Catastrophes bring communities together Australia is going through its climate catastrophe this year. Drought, weather patterns, warming seas have led to much of southern Australia burning and all of us have been impacted by the footage we are witnessing, daily through our news feeds. The images of people huddled on the beaches with terrified children and pets, towns that are hundreds of years old, completely gone and of course the loss of millions of animals. It came home to us in a small way on New Year’s Day when we awoke to the smoke reaching Queenstown and turning our day into a kind of eerie dusk. I spent 30 years living in Australia, a product of a time when Kiwis were almost encouraged to ‘get on’ by moving over the ditch and my time in Australia was incredibly rewarding and I love Australia and its people. Now, to watch these scenes of NSW, SA and Victoria burning and having to endure states of emergencies as the fires link up creating fire fronts that stretch across state borders is truly heartbreaking. When it’s all over, which is likely still months away, there will be a reckoning and Australia is going to be changed forever. No longer will the casual smiling, fun loving, koala hugging images luring us to Australia with a ‘she’ll be right mate’ theme, be believable to the rest of the world. Australia burning has been the story over the holiday period across the globe and graphically brought home what climate change is capable of.

While the devastation is nowhere near over, Australians and Kiwis are pulling together to help; giving money, goods, their homes and their time for those that have lost everything. This last weekend and through the coming weeks the number of fund-raising events being held in Queenstown and throughout the country will gather pace. From lemonade stands put on by the young ones to elaborate events, to people opening their homes, all in aid of raising money to help our Aussie cousins. To see the number spring up in Queenstown and Wanaka has been such an inspiration. There are thousands and thousands who will come through this catastrophe with nothing and the wildlife is in even worse shape and every dollar raised will be welcome. It is times like this that the Tasman Sea disappears as the barrier that separates the two countries and we act as ‘family’ and as a Kiwi who has spent decades in Australia and returned, it’s wonderful to witness our communities spirit and generosity and how we are getting behind efforts to help. Please support these wonderful initiatives raising desperately needed funds for the bush fire victims and to the organisers, thank you and I know Australia thanks you!! Bringing flamenco to Queenstown A New Zealander who’s become renowned for his flamenco music is bringing the quintessentially Spanish genre to Queenstown for the first time. Paul Bosauder grew up in Auckland and, inspired by his musical family, learned guitar and started playing in bands. In his mid-twenties, he travelled to Beirut and was working for a theatre production when he saw a gypsy guitarist play flamenco music. “I was blown away,” he says. “It is such an intimate and powerful form.” Paul says witnessing a live performance of flamenco inspired him to move to Spain to learn all he could about the art form. Flamenco is most commonly associated with the Andalusian Roma (gypsies) of southern Spain, but it is popular across the Mediterranean (and even in some unexpected locations – like Japan). Paul’s now based in Seville, in southern Spain, where he composes and plays a mix of modern and traditional flamenco forms. He’s spent the past decade-and-a-bit studying and practicing, something Paul says is an ongoing process as flamenco is still a growing and changing art form that invites the guitarist to constantly strive to play better. He received Matricula de Honor (the highest mark possible) while completing his studies at ESMUC (Escuela Superior de Musica de Cataluña) and fine-tuned his craft with some of Spain’s best flamenco artists, including maestro Rafael Cañizares. “Rafael is an amazing teacher; he changed how I play and encouraged me to write my own compositions and learn how to create my own language in this big world of flamenco,” says Paul. Though Paul says he still “needs to grow”, audiences around the world have been enthralled by his performances. Such is Paul’s ability to honour the traditions of the music, listeners in Spain are often surprised when Paul speaks (in Spanish) with a Kiwi twang. Paul’s last tour in New Zealand in 2018 sold out and his debut album Tierra y Mar topped the NZ Independent Album charts across all genres. In February (9th, Sherwood Queenstown), he’ll return to New Zealand, this time taking his project to Queenstown. “It’s a mix of traditional flamenco with more modern compositions. There’ll be guitar, singing [Thais Hernandez], percussion [Lito Manez] and an award-winning dancer from Madrid [Triana]. “I’m really proud to get on stage with these people and I’m looking forward to bringing the project to Queenstown.”

To whoever operates and runs Orbus bus company, I have a gripe. Many times I have almost been at the bus stop around 20 metres and I flag you down sprinting but you guys don’t bother stopping ( knowing that I would be there before you actually stop the bus ). Yes this is my fault, HOWEVER I’m always early, back home buses would wait at every stop until it’s time

Happy 2020 everyone! I like the strength and certainty of the way 2020 sounds - fairly certain I won’t be around for 5050 which sounds much more dithery and so-so. Everything about this year feels different - even our lawn which is always a parched brown thing that gets no water and requires no mowing in summer has turned into a luscious emerald shaggy fur. I love looking at it but it’s encouraging our already large rabbit population to have way more sex than usual and there are literally dozens of tiny Lindt chocolate sized bunnies bouncing merrily around. Why can’t someone dream up a profitable way to use them? I love my Allbird shoes - I wonder if I could launch an Allbunnies version? I should suggest it for next year’s Lake Hayes Show - what fun it was this year even though my tiny perfect potatoes didn’t win a prize - the spud section is notoriously challenging. The big thrill was the Fashion in the Field. Josie Waters and Mal Price won first prize and this enormously glamorous couple’s well hung horse, Fallacy, showed us his working parts - everyone in the crowd was transfixed. Visitors to the pavilion got a chance to choose the winner of the brand new “People’s Choice” cup - there were plenty of worthy candidates but the standout was Fineen Hingston’s incredible 16th birthday cake that she made for herself - it’s her birthday any minute and I don’t know how she’ll be able to bear cutting into it - it was two cakes, one a closed book with an old fashioned cover saying Happy Birthday and her own name, and the second one had the book open with a page of text written in icing. When I was her age, I think the full extent of my culinary skills was probably making toast. Well done, Fineen! Hugest congratulations too, to Jennifer Belmont who’s finally become the newest Zealander. Friends in Wanaka keep grumbling at the injustice of the Wakatipu getting all the lovely Americans who create so many opportunities for lucky us - giving us huge farms, creating beautiful lodges and setting up amazing foundations and charitable trusts, while Wanaka’s Americans seem better known for their less lovely doings. Jennifer’s a total star and won a big award for her work in setting up the Wakatipu Community Foundation - she is definitely one American who deserves citizenship here. We are all richer for her being here. So many exciting things in the pipeline - on Jan 18th at 7:30am at Yonder there’s a yoga class fundraiser for the Oz Red Cross and Jane Burdon has artist Jo Bertini coming to do a workshop 11-13 February plus a talk and slideshow about her 3 month stay with the tribal Indians in India to raise money for the Cancer Society.

When aspirations trip up the export/import balance by Simon Davies, President Federated Farmers Otago
Of late I’ve heard several people, including a current Labour MP, question the need for our farmers to produce more food than New Zealand needs for its own consumption. It got me thinking... When I was at high school, which was more than a couple of decades ago, one of my elective courses was economics. At the time, commerce and accountancy were popular choices for careers. I realised after a time, that this was probably not the case for me. However, the course did teach me a few home truths about business. The big take home message was that to remain in business one can only spend as much as one earns. Ideally you want to earn more than you spend, so you can put some “savings” away for a rainy day. Moving forward I have run several different businesses and a couple of farming operations, a food manufacturing and consulting business. I’ve found that basic tenet of economics and trade has very much run true. Most of those businesses were successful, but one was not. The simple truth with the failed venture was that I was spending more than I was earning. As a result, I lost “half my shirt”. This is economics 101. If we were to scale this concept up a little, from a business to New Zealand as a country, the numbers are bigger, but the concept is the same. As a country if we don’t want to lose half our shirt we need to ensure we are earning at least what we are spending, and ideally be able to put a little away for downturns and calamities sometime in the future.

Currently New Zealand earns money overseas by selling goods and services (exports) and selling New Zealand dollars to visitors to spend in this country (international tourism). In the same way New Zealand spends money buying goods and services from overseas (imports). For New Zealand to remain “in business” we need to ensure that our exports and international tourism is greater than our imports. If this is not the case, we must either earn (export) more or spend (import) less. Pastoral agriculture is the largest export earner for New Zealand. Currently there is considerable pressure on the agricultural sector to reduce production. The consequence of this will be less exports and less dollars earned. To balance this New Zealand will either have to earn more from other exports or international tourism or spend less on imports (more directly controllable). Spending less means not buying so many cars, washing machines and iPhones, etc. In very basic terms the annual production of one sheep is approx. 1.3 lambs, and 4kg of wool. Each lamb is worth about $165 and the wool is worth about $2/kg or $8 per sheep. So, for each 1,000 sheep removed from production NZ exports drop by about $222,500 every year – that’s a whole lot of iPhones or imported phamaceuticals. In terms of dairy, each cow returns about $2,700 of returns for milk solids to the farmer each year, never mind the value our processing companies get from adding value and never mind the value of her calves (a grown 300kg bull is worth about $1,860 in meat). You don’t even need to get out your calculator to recognise how quickly export returns mount up at scale.

The recent carbon bill wants to see methane reductions of between 22 and 47%. For its submission on the Zero Carbon Bill Federated Farmers calculated, based on current tools available to farmers, that quantum of reduction represents a loss in processing factory gate income from the dairy and red meat industries by 2050 of $14 billion per annum and climbing. Keep in mind NZ exports 95% of the milk products we produce here, 94% of lamb products and 88% of beef and veal. To ensure the country stays in business, New Zealand must reduce imports by the same amount. So, for those of you who change your iPhone (or any phone for that matter) regularly you need to remember that as our exports fall, the ability to import those phones for you to buy also falls. Perhaps it is worth remembering that all actions result in additional actions and consequences. One consequence for our aspirational goal of zero carbon is the reduced availability/ affordability of everyday items – from iPhones to pharmaceuticals and bananas to batteries.

The only project south of Ashburton on the list so far is between Dunedin and Port Chalmers. The holiday period also highlights we have people who are struggling here in Queenstown, and while Happiness House and other organisations do a fantastic job the bigger issue is the costof-living. I continue to advocate for zoning changes for the accommodation supplement here in Queenstown. Shotover Country and Lakes Hayes Estate are in no way rural, and the rezoning would mean more money from rent for those who need it most. More and more people are using the track daily. In December I walked to the top of the summit to see how bad the problem is. It was heart-wrenching seeing the amount of toilet paper strewn off the side of the track, but it also made it clear a toilet is needed. The next day I took the trek again with a bag and pick-up stick and filled a couple of disposable bags with toilet paper. Thirty-five thousand people use the track annually, doubling in the last four to five years. We need a toilet on the saddle as soon as possible. As we start to head in to the swing of things for 2020, I wish you all the best for this year. For those of you finally getting a break after the silly season, enjoy – you deserve it. ALTRUSA’S ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF DAY|Kelvin
Heights Golf Course, Kelvin Heights, Sunday The amazing Altrusa ladies were at it again last weekend; this time raising money for St John’s at their annual charity golf day. The charity golf day has been running since 1991, so far raising $160,000 for the community. This year’s event saw 115 golfers raise $13,000 for St John’s and $1500 for Wakatipu Junior Golf. David Johns of Arrowtown was the overall winner and Sarron Payne of Queenstown took out the ladies' competition.

We will experience some shining examples of S. Australian wine, profits will be donated to support CFS, S. Australian Country Fire Service. It has been heartbreaking to watch, to hear and to read the stories of destruction as a result of the Cudlee Creek fires just before Christmas and the rest of Australia on fire for the last couple of months. We are in awe of all the fire fighters and emergency services who have risked their lives and worked tirelessly during this tragedy. Many wine grape growers have been affected by the fire, as well as apple and pear growers. Tilbrook Wines has been destroyed, Vinteloper Wines lost nearly everything, while Golding Wines, Barristers Block, Beal & Co, Simon Tolley Wines, New Era Vineyards and Emmeline Wines have also had significant damage. Other wineries that were affected include Anderson Hill, Artwine, Bird in Hand, Geoff Weaver, Henschke Wines, Nova Vita Wines, Petaluma, Tomich Wines and Turon Wines. I spent two years in Australia before I settled in NZ. In 2017, I was invited to visit Australia by Wine Australia, an experience that I will cherish forever. I would like to do my little bit to support the Australian Country Fire Service, to keep battling the destructive blaze. Please join me! We will be tasting a range of Australian wine. Best – My best friend kidnapped me on my birthday and made me wear a funky suit which afterwards led to me doing a bungy twice off the ledge looking like superwoman! Who is your inspiration? Norma Jeane Mortenson aka Marilyn Monroe – because she was considered one of the most beautiful woman in the world. She embraced her curves, had lots of confidence and didn’t care about being super skinny like society expects from girls nowadays. She was herself, what an inspiration!
