Boom Scandal Gone I suppose 3 different MP’s in as many terms of government is par for the course in some electorates. Those contestable seats that flip and flop from Labour to National and back again. But here in the Clutha Southland, now Southland electorate we have been wrapped in the blue blanket of the National Party forever. Like it or not. I was excited when National chose a young progressive MP in Todd Barclay after Bill English went to the list. Not that I particularly care for National over Labour but because he was not a farmer. Maybe would give a hoot about the Wakatipu a tad more than Bill did, and that hope came to pass as Todd moved into the neighbourhood in Arrowtown. He spent time with the local business community and learnt what help we needed from central government. Then BOOM. Scandal and gone. Then along came Hamish Walker. Another likeable young bloke. Maybe a little more country than I would like but without a doubt a hard worker. He went into bat for all sorts of social, community and business-related concerns this huge and diverse electorate had. He was available at his Frankton office, answered calls and things were looking up. Life is about building relationships and with Hamish, hopes were high that the Wakatipu would have a long-term advocate. Then BOOM. Scandal and gone. So now what? Back to square one. Despite the electoral boundary changes Southland is still Southland surprise surprise. Dominated by the farming industry to our South. In my humble opinion the boundaries are still wrong. The Queenstown Lakes District should be in one electorate. Despite our differences with Wanaka, we have more in common with that lot than the farmers to the South. Wanaka is in the Waitaki electorate. Unfortunately, another National safe seat. I say unfortunately not because of any great love for Labour, Green, Act or NZ First but because a truly contestable seat brings with it the benefit of attention from political suitors. But let’s not dwell on the perfect fit as far as electoral boundaries, and start thinking about what we need from our next member of parliament. No farmers please. We get how important the primary industry is to New Zealand but the last viable farm in the Wakatipu was sold into lifestyle blocks and residential subdivisions years ago. Our most pressing need is someone as keen to protect the 96% of outstanding natural landscape left in the Wakatipu and the waterways that it drains into as we are. We need someone who is prepared to sit in their Frankton office with an opendoor policy to every resident of the Wakatipu with a legitimate need for parliamentary help. That is our migrants with immigration trouble, our businesses with legislation trouble, our council with infrastructure trouble, families with schooling and education trouble, our whole community with health care trouble. It is a tough job as Todd and Hamish will testify to. But someone needs to do it and someone good. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

A summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Queenstown has been given a glimpse of the future with plans for the $151 million upgrade to the Events Centre and options for a new Arthurs Point bridge revealed The masterplan for QEC includes five new buildings housing an extension to the current swimming pool facilities, indoor multi-use courts, four squash courts, a new health & wellbeing facility (studio/ fitness), a function centre/ clubrooms for seven sports clubs, and a new disaster emergency precinct. Outside there would be two new full-size artificial turfs, three new sports fields, overflow parking, a new plaza, maintenance yard, new outdoor netball / tennis courts and relocation of cricket nets. The project includes the possible relocation of Frankton Golf Course. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has asked Central Government for funding through the post-Covid ‘shovel ready’ fund. It has progressed to the shortlist stage.

On reflection Round and Square had really quite enjoyed Lock Down: the place had been like the old days without all the noise and rush and with most humans being pleasant; so many pats and conversations on the street, often in the middle of the road. What they really missed, however, were the new opportunities to make their views so widely known without having to leave home.

Public consultation is expected to begin in August and judging by the reaction to the plans on social media, the number of car parks is expected to be a hot topic. Last Monday, the Way to Go Group (QLDC, NZ Transport Agency and Otago Regional Council) released three possible locations for a new road bridge across the Shotover River at Arthurs Point. It will replace the iconic single-lane Edith Cavell Bridge, which has served the community for 100 years, but causes congestion and is unsafe for walkers and cyclists. Four possible locations for new walking and cycling bridges have also been announced, along with various options for the types of bridge and their pros and cons.

Queenstown rules out as a quarantine location

Three options for new Arthurs Point road bridge

Queenstown has been ruled out as a location for managed isolation and quarantine facilities.

Three possible locations for a new road bridge across the Shotover River at Arthurs Point were released last week by the Wakatipu Way to Go group.

Cabinet Minister Megan Woods said on Friday, the town does not have the necessary medical facilities. Over the past few days, Woods, the lead Minister on the programme, and Air Commodore Darryn Web, the operational lead, have visited Queenstown, Invercargill and Dunedin, meeting with local officials. Both Queenstown and Invercargill have been ruled out, while Dunedin remains an option, although the Government currently has nearly 2000 spare beds in its existing facilities. “We’re continuing to appraise Dunedin as a suitable location,” Woods said, in Dunedin this afternoon. “We are ruling out, however, Queenstown and Invercargill as places for the managed isolation of returning New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. “This is a combination of health capacity issues, and the capacity that sits around the hotels, and also the ability for critical mass for number of the facilities... so if you think about Queenstown and Invercargill, they probably represent one of those each.” The Government’s announcement it would assess the suitability of the resort for a quarantine or managed isolation facility caused major concerns locally. The report recommends they are approved for community consultation. The majority of the upgrades would be completed within three years. The Queenstown Events Centre (QEC) was built in 1999 in Frankton after much debate as to its location. In 2008 Alpine Aqualand and Alpine Health & Fitness was built on the site. The pool has recently been closed for several months - across two periods - for the ceiling to be repaired.

The bridge will replace the iconic Edith Cavell Bridge, which has served the community for 100 years. Four possible locations for new walking and cycling bridges have also been announced. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and Otago Regional Council (ORC), working together as transport group Way to Go, want public feedback. Way to Go Board chairperson Peter Hansby said the Edith Cavell Bridge was a local icon and a popular photo spot for visiting tourists, but there are a number of reasons why improvements need to be considered. “Currently it is unsafe to walk or cycle across the Edith Cavell Bridge and because it is a one-lane structure, drivers experience congestion and delays at peak times. It’s also the only alternative route into Queenstown if state highway 6A is unexpectedly closed. “Making improvements to the crossing at Arthurs Point will address these challenges and provide a lot more resilience to our wider transport network.” Hansby, who is also QLDC General Manager of Property and Infrastructure, said that while it’s early in the process, community feedback will help determine the best solution for an Arthurs Point crossing. “The details we’re sharing at this stage include some options for possible bridge alignments and what type of bridge could be possible in those locations. “While it’s early in the process, it’s really important we can capture community thoughts and ideas now so they can be factored in to determining a preferred option for the future.” An engagement booklet and details on how to provide input can be found at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz It also provides details on six possible options for the type of crossing, such as a new single-lane bridge, with the Edith Cavell used as road in one direction, or two-lane bridge with Edith Cavell retained as a walking / cycling bridge. Skifields booming holiday

Remarkables ski-field extending through this week

It has been a bumper couple of weeks for Queenstown’s twin skifields Coronet Peak and The Remarkables.

Queenstown skifield The Remarkables will continuing opening daily for another week, after a busier than expected school holiday period.

Domestic tourists turned up in their droves to both mountains during school holidays, competing for carpark space with keen-as-mustard locals hitting the slopes for bluebird days after some decent snow dumps.

It will remain open until Sunday, July 26, before moving to weekends only.

More than 7000 people per day were skiing and snowboarding most days, and NZSki boss Paul Anderson says when 2500 turned up for night skiing last Friday at Coronet, altogether it produced one of the busiest days he can remember.

Ski area manager Ross Lawrence said the number of guests visiting over the past couple of weeks had exceeded expectations, so they were excited to be able to give locals and visitors more time to enjoy the slopes.

“We’re stoked,” Anderson says. “There have been so many Kiwis in Queenstown.

“We’ve received a lot of feedback from guests whose school holidays didn’t quite line up with our two weeks of daily operations so we wanted to give them a chance to visit us before heading back to school and work.

“We’re seeing visitation at levels about the same as last year, which is quite extraordinary.

“We know anecdotally town is still going to be reasonably busy next week so we’re expecting another week of good visitation.

“We usually get 30-40% of our visitations from Australians, so we did expect to be down by that kind of quantum but Kiwis have really answered the call to arms and taken holidays in New Zealand. Queenstown has been a popular place to go.”

“Conditions up here are fantastic at the moment, we’ve got some great skiing and riding on and off trail so encourage everyone to get up here to enjoy it for themselves,” he said.

Last Friday, there were 10,000 across both mountains for the day, including the night ski.

The Remarks will resume daily operations from Saturday, September 26, through until the close of the season on Sunday, October 11.

“That’s the most I’ve seen on Coronet Peak and Remarkables combined on one day.” Carparks at both mountains were full by 9am, with headlights snaking up the skifield roads from 7am.

Bulldozers begin work on campground It has been a Queenstown holiday spot for generations of families and in recent years provided ramshackle but affordable accommodation for low-income workers. But the bulldozers will begin demolishing the former Lakeview campground and holiday park site off Man Street, above the CBD. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is taking the first step of a decade-long development project to turn the 10-hectare site in a massive multi-million dollar extension to the town centre. The council has been working closely with the consortium of Ninety Four Feet and Augusta Capital along with other development partners on staged plans. Ngāi Tahu Tourism, however, recently announced it was pulling its involvement in a hot pools project on reserve land next to Lakeview. All buildings on Lakeview campground will be removed and some unprotected trees in the new roading corridor, all in preparation for upcoming infrastructure works and future development of the site.

“They’re keen to get up in the carparks and are leaving earlier and earlier. Kiwis like to drive themselves.” At Coronet, cars with only one or two people in them are parked at carpark 7, the furthest away from the base building, encouraging people to carpool and use less space. NZSki took on 150 casuals for the holidays, on top of 250 seasonal. “But we’re expecting visitations to drop off significantly after the holidays. I’m just talking to some of the hotels around town, who say bookings really do fall off a cliff.” Anderson says NZSki still expects to be about 40% down on revenue for the full year, however. “We’ve got to keep the last few weeks in perspective, it does help but it’s 14 days out of a 100 day season. So it will be tough.” Remarks ski area boss Ross Lawrence, in a video update this week, says the Sugar Bowl Express chairlift is progressing, with Doppelmayr working to complete the commission in the next week or two. The grooming team are starting to pack the trails and the terrain park crew is starting to form up the intermediate line. Check out the Queenstown App’s daily snow reports.

It is possible that some of the former campground cabins may be relocated from site as opposed to being demolished. Traffic disruption is expected to be kept to a minimum, as the work is contained within the site. Demolition of the former campground site is scheduled to be complete by December, while further demolition of selected parts of the holiday park is scheduled to begin on February 1, 2021, and finish in April. Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park remains open. As part of the project, a stormwater upgrade project will take place on the Brunswick Street and Brunswick/Lake Esplanade Intersection. The upgrades will be undertaken in a staged approach from July through to November. Initial investigation work on this specific section of the upgrade project will run from July 20-31 from 8.30am – 4.30pm, and further information on the following stages will be issued as the project progresses. QLDC Property and Infrastructure General Manager Peter Hansby said every effort would be made to ensure the work is completed with minimal disruption. “For the period of the Brunswick Street works parking will be restricted, so if you regularly park on the street please find a different place to park while the work is underway,” he said.

Queenstown house prices bounce back Queenstown house prices are holding firm despite the fallout of Covid-19 and the volume of sales actually increased last month compared to 2019. There were 79 residential properties sold in June, up from 70 in June last year. The median house price is only $9k below last year. May 2020 saw a major wobble, with only 41 properties sold and a median price of $965,000. But the market has bounced back in June.

Everyone who knows me knows nosiness is one of my major problems - I love finding out what’s happening in our community and I think I’m pretty darned good at it. So when I went to meet my friends at the Lake Hayes pavilion for a walk on Saturday, I was agog at the huge number of cars parked there for the intriguing sounding HABERDASHERY ( such a deliciously oldfashioned word) fair. Forgetting completely my lack of domestic skills in any area, I rushed in and found women clutching rolls of fabric and bags of buttons and all sorts of ribbons and notions (another oldie but goodie). The Salvation Army had organised it and covid lockdown gave everyone the chance to clear out their sewing room cupboards and drawers, take their goodies along so that they could be bought and put away in completely different houses. I wanted to buy so many things but my miniscule sensible side reminded me of my domestic failings, so I just bought raffle tickets instead. And I WON!!! Thanks so much Raeward Fresh for a fabulous hamper, and well done to the Sallies for what must have been a terrific fundraiser for the great work they do. If anyone is organising a community event, do please let me know and I’m happy to spread the word. Ditto cultural events as I write the books and movie info for Arty Facts - check it out on the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society FB page. If you haven’t been to the Queenstown Contemporary in Grant Road at Five Mile , do get along there. Clever Lia Embil is giving a talk on Thursday at 11 am - she’s got some of her works exhibited and she makes her own paints from natural materials. The forecast for this week is cold and miserable - in other words, perfect for books and movies. I just got an email to tell me that a Scottish documentary made by cross Scots is now available on TVNZ on Demand. It’s called “You’ve Been Trumped” and while the great orange one has managed to have it blocked for several years, suddenly it’s available and sounds terrific, and all the infuriating things he says and does will have your blood boiling and you’ll be toasty warm in no time. Dreaming of all that delicious, unused electricity from Manapouri has kept me toasty warm too - I even had to email Tim Shadbolt to tell him to look up Center Parcs( does that make me sound bossy?), the Eden project and pictures of enormous glasshouses as ideas of what could happen once Tiwai Point closes. The only thing wrong with Southland is the cold, and if any of these could happen, imagine how many jobs would be created. Look them up and see what you think - international tourism for us is probably not going to be at all affordable, or even doable for the foreseeable future, and the thought of getting fresh vegetables each day from Southland greenhouses during the winter has a lot of appeal. Swedes and kale have little charm. Jeff Hylton has oodles of it, though - this truly Southern man can do everything - hunting, fishing, building plus he’s a great musician AND a great writer - his editorial on the Wakatipu’s woeful traffic management was spot on. The only way to change people’s habits is to be cruel - if you don’t have a full car, you have to pay $50 to enter town - they could have hitchhiking stops everywhere and all the fat cats alone in their expensive cars would have to pick them up. I’M JUST DOING MY JOB! I am driver of a 12-seater taxi-van and work for Greencab Queenstown. On 11th July at1am, I took a group of people from downtown outside Cookie time to their place. When they were on board, I’ve asked ‘’may I ask how many stops will you have’’, but they didn’t answer. The first stop was to drop off their friends to Lower Shotover, and I end the taximeter with the fare at $53.15. Then I start meter again from there to Kawarau Falls. However, once we have arrived and I show him the fare was another $73.78, with the total at $126.93, the gentleman became so offensive, and refused to pay and start to yell at me, ‘’are you trying to rip me off?!

Last week I took a taxi only over 60 bucks, blablabla...‘’ I said ‘’if you don’t agree with the price you shouldn’t choose taxi to back home, and if you are over 4 people, our attribute charge is the van price, obviously little higher than a small taxi, otherwise, you will have to get two cabs which not worth for sure.’’ I tried to meet halfway at $100, but that man bargains a lot, our call centre staff said to make it $90 which he finally paid but was still unsatisfied and he insulting me “you are a dick, all your country’s propaganda shit are true and real’’. At that time, I was so pissed off but I can’t do much.

Honestly, I should let them know the fare, before we started the taximetre, is definitely going be over 100 bucks, from town to Quail rise and Lakeside Estate and suggest it’s better to have two cabs rather than come and back through Frankton hub. I’m a hard worker man driving the night shift with good manners, followed everything by the company rules, but still suffering from the discrimination. It’s so disgraceful. (abridged - editor) Finz

RESPONSE TO LAST WEEK’S EDITORIAL - KNOW IT US WHO ARE MAD As a good mate of mine put it, we are a geographical clusterfuck left over from the gold rush era. Double lanes help, but not when it is forced by its environment to pinch back into single lanes. We could have bypasses like through K Heights across a bridge to Park St. But towns big influencers live on both sides and don’t want the traffic. To me there are some obvious solutions. Like the one above. New bridge next to Edith Cavill (which has low weight limits, some cranes can’t cross it). Bypass from Remarks ski field turnoff to the Kawarau, keeping on its south side round to Chard Farm area before rejoining the state highway. Just cut out all of Frankton and the Ladies Mile. It is as you describe. A numbers thing. Keep infrastructure the same whilst multiplying everything that feeds into it ten-fold and wondering why there is now “traffic”. Europeans would have had it sorted decades ago Jimmy Carling Of course, the new arterial routes which are due to be built soon will make all the difference. NOT. Since they don’t address the actual problem areas or provide an alternative to using a car.

A bridge to Kelvin Heights from Park St, a bridge by passing QT from the base of the Remarkables to Lake Hayes area. A huge car park at Ladies Mile, Frankton and QT with a monorail all the way to town above the Cycle tracks! All the bays outside seem to always be full too (I know they are not specifically for the Dr’s though.) You end up having to leave home early to find a park. Like any growing city, there are never going to be enough parks, enough roads, enough lanes for more and more cars. Hasn’t LHE got the direct service to town they’ve been asking for since the start? Pasta Café returns to Queenstown for 4 weeks on Friday nights from the 17th July to 7th August, (17/7; 24/7; 31/7; 7/8;). An extension is possible!

It takes a good crisis to shift a system. COVID-19 sure has given us a cracking one. With the figurative ladder pulled out from under us, it’s time to have a serious discussion about the direction we want to take as a community. And more importantly, who gets to make those key decisions that affect us all. Each one of us has a voice. Each voice provides a unique perspective on how we can rebuild. Each perspective helps shape robust decisions that are more likely to be the right one. Research has shown that teams outperform individual decision makers 66% of the time but diverse teams (age, youth, gender, location, heritage etc.) make better decisions 87% of the time. The principle is that good decisions are made by many brains – not big brains.

This year it will be held at St. Margaret’s Church, Ross St. FRANKTON, not in town as previously. 2020 is the 18th year for Pasta Café where a great hot meal with drinks and home baking are served free of charge to all who attend. Pasta Café is supported with generous donations from the Wakatipu Presbyterian Church and a number of local Agencies & Businesses. This year we have also received a grant from the Greatest Needs Fund. In addition, members of the community, and others, can also support Pasta Café by donating to the Givealittle website. In 2012 Pasta Café was featured on TV3’s Campbell Live show. We believe God has been extremely generous to us and our hope is that we can pass this blessing onto local families and visitors to our town in a safe, warm and friendly environment. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the nourishing meal and the live music. This is an opportunity for you to connect with others in your community and you can also bring along someone (or a family) who would benefit from a FREE night out.

Our current democratic system fails to follow this logic. We vote for a person/party who we believe best represents our views. Once the ballots are counted, we’re either in the winner’s box or feel disenfranchised and frustrated at not backing the right horse. The last two decades have seen a continuous slide in voter turnout at elections due to lack of interest in the system. This is in particular with young voters who look at the line up and often see no one who represents their voice (one way to skew the outcome I guess). Direct action, can end in the upsurge of political protest, and has become the new modus operandi to try and have our collective voice heard. Decision making is left up to a few, where diversity is rarely around the table, and consultation with the community often comes after the fact, too late to have any real influence on policy. As research has demonstrated, this is likely to result in poor decision making. The interests of the community and environment are often side-lined leading to an increase in distrust between the elected officials and the community. As part of the RESET Summit 2020, One New Zealand is hosting an evening with Max Rashbrooke, to talk about the future of democracy. Following on from Max’s last visit to the district in 2019, this conversation takes a look at the next steps we need to take to get more and diverse voices around the decision making table. It provides an opportunity to collectively ask ourselves how we can create a democratic system based on our common values and shared vision, consensus building, truly equitable representation that captures all of our diverse thinking and voices. Only then will we increase our chances of making some really good decisions. Max is a Wellington-based writer with twin interests in economic inequality and democratic participation, and is currently the 2020 J. D. Stout Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington. Exhibition Review

Rating: That was a waste of time. I talked during the performance.

What: AboveBoard recycled snowboard exhibition Where: Queenstown Art Centre When: Friday 17th of July - until 21st July Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs Strutting out of the bitter cold into a cosy Queenstown Art Centre, like it was 2019. Stretching the chin over the shoulder in front, to get a gander at the snowboard art on display. It was only 5.40 pm and the room was already radiating with bodies, red stickers were placed but a looming hum of covid convos brought you back to 2020 reality. We are unbelievably lucky! Looking at art “normally’’ is a public health risk in infected countries. Locals hugged one another and cooed in wonderment that this iconic winter art exhibition could happen at all. ‘AboveBoard’ is in its 3rd year and organiser Jase Johns from NZShred remains confident about the event going ahead but admittedly is stunned by the number of entries. The ‘Aboveboard’ exhibition took the wall space of two rooms. Artist had only 3 weeks to get their recycled snowboard display ready.

It was mmmk. Totally worth it. Must See!

One artist confessed he was in a state of slumber before this project. Crafting his creation on a board base gave him a purpose to get up in the morning. Pacing the side of the walls, the imagination of artists was eclectic. Cascading autumn leaves, clay monsters and big flowers modelled out from the board. Detailed etched leather, laser cut wood, fluro paint, graffiti art, poetry and painted landscapes set in resin. The event had a realist approach, it wasn’t going to hold its guests for hours on end. The prizegiving was wrapped up by 6.15 pm with proceeds going towards the ‘Happiness House’. The people’s choice – The dutch shredder; a board painted in traditional dutch colours with quirky clogs as the bindings. I was bemused by the creativity. Jase did not want to slap a theme on the exhibition, much to the pester from others “I hate the idea of telling someone what to do”… “It’s beautifully random”. The perfect depiction of this soul-warming event.

Get out and explore your own backyard! South Island - Upper half Following on from last week’s article, here are some of my favourite destinations in the top half of the South Island for kiwi’s to explore. So chow down that Fat Badger’s slice, throw your trainers on and start up the car. Starting on the West Coast, Fox Glacier is the first notable stop on the map, with the drive through Haast Pass echoing the rural beauty which is usually associated with New Zealand.

Another neighbourhood pitstop is the nearby lavender farm which will be in full bloom when New Zealand eventually heads into Spring. Here, you can also spend your time cooing over the farm’s resident sheep and chickens. Before you leave, don’t forget to try the popular ‘Cooper’s Catch’ takeaway, where you can enjoy a coronary clogging meal whilst you overlook the sea. Crayfish, of course is the popular delicacy here, with the town ‘Kaikoura’ translating in Maori for food (Kai) and Crayfish (Koura).

The well paved track takes roughly 1.5 hours in total. You can grab a decent snap of Fox glacier from a fair distance and then be off on your way to Franz Josef where there is a wider variety of walks to choose from. Be warned that some trails can be restricted due to weather conditions, so make sure you take this into consideration before planning your trip. For those seeking more adventure, both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers can be walked on, with a guided tour. Travellers can continue further up the West Coast or alternatively, if you wish to explore a larger city, you can head up and across Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch. A suggestion en-route would be to visit the Castle Hill walk which is a pull in just off of the main road. Large, limestone rocks rise high from the hill and can be explored on foot for a quick 20 minute stop. It takes about an hour from here to arrive into Christchurch.

The first “go to” in Christchurch is the local transport – download the ‘Lime’ app and see the city via electric powered scooters, or take a trip on the old fashion tram which glides through the city centre. Personally I felt that, as a result of the Christchurch’s earthquake in 2011, the city is still slowly trying to restore its former buzz and at times can be noticeably somber. The local cathedral is hidden behind locked gates and gradually being renovated after the devastation. Paying a visit to the Quake City museum gives an interesting look in more detail about Christchurch’s turbulent earthquake history. Other places to see include the Botanic Gardens, open air cinema on weekends, the Little High Eatery and Riverside food courts for reasonably priced food/ drinks. Further north, the seaside town of Kaikoura is always a popular destination and best known for either its whale watching flights or dolphin/ seal kayaking tours.

Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its long sandy beaches which are surrounded by hillside woodlands. A glorious location for kayakers, mountain bikers and trampers alike, you will certainly be spoilt for choice when choosing an adventurous pursuit. One of the park’s famed points of interest, ‘Split Apple Rock’ is an unusual, natural rock formation set amidst a hidden beach cove. Despite the quirkiness of this sight, the Abel Tasman coastal walk is the main attraction, this taking 3-5 days to complete on foot. The furthest end of the walk is situated at Tōtaranui campground which is found at the end of an excruciating 12km unsealed path and is suggested only for those happy to risk the physical state of their vehicles. The ‘official’ start of the coastal trek is within the Mārahau area and walkers are able to park for free, then cross the estuary towards the cliffside, to begin. This is not a loop track so you will have to double back on yourself once you have travelled as far as you wish.

It’s worth noting, for those wishing to camp locally and save their dollars, a free campsite within the national park is ‘Waitapu Bridge’. Nelson is also an hour from here and offers shops, restaurants and accommodation for those preferring to stay further out of the national park. I work at the Queenstown Ice Arena, and I got into my position through hockey How long have you lived in Queenstown and why did you choose to live here? I’ve lived in Queenstown for roughly 3.5 years and I originally came here for hockey. Ended up coming back/staying because I met my girlfriend here. Recommended must-do activity in and around Queenstown? That’s a no brainer for me… anything at the QIA… skating/hockey/ice bumper cars. Where is your favorite place to eat? Dine in & Takeaway: Tons of good places to eat, but every time I’ve been to Jervois Steakhouse it has been amazing. Flame is a go-to for take out. If you were stranded in Queenstown and could have only 1 item, what would it be and why? It would have to be a billionaires credit card… so that way I could afford to survive here. What has been your best/worst date? Best date was in Morocco, riding camels into the Sahara and sleeping in a Berber camp overnight. Worst “date” would probably have to be when I was visiting some teammates in Paris. It was one of the last nights there, I met a girl at one of the bars we were at and ended up sticking together throughout the night. Wasn’t until we left the bar that she let me know she was an escort and that her “daddy” was waiting on her haha, luckily it was a short jog back to my buddie’s house. Best QT memory? There’s been quite a few over the years, but I think the coolest would be filming an IOC commercial for the 2018 Olympics up Snow Farms where Cam Frear and I were the hockey talent. It was played globally which was pretty sweet. Worst QT memory? Worst memory would be getting concussed back in 2018 and being confined to a dark room/no hockey for 7 months. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read, seen or learned in the past week? There’s lots of stuff out there but the most interesting for sure would be what happened in the state of Georgia, USA in 1868… to see what KKK and others did to the black elected officials and community as a whole is something everybody should know about. What’s the best bad decision you ever made? I’d have to go with transferring colleges so I could play collegiate hockey with my older brother. That or pursuing professional hockey, as it’s allowed me to travel the world and see things I never would have otherwise, all while playing the game I love. What’s on your bucket list? Main thing I’ve always wanted to do was touch all the continents, see the pyramids, and visit Israel.

Through hockey I’ve lost some teeth and though I do rock out the hockey smile most of the time, I do have a flipper that I wear. When I don’t have tooth in, it’s usually tucked into my coin pocket in my pants. What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? So many skills are useless today but my most useless one would be putting in my contacts without using a mirror because apparently some people struggle with that? My most valuable skill would be knowing how to brighten up a room. What did you always want to try but never found the courage to do? I’ve always wanted to but just haven’t pulled the trigger on sky diving. If you won a million dollars what would you spend it on in Queenstown? I’m sure if I got the right realtor I could surely buy half of a house with that eh? What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? It’s way too long to type but it ends with your closest friend and his manhood being the butt of the joke. What slang or trend makes you feel old? Tik tok as it’s just vine with a different name. But also, the way kids snapchat these days just makes no sense whatsoever. Who is your inspiration? And why? My dad is definitely my inspiration. I’ve always said it, he’s the smartest man alive but also the perfect example of how a man, father, and husband should live his life. As long as I can make my dad and mom proud, then I’m happy. What’s your best piece of advice? There’s a long list of things to say, but you can’t go wrong with telling people to never be a day late and a dollar short.

Do you eat broccoli stalks? If not, why not? It may be the case that you were only served the florets as a child, so you think that you can’t eat the stalks. Broccoli stalks are both edible and delicious. When you throw away a broccoli stalk you can be chucking away almost half of the vegetable – which not only is a waste of food, it is also a waste of money. So how can you eat broccoli stalks? To use them, cut the very bottom off the stalk, remove any leaves and then use a vegetable peeler to peel the outer layer. You can then slice, chop, grate or spiralise them. Slice them and steam them with the florets, add them to a soup, stew, salad or stir fry, or grate them for fritters.

What’s better than listening to a cello play? Listening to more cellos, says Cellists of Otago’s Heleen Du Plessis.

The University of Otago cello teacher and coach is looking forward to bringing her very special ‘cello choir’ to Arrowtown for the very first time. Originally planned for late March, the much-anticipated event has been rescheduled for 8th August at the Athenaeum Hall.

An instant hit when it premiered, The Daylight Atheist by award-winning satirical cartoonist Tom Scott, stars Michael Hurst in a not-to-be-missed repertoire experience. The Daylight Atheist probes at the broken heart of a family and reanimates it with comedy, pathos and charm. “Has its audience roaring with laughter” - The Age, Melbourne Comprising of eight cellos – both students at the University of Otago and members of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, the Cellists of Otago will blend their sounds with internationally acclaimed Kiwi soprano Rebecca Ryan.

“A lot of my projects are about connecting people, connecting place and connecting people from different backgrounds whether that’s socioeconomic or ethnic. I believe the cello has the ability to communicate and bring people together.” says Heleen. Heleen grew up in a musical family. Both her parents conducted orchestras and Heleen was always fascinated by the cellos. “We grew up in and around choir rehearsals and orchestra rehearsals – so I was exposed to the whole orchestra at a very young age. I always just looked at and listened to the cellos and I’d go to their section rehearsals. And I never thought to be anything else – I had a clear idea from a very young age that I would be a cello teacher.” At the age of six, Heleen asked to learn to play the cello. But her father, a violinist, insisted she tried a year playing the violin first. “I did my year and at the end of it, I was like: Can I play cello now?! […] Why would you play anything else, why would you play anything else but cello?” She says, laughing. “The cello can express a huge range of different emotions and colours – it can play really high and really low and it can be dramatic, romantic, and brilliant and angry – there’s just so many sounds you can make. It has a huge range because of the size and its structure – it gives you so many options. It’s way more physical – you have to really move because of the sound so your body and the way you sit, the cello becomes part of your body and for me it is my voice, I have four vocal chords!” Heleen has carefully curated music for the Arrowtown concert, selecting music which has rhythms and lyrical elements which will meld well with a cello choir and solo voice. “Rebecca Ryan is a well-known soloist in New Zealand and internationally. She has a huge range of colours in her voice and I’m looking forward to working with her, to blend our sound with her.” There’ll be a huge variety of music played, which will suit a broad audience – not just those interested in classical music. The programme includes songs from famous operas and musicals, compositions by Lloyd Webber to Wagner as well as New Zealand composers, traditional and Māori music. Tickets for the ‘Cello Meets Voice’ concert on 6th August cost $40 (+ fees, ACAS members receive a $5 discount) and tickets are available via Eventfinda. The event starts at 6pm, but there’ll be canapes and a cash bar from 5:15pm.

After a sold out performance in Arrowtown last June, The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra are coming to the Queenstown Memorial Centre this August, with guest musician Roger Fox himself. The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra is a full 16 piece authentic ‘big band’ lineup, featuring the region’s top jazz musicians and vocalists, presenting bigband classics from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Buddy Rich, with vocals made famous by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Michael Bublé, to Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Sarah Vaughn. 29th August, 7pm, Queenstown Memorial Centre Tickets $32 (+ fees) via Eventfinda.
