Level 2 here we come Domestic tourism recommences, exactly what the means we have no idea but still, my enthusiasm knows no bounds. I do not want to live off government handouts, I want the ability to trade despite the drastically diminished size of the market here in Queenstown. My dealings, at an appropriate distance, with other Queenstowners has proven I live amongst likeminded people. We are a positive bunch and always eager to look on the bright side. However along with that enthusiasm I sense a growing level of frustration, particularly with the daily 1pm Ministerial lectures. We need meaningful information today to plan for tomorrow. I do not tune in to be told “wash your hands” and I don’t need to be reminded not to “pass your phone to others”. What I do need to hear from The PM and others who grace the stage at 1pm is detail to help me run a business and keep as many people employed as possible. The time for warm and fuzzy “team of five million” speeches are over. I am a patriotic New Zealander, and the way we collectively handled Level 4 lockdown deserves praise. But that goodwill has run thin as the cases of COVID19 announced at these 1pm government press conferences sits at zero or close to zero. In fact, it is verging on the patronising to keep telling us we should be “proud” to sit on our hands and wait. The looming economic crisis particularly in our region needs the same level of government detail as the COVID-19 health crisis.

We are all detailing new business plans at lightning speed, and whether you are a self-employed businessperson, corporate mega company, or salary and wage earner, we are also having to detail new household financial plans at lightning speed. Because the urgency is here and now. Is it too much to ask for Government to also pull finger and do their bit with meaningful detail for local businesses? Government has a long history of moving at snail’s pace, maybe I am asking too much. We experienced some strong decisive leadership in the early stages of Level 4. We need that same decisiveness now more than ever as we try to get our economy moving again. It seems the gravity of consequence is weighing too heavily on the shoulders of our rulers. So much so they cannot decide a definitive detailed plan for level 2 and Level 1 out of fear of getting it wrong. In my experience waiting for bureaucrats to make these critical calls is akin to watching paint dry.

Lockdown Level 2- what it means for Queenstown Domestic tourism can begin again as New Zealand moves down to coronavirus alert level two.
Real Journeys donates $15,000 of snacks to the Sallies
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed yesterday (Monday) the alert level will be downgraded, allowing businesses and ski fields to reopen under certain conditions and also allowing inter-regional travel. Last week, Air New Zealand announced flights will resume between Queenstown and Auckland, and Queenstown and Christchurch. Flights will also resume at other regional airports. “We’ve been keen to start domestic air services as soon as practicably possible to support New Zealand’s economic recovery and connect family, friends and businesses,” says Air NZ chief executive Greg Foran. “But the ramp up to higher frequencies will be a slow journey and even when we come out of Alert Level 1, all of our domestic destinations will see fewer flights and reduced frequencies. This is the harsh reality of closed international borders and a depressed domestic economy, with more Kiwis in unemployment and people watching what they spend.” The reopening of domestic tourism, and an eventual trans-Tasman bubble, has been welcomed by Queenstown’s residents, politicians and business owners as the resort begins the long road of recovery from the impact of Covid-19 restrictions. Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult said it would be a huge relief to businesses. “What’s reassuring for this district is that a recent survey showed that Queenstown and Wanaka were top planned destinations for Kiwis to visit when they could travel again – first and fifth place respectively,” Boult says. “This should bring some relief and hope to the many local business owners and their employees that have been struggling to survive.” Hundreds of redundancies were confirmed last week by some of the resort’s major tourism operators, including Skyline and Ngai Tahu Tourism, which owns Shotover Jet. Between March 20 and April 20, the number of people applying for unemployment benefit in Queenstown increased from 151 to 554, according to stats released by Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker. And that doesn’t include migrant workers. They are not allowed to access benefits. Queenstown Lakes District Council has had more than 11,000 requests for emergency support, with 76% of requests coming from migrants. Walker’s calling for more support from Government: “We need to see an industry specific support package and plan in place, to support our tourism sector as they try to get back on their feet.” It is now more than three weeks since the last new case in Queenstown Lakes District, and in the Southern District as a whole. There are fewer than 9 active cases in Southern district. Queenstown’s Community Based Assessment Centre - the Covid-19 testing facility at Memorial Hall - closed its doors last night (Monday). There’s been a steady decline in the demand for swabbing over the past two weeks, only between one and five a day. Any testing will now be conducted at medical centres. Since March 24, 1,363 people were swabbed at the centre. Queenstown Lakes District had 87 confirmed cases. Some 353 asymptomatic people were also tested at Pak’nSave, while 247 people were tested at six Queenstown backpacker hostels. The supermarket and backpacker tests were to determine whether there was any undetected community transmission. All those tests were negative.
A Queenstown-based tourism giant has donated $15,000 of snacks to the Salvation Army - including 14,000 Crafty Weka Bars, 50 cases of gluten free Molly Biscuits, 12 kilos of pesto, 175 kilos of apples and 84 kilos of oranges. The snacks were destined for Real Journeys international and domestic visitors in Milford Sound. But they’re are now helping fill much-needed food parcels at the Queenstown Salvation Army food bank. Salvation Army Queenstown lieutenant Andrew Wilson says the charity has seen a 600% increase in requests for help since the lockdown began, and it’s getting harder to fill the food parcels. “Initially it was largely foreign nationals needing help what we’re seeing now is more New Zealand residents,” Wilson says. “We’re putting together 20 to 30 food parcels every day (Monday to Saturday) as well as additional emergency food packs and we’re now needing to ensure that our food parcels go to the highest needs first. “It’s so good to receive healthy things like nutritious muesli bars and fruit we can use. Fruit is really hard for us because we have to ensure it’s been stored correctly and this has been stored under a commercial food control programme which is perfect.” Real Journeys area manager Jason Steele drove the snacks up by truck the 290km from Milford Sound yesterday afternoon. The stock was due to expire in a few months. “Where better to bring it than Queenstown which has been so hard hit by what’s happening in tourism,” says Steele. Wayfare acting chief executive Ian Jackson says with no visitors, all Wayfare companies are carefully evaluating what stock they need as part of their preparations for tourism in Alert Level 2. “This is the kind of community initiative Real Journeys is renowned for and our teams will be pleased to know these supplies have gone to a good home. Many of our visitors to Milford Sound arrive via Queenstown so it’s very fitting.”

The NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival is confirmed The NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival will go ahead this year in late June. The popular festival and competition showcases inspiring adventure films and books each year in Wanaka and Queenstown. Some of the most adventurous people in the world have been welcomed as guest speakers, including free climber Alex Honnold two years before he completed his epic free solo of Yosemite’s El Capitan. This year, the festival has already received more than 188 entries to its filmmaker competition from filmmakers all over the world, including a record 25 from New Zealand. The charitable trust behind the festival have created a flexible plan, able to be adapted to any restriction level. This includes several smaller events as well as online screenings of the festival favourites. The programme will be announced on June 1. Festival Director Mark Sedon says: “We feel it is important to run our event, albeit a little differently to other years. “Based on feedback we feel that by the time we get to late June everyone will be ready to get out and about, providing they feel they are safe. Our core goal is to bring some inspiration to our audience when they need it most and continue to bring people in our adventure community together both on- and off-line. “Our hope is that we are in Level 1 or 2 by this time; regardless, we will have some awesome viewing ready for the festival fans.” The 18th NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival is scheduled to run live in five venues in Wanaka and Queenstown simultaneously from June 26 to 28. The smaller venues will restrict numbers and allow for social distancing and seat numbers for contact tracing should it be required. The events will include the popular Opening Night, guest speakers, award winning films and books. The best of the 188 films will make up the sessions in these categories: NZ Pure, Snow Show, Environmental and Cultural. These sessions will be hosted nationally online from June 26 to July 5. Sedon says the ability to run the event this year has been largely due to the continued generosity of sponsors, patron and friend donations. Queenstown Lakes District Council and Community Lakes Trust, as well as many long-term sponsors, have supported the reshaping of the event. “The continued financial support from our backers has been incredible and the feedback and donations from our audience have been so encouraging. These contributions mean we can give 2020 our best shot and look forward to being in a strong position to host our full-scale event in 2021. After 18 years of building this event we are incredibly appreciative and humbled by the support.” The award-winning films and books will be announced on June 1 when the full festival programme and tickets will be made available at www.mountainfilm.nz
Drug raid in the ‘burbs Queenstown police have charged a 33-year-old man with possession of meth for supply following a pre-dawn raid in the suburbs. Armed officers, with a dog unit, served a search warrant on a house on Red Cottage Drive, Bridesdale, Lake Hayes, at 6.30am last Thursday. Using a loud hailer, they ordered one of the residents out into the dark street with his hands on his head, before requesting other occupants to leave the property and then searching it. Acting Detective Sergeant Simon Matheson, Queenstown CIB, says the arrest was “part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of methamphetamine in the Queenstown area”. The man has appeared in Queenstown District Court facing charges of possession of methamphetamine for supply, and offer to supply methamphetamine, and has been remanded on bail to reappear next Monday [18th]. During the search warrant police recovered a quantity of methamphetamine and cash, but would not reveal how much. The man was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. It is the second meth raid in the resort in recent months. A property in Fernhill was raided in early April. “Queenstown Police are committed to disrupting the sale and supply of methamphetamine in the community, and holding those responsible to account. “Police will continue to investigate and take action in response to reports and information about this offending.” Anyone with information about meth dealing is asked to call 105, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Arts+Culture We gonna sing Wang Dang Doodles all night long! Imagine a boxy brick production studio. Four screens, 3 keyboards, and window peeking into a janitor’s closet, consisting only a mic and headphones in there. The studio is littered with ‘real groovy’ band posters, an electric guitar and amp tucked in the corner and doodles. Hand-drawn doodles EVERYWHERE! Pinned to the wall, tacked to the screen and pens scattered over the jumbo sized office writing pad. A doodle a day was the goal. Doodling in between voiceover sessions and on weekends. This was Lauren Prebble circa 2014 in Ponsonby Auckland. She had just left Queenstown to become first the female production engineer (since forever) to make, quote, ‘shit radio adverts nationwide’. It was in this tiny creative space, were Wang Dang Doodles was dreamed up. The name, a nod to the song ‘Wang dang doodle’ by Howl ‘in Wolf, 1961. These daily doodles released online, through a fresh-off-the-market, instagram platform and common, social, Facebook. Daily dang doodles gathered a small but supportive following (even management encouraged them). The stint in Auckland lasted only 18 months. Something had to give with the long-distance relationship with a Queenstown based boy. Lauren returned, swooned but in a state of unemployment. The dole days were naturally filled with doodles, getting more detailed, some even started to move. Dang doodles got the odd doodle commission, like creating a cartoon series of pop musicians as animals for ‘Edge TV’, a snowy animated playground for a snowboarding film. Fluttering on the internet’s surface but immensely under-promoted hobby. 2016 provided a creative break for Lauren with Lakes Weekly Bulletin, ending the jobless cycle. Lauren was to help the company’s new endeavor into TV content. The paper doodles were put on hold, the attention was directed to video production as this was to be self-taught. LWBTV became a weekly entertainment piece for the community. Interviewing locals, going through the events of the weekend and occasionally getting out of the bubble with beloved jockcomedian, Henry Youngman. Doodles started to creep into these videos. Retro MS Paint the made animating doodles far easier. Jim Boult caricatures started appearing in the Bulletin. In 2019 doodles found a comfy space among the monthly culture magazine, Source. Doodles started to get satire, political, environmental! Like the ‘Choose real girlfriends’ doodle for plastic free July. Doodles got crafty, like the DIY instructables on plant care. So now you know who was behind those silly doodles in our community publications. As the nation faces the repercussions of a Covid world, the doodle artist now finds herself in a similar situation as before. With a lot of time on her hands. Perhaps, it’s time to give Wang Dang Doodles the exposure and love it deserves (starting with this awkward self-written, third person account for Arts & Culture). COMMUNITY NOTES Queenstown Greypower Grey Power is an organisation for older people. During the lockdown we have been in constant contact with our members online advising of services available and help for those socially and physically isolated. Committee members have been phoning those not online on a regular basis. We cannot meet at present and our planned AGM for April, was postponed till later in the year. There are over 70 associations nationwide. Grey Power is not political but has strong lobbying power. Recent achievements are a rates rebate scheme for retirement homes and introduction of the free shingles vaccine for those between 65 and 80 years of age. Grey Power Electricity provides a reduced price of power to members through Pulse Energy. Grey Power is presently campaigning for an Aged Care Commissioner. Queenstown Grey Power has over 180 members. Interesting meetings are held for both members and the public and the occasional social function. Aurora Lines Company, Queenstown Medical Centre and Grey Power Electricity were subjects in the last few months. We hosted an election meeting for Health Board and Regional Council candidates. Members are free to seek advocacy help. The restructuring of HealthCare NZ, one of the country’s biggest care providers has been of concern to our members. Queenstown Grey Power is recognised as a stakeholder group in the community and has been involved in consultations on the QLDC Spatial Plan, the Martin Jenkins consultation on airport development, future planning for the library service and on health issues. We have presented submissions to the QLDC and the ORC on behalf of members. A number of members spoke at the council meeting in December against the proposed trial of Lime Scooters. Grey Power was successful in lobbying for the Age Concern falls prevention exercise class, “Steady As You Go” coming to Queenstown. Weekly classes are held in Frankton and Arrowtown. Queenstown Grey Power has been supported by the Community Trust of Southland, Wakatipu New World, Mt Scene and the Lakes Weekly Bulletin. We are friendly, approachable and welcome new people. With more members we have more influence in being a voice for the senior community. Membership is open to all over 50 and subscriptions are $20 a single and $35 per couple. Erin Jackson, part of the SVA Leadership Team & Queenstown local said to LWB “With the arrival of COVID, it became very clear that for many, getting to the supermarket for essentials will be a huge challenge: especially with limited online options in the area”. The Student Volunteer Army have partnered with New World and built an online shop (shop.sva.org.nz) - or you can order by calling 0800 005 902. “Volunteers then pick up your order the next morning and deliver, contactlessly to your door with a friendly smile and all within 48 hours. It’s perfect for those who can’t just ‘pop to the supermarket’, whether due to age, health or circumstance”. Life in the new Wakatipu is definitely going to be different, and a better different. One big difference is that there are no weekly whinges - I know this because my mother, who is the head of the Wakatipu Citizens Unsolicited Advice Bureau, has been whining about the lack of weekly whinges in the LWB. She’s advised me to write some so here goes... 1. That infuriating and pointless development at the bottom of McEntyre hill (yes, the one that blocks the traffic on Lake Hayes Road all the time) is now sneakily trying to push through a massive (160 houses!) old people’s village - really? There are already two other retirement complexes that have been built and not anywhere near sold out, plus Millbrook is doing a huge new subdivision. Has anyone at QLDC looked at the census and seen that this massive bubble of older people is coming to an end? Since the pill became available, (for contraception, sorry, not coronavirus) smaller and smaller families have become the norm. I’m at the tail end of the bubble and will have a massive selection of houses to choose from, unless I’m in jail for murdering my husband - I love him but don’t believe marriage is meant to be about 24/7 togetherness... 2. PLEASE can we get rid of the hideous green 40km motorway signs at the entrances to Arrowtown - there are masses of talented, creative Arrowtowners who could design something more in keeping with our environment than those eyesores. Even painting pedestrian crossings every few hundred metres would work better and be less offensive. Enough enough - whinge over Libraries, cinemas and other bliss spots are all going to be open - Dorothy Browns is very keen for the community to let them know which movies they’d particularly like to see screened - email dorothy@dorothybrowns.com with your wish lists and they will try and make them come true. There’s also a very lovely surprise at the cinema when it reopens - I’m not allowed to say what it is, and I am nearly busting to try it. Secrets are very challenging for me. The hearing for the Olive Leaf community centre is happening soon and its huge group of supporters is keeping fingers and everything else crossed that it will be approved. It’s wonderful that the historic buildings and trees in the town have been protected, and that no buildings taller than a tree can get built - keeps it all on a human scale, but it’s time for this truly new and wonderful architectural masterpiece to be built. There’s still a huge shortage of community spaces and this one will not only create a lot of jobs in the short term, but will be a major tourist drawcard forever. Even better, it’s not going to cost the community a dollar. Win-win all round. I’m not so interested in whinges, but I’m always delighted to hear your ideas for ways to keep our beautiful basin in clean and sparkling order, not overflowing with dirty water and grotty people using and abusing it.

1. Compost and mulch. Tidy up the bed and apply a generous layer of compost, 2 – 5cm thick. Cover this with a generous layer of straw mulch. This is one of the most beneficial ‘putting to sleep’ methods there is. You’ve inoculated the soil with all those compost microbes and popped a cosy blanket over the top. 2. Plant a winter green manure. You need to get this in quick. At this time of year, sow a thick bed of broad beans. They’re very hardy and will grow all winter long, sending sugars and carbohydrates into the root zone, feeding your microbes and keeping the populations high, alive and active. They’re also fixing atmospheric nitrogen on root nodules for future plants to use. Come early spring, chop up with a freshly sharpened spade and dig into the top 10 – 15cm of soil. 3. Manure and mulch. This is my ‘I don’t have enough compost’ approach. Put a thick layer of manure on to the soil surface and cover with a straw mulch layer. Let the worms and the winter’s freeze thaw cycles do the hard work for you. Come spring, the bed’s ready to go. 4. Lasagne method. Add multiple alternate layers of carbon rich and nitrogen rich ingredients; place a small compost pile directly on the bed, then a layer of manure, a layer of straw, a layer of grass clippings, a layer of shredded cardboard… and so on. You can get pretty high. The last layer should be straw. You could even chuck in a small handful of compost worms. 5. Bokashi buckets. This is fast becoming one my favourite systems for dealing with food scraps and turning them into a fertiliser for the veggie garden. All winter long, dig in the contents of your Bokashi bucket into all your veggie beds. Cover the beds with a mulch to stop the rain causing any soil compaction.
