Astounding Stupidity We are part of the team of five million and if the government in all their wisdom want to start using Queenstown as a quarantine centre, then supposedly we should act like good New Zealand citizens and do our bit. But really, on what planet must you live to think it a good idea to bus/fly returning Kiwis within New Zealand away from their port of arrival into the country. Unless I am mistaken and returnees are in fact flying directly into Queenstown from Australia, I am astounded at the stupidity of the thought process to be honest. It is almost as if the government are trying to find ways of making our border quarantine procedures riskier. The only place for quarantine is at the port of entry, namely Auckland. Just look at the kerfuffle caused by busing returnees to Rotorua. We need to look no further to see the effect the stigma of being a quarantine centre has on a tourism-based economy. Nobody fancies sharing a family holiday with quarantined folk or anybody they have had contact with. Of course, if you owned, for example, a recently opened 227 room hotel on the corner of Sydney and Stanley Streets, the financial rewards would be massive. Even at knockdown bulk room pricing, to hang the ‘no vacancy’ sign up for the foreseeable future would be a dream during these dark economic times. However, for the rest of the community, there is just far too much at stake. And why are the government continuing to quarantine people in hotels at all? Surely, they can see what everyone else in the world sees. Covid is not going away. We will be quarantining people for years. Build a quarantine centre for goodness sake. One that is designed for the purpose of isolation not a hotel which is designed for social interaction. Run by specialists accountable to the people of New Zealand, be it the health department, police or army. Anybody but hotel workers and private security. It will only take one punk to sneak out his window to indulge in the temptation that is Queenstown for the final nail to be plunged into the heart of dozens of local businesses. I think we have the right to be selfish here and the further Covid stays away from the Southern Lakes region the better. The concept of using Queenstown as a quarantine centre is a stupid idea. No ifs. No buts. Just plain stupid. Just as idiotic as the idea floated around a few weeks ago to quarantine international students here. Whatever the immediate economic spinoffs, the risk of housing a potential hotbed of Covid incubating youngsters in the heart of our community is just not worth the risk. Regardless of what side of the political fence you sit, or how deeply you bought into the team of five million propaganda, you must surely agree. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

More than 2000 people were at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak sQueenstowner’s will hold their breath this week waiting to find out whether the town will become a quarantine centre.
Last Thursday’s announcement that returning New Zealanders could be isolated in the resort did not go down well with the town’s MP or mayor.
He said a source, a South Island medical professional, had told him those were the specific countries people quarantined in the South were expected to come from. Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult highlighted concerns over “extremely limited health care capacity in the event that there should be a localised outbreak beyond any quarantine facility”. Any lockdown could prove disastrous for the town slowly recovering from Covid-19 restrictions. It was busy with domestic tourists in the past week, with thousands heading up to The Remarkables and to a We Are Winter! downtown party, while there was also cause for optimism with the announcement a $60 million new hotel will open this coming Friday. The 227-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites Queenstown, on the corner of Stanley Street and Sydney Street, has been under construction since before global pandemic hit. Meanwhile, Queenstown council’s emergency migrant welfare effort, which has distributed $1.5 million in food and aid, was officially handed over the to Ministry of Internal Affairs and the New Zealand Red Cross.

Queenstown celebrates with We Are Winter party Queenstown’s community came together on Saturday (4th July) to celebrate winter and, well, the fact that we CAN celebrate. The ‘We Are Winter’ party kicked off at 10am at Earnslaw Park with food stalls, music and live ice carving.
WinterFestival boss Harald Ulriksen was part of the team that put the community party together. He highlighted that it was a celebration of community coming together, with a range of events, artists and food vendors all part of the show.
Families poured into downtown to enjoy live music from local artists like Pol & Chad, Turtlefunk, MOJO and Versificator. RockFormation showcased music from young local talent and Auckland DJ duo Sweet Mix Kids got the crowds jumping after the fireworks display.
“Fireworks are never disappointing – kids love it, families love it and that’s really amazing to see families getting down into town and enjoying themselves,” said Harald. Harald took over as WinterFestival organiser in late 2019. The 2020 event, cancelled due to restrictions in response to the Covd-19 pandemic, would have been the first WinterFestival under his direction. Harald says the team put the ‘We Are Winter’ party together in less than three weeks, as soon as they got the official go-ahead. “It’s been a great collaborative effort – Lions Club came to the party too, which is great. It’s a community feel. “I think it is really important (to celebrate as a community) and I think everyone was ready to mingle and be part of what this town is about. And that’s celebrating downtown, celebrating winter, celebrating the snow season. Everyone is getting behind it and it’s really amazing to see families getting down into town and enjoying themselves.”
Queenstown earmarked as an isolation centre Queenstown could be one of the next spots for returning New Zealanders to isolate. In a media update this afternoon, Minster Megan Woods confirmed the Government is looking into using hotels in the resort, and Dunedin. Hamilton have also been identified as the next towns for a centre. “It’s about getting the community back into downtown and creating a bit of buzz, and a vibe because winter is here, winter is back and we are winter,” he said.
“We’re investigating the feasibility of Queenstown and Dunedin as other centres where returnees can safely stay in managed isolation as they join us in our coveted position during this global pandemic.
The celebration marked the return of the popular and long-running Queenstown Arts and Crafts market, where artists and craftspeople from across the lower South bring their creations to sell. It also celebrated the Earnslaw being back in action (covered in brightly-coloured fairy lights) and a night market with local food vendors.
There are 24 such quarantine and managed isolation facilities nationally, with 5205 guests and a capacity of 6058. Next week, that will increase to 27 and a capacity of 6774. It is not known when a centre might open in Queenstown. Mayor Jim Boult previously told RNZ there would need to be stringent safeguards as the district had had 87 cases and did not want anymore. “We haven’t had any for a long time and we want to keep it that way.”
The Remarkables kicks off the 2020 season

New Zealand’s biggest New Year’s festival, Rhythm & Alps, has announced its ‘100% Aotearoa’ lineup for its 10th anniversary festival. Rhythm & Alps 2020 will feature Kiwi heavyweights SIX60, Fat Freddy’s Drop, The Phoenix Foundation, Shihad and many more.
Five-piece band SIX60, with hits including ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’, ‘Don’t Give It Up’, ‘Vibes’ and ‘Forever’ will headline the show, bringing their trademark live performance energy with them. The foursome camped out overnight to secure the coveted spots. Sam Blackman from Invercargill and Tim Blackwood from Dunedin were lucky enough to snap up the remaining two seats after turning up on the morning of the ski area opening.
The annual festival takes place in the Cardrona Valley and draws thousands of revellers to the region for three days each New Year’s. Also on the bill for 2020 is internationally renowned electronic producer Quix and New Zealand’s finest exponents of house music Chaos in the CBD, Kiwi rap’s next big thing Wax Mustang and 2020’s breakthrough songwriter Reb Fountain.
Around 1,000 enthusiastic skiers and snowboarders enjoyed the slightlylater-than-usual opening day. The Remarkables will be open every day during the school holidays until 19th July, then open at weekend only. It will re-open every day during the September school holidays and the season has been extended until 11th October, so locals can expect some great ski days in early Spring.
“We’ve carefully hand-picked these acts from around Aotearoa to highlight the diverse talent that New Zealand has to offer,” Rhythm & Alps festival director Alex Turnbull said.
Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said, “It’s been a long time coming but great to see we have loyal locals who came out today to get the first turns in on their favourite mountain.”
There’s something for everyone with premiere rock n roll band Racing, party-rocking DJs Truth and international leader in the drum and bass scene Trei all performing.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone up for the school holidays - there’s some snow on its way during the week which is looking positive to get Shadow Basin and Sugar Bowl chairlifts running as soon as we can.” The trails were in good shape after a dusting of 15cm over the previous few days and new park features were ready to go along the Rua Conveyer. Work on the Sugar Bowl chairlift is continuing – a specialist called in from overseas had to complete two weeks of quarantine before getting to work on the highly specialist job of splicing the haul cable. Once complete (hopefully, in late July), the upgrade lift will open up a further 2.5km of new trails.
“This is a one-off quintessential Kiwi all-star festival, with a second announcement still to come,” Alex said. Alex said he was elated to be celebrating R&A’s tenth anniversary “with possibly our best line up yet, immaculate stage production set in a stunning and relaxed atmosphere.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters announced last month that the Department of Internal Affairs and a then-unamed NGO (nongovernment organisation) would assume control of the welfare effort from July 1. A $37.6m national programme is replacing the emergency welfare scheme run by Civil Defence and Emergency Management Groups across New Zealand, including Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Emergency Operations Centre Response Team. Internal Affairs is administering the online system and processing applications. New Zealand Red Cross is delivering the assistance. The ‘Assistance for Foreign Nationals impacted by COVID-19 Programme’, known by NZ Red Cross as ‘Visitor Care Manaaki Manuhiri Project’, will run for three months. QLDC’s effort helped more than 7,500 people in the immediate aftermath of Covid-19 restrictions - the majority migrants who had lost their jobs but were unable to return to their home countries.
The Queenstown Salvation Army also offers language assistance if required: Spanish, Portuguese, Afrikaans, French, Fijian Hindi, Gujarati, Hindi, Sinhalese.
$60m Holiday Inn hotel ready to open Holiday Inn, Queenstown’s, huge new hotel will open on Friday, despite the impact of coronavirus on the tourism industry. When Australian real estate investment firm Pro-invest Group first decided to build a landmark 227-room hotel on the corner of Stanley and Sydney Streets, its executives can’t have imagined international borders would be closed by the time it opened. Now the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Queenstown is finished, bar some tidying around the site. It will open with fewer than half the rooms available until more tourists return to town. Ronald Barrott, Pro-invest Group Chief Executive Officer, said “We are committed to expanding the Holiday Inn Express brand in New Zealand and we’re confident that Queenstown’s reputation as premier destination makes it the ideal place to start,” he said. “We look forward to welcoming locals looking for a staycation, travelers exploring the region from all over New Zealand and – circumstances permitting – from overseas very shortly.” The striking building was designed by Queenstown architects McAuliffe Stevens, combining abstract elements representing ice and erratic rock forms to pay homage to the surrounding landscape history. It sits on what were two separate parcels of land, one previously occupied by Bungy Backpackers - a 30-year-old building which had been the resort’s first maternity hospital - and the other by a private house, which was the home of the town’s GP.
From March 26, it provided more than $1.5 million worth of support, in the form of supermarket groceries vouchers, clothes, firewood, blankets, with the scheme later expanded with government-funding to include accommodation and utilities bills support. The outlay is being claimed back from the government’s $30m National Emergency Management Agency Fund. There were 62 core QLDC staff, two Otago Regional Council staff, more than 80 volunteers and five contractors involved in the effort. But now the New Zealand Red Cross and the Department of Internal Affairs have taken responsibility. They will assess people registering for help and provide food vouchers, household goods, blankets, hot water bottles, over-the-counter medication, accommodation, utilities, petrol and pre-paid phone cards, where necessary. There will be no cash payments.
The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant. Instead it’s seen as a base hotel, with people heading into town for lunch and dinner, although Holiday Inn Express Start breakfasts will be available. It also features a fitness room, sauna, two flexible meeting rooms, selfserve laundry, dry room, onsite parking and a free business centre. The rooms power showers, black-out blinds, high-quality bedding with a choice of pillows and uncapped Wi-Fi. The hotel’s General Manager, Jason Sabin, said his team was looking forward to showcasing what smart, simple travel is all about. It’s also got some environmental credentials. “We are proud of our sustainability-focused facilities and initiatives, such as the carpets throughout the building which are made from recycled fishing nets.”
Eligibility and suitability will be assessed every four weeks. Update information on the QLDC website reads: “If you are NOT a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident then you can register for help with the Visitor Care Manaaki Manuhiri programme which is being provided by New Zealand Red Cross in partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs. “To be eligible for this support the eligibility criteria detailed by the Department of Internal Affairs is: • You must be on a temporary visa in Aotearoa New Zealand • You must be unable to meet basic needs including food, rent, clothing, medical care, utilities bills, and household items for immediate urgent needs such as blankets • You must have exhausted all other options including accessing a flight to return to your home country.

It was incredibly hot, 32 degrees and my heart and lungs were screaming, let alone the numbness in my feet and the aching in my palms and neck. Sarah (my wife and wing woman) had been back and forth along the climb and I knew she knew I was hurting, her final words before driving away, ‘find your rhythm’. I knew that the hardest part was to come, a steady 4-5% was now increasing and I knew it would for the next 7km. It would change rapidly reaching 10% in a very short time and maxing at 12%! Louder it rose, that wicked voice inside, ‘you can’t do this, you haven’t trained enough, it’s too far, it’s too hot, it’s too steep’. I unclipped my left foot, allowing the bike to naturally halt and stopped. I had to make a choice and fast! My self-love needed to be installed and fast, I needed to believe that I was more than this. I took a drink, stretched and reset my mind. There was no way I had come this far, faced all these mini curve balls (my Dad fell very ill, I had to head to the UK so training became limited) and this ‘hill’, which I now referred to rather than mountain, was not going to beat me. Even though my body was screaming and physically having the juice to complete this was borderline, the notion that this hill would beat me was inconceivable. Right foot click in, gloves back on and eyes focused. Left, right, left, right, push, pull, repeat. The sudden rush of blood to my legs made them ache in that same way your hands do when they have been freezing cold and numb. Despite this I found myself smiling and when Sarah checked in with me in the support vehicle driving beside me she said ‘You look fresh’, ‘Yep’ I replied and I meant it.
This step was a shock to me on the mountain that day, I thought that I had to keep going, no stopping was allowed but that was just my frame. That’s too hard, we need to stop and regroup, hydrate in my case and nurture in most cases. Look at what’s working, take time for you, relax and then keep going. I did this 4 times on that climb, once I made the voice go away that first time I stopped, I had decided I was winning. Stops meant stretching, getting the feeling back in my feet, taking a gel and pressing go again, ready and full of conviction.

Well, having had the traditional few loops around town in the hope of finding a car park last weekend, I’m wondering if this proposal includes more capacity. We seemed to be operating at 100% parking load already, which seemed odd given we’ve only got domestic tourism at present.

All these new homes built at Frankton Flats, Shotover Country, Lake Hayes Estate, Dalefield and the roads are not coping. It’s still 100kms past the lake Hayes Estate turnoff which is so dangerous, and I’ve just seen someone tonight perform such a dangerous move they came so close to causing at least a five car pile up! Winter sports supplies shop NZSHRED is hosting a wicked exhibition of snowboards, which have been recycled into unique artworks by various art and winter sport enthusiasts in the region. This is the 3rd generation of the exhibition and is growing and expanding each year. Last year Wakatipu Primary School became involved, opening a whole new audience to the event. NZSHRED sources old and broken snowboards to be transformed into artworks. Artists can enter the exhibition this year for free. Planting non-native trees accelerates the release of carbon back into the atmosphere Non-native plants often accelerate carbon cycling. They usually have less dense tissues and can grow and incorporate carbon into their tissues faster than native plants. But they also decompose more readily, increasing carbon release back to the atmosphere. Our research, recently published in the journal Science, shows that when non-native plants arrive in a new place, they establish new interactions with soil organisms. So far, research has mostly focused on how this resetting of interactions with soil microorganisms, herbivorous insects and other organisms helps exotic plants to invade a new place quickly, often overwhelming native species. Large-scale reforestation projects such as New Zealand’s One Billion Trees programme are underway in many countries to help sequester carbon from the atmosphere. But there is ongoing debate about whether to prioritise native or non-native plants to fight climate change. As our recent research shows, non-native plants often grow faster compared to native plants, but they also decompose faster and this helps to accelerate the release of 150% more carbon dioxide from the soil. Our results highlight a challenging gap in our understanding of carbon cycling in newly planted or regenerating forests. It is relatively easy to measure plant biomass (how quickly a plant grows) and to estimate how much carbon dioxide it has removed from the atmosphere. But measuring carbon release is more difficult because it involves complex interactions between the plant, plant-eating insects and soil microorganisms. This lack of an integrated carbon cycling model that includes species interactions makes predictions for carbon budgeting exceedingly difficult.
How non-native plants change the carbon cycle There is uncertainty in our climate forecasting because we don’t fully understand how the factors that influence carbon cycling - the process in which carbon is both accumulated and lost by plants and soils - differ across ecosystems. Carbon sequestration projects typically use fast-growing plant species that accumulate carbon in their tissues rapidly. Few projects focus on what goes on in the soil.

Invasive non-native plants have already become a major problem worldwide, and are changing the composition and function of entire ecosystems. But it is less clear how the interactions of invasive non-native plants with other organisms affect carbon cycling.
Planting non-native trees releases more carbon We established 160 experimental plant communities, with different combinations of native and non-native plants. We collected and reared herbivorous insects and created identical mixtures which we added to half of the plots. We also cultured soil microorganisms to create two different soils that we split across the plant communities. One soil contained microorganisms familiar to the plants and another was unfamiliar. Herbivorous insects and soil microorganisms feed on live and decaying plant tissue. Their ability to grow depends on the nutritional quality of that food. We found that nonnative plants provided a better food source for herbivores compared with native plants – and that resulted in more plant-eating insects in communities dominated by nonnative plants. Similarly, exotic plants also raised the abundance of soil microorganisms involved in the rapid decomposition of plant material. This synergy of multiple organisms and interactions (fast-growing plants with less dense tissues, high herbivore abundance, and increased decomposition by soil microorganisms) means that more of the plant carbon is released back into the atmosphere. In a practical sense, these soil treatments (soils with microorganisms familiar vs. unfamiliar to the plants) mimic the difference between reforestation (replanting an area) and afforestation (planting trees to create a new forest). Reforested areas are typically replanted with native species that occurred there before, whereas afforested areas are planted with new species. Our results suggest planting non-native trees into soils with microorganisms they have never encountered (in other words, afforestation with nonnative plants) may lead to more rapid release of carbon and undermine the effort to mitigate climate change.

She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Even though New Zealand is the loveliest island prison you could ever find, it is still very lovely to head to a different untropical island for a 3 day break. I’m writing this from Stewart Island and still agog to have seen not one, but two kiwis in daylight in the wild. I’m nearly 60 and the only ones I’ve ever seen have been in captivity or stuffed. The first one we saw was so big that we thought it was an animal, and then the next one was a similar size and helpfully slow enough for me to take a photo (admittedly with its head under a leaf) - talk about proud!! If you haven’t been to Stewart Island, now is the perfect time- there really is hardly anyone on the tracks and the locals are so much fun. There is only one place to go on the island, and it’s the pub. We’ve just come back from dinner there - I’m sure everyone on the island is in it. A British man who is a Japanese translator stuck here for lockdown, two young Scottish doctors, a very handsome French barman with hopeless English but ooodles of charm, a couple with a very new baby, dozens of divers and fishermen, the island’s only policeman - it was packed and the staff were flat out serving massive plates of battered blue cod and chips (delicious, if you’re interested). Like the decor, the music is all very last century - Olivia Newton John in her jazzercise lycra gear - fabulous. it’s just a 2 1/2 hour drive to Bluff and you can take a very scenic flight to the island in 20 minutes. We took the ferry because we didn’t know about Shane at Mana Charters 0272094407 who could have taken us all from Bluff and fished all the way to the island. We had an unforgettable time with him catching dozens of blue cod and dredging up exciting baskets of treasure - palmsize oysters, kina, starfish and even a seahorse! - The ferry was fun though, and made for peoplewatching - good southern men drinking Speights for breakfast the whole way over, plus a very cross dog in a cage. I only saw six sick bags being used - Foveaux Strait is tough on tummies. Other than seasickness, island life is so cruisy. At the wharf, a lovely man called Greg called out “Are you Miranda? - the owners said to pick you all up”. Just as well, as the road to our rented house was VERY steep and we had a lot of luggage with all our chilly bins (tomorrow we are going fishing and hoping to catch lots of blue cod) and enough wet weather gear to have survived any amount of rain. Needless to say, it hasn’t rained yet. We walked over the hill to catch the boat to Ulva Island - 30 year old owner and skipper Rakiura(the name tells you how local he is!) gave us fabulous advice about what to do on Ulva, and invited us over to his B and B for a coffee. We haven’t been yet, but we are going tomorrow as we have so many questions about life here. As with Queenstown, it seems that it’s very tough for small businesses to attract tourists - the big companies whisk them all away so that they have very little contact with any locals.If you do visit , do support the smaller local operators - so far our experiences have been sensational. Rakiura kept stressing we mustn’t hurry on our walk round Ulva - take your time and keep your eyes and ears open for any sounds or movements - that’s how these Kiwis saw their first kiwis. Kakas, however are a very different story - there are plenty of these beautiful parrots - a whole gang of them gather on our balcony, preening themselves and squabbling like old married couples about who knows what. I wish I spoke kaka so I could eavesdrop on the politics and gossip of these noisy, nosey birds. And at night, its fun to watch the penguins waddling ashore on Lonneker’s Beach - there are even traffic signs warning about penguins. Today we rang Greg and asked him to drop us at Lee Bay - the tourist information centre said the Garden Mound walk was lovely but terribly steep and muddy. It was gloriously muddy in parts but well worth the walk - compared with the Wakatipu’s walks, it wasn’t steep at all and the biggest problem was the need to take photos at every corner. Empty, sunny beaches with not a single footprint or speck of rubbish - when did you last see one of those? And dazzling green moss and the lacy umbrellas of native trees. We are only on day two of our stay and already planning a return. Lucky us having such an exotic place so close to home.

We started this to have independence from the bigger brands who don’t always seem to understand the Queenstown traveller. I also volunteer as a First Responder for St John Ambulance and I work with Flame Entertainment to create amazingly fun and colourful characters. How long have you lived in Queenstown and why did you choose to live here? I came to Queenstown 16 years ago with the expectation of continuing on to Japan after the ski season, but I met my Kiwi husband in the first couple of weeks and fell in love with him and this amazing place. Recommended must-do activity in and around Queenstown? I’ll never get sick of the Earnslaw - absolutely love it. For a night time activity: salsa dance lessons followed by social dancing at Loco. So much fun! Where is your favorite place to eat? Dine in & Takeaway: I can’t go past Public Kitchen and Bar for a dine-in experience. My go to takeaway is Bolliwood in Five Mile - their curries and naan breads are insane. If you were stranded in Queenstown and could have only 1 item, what would it be and why? Patagonia Hot chocolate with chilli - it’ll warm your soul and tickle your tastebuds! What has been your best/worst date? When I was living in Scotland. My date took me out for a three course - completely deep fried meal. Deep fried fish and corn nuggets to start, deep fried pizza (for real) for the main followed by deep fried Mars bar. Best QT memory? Any day we have sunshine and you can drink wine and eat cheese in the afternoon. And maybe jump off the wharf into the lake. Those are great days. Concert and ODI days are pretty damn good too. And any day I’m a faery at Luma, Winterfest or anywhere else with Flame Entertainment. Worst QT memory? it’s happening right now. Victoria (Tori) Keating What’s on your bucket list? I actually have a list of 99 things to do before I turn 50. I’ve ticked off 53 of those things and am still making my way through the rest. Some are really easy to do such as host a 7 course dinner for 10 people, others are a little disarming such as have a colonic irrigation (I’ve heard it can change the colour of your eyes) and others are more local. I’m hoping to tick off the Milford Track this year as my local. What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? I like to dress up as a dinosaur and do my grocery shopping at Pak and Save… What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? My most useless skill is playing the recorder. My most valuable is that I can say hello in over 20 languages. If you can open with a hello and a smile the rest will follow from there. What did you always want to try but never found the courage to do? Did you see what I said about colonic irrigation? That one. If you won a million dollars what would you spend it on in Queenstown? I’d take groups of friends out for dinner every single night to try each restaurant in town. I reckon we’d get through a million pretty quickly doing that… Maybe I’d also buy an Ivan Clarke original. What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? A mushroom walks into a bar and asks for a beer. The bar tender says ‘sorry mate, we don’t serve your type here’ and the mushroom replies ‘why not, I’m a fungi!’. What slang or trend makes you feel old? I still use x’s instead of kiss emojis. Those emojis seem too provocative to me. Who is your inspiration? And why? David Attenborough. There’s a guy who has made a living doing something he absolutely loves and now shares that passion with the rest of the world for education, knowledge and sheer wonderment. What’s your best piece of advice? You only get one shot at this lifetime. Make it count.
The Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown was founded in 1948. The museum holds a huge repository of objects, photographs, papers, books and interviews relating to our history. The museum is a charitable trust relying largely on its door charge and sales to survive.
Routeburn - Named by surveyor James McKerrow probably after Routeburn near Kilmarnock in Scotland. This in turn is a contraction, from a skirmish after the Battle of Largs (1263 between Norway and Scotland). Earlier names were Wild Dog Creek and Western of Caples.
David Clarke has been the museum’s long serving Director and likes to walk and bike the districts track and trails.
Skippers - There is some debate as to the naming of the canyon and Skippers Point. Some historians say it was named after ‘Skipper Dan McAllister, others say ‘Skipper’ Gray. However, seafarer ‘Skipper’ Malcolm Duncan, who discovered gold in the canyon in 1862 is the best contender. Born in Northern Ireland, Duncan served for a number of years on American ships, hence the nickname ‘Skipper’. Duncan took part in the gold rush and discovered gold at Skippers Creek, which soon became known as Skippers Point or simply ‘Skippers’.
The ongoing future of this district institution is seriously threatened due to the need to earthquake strengthen its heritage buildings and the impact of Covid 19.
Maori Point - One of the richest gold-bearing beaches on the Shotover was discovered by two North Island Māori, Raniera (Dan) Ellison and his colleague Hakaria Haeroa. They had viewed an inaccessible beach which looked promising. They swam across to it but along with their dog. The dog got swept downstream and when the two miners reached her they noticed her coat was covered in fine gold. The site became known as Maori Point and for a number of years was a thriving settlement. Mount Motatapu - (2030m) First climbed by the surveyors Jollie and Young while they were exploring the Cardrona area. Jollie called the peak Mount Perspiring to rival Mount Aspiring Paradise - (head of the lake) - Named because of the large numbers of paradise ducks found there. Originally called Paradise Flats. It was said to be originally known as Paradise Duck Flat, shortened to Paradise Flats and then Paradise.
Tucker Beach - Named because of the lack of gold. Miners could earn enough to pay for their ‘tucker’ (food) Wye Creek - Names by WG Rees, after the Wye Valley on the border between England and Wales
Pigeon Island - Called Wawahiwaka by Maori, meaning ‘the splitter of canoes’. They used the large totara trees that once existed on the island, to build their canoes. It was gifted by the Crown in 1884 to the people of Queenstown for their enjoyment. Extensive planting has seen a wide variety of native plants regenerating on the island. Arts+Culture 4 SOLO EXHIBITIONS Queenstown Contemporary has just launched their first post Covid experience and what they hope will be the beginning of a whole new chapter in art experiences for Queenstown Lakes.
Emma-Kate Moore - Peak Landscape My artwork is about creating a visual language to explore the complex relationship I have with our epic local landscape. This body of work is an object meditation on Ngā Pukemaeroero, or the Eyre Mountains, closest to my home.
For those that know Queenstown Contemporary, the interior of the gallery has been completely remodelled, enabling selected artists to simultaneously present complete solo exhibitions within their own independently curated spaces. This is a huge milestone and an incredible opportunity for artists to show significant bodies of work. It is also an amazing chance for the viewer, to engage with a truly diverse range of art forms and practices, all under one roof. The first exhibition of four solo artist all in the visual arts arena was launched on Wednesday and will run through until the 24th of July.
Grounded in conceptual tensions intrinsic to printmaking methodology, such as the creation of generative matrices and choices around how to translate these into prints of various kinds, the pieces are a documentation closely connected to my working process, namely art-making as a form of embodied

Sarah Bultitude - Sanctum
This work was created over lockdown and so is a reckoning with the felt impacts of Covid-19 here in our region - in particular, how I participate in, and am complicit with, constructing the local economy around the commodification of our landscape in unsustainable ways.
“Sanctum” is a series of work undertaken during Lockdown. The stripping away of the usual routines enabled time to think deeply about the impact and uncertainty of Lockdown, with a view to avoid the obvious of masks, gloves and sanitising. Nature walks inspired the work greatly to depict form, fragility and movement, and in many, a place of silent solitude.
Peak Landscape is my riff on the notion of Peak Oil (or Peak TV), the idea that there’s a point at which the commercialisation of our landscape will hit its maximum rate, after which our exploitative approach will terminally decline. The final series of hand printed images, both works on board and paper, form a contemplative visual poem of sorts that makes manifest some of these personal musings. Emma-Kate Moore, June 2020

Lia Embil is a painter and sculptor who works primarily with natural and found materials; she also uses writing and filmmaking in her practice. Her work explores the human experience through the perspective of the natural world. Much changes and grows at a speed significantly slower than what humans know; only when we pause and listen can we hear the silence. Embil creates work that reflects her own relationship with the land and surrounding nature, including humans. Her solo show: On Silence is comprised of a collection of paintings and sculptures all completed in the last two months. Lara Laverdure - Unfolding Reviving ancient knowledge and traditions, but not holding back progress is the fine balance in filigree jewellery. Filigree is one of the first jewellery techniques to have been used/invented in Mesopotamia dating from 3000 BCE onwards, this technique spread to Egypt, Greece, Asia, and Europe. In modern times with more industrial ways of making jewellery that one can learn fast and mass reproduce, this very delicate and time consuming practice is slowly being forgotten. The folding and twisting of the wire, a primal technique, blends with the New Zealand ‘Koru’’: unfolding and merging cultures from different times. Lara Laverdure, June 2020
