An integrated, visionary plan and $95m to make it a reality. Ninety-five million bucks. That’s $50m to cover the total cost of stage one of the Queenstown Arterials project, $35m for Queenstown’s town centre revamp and $10m for AJ Hackett Bungy. Okay, so, $5m of the AJ Hackett money is a loan, as Jacinda was quick to point out as she stood before the Earnslaw on her Wayfare-promo tour of Queenstown and Wanaka on Friday. But, $95m! Not bad for a Labour-led coalition Government to give to a town so National it once elected Todd Barclay. Mayor Jim Boult was positively beaming. Council boss Mike Theelen too. They finally have direct Government support for infrastructure projects that have been on the drawing board for years, and it only took expert lobbying and a global pandemic to get there. Now there are those who will say we do not need to spend $50m of taxpayers’ money on a new bypass - more roads. And the $35m for downtown will be matched by $22m of council funds, of ratepayer money. The council should tighten its belt and stop all unnecessary spending on grand capital projects. That was a view of many who made submissions to the council’s annual plan. But, I feel we’ve been there before. Post-GFC we had years of zero rates rises, while the council focused heavily on cost-cutting. There were capital projects that progressed, but Queenstown was not prepared for the subsequent double-digit tourism growth. Perhaps no-one could have predicted that. This time, however, the town can choose a different response. It can take advantage of this hiatus and the relaxation of central Government purse-strings to finally catch up and even get ahead.

Look at the plans - they are integrated and visionary. The bypass allows for people to take precedence over cars in much of downtown - in Ballarat Street, Camp St, Shotover Street, Lower Beach Street and elsewhere. It unlocks a $25 million bus interchange outside a huge new civic / commercial buildings project on Stanley Street. In stage two, the bypass will connect to the massive Lakeview development, which over 10 years will provide high-density offices and hospitality premises and assorted accommodation options, hopefully lowering the unsustainable downtown rents. All exciting projects. All show the town will continue to be one of the best places in the world to live, visit, and invest. Perhaps the next push could be for a solar-powered bus fleet for Queenstown, and funding for the suburban commuter cycleways, so there is a green benefit to the projects. All these things will stimulate the local economy and, with any luck, the rates bill will be met by a bed tax when the dust settles. Hopefully, also, AJ Hackett will be the first of many businesses in town to be supported by direct funding. The Kiwi Birdlife Park is in with a major shout, surely, as are many others, large, medium and small. Whatever money is forthcoming, the businesses and the town will have contributed far more in terms of GST, PAYE and SWEAT, and will continue to as the town rises from the Covid sick bed. Thousands of Queenstowners and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern headed for mountains as the 2020 ski season finally got underway More than 2000 people were at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak skifield for opening day on Friday, while across the Crown Range at Cardrona Alpine Resort, the PM helped the skifield celebrate its 40th year. She encouraged New Zealanders was to visit the “stunning” Queenstown Lakes District, that we are “so blessed to have as our backyard”. “It’s not a hard ask but it is something which will make such a huge difference to other New Zealanders,” she said. Ardern was in town to announce $85 million of Government funding to build stage one of the Queenstown Arterials project ($50m) and start work on the Queenstown town centre masterplan ($35m). “In Budget 2020 we set aside $3 billion to support infrastructure projects and today’s funding is the first to be announced from this allocation. “Many sectors and communities are facing uncertainty in a COVID-19 environment and we want to ensure that Government is helping preserve jobs, create new ones and protecting our economy the best we can.” The funding will create about 320 direct jobs and also unlock around $300 million of projects, including a new $25m town centre Public Transport Hub. It will also unlock $120m Project Manawa - a joint investment from Queenstown Lakes District Council and Ngāi Tahu Property to build new civil buildings, civic amenities and commercial development on Stanley Street / Ballarat Street carpark. Construction work on the downtown revamp could begin within three months, while the bypass stage one - Melbourne Street and Henry St - could begin within 12 months. Queenstown Lakes District Council is pushing for the bypass project to be fast-tracked through the planning process by the Government’s temporary post-Covid planning rules.

PM comes to town bearing gifts Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced $85 million of Government funding to enable Queenstown to revitalise its town centre and build its long-awaited downtown bypass. Ardern, in Queenstown Friday, said the Government will contribute $35m to the Queenstown Town Centre project and $50m to Stage One of the Queenstown Arterials. The funding will create about 320 direct jobs and also unlock around $300 million of projects, including a new $25m town centre Public Transport Hub. It will also unlock $120m Project Manawa - a joint investment from Queenstown Lakes District Council and Ng i Tahu Property to build new civil buildings, civic amenities and commercial development on Stanley Street / Ballarat Street carpark. “This stunning town is an internationally renowned tourism attraction and unfortunately the local economy is experiencing a major downturn as a result of COVID-19,” Ardern said. “Pre COVID-19, the district’s GDP was about $3 billion, and the local economy was growing at more than twice the rate of the national economy. “The projects we’re announcing support for today will help ensure the construction sector does not suffer the same negative consequences as the tourism sector.

• Stage 1 of the Queenstown Arterials Road and the Streetscapes project will support 320 jobs • Stages 2-3 of the Queenstown Arterials Road will support a further 281 jobs • The proposed Stanley Street Public Transport Interchange will support a further 100 jobs • Other Town Centre projects directly linked such as Waka Kotahi NZTA street upgrades, car parking, and active travel) will support another 307 jobs.

$10 million boost for bungy Queenstown’s iconic bungy firm AJ Hackett will receive more than $10 million in funding from the Government. Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis made the announcement last Wednesday, that the company will receive Covid-19 recovery support as part of the $400 million Tourism Sector Recovery Package aimed at securing jobs and boosting businesses. The $10.2 million of funding will be divided into a grant of $5.1 million in the first year, with a loan of up to $5.1 million in the second year, if required, through the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme.

“This is vitally important because the sector is the second largest contributor to Queenstown Lakes’ economic growth, employing about 4,300 people, or approximately 14 per cent of all jobs. “These projects came to our attention as being shovel ready and able to redeploy affected workers. They were also submitted through the Infrastructure Reference Group (IRG) process and were identified as front runners to support the district’s economic and social recovery. “Our contribution of Stage One of the arterials project will cover the full cost of this first important stage. This project is a strong candidate to be fast tracked under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast Track Consenting) Bill which would see it able to get under way within 12 months. “The town centre streetscape project is a $57m project in total, with the Queenstown Lakes District Council contributing $22m. Construction on this project is expected to be under way within three months and take about a year to complete. This work will include street-scaping works, cycle and walkways, and is expected to create about 130 jobs. Mayor Jim Boult welcomed the much-needed investment. “First and foremost, I would like to thank the Prime Minister and her Government, in particular Ministers Davis, Twyford, Parker and Jones, for their support and for recognising the importance of providing the support our community needs and investing in the future of our local economy, with this the first of the CIP funding announcements. “There is certainly much more work to be done to ensure we are a truly resilient, diverse and economically sustainable community, but this is a very encouraging and significant step.” Boult says the $85M contribution from the Crown Infrastructure Partners is a substantial boost to the transformation of Queenstown’s town centre and potentially enables stage one of the proposed Queenstown arterial road to begin construction within 12 months. These are projects that will bring many benefits for locals and, when they return, international visitors. With funding confirmed, the streetscape work in Queenstown town centre will revitalise core areas in the CBD for the benefit of locals and the future return of visitors to the town. It is anticipated that construction will be underway within three months. The Council will engage directly with affected parties for both projects and with the wider community as details are progressed.

It’s more than double the amount granted to any other commercial tourism operator so far. “By supporting AJ Hackett Bungy, we’re protecting a world-famous tourism asset as well as the flow-on benefits that an iconic tourism attraction brings to a local community,” Kelvin Davis said. AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand will use the funding to retain its highly skilled workforce, in particular the specialist Jumpmaster roles which take three to four years to train. The company pioneered bungy in New Zealand and the world, beginning in 1988. It now operates across six sites in Queenstown, Auckland and Taupo offering 13 experiences – including bungy, giant swings, bridge climbs, zip rides and catapults. The Strategic Tourism Assets Protections Programme is designed to protect assets in the tourism sector that are nationally or regionally vital to New Zealand’s tourism offerings, are culturally and historically important, and have significant spill over benefits to the region where it is located. More than 300 applications for the Strategic Tourism Assets Protection Programme were received by the time applications closed on Thursday 18 June.

Ski Fields open Almost 2000 people were at Coronet Peak Friday, for the first day of the season, while over at Cardrona Alpine Resort Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern helped celebrate the skifield’s 40th year. Ardern, with Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis and Queenstown mayor Jim Boult, were welcomed by crowds of skiers and boarders.

“We’ve got some awesome early season skiing and riding up here with a good base that we’ll keep building on it with snow making and the natural stuff that’s in the forecast early next week,” Kerr said. Coronet Peak is open daily during the season with Night Ski on Wednesday and Friday nights from Wednesday 1st July and First Tracks starting on the 6th July. Kerr said they were planning to kick off night skiing with a bit of a bang. “We wanted to celebrate the beginning of winter in style so thought a party was in order.

Labour makes a strong bid for Clutha- Southland electorate. Queenstown man Jon Mitchell has been confirmed as the Labour candidate to take on National MP Hamish Walker in the general election this September.

The Prime Minister gave an impromptu speech, saying she wasn’t a skier but was keen to learn, when there were fewer cameras around. “I sensed from quite a young age, or perhaps my parents did, that I didn’t quite have the coordination required for skiing. “Someone just asked me as I came in would I be giving it a go today. With this many cameras, the answer is ‘no’ but on another day perhaps. “Are there any takers amongst you who may choose to teach someone as ill-coordinated as myself? My broken limbs will be on you.” She said her message to New Zealanders was to “come here and enjoy this beautiful place”. “Come here and enjoy the place that we are so blessed to have as our backyard. We as a nation are going through a tough time. Relative to others, seemingly not as tough, we have the freedom to be able be here amongst each other in the way we usually would, close together, and that is a privilege. “But in that tough time, now I’m asking everyone to do the horrible horrible task of coming to beautiful places like this,” she quipped. “It’s not a hard ask but it is something which will make such a huge difference to other New Zealanders. “Queenstown and the surrounding areas in this region are stunning and they are places that some New Zealanders have never had a chance to visit before.” At Coronet, David Furness and Tony Russel from Arrowtown camped out overnight to score the coveted first on chair t-shirts on Coronet Express. Furness, who had been in line since 8pm last night, said it was his 12th time getting first on chair at Coronet Peak and he was stoked to be here to kick off the season. Members of the Cameron family from Invercargill, who also camped out on the snow last night, were excited to take home the other four t-shirts. Coronet Peak ski area manager Nigel Kerr said it was fantastic to get the season underway and he was pleased with the conditions and the crowd. “There’s a great energy in the air and everyone seems thrilled to be back out on the slopes.

Mitchell will contest the Clutha-Southland seat, which includes Queenstown. He says one of his main drivers for standing is to fight for better health services for the communities in Otago and Southland, along with economic diversification for Queenstown. Born and raised in a Queenstown tourism family, Jon currently leads the Emergency Response and Recovery Leadership Development Programme, with Response and Recovery Aotearoa New Zealand, on behalf of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. He has worked in tourism in the ski industry in New Zealand and the US, and on guided walks in Fiordland and Mt Aspiring national parks, as well as in local government and emergency management in Queenstown Lakes, Central Otago, Canterbury, the UK, South East Asia and Canada. A recent highlight of his career was managing the South Island Alpine Fault Emergency Response Plan programme from 2016 to 2018. “Ongoing community COVID relief support, strategic recovery planning, a pivot to more sustainable tourism, economic diversification, and avoiding a return to previous unmanaged growth are issues I want to help solve in government with Queenstown, its smaller communities and Fiordland,” he says. “I have a good understanding of the health needs of our communities from personal experience. My wife is an emergency nurse who has worked in Dunedin, Dunstan and Lakes District hospitals. Fighting for improved and better-connected health services on behalf of the communities of heartland Otago and Southland, including maternity services in Northern Southland and hospital services in Queenstown and Central Otago, is a main driver for running in this election.” Jon and his wife share their time between working in Wellington and developing their small piece of rural Northern Southland farmland, where they are building an off-the-grid eco home. “Southland is large and varied electorate, with different local issues being faced by each set of communities, all of which need and deserve representation in government,” he says. “Southland and Central Otago are key parts of the agricultural backbone of the nation. Water rights certainty and environmental protection are significant issues in Central. Supporting agriculture and employment for local youth and encouraging even better land and water management are crucial in Clutha and Southland. The aluminium smelter dross issue must be resolved for Mataura and wider Southland. Jon has got his first degree and taught geography at the University of Otago. He also has a master’s degree in emergency management from Massey University Wellington. Otago-Southland Labour convenor Ruth Chapman says: “We’re delighted to have a local, experienced leader as the candidate to campaign for Labour in the Southland electorate and help return a Labour-led Government. The coalition government has achieved a great deal and there is still more to do. “Jon’s community and economic development, planning, and disaster response and recovery leadership offer a unique skill set as Southland, Otago and the nation recover from COVID-19.” The National Party confirmed in March that MP Hamish Walker remains its candidate for the Clutha-Southland electorate for the 2020 general election.

Queenstown Dharma Centre Since 1997 the Queenstown Dharma Centre has been providing a peaceful haven where both locals and visitors can explore and practice the timeless wisdom handed down to us by Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. This tradition of inquiry and sharing continues today, 2,500 years later, and the Centre in Queenstown plays its part by regularly hosting teachers from several traditions to help those wishing to deepen their understanding. Each one of us is a unique pattern of mental and biological activity with different tendencies and learning modes; these diverse needs are accommodated by a rich repertoire of offerings from respected teachers with varying approaches. The core practice for anyone interested in probing life’s questions, whatever their tradition and however accomplished they might be, is meditation – the cultivation of a quiet mind. Plastic Free July Plastic persists. Hmph!... Surely, we, the dominant species of planet earth can out persist plastic?! Surely?! This stubborn and convenient material has woven into our lives. It’s found its way out of landfills, into oceans only to be broken down and gulped up by fish. There’s probably micro plastics in our systems from that guilty night of fush and chups. Plastic is EVERYWHERE so becoming plastic free is no easy feat. The term ‘eco-anxiety’ was coined a few years ago to define that environmental ‘doom and gloom’ many of us can feel when we dive deep into climate conversations. It’s hard to go back to that oblivious metropolis once you wake up to a polluted reality. Routine tasks become an overwhelming moral experience. Are the products in my trolley fair trade? Are they plastic free? Organic or vegan? Is the product fully compostable? Could it be zero waste? Is it handmade AND supporting local? It’s too much to process! Monthly Column How good is it to see snow on the ground of our ski fields, the chair lifts in action and the people back in our town? While it is not the normal surge in demand we are used to, it’s a start and it’s heart-warming to see the support from the rest of New Zealand for our community. A recent case which came through my Queenstown office also shows how wonderful our community is. Lana McLuskey is an essential skills visa holder here in Queenstown who gives one-on-one support 3 days a week to a 4-year-old boy, Levi Vallance who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Grin2B. The disorder affects him both physically and mentally, meaning he is non-verbal, non-mobile and requires assistance with everything he does. I recently met Lana, Levi and his parents and I could see first-hand the special bond Lana and Levi have. I have written to the Minister asking for an exemption for Lana as her role will change as Levi heads to school next term. She is a valued member of our community and her warmth and friendliness illustrate why she embodies everything we want and need in people making Queenstown their home. Recently I hosted National leader Todd Muller in Queenstown to talk to locals on the ground about how they were fairing post the Covid-19 lockdown. While he was here he also announced National’s Tourism Accelerator programme to help fund projects which will get our tourism sector back on its feet. National’s Tourism Accelerator will provide direct cash support to businesses and tourist operators that are currently tossing up whether to re-open or shut up shop for good. The proposal would see $100 million invested over a fouryear period. Project funding would be split 70/30 between Government money and private sector investment. Covid-19 has posed a direct challenge to the tourism industry and our Tourism Accelerator is one tool we can use to help the industry rebuild and bounce back. I also hosted National’s Immigration Spokesperson Stuart Smith here recently to hear the issues first hand from those affected by Covid-19 and the lockdown. I continue to lobby for an Immigration office here in Queenstown, which will better service the diverse community we have and the many migrants living here. Todd will be returning to Queenstown in the coming weeks along with National’s deputy leader Nikki Kaye and Tourism Spokesperson Todd McClay. Here in Queenstown, we are really only at the beginning of our recovery from the Covid-19 lockdown and border closures. We know it was what had to be done, but we now need a game plan to move forward, not 51 people out of 55 who were granted exemptions to leave the mandatory quarantine not being tested for Covid-19. It’s a strong reminder this battle is nowhere near over.

Plant a fruit tree this week t’s definitely winter a warm one or a cold one ’m not sure yet. ’m a fan of winter yet as a gardener ’m already counting down the weeks to spring it can’t come uick enough for me and my aching bones. Winter is a great time to plant a fruit tree. ne fruit tree can be feeding you and your family in year’s time for years to come and is also a gift to future generations. Most fruit trees are unloved - chucked in the ground unpruned no fertiliser no mulch and no support plants. ou have only got to drive around the district in autumn to see all the wild apple trees laden with apples.

f you were to plant just one tree this week ’d recommend an apple tree and follow the lead of Mark Christiansen and the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust and plant a ‘Monty’s Surprise’. This apple was discovered in a few decades ago on a roadside minding its own business producing lots of apples and no disease. Research has shown the Monty Surprise as having the highest levels in any apple of procyanidins as well as uercetin avonoid compounds. These are effective at inhibiting cancer cells in the body. ther positives of the Monty surprise are its hardiness and disease resistance making it even more ideal for backyard growing.

So now you’ve bought the apple tree let’s plant it. 1. Check the rootstock. Apples come with different rootstocks. The rootstock determines the final si e of the apple tree. For smaller gardens look at an apple on a M or M rootstock producing a semi dwarf si ed tree. For medium si ed trees M10 will give you a -5m high tree. M10 is also commonly used for espaliering a tree that can be trained to grow along a wall . . Choose a very sunny spot. Consider putting it near a fence or look at an espaliering on a north facing fence if you are short on space or you live in a cooler spot. The re ection of heat and light by the fence encourages fruiting and ripening. .

Apples and pears are better as a single standard shape which re uires less pruning long term.

This will protect the tree from free e thaw and sunburn. . Make sure the finished planting level is at the same level as the tree arrived in the pot. ou’re not wanting to plant the tree deeper as over time the tree collar will rot and kill the tree.

Fruit takes away from this. uring the spring and summer you can give the tree a li uid seaweed feed drench and foliar on its leaves once a month. Keep the mulch topped up. Fruit trees will grow very slowly if they must compete for nutrients and rainwater with grass and consider irrigation. therwise give it a good deep water once a week in drier periods. So get planting that fruit tree today there are loads of other Heritage fruit tree varieties out there to choose from.

This week has been so full of good news and everyone’s buzzing about Coronet opening, the sun has shone nonstop (well, once it has dragged its lazy winter self high enough to shine on us). Wednesday was the cheeriest day in ages - it was the first big gettogether for Impact100 and it was no easy task finding a venue that could seat and feed 100 women all at once - three cheers for White and Wong who managed to cope with the extra 40 people who hadn’t RSVP’d but turned up anyway. I’m sure you can imagine how peaceful and quiet this gathering was... everyone loved the feeling of being together in such a big group and hearing the news that 150 women had signed up pledging $1000 each. If you are involved in any local community projects that could use a massive $100,000 boost to make something big happen, do get in touch with them at wakatipucommunityfoundation@gmail. com - they’re also helping groups learn how to make successful grant applications. There’s never been a time when this area has needed more help like this. Some groups are already excellent at squeezing $$$ out of government, and none better than the bungy boys - I totally agree that bungy is a big part of Queenstown, but it has made a huge amount of money over the years, and I doubt it was in any danger of dying of poverty anytime soon. I wish I had a dollar for every person I’ve taken there to hurl themselves off the bridge over the last 30 odd years. Their huge team of expensive experts obviously spent lockdown putting a great claim application to the government, and well done them for getting their $10 million. It would be lovely if they would share their expertise (or even better, some of the dosh) with other local iconic operations like the Lakes District Museum which sees far more visitors through their business each year, but generates a tiny fraction of the money, and provides all sorts of vital services for the community, including giving visitors information about bungy jumping. A bit of reciprocity would be wonderful. I’m so impressed with what some people achieved during lockdown - I wish I’d spent those sunny days organising some sort of insulation for our singleglazed, 150 year old sash windows. Their only real purpose is to let me know when there’s an earthquake as they rattle so loudly - otherwise it’s hardly worth having the glass as the sneaky heat doesn’t even have to be sneaky to get out of them. Luckily I’ve got some lovely blind people - Paul and Linda from Fitout Furnishing who are getting me some thermal blinds so that we don’t die of hypothermia watching TV in our puffa jackets and gloves. Unlike me, Annabel Langbein didn’t squander lockdown by watching TV and fiddling around on her computer. She has written a memoir about her life and what a life! The book is coming out in October and there will be a launch at Dorothy Browns - I’ll keep you posted with details - it’s going to be a must-read.

I read with interest your piece regarding the Emperor Penguins March (I grew up with it top of mind as my great uncle went to the Antarctic with Scott and came back with stories and photos)

This creates a conundrum - when local businesses did not have to rely on locals and we got the rough end of the stick more than a few times and now we have to put that experience in the back pocket, forgive them, and support them again.

It was awesome to see so many up at Coronet to kick off the ski season on Friday. Now that the TransTasman bubble is unlikely to get here until sometime next year we would seriously be in the shit right now if it weren’t for NZ Ski and Wayfare getting behind Coronet Peak and Cardrona. Whoever got the Prime Minister down to kick it off was great exposure for the area. Well done. Having the mountains open has given us all something to look forward to and there were so many happy faces around the place over the weekend. There were heaps on the mountain Friday and Saturday and with school holidays coming up next week we should see plenty of people around for a few weeks to come. NZ Ski and Wayfare please keep it up throughout the season, we need the exposure to make the most of the snow season domestically. It seems that the TransTasman bubble is no longer happening anytime soon and that’s going to be tragic longer term for many businesses, I suspect. I can’t tell whether it’s because our cases are rising again at the border and the inability to manage the quarantine and isolation properly, or whether what’s going on in Melbourne is giving the powers that make those decisions the screaming wobbles – surely we could open up to some states and not Victoria? Whatever the reason it’s going to have a huge negative impact on local business meantime let’s make the most of the ski season. Simon Cox

RECYCLING BEHIND THE SCENES Kerbside mixed recycling is back up and running, and there have been a few random things coming in through the bins - among them dirty nappies, a vacuum cleaner and more than one pair of slippers (due to excessive lockdown wear?). What you put in your bin matters, not only because our recycling has to meet high quality standards, but also because there are real people sorting our recycling.

Soft plastics are the most common mistake people make. Soft plastics can’t be recycled in our district. If you can squash it in your hand (like plastic bags, glad wrap or chip bags), it goes in the rubbish bin. Dirty food containers are a big problem. They smell, and don’t meet the quality standards. If you want your take-away containers (eg curry) or plastic jars (eg mayo) to be recycled, the food has to be removed before you put them out for recycling.

People often ask me about what goes on behind the scenes. So here’s what happens to your mixed recycling when it leaves the kerbside:

When it comes to plastics, only the kind of plastics that you buy in the supermarket can be recycled. We’re talking plastic food packaging, cleaning and beauty product packaging - these are the plastics bottles (1-7) and plastic containers (1-7) which can go in your mixed recycling bin. All other plastics have to go in the rubbish - toys, balls, plant pots, washing baskets, buckets, garden hose. Take-away cups - rubbish. Drink and food cartons or foil pouches - rubbish. It’s a lot of waste going to landfill, and yes, it’s a bit depressing, but that’s the reality. Sending all those non-recyclable materials off in your kerbside bin only makes it more difficult to recycle the things that can be recycled.

Scene 1, in the truck The recycling truck arrives and picks up your mixed recycling bin. The driver can see the contents of the bin on a camera as it falls into the back of the truck. They will get out and sticker your bin if they spot the wrong things in your bin. But they can’t remove the contamination once it’s in the back of the truck, and too much contamination can ruin the whole load of recycling. There are some especially problematic materials. Aerosol cans and lithium batteries should never be put in any bin (rubbish or recycling) because they can cause fires in the back of the truck. There’s no way you want a burning load of recycling dumped in your street, so it’s a good one to be super careful about. Inside the truck is a big arm which moves the recycling around to make room for the next bin load. Things that can splatter e.g. nappies (sorry for the mental picture) and liquids or food inside containers can be punctured and smeared all over the load. The quality standards for cardboard and paper mean that wet materials can’t be recycled, so they can be ruined this way. Scene 2, at the Wakatipu materials recovery facility The mixed recycling load is tipped out into a massive shed. Inside is a series of conveyor belts and metal bins, something like a cross between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Chicken Run. The recycling is shunted up and down, blown with compressed air, dropped through holes until it’s separated into the different materials. But machinery alone can’t do the job, especially when the sorting machinery is old like ours is. Workers with earmuffs (it’s noisy), fluro jackets (it’s cold) and eye-protection stand at various points - helping to pull out the right materials to be recycled. The recycling crews work hard. Smelly, dirty things make their job a lot less pleasant. Nappies and food waste are the nastiest things to deal with. Needles are the biggest fear, but luckily not too many of those come through. Glass (which is collected for recycling in a different recycling bin and goes to a different bunker) is sharp, and can contaminate all the cardboard when it gets broken. Food is smelly and obviously can’t be recycled. Keeping all these items out of your mixed recycling bin will not only look after your recycling, but also the recycling workers who do the job for all of us.

At the end of the sorting process, each material is baled and sent away to a reprocessor to be made back into a raw material. The bales should only contain clean, dry recycling of the same material. The sorting process can extract some contamination, but too much contamination in too many kerbside bins overwhelms the process and means quality standards can’t be reached. So if you ever wonder whether what you put in your kerbside bin makes a difference, the answer is YES. Recycling only works when we all take care of it.
