Queenstown Trails Trust - Connecting our community 18 years ago, the Wakatipu (now Queenstown) Trails Trust was established after a bunch of community-minded people thought it would be good idea to create a network of recreational walking and cycle trails. It was these visionary people that saw growth on the horizon and wanted to secure public access and easements to key land before it was fully developed. It was good timing; shortly after, Prime Minister John Key announced a multi-million-dollar fund to create a national network of cycle trails as a mechanism to boost economic, social and environmental benefits to communities and Ngā Haerenga, the NZ Cycle Trail, was born. In 2012 we opened 130km of off-road trails, which have since been travelled by over two million walkers, hikers and bikers from Queenstown to Gibbston via Frankton, Arrowtown and Jack’s Point. Today, the Queenstown Trails Trust strives to make it easier for you to ride and walk in and around Queenstown. It’s our job to fundraise and establish more trails (and secure their maintenance) for the benefit of our community and for visitors to the region. We negotiate easements with landowners and advocate for access to this beautiful environment we call home. We have a vision to connect our community through trails and inspire adventures. Our goal is to have trails within ten minutes of every community in Queenstown. We’d like to encourage more people onto bikes for recreation and commuting, to ease traffic congestion with direct, safe routes. We want kids to cycle to school and for bikes to appeal more than cars to the next generation; we’re promoting a healthier, less stressful and more sustainable future for our town.

Our aspirations for 2020 are to have the proposed Arrowtown to Arthurs Point/Tucker Beach trail fully consented, ready for construction by next summer. In addition, the Way2Go collaboration will also begin improving connections with our current trails, as well as working on the design and construction for trails linking Jack’s Point to Frankton (2020/21) and Lake Hayes Estate to Frankton (2021/24). We’re also getting started on some epic projects now – final approvals for the Coronet Loop have been granted and work is underway on some new trails around Coronet which will blow your mind. The Bush Creek trail is also getting some love next month which we hope will improve the experience for everyone. At the Queenstown Trails Trust we are keen to develop more trails which traverse our incredible surroundings and we have big ideas in the pipeline, which we hope to share with you soon. In the meantime, get out there and enjoy our wonderful trails and if you like what we do, head over to our website and show your support by becoming a friend of the Trust from as a little as $25 per year – queenstowntrail.co.nz/getinvolved/become-a-friend. News Round Up A weekly summary of major local news stories by Paul Taylor Queenstown house prices double over decade
Routeburn to partially reopen to public
Queenstown house prices have almost doubled in the past decade, according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.
The Routeburn Track will partially reopen from the Glenorchy end on Thursday, March 12.
The median price in the Queenstown-Lakes district has risen 95.7% from $488,000 in 2010 to $955,000 in 2019. It’s now the second most expensive district in the country behind North Shore City.
Department of Conservation bosses announced Wednesday last week, a new walk, named Routeburn Return, will temporarily replace the Routeburn Great Walk, which is closed for the season due to storm damage.
REINZ released its top 10 list of median house prices rises ast week. REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell says: “We expected that the top 10 list would mostly contain areas that started from a low affordability base – as is the case for Mackenzie and Kawerau Districts, but it was interesting to see the Queenstown-Lakes District in the top 10 districts for median price growth, even though it started as the third most expensive district in 2010.” Queenstown has struggled with housing affordability and demand over recent years.
Queenstown’s biggest citizenship ceremony Some 99 people received their New Zealand citizenship at the Queenstown Lakes District’s largest-ever citizenship ceremony on Tuesday, March 3. The ceremony, which took place at Queenstown’s Memorial Centre, saw the new citizens enjoy performances by a local waiata group and the Queenstown Primary School choir.
The four-day, three-night return walk is longer and more challenging than the Great Walk, as walkers will now trek about two-thirds of the original track before turning around and heading back out the same way. The Routeburn Great Walk is traditionally a three-day trans-alpine trek between Glenorchy and the Divide/Milford Sound. DoC Southern South Island operations director Aaron Fleming says since the February 3 storms, DoC staff have worked hard to get tracks reopened as soon as possible. drawing on expert geotechnical advice. “We know people are really keen to get back into nature as quickly as possible, but for us, safety has to come first. We knew really early on that the track as a traditional cross-alpine Great Walk adventure could not be safely reopened in its entirety this season.” “Now we’ve completed assessments, made some necessary repairs, and are pleased to announce access from the Glenorchy end, through to Lake Mackenzie hut is now safe for people to return. Repairs have included flying in a replacement temporary bridge, fixing damaged bridges and track clearance.”
There were 24 different nationalities present including Estonia, Singapore, Italy, Japan, Thailand and India. The new citizens were provided with a celebratory afternoon tea in fitting kiwiana fashion: 250 lamingtons, 150 sausage rolls, dozens of kiwifruit and many pineapple lumps, jet planes and Minties. Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult said he was delighted to welcome the new citizens. “Of all the things I do as Mayor, awarding citizenship is my favourite,” he said. “It is always a very happy occasion to share with our new citizens such a momentous occasion and to truly welcome them as takata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand”.
Hanley’s Farm developer plans 354 sections Another 354 sections are in the works at Queenstown’s Hanley’s Farm. Developer RCL has applied for permission to build the sixth and seventh stages of the huge subdivision, located between the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. Hanley’s Farm, a five-minute drive from Frankton on Hanley Downs, in the Jack’s Point Resort Zone, is already a hive of building activity. Some 440 titles have already been issued for residential lots and the Ministry of Education is expected to be issued with its title for land for a new primary school there in the coming weeks. In December, Melbourne-based RCL applied for consent for 145-section stage six, and last week applied for consent for 209-section stage seven. They would take the total consented lots to about 980, but between 1500 and 2000 homes are expected to eventually be built at Hanley’s Farm. The subdivision was made possible by Plan Change 44, a private plan change application made by RCL in 2013. It became operative in 2017. Builders, families and investors have since rushed to purchase sections, which have been released stage by stage over recent years.
Breitbart readers weigh-in on Hubbard Queenstown transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard’s Tokyo Olympics bid is attracting the attention of the USA’s right-wing media. News website Breitbart reported on her recent powerlifting performances on March 1st. The article, by journalist Warner Todd Hudson, prompted more than 1000 comments from the site’s readers, the vast majority negative and many vitriolic and transphobic. It follows comments the week prior from high-profile British broadcaster Piers Morgan, who tweeted about Hubbard’s plans to compete in the Australian Open on Sunday. “This is insane. Women’s rights to basic fairness & equality are getting destroyed at the altar of political correctness”, the tweet read. Hubbard won last month’s World Cup in Rome, lifting 270kg to beat Ukraine’s Anastasiia Lysenko. She then lifted a personal best 133kg in the snatch at the Australian Open in Canberra on Sunday, March 1. But she suffered a huge set back after being red-flagged on her first two attempts in the clean and jerk, for failing to lock out her elbows. She then failed her third and final attempt, with 151kg on the bar, meaning she failed to score at all. The 42-year-old, who competed in male competitions before transitioning aged 35, crashed out of the 2018 Commonwealth Games with an horrendous arm injury. It was thought it would be career-ending, but she’s bounced back after surgery and is now pushing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, which is itself under threat from the coronavirus spread.

ER Stop Car rentals grazing and give them a home N N
I
W
I travel around the world and have seen over 100 plus airports. Most major airports (with high growth) have separated all their rental car companies in a separate building and made it very efficient. I see most car rental companies are storing/parking their excess inventory across from the high school. How about if we put a rental car building with about 15 car companies in this building and free up all the parking around the airport will allow you to expand public parking and stop traffic problems around the airport. Run a shuttle bus from the airport to rental car building and off load the traffic to the back road instead of in front of the airport. If you don’t believe me look at
the world’s busiest airport like Atlanta and Dallas and others. Also to free up air traffic except for emergency helicopters make all the non commercial traffic to go to like private planes and helicopters to Wanaka or Cromwell thus freeing up more room for commercial flights and passengers. Come on guys look at fast growing airports and learn from them before it’s too late to fix the problem. If you can afford the private limo from these airports to Queenstown. The building for the rental car companies and the shuttle cost can be shared by rental car companies. Mooooo, moo. Beep, beep.
Jardine Folks like it QUIET. OK! Why can our local bodies just not leave well enough alone. Can you not just go and be in nature any more? Why the endless upgrades, unnecessary tinkering? Why does it need to be manicured widened gravelled and titivated, amenities added. For what? To bring even more people? Just because there is money in the pot, doesn’t mean you have to spend it.
We live on thIs side because WE LIKE IT QUIET. The recent fallen trees planted by our forebears provided a shelter belt. I assume the remaining will be felled and replanted with slow growing natives. Bad luck for the people that live there, who despite being residents are ignored anyway. Mobile keypads are hard to type on.
RE: Bus no show I’m sorry but this is the most pathetic whinge, from what I can gather from this person, they left the airport and MISSED the bus that was suppose to be there and complains about waiting a minuscule 40 minutes for the next one. Sounds like a
boomer with no patience if you ask me. If you can’t work out an 0800 number that’s spelt out for you, I think there’s something wrong with this person not the system. Damn. Boomer got served.
RE: We love Wakatipu Editorial We have already seen their “consultation process” in operation. What they do, is sit there and listen to everyone’s thoughts and ideas, and then go and do exactly as they want! Example: breaking down
the 20 minute free parking at the airport, down to 10 minutes! They said that was after “public consultation”! What a load of crap. They do exactly what they want. I guess we’ve got a shituationship.

The Purple python people eaters deserve better As Killer Python connoisseur I was extremely disappointed with my lolly experience at Night’n’Day Shotover street. Their price was killer, 2 dollars per python. At New World they’re 1.40 per 100g! I then felt jipped when she pulled out 3 part pythons and charged me for 4 full pythons! That $8 for chopped up pythons AND they were hard and stale! Full price for a poor product made me hiss. Replenish your ancient lolly display NnD Shotover.
RE: RE: Marine Parade, is it still a road? Yes, we must encourage the younger generation to scribble over streets and walls with brightly coloured paints like they do in New York on the trains. Exactly what this town needs. It used to be called graffiti... now its “art”...

Kāore i te mārama? Pātai Pou o Tahuna In this digital age, when government agencies are closing down their public counter services and encouraging people to only contact them online, a human service is more valued than ever. That is what is so great about what Queenstown Citizens Advice Bureau does. CAB’s aim is to support everyone who needs help to ensure; whether you are here for a day, a month or forever that Queenstown is a great place to work live and play. Jude Lainchbury, Chairperson of CAB QTN says “We aim to be as accessible as possible. Anyone can use our service. You can pop in to see us in person, call us on the phone, or contact us via our website by using live chat or sending a message”. “We know that not everyone is comfortable or confident to do things online, and we believe in the importance of being present and available in our community. It makes a difference to people that they can just walk through the door and know someone is there to help.” “CAB volunteers are highly skilled and undertake intensive training because they want to help people and give back to their community.” “We take the time to listen and aim to ensure that everyone gets the information they need and options to resolve issues – whether it’s about their rights in a particular situation or to find a specific service.” They help people know and understand their rights and responsibilities and find services they need so they have confidence and support to take action and achieve great outcomes. Typically issues and questions they help with, include: • • • • •
Employment and immigration issues Flat sharing and tenancy issues Roles being restructured or disestablished at work Stress due to bullying at work. Hours of work and how these relate to visa’s and workplace agreements. • Financial and relationship mentoring CAB also assists employers and landlords advising on leases and agreements and what to do if parties can’t reach agreements. Based in central Queenstown at 44 Stanley Street and open Monday to Friday, CAB supports locals, visitors, workers and employers to access information and advice. There service is free, confidential and independent. They are an empathetic team of skilled and experienced volunteers who aim to empower their clients by providing a robust range of options to support their decision making. They have access to a range of resources including legislative agencies and professionals. “You can visit them at Queenstown CAB or call 03 442 6799. We’re here to help.” This week is CAB Awareness Week. This is a chance to celebrate and promote what the CAB does in communities around Aotearoa. There are more than 80 CAB locations throughout New Zealand.

Air Rescue Trust to the rescue The Lakes District Air Rescue Trust (LDART) was founded in 1990 by a group of operators and associated parties and the Trust was registered in early 1991. For nearly 30 years LDART has been associated with provision of an emergency helicopter retrieval service out of bases in Queenstown and Te Anau using locally based machinery and crews. Services are conducted on behalf of ACC, the Ministry of Health, the District Health Board, NZ Police – for SAR, and RCC NZ – for emergency beacon searches. Over the years, over 12,000 missions have been conducted. Unfortunately the service has never been fully funded by the callout agencies and thus the wider community has to support the unfunded portion of the cost in order to guarantee continuance. LDART currently assists towards paramedic and training costs and contributions to specialised medical equipment. Recent examples of equipment purchased include an automated Corpus CPR machine, a Hamilton ventilator and the latest Corpus Monitor / defibrillator. These three items alone cost over $111,000. However the importance of such gear is emphasised on review of three separate missions conducted on December 12 last year when three heart attack victims were saved by the experienced paramedic crew RESCUE HOIST OXYGEN EQUIPMENT and their associated equipment. $500,000

@dr_compost @doctorcompost benelms.com
Where’s my Gardening Mojo gone? by Ben Elms Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com It’s time to get Tony Robbins in. I’m having a crisis of motivation in the garden. Of course, it’s all been brought on by myself: I went on a part-vacation, part-education trip in September – it’s the wrong time of year to go away as a gardener and I’ve been on the back foot ever since. Combine that with one of the poorest springs in (my very short) memory for growing veggies. My garden isn’t sparkling this year
and – dare I say it – I too, am not sparkling. My motivation has gone and my tomatoes seem to have caught on to my lacklustre mood as they’re not growing clustered of red, yellow and orange goodness. I’ve been thinking about how to break out of this, get the sparkle back, grab some of the growing season that’s left and get some autumn and winter veggies growing.
So, here’s Tony Bobbin’s top motivational gardening tips: 1. Family.
Get your family involved, even if it means bribery. 20 minutes a day with a few extra hands works wonders and there’s the bonuses of bonding, mentorship and veggies.
2. Swapsies.
Talk to a gardening friend or acquaintance and see if they’ll do a half-day garden swap. Have a clear list of what you both want to achieve and smash it out. Brucie Bonus alert here: you get to talk gardening the whole time.
3. Still solo? Don’t get overwhelmed.
Write a list and number it in order of importance. Give yourself a daily time slot and ‘start’ the list. Start with something easy (it doesn’t have to be no.1) and revel in the achievement; remember how this feels when you’re attacking the bigger jobs on the list.
4. Join WWoof or Help X.
They offer a ready supply of (generally) enthusiastic and energetic travellers who want a cultural exchange and cheap travel/ accommodation.
5. Join a local gardening group.
Meeting up with fellow gardeners is probably the most motivational tip. Often, these groups do monthly meet up and garden visits, have inspiring speakers, seed and plant swaps. They’re not just for the grey brigade – all ages attend and are welcome.

A snapshot of Queenstown’s visual arts scene A new exhibition seeks to create a snapshot of Queenstown’s art scene. The Queenstown Art Now exhibition launches on Wednesday (11th March) and will showcase the work of around 70 artists from the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago region. Gallerist and artist Marc Blake says it will be one of the biggest shows in Queenstown this year. “The idea behind the exhibition is to create a snapshot of art being made across our region, something that shows the full range of creativity on offer and forms a kind of historical record at the beginning of a new decade.” It will also be the last large show at the Queenstown Contemporary gallery at Five Mile. The management team behind Five Mile Centre donated the space to the arts for one year and that tenure will come to an end midApril. Unlike traditional exhibitions, the artworks submitted have not been curated or specially selected – one of the very few rules of entry was that artists resided in the region. It’s led to a wonderfully diverse collection which includes golden cutlery and cushion covers through to traditional paintings and modern photography. “I wanted each artist to select a single artwork that best exemplifies their current practice and this means the whole show is curated by the artists themselves,” says Marc. “It also means that there is an incredibly diverse selection of work on show, which is great for the viewers too [...] It’s safe to say there may actually be something for everyone in this show and I encourage everyone to come and experience it themselves and leave all expectations behind.” Many of the artworks are for sale and the prices vary from a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars with enough to tease the wallets of serious art collectors and curious locals alike. Though the exhibition will continue from 12th - 20th March (10am to 4pm daily), Marc wants to encourage as many people as possible to soak up the buzz of the opening night. All ages are welcome and it’s BYOB. “This event is for everyone to enjoy. The majority of the artists will be in attendance too and it’s a fantastic way for everyone to meet, have fun together and celebrate and support the art and artists in our town. We want to demonstrate the amount of people here who either make art, or realise the importance of art related opportunities in a healthy society.”

Art News When fashion get weird: face masks meet fashion While a certain car company got tongues wagging for trying to make a buck out of Covid-19 fears, the fashion industry is ramping up advertising for its latest hot accessory: face masks. While ‘urban breathing masks’ have long been common in Asia, fashion designers have been marketing pricey new products to Western city dwellers. The combination of Australia’s bushfires, increasing concerns about air pollution and the recent novel coronavirus outbreak seems to have added wind to the sails of designers looking to break into new markets. Guests at last week’s Paris Fashion Week purportedly sported Chanelbranded face masks and some fashion bloggers are reviewing the masks like they would nail varnish. Meanwhile, companies like Vogmask are making dystopia sexy with taglines like ‘thrive in style’. Punters are already calling it 2020’s ‘surprise fashion trend’, which only leaves the question: would you like pink camo or unicorn detailing with Photo by: Vogmask © your urban breathing device?

LEGEND OF THE WEEK
name:
What’s your role? Duty manager at Speights Ale House. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? Never wanted to live here, didn’t want the party lifestyle. Lol been here two years now. Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? Having a quiet one with your mates until 4am in Zephyr or Bunker. What’s your favourite place to eat? Bit of self promo but Speights does bangin pub grub. Love Sundeck for tapas and Halo brekkie. Devil Burger make the best burgers – shout out to my roomies! If you were stranded in QT and you could have only 1 item, what would it be and why? A lighter, you’re everyone’s mate if you’ve got a lighter. How would someone get your special attention? Buy me food and call me pie face. Who is your inspiration? My mamma, she’s an honest angel from heaven above. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve done in the past week? I started a cute little veggie patch and after months of waiting we have little baby chillies. Patience pays off guys.

Alice Peters What is the best bad decision you ever made? Falling off the bar at the staff party and snapping my wrist. ACC come at me. If you were an animal, what would it be? An orca, they’re class! Please describe yourself in 5 words... Dorky, funny, bit stupid, stresshead. What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider “weird” if they knew? I don’t even realise I’m doing it, but I clean in silence how depressing. What’s on your bucket list? See an orca in the ocean and travel South America. What is the first thing you notice about a person? Their laugh, love a cackle. What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? These questions have really made me question life. My most valuable skill is that I’m pretty good with people, love winning over customers. The most useless skill ‘apparently’ is I can annoy people without even opening my mouth... What’s your best piece of advice? Stolen off my pal – if you’re feeling down think of it as a cloud it’ll pass and the sun will shine. Love ya Mark!

In a controversial decision by the 2019 Booker Prize Award judges, Bernardine Evaristo’s novel of modern Britain and womanhood, Girl, Woman, Other took out the top prize together with Margaret Atwood’s The Testiments. Evaristo was also the first black woman to win the Booker Prize. Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of Black British women. It paints a vivid portrait of the state of post-Brexit Britain, as well as looking back to the legacy of Britain’s colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean, told from the voices of twelve central characters who lead vastly different lives.
Ibithaj Muhammad, illustrated by Hatem Aly
A beautiful insight into the history, mystery, meaning and manufacture of the varied forms and features of our most ubiquitous Māori motif, hei tiki. Curated by Dougal Austin and supported by a stunning photo gallery of photographed hei tiki, this book is sure to impress. ‘From ancient hei tiki of exalted lineage to works by contemporary makers, Te Hei Tiki explores the long history of hei tiki and their enduring cultural potency’.
Asiya’s hijab is like the ocean and the sky, no line between them, saying hello with a loud wave. It’s Faizah’s first day of school, and her older sister Asiya’s first day of hijab - made of a beautiful blue fabric. But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful. In the face of hurtful, confusing words, will Faizah find new ways to be strong? This is an uplifting, universal story of new experiences, the unbreakable bond shared by siblings and of being proud of who you are, from Olympic medallist Ibtihaj Muhammad.

Doctor Sleep is the 63rd book published by Stephen King and a direct sequel to his 1977 novel The Shining. Doctor Sleep was originally published in 2013 with the most recent edition being released in 2019 to coincide with the debut of the haunting thriller movie (of the same name) last year. Danny Lloyd (the boy protagonist in The Shining) is now in his 40’s and struggling with alcoholism to escape his psychic abilities and the psychological trauma he experienced at the Overlook Hotel. He moves to the New Hampshire town, Fazier for a fresh, sober beginning. Here forms a psychic connection with a young girl, Abra Stone, whose powers are even stronger than his own. When she witnesses the murder of a boy by members of a local cult called the True Knot, she turns to Dan for help. This book is a must for all Stephen King fans or anyone that loves a good thriller!
The World’s Worst Children 3 David Walliams
(CF WAL – All libraries)
The monumental final part of the multimillion bestselling series from the numberone bestseller author David Walliams comes another collection of more hilariously horrible children! These stories will appeal and delight young readers. From ten-year old Hank and his endless pranks on his poor, long-suffering family, to Tandy and her titanic tantrums this compendium of catastrophically horrid boys and girls is illustrated in glorious and gruesome colour by the artistic genius Tony Ross. Walliams has cemented his place as one of the most important children’s authors of our time with global sales exceeding 23 million copies, and his books have been translated into 53 languages.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
March marching along at superquick time - even a tiny frost to nip our noses and remind us summer is packing up and ready to move to the other hemisphere. It sounds as if lots of locals are planning winter closer to home this year because of the coronavirus - that will make local businesses that strive for repeat custom happier than the ones that focus on maximum numbers rather than satisfied customers. Don’t forget tomorrow is the last day to get the QLDC airport impact assessment survey sent in so here’s the link to make sure you can have your voice heard (optimistic me wants to believe that) about whether you want millions more tourists flying in here, or whether you’d rather share the load with Dunedin and Invercargill airports. Their locals would be very grateful for more flights in and out.

And there’s a fantastique man in Arrowtown called Jeff Fawcett (sp?) who needs some huge praise. He walks up Arrowtown’s much loved Tobins Track most days and does all sorts of maintenance to keep the track in good order. What a great community spirit - thank you so much and lots of people have told me about the work you do - don’t think for a minute that your good deeds are going unnoticed. It was impossible to unnotice some halfwits on motorbikes roaring up the track so I stood in the middle to force them to slow down. They made some rude signs at me, and I couldn’t hear what they said over the noise of their lovely machines, but I could tell it was not a thanks for the warning about driving so fast. I didn’t feel like thanking them for the splatter of gravel or the clouds of dust they raised as they roared off. Isn’t it time they were banned on Tobins? Pedestrians and motorbikes are not a great combo, especially not on a track that has children and dogs and horses and crabby, interfering old women like me on it. I hope they don’t decide to ban the interfering old bat instead...

A woman was standing in her hotel room, when somebody knocked on the door. When she opened the door, there was a man who said that he has mistaken his door, apologized, and continued down the corridor. When the woman closed the door, she called security to warn them about the thief. Why did she think the man was planning to rob her?
