NOT SURE WHY WE PAY QLDC RATES? Absolutely total shame on QLDC, I live in Kingston, yes that village you administrate at the south end of the lake. I work in Queenstown like many others here in Kingston. We actually got the weather bomb the other week like you, yes the lake level becames high like you, yes every stream and river become a torrent of water like you all up there. But, the lack of information from you to us faded rather badly. That week I had no idea how to get home, finally through local social media I found I could catch a water taxi that a local here organised. The next morning I had no idea if I could get back to work, that day or the next or the next??? We had no power, no roads in both directions, no phone or cell coverage, we were completely shut in. Thank God no one had a medical emergency because there was no communication available! What happened to civil defence or any council help? OK it’s cost me a couple of days wages plus travel, but there are a lot of others like me here in that forgotten village… Solutions While I’m not a council official with any degrees after my name, however here are my thoughts. Firstly as we live on the lake shore of Wakatipu and are governed by the QLDC, some of this responsibility of our elected council must fall on their shoulders. As a community we have a Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service and a Civil Defence plan. Both fire and ambulance are run by volunteers who in my opinion are amazing. But we cannot expect them to be sitting at their stations 24/7. When our phones become non existent, that would have been the answer for emergency calls, but logically that’s a big call. There are radio coms here QLDC could have sorted.

Transport As said, many of the village work out of the area. On the day of the road closures many had to find accommodation while others privately hired water taxis. That was it! Stay or pay. The following day the road remained shut. Limited traffic was allowed the day after. Maybe the council should have helped out here, there is more than one marine operator in QT, nothing was done! Enough of my ranting, just think we here need a little more looking after. Peeved Kingston resident.

Fresh from the NZ International Comedy Festival, young comedian Jack Ansett is touring the country and heading to Queenstown this month. Jack started his comedy career in high school and was a finalist in the RAW Comedy Quest 2015. He left school to pursue comedy and now, at 21 years old, he’s still living the dream. “It’s good I had a supportive mother! She said that because I had a goal, it was okay. […] I’ve been very lucky,” he says. A self-professed “attention whore”, Jack was asked to be the ‘funny guy’ host of his school’s talent shows and he says it’s this which gave him a taste for “enjoying big audiences laughing at me”. He adds that he has had ‘real jobs’ – working as a high school drama teacher and doing audience warm-ups for shows like Family Feud and the Project. “I talk about [being a teacher] a lot in the show, being a high school drama teacher which is kind of funny as I look like a 12-year-old girl.” The show is called ‘Jack Ansett: In His Prime’, but Jack insists audiences can simply expect a classic “stand-up comedy show with jokes’. “I feel like you always have to try to shovel it into a theme and I guess the general theme is me accepting myself as being average-looking and wanting to showcase that by trying to get into Woman’s Day with a shirtless double page spread. The stories I tell follow in that direction but it’s generally just a show with funny jokes.” He’s worried that he has quite a lot of tickets to sell and hasn’t been to Queenstown before… hop online and check out jackansett.com for tickets and more information. Art News Taika Waititi wins Oscar for best adapted screenplay Last week, Taika Waititi became the first Maori filmmaker to win an Oscar for his screenplay adaptation of the 2008 novel Caging Skies. The film, called Jojo Rabbit, follows the story of a 10-year-old German boy nicknamed Jojo. He’s a member of the Hitler Youth and his imaginary friend is Adolf Hitler – the inciting incident occurs when Jojo discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their family home. “I dedicate this to all the Indigenous kids all over the world who want to do art and dance and write stories,” said Taika Waititi as he accepted his Oscar. Taika also directed the film and starred in it as Adolf Hitler. At its face, the story is not a Maori one – it’s set in Vienna and the novel was written by Christine Leunens, an American who lives in New Zealand. But Leunens and other commentators say the screenplay adaptation follows Maori storytelling traditions and brings a quirky sense of humour to the story. Another stand-out winner of the 92nd Academy Awards was Hildur Guðnadóttir, who won Best Original Score for her work on the film Joker. The Icelandic cellist, composer, and producer was the first woman to win the award since 1997 and one of only three female composers to ever be given the accolade.

Re: We ‘Freedom Camping’
I have been arguing your exact points all the time. Especially the point about the term ‘freedom campers’ as being a vilification label. I’ve met loads of NZ locals who bad mouth anyone who travels in NZ ‘freedom camping’, and it’s obvious the label has just turned sour. I’ve seen some people ruining it for everyone, but they are really few and far between. Mostly a few shitty regular tourists, shitty locals and shitty local 4WDers here and there leaving mess, or neglecting rules. BUT almost everyone I meet is really just trying to do their best. Unfortunately, these bad mouthing locals have shut down entire areas of public land, allowing councils to act and remove privilege from anyone seeking to use them for staying overnight. There IS a ratepayers issue, and i understand
this argument, but these campers DO bring money to communities willing to support them. People will pay money when they feel they are being cared for and helped out sometimes a donations box can go a long way, or services/stores to suit travellers. As for remote freedom camping - let people do it. I’ve barely come across toilet waste in NZ in general with extensive travelling. The biggest problem is garbage waste, but this is only a major problem because councils limit disposal (look at Queenstown for example!). Where do we get this money? It’s a problem, but shunning freedom campers and blaming them isn’t the answer and a ‘forward looking’ solution. So’loo’tion
Out with the old WWII Siren Why do we still have this old system. I live in Darfield with no mountains surrounding me but still the siren goes off more frequently than I would like. Especially when the entire community is asleep. My toddler runs scared of the sound and if it bothers them than I’m sure it affects most families. I understand that
the sirens are effective but that also depends on which way the wind is blowing. So I too think that with all the technology available to us surely it’s time for change. Start playing music, like Wakatipu High School
Confusing Rant. So, I’m confused: Anyone pointing out the high proportion of road incidents in the Central Lakes area that are caused by tourists is racist, but one of the proposed solutions is road signs in foreign languages. Unless we want roadways completely lined with signs, won’t someone be choosing certain languages for the signage? Wont this be cultural profiling? A number of families are playing musical primary schools at the moment because their kids are not excelling. They blame the school. Many of the same families pull the kids out of school to go to rock concerts in Dunedin, random ski days, winter holidays etc. What lesson is that for the kids? An arsehat work ethic that suits the parents but is blamed on teachers? Some people may need to come
to terms with the fact that their kids are just plain average. We are being villanized by our (appropriately average) kids for polluting the planet. These kids own multiple devices that are not biodegradable, and send oceans of irrelevant social media messages day and night that will be stored on a server somewhere (Mexico) forever. Requiring power. Oh, and can we get a bottle of drink from the shop on our way home from school? And while we are at it, China has shut down an entire city, the media is catalytic with hysteria, I am getting bnb cancellations, but we cant talk about where this virus is coming from in case we are being racist (again). I’m sorry... but what?

Facebook / Website comments Council in its great wisdom -short term greed gave the green light to let developers build 2 units over a creek on a hill. When we had a huge amount of rain recently the creek above units got blocked and the water was pouring down either side of the units then onto the road and footpath below. Luckily it didn’t go further down on to other properties. Wonder how much money this will cost ratepayers to clear up and any future problems. Piggy bank. RE: Poll Question These are two separate issues (with your pictures) a cycle path and the fact that some drivers here hate cyclists. If we can change the thought process about cyclists there would be no need for ‘cycling lanes’. There already is a cycling lane. It’s called a road.

British hiker dies in Mt Aspiring National Park
Lake Hayes may have Blue Green algae
The body of British hiker Stephanie Simpson was found on Friday after almost a week of searching in Mt Aspiring National Park. The 32-year-old was reported missing on Monday after she failed to return from a hike and did not arrive at work.
The Otago Regional Council has identified a green discoloration in the lake, which may be blue green algae. ORC has suggested swimmers and pets stay out of the lake until testing is complete.
It is understood she was hiking down Mt Armstrong when she became disoriented and her body was discovered in the Pyke Creek area.
Alice Robinson wins emerging talent at Halsberg awards
Airport public consultation Public consultation on the future of the Queenstown and Wanaka Airports begins this week. Last August, Queenstown’s mayor Jim Boult announced councillors would not consider any changes to either airport until assessments had been carried out.
Local Queenstown skier Alice Robinson won the Emerging Talent award at the 57th Halberg Awards last Thursday night (13th February). She’d already won gold in the giant slalom last week and went on to win her second World Cup slalom event over the weekend at the FIS Alpine World Cup.

The move came after intense pressure from anti-airport growth lobby groups and widespread local rejection of plans to increase the airport’s noise boundaries to enable more flights. New housing development on Queenstown Hill A massive section of Queenstown Hill has been earmarked for a new subdivision. Developer Silver Creek Limited bought the 33 hectares on the southern flanks of the hill, above Frankton Road and Goldfield Heights, from well-known Queenstown family the Middletons six months ago. Silver Creek, has begun assessing the wilding pine covered hillside for residential development. Construction of the first phase on Queenstown Hill, with potentially 30 house and land packages, could be made available within a year.
Milford Sound road and Ultimate Hikes update Essential services convoys for Milford Sound businesses started Sunday and a four-wheel drive route is also now available for emergency services. Tourism buses will be able to use the road from the end of the week, however, no date has been given for when the road will reopen to the public. The road will need significant rebuilding over the next 12 months. Ultimate Hikes hopes to resume tramps on both the Routeburn and Milford Tracks this season, as it fights to retain its 160 staff. Both tracks, in Fiordland National Park and Mt Aspiring National Park, were extensively damaged by the rain.

As crops complete and space becomes free, it’s an opportunity to grow more goodness. We’re rolling the dice with what weather autumn gives us, but with hoops and frost cloth we can fight back and extend this growing time.
If you’re starting from scratch, or expanding your veggie garden empire, you can give yourself a head start in how you treat your freshly dug-up soils or fill up your new raised beds. Looking back at my own early veggie beds, I wish I’d known what I know now. I started with straight Central Otago soil, adding compost and mulch on a regular basis. At the end of the growing season my soil looked like shit Central Otago soil again. It’s taken me years to get my soil looking good – but I’ll let you know how to start with great soil from the get-go.
Start by chucking a wee bit of compost over the bed. If you’re planting heavy feeders like broccoli and cabbage, mix two generous handfuls of compost in the hole before planting. Leave old veggie roots in the bed to rot down; this adds carbon, food for microbes and air pathways (but you will have to remove it completely if the plant was diseased).
So, what can we sneak in? 1. Tatties.
Late tasty tatties! One Indian summer, I planted potatoes as late as March and harvested them in May.
The trusty earthworm is a great barometer from which to measure your soil health. No earthworms? Enough said. Our goal should be a soil with earthworms everywhere, in every shovel of soil there should be earthworms.
So here is Dr Compost’s best soil recipe yet. 45% Good-looking topsoil.
2. Leafy cut-and-grow-again greens.
My favourite: leafy cut-and-grow-again greens. Use your frost cloth to keep this crop cooler on hot days.
Beware of poor imitations! Use the best top soil you can get your hands on. Sieve it first if there’s signs of roots to avoid introducing couch grass.
45% Compost. 3. Cabbages.
Plant a crop of tasty cabbages ready for a winter of sauerkraut goodness!
4. Broad Beans.
If you don’t know what to plant, plant broad beans. If you need the space later on, they make for a great ‘green manure nitrogen fixing crop’ that you can chop back into the soil.
5. Radishes.
Radishes. Japanese daikons aren’t as hot, they grow big and are a beautiful addition to any salad.
If you’ve made it yourself – fantastic! If you’re buying it, ‘Mushroom Compost’ is the way to go. It’s rich in nutrients and organic matter. I’m yet to meet a gardener who hasn’t loved and raved about using Mushroom Compost. Start with a bang not a whimper!
10% Biochar.
Use just 5-10% biochar in your veggie beds and you’re set from the get-go with all the benefits of this honeycombed, long-lasting carbon. It captures and holds nutrients and a home/feeding station for soil life. Okay, that’s the basic recipe. To spice things up and our desire to grow nutrient dense vegetables we can add:
Lime/dolomite. 6. Bush Beans.
There’s just enough time for some bush beans. Don’t devote a whole bed, pop them in and around your cabbages, in the pumpkin patch, or even in a flower bed. Lettuces are also great for popping in these unused spaces.
7. Broccoli.
Brilliant purple sprouting broccoli – if it’s not in your garden already, plant/sow one today. These goodies, with a few handfuls of compost added on the side once a month, can keep going all winter long.. Keep popping in plants or seeds wherever you have space each week to make the most of any good weather and you’ll (hopefully) keep the bounty running long into the winter. Happy Gardening.
Mix five parts fine garden lime with one part dolomite. Add 10 cups per cubic metre to the main mix.
Rock minerals.
There are a few different products on the market, application rates vary. I would look at 10 cups per cubic metre. Remember to be patient as rock isn’t instantly available and requires bacteria and fungi to consume and make the minerals available to plant roots.
Humates.
Humates are derived from ancient organic matter (coal) they’re a fantastic food source to promote fungi in our soil. Add 10 cups per cubic metre. Consider taking a soil test one or two years down the line to check on your soil and figure out what it needs.

There are plenty of trails snaking through the area that offer great rides and amazing views, all starting from The Gate on the corner of SH8 and Barry Avenue. Take it easy Cross SH8 and turn left into Shortcut road. Go past The Wooing Tree, then take a right onto Partridge road. Pass the Aquatic Centre and follow the path all the way to the Lowburn Inlet. Follow the trail back towards Cromwell, past the Alpha Street playground, around the bend where the mighty Clutha and the Kawarau rivers meet, ending at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct for a lovely cuppa next to the lake.

3. Take the challenge Follow the easy ride as described above, then go past the Cromwell Heritage Precinct and follow the trail all the way to the Bannockburn Bridge. Cross the bridge and go up the road to the right, go past the historic Bannockburn Pub. Turn right onto Old School House road and follow it to the Carrick Range turn-off. Climb up past the old Australian mine and onto Duffer’s Saddle. Then enjoy the quick descent down the Nevis Road back to Bannockburn Road. Follow the road or the lake track back to The Gate. If you want to make a day of it, turn onto Hawksdun road and follow it all the way to Clyde. Difficulty: hard

Please tell me it’s not true that QLDC spent half a million dollars on consultants to have those hideous WELCOME TO ARROWTOWN 40 KMH signs put up!! With the creative energy and business brilliance of our own community, surely some local brains could have tackled this problem (if it was one) for bugger all money or time. And when so much effort is made to keep Arrowtown pretty and green and as smallscale as possible, why do the signs have to be the size of motorway ones? I’m sure this must be the work of the same morons who think it’s a great idea to let that huge development at the bottom of already dangerous and narrow McEntyre Hill create hundreds - in fact thousands - more vehicle movements every day. Grrr... Aux armes, citoyens!!! Time to protest... And for good news, I was very happy to hear from a fellow patient in the Clyde chemo ward, that NZSki gives health insurance to all their fulltime employees. Three cheers to NZSki - everyone wants to work for businesses that care so much for their staff. I watched the Oscars at Dorothy Browns on Monday - what a show, especially seeing it on the big screen and such acclaim for “Jojo Rabbit”. Fab Australian actress Genevieve Lemon was in the audience (the Arrowtown one, not the Oscars one!) telling us about being in Jane Campion’s movie “The Power of the Dog” currently being filmed in the Maniototo. In case you think the film world is all glamour, Gen’s character in the film has to be heavily adorned with large hairy moles by the makeup team. Just warning anyone who’s auditioning for a role in anything....

As well as superstars, I wanted to see the supermoon and go for a walk in that magical light. Try as I might, I just couldn’t stay awake late enough, but at 5 am the man in the moon helpfully woke me and I managed to see my garden glowing silver. There’s another supermoon on March 9 if you missed this last one. With so many brilliant things happening, it’s hard to keep track of events - did any of you go to the Tony Backhouse gospel singing course? SO exhilarating and the Arrowtown Hall was packed with those who came to enjoy the free concert afterwards on Sunday afternoon. Nadene Milne is giving a talk on Tuesday night at Dorothy Browns about an art collection she is selling on behalf of a fascinating couple who started collecting contemporary NZ art years ago. I wish we’d had these sort of talks available BEFORE I started buying the many mistakes that now hide in my house.

Monthly Column It’s been a rough start to the year for those of us in the Queenstown district and in fact all over the south.

As rain hammered the lower south roads were closed, people evacuated and a lot of damage done throughout Southland and Otago. The State Highways south of Queenstown were shut for a couple of days as flooding over-ran where the roads should have been. Glenorchy felt the full force of the rain as the road in was closed and the Rees River overtopped in to the flood zone. Luckily those affected had self-evacuated before this had occurred. The local fire crew did a fantastic job here in supporting these people, as did the entire community, as people offered help in many ways. We’re lucky to have such wonderful people living here in our community. In times of disaster that is when our true community spirit shines here in the south, evident in what occurred in Glenorchy. While the water is gone for now, the real work begins as people go in to recovery mode. Our tourism sector is also incurring various challenges at present with Coronavirus causing many visitors to put their holidays on hold. It is evident the number of tourists visiting our town has dropped this summer period. Some operators have informed me they have had cancellations of bookings which were scheduled for the next few months. This accompanied with the damage to Milford Road means our tourism industry in the south is taking huge hits.

This Government needs to be doing more to get it open. While it was good the Conservation Minister flew over Fiordland recently to view the damage, locals want to see earthworks happening on the ground rather than politicians in the sky. This Government is missing in action in Fiordland. Transport Minister Phil Twyford should be pumping extra resource in to NZTA to get a repair plan and timeline sorted as soon as possible.

While there is no confirmed date for when the road will reopen, people can still access Milford via plane in the interim. I’m also lobbying the Minister to allow concessions issued for Milford Sound to be transferred to Doubtful Sound until normal operations resume to ensure the tourism operators don’t go broke. Our economy is suffering from all of these challenges. Each day the road is closed in to Milford, the local economy is losing about $1.5 million. Milford Road should be a Government priority so we can get our tourism operators back up and running as normal as soon as possible.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK What’s your role? I’m the owner of Packrafting Queenstown in the summer and part of a film crew in winter. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? 9 years. I’ve worked in adventure tourism and outdoor education for my whole career, Queenstown is obviously a brilliant playground and also offered a bunch of different career opportunities. Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? Well Packrafting obviously! Join a course, learn a skill and go get into your own missions somewhere hiking and paddling in the backcountry! What has been your best/ worst date? I’ve been in a relationship for 7 years and have two young boys at home so dates are aspirational right now! But I guess most of our “dates” used to be disappearing up a mountain or heading down a river somewhere. Sarah and I used to be freelance expedition leaders so we travelled the world a lot. Our dates could start breakfast in a tent in the mountains and end with a swanky dinner in a city hundreds of miles away. Nowadays we’d settle for a quiet drink or dinner somewhere!! What’s the best bad decision you ever made? A series of bad decisions really. Subsequently I lost my job and started looking for a new one. I stumbled into outdoor education and started the first steps down a path that would see me climb the world highest freestanding mountain 9 time, achieve 5 first descents of rivers, meet the mother of my kids and living in QT! What’s on your bucket list? Working in Antarctica. It’s the only continent I’ve not worked in.

Who is your inspiration? Explorers like Ernest Shackleton or Sir Ranulph Fiennes. They’re full on bad asses and have influenced my professional life a fair bit. I was lucky enough to have Sir Ranulph Fiennes endorse one of my expeditions back in the day. He was really kind and helped praise on us publicly which was amazing. Behind closed doors when we were chatting there were moment when I’m convinced he thought we were bad shit crazy... Which is rich coming from a guy who cut his own frost-bitten fingers off in his shed. What is the first thing you notice about a person? Maybe some of those non-verbal signals we all give off. I think I notice if a person is receptive, engaged and switched on or stuck with their thumb in their bum and their mind in neutral. What is your favourite season and why? Summer. Hands down. Live is better in board shorts! I’m pretty passionate about rivers and as much as I still paddle in the winter, you can’t beat a good river trip in the sun. What is your most valuable skill? And your most valuable? Speaking Swahili doesn’t come in handy all that often any more so I guess that’s kinda useless. And most valuable skill I guess is problem solving. When guiding or instructing swift water rescue I think being able to solve issues is pretty important and when I’m doing film crew work having some initiative and a way of thinking outside the box probably keeps my phone ringing and jobs coming in. That feeds my family so that’s gotta be the most valuable skill I have. What’s your best piece of advice? Before you fight a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then you’ll be a mile away and he won’t have any shoes.

What: Tuki Festival Where: Glendu Station, Wanaka When: Saturday 8th February Reviewer: Ch’i Bangs
Rain hit the window screen. This was not a good sign. Wet weather would doom the outcome for Tuki Festival. The venue was across the road from the Glendu Campground. Tuki traffic had to compete with kids meandering on bikes. The entrance was a whimsical forest journey. A branch arch way opened out to a view of the mainstage and Glendu bay. The familiar voice of P-Digzzz piped up “Whaddup, whaddup, KINGS AND QUEENS OF TUKIIIIIIIIIII”. We threw a bag of chips on the rug and joined the indie kids for Mild Orange. “Yeah I’ve been looking for some.. feelings”. Three suited women walked out. The crop blonde frontwoman was Chelsea Jade. Her performance had to be captivating, she was singing to a backing track. It was. Choreographed moves and her chic throb pop tracks set the party mood. “And beep, beep, I’ve got tears in my eyes”. A highlight. She didn’t just stand and sing, she went down and danced with the fangirls. The sun was blazing, smashing expectations. We retreated into the forest for Anika Moa’s set. People gathered round the stage, laughing at her unbounded humour. Tuki did things differently. BYO cups. Men peed into haybales! They valued the land. This message got amplified by the soul-jazz reggae band Trinity Roots.
It was mmmk. Totally worth it. Must Do! “New Zealand is not for sale” said Warren Maxwell the end of the set. Back at the forest stage were Queenstown favourites, Club Panther Claw. The dance thrash duo now included a guitarist – making their whole sound live. Heavy synth sent everybody into a freaky forest vortex. A major contrast to the mainstage act, Tami Neilson, the Canadian country soul singer. Back on the rug for Tiki Tane’s solo set. A looping station meant a song took ages to set in. “Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba” He sang for a good minute. Ironically, it was getting a little chilly for the Chills. They played hits like ‘Pink Frost’ and ‘Kaleidoscope World’ but I hate to admit, they were flat. I was more fixated on the moon than the music. “WHAKARONGO MAI RA” Wailed the drummer. A firing guitar sequence came soon after ‘Dun, dun, dun, dun’ [silence]. Suddenly a wall of sound hit the crowd. Alien Weaponry. Maori Metal. Their energy was UNREAL! This was their first home gig after an extensive European tour. They moved all over the stage, leaning out, pulling mighty pukanas and thrashing their heads. These kids are barely 20! “RAUPATU!” They amped the audience. The crowd was asked to split then run into each other. We returned to the rug buzzing. The chips were still unopened. This was a testament to the amount of fun that was had at Tuki Festival.

Dementia – a dirty word? Not here in the Queenstown Lakes District. Alzheimers Society Otago have had an office based in the St John’s rooms Frankton since late 2018 and been working consistently to support those diagnosed with Dementia and their families to continue to live full and connected lives. With two successful Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Program’s having been run in the past 2 years, a third is taking place mid-February. Participants from the inaugural program running in October 2018 continue to attend “The Remarkables Club’ maintenance program, some travelling from as far as Alexandra, such is their conviction as to the benefits the program provides. The Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) program has been developed specifically for people with mild to moderate dementia. It’s aim? To improve mood and enhance memory and concentration. It involves 14 one-hour sessions held over 7 weeks with themed activities that respectfully engage the participants, encouraging engagement by drawing on memories and opinion rather than through fact finding, which can sometimes be quite stressful. The participants then have the opportunity to join a 24-week maintenance programme. With a Community Educator role established in Queenstown since late 2018, Alzheimers Otago has also been working to provide people diagnosed with dementia and their loved ones who care for them, with information, support and advice. This can come in many forms from coffee and carer support groups, home visits and education to a shoulder to lean on when new challenges arise. If you have any questions or concerns about memory loss, Alzheimers Disease or Dementia or would like to know more about our Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) program, don’t hesitate to give your local Community Educator, Gayle Thornton a call.
