Tarras Internacional Airport Tarras International Airport. Has a nice ring to it, as long as you’re not from Tarras. On the face of it the idea sounds preposterous. But then think again and factor in the self-centred arrogance of people from Queenstown and Wanaka. We think we can stop growth into our district. Or at least some of us do. The fact is we can control the rate of growth at best. Covid has proven to be a pretty good controller of tourism growth, but before that and once the world recovers, our control mechanism is a 75.1% stake in Queenstown Airport Corporation. If the community wish to limit flights into Queenstown, and in Wanaka’s case stop commercial flights altogether, then that is what the Councillors voted onto QLDC will do. Basic politics- looking after the people who voted you in. But such a move has no effect on the demand. They will still come. By road. By a road that last time I drove it was a most pitiful excuse for a state highway. The Kawarau Gorge is literally hanging on to a crumbling cliff face and will disappear into the river with just the smallest act of nature. But they will find a way. They always do. And do you think the Christchurch City Council will give a hoot how many tourists they pump into Queenstown and Wanaka once their Tarras airport is operational in 20-30-40-50 years’ time? So, we are doomed to be what we have always been. The best little alpine tourism hub the Southern Hemisphere has ever seen. Which brings me to the really preposterous part of this Tarras airport debate, scuttling Queenstown Airport and selling it off for housing. Do the advocates for such lunacy have rocks in their heads, or do they simply not care for anything beyond their own peace and tranquillity. Don’t you worry about the rest of us who actually quite like what that airport does for our community. The connectivity to friends, family, business, and the world.

Hey, here’s an idea. Why don’t we enact a communist style compulsory relocation to Tarras for any person who signs a petition to shut down and sell for housing Queenstown Airport. I read in the ODT there is one staunch old farmer in Tarras who hasn’t sold to the Christchurch Airport mob yet. We could use his land and market it as Central Otago’s hotbed for folks who want to live in a fairyland surrounded by nothing more than their own self-importance. No noise other than Shrek the sheep baa-ing. No pesky tourists except for those looking for Shrek the sheep baa-ing. Back in the real world, Queenstown Airport is fantastic. I am picking my folks up from there on Wednesday. It’s easy, it’s the lifeblood for any working person in the Wakatipu directly or indirectly. We shouldn’t care too much about the masses coming via the Kawarau Gorge. Supply and demand have a way of sorting things out. But we should not be forced to join them on an hour and half trip to Tarras every time we want to travel, for the sake of a peaceful cup of tea and afternoon nap in Kelvin Heights. Air New Zealand has announced 7000 extra seats for Queenstown services in August But the short-term positive was outweighed by increasing long-term uncertainty for Queenstown Airport last week. Airport bosses confirmed an unspecified number of job losses as it restructures for post-Covid recovery, with activity levels are forecast to be 50% down over the course of this financial year. And Christchurch Airport then announced plans to build a rival airport in Tarras. It has bought land in small farming community in Central Otago, with the goal of developing a jet-capable airport. Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns said the plan is to start with a 2.2-kilometre runway. “Building from scratch would enable us to design and build one of the world’s most sustainable airports. Our plan is to build in modules so we can start small and grow to meet any future need.” Queenstown Airport’s own expansion plans and efforts to develop Wanaka Airport are on hold, having been vehemently opposed by some sections of both communities. But Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) acting chair Adrienne Young-Cooper believes it will be a long haul to get a rival regional Tarras Airport off the ground. “A greenfield airport development, by its very nature, is a long-term proposition,” she said. QAC chief executive Colin Keel confirmed job losses from the organisation as a result of the Covid-19 downturn, but won’t say how many. QAC initially retained all permanent staff through the Government’s wage subsidy scheme - claiming more than $478,000 for 68 staff - it has now restructured the business.

$6 million boost for affordable housing Queenstown’s affordable housing problem will be eased through a $6.35 million interest-free loan from the Government. The money will pay for the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust’s first 25 apartments within the Toru development at Remarkables Park in Frankton. The Trust has a contract to purchase 50 apartments in the development, which are due for completion early 2021. They will be sold through the Trust’s assisted home ownership programme, Secure Home - buyers purchase the properties through a 100-year lease arrangement, with the Trust retaining ownership of the land in perpetuity. This reduces the amount of deposit and mortgage needed upfront. They will be offered to the 600 families on the Trust’s waiting list. Housing Minister Megan Woods announced on Friday that Queenstown would be one of the first two places in the country to receive funding from the $400 million Progressive Home Ownership scheme. QLCHT chair Andrew Blair says: “We are delighted to receive Government backing of this scale – it demonstrates clear support for our innovative Secure Home programme, which we launched last year. “We have had a contract on the Toru apartments for two years, but following the COVID-19 crisis, we are very grateful for this Government assistance, which will ensure we are able to offer these properties to the 600 households on our waiting list.” The Trust is also working on a separate 65-home development on land off Jopp Street in Arrowtown. The Progressive Home Ownership(PHO) scheme was announced in September as part of the reset of the Government’s affordable housing policy, after it scrapped KiwiBuild’s 100,000 homes target. QLCHT Executive Officer Julie Scott has been part of a collective working with the Government to design the $400m Progressive Home Ownership scheme. It aims to help about 4000 low-to-moderate income renter households into their own homes. “It’s great to see Government recognition for alternative home ownership programmes like those our sector offers,” Scott says “Financial support of this nature will enable community housing providers across New Zealand to scale up and help more Kiwis into home ownership.” Under Secure Home, the Trust retains full ownership of the property and the household purchases the right to occupy that property at the cost of house construction (excluding land). The household then pays an annual ground rent to the Trust for use of the land, which is set well below market value and only ever increases annually with inflation for the period the household remains in the programme.

Christchurch Airport unveils plans for jet-capable airport at Tarras Christchurch Airport has revealed plans to develop a jet-capable airport on 750ha of land at Tarras. Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns said the current concept is to start with a 2.2-kilometre, jet capable runway. “Building from scratch would enable us to design and build one of the world’s most sustainable airports. Our plan is to build in modules so we can start small and grow to meet any future need.” “We now want to use our experience to ensure the South Island is wellpositioned to take advantage of future aviation trends and remain wellconnected to the rest of the world.” Malcolm said $45M has been spent on the project so far – which includes purchasing the land bordered by State Highway 8 and 8A. Malcolm said the airport team is pleased to have secured the land so it can begin discussions about its long-term thinking. He said the airport had planned to announce the proposal next week when he and other members of the project team will be in Central Otago, but an announcement was made early following a media query. Malcolm said the project team will consult with people across the South Island to “hear from those with ideas and feedback as we further investigate the feasibility of the project and shape its design”. He said Christchurch Airport has long seen the potential for a new airport in Central Otago. “This site is close to existing infrastructure and is easily accessible for a number of regions. Its topography would enable airlines to use their most sustainable aircraft. “We’ll take a long-term approach and match our pace to both the growth in aviation and the needs of these communities and regions. We have the experience to ensure any new airport would be economically sound, enable jobs and meet the environmental and connectivity needs of the future.” Christchurch Airport started working on the proposal before COVID-19 disrupted air travel globally, Malcolm said. Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) acting chair Adrienne YoungCooper said QAC noted the announcement with interest. “A greenfield airport development, by its very nature, is a long-term proposition,” she said. She reiterated that QAC has paused its long-term planning while QLDC and central government complete their district spatial plan work including infrastructure planning and impact assessment of airport development. Bendigo Station owner John Perriam said the airport would put Tarras on the map. “It’s the smallest town in NZ so fancy it being picked out for an international airport. It’s unbelievable! We’ve already got a coffee shop, a store and public toilets - that’s a good start for them,” he said. While John didn’t know how other Tarras locals would react to the news, he said: “It probably makes sense, we’re basically the hub between Christchurch and Mt Cook and across to Wanaka.”

Woods launched the PHO scheme on Friday. “Under-investment in housing and infrastructure in the past has made the aspiration of home ownership impossible for too many families,” she said. “I’m delighted the Government is once again delivering solutions to enable more families to own their own homes and secure their futures.” The Housing Foundation in Auckland is the other provider named to support low to median income families who are struggling to pull together a deposit, or pay a mortgage, into home ownership. More phase one providers in other centres will be announced soon. “The fund will focus on areas where housing affordability is most severe, with a strong preference for new houses to build supply,” Woods said. While Queenstown Airport Corporation initially retained all permanent staff through the Government’s wage subsidy scheme - claiming more than $478,000 for 68 staff - it has now restructured the business. “We have approached the organisational restructure with a focus on retaining capacity and capability wherever possible to ensure operational resilience. “However, the sad reality is that we have recently said goodbye to some very dedicated and talented people who have made a significant contribution to QAC and to the community in their time with the airports.” Some had been with the company for many years. The restructure has been across the whole business. Keel declined to put a figure on the job losses “out of respect for our people and particularly those who have left the business.

They are 14 one-way services on the Queenstown-Auckland route, 24 one-way services on Queenstown-Wellington route and 34 one-way services on Queenstown-Christchurch route. Air New Zealand General Manager Networks Scott Carr says the airline has been pleasantly surprised with demand for domestic travel. “As a result of demand, we’ve added or upgauged more than 400 oneway flights in August,” Carr says. “This includes operating an additional 408 one-way flights and 18 flights which have been upgauged to a larger aircraft.”

“One silver lining is the opportunity to pause and reset and for QAC, the airport businesses and the wider community to work together to make decisions about the future,” he says. “We now have the benefit of hindsight to consider a future in very different circumstances than pre-Covid. We should put differences aside and come together to define what “sustainable” means for our region and work collaboratively to achieve it.” Meanwhile, QAC also needs to appoint a new chairperson. Former chair Prue Flacks resigned from the board of directors to support member of her immediate family through illness.

No flights to or from Queenstown have been upgauged, but the additional flights provide almost 7,000 additional seats.

“Ms Flacks joined the board of directors in 2017 and made a valuable contribution to the company as its chair,” QAC’s corporate GM Sara Irvine says.

The national carrier currently runs about 14 arrivals and departures each day, although some days are busier than others.

“The QAC directors and management greatly appreciate Ms Flacks’ leadership during her time as chair and wish her and her family well.”

It upguaged 140 flights on the Auckland-Queenstown route for the school holidays, using the larger A321neo aircraft rather than the A320. In July, it ferried 34,000 passengers to the tourist mecca, slightly more than last year, and more than 15,000 only paid $100 or less for their flight, according to the Otago Daily Times. Last week former QLDC councillor Cath Gilmour, speaking for antiairport lobby group We Love Wakatipu Inc, told councillors the plans should take Queenstown Airport Corporation’s “push for air noise boundary expansion off the table, for ever”. “Christchurch Airport has certainly thrown a very large, feral cat among the pigeons,” she said. Toxic bait on the ground in Lake Hayes Estate Rabbit control operations begin in Lake Hayes Estate early last week with toxic Pindone carrot baits placed on the ground. Queenstown Lakes District Council will be baiting the Widgeon Place Recreation Reserve near the Kawarau River. This operation is being planned in conjunction with adjoining landowners and will comply with the Otago Regional Council’s Pest Management Plan. Albert Town Recreation Reserve (campground) will also be baited. • The operation is expected to require up to three toxic applications, each estimated to be one week apart. The timing is weather dependant. • QLDC strongly advises all to exercise caution if entering any of these areas during the application of bait. • People should avoid touching the baits or removing carcasses from a targeted area. • If near an area in which the rabbit control operation is underway, dog owners should keep their dogs under close control or on a leash. • Tracks and reserves near the rabbit control operations will be clearly signposted and pamphlets will be made available to campground staff in Albert Town Local schools, vets, medical centres and childcare centres have been notified of the operation. Queenstown Lakes District Council is QAC’s major shareholder, with 75.01%. Auckland Airport (AIAL) the minority shareholder. However, voting rights for a new chair are 50-50. It’s not expected to be an issue, however. Councillors at last weeks full council meeting are expected to back Adrienne Young-Cooper as chair and Simon Flood as deputy, and AIAL has indicated it will support the appointments. Young-Cooper has been acting chair since the unexpected departure of Flacks earlier this year. She’s been a director since 2017 and has more than 30 years’ experience in resource management and planning. “With the current focus of QAC being future planning both in Queenstown and Wanaka, Ms Young-Cooper’s expertise and experience were considered to be invaluable in her appointment as Deputy Chairwoman and similarly make her a well suited candidate for the role of Chairwoman,” the report to councillors reads.

Queenstown MP Hamish Walker won’t return to Parliament but will pocket about $65,000.

A $90 million project to improve Queenstown’s main suburban route should be completed within four years.

National Party MP Walker announced earlier this month that he will step down as MP at this year’s election, after leaking the private data of Covid-19 patients in a bid to refute allegations of racism.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will soon begin public engagement on the plans for the SH6 / SH6A corridor - which runs from Lake Hayes to the BP roundabout at Frankton and out towards the Kawarau Falls Bridge.

New National leader Judith Collins, in a statement, says he has been granted leave from his parliamentary duties in Wellington. He hasn’t appeared in the public eye since the scandal saw him fall from grace on July 8. “I have spoken with Hamish and we have decided the best course of action will be for him to focus on supporting his constituents from within his electorate,” Collins says. “We expect him to continue this good work through until the end of this parliamentary term.” The Clutha-Southland MP will, however, continue to be paid his full salary up to the election in September, and as is the standard procedure for outgoing MPs, for another three months after that. He’ll earn about $65,000. An MP’s base salary is $163,000. His last public comment was on July 8.

The plans include a new bus hub in Frankton, an upgraded roundabout there, bus lanes along SH6 towards Lake Hayes, a new roundabout at the Ladies Mile turn-off to Lake Hayes Estate, a pedestrian underpass, and improved cycling and walking tracks. There will also be some improvements to Frankton Road towards the CBD. Central Government announced funding for the project back in January, part of a $12 billion nationwide upgrade programme. Then, last month, PM Jacinda Ardern came to town to announce a further $50 million for the first stage of a downtown bypass, running from Frankton Road to Gorge Road, with two more stages eventually connecting to Fernhill. Both projects are expected to begin construction sometime next year, which means Queenstowners can expect a few years of traffic misery on the roads, especially as it will be compounded by the $52 million downtown streetscape upgrade project, which could begin within months. Even the relatively straightforward new Quail Rise junction caused major delays for residents, with queues stretching back into the suburbs of Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country. Jim Harland, the agency’s Director Regional Relationships, says Waka Kotahi is completing the business case for the SH6 / SH6A work. There are no preliminary drawings as yet. “The NZUP package still needs to go through the normal processes. “Although the funding has been guaranteed we still need to undertake a robust option development process with the key stakeholders and to demonstrate that the package provides good value for money. “We are still completing the business case for the whole package. The preliminary programme has the construction starting late 2021/ early 2022. This is assuming that there is no undue delay with property acquisition and consenting. The whole package is expected to be complete by 2024.” The road upgrades will intersect with two masterplans - for Frankton and Ladies Mile. The first draft of the $840,000 Frankton masterplan was released back in June last year, while councillors voted last week on whether to reorder finances so consultants can push on with the Ladies Mile plan within the next nine months. With plan change variation work, it’s expected to cost up to $1.4 million.

“Today I am announcing that I will not be standing for re-election for the Southland electorate at the upcoming 2020 election,” he said in a statement. “I wish to thank the people of Clutha-Southland who I have loved meeting, assisting and representing over the past two and a half years. “I have fought hard for my community at every opportunity. “I sincerely apologise for my actions. “I will be making no further comment.”

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is also planning $151 million of improvements to Queenstown Events Centre, on land which borders both SH6, SH6A and the Frankton roundabout. And, last week, Way to Go group, which includes the council, Waka Kotahi and the Otago Regional Council, released early options for a new bridge over the Shotover River at Arthurs Point. Harland says public engagement will begin soon on the $90 million upgrade plans. “We will be interested in everyone’s views on this great opportunity for Queenstown and the surrounding area.”

A new community-driven platform has been launched by Queenstown Lakes District Council. ‘Torokiki’ is live and ready for ideas from the community about how the district can recover from COVID-19 socially, economically and environmentally. Torokiki emerged out of the QLDC’s recovery work following the impacts of COVID-19. “As we entered the recovery stage coming out of lockdown, I started to receive lots of ideas, I even had an idea of my own,” Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult says. “Torokiki will help us prioritise and judge the ones which will have the most benefit and impact on the community. “It’s not just about Council deciding what will be best, but allowing the entire community to input and help drive the ideas. Recovery is about everyone working together.” However, Torokiki is more than just a platform to share ideas, it also requires the community to help shape and support those ideas by providing feedback and commenting on the ideas of other. Currently QLDC is committed to supporting three challenges which centre on important themes for the district including: • Challenge 1 – How might we diversify the economy for Queenstown Lakes to minimise the effects of future shocks to our district? • Challenge 2 – How might we become more resilient in our respective social communities, towns and district given the recent impacts of COVID-19? • Challenge 3 – How might we reduce our district’s food waste and improve the resilience of our local food system to Climate Change? You can submit ideas of your own or you can add your own lens, knowledge, or expertise to someone else’s idea to help them grow. The challenges will be open for six weeks – closing 30 August 2020. From this point the best idea in each category will be progressed. “This is a really important part of our recovery process. We need to do some extraordinary things to revitalise our district so we’re looking for some extraordinary ideas submitted to Torokiki,” Boult says. The Torokiki community will be a collective place, a place of sharing, a place of support, a place of innovation, a council press release says. I’m trying extremely hard not to make any comments about Tarras. It’s very trying and very hard not to. Maybe it’s a dead cat solution - throw something shocking on the table, and everyone focuses on it, instead of the other issues. I think the best thing for everyone to do is to make sure they book a ticket on Eventbrite to hear Max Rushbrooke give his talk on “Power to the People” this Thursday night. It’s quite alarming to hear so many locals complaining about the same thing, i.e. not being kept informed about what is happening in our community, and feeling that our great leaders are not exactly interested in what the community wants. Max might be able to help us find ways of addressing this. In spite of this, the Wakatipu still keeps making people fall in love with it - I’ve spoken to two more people today who have decided they will move here - they can work from anywhere, and why not live somewhere fabulous with an airport that can let them attend the most essential meetings (and parties!) Although the weather is extremely fickle, it definitely feels as if the vast majority of daylight hours are designed for our outdoor enjoyment. We’ve got a brilliantly diverse community from all sorts of backgrounds, and masses of young people. According to my hero Tyler Brule, who edits “Monocle” magazine, places with too many private golf clubs attract too many rich, old, white men, and that makes them less appealing to everyone else. I’m extremely fond of my rich, old, male friends, even if they do have far too much influence on all our lives and the best comment I ever heard was from a ten year old boy who asked prior to the election that John Key won, “Can only men be Prime Minister?”. Women aren’t perfect either, but they are pretty darned close! Denise Martin is one of the district’s cleverest businesswomen and her invitation to the launch of Oculus which helps build healthy spaces to live and work in was snapped up by a HUGE crowd of locals wanting to learn about it. There were lots of fun science displays showing us how to fix a cold, damp house. It’s a particular interest of mine as our 150 year old house is often colder inside than out, and I have major envy when I go into cosy houses with double glazing and underfloor heating and other modern inventions (our house HAS got electricity,..., not that you’d think so). I looked up some of the recent projects Denise has worked on, and they’re some of the most beautiful, smart buildings I’ve ever been in - Camp Glenorchy (do you know you can go and ask for a tour to see how everything works in a place that’s totally off the grid? Even the loos!!) and Aro-Ha - I was lucky enough to be at a brilliant yoga day there on Sunday - if you ever get the chance, do take it. If there is a heaven, I’m sure it will be very like Aro-Ha, but with great coffee. And of course, it will be in the Wakatipu Basin.

What’s On iD INTERNATIONAL EMERGING DESIGNER AWARDS 2020 Winners of the 2020 iD International Emerging Designer Awards will be announced in a premiere video presentation on Friday 7 August at the Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin.

Originally from Gore, Jackie Bristow began her musical career singing in her local choir and at Gore’s Golden Guitar awards. She now lives and works in Nashville, USA and has a string of albums and music awards to her name.

Jackie will headline a Turn Up the Music Trust concert on 9th August (4pm – 6pm, Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall), with funds raised going towards the Trust’s song writing competition for young people in the Wakatipu region. Jackie returned to New Zealand earlier this year to tour the country but was unable to return to the USA due to Coronavirus restrictions. She’s decided to make the most of being happily ‘stuck’ at home by inspiring the next generation of musical talent. “I have done music my whole life – song writing was something I naturally ended up doing – but when I was young, it wasn’t really encouraged at school. We always sang other people’s songs, even when I got into country music. So, I think it is fantastic that they’re now encouraging song writing in schools,” she says. “Music and song writing is an amazing outlet. It gets young people off their devices and gets them being creative and in touch with their feelings.” Jackie adds that the support of trusts and organisations like Creative New Zealand, NZ on Air and the Turn Up the Music Trust are an invaluable source of support for musical talent. “I think it is a really good thing to encourage originality and creativity, especially from a young age. It’s something I really believe in.” While support for the arts has grown, Jackie says some aspects of New Zealand have stayed the same. Being able to spend time with her family and enjoying the natural landscape are two things she has missed while living overseas. “It’s inspiring being back here. I’ve been doing some song writing and it has been good to slow down. I usually work a lot and I travel a lot but this time has allowed me to slow down and just feel what I feel. It’s really lovely and quite special to have time with family and some old friends too.” The ‘Jackie Bristow and Friends’ concert will feature local music legend Mark Wilson, the Wakatipu High School Choir led by Margaret O’Hanlon and other young local musicians. One short day. One big plastic problem. Sunday morning, the 19th of July, Sustainable Queenstown held a day event in support of ‘’Plastic Free July”. The event, ‘Sustainable Steps: A Plastic Free Journey’ was to create awareness around the imminent plastic pollution takeover. New Zealand is dealing with a big 8.3 billion tonne problem and it’s growing. The events of the day highlighted how entrenched the problem is. 10am, with frost still upright on the rocks, Sea Shepherd walked the shoreline picking up every used butt. Seven divers, fully kitted up, emerged into Queenstown Bay to clean the lake bed. They pulled out two tyres, a signpost, a plastic chair and two mobile phones. Jen Matiu, beach clean co-ordinator, expressed that this was one of the better beach cleans she’s been to. At the same time, Sunny Sky (Queenstown proclaimed Wiggle and eco-warrior) offered two free sessions for young tots to move their bodies and explore Papatuanuku (mother earth). The purpose was to educate our little ones about the importance of looking after one another and our land. 11.30am an engaged group gathered at Big Fig. The perfect space for coffee, cake and anti-plastic conversations. Chrissie Lahood (one of three sister owners of Big Fig) shared her journey of removing single use cups from their cafe for Plastic Free July. Nearly 300 million disposable cups get used in New Zealand over the year and the business saw beyond the customer convenience to the bigger picture. She hopes more local businesses will band together and do the same. Paul O’Hara from Soul Food Organic spoke of his personal journey from going zero-waste and off the grid to finding a happy medium. “I started to get health problems.” His story was a refreshing insight into the eco extreme. 2 - 3pm the operation moved to Nemo Workroom in Frankton to make lacey little produce bags for our fruit. Here, Trudy Munro (owner of Nemo) informed us about plastics in our clothes - a newly talked about tiny plastic problem. Washing plastic material, such as polyester, can cause plastic microfibers to enter our waterways. Attendees walked away armed with produce bags and new material knowledge. 4pm the litter-picking walking bus from Nemo to Altitude saw the team gather six full bags of rubbish. 5pm and at the final destination, with a beer in hand, Eddie Gapper (managing director of Altitude Brewing) talked about their efforts on conscious packaging with their six-pack can rings. The day ensured hope, that people in Queenstown do actively care. Our plastic free month fad is coming to an end, but this shouldn’t stop people working towards a higher goal. “Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing will get better. It’s not.” – Lorax

How to get what you want in life rather than worry about what you don’t want in one easy step. Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland Recently I spoke at the Chamber of Commerce, about how to ‘Lead out of a Crisis’, one of the mindsets I spoke about was focusing on what you want, rather than worrying about what you don’t want. It sounds easy right? Yet, the fact is that we have around 64,800 thoughts a day and it is estimated that on average 80% of those are negative. This means that most of the time we are focusing on what we don’t want, this has a huge impact on the reality that shows up in our life. Please know this is not about faking it till you make it, or just thinking positively, this is a simple tool that communicates with your brain to allow it to focus on what you want your future to be like. The truth is that now more than ever people are experiencing anxiety, clients we are working with right now have never had this before, it’s been Covid induced anxiety and it’s getting worse. If anyone has anxiety they are actually focusing on the future and seeing it go wrong, anxiety is an emotion of the future.

of rich lemon juice. And now, I’d like you to cut off a slice of that lemon. A mouth-sized slice, the kind you might pop in a cool drink. Look at that slice closely, noticing all the little sacks and segments bursting with juice just waiting to be released. And imagine you’re going to pop that slice of lemon into your mouth, biting down and releasing all that juice over your tongue. Now I’d like you to take a moment to check around the inside of your mouth with your tongue. You’ll almost certainly notice that there’s extra saliva. I know that even sitting here writing this article, my own mouth is watering in response to the image created in my mind. But why should that be? We know there’s no lemon. You imagined what it looked like; you imagined what it smelled like; you imagined what it tasted like. The interesting thing is that to

When a person runs anxiety they created a movie, they see if through their own eyes and hear a soundtrack, plus an internal dialogue (which is generally there own voice) and this then drives the feeling of anxiety, you see what is interesting is the brain doesn’t know what is imagined or what is real, it always feels real on the body. Let me give you an example of this, just play along with me. I’m fortunate enough to spend 3 or 4 months of every year in beautiful Portugal. As you’d expect, we get plenty of wonderful sunny days, and I like to take my road bike out early in the mornings and cycle through the lovely countryside before the temperature climbs too high.

your body, that lemon was real. To your body, that lemon slice was about to come into your mouth, and your mouth prepared for it with extra saliva just as it would have for the real thing.

This often takes me through the lemon groves, where at the right time of year, the aroma from all those lemons ripening on the trees is just amazing. And in this exercise, we’re going to be imagining one of those lemons.

There are two things to take from this exercise. One is the realisation that your thoughts, be they good, bad or neutral, really do have a direct impact on your body.

So, wherever you happen to be, I want you to imagine that you’ve got a perfect lemon right there in front of you.

The second is that your neurlogy can’t tell the difference between a real experience and a vividly imagined one – they react to both just the same.

Picture it there, the perfect colour, the perfect shape. You know that it’s the perfect lemon. Enjoy knowing that this is your perfect lemon, with its perfectly formed skin, plump with juice and reminiscent of the sun-soaked groves it grew in.

So our mind can have unwitting power over our automatic functions, simply because of what and how we think. So it’s time to take control.

Imagine taking a knife, and cleanly cutting that perfect lemon in half, recognising that distinctive swishing sound of the knife slicing through the stiff peel and the soft, juice filled centre of the fruit.

In fact this is pretty much what makes one person different from another. We’re all fundamentally the same, aren’t we? Human beings, made to the same basic design.

The lemon fragrance and the juices are instantly released to float up into the air in a cloud of lemon aroma. You can almost see all those tiny particles of lemon juice and lemon oil as they fill the air.

The only real difference is the way we think, create a movie of what you do want, see it, hear it, what will your internal dialogue be? Then you will feel it, your future how you want it to be. This is powerful and very empowering.

Imagine what that smells like, and what it might taste like if a little of that lemony cloud just happens to touch your tongue. Look at the cut lemon halves and notice how some of the segments have been broken open. One of the segments is still absolutely full
