In the door The world sneezes and Queenstown gets a nasty virus. Where the COVID-19 Pandemic goes from here is anyone’s guess. Obviously, nothing is more important than good health and we will all be paying particularly close attention to that. Fingers crossed one case of COVID-19 in Queenstown does not turn into more. Economically however, it’s a whole new kettle of fish. From employee to employer, small business to large corporation, it’s a worrying situation. Running a business has never been easy. Admittedly at times it seems easy, but it never is, especially when the “situation” is so far out of your control it’s akin to aliens landing. Queenstown has literally been turned on its head. For the foreseeable future we are an international tourism destination no more. Is there a silver lining? You would have to stretch the bow far back to find one, but yes there kind of is. Timing is everything and at least we are at the tail end of the summer season. April, May and June are not generally mission critical months for most businesses in town. The anti-growth crusaders may even be celebrating as sick as that sounds. I did not hear the 7am jet from Auckland this morning. Maybe it was cancelled along with numerous other flights in and out of ZQN. If you are one of those old school locals who wish for Queenstown to be “the way it was in 1984”, congratulations your wish is granted. At least in the short term our traffic congestion problems are solved, our dangerous foreign drivers are gone, replaced with tumble weeds rolling down Shotover Street. Hope of lessoning the blow now lays firmly at the feet of us, the locals. If we go into lock down our local businesses will suffer all the more. It might actually be quite nice to have the place to ourselves. One thing you can be absolutely sure of is your custom at a local restaurant, bar, attraction or activity will be extremely well received. If we do not support ourselves there is a very good chance this COVID-19 situation will put hundreds out of work and tip dozens of businesses over the edge. Local customers are for now back in their rightful place at the top of the appreciation tree. As alien as it might seem, this is not the first time the world has gone into panic mode and time will tell if that panic is really justified. Regardless, the hardest part to get your head around is nobody knows how deep and how long the COVID-19 economic cut will be. Uncertainty is business confidence’s worst nightmare. In the last 15 years we have had swine flu, bird flu, volcanic ash clouds and global recession. That’s life, the smart money plans for such things. Easier said than done. News Round Up A weekly summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Queenstown prepares for coronavirus economic catastrophe As the world introduces war time measures to fight the spread of caronavirus, Queenstown is bracing itself for major social and economic impacts.

US Study Trip postponed A $30k two-week trip to the US for Queenstown’s mayor and its council boss, which included a visit to a futuristic transport company, has been postponed due to the coronavirus.

From 1am on Monday morning all travelers will have to selfisolate for 14 days on their arrival into New Zealand.

Jim Boult and council CEO Mike Theelen hoped to visit San Francisco, South Tahoe City, Denver, Aspen, Portland in the US, and Canadian ski resorts Banff and Whistler this May.

This will effectively end international tourism to the region for the foreseeable future- leading to job losses and uncertainty for thousands of families reliant on the tourism industry,

They were due to seek approval from councillors on Thursday for the study trip, which aimed to investigate solutions to the resort’s housing affordability, transport and other issues.

The strict measures, the toughest in the world were announced yesterday by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and will be reviewed at the end of March.

But at Thursday’s council meeting, Boult said due to the virus outbreak it made sense to postpone.

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Anna Mickell told Queenstown Media Group on Friday that business was already responding to the drop off in tourism numbers. “I’ve spoken with the banks and they are already reporting a steady increase in enquiries from customers about making sure their businesses are in shape, they are also seeing businesses to start to reduce staff and operating costs” Mayor Jim Boult has called a meeting of senior council staff on Monday following the announcement and will meet the Minister of Economic Development to discuss support for the tourism industry. Meanwhile the Salvation Army is gearing up to support locals through self-isolation periods with food parcels and other support.

Queenstown has first confirmed coronavirus case A Danish woman has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus. The woman in her 30’s is the eighth person to test positive in New Zelanad and the first in the South Island. She arrived in Auckland from Doha on Tuesday March 10th before flying to Christchurch and then to Queenstown by rental van with her family. Its understood she felt un well when she arrived in Queenstown. She is being cared for and will recover in self isolation and be monitored daily by health services.

Warbirds over Wanaka is cancelled WoW announced late Sunday that this years event has been cancelled. The airshow was planned for over the Easter weekend and was expected to attract 55,000 people over the three days. Organisers have confirmed all tickets will be refunded in fill but have asked ticket holders to wait a few days while organisers confirm specifics about how people will be able to access refunds.

’High level of engagement’ in airport impact survey Almost 4,500 people completed a survey on the impact of Queenstown and Wanaka Airports on the community. Consultants MartinJenkins were commissioned by Queenstown Lakes District Council to produce an independent social, economic and environmental impact report about the airports after community unrest over plans for growth. Over the past few weeks, MartinJenkins experts have been engaging with the community to understand the various perspectives on future airport development, though focus groups and an online survey. “Many of the respondents took the time to provide extensive comments on the potential impacts of future airport development and the four hypothetical scenarios” a MartinJenkins spokesperson said. “We appreciate the high level of engagement from the community and thank all of those who participated. We will analysing these responses in the coming weeks to inform our assessment of the social, economic and environmental impacts of future airport development scenarios.” As a measure of engagement, some 11,522 people voted in October’s local body election, a turnout of return of 49.05%, excluding special votes. Last month, MartinJenkins held seven focus groups, attended by representatives from more than 50 groups, including representing schools, health care providers, ethnic and religious groups, commercial and business groups, youth groups, community associations, central government, tourism operators, property developers, airport user groups and advocacy groups. “While some groups expressed reservations about the process, attendees participated constructively and gave us in-depth feedback.” Queenstown Airport Corporation wants to expand the noise boundaries at Queenstown aerodrome, to allow more flights, and develop Wanaka Airport for commercial jets.

Ladies Mile masterplan

Rhino’s takes a hit

Queenstown councillors last Thursday rolled the dice on a $1.4 million masterplan process for communities east of the Shotover River.

Queenstown bar Rhino’s Ski Shack has been ordered to close for 48 hours after serving an underage teen who later assaulted someone.

Its goal is to unlock land on both sides of Ladies Mile, from the Shotover Bridge to Lake Hayes, for potentially more than 1000 homes, community facilities for everyone in the area, a primary school and possibly a new Queenstown high school.

The downtown basement bar, between The Mall and Cow Lane, shut last Wednesday and Thursday, March 18 and 19.

Crucially, it also aims to revolutionise the transport options for new residents, existing residents in Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate, and those who use the super busy road as a way into Frankton and Queenstown itself. Councillors last year rejected applications from landowners to create three special housing areas in Ladies Mile, totalling 514 homes, mainly due to its ongoing traffic problems, caused by the sheer volume of cars and the pinch-point of the Shotover River road bridge. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) also spent $13.8 million on a prominent 14.6 hectare strip of land, to secure it for a possible bus interchange, park-and-ride, schools and/or community buildings. The 30-year masterplan could be ready and approved by the end of March 2021 - just a year away But it is not without its risks. Arrowtown-based consultants Rationale prepared the preliminary report and identify eight problems for council has they attempt to run parallel masterplan and plan change processes. These include that QLDC is under resourced and there might not be external specialists available. There’s also no budget, as yet, set aside for the process, and the timelines might not be achievable, leading to a backlash from the landowners. Another risk is that the various work streams would not be coordinated - such as the transport infrastructure through NZTA via Wakatipu Way 2 Go coming before building.

AUTUMN REVIVER

The 17-year-old boy assaulted someone on Cow Lane on Friday, November 29, last year. The bar opens 8pm to 3am. Queenstown Sergeant Christopher Brooks applied to the New Zealand Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority for the suspension following the incident. Future Bars, which owns Rhino’s, did not dispute the grounds and the suspension was issued by District Court Judge K D Kelly in Wellington on February 21. Brooks, however, says despite the application, Future Bars is actually one of the most responsible operators in town. “We have a great relationship with these guys, we’re all on the same page about trying to reduce harm in the community, such as any assaults in the CBD. “In this case, the youth involved in the assault had been served and become intoxicated, and we were able to connect it back to the bar. The bar was cooperative in our enquiries.” Future Bars general manager Bert Haines says the offence was black and white, so the suspension was expected and accepted. “I was actually in the venue 20 minutes before the offence occurred and it was being managed well. “But unfortunately as we were swapping over doormen a minor has managed to enter and then gain service from one of our bar staff. “It’s completely unacceptable. We know that and we train for it extensively but one has managed to slip through the cracks. “For us, it’s something to learn from, to put into our training programmes, and we’ll do everything we can to prevent it happening again.”

Well there you have it. Game over. Do we give the trophy to the Sharks? They lead on 24 points and given the tight schedule the game follows over the course of the year it is unlikely we will get a completed Super Rugby season in 2020.

1st

75%

Either way, it is time to reflect on the first 7 rounds. If the semi finals where held tomorrow, the finalists would be the Sharks and Stormers from South Africa, the Crusaders, and the fourth? That’s a hard one. 2 weeks ago, the smart money would be on the Blues pushing for the last top 4 spot. Then the Hurricanes turn around a shocker against the Blues and beat the Chiefs looking good doing it. It’s a 3-way ding dong between the Blues, Chiefs or Hurricanes. Go Hurricanes on track record over the past 5 years. We can discount the Highlanders, all the Aussie sides and the rest of the Africans. They have all looked rubbish and are just making up numbers and throwing in the odd curve ball to keep things slightly interesting. But truth be told the writing is already on the Trophy regardless if the last game of the season is already played, or a few rounds do get played post Corona Virus apocalypse in July. And the name etched in, if they can stay top qualify and play the final at home in Africa, is the Sharks.

Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting Public Forum on 12th March 2020

Missed the last Queenstown Lakes District Council Community Voice session? Here’s what you need to know:

Bed Tax Honouring Merv Aoake

Wanaka was well-represented at the meeting and among those who’d travelled over the hill to attend was motel operator Peter Sutherland. He voiced his concerns that council reports regarding the bed tax had been withheld, apparently to protect names or commercially sensitive details. Information had been deliberately delayed and withheld, he said, and he asked that the council report more clearly on what could be done regarding the bed tax.

The meeting began by honouring Merv Aoake, who died after a short battle with cancer on Sunday 8th March. Mayor Boult praised his legacy – both his work in promoting and furthering rugby, and working with Jigsaw Central Lakes.

Climate change action and diversification

“He was a contributor of the highest calibre,” said Mayor Boult.

The day before the meeting, QLDC sent out a press release saying that councillors would be asked to adopt a ‘Climate Action Plan’ at the meeting. The plan is geared towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“Many have said that he was a bloke that if something needed done, he’d get on and do it.”

Wanaka-based Ben Acland, who’s behind clothing brand Mons Royale, told of his company’s dedication to sustainable practices and said that council needs to push for a “resilient and diverse economy” – he pointed to global events as evidence that tourism couldn’t be relied upon to support the economy forever.

Cory Ratahi led a short prayer, which was followed by a moment’s silence.

Monique Kelly, co-founder of charitable trust One New Zealand, also came from Wanaka to talk about diversification of the economy and reminded council of some of the startling figures on climate change. Speaking on the urgency of action needed, she said “We can’t have our cake and eat it […] it’s not about what we want to do, it’s what we can do.”

We wish anyone who knew Merv all the best at this sad time. Sending love and strength your way...

Darryl Rogers has taken a quirky approach to council meetings before – in November, he read a poem and at last week’s meeting, he started by announcing himself as the region’s biggest employer. As councillors and public alike were scratching their heads, Darryl boasted about how well his staff were looked after – mostly female, they had purpose-built, off-thegrid worker accommodation in some of the best places in the region. It soon emerged that Darryl is a beekeeper and was talking about his wellkept bees. He advocated for better protection of the environment, warned against habitat loss and joined the others in saying that the economy should be diversified.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

CBD

Lakes District Museum by Jane Peasey Projects Manager

by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Some weeks you get the big slap in the face feeling that you have no control over anything that happens - this is very tough when you’re a control freak like me. It’s tough on everyone else too - we all knew the big crash was coming but noone knew when. Now we know! And noone knew coronavirus would turn up - even the eternally brilliant Donald Trump had got rid of his pandemic team... now everyone is wondering if New Zealand’s own borders are going to close. What sort of Wakatipu will be living in if we are all home all winter? If no visitors come from overseas? It might be rather nice - we’ll have a chance to be a community again and get to know ourselves better. I just had my first post-cancer check up with the surgeon and got the all clear. I celebrated it with two other old friends who did the breast cancer thing before me - we have only one boob between the three of us, and we all agreed the best thing about having had cancer is learning what’s really important in life (not boobs!) - it’s all about being in a group who care deeply about each other, be they family or friends and neighbours. Nothing else matters. One of us was having her 60th in Christchurch and her father died two nights before the party. In her own indomitable way, she carried on organising the party for Thursday and the funeral for Tuesday. Life goes on and there’s simply no way of knowing what lies ahead - it’s never, ever boring, even if it is sad or scary sometimes. I’m writing this on the third flight I’ve taken just to get home from Christchurch with a box of monarch butterfly caterpillars for my mother’s swan plants. I wonder if they know they’re flying before they are meant to... The thick cloud over the basin had us turn back to Christchurch. The only way of getting home (according to Air NZ) was to fly via Auckland. There are six friends waiting at my house for me and the Auckland professor who is going to teach us the art of memoir writing, as by one of those mysterious flukes, she and I are now arriving on the same plane. People who like writing are the same people who like reading and I’m so excited to tell you that Anne O’Brien from the Auckland Writers Festival is speaking at the library in Gorge Road at 5.30 on Tuesday night (tonight!) Anyone who’s heard her will definitely be stampeding down there to listen to her rattle off at machinegun speed the list of books we are all going to want to read.

I’m looking out of my office window over Ramshaw Lane in Arrowtown. It’s another stunning early autumn morning and the coaches are already rolling into town. Before the shops are even open, the doors of the museum are open wide and we are ready for another day of welcoming visitors, giving directions, helping find lost wallets and lost husbands, entertaining tired babies, advising family researchers, and pointing out Lord of the Rings locations, walking trails, cycle trails, wineries… the list goes on. Speaking to people visiting our spectacular area every day certainly makes me appreciate the special place that we live in. I’m often asked by tourists “what it is like to LIVE here?” and I find it a bit hard to explain. The sense of community and friendship that I have found here has been unlike anywhere else I have ever lived. On top of that, I get to work in an incredible communitycentred museum, surrounded by people who are passionate about what they do and, in the case of our director David Clarke in particular, have spent decades preserving our stories. The Lakes District Museum is so much more than simply a museum. We house our district’s archives: over 600 hours of oral histories, thousands of precious artefacts, over 20,000 photos, as well as documents and records that are our district’s taonga. We run an incredibly popular education programme that welcomes over 3,500 students every year (I’m sure many long-time locals will remember their first encounter with the terrifying Miss Grey!). We run a gallery space that has exhibitions showcasing local artists. We are the lost and found office, a meeting space for community groups, an information centre for tourists and locals, we’re ticket sellers and we’re often providers of a quiet space for those who just need a glass of water and a wee break from the heat outside. We have been protecting and preserving our stories since 1948 and our institution is now under threat. We need to complete seismic strengthening and restoration on the 1875 BNZ building and stables that houses some of our collection. At least $3.5 million is needed which is daunting to say the least! We are a Charitable Trust and operate thanks to grants, admission fees, retail sales and bequests. Many people think we are a council-run museum, but we are not. We receive a contribution from the QLDC each year to assist with operating costs, for which we are very grateful. At a time of such rapid growth and change in our area, we are proud to be preserving the past. Once those records are gone, they are gone for good. If we are forced to close, we don’t know where our taonga will end up. Please, if you can spare a few dollars, visit our Give a Little page. Every dollar helps us towards our success.

Water Ferry should go back to Water Taxi

I was delighted to see that the QLD Council, ORC and others decided to subsidise our ferry services, which otherwise would have ceased on February 29th. It was my understanding that in return for the subsidy, our ferry services would become more reliable, more frequent and stop at more jetties between the Hilton and Queenstown Bay. Sadly, we have seen little change or even an announcement of plans for this to occur. On March 9, we took the ferry from Bay View to Queenstown at 5.24pm to enjoy dinner in town with friends. We returned to Queenstown Bay around 8.40pm, only to find that the scheduled 8.45pm ferry was full and leaving us and another 7 souls stranded. When we asked whether another ferry would be launched, we were informed by the ferry driver, that there was no other ferry master on duty or on call this evening. When requesting her whether she would come back for a second trip after having dropped off the first load of passengers, the answer was again no, but that we could all wait an hour until the next, and last ferry service of the evening, at 9.45pm – I believe we all left in search of other means of transport, rather than waiting a full hour

in deteriorating weather conditions. When the issue of capacity of our ferry services has been raised previously, the excuse has been that it was weekends, peak season, school holidays and/or a special event and that a second ferry would be utilised or an additional trip made – this was on a Monday and in the shoulder season? For the ferry service to succeed, it MUST be reliable, and this capacity issue must be resolved - either by bigger boats or by more frequent services when required. It should be a no-brainer that the ferry service should visit more jetties along its way from the Hilton to Queenstown Bay – as a minimum at the new Marina at Sugar Lane, The Rees and the Golf Club*, and preferably every hour, including the present mid-afternoon and “dinner” service breaks. The Ferry Service started out as a Taxi service i.e. on request, and still operates like that – perhaps we should go back to “booking” a stop on a serviced run, eliminating the need to stop at jetties without a booking, and resolving the capacity issue by the operators knowing exactly how many passengers to cater for?

*You forgot Loop Road.

Hi, you’ve got mail missing Courier post and NZ posts delivery service is beyond any words can describe. I have suffered through Fernhill fiasco about 10 years ago where I complained for 6+ months before they figured out The problem with their delivery person throwing away the mail. Now in LHE I am having randomly missing mail or delivery late or even had a imaginary parcel from AKL which the shipper forgot to send but Courier post had me track and said they delivered... I have had XMAS mail delivered after 7 weeks from the USA - their excuse they don’t control overseas mail. Ok, how about a local hospital appointment letter from Queenstown and ANZ bank statements never delivered?

Poll Question

As we see the town growing and the center has moved to Frankton. While we have a post office in a pharmacy which is hard to get to and parking problems. How about moving the branch to a shopping area with plenty of parking and easy to get in and out. I know this franchise is owned by the same owner who owns a pharmacy so we the public have to put up with this. Try getting in and out of that pharmacy parking area... Wish there was a major competition to NZ POST for local mail and small parcels. Your mail will get delivered eventually from Tom Hanks #castawayreference

Monthly Column Hamish Walker MP for Clutha-Southland

Celebrate the reopening of Alpine Aqualand with pool entry and hydroslides for the whole family!

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March 10.30am - 4.00pm Our local tourism sector is incurring various challenges at present with Coronavirus causing many visitors to put their holidays on hold. This accompanied with the damage to Milford Road and walking tracks in the area means our tourism industry in the south is taking huge hits. It is evident the number of tourists visiting our area has dropped this summer period. Some hotels are reporting a 30% drop in numbers for February compared to last year, and others have informed me they have had large cancellations of bookings which were scheduled for the next few months. Some adventure business operators are reporting a drop of up to 50%. The implications in the lack of visitors from China, is especially hard-hitting in Queenstown. Chinese visitors make up over 10% of New Zealand’s visitors, so minimal visitors arriving from China is having a large impact on our economy. We’re lucky to have some fantastic tourism providers still attracting other international visitors here. Destination Queenstown is also doing an incredible job spreading the word that we are still open for business and especially getting our friends across the ditch here, to the south.

It does, however, create a very difficult situation for tourism employers and employees. Businesses are having to let staff go due to the shortage of tourists, mainly in Milford Sound, but also some in Te Anau and Queenstown. This is an incredibly stressful and uncertain time for a lot of people in the tourism sector. I hosted a public meeting on the Milford Road in Te Anau earlier this month to allow people to hear from various stakeholders about how the repairs are progressing. It’s fantastic to see the convoys operational but we need to do all we can to get the road back open and operating as normal as soon as we can.

It hasn’t been an easy start to the year for the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) either, with the Government passing its tertiary reforms which will have serious implications for us in the deep south. We’re incredibly lucky to have our Queenstown campus, which offers many courses which are attractive to those in the tourism sector. However, those wanting to study at the campus and those who work at the campus, and SIT throughout the south now face uncertainty about what next for them. The Education Minister’s own officials told him these reforms would not work but this has been completely ignored as this Government pushes on with its agenda. A National Government will return assets to SIT where they are still available and return decision making back to those in the regions who know their people best.

We work with the Year 7 and 8’s across seven primary schools, plus all year levels in Wakatipu High School, and are continuing to build valuable relationships with youth, their families, whanau and staff as a result. Recently Wakatipu Youth Trust has moved to the Red Oaks complex in Frankton we have officially opened our new youth centre – ‘The Loft’. This provides a wonderful central hub from which we can run our vast range of programmes and support services to the community. These services include things such as the high school ‘drop in’, year 7 & 8 late night activities, holiday programmes, and mentoring services. There are a number of challenges that arise in the youth community as a result of wider economic and social factors and we take pride in offering assistance to schools and social services in dealing with some of these concerns, and are increasingly being recognised as a community resource that can support other agencies with creating a multi-faceted, strengths-based approach to assisting youth with different situations. We have also had an increase in referrals to our agency for mentoring with a wide array of needs being met by our youth workers through working one to one with an individual youth. Other initiatives that Wakatipu Youth Trust are involved in delivering is the ‘Love Me Not’ programme to those in Year 12, in conjunction with NZ Police. Along with this we have also been able to provide ‘Mental health and Wellbeing’ with some of the large organisations in Queenstown, allowing them to support their workforce. These workshops have had a Queenstown focus and covered Youth, Mental health, Alcohol and Drugs, Relationship Violence, Sex and consent and Support Services. Our highly motivated, passionate and hard-working team use our collective strengths to ensure youth throughout the Wakatipu are having their developmental needs met, This has resulted in a successful combination of well-developed opportunities and initiatives that increases our presence and accessibility for youth, their family, whanau and our wider community.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK What’s your role? I’m an artist and I love making music, I get to do what I love. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? I got to Queenstown in 1999 and it was 100% because Queenstown is so beautiful. We went to visit and decided to move there that day! Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? I love the Mt Crichton loop track! It’s on the way to Glenorchy and it’s a magical walk with beautiful views and native bush. What’s your favourite place to eat? Taco Medic! Best Tacos in the whole world. For dining in I like…. Mrs Ferg Ice cream… not really dine in but in the winter I’ll often eat sitting under the heater on the bench outside! What has been your best/worst date? Best date would be my last birthday when I was tramping on the Hollyford Track. We went swimming with Hector dolphins and got to hang out in nature all day... Worst date would be when I was at high school I went to my boyfriends house and put dreads in his mullet while he played Call of Duty! Wasn’t so bad though he made me nachos after. What’s on your bucket list? Learn a language! I’m learning Italian... Sto imparando l’italiano! È difficile...

Molly Devine Best QT memory? On Wakatipu High School’s Yr 10 school camp, (Called Branches) tramping to Lochnagar with my best buddy! We had to climb a massive mountain and got our legs sliced up by cutting grass then we all had to jump in a 2 degree lake... But it was AMAZING! I would so love to do that again sometime. Worst QT memory? I lived on a farm and was woken up by a massive bush fire coming towards our house... We got evacuated and put the whole family in the car with the dog, the cat, and three pet lambs and raced off to Glenorchy. When we woke up the next day we heard the wind had changed just at the right time but we still lost a lot of beautiful native bush. Who is your inspiration? I am inspired by nature mostly... I feel there are endless lessons to learn just watching nature. And Beyoncé... What is the best bad decision you ever made? Buying a box of gluten free vegan trumpets when they first came out and eating all four of them in three hours. I’ve only done it twice since then... What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? Having full convos with my dog about how his day is going...

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

WHAT’S NEW on the app?

Fairway to Heaven! by Paul Child, Tournament Director Queenstown in your pocket

Life & Style Read about the Kiwi leading the nation’s Plant Base industry.

Breakfast review from Good Grub: Nest Kitchen and Bar at Kamana Lakehouse.

If you’ve lived in Queenstown more than a single day, no doubt you’ve observed the steady flow of townsfolk wandering in the direction of the Queenstown Gardens, frisbees in hand and grins upon lips. Where they’re going - or where they’ve come from - is the Queenstown Disc Golf course located in the Gardens, to participate in one of the greatest leisure activities known to man.

Disc Golf follows all the same principles and basic rules used in ball golf. At its core, it involves casting frisbees known as ‘discs’ along a designated fairway and ultimately into the chains of a raised metal basket. Free to play, requiring nothing but a disc and pleasant attitude, disc golf has won the hearts of millions around the world. It is one of the most rapidly progressing sports in the world, and is a pastime now embraced by more than 30,000 kiwis across NZ. Is it any wonder, then, that the Queenstown Disc Golf course is the holy grail of New Zealand disc golf? Home to New Zealand’s first - and most iconic - permanent course, the Queenstown Gardens has views like no other. First installed in 1996, The Queenstown Gardens has seen more than one million players taking on the legendary course, pitting themselves against the perils of the pines whilst soaking their eyeballs with the majesty of the background vistas.

Akona te reo, kōrerotia te reo! Cory Ratahi, the teacher of Te Reo.

So what better place than the Queenstown Gardens for New Zealand’s greatest Disc Golf Event? On the 21st and 22nd of March, the 25th Annual Queenstown Classic Disc Golf tournament will be taking place within the Queenstown Gardens. Proudly sponsored for 23 years by The Helicopter Line and graciously supported by the Queenstown Council, this event is the longest running and most prestigious disc golf tournament on the NZ DG tour. And this year it’s going to be a big one! Featuring a bounty of amazing prizes from local sponsors, an augmented course, clinics, games, stalls, and disc golf battles between New Zealand’s top players, this event is a must for competitors and spectators alike! If you want to know what all the hype is about, come down and check it out! See you on the course!

Arts+Culture Cello Meets Voice What’s better than listening to a cello play? Listening to more cellos, says Cellists of Otago’s Heleen Du Plessis. The University of Otago cello teacher and coach is looking forward to bringing her very special ‘cello choir’ to Arrowtown for the very first time on 25th March at the Athenaeum Hall. Comprising of eight cellos – both students at the University of Otago and members of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, the Cellists of Otago will blend their sounds with internationally acclaimed Kiwi soprano Rebecca Ryan. The group is one of Heleen’s projects that aims to connect people; “A lot of my projects are about connecting people, connecting place and connecting people from different backgrounds whether that’s socioeconomic or ethnic. I believe the cello has the ability to communicate and bring people together.” Heleen grew up in a musical family. Both her parents conducted orchestras and Heleen was always fascinated by the cellos. “We grew up in and around choir rehearsals and orchestra rehearsals – so I was exposed to the whole orchestra at a very young age. I always just looked at and listened to the cellos and I’d go to their section rehearsals. And I never thought to be anything else – I had a clear idea from a very young age that I would be a cello teacher.” At the age of six, Heleen asked to learn to play the cello. But her father, a violinist, insisted she tried a year playing the violin first.

“The cello can express a huge range of different emotions and colours – it can play really high and really low and it can be dramatic, romantic, and brilliant and angry – there’s just so many sounds you can make. It has a huge range because of the size and its structure – it gives you so many options. It’s way more physical – you have to really move because of the sound so your body and the way you sit, the cello becomes part of your body and for me it is my voice, I have four vocal chords!” She adds. Heleen has carefully curated music for the Arrowtown concert, selecting music which has rhythms and lyrical elements which will meld well with a cello choir and solo voice. “Rebecca Ryan is a well-known soloist in New Zealand and internationally. She has a huge range of colours in her voice and I’m looking forward to working with her, to blend our sound with hers.” There’ll be a huge variety of music played, which will suit a broad audience – not just those interested in classical music. The programme includes songs from famous operas and musicals, compositions by Lloyd Webber to Wagner as well as New Zealand composers, traditional and Māori music. Tickets for the 25th March ‘Cello Meets Voice’ concert cost $55 (+ fees, ACAS members receive a $10 discount) and tickets are available via Eventfinda. The event starts at 6pm, but there’ll be complementary canapes and a cash bar from 5:15pm.

“I did my year and at the end of it, I was like: Can I play cello now?! […] Why would you play anything else, but cello?” She says, laughing.

Art News Kiwi shop wins international bookshop award New Zealand has its fair share of brilliant independent bookshops, but Unity Books in Auckland now has an international award to add to its shelves. The well-known independent book shop has been awarded the London Book Fair’s ‘Bookstore of the Year’ award – beating an international shortlist of 29 to be crowned the world’s best bookshop. Unity Books was founded in Wellington back in 1967 by Alan Preston. When store managers Nigel Fox (who died in 2006) and Jo McColl relocated to Auckland in 1989, they asked Preston if they could open a second store; despite there being a recession at the time, he agreed. McColl still runs the Auckland store that’s now located on High Street, in the CBD.
