff face with it, more rural/urban large scale planting projects.

The new Waste to Wilderness initiative takes the wood mulch leftover from the distilling process, composts it with food waste from local supermarkets and homes, places it on discarded non-treated pallets, and introduces native seedings.

“You pick it up with a small landscape tractor - like a forklift with pallets at Mainfreight - and you drive this live pallet to the location. You drop off pallets of native plants to a desired location.

Michael Sly says: “Basically, the idea is the convergence of three waste streams.

“The idea is that by palletising it, you’re creating a prefabricated square metre of wilderness.”

“The wood mulch from the wilding pines is a very good base for composting, so a base to absorb our food waste.” He has set up large drop-off bins on Speargrass Flat Road where anyone can drop off their household food scraps. But over the past three months, he’s moved on to stockpiling supermarket food waste - about 2.5 tonnes a week. “We come in behind Kiwi Harvest. They collect as much food as possible, and that’s balanced for food baskets and so forth, and then we take everything that can’t be used for human or animal consumption. “So that tends to be a lot of white bread and things like that. That’s mixed with the wood chip from the wilding pines and generates a nutrient rich compost.”

And it really is wilderness. Rather than a prescribed planting, Sly takes 10cm3 ‘biopsy pods’ from the mature forest floor, containing an unknown spectrum of seedlings, seeds, fungi, microhorizons, leaf litter and insects. Ten of the pods are the planted into the larger nutrient-rich 1m2 pallet planting module. Each pallet becomes an ecosystem in miniature, using self-seeding natives which would otherwise lay dormant on the forest floor for decades, or might never get the sun and space needed to grow. Sly says Waste to Wilderness is another tool in the box for the efforts to repopulate natives in New Zealand. “It’s not the silver bullet for replanting but it raises the conversation about how do we mass replant and the difference between reforestation and what one could term large scale landscaping.” Check out more on the Waste to Wilderness website and follow them on Facebook. Diverting food waste is the first contribution the scheme makes to the environment. When landfilled, food waste produces methane, which is about 30 times worse than carbon dioxide from a climate change perspective.

Stunning Lakes properties clean up at architecture awards Envy-inducing properties in Queenstown and Wanaka have won big at the Southern Architecture Awards. Eighteen homes and commercial buildings across the district won at the peer-reviewed awards programme run by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA).

Winners in the hospitality section include Arrowtown restaurant Aosta, co-owned by millionaire jeweller and golf course owner Michael Hill. Designed by Anna-Marie Chin Architects, the jury said it “demonstrates how a simple and affordable design coupled with a refreshingly ambitious spirit can deliver a laudable outcome for a business client. “Even outside opening hours, the restaurant communicates vibrant appeal.”

That’s the majority of the 23 awards dished out in the awards, which cover the whole of Otago and Southland. Eight projects in the Queenstown Lakes District were recognised in the awards’ Housing category, including three in Queenstown. At Willow House, Queenstown, designed by AQA Alessandro Quadrelli Architetto, “bold forms have been layered on a steep rocky site to make the most of views, sun and opportunities for natural ventilation,” the judging panel said. “The architect’s consciousness of sustainability and thermal comfort means the home’s delighted owners are promised a happy future overlooking Lake Wakatipu.”

Koura Apartments on Gorge Road, by Johnston Architects, was recognised in the commercial category, as it “stands out in a town of numerous short-term rental accommodation options. “The clever deployment of bold forms on the steep site means occupants enjoy beautiful, versatile light-filled spaces offering both privacy and peaceful views to the adjacent ravine.”

Oliver’s Ridge (see main image), Queenstown, by Team Green Architects “demonstrates in an exemplary manner the realisation of a sustainable design philosophy in a large-scale residential development. “Robust exterior materials and rigorous formwork give the house a sense of permanence; this house, one feels, is here to stay for many generations.” Bendemeer House at Lake Hayes, by Assembly Architects, “features a simple and minimal design that celebrates the natural characteristics of the building’s materials. “The house sits lightly on the land, with the living area stepping down in response to the rolling topography, and communicates through its texture and materiality an inviting warmth.”

Wanaka Watersports Facility, designed by Alistair Madill Architects, was also given the nod in the commercial category, with its “richly textured and contoured façade belies the tough functional requirements demanded by a project realised in a sensitive environmental zone. “The design’s sensitivity and a generosity of spirit have won over sceptics, and the facility has become a popular community hub “The building demonstrates the value of architecture that provides valuable social amenity and enhances the life of a town.” The Awards jury convenor, Queenstown architect Stacey Farrell, who was joined on the judging panel by architects Eliska Lewis from Wanaka and Cameron Pollock from Auckland, and broadcaster Marcus Lush, praised the quality of the work submitted in this year’s awards programme. On Wednesday - Queenstown Airport had eight flights arrive from Auckland. And it will be “business as usual” today say airport officials despite Auckland moving to Alert Level 3 lockdown from noon, and the rest of the country moving to Alert Level 2. This story received a massive amount of feedback, particularly about testing including: Common sense says that the passengers are being asked for proof that they reside in Queenstown before letting them on the plane right? I guess seeing if they have return flights to Qtown for a start would help. Regardless of what I think “should happen”, this govt will close the South at a sniff of community transmission in the South Island. Think of those businesses that wont survive another lockdown. I guess those that can book and travel within a day of notice of the Auckland lockdown with the current prices of domestic air travel believe they are wealthy enough not to catch it and spread it. It’s Friday as I write this and, like everyone else, anxiously waiting to hear if we are going to have to go back into lockdown. It was so depressing hearing the news that the sneaky virus was back amongst us - it’s already done brutal damage to so many businesses and families. All of us with children living overseas are aching to be able to see them again. But there is good news for the Wakatipu with lots of exciting things happening bringing loads of dosh into our community - Taika Waititi is in charge (remotely from the USA) of a huge Coca Cola (wish it were a product I had more good feelings about, but never mind…) ad that is being made right here. It’s meant oodles of work for locals and there’s also a very secret and exciting car testing project going on. It just goes to show that we CAN have great business that isn’t all about mass tourism, and shows more than ever how much we need to get that big film studio project happening here as soon as possible. Have you noticed how happy so many real estate agents are? They’ve got good reason - there have been some record prices paid lately and properties that have been on the market for a long time have suddenly been snapped up. Many of the buyers have created very successful NZ businesses, and it can only help the Wakatipu to have these great brains sprinkling some good ideas around. I’ve had plenty of friends from Australia ring to ask about houses they’ve seen advertised - it seems there’s a big appetite for NZ at the moment - no wonder. This really is paradise, and it is no surprise to hear our foreign friends with second homes here are now applying for residency - let’s hope they want to start some good projects here. There’s no doubt that a lot of businesses have taken a massive hit, but the influx of wealthy NZers who are holidaying in Queenstown this year instead of going overseas, is doing a lot to boost the shops and restaurants that have changed tack to cater more for the domestic market. Clever old Charles Darwin came up with the “adapt or become extinct” message a long time ago, and it has never been truer. I wish my rabbits weren’t so good at adapting - I had to make a special trip to Cromwell to buy more Pindone as all local supplies have sold out. As well as the joy of having a good stock of these toxic treats now, I also found a terrific new restaurant in Cromwell called The Stoaker Room - it’s in the Freeway Orchard site near the bridge before you have to decide if you’re going to Dunedin or Christchurch. Absolutely delicious everything. Apparently the carnivores rush in drooling for the huge BBQ meat platters, but the vege brigade are equally well catered for with cauliflower steaks and sensational spuds. Spotting Paul Chisnall who’s been a food whizz forever, there with a group on his excellent wine tour was a very clear sign it was going to be quality nosh. Being on that road meant it was just a 20 min drive to a wonderful vintage and antique shop in the middle of nowhere - 234 Chapman Road near Alexandra, to be precise. It’s called All Vintage and only open at weekends. Duncan is a very clever buyer and I promise I tried not to buy anything but I couldn’t resist essentials like an old cricket set, battered French watering cans and a glorious picnic basket - bring on summer! Actually I’m adoring spring too much to think of summer yet. and my kitchen bench has a lovely snowdrop plant with a tiny green heart on its white petals. It was a present from my friend Marilyn Hanff who’d been down to Larnach Castle’s snowdrop festival in Dunedin. There’s a lot of loveliness around - do take time to notice it.

Queenstown Chamber launches WeAreCommunity with free memberships The Queenstown Chamber of Commerce, with the support of Westpac NZ, is now offering free, individual, memberships to businesspeople who have been made redundant due to Covid-19. The free, 12-month membership, called WeAreCommunity, is aimed at managers, team leaders and supervisors who are committed to remaining in Queenstown and who would like to stay connected to the business community.

“This is a great initiative. We’re pleased to be helping the individuals who will be helping Queenstown find its feet again. These people are passionate about Queenstown and have a wealth of expertise that will be invaluable to the town in the near future.” Members are able to take advantage of attending the Chamber networking and education events, as well as being kept informed on employment initiatives underway across the district

Outgoing CEO Anna Mickell came up with this membership option after recognising that this group of individuals will be essential for a successful return to business in Queenstown.

“I am really pleased that, with Westpac’s help, we can get behind and support this group of people” says Chamber Chair Craig Douglas.

“The calibre and commitment of many people being made redundant is enormous. We all know great people, who through no fault of their own, are no longer in work. I started out washing dishes 20+ years ago and slowly worked my way up the ladder. I worked hard and put in my time. How long have you been in Queenstown and why did you choose to live here? I moved here in 2009, after spending 15 years in Whistler and a couple more in Revelstoke. This is the perfect location, it’s like a mini Canada here but warmer. Recommended must-do activity in and around Queenstown? Discgolf... I love it. One of the best and cheapest things to do in town. Are there any hidden treasures you’d recommend? Get outside... there are so many treasures surrounding us here. What’s your favorite place to eat? I’m literally the worst eater... this industry as ruined my appetite. There are still so many place in town I haven’t been to yet... but if I had to pick a spot... I’d say Amisfield... they have great staff, and an amazing chef, Botswana, Flame and Atlas are pretty close.

Queenstown Ambassador program – connecting with people in ways that make a real difference The Queenstown Ambassador programme is a course designed for people engaging with visitors across the Wakatipu basin. The aim is to create storytellers and ambassadors with real pride in their place – the Queenstown Lakes region. The program is run by the Queenstown Resort College and began over 8 years ago, aimed an empowering our locals and local businesses with knowledge of their own backyard. Although many of us have lived in the district for many years, we may not know the history or the legacies left by those who have gone before us. Through Covid19 we have spent a lot of time in our own bubblesand what a beautiful bubble we have! The Ambassador program reminds us of the tough times that we as a community have faced as a district before, and how the pioneering spirit has always shone through, reminding us to try new things, to be bold, and to be brave. The programme helps to build participants knowledge of history and locations around the Wakatipu to proudly share; to extend their cross-cultural understanding to authentically connect with visitors; and to grow your business by providing simple tools to develop the overall visitor and customer experience. “This is a land where the bold decided to take chances, where the impossible became reality” - Fiona Boyer, NZSki “Being an Ambassador is about sharing our mana with our guests to ensure they have the best experience here in Queenstown” Detroit Hoyes, NZone Skydive Participants engage in a three-hour workshop delving into the history and unique story of Queenstown and surrounding areas, including early Māori history and legends, the experience of early settlers, and how the local economy has evolved up to the present day. The inspiration for this article and now an awareness campaign we have launched, came from a recent celebration of life, when the wife of the person we were celebrating spoke. Arts+Culture VR experience recreates Notre Dame in its former glory In April 2019, the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was badly damaged by fire. Since that time, the inside of the cathedral has been off limits to worshipers and visitors. The square in front of the famous attraction was reopened to the public at the end of May, however, it is difficult to appreciate the impact and scale the tragedy had on the cathedral, without a closer look at the devastation the fire, left behind inside.

What’s On Queenstown Jazz Orchestra Performs with Rodger Fox After a sold out performance in Arrowtown last June, The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra are coming to the Queenstown Memorial Centre, with guest musician RODGER FOX himself. Rodger Fox has been described as the “supremo of swing, the icon of individuality and the chief justice of jazz.” As a performer he leads trios, quartets, combos and big bands, as an administrator he’s artistic director of three annual festivals, as a conductor he has that touch of genius to encourage the right sound and precision from a band and, as senior lecturer, he’s nurtured many students to progress to greater musical glory. When a career as trombonist with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra was denied him in 1970, he turned to jazz, firstly with Quincy Conserve, but then established New Zealand’s pre-eminent big band which remains unparalleled in New Zealand jazz circles today. Rodger is this country’s foremost jazz trombonist, big band leader, jazz educator, arranger, producer, musical director and senior lecturer. While no one can enter the cathedral a new virtual reality (VR) experience about the Notre Dame viewers takes visitors into the cathedral both before and after the fire allowing visitors to once again “step inside.” Titled Rebuilding Notre-Dame, the 360 degree film was made by Chloé Rochereuil and Victor Agulhon, who sold the video to Parisian virtual experiences company, FlyView. Rebuilding Notre Dame is the third VR experience offered by FlyView. FlyView is located near the opera house Palais Garnier. Rebuilding Notre-Dame is really in two parts with the first section telling the history of the cathedral including close-ups of its gargoyles, bells, and sacristy This footage was made three months prior to the fire. The second part include drone images of the cathedral’s blazing fire, of the crowds of shocked onlookers and firemen struggling with the flames on that fateful day, followed by interviews with the cathedrals rector Chauvet, General Jean-Louis Georgelin, who is charge of the cathedral’s reconstruction, and Paris’s mayor Anne Hidalgo. One of the most insightful parts shows the elaborate scaffolding and the interior building site covered in plastic sheeting, which was filmed last December. Since Rebuilding Notre-Dame was launched it has had more than 10,000 visitors with a portion of ticket sales go towards Notre Dame’s reconstruction.
