Thank you Queenstown It has been a privilege serving the community over the past three years as the Member of Parliament for Clutha-Southland. I want to thank you for your support over the past three years and over the past month. I’ve had many messages of support and appreciate the people who have taken time to reach out. I am human and made a stupid mistake. I owned it and have taken responsibility - life is about living and learning. I successfully lobbied the Minister to increase the housing cap here by $100,000. After organising a protest march in 2017, much loved Queenstown family Sam, Dinesha and their three boys were granted permanent residency. A big thank you to the 450 of you who turned up to support this wonderful family. You made the difference. I’ve had many discussions with stakeholders over the years to ensure the old Wakatipu High School site was to be used for housing. I brought the Parliamentary Rugby Team to Queenstown, taking on the late Blair Vining’s Invitational Side raising $14,000 for Garston School and the Blair Vining Sport’s Foundation. We saved the Te Anau rescue chopper base and had a rescue chopper instated here. I’ve lobbied hard for the return of an Immigration New Zealand office and also for a geographic change to allow people in areas like Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate to be eligible for the Accommodation Supplement.

I’ve fought for hundreds of migrants who have made the Lakes District their home. Like Lana McLuskey who I am continuing to fight for in her attempt to gain an exemption. Lana is an essential skills visa holder here in Queenstown who gives one-on-one support three days a week to Levi Vallance who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Grin2B. The disorder means he is non-verbal, nonmobile and requires assistance with everything he does. I have met Lana, Levi and his parents and I could see first-hand the special bond Lana and Levi have. I recently went up to The Remarkables to check out the new ski lift which was made possible after I helped to get an immigration exemption for a specialist ski field splicer. We only had several days to get the exemption before it would have been too late to get one. A shout out to the Wakatipu High School Rugby 1st XV who played hard against John McGlashan College on Saturday – sorry about the ref (yours truly). It’s been a busy three years but I have loved every minute of it. I’ve fought hard for Queenstown and have done everything I possibly could for every person that has come to me for assistance. A special thank you to Paula Denton who has worked tirelessly with me in the Frankton office, who always went above and beyond for our community. Queenstown was given the all clear from Covid-19 last week after more than a thousand locals turned up for voluntary testing Pop-up testing was introduced to ensure there had been no new community transmission of the virus, following the visit between July 1-4 of a man who later tested positive on arrival in South Korea, on July 22. Southern district medical officer of health Dr Susan Jack praised the 1076 people who queued in the Pak’nSave car park on Tuesday for testing. All results were negative. “Covid-19 affected people in many of our Southern cities, towns and small communities and we need to do everything we can to make sure it doesn’t take hold again.” On Sunday, New Zealand marked the 100 days without a case of community transmission. The total number of active cases is 23, all in managed isolation, while the number of confirmed cases overall remains at 1,219, including 22 deaths. Testing was also conducted in Milford last week, with 35 people also testing negative, and elsewhere around the country. Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield thanked everyone who had been tested and those doing the testing. “Achieving 100 days without community transmission is a significant milestone, however, as we all know, we can’t afford to be complacent. “We have seen overseas how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread in places where it was previously under control, and we need to be prepared to quickly stamp out any future cases in New Zealand. “Every person in the team of five million has a role to play in this. “Seek advice from your GP or Healthline on getting a test if you have symptoms of Covid-19 and stay at home if you are unwell. Keep a record of your movements so you can refer to them for contact tracing if required. “Don’t let the team down – none of us can afford to do that.” On Friday, he’d called for people to have face masks ready to use in the event of another outbreak. The Southern District was one of the hardest hit in New Zealand during the first wave of Covid-19, with 216 cases and two deaths. There were 87 cases in Queenstown Lakes District, but no deaths. Dr Jack says: “There has been speculation that some people are becoming complacent about Covid-19, but this response has shown Southerners are practical, realistic and cautious, and realise we have to keep on top of it.” She encouraged Southern residents and visitors to keep doing the basics, especially maintaining hand hygiene and keeping track of movements, and to be prepared.

Queenstown’s transport future detailed Plan for major upgrades to Queenstown’s public transport options and roads are ready for public comment. The comprehensive proposals focus on the route from downtown out to Frankton and beyond, to the suburbs off Ladies Mile (SH6) and to the Kawarau Falls Bridge (SH6A). One of the main objectives is to encourage locals out of their cars and onto buses, ferries, bikes and their own two feet - reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact. The plans include two new public transport hubs - downtown on Stanley Street and at Frankton BP roundabout - along with priority bus lanes, widened footpaths, traffic light junctions, better connections for walking and cycling, streetscape upgrades and more.
Hansby, who is also QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure, said the work is based on extensive modelling and investigation undertaken pre Covid-19. “While our growth story might be on a bit of a detour at the moment, we still need to provide high-quality transport choices for today’s community, as well as continuing to look ahead and ensure our transport system can cope when our district recovers,” he said.
The Government has allocated $90 million to the project, while the $52m downtown streetscape project and $50m stage one of Queenstown arterial bypass both complement the plans. Feedback closes in less than a month, on August 31, 2020. A summary can be read online along an interactive map / feedback form at the council’s Let’s Talk site. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and Otago Regional Council (ORC) are working together as the Way to Go group on the project.
The Stanley Street transport hub, with a new plaza running through Athol Street carpark Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships Jim Harland said that as the region navigates the COVID-19 response, there is a good opportunity to prepare properly for future growth.
Way to Go Board chair Peter Hansby said the emerging programme of work has been developed through a detailed business case process and engagement.
“We know that Kiwis and international visitors love Queenstown and that they will return, and we also know the transport issues need to be addressed to provide the best possible environment for residents and visitors.”
“We’ve landed on a programme of work that we think will result in better movement of people around the Wakatipu basin, improve facilities for walking and cycling and transform the Queenstown town centre into a place people are proud to visit and spend time in.
“Already the NZ Upgrade Programme has seen the Government allocate $90 million to fund some of this programme on SH6 and SH6A. It is important that we hear from the community on how they feel about these plans and how it fits with this emerging programme of work.”

All pop-up test results negative but don’t get complacent ‘Don’t get complacent over Covid’. That’s the message from Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult and DirectorGeneral of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield as New Zealand yesterday marked 100 days without community transmission of the virus. Queenstown Lakes was given the all-clear from Covid-19 last week, after 1076 people turned out for pop-up community testing. All results were negative. “Hearing the results came as a great relief,” Boult said. “However, as Dr. Ashley Bloomfield keeps reminding us, now is not the time to be complacent. “The country is still in Alert Level 1. This means we should practice good hygiene, stay home if we’re sick and keep track of where we’ve been and who we’ve seen. Otago Regional Council Public Transport Manager Garry Maloney said public transport will play a crucial role for an improved, linked up transport solution that will come out of this emerging programme. “Two of the recommendations including priority bus lanes and a dedicated transport hub will vastly improve service levels and customer experience, making catching the $2 bus even more attractive,” he said.

Air New Zealand’s turboprop flights into and out of Queenstown will have fewer bad weather disruptions thanks to new navigation tech. Required Navigation Performance (RNP AR) technology is now operational on the airline’s ATR aircraft serving the resort town. The technology enables pilots to fly to lower altitudes with a more precise and efficient route into the airport, saving fuel and emissions and helping reduce the impact of bad weather on services. In 2016, the airline entered into a partnership with aircraft manufacturer ATR to equip its 68-seat turboprop fleet with RNP AR. Air NZ Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer Captain David Morgan says the aircraft were upgraded with the necessary equipment last year. The benefits of the technology mean that, even when the weather at Queenstown Airport is poor, disruptions to ATR passenger services are expected to be significantly reduced.” The airline has 27 ATR 72-600 aircraft in its fleet. The airline’s larger A320 aircraft, which also operate to and from Queenstown, are already RNP AR enabled.

Surely due to financial effects of Covid on ratepayers and that there will be a levelling of new residents and of visitors, it beggars belief that the council is proposing to place this burden on us. Arts+Culture WHAT TO DO WITH TOPPLED STATUES - One idea When a country has statues of historical figures that no longer reflect its values, what is the best solution? Is there a way of addressing the past without erasing it? As the Black Lives Matter movement in the US draws attention to the symbols of white supremacy and colonialism, their removal has accelerated in recent weeks and months around the world. In New Zealand, the statue of Captain John Hamilton in Hamilton has been removed and there’s even been debate about place names in Queenstown (purportedly, Lake Hayes’ namesake was an unsavoury man). Administrations often resort to removing the offending statue or monument and store them away, out of sight, never to be discussed again.
What’s On Local Author wins Best Short Story in Sir Julius Vogel Awards for Best New Zealand Speculative Fiction Local author and occasional LWB contributor Casey Lucas-Quaid has won the short story award in the 2020 Sir Julius Vogel Awards. Casey’s winning entry was a short story entitled “A Shriek Across The Sky”. The awards were presented at CoNZealand, the 78th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). A closed, in-person ceremony was held in Wellington on July 26, and streamed as part of CoNZealand’s programme.
The Awards recognise excellence and achievement by New Zealanders, both amateur and professional, in the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. They are usually presented at New Zealand’s National Science Fiction Convention which this year, is hosted as part of CoNZealand. SFFANZ president John Toon said, “It’s always a pleasure and an honour to showcase some of the best contemporary New Zealand science fiction and fantasy, and especially so this year, with the eyes of international fandom on us. On behalf of SFFANZ, hearty congratulations to all this year’s Sir Julius Vogel Award winners and nominees.”

Chicago-based conceptual artist JB Daniels has a vision: to create a ‘Toppled Monument Sculpture Park’ in the US city of Chicago on the site of a massive former landfill bounded by the Calumet River and old industrial ruins and wetlands. Daniels’ vision is to recreate the statues in their toppled state with the pedestal and plaques placed nearby. From there the park would help educate visitors about the country’s controversial past, but it will also serve future generations. As Daniel pointed out to The Art Newspaper recently, “Dumps are where archaeologists always go to find out about a civilisation.” There are plenty of statues that would be ideal, especially in the southern states. Statues that are scattered outside law courts and town squares which celebrate Confederate leaders and soldiers who fought to continue the practice of slavery. Creating a park that recognises that the values of society have changed might be a way of recognizing history while also providing some kind of reckoning and context about why the statues were erected in the first place. History should not be hidden and erased, but it should be memorialised in an appropriate way, one which reflects modern values. Perhaps there is room in the Queenstown Gardens for some of our historic figures that have fallen out of favour?

Wakatipu High School’s Generation Give is an inspiration! by Miranda Spary I’m still shocked at the thought of teenagers wanting to stay on at school after classes finish on Friday afternoon to do good. When I was at high school, Fridays were for racing downtown and smoking cigarettes and hoping boys would kiss us.Sometimes even shoplifting. Not at Wakatipu High. Twenty five students are working on not just fundraising projects, but learning about every aspect of philanthropy. Of course, that includes fundraising, but it also means discovering the needs in the community and learning how to run a non-profit enterprise. Watching their board meeting was an eyeopener - everyone knows the rules of meetings, everyone speaks clearly and everyone’s voice gets heard. Not like a lot of adult meetings! Kate Edmonds is the marketing student mentor of Generation Give and I asked her what made her get involved. She’d never heard of philanthropy but on hearing the founding members Hugh Taylor, Christian Belmont and Beatrice Onions so passionate about it, she wanted to get on board as well. 13 year old Max Hey had done the 40 hour famine because he felt so sorry for the children in the videos who didn’t have enough to eat. His cruel parents even took him to a dinner party when he was on his famine. Mucha Milne is 17 and she loves the focus on the local community. Learning about managing a nonprofit and helping this community she’s grown up in are what interests her. Natsune Suzuki is off to study architecture and urban planning at Auckland next year. She realises that finding funding is always a problem and she wants to learn who to give money to, and how to make each dollar given go further. This year Generation Give, a programme of Youth Philanthropy New Zealand, in partnership with the Wakatipu Community Foundation, has $10,000 to give away. The programme is sponsored by Roost Mortgage, Craig Investment Partners, the Hugo Foundation and Dick and Diana Hubbard. Local groups can send in an expression of interest to contact@ypnz.org - the deadline is August 13th, and then formal applications can begin. The team will make site visits and learn how to assess how best to distribute the money. Hugest congrats to them all - I wish my school days had been more about philanthropy, and less about misbehaviour!!
CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Even though the whole world has changed, the normal markers of time keep happening here - weddings, funerals and Queen’s Birthday honours. PJ and Sam of La Rumbla and Slow Cuts fame in Arrowtown invited all their friends (actually, not all - there’s not a big enough venue in the Wakatipu for a crowd that size!) to celebrate PJ’s birthday but it was really a surprise wedding - hugest congrats, you two. And the big crowd who turned up for Jack Allan’s funeral at Lake Hayes were treated to the COLOUR film of Jack and Joan’s 1956 wedding with the bridal car coming down the mall and even without sound, it was pure joy watching those gorgeous young things in their finery. I do hope the museum has a copy of that - the Wakatipu has always been good at celebration. The Lake Hayes pavilion was the perfect setting for Jack’s farewell on a sparkling winter’s day as his body was taken on a final loop of the showground in his original milk delivery truck. And Dame Patsy Reddy came to Millbrook to award well deserved Queen’s Birthday honours to Taylor Reed, Tamsin Orr-Walker and Pip McCann. All these locals have done such a huge amount for our community and losing one of them, especially one like gentleman Jack, should make us all think about what we want people to say and think about us at our funerals. I’m usually snoozing if I have to hear a sermon, but once I heard a journalist turned lay minister give a goodie - he asked everyone to sit for a minute and think about what they most wanted in life. After the minute, he asked if that’s what we would want written in our obituary. Miranda strived all her life for a swimming pool, and she got it? Good reminder. On the subject of good people, Altrusa are having a quiz night on August 18 at the Wakatipu Rugby Club rooms to raise money for Happiness House - look up Queenstown Altrusa on FB or email president.queenstown@altrusa.org.nz - you can have a team of up to 6 so get your mates together for a fun night that will help a lot of people have a happier time. And take time to enjoy the clubrooms as QLDC seem hellbent on destroying those (and the rec ground - can that really be true?) as well as the Memorial Hall, the QT library, and the council offices - apparently they are saying that they won’t pull down the Memorial Hall until a replacement is built but I am suspicious they are going to say the cultural centre in a former furniture shop at Remarkables Park will be an ok substitute. If anyone knows what really is going on, I’d absolutely love to know. Pulling out all those publicly owned facilities from the heart of Queenstown really will be the death of the town. Shane Woolridge’s beautiful sculptures are mostly on private land, although if you do the walk around the far end of the Kelvin Heights peninsula, you will find some of his lovely stone creations - well worth heading over there. But if you love them and want to share the love, head on down to the Arrowtown PO or the museum and you can buy stamps with images of his work - all the money goes to the museum so do ask for them. Apart from the joy of getting an actual letter, a stunning stamp is a rarity too. Fishing for blue cod and prawns in the Wakatipu is a bit of a rarity, but it IS possible. Dorothy Browns in Arrowtown is trialling the idea of fish and chips on the beautiful new balcony bar - we had a fun night letting down a basket on a fishing rod, and reeling in the very delicious fish and chips from Unwind Cafe (very superior F &C if you are an addict, like me) so fingers crossed that it will be all systems go - I’ll keep you posted.

Youngsters will give $10k to charities After the runaway success of its first year, youth philanthropy programme Generation Give returns with another $10k to award to local charities. Twenty five students from Wakatipu High School will review grant applications and make award decisions. They’re calling for expressions of interest from local charities by August 13, after which several charities will be invited to make a formal application for a grant up to $2,500. The programme, based on similar initiatives in the US, has been created by the Youth Philanthropy New Zealand team of Hugh Taylor, Beatrice Onions, and Christian Belmont in partnership with the Wakatipu Community Foundation. The aim is to encourage youngsters to give and serve in their communities and make philanthropy a habit for future generations.

The 25 students form the Wakatipu Generation Give Council and will be mentored by adult volunteers, helping them learn about leadership, volunteerism, nonprofit governance, grant making skills and the role philanthropy plays in communities. Jennifer Belmont, CEO for the Wakatipu Community Foundation says: “This is an excellent opportunity for nonprofits, schools and other nonprofits organisations to make a greater impact in our community by applying for grants to support their youth-related programs and projects.” Projects should meet at least one of the following objectives specific to the Wakatipu: have a positive impact on youth, promote equality, environmentally focussed, support health and mental well-being, poverty relief, and support sustainable outcomes. While not required, there is a preference for organisations that involve youth in the planning and implementation of the program or project. The $10k grant fund has been established through donations to Wakatipu Community Foundation from local residents, Dick and Diana Hubbard, local corporate sponsors Roost Mortgage Brokers and Craigs Investment Partners, as well as support from the Hugo Charitable Trust. During the formal application process, the youth-led Wakatipu High school student team will make site visits and work with each charity in the application process, with students and charities gaining valuable insights. The students’ efforts will culminate in a celebration of the programme and the awarding of grants at an event later this year. Generation Give programme graduates may apply to serve as youth advisors with various charities throughout the Wakatipu. Registered charities can apply for up to $2,500. Link to online application. Aurora Energy’s investment plan public drop-in session The Commerce Commission is holding a public drop-in session as part of its consultation on Aurora Energy’s plan to increase its prices to fund a major network investment. The Commission’s role in Aurora’s investment proposal is to set network reliability standards, as well as determining how much money Aurora should be allowed to recover from its customers to carry out its plan and over what period. The ASB Great Debate promises to be an evening of political theatre not to be missed with a lively, and informative debate. There are two certainties in life – death and taxes. I reckon Southland can add mud during winter to that list. Yet year after year we see media headlines about stock in mud during the winter. So if it looks so bad, and gets us so much negative attention, why don’t we just stop it?
These crops provide much more feed per hectare than grass, meaning that stock can be fully fed for the winter on a smaller area of the farm, leaving the grass paddocks undamaged for the spring when many of the animals are producing milk. And we add baleage, hay or straw, to balance their diet.
To answer that question, think about how often you mow your lawn during the winter. And what happens if you park your car on the lawn, or walk across the same patch of it frequently at that time of year?
The stock are fed well on a daily basis. And cows have a huge engine digesting their food underneath their thick leather coats – if they’re full, they’re warm. No doubt, when it rains, it doesn’t look pretty. But that doesn’t mean they are being mistreated, and it certainly doesn’t mean they would be better off on a grass paddock. The whole winter cropping process is focused on the best stock and environmental outcomes possible during this challenging period.
During Southland winters there is very little grass growth, and what grass is there is poor quality due to frosts, constant damp and lack of sunshine hours. On top of that, everything gets water-logged. Heavy animals will turn most paddocks to mud in a day or two throughout much of the winter – just like walking frequently on the same patch of your lawn. So farmers spend most of the year preparing for the winter. During the spring we plant crops like swedes, kale and fodder beet which grow through summer and autumn, and hold their condition through the winter.
