Golf, getting ahead of the curve The Wakatipu Basin possesses some of the best golf courses and facilities in the country. Tens of thousands of golfers - locals and visitors - share these spectacular courses every year, and contribute a considerable amount to the local economy in the process.

Tuesday 24th March 2020, the last time we roamed the beautifully manicured fairways and greens, the last day we shared stories and enjoyed the company of friends and family whilst contemplating what would happen next. Little did we suspect that the sanctuary’s we often use to escape the day to day hustle and bustle, the places we utilise for relaxation, health and well-being, would be shut down with futures now uncertain.

The game will look a little different, adjustments will need to be made, restrictions will be implemented to protect us all and to ensure we have an opportunity to start again. Tee bookings will be essential to allow contact tracing if required, a game that normally encourages social gatherings will instead enforce social distancing. A temporary set of guidelines that will still be prohibitive for some, but will allow golf addictions by the hundreds to enter a rehabilitation phase.

So, for now let us take this opportunity to help kickstart our local economy, to support the game that has been chosen ahead of most others, to lead the sport and recreation sector back to its feet. Ultimately this is about control where NZ gets back in the driving seat again. We monitor the volumes & the peaks & lows of the seasons and have absolute control over the means of conveyance. Let’s sort out the Freedom Camping & poor driving issues before they even get in the door.

So come on Queenstown, how about a few ideas out there. This change has to come at a grass roots level. There is too much dogma & ingrained theory with the Council & Government tourist gurus.

’We plan to open mountains’ – NZ Ski and Wayfare ski bosses Dust off your skis and snowboards - Queenstown Lakes will have a ski season this year if coronavirus controls allow it.

NZSki boss Paul Anderson and Wayfare’s Bridget Legnavsky updated the resort’s business community on Friday via a Chamber of Commerce zoom meeting.

Both said they are committed to opening at least one of their mountains each when the season begins in June.

If the country is still at Covid-19 alert level two, it will be for a local market and on the condition the industry can negotiate with Government about what constitutes a mass gathering of 500 people.

But they hope the restrictions will be downgraded to alert level one by then, and they’ll be able to welcome North Islanders too.

“One of the main points we’re working on at the moment with government is to clarify their restriction on mass gatherings of 500 people.

The industry has suggested those restrictions should only apply to areas where people come together, such as queues and restaurants.

Cardrona Alpine Resort general manager Bridget Legnavsky said “The good thing about the ski industry is that we have a strong domestic market, 50-60% of our business is domestic, so as an industry we hope that this will help generate the economy down in this region, especially if we get to level one.

Legnavsky said the company has kept hold of all of its permanent staff across Cardrona and Treble Cone, either through subsidy or continuing working.

“We are 100% dedicated and committed to getting both resorts ready to open and we will start those final preparations on Tuesday.”

Thirty-six staff will begin work on Tuesday, working in bubbles.

Mild earthquake was felt on Monday An earthquake measuring 5.6 situated 40 km north of Te Anau caused a prolonged rolling feeling in Queenstown this morning.

The earthquake struck at 10.52 this morning and is the second largest earthquake in Fiordland in recent days. On Saturday a 5.0 earthquake struck in the same location.

NZSki operates Coronet Peak ski field and The Remarkables, and Wayfare operates Cardrona Alpine Resort and Wanaka’s Treble Cone.

Workers will return to the ski fields on Tuesday, under alert level three, to prep for the start of the season.

NZSki’s Paul Anderson says the staff have been buoyed by the positive encouragement from the Queenstown community.

“The overwhelming message has been ‘can you just please get something open for the ski season’, and we’re committed to doing that,” Anderson says.

He says opening up to all domestic business “will be a massive benefit to the wider business community and really kick-start those revenues flowing back into our hotels, bars and restaurants.”

But the big question on everyone’s mind, even in his own bubble, is whether the company will open Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, or both, he says.

“In all honesty, it is one hell of a conundrum for us. At the moment, we’re still working through a range of options that would work for Queenstown for the season.”

“I can say for sure that under level two we will be operating and there will be acres of wide open space for all our loyal locals.”

Moving to level three from Tuesday allows the company to restart maintenance and projects, including the installation of the Sugar chairlift at The Remarks. There’s about eight weeks’ work left on that project.

The ski industry as a whole has reached out to MBIE to explain how it can maintain social distancing while operating, with such things as spaced queuing and chairlifts, and cashless payments, and also enable contact tracing if needed.

Geonet is describing the quake as moderate with a depth of 67km.

Boult delivers sobering assessment Queenstown Lakes economy will shrink by 40% and unemployment is likely to reach between 25-30%.

These are the “sobering, chilling facts of the reality before us” Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult told councillors and the community on Thursday last week.

Boult delivered an address at the start of the online full council meeting.

Here’s some of what he said:

Businesses project a long road ahead for Queenstown A flash poll of 420 Queenstown Lakes business people showed threequarters believe tourist numbers will return to pre-coronavirus levels within four years.

The poll was held in a Chamber of Commerce zoom meeting on Friday, where ski bosses, Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult and Chamber boss Anna Mickell all gave updates on the town’s response to Covid-19.

Only 3% believed visitor numbers will return to the volume of February 2019 within the next 12 months.

A fifth (20%) reckoned it would take 18 months, while the majority (39%) estimated it would take three years. Some 14% thought it will take four years, 23% longer than four years, and only 1% predicted Queenstown would never see such numbers again.

The poll provides some indication of the mood of the business community facing the harshest environment in the resort’s recent history.

“Literally in little over a month, we have gone from New Zealand’s most successful district, with a growing population and a growing GDP, to potentially one of the poorest districts in New Zealand. The harsh reality is that the cold breath of what has struck us now will be felt for years to come.

“Many in our community understandably worry about their future in our district. Regrettably, we are likely to see a migration of some of our younger people away from the district simply through lack of job opportunities.

“We have a massive task before us. It is a task that we must undertake together. The time for squabbles over matters that are no longer relevant is gone. For a very long period of time, growth will cease to be a subject for discussion and instead our mantra will be survival.

“So, where to from here?

• Moving from complete lockdown to level three. I doubt that this will make a lot of difference to most of us. That will more likely come when level two is declared in (hopefully) a couple of weeks’ time.

• Our concentration at this time must go into how we recover, how we ensure that there is a meal on the table for those who can no longer provide for their families and how an adequate level of support is provided for those in real trouble within our communities.

• “Council has, along with many others in the district, asked government for assistance to undertake and support some of its “shovel ready” projects in the Queenstown Lakes area. This work has the triple intentions of getting some of the major infrastructure projects we have sought for years underway, providing an economic boost to our economy and creating jobs for our struggling community. I have a high level of expectation that government is listening to us and that we are likely to have their support in these projects.

• We must diversify our economy. “Our community is very much based on the tourism economy. Many in our community, and I count myself as one of those, look to a future where we are no longer so dependent on tourism. In the future, we must do things differently.

“Our immediate concern right now however, must focus on getting our economy moving to ensure those in our community have an income.

“We need to do all we can to encourage visitors back here. The international markets will be some time in returning, but given that last year 36% of our visitor mix was domestic, we need to do all we can to welcome Kiwis here. Likewise, we are interested in the work to create a trans-Tasman “bubble”, provided we can be sure our Aussie are as clear of COVID-19 as we are, which may re-introduce our second largest market.

“So, while we desire to see change in the future, the partial recovery of our tourism industry must be our main short-term goal.

Ngai Tahu Tourism announced on Thursday it is closing its dozen businesses indefinitely, with 300 jobs under threat. Five of those businesses are based in Queenstown, so more than 100 jobs could be lost, including at the iconic Shotover Jet. And yesterday, Stuff reported other major Queenstown tourism businesses were looking at job losses.

Skyline Enterprises boss Geoff McDonald said the company, which employs 300 people in the resort, had circulated a restructuring proposal to staff on Tuesday but he would not divulge any details, Stuff reported.

Wayfare, whose brands include Real Journeys, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Go Orange, has not made any permanent staff redundant yet, but that is an option once the wage subsidy ends.

NZONE skydive is in a similar situation, as is AJ Hackett Bungy, which has so far retained all 220 permanent staff members. Unlike Ngai Tahu Tourism, it intends to restart operations as soon as possible.

Boult addresses support for those in need and thanks those helping in the response and recovery efforts ”Nearly five weeks ago, Council activated the emergency operations centre and the Wānaka incident control centre, with a large team drawn from across QLDC’s many functions, and increasingly with support from other individuals, volunteers and organisations in the district. Said Mayor Jim Boult at last weeks council meeting “Since then they have been working seven days a week to provide community messaging and advice, to maintain a consistent stream of intelligence and data, to plan for best and worst case scenarios, and to source essential services and supplies. Looking further out the, the QLDC Recovery Team has been meeting with MSD, Immigration NZ, and MBIE weekly to brief them on the situation, and seek additional support.

I personally have engaged with central government at every possible opportunity and at all levels to make our unique case.

“But without doubt the welfare team response has been unprecedented.

As of Friday, we have received 8,422 requests for welfare support via an online registration portal on the QLDC website. Approximately threequarters of this number are in New Zealand on employment visas, and one-quarter have dependents or other family members requiring support.

“The most common requests are for food and grocery essentials (80%) and housing or rental support (20%). There are also smaller numbers seeking bedding, clothing, and help with utility and medical costs. The most common reason for food requests is to enable people to use what little money they have to pay other bills. Many people are accruing rental debt or depleting savings (if they have any) to sustain their current living situation.

“Queenstown Lakes has a significant population of migrant workers, many of whom are newly unemployed as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown and not eligible for government financial support due to their visa status.

The migrant workers are a key part of the economy and community in the district and the continued stress under which they are currently living is having a wide-reaching effect. When restrictions on movement are loosened, some of those able to leave the Queenstown Lakes district will do so. However, we believe that their significant need for support will remain as options to find work in tourism and hospitality are limited globally.

“All of these underline how important the work of the emergency response team, and in particular the welfare team, has been and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. This is our community in need, and I am proud to see how this district is pulling together to support each other. This is a tremendous community spirit and kindness that I hope we will see maintained long into our future.

“Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who has been a part of the response and recovery teams. There are too many of you to name individually but you know who you are and the genuine difference you have made in this country’s fight against COVID-19 and to the lives of those individuals and families in need.

You have worked so hard over the last month and given so much of yourselves. There is a long road ahead to get through, but I know you’re up for the task, and together as a community we will get through this.”

No new cases in Queenstown in over a week Queenstown is celebrating over a week since its last Covid-19 diagnosis and now has just 8 active cases.

District mayor Jim Boult, in a Chamber of Commerce zoom meeting this afternoon, confirmed 79 of the district’s 87 cases have recovered. No one has died.

“That’s really great news,” he said.

“We look like we’re on the way to beating this thing and let’s hope we stay that way when the restrictions come off.

“I do caution everyone to obey those distancing rules. It would be a shame to lose the progress that we’ve made.”

The Southern District Health Board says further voluntary community testing of asymptomatic patients in the district is underway, following a request from the Ministry of Health.

The first groups to be tested are people in Queenstown living in shortterm accommodation or backpackers’ hostels, starting today and over the next few days.

The further testing is targeting higher risk communities that may have been exposed to the virus, or where people may not have been well represented in our overall testing. This includes health care workers, Māori and Pacific people, and those with a history of international travel such as those staying in backpackers’ hostels.

“We are working closely with WellSouth and testing to reach the other identified target groups will be undertaken in the coming week”.

Southern DHB Medical Officer of Health Dr Susan Jack says the additional targeted testing supplements the information we already have, with a particular focus on trying to uncover any pockets of disease that have not yet reached our attention.

“Again, we thank everyone for their cooperation in helping us learn as much as we can about the prevalence of the virus in our community, and helping to inform the extent to which we can relax the restrictions we’ve been living with in recent weeks as we’ve worked to control this outbreak.”

Queenstown airport statement of intent to be revised after significantly changed outlook Queenstown Lakes District councillors have accepted the statement of intent (SOI) from Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) in last weeks meeting.

The SOI, which was written prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, lays out the company’s intentions and priorities for the year and is legally required to be presented to council.

QAC accepted that the pre-COVID-19 statement doesn’t reflect the current environment and will present a second, revised draft in October.

There were 78 emails on the topic submitted to the council’s public forum at the meeting, which was conducted online.

The council last year rejected two drafts of the SOI before deciding to receive a modified draft in December. Facing community pressure, it also commissioned a report on the social, economic and environmental impacts of airport development.

QAC deputy chair Adrienne Cooper acknowledged the concerns raised in public forum and said the COVID-19 pandemic has led to QAC being a “significantly changed business” with much uncertainty in the short to medium term.

The expansion of noise boundaries is off the agenda, there are no scheduled flights into the airport and when flights resume they will be at a “lower level”, and QAC’s revenue has been “significantly impacted” by events, she said.

Adrienne also said QAC was committed to not starting any new capital projects before a new SOI was approved. There are no “secret projects”, she said, itemising projects in the SOI around improving compliance, security, and seismic strengthening within the airport’s current footprint.

Councillor Penny Clark said the community’s concerns about noise boundaries and growth had been “blown out of the water” by COVID-19.

“Mother Nature has gazumped us, and we need to move on,” she said, adding the QAC would need five months to create a “worthwhile document” in the revised SOI in October.

Wanaka Ward councillor and deputy mayor Calum McLeod said he would be looking for a shift from “sustainability to regenerative” in the modified SOI later this year, calling it “the single best opportunity” to reimagine our economic future.

I’ve lived in the Wakatipu for a very long time, and I thought I knew pretty well everyone who was doing the most interesting things here, but a couple of powerhouse American women who kindly bought some tickets for the Cancer Society’s Great Gatsby ball taught me that there is a huge flock of fabulous birds of every age, nationality and profession living in the Wakatipu.

Jennifer Belmont is known to everyone as the architect of the Wakatipu Community Foundation which seems to have a finger in every pie that feeds and nourishes our community, be it schools, sports, cultural projects or now the Greatest Needs Fund which is literally helping feed and care for all the local workers who have lost their jobs and really need support.

Kristen Holtzman knows a lot about philanthropy too, and she brought Carrie Morgridge to Queenstown in February to talk to a lucky group of locals who learnt about making every gift count. Kaye Parker organised such an excellent itinerary for Carrie’s three days in town that she fell in love with the Wakatipu (who doesn’t?) and has pledged a substantial amount to the Queenstown Trails Trust, local schools, and the Nature Conservancy. Carrie’s father in law is Chairman Emeritus of technology giant Cisco Systems and he gave her an incredible wedding present - he put her in charge of giving away the income of a huge fund he had set up, so every year she has to choose what projects it goes to . How wonderful would that be? She plans on coming back next year as well to do even more good things.

I love supporting pet projects but always feel my donation is only a tiny drop and can hardly make any difference, so I was over the moon to be invited to join the first Impact100 group in New Zealand. It’s been going in America for a long time, and Kristen realised that in a small place like this, its impact can be huge. It’s such a simple idea - find 100 women who want to donate $1000, then invite existing local groups to explain how they could use $100,000 to best effect. In doing so, they learn a lot about applying for grants (quite an art!) and the women involved learn a lot about the needs in their community. As you can imagine, $100,000 is an extremely useful chunk of money.

The first meeting was just before the lockdown was announced and immediately 48 women signed up, and now that life might start getting a bit more normal in the next few months, there will be some more meetings. Do have a look online at Impact100 - it’s extremely simple and helpful. Apart from that, it looks like being a lot of fun.

What woman doesn’t love being in a group of generous, positive friends who like helping make their community better? Sorry, chaps but it’s only women at this stage - if you want to support it, you are very welcome to sponsor a woman you think would enjoy being part of it, and who might not have $1000 to sign up. Each woman gets a vote in deciding which group it should go to. The membership form is above with an email if you want to know more.

The locals couldn’t have been kinder to these strangers who knew nothing about farming, and we have tried our hardest to repay that by doing as much as we could for this wonderful place ever since. I’m old now, and Impact100 sounds such a fun project that lets me do as much or as little as I can cope with, plus keeps me in contact with interesting people doing their bit for others.

Kumara and Cauliflower Tacos with Chipotle Mayonnaise (Vegetarian and Gluten Free ) (Easy to make vegan!)

Ingredients

Preparation

TACOS: • 1 cauliflower head • 2 large kumara • Olive Oil • Spices: salt, pepper, roasted paprika, chilli powder, cumin, garlic powder • 1/4 red cabbage • 2 cans black beans • 2 cloves garlic • Corn Tortillas

RECIPE:

SAUCE: • Chipotle Sauce • Mayonnaise (use vegan mayo to make entire recipe vegan)

7. Bring garlic, olive oil and drained black bean can to heat on stove

EXTRAS: • Lime • Jalapenos • Avocado

1. Preheat oven to 220 degrees celcius 2. Dice kumara and cauliflower and put onto baking sheets 3. Lightly coat in olive oil and add spices: salt, pepper, roasted paprika, chili powder, and cumin 4. Mix around so everything is coated and put in over for 40 minutes (stir every 15) 5. Mix together in a bowl the chipotle with mayonnaise until desired level of flavour and spice 6. Chop red cabbage into thin strips and put into a bowl

8. Heat corn tortillas 30 seconds each side on a hot pan, lightly dip into water for added texture 9. Take veggies out of oven when nice and soft 10. Assemble tortilla with cabbage, veggies, beans, sauce and any other garnishes your heart desires!

SOURDOUGH PANCAKES Head Chef, Trent Watson, is keeping busy during the COVID-19 lockdown by testing out some new dishes and keeping his lovely wife, Bianca, well fed (while she captures these images for us). The first recipe he has shared are these savoury Sourdough Pancakes, a take on a classic breakfast dish with the options to make it vegan.

METHOD: • In a large bowl, mix together all of the ingredients (except for the sourdough starter) until the pancake batter resembles a runny texture.

• Add starter to mixture and leave too prove for 1 hour (until it doubles) • Heat a pan with a minimal amount of oil • Once the pan is warm, pour the mixture into egg rings or pastry cutters filling them about up about 2/3 • Cook the pancakes until it starts to bubble in the middle then remove the rings and flip • Cook for another 2-3 minutes until cooked through

INGREDIENTS: • 50g sourdough starter • 100g flour • 100g milk – soy if vegan • 2 eggs – omit if vegan • 25g melted butter – coconut oil if vegan • 5g salt • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp baking powder *Note: I recommend using egg rings or pastry cutters

SERVE: Stack the pancakes 2 – 3 high and top with wilted baby spinach, rice paper bacon (or prosciutto for your carnivores) and top with poached eggs or cherry tomatoes.

If someone had asked me prior to lockdown what’d I’d miss most if I couldn’t leave my house, I wouldn’t have realised that leaving my house is one of my greatest joys. I always thought that being at home and having my garden was the most important thing, but actually, what I miss most is seeing my friends and family, trit trotting round my favourite walks, going to movies and yoga and being part of the neighbourhood (and travelling, my secret shame…). Oh and Patagonia chocolate. I have hidden some of their dark chocolate almonds away from my family in case of dire emergency. I came close to needing them yesterday as needlephobic me needed some blood tests and even with multiple stabs, they failed to get even a single drop. Vampires would hate me - I must be one of those cold, reptilian types… However, as I left the lab, a text pinged saying that there was a box of Tramontana icecream in my letterbox. OH JOY! This really is the most sensational community. Luckily with Level 3 they can do click and collect so anyone else needing that Patagonia fix can satisfy their craving.

A propos of community - huge rounds of applause for the Central Lakes Trust which has given away over $100 million since it started in 2000. The money came from the sale of local power generation when it was all privatised, and there were some who wanted the cash to be disbursed among all the people who had electricity accounts - it would have been about $2000 per household - enough for a new set of tyres.

Luckily, smarter people won the day and it was all put into this magnificent trust which is now worth nearly three times what it was, and whose sole purpose is to help Central Otago community projects.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably spending far too much time on social media and some of the challenges people are putting up are wonderful. I love the View from my Window page on FB which lets people show what they can see from their houses all over the world - from glorious, grand gardens with exotic animals in to some with a viewblocking concrete wall.

Like Dollar Street, it makes you feel very lucky to live here dangerously addictive. There’s also a challenge to post photos of yourself in younger days - some lucky people look fabulous but my mother obviously hated me and my school photo from when I was 8 has made lots of people feel much better about their photogeneticness (is that even a word?) Always happy to help… I’m going to make it my mission to learn salsa dancing this winter - if anyone knows of any salsa teachers locally who would like to teach it on Zoom for the moment, please let me know, and maybe lots of other people would like to learn too - it is a very good way to keep warm. I hope the powers that be won’t ban it on account of the danger factor - I managed to crash into a lot of people last time I tried.

Place of work and are you still trading during the lock down?

Bidfood Queenstown and when I’m not there I am teaching Pilates at pilateswithsimonequeenstown.

Yes, Bidfood is an essential service so I’ve still been working though the lockdown. Work has diversified though and we have all worked on new areas like Bidfood home or Bidfood on wheels and then making sure our customers are okay and being there for them when they are ready to open. I’ve also been teaching Pilates via zoom and Facebook messenger which has been a learning experience in itself.

How long in QT and why did you choose to live here?

4 years nearly! It was time to come back to NZ as I had been travelling Europe and living in France in the mountains. I loved it and the closest thing to that was Queenstown in NZ. Also there may have been a man involved who asked me to come with him.

Recommended must-do activity during isolation time?

Clock some series on Netflix. Then learn/do something new within the lockdown rules, maybe that thing you have been putting off for years?

Is there anyone who you would love to be isolating with?

None other than Joel Gebbie. My fiancé and number one.

What is your best isolation experience so far?

Exploring the community and finding these hidden walks you never knew existed. Oh and the community spirit, just lots of little things people are doing to help each other out. Gives me warm fuzzies.

What is the first thing you’re going to do when you get out of iso?

Go out to dinner with friends and have some drinks.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read in the past week?

That some lady called Sylvia Brown predicted covid 19 would happen in 2020, so I googled her and found her book titled ’End of Days’ and I read it.

The book isn’t what you’d expect, but it’s a pretty fascinating take on humans evolution and how we have always wondered about the end of our race.

Then because she is a claimed psychic she tells you what happens when you die. That bit is cool and very interesting.

Is there anything you have discovered about yourself, since going into lockdown?

My normal life is extremely busy. I have realised I may want to reduce that a bit and spend more time connecting with the people I love.

What’s on your bucket list?

Would love to travel through Canada to Central America and getting married here in Queenstown.

What are 3 things you’re grateful for during this isolation?

My health, that I live here and the people in my life.

What’s the best bad decision you ever made?

Probably agreeing to go on a date with Joel. Lead to the best thing.

Who is your inspiration?

It would have to be Jacinda Ardern currently, what an absolute legend. Her ability to lead, calmly and concisely, yet still be so relatable.

What’s your best piece of advice?

Follow your gut or your intuition at all times. The more you trust or be true to yourself the more you let go of fear and embrace you. Then life just flows. Deep, I know.

It has been an interesting time so far, we have seen such kindness to others, creativity, humor, uplifting stories such as Captain Tom Moore and his 100 length garden walk to raise over 27 million for the NHS, humans are amazing. We have been busy these last few weeks too, as someone who runs a Coaching company helping others overcome anxiety, fears and phobias, we have been in high demand right now.

‘Your Life Live It’ currently has 18 Coaches working with us around the globe and COVID has had a huge impact on mental and emotional wellbeing, we are lucky we have so many Coaches to help out. This has allowed us to set up a Front Line Health Care workers support group, created an online course called ‘Prepare Don’t Panic’ and given away online tools to help people to become more resourceful in these uncertain times so yep, we have been busy, good busy.

And now we have been asked by the Hospitality Industry to create a bespoke online program, the goal is to give people simple and easy tools to navigate this next stage as businesses create their new normal. There is so much fear, so much worry about what the future looks like in this industry and in our town, so now is when people need help to become resourceful.

The program is designed for anyone in Hospitality and it is free, it would normally retail at $997, the course is all online and can be done on their own time frame.

We have been asking the industry what its immediate and longer term needs are and created the program around that feedback.

The first thing that everyone has said is the feeling of not being in control, fear and worry about how to future looks, then there is the concern as we move to a new normal, who will be the customers, where will the people come from, will the business survive and if so how does that look?

The program will take the person from feeling fear to taking control, then to creating a plan that creates action, yet being able to move quickly as the landscape changes, learning and having flexibility to adapt fast.

We know that people who have flexibility and change quickly will succeed, we are masters at change, we just don’t like it. Yet think about how quickly we have adapted to this new way of life, it seems ages ago since we walked down the busy Mall or Arrowtown Main Street, we have all adapted.

We are so thankful to create this program, we know it will help this industry but more importantly it will help each individual who finds themselves frightened, panicked and not sleeping well at night. It will help them get through this, out the others side and make the best choices for their families and their business.

Being asked to create something that helps people in this way, is why I love what I do. Please share this with anyone you know who could benefit from this program, it will go out internationally yet we have designed this with Queenstown in the forefront of our minds, we will be hit hard.

COVID-19 RESPONSE WITH FOOD ON Q. WHAT WE’RE DOING FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Food On Q Ltd 24/04/2020 Danny Sykes Danny@Foodonq.nz 0277873387 Food On Q are Queenstown’s local online ordering and food delivery platform, partnering with over 60 hospitality businesses in the area. They have found themselves in a unique position where they’re able to operate throughout alert level 3, and can actively support local businesses and the community. Their service helps people stay at home and stick to social distancing guidelines, whilst ordering from their favourite restaurants for either home delivery, or contactless pickup.

In light of COVID-19, Food On Q director Danny Sykes and team, have been hard at work to ensure their operation will be as safe as possible as we move into alert level 3 on Tuesday. They’re working to do everything they can to support their partnered businesses and their customers as much as possible.

Food On Q have lowered their commission charges for all partners o erati thro h alert le el to ro i e fi a cial assista ce a they’ve also removed the sign up fee to help new businesses come onto the platform. They have also removed any fees that were in place for online pickup orders, allowing partnered businesses to receive contactless pickup orders, with zero cost to them. “We hope the lowering of our commission will help our partners a little bit through alert level 3. At the end of the day, we are nothing without our restaurant partners, and we will try our best to assist wherever we can throughout this time.”

Danny goes on to say that “We fully appreciate that it is not just businesses that have been affected by this situation. Our local community and customer base have also been hit very hard, so we are working on rolling out a new loyalty/membership programme, which will make our service a lot more affordable.”Danny says this will be available mid May, with more details being announced soon. “Added to that, we’ll also be offering 50% off delivery fees for all essential workers in the area, to thank them for looking after us so well. And, providing each and every one of our customers with a free delivery voucher to use in May.” More details about this will be provided on their social media pages in the coming days.

Food On Q will be continuing with their contactless deliveries, as well as providing hand sanitizer to each of their drivers, and deep cleaning all equipment on a daily basis. Danny says “Working with food you need to be extremely attentive to the cleanliness of your equipment, regardless of a global pandemic. Our team will have strict measures in place to make sure this is being managed more effectively than ever”.

Delivery services, mainly UberEats, have been receiving some criticism over the last few days for the 35% fee they charge to restaurants, and the fact that they aren’t willing to reduce it in light of the current situation. Danny says he understands where the criticism is coming from and that he feels it’s deserved. He wants to make it clear to his customers and the community that this is not how Food On Q operates. “We don’t charge 35% and never will, and we have lowered our fees to offer assistance. What they charge is extortionate. We’ve always been passionate about ensuring that our business works for everyone involved. If one of the parties involved is losing, then the whole process breaks down, which is what we’re seeing now with UberEats” He goes on to say “All businesses have their sweet spot in terms of the costs they need to charge to be able to provide the service they do, but there is a difference between that and ripping people off. I want to make it clear to our community that we are a local business ourselves, supporting other local businesses. I hope we don’t fall into the same category in people’s minds as UberEats.”

Food On Q will be opening again next Tuesday the 28th of April, at 5pm. They will have around 60-65% of their business partners available to order, and will be doing everything they can to provide the service they have built themselves on, at the same time as adhering to the government guidelines.

THE GOLDEN RULES OF FOOD STORAGE How you store your food has a huge impact on how long it lasts.

You may not think twice about where you put your food when you unpack your groceries, but there are small habits that we all do, such as putting bananas in our fruit bowl, which could be causing our food to go off faster than it should be.

These are Love Food Hate Waste’s golden rules of food storage to make your food last as long as possible:

Store your bread in the freezer Bread is the most wasted food in New Zealand, with Kiwis throwing out 20 million loaves a year. Our humid climate means that bread doesn’t last in the pantry. Frozen bread can go straight into the toaster for breakfast, and if you use it for sandwiches it would have defrosted by lunchtime.

Freeze your meat before its use by date Unless you are going to eat your meat within two days of buying it, you should always put it in the freezer. Not only will this ensure that it stays fresh, it also means that it will be safe to eat after the use by date has passed.

Bananas don’t belong in fruit bowls The fruit bowl is the worst place for a banana to be. Ethylene gas, released by foods such as apples and pears, causes bananas to ripen faster. Once bananas are ripe they produce ethylene gas, which ripens other fruit. It’s best to keep your bananas out-of-the-fridge and away from other fruits.

Keep cheese tightly wrapped The best way to store a large block of cheese, so it doesn’t grow mould or dry out, is to wrap the block tightly in its original packaging and place it in a cloth cheese bag in the fridge. If you don’t have a cheese bag, then wrap the original packaging around the block as tightly as possible, then wrap it in cling wrap or a plastic bag.

Keep potatoes and onions separate It may be convenient to store them in the same place as they both need to be in cool, dry, dark places, but potatoes and onions should be kept away from each other. When they’re kept together they release moisture which makes them both sprout faster. Unwashed potatoes can last to up to three times longer than washed potatoes.

Store vegetables the right way For many vegetables, storing them uncovered in the fridge means they will go off faster. We conducted research with the University of Otago to work out the best way to store your vegetables to keep them fresher for longer.

Standing still Photographer, Vaughan Brookfield, has been a popular pick among the film and advertising clique in Queenstown. Taking stills of serene, wide, nature scapes with a product perfectly placed in the frame. Catching the natural light and exposing a persons aurora in a portrait. Trudging up mountainous ranges to capture the vast openness in an action shot.

His projects, often align with his mantra, lifestyle and nature.

You’d think a photographer could still operate amongst this global pandemic. Keeping distant and zooming in. But the bulk of contracts are international, employing a dozen local foot soldiers and jumping through the many loops of management to get the approved winning shot.

For the moment, Vaughan Brookfield is at a stand-still as the advertising industry is put on pause.

Being in forced isolation, ultimately, forces one to reflect. Vaughan opens up in a written account and provides a black and white photo essay of the internal moments in isolation.

Lockdown – more challenging than I had imagined it would be, to be honest.

For someone who likes to spend most of their time outdoors and in the wilderness, it has been an interesting month to be stuck in my own neighbourhood, inside much of the time. Profiled in this photo essay is my 13 month old daughter, Hazel. Playing in the curtains. She is my full-time job right now with education facilities closed. It has been really special spending so much time with her, but as I am sure all parents out there know, it is no walk in the park keeping them entertained.

One of the unforeseen aspects of this pandemic is that it has given us the chance to stop, reflect, and reset. We don’t have the option to just keep working. With all of my upcoming work on hold, I have had space for my mind to wander and think creatively without a brief at hand. It has been really refreshing and gets me excited to get back to producing creative personal works again.

Lockdown over the World

Rome, Italy Since March 9th Italy has been in quarantine. After the first confirmed case of Covid-19 in the north of the country, the number of infected people has risen quickly. There are almost 190,000 cases now. In the beginning, the government was a bit reluctant to adopt measures to contain the spread of the virus, in fear it would stop the economy. However, they soon realised it was the best thing to do. The northern region was the most affected with the virus, with the collapse of the health system.

Rome, the capital of the country and a tourist mecca. Thousands of people visit the “Eternal City” every year. During this pandemic time, the streets are pretty much empty, with only a few people circulating, due to the social isolation recommended by OMS. It very clear that the sound and visual pollution has reduced, with less cars on the streets: we can even hear the birds singing, seems like the sky is bluer and the vegetation greener with more flowers.

Each person reacts in a different way to our Covid-19 situation, but there are few common ones. Just after the rise of the confirmed cases and number of deaths, you could sense the fear amongst the population: people didn’t know what would happen and when this would stop.

There was a nation coming together and determination to stop the virus, support to the people on the front line fighting the virus (nurses, doctors), and a lot of solidarity gestures with the ill and their relatives. Another beautiful aspect we could observe was how people would communicate and entertain other from their buildings and internet, with songs and presentations. The government straight away offered mental health support for whoever needed it.

Based on what we are seeing, the worse part of spread in Italy is gone. Now they are considering the second phase, slowly opening some industries and businesses, trying to keep the social distance.

The next steps would depend on the reduction of the spread of Covid-19 and

it’s hard to make any prediction. People are looking forward to return to their normal lives, to meet with each other, hug each other. However, there is the conscience that this return can’t be so rushed, to avoid the spread to grow again.

Internet and other social media are being, for many, big allies during this pandemic. Personally, I’m following some courses about Philosophy, and trying to learn new languages. Many schools and universities have employed this method of teaching. I’m fine and very busy with my studies. I use my free time to exercise, watch movies and other things. I never had any spare time before the pandemic. I try to follow, as much as possible, all recommendations from the health system, with the hope this situation will soon vanish and we can get back to normal, stronger and a little bit more human to each other.

Nice, France “We have been in lockdown since March 17, my husband, son and I. To be completely honest we are finding it tough, really tough! Very strict.

Life in an apartment is hard. Spring is here and we can’t be outside enjoying it.

The kids miss school and all their friends as do I. It is extremely hard to become motivated.

No outside at all except food shopping alone with masks and gloves. Isolated.

Miss my friends. Miss exercise. Miss nature.

relies on the people to make good judgment – stay home if you have cold symptoms, practice social distancing.

On the other hand, the economy and workforce is already taking a huge hit especially the likes of the service industry such as restaurants [3], bars and of course aviation. The major result is that a lot of people have been temporarily laid off (but note, this is not the same as being fired) with our national airline Scandinavian Airlines temporarily ceasing nearly all operations and laying off 90% of their staff [4] – it’s a tough time for many. My fiance is working at the hospital, and so far there is no sign of layoffs at my company so we have not been affected at this stage financially by the crisis.

Skåne, Sweden There is no doubt that Sweden, like the rest of the world, is impacted by COVID-19. Watching the news and hearing/reading updates from friends and family, it seems that we have several magnitudes more freedom than many countries, and as selfish as it sounds, at times one can even forget that the world is in the midst of a pandemic.

Let me be clear, Sweden is affected and people are dying of COVID-19. At the time of writing there are over 1500 deaths [1] in Sweden. While this may seem limited compared to the likes of Italy, is still significantly more than our Nordic neighbors and over 1500 more than NZ. COVID-19 dominates the media here, and every news broadcast is predominately focused on this, which is of course to be expected. Stockholm has significantly more infections at this stage, but our experts say we can expect a steep incline in the south in May, with the peak in June [2].

Many other countries see Sweden’s “hands-off” approach as fairly unique, others call it an experiment that gambles with peoples lives… The approach

The government relies heavily on our experts at Folkhälsomyndigheten (the organization which can be likened to the Ministry of Health in NZ). Their predictions/recommendations are all over the show and often not consistent with what they have said previously – but, to be fair, no-one really knows the best course of action. Initially the government imposed a restriction on crowd sizes which could be no more than

The requirement to take a “karensdag” (your first day of your sickness leave is normally docked) has been relaxed under Carona times [7] and the government is offering financial aide to small and large businesses [8].

Europe’s borders are porous, and containing the spread of the virus has not been easy. I do admire the approach Jacinda has taken in closing NZ’s borders, enforcing a lockdown and protecting the citizens. I feel more could have been done here to limit the spread and time will tell which approach was best, and at what cost. At the same time, it’s nice that life has not come to a complete stop.

• That it formed an arrow shaped delta where it merges with the Kawarau River and this would indicate to miners that they were at the right river.

It is actually most likely named after the Arrow River in Wales.

The Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown was founded in 1948. The museum holds a huge repository of objects, photographs, papers, books and interviews relating to our history. It also has an attached public art space, a bookshop and research facility. The museum has for many years run a full time education programme and runs the rro to ost ffice. he se is a charita le tr st rel i lar el on its door charge and sales to survive.

The ongoing future of this district institution is seriously threatened due to the need to earthquake strengthen its heritage buildings and the impact of Covid 19.

Even though we have all been in lockdown, one salvation has been our ability to get out and exercise in our beautiful environment. The autumn weather has been sensational and even as it turns cold you can rug up and enjoy the pure crisp air. The silence, punctuated by the rolific ati e ir so has a e to the e erie ce.

There is often discussion about the origin of the names for Queenstown and Kingston. Kingston was a very important train terminus/ port town from the 1860’s until the 1930’s when a road was built around the lake edge. It was originally called St Johns after St oh ra i a the first local olice o issio er. he for a hile it as a e eor eto til it as fi all a e i sto rish miners, after Kingston (now Dún Laoghaire in Ireland).

The River Arrow (Welsh: Afon Arwy) is a river in the Welsh Marshes, risi i o s i ales the o i i to the lish co t of Herefordshire.

William Rees was originally from Wales and named various local features after British landmarks.

The original name of Arrowtown was Fox’s after one of the original gold discoverers. Circa 1865 the town was known as The Arrow, Arrow River or Arrow Township. By 1866 the names were combined and it became known as Arrowtown.

In Te Reo, the Arrow River is known as Haehae-nui (which means big scratches he area of the to shi a the o e at la aro it is known as Kamuriwai which means a ‘large number of streams end here’.

When you get down to the Kawarau River (meaning ‘many shrubs’ in Maori) you can go on the Queenstown trail network in two directions.

One way is towards the Kawarau Suspension Bridge (built 1880), the home of the original commercial Bungy jump in New Zealand and the other is to ar s the co e ce of the hoto er i er. ea i to the Bungy bridge you look across to the beautiful vineyards of Chard Farm. This land has always been productive and early settler Richard Chard realised the miners needed food. Until 1978 it was farmed by generations of the Chard family. The north facing, frost free land was excellent for a market garden, an orchard and a dairy. Rob and Greg Hay started the vineyard on the land in 1987.

William Rees called his humble home and sheds in Queenstown Bay ‘The Station’, but the early miners called it ‘The Camp’. At a public meeting held in January 1863, convened for the purpose of giving the town a name, Queenstown was chosen. Some believe it as calle this as it as a to fit for a ee t it is ore li el named after Queenstown (now Cobh) in Ireland. The fact that these t o to s ere a e after rish la ar s re ects the lar e number of Irish miners.

One of my favorite trails in Arrowtown is the Arrowtown Millennium Trail which forms a walking/cycle loop leaving from behind Arrowtowns main street. It was built in 1998 by the Otago Regional Council in conjunction with the QLDC and provides a lovely brisk walk which follows the river. There are trails along the whole length of the Arrow River from Macetown at the headwaters (named after the Mace Brothers who mined gold here) to where it empties into the larger Kawarau River.

The Chard Road that services the farm is not for the faint hearted and is a great piece of engineering. It was built in 1866 to replace the much more treacherous Gentle Annie track that was on the north side of the river. Until the suspension bridge was built, you would travel down the Chard Road until you reached the Morven Ferry, also know as Owens’ Ferry. Richard Owen was a gold miner turned excellent ferryman. He needed to be to work against the might of the Kawarau river, especially he it as i oo . here are still r i s of the ol e s otel at the bottom of Morven Ferry Road. The ferry carried people, goods and vehicles across the mighty Kawarau River from 1866 to 1880 and was put out of business when the suspension bridge was built further downstream.

Over the years the land around Chard Farm and Owens Ferry has revealed many moa bones and Maori artefacts. The junction of the Kawarau and Shotover Rivers was known by Maori as Puahuru (Meaning to warmth or heat). There was a Maori settlement there called Tititea (which is also the name for Mt Aspiring). Maori knew the Shotover River as Kimiakau (which means ‘looking for the sea coast’. his refers to aori e lorers follo i the ri er alle to tr a fi a way through to the West Coast). The European explorers originally called the river ‘The Tummel’ before Rees called it the Shotover River after Shotover Park in England, which was the home of his business partner George Gammie.
