Fire, Music and Hope On January 1st, 2020 Queenstown woke up to a whole new world.

While the dusty remnants of the last decade lingered, it was a blanket of smoke that confronted our new year. In that moment Queenstown woke up to the reality of the disaster that was unfolding an ocean away.

The Australian bush fires, for many, finally hit home.

Images of homes engulfed in flame, raging infernos decimating tracks of bush and leaving in its wake a legacy of death, destruction and hardship. It’s almost too much to take. The feeling of helplessness can creep in like the fog and pull you under.

But just when it feels like there is nothing to be done - local musician Shay Muddle had a simple idea: gather some musos to play some tunes, pass the hat and raise some money for our Aussie whanau.

Soon enough an event came together and, with help and support from the community, Wakatipu Waiata For Australia was born. Products were donated to be auctioned off, a crowd funding page created, and an impromptu music festival - conceived, nurtured and presented in less than a week. These things usually take months - but not when it’s something this important.

Help came thick and fast - damn near every musician in town, events professionals, community leaders, sponsors; all of them working for free, doing whatever they could to help. It was a no brainer for me - my brother-in-law calls NE Victoria home. He’s 20km from the fires and since the start of 2020 has helplessly watched a firestorm bare down on the home he built with his bare hands and hard graft. The fire hasn’t taken it - yet - but Conrad and his family are still evacuated and waiting…

The team who put this gig together are just a side note. The people that deserve the praise are all of you - our amazing and generous community who came out to the show, opened your wallets and your hearts. You’re the ones that are going to make the real difference. All the funds will go directly to the Lions Club in Australia, they’re on the ground, at the face of this - they know which communities need our help the most.

Here in NZ we know that disasters don’t end when the news cycle moves on - just ask the folks in Christchurch… our Aussie friends are in for a long fight. As Queenstowners we wanted to send them a message - a message of hope, aroha and support. A message that we have their back, that we want to help shoulder some of the load and that they aren’t alone. And I think after Sunday, they won’t just know that, they’ll feel it.

You may have walked away a bit miffed that Billy Idol didn’t play White Wedding on Saturday. You’ll be happy to know that the concert wasn’t entirely without a white wedding. The form of Government we get is up to us.

Winston Churchill once famously described democracy as “the worst form of Government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time”. Democracy can be messy, uncomfortable, and can generate results we neither like nor understand. UK’s recent election, the Brexiteering within it, the earlier Brexit referendum, all validate Churchill’s description.

In the ‘warts and all’ grab bag that is democracy, there’s no shortage of warts. Self-important politicians, manipulative political marketers, and special interests playing politics for private benefit. For too many, including some world leaders, politics is a game and something to be played and won; if you can get away with it, anything foul is fair; and all in pursuit of a personal payoff prize.

But the truth is that these are symptoms, not the cause, of a malfunctioning democracy. When democracy is “the worst form of government” that’s on us.

Egotistical politicians only get elected when we elect them, political marketers can only manipulate us when we don’t understand the issues, politics can only be hijacked for private benefit when we don’t pay attention.

Similarly, democracy is “better than all those other forms tried” when we’re at our best. When we decide issues based on understanding and merit. When we yell at the TV not because of something that happened in a game, but because news was cut short to cover the game. When we resist the urge to join political ‘tribes’, to respond to rallying cries rather than reason, and to vote with our mates instead of our minds. When we truth-check Trump, and BS-bust Boris.

It’s on us to do this at all scales, from global to local. Locally, at a council meeting held late last year, twice as many members of the public wanted to speak as time allowed. That’s a win for democracy (but on the other hand, how many people didn’t know there was a council meeting on?) and another win the mayor immediately doubled the allowed time so everyone could be heard. One of the first to be heard was a local journalist explaining the difficulty covering local issues when people would rather watch reality TV than engage with reality.

A threat to democracy, but easily fixable by a TV remote and our choices. During the meeting, rule changes were proposed to make admin easier, but also harder for people to engage with Council proceedings: after public engagement, they were struck out.

Democracy has built-in opportunities for the good, and for the bad. We can be an active part of ensuring we get the government we want, or we can be stuck with the government we deserve. Which of those we get, is up to us.

by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Gosh, real live summer! It’s so delicious lying in the shade under a linden tree getting drunk on that summer smell with the bees buzzing their fuzzy hearts out. Is there anything better?

And lovely to hear that there’s rain in Australia damping down the forest fires at last. It seems that everyone here has been involved in some way with sending help and I’ve lost count of the number of events to raise funds and gatherings to sew mittens for koalas and generally make things cheerier for our poor neighbours over the ditch. Best was the Step One undies donation. I hear they are the comfiest place to keep your testicles, but I lack the equipment to test that myself. They donated a whole container of said undies as they felt that when you’ve lost everything, clean, comfy, brand new knickers are a joy.

And for more joy, what could be better than discovering Smith and Western has opened up in Arrowtown’s Ramshaw Lane? It’s only a summer pop up but clever designer Francesca has done a stunning fitout to showcase her NZ made clothes. I often get asked why Arrowtown is so appealing and it’s because there are no chain stores and no buildings taller than the trees. It makes such a huge difference. Clyde is doing its darnedest to follow the Arrowtown example - owner operated shops and cafes have so much more charm. If you haven’t been to Clyde lately, its well worth a visit. The Orchard Garden is a lovely place for lunch. They do have inside dining, but they’ve spent over 30 years growing big hedges that make the walls of the outside dining rooms, and at this time of year, there’s nothing nicer.

We’re so lucky living here... Being a place that everyone wants to visit means there are so many brilliant artists and speakers and performers here to stimulate and challenge us. Fraser Cameron who is a director of the EU Asia centre was speaking at the Catalyst Trust event this week. I know he’s pro EU so we weren’t going to be hearing any great praise for Brexit but it was fascinating hearing his take on the challenges for Britain.

And Jack Stobart has given himself a big challenge by buying Gary Mahan’s art gallery in Arrowtown. Most people I know have fallen in love with something from Doc and Sally Mahan’s eclectic selection over the years and we will all miss their magic touch, but hope they enjoy a more relaxing life and let energetic, young Jack, whose parents own the very wellknown Birdwoods Gallery in Havelock North, keep the Arrowtown art lovers happy.

Mulching our way into a new decade

by Ben Elms Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered

by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill.

Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com In summer, our garden soil can quickly end up parched, so we need to cover it to avoid soil compaction and any negative effects on soil biology, structure and available nutrients.

Mulch is a layer of material applied to the surface of soil. It’s a food source for our bacteria, fungi, worms and our growing plants. It always amazes me at the end of a crop’s growing season when that mulch has all but disappeared.

So, what can we mulch with?

1. Straw.

Spray-free if you can. My favourite in this category is lucerne (alfalfa) hay as it has a high nitrogen content compared to a wheat or barley straw, it also breaks down quicker, acting like a slow release fertiliser. Pea straw can be good, but I find it likes to blow away. Be wary of the higher chemical warfare used in the growing of pea straw.

2. Weeds.

Weeds that haven’t gone to seed can be harvested and used as mulches providing plenty of nutrients. Beware of those in flower they can still turn to seed and watch out for them re-rooting on the soil’s surface. Here’s where all those annoying dock leaves can come in useful...

3. Comfrey.

Once you’ve established a patch of comfrey away from your vegetable garden it just keeps on giving with a multitude of uses. Chop generous amounts and spread thickly around your plants. It provides cover and breaks down rapidly releasing its nutrients. You can just keep on using all season long and it cost you nothing.

4. Woodchips.

Beware, these can do more harm than good as they suck nitrogen out of your soil. They’re best applied when they’re in full rotting down mode. It also helps if they’re from deciduous trees rather than the more common pine species available.

5. Compost.

Compost can come in many sizes, it’s not always soil-like. So, use those chunkier composts as mulches.

6. Living mulches.

The ‘Three Sisters’ (corn, beans and squash) is a classic example of a living mulch in action. We can grow living mulches around other plants. A crop of broccoli or cabbage can have alfalfa or lupins sown around them. These plants fix nitrogen and add valuable carbohydrates to the soil to help our all-important bacteria and fungi populations. Then there’s all the organic matter they’re growing; trim them regularly and BOOM, you’ve got more free mulch.

Do more than donate

I W I’ve donated to the Australian Bushfires, yes. Did I

immediately feel good about it? Yes. Did I continue on with my normal routine? Yes... that wasn’t until I read the article ‘Forget bushfire donations, change a little’ from Nathalie Whitaker, that I started to reflect on the donation frenzy the globe has whirled into.

She was co-founder for the New Zealand organisation called ‘Give A little’ an online platform used as a crowd funding method to help people in need reach their monetary target (I’m sure you’ve donated or used it before. Heck! I’m sure there’s dozens of pages dedicated to the Australian Bushfires). She starts by talking about her role, positively. How it was ‘feelgood work’ to watch kiwi generously give money to well needed cause. But the Give-a-little team saw the another side to these pages which caused a lot of emotional trauma. ‘We cried a lot in the Givealittle office.’

Nathalie goes on to explain how ‘crowdfunding is kind to those with a crowd’. They would see the back end of many pages that needed funds desperately but were unable to reach their targets. She started to cotton on to what made a page successful and what didn’t. Often the issues that were where too big, confronting or political made kiwis uncomfortable to give to. The page needed to have the right aesthetics to be amplified on media.

The awkwardness around putting a price on somebody’s life made the team feel sick when publicly summing up the funds they reached. I personally started to feel uneasy when seeing fundraising competitions among communities. Media flaunting their huge donation nest egg then taunting other communities to bet their sum. ‘Most donations are made at highly emotional times, when we are at our most human but also our least analytical.’ as Nathalie points out.

As we endure the polluted media aftermath of scrolling through horrifying images from the fire - an overwhelming wave of emotion and helpless causes us to take the quick fix line of instant gratification a.ka credit card donations. The instant money leaves your account it warms the soul’. I found this part of the article undeniably true. Do we actually follow up after

our donation and see if it’s done any good?

Nathalie’s most sobering realisation about her time at Give a little was that generosity was totally insufficient for solving our problems.

‘We desperately need unity.’ When faced with great suffering like the Australian bushfires, I wholeheartedly believe that the most impactful thing we can do is give up some of our comfort in solidarity. From here it’s only a hop, skip and jump from generosity to unity.

Unity doesn’t campaign as well as charity.

We’re facing massive challenges that need us to invest our time and effort... We can’t keep contracting out of all the hard work with our credit cards. Helping hands instead of hand outs has far reaching result on a crisis.

Volunteering our time is the biggest generosity we could give.

This is the important message I took from this article.

We can donate and it will help but it won’t stop the fires. Donating will only cover a fraction of the rebuild.

Donating won’t rally the political shift Australia needs to make changes required for next summer. Nathalie gave a more localized solution to our weary minds.

‘For our Australian neighbours, let’s pledge to plant natives like crazy this year.’ What if we pledged to re-plant millions more natives here in NZ and helped every Kiwi farmer adopt regenerative agriculture practices as a pledge to support our neighbours in Australia?

I read, I listened and I got motivation into action.

Suddenly, Wednesday evening I was down at Jean Maples Nursery potting up native Matagouri/Wild Irishmen (which is a threaten species) for Wakatipu Reforestation Trust. 300 Matagouri’s were ready for their plant days. I’ve been living here 8 years and haven’t been to one ever! 10,000 plants need to be potted and a 10,000 more need to prepped for next year. We have an amazing conservation organisation right here on our doorstep, but if they had more hands helping they could be planting way more trees.

Every tree counts in the global climate scheme.

Plant more trees.

What is going on with the planners at NZTA? On Christmas eve heading out of Queenstown there is ANOTHER smash at the interaction of the Crown Range and SH6 that led to hundreds of cars sitting waiting for emergency services to help the victims and clear the scene. On the first week back in the New Year yet another accident in the same place saw me and another hundred vehicles sitting waiting at exactly the same location. The bottom of the Crown where it connects to SH6 is a notoriously dangerous intersection but in summer holidays it can be deadly as tourists make stupid decisions of when to pull out, thinking the road is clear but not seeing the cars in their blind spot or hidden by the vehicle turning left, about to head up the hill. This notorious spot may not warrant a round about or light permanently but surely NZTA could set up temporary lights, in the period between work break up for Christmas and the kids going back to school.

Far better to do this over the holiday period than the craziness that’s unfolding at present, with what seems as if all main roads are being resealed at our regions at the same time and during the busiest period of the year. Fern Hill, Kawarau Bridge, Arthurs Point, Cardrona, Frankton Road and Arrowtown seem to all be up for resealing at the one time. The frustration has led to apologies from NZTA and involved the police at times but surely some simple foresight could see the issue coming. Would you imagine NZTA closing Auckland’s motorways at the same time and during the peak period just to do some maintenance that could be done at anytime? So why Queenstown in summer. Next year please consider resealing the roads in October or November and perhaps over summer put in some temporary sensible road safety protocols such as temporary lights in key dangerous traffic spots.

To end on a positive, the alternative road signage for getting in and out of Queenstown is a great idea.

Employees be like, “make it a 2 day week but I want my normal pay” It’s not applicable to every trade or industry.

If you’re in a position to do it then great but it’s not a one size fits all solution.

I do it’s great, could never go back to 5 days.

From Zimbabwe to Arrowtown: Birdwoods South Jack Stobart’s bringing incredible sculptures from the dramatic landscapes of Zimbabwe to little old Arrowtown.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Jack’s Mum, Julia Stobart, had established a reputation as an artist, creating bird-inspired sculptures from recycled oil drums. Political and civil unrest under Robert Mugabe’s rule forced the family to relocate to New Zealand in the early 2000s, when Jack was twelve.

The family opened a gallery in Hawke’s Bay called Birdwoods, selling large stone sculptures made by Zimbabwean artists as well as work by Julia and local New Zealand artists.

“We lived next to the gallery and Mum and Dad would do regular buying trips to Zimbabwe. As well as stone and metal works, it sells textiles and creative crafts. The gallery is now known as one of the top things to do in the area,” says Jack.

After a few years living in Queenstown and a year spent living and working around the world, Jack returned to his parents’ Hawkes Bay gallery in January 2019 and accompanied them on a buying trip to Zimbabwe as he “had nothing else better to do.”

“It was an amazing experience going back as an adult. There’s 95% unemployment and 72% live in poverty. It’s astronomical. Nobody can easily access food, there’s no power or running water. It’s hard to describe exactly what it is like to my friends in New Zealand.

“But it is rich in minerals. Zimbabwe means ‘houses of stone’ in the Shona language and there’s incredible rocks and minerals throughout Zimbabwe, so sculpting has become an important industry.”

Sculpting communities, with as many as 100 artists living and working together, spend months carving, sculpting and sanding the hard rock and minerals with basic tools to create stunning pieces of art. The work is hard, but can be rewarding: if an artist sells one large sculpture to a foreign buyer, it can feed their family for months.

“It’s amazing, very inspiring what they can do with incredibly difficult conditions – it’s very time consuming, highly skilled work,” says Jack.

When one of the artists offered to teach Jack, he jumped at the chance and spent three months learning how to shape and polish the stone. Over that time, he also collected more than 200 pieces of art from local artists.

On Jack’s return to Queenstown, a chance meeting with Arrowtown gallery owner Gary Mahan provided an opportunity: Gary was selling his gallery and so Birdwoods South was born. The new gallery (located on Buckingham Street, behind Ray White) will officially open to the public on 6th February. Larger pieces can also be found at Wet Jacket Winery (“they’ve been great to work with,” adds Jack) – all of the artwork is available for sale.

It’s Queenstown’s biggest day out of the summer, and when summer finally dropped in the week leading up to the Gibbston concert, the desperate pleas for last minute tickets went up all over Facebook. 15,000 people brought Gibbston’s usual tourist traffic to a halt as they co-ordinated getting to Gibbston to get the best spot to park up, drink wine and listen to rock anthems from history. CCR was the stand-out performance on the day when headliner Billy Idol didn’t play his bangers.

We love our town and at Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) we are here to support everyone to ensure that this is a great place to work, live and play.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a nationwide, but locally based, community organisation. We provide free, confidential, independent information and advice to anyone who needs it. Often in the New Year, with hospitality businesses getting busier and office-based businesses returning to work after a break, we get an influx of queries about employment-related issues.

Queries about holiday pay and if public holidays worked have been remunerated correctly are common this time of year, as are enquiries from employees who are feeling burnt-out after working extra hours over busy periods (or longer term).

Other issues and questions we can help with include: • My employer has told me that they are restructuring and my position may be “disestablished”.

• I am suffering from stress due to being bullied and harrassed at work by my manager.

• The hours that I am rostered to work do not meet the hours stated on my work visa and employment agreement.

• My employment agreement states that I am required to provide four weeks’ notice. I am employed on a low skilled work visa and want to change jobs, however I don’t think four weeks’ notice is fair.

We can also assist employers, advising on employment agreements and what to do if you have ongoing issues with an employee’s performance, or what happens if attempts to communicate issues turn into accusations of workplace bullying. These are just a small sample of employment-related queries.

Based in central Queenstown (44 Stanley Street) and open Monday – Friday, the CAB supports both employees and employers to access the information and assistance they need to understand and fulfil their employment rights and responsibilities. We provide free, confidential, independent information and advice to anyone.

Canyon Brewing buzzing over bee initiative When Bee the change presented itself to Canyon Brewing, we knew straight away that we wanted to be aligned with this awesome community project. Neal is on a mission to help the declining honeybee population and we are thrilled to be part of it. Sponsoring the Bee’s is a great way for Canyon Brewing to give back to the Arthurs Point community in the future. By sponsoring our own individual hives, we can aid Neal on his mission to educate and pollinate in Queenstown. Eventually the Beehives will start to pollinate the fruit trees around the hives, this area will then become a community garden for the locals to enjoy at their leisure.

Once ready, the honey will be harvested and sold back to Canyon Brewing to incorporate into our food and beverages. Go Orange and Canyon Brewing Marketing manager, Emma Hansen, says she is happy to see the hives already in place and working towards a happy, healthy and thriving honeybee community right on our doorstep.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK What’s your role?

I run my own business called iNSPiRE. We offer Youth Empowerment Programmes - school holiday programmes and after school sessions to young people in the area developing personal skills and positive wellbeing. Think meditation, mindfulness, gratitude journalling, learning through games and lots of fun activities! I started iNSPiRE a year ago stemming from a passion to help empower young people to feel really great about themselves in a world where there is a lot of pressure growing up nowadays. My background is a degree in Education and years working with young people, voluntarily and paid in formal and informal education settings in multiple countries.

How long in QT and why did you choose to live here?

My partner and I moved to Queenstown in November 2015. We came on holiday prior to this - and when we were parasailing over Wakatipu Nick said “shall we just move here?”

I replied “yeah, why not?”

How would someone get your special attention?

My two main love languages are words of affirmation or physical touch so any lovely words shared or hugs are always well received!!

What has been your best date?

Nick and I went on a helicopter ride and landed at the top of the Remarkables in winter - stunning and so much fun considering my fear of heights!!!

What’s the best bad decision you ever made?

Leave my last job and start my own business with no financial backing - just a real belief and passion in what I am doing/want to do!!

What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew?

Every night I always go to sleep wearing bed socks (even in summer) because I love my feet getting all toasty warm and then taking my socks off and feeling the cold bed sheets!
