Preparing for an emergency. We’ve had excellent weather for ducks recently with rain, a bit more rain, followed by a slight reprieve with a truck load of rain. Twenty years ago, a similar thing happened – but the rain kept pouring until the rivers broke their banks, the lake flooded and locals could kayak down the Mall. Though it was devastating back then, I’d hate to think what it might be like if a similar thing happened now. In 1999, the Queenstown Lakes population (including Wanaka) was around 17,000, now this figure is around 39,000. This doesn’t include the three million annual visitors, many of whom would probably find being in an unfamiliar town (for some, with an unfamiliar language) during an emergency scary and confusing. For residents, it’s best to be prepared. Climate change is happening and scientists have predicted more significant weather events from dramatic storms to dramatic droughts. Thinking about the bushfires in Australia to the monster hailstorm of Timaru, it’s safest to say we should expect the unexpected. Add to all of this the fact that we’re sitting near the Alpine Fault – a 600km fault line which runs up the spine of the South Island. It’s ruptured four times in the past 900 years and is overdue for another – it’s not a question of if, but when. Tsunamis, landslides and the destruction of major roads are all realistic scenarios. All of this is hard to imagine when the sun is shining and the lake is just a wee bit higher than normal. Thinking about what could happen isn’t about scaremongering or doom-and-gloom scenarios. It’s about taking a few minutes to ensure that if you’re in town when something happens, you’re prepared. So, if you’re here for a few months, or have been around a few decades, take some time this week to make sure your emergency kit; a) exists, b) has everything you’ll need, c) isn’t full of out of date or mouldy food (yucky food is the last thing you’ll want to nibble on during an emergency). The government recommends having supplies for at least three days – this should include food and water for all the family including pets, as well as the means to cook the food (a primus or gas camping stove). A radio and a torch with spare batteries are essential as are sleeping bags, a first aid kit (with your essential medications), and wind and waterproof clothing. You’ll also need some large bin bags to serve as an emergency toilet – don’t expect your loo to flush after an earthquake nor should you rely on your mobile phone to work, as per the Spark outage a couple of weeks ago. Monthly Column Festive greetings and happy holidays – well almost. With Christmas now a week away I hope you are all managing to take some time out to spend with loved ones. Recently, I had an early Christmas, hosting my wider-family at my home here in Queenstown. Here in Queenstown, the holiday period brings with it one of the busiest times of the year. A massive thank you to all of you working in the emergency services, hospitality, public transport, retail and other sectors which keep the town going through this period. I hope you too manage a break at some stage. As 2019 comes to an end it has been a year full of achievements. I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support this year and for sharing your highs and lows with me. I have assisted more than 500 constituent cases in my Queenstown office this year. Every case is unique and I’ve done all I can to get the best result for each of you. We’ve had some great successes in some cases – immigration proves to be one of the biggest issues here in Queenstown. However, it is cases like that of Juliana Costa which make my job as your MP incredibly worthwhile. Like many people who make Queenstown their home, Juliana contributes immensely to our community and I’m thrilled we succeeded in getting her two-year open work visa. The bigger problem is visa processing times, as 13 out of the 14 major visa category visa applications are still taking longer to be processed than under the previous National-led government. I want to assure you I continue to lobby for better services here in Queenstown. This year also brought with it the Parliamentary Rugby Team, as I hosted a match between them and the late Blair Vining’s invitational team here in April. We managed to raise almost $15,000 for Garston School for their new school bus seat belts and the Blair Vining Sports Foundation. We lost Blair recently, and while he may be gone, his legacy in achieving better cancer care for all New Zealanders will live on. It was incredible to see so much wonderful support for this event – a massive thank you again to all of you who got on board. My private member’s bill became law this year, putting foster children on an even playing field, as any foster parent (or kin carer) can approach a KiwiSaver provider to open a KiwiSaver account for a foster child in their care. We also secured a new independent hospital here in Queenstown, which I had been advocating for since first elected, and also opened a new emergency department at the current hospital. I’m also still urging for rezoning in the accommodation supplement space. We’ve had many smiles and plenty of good news in 2019 and I already can’t wait to see what 2020 delivers. Again, happy holidays and I can’t wait to work with you and for you in 2020.

Top 5 moans about a Kiwi Christmas

I W Long time reader first time writer, the basis of

my whinge comes from those whom have come to make NZ their temporary or permanent home. I’m born and bred in Aotearoa and have never experienced a Xmas other than what I know. Hot, warm, sunny, long evening Xmas’s, on the beach, backyard cricket, touch rugby, sunburn, rosé, suntan, that’s all I know and I love it. As of late, the amount of moaning and groaning from anyone north of the equator is nothing more than negativity. Why is it not Xmas? Or why it’s different or not right? Top 5 moans I hear on a daily basis more than once a day both at work and also from friends are: 1. It’s to hot to be Xmas this isn’t right. Answer: It’s absolutely right in NZ, also once the big day is over I’m sure you enjoy the long evenings and warmish weather for the other 59 days. 2. Kiwis don’t get into the Xmas spirit and don’t do Xmas very well. Answer: Not sure what ‘well’ is but I have tons of fun opening presents with my son and enjoy the over indulging.

3. It just doesn’t feel like Xmas here. Answer: Well you can always go to a place that feels like Xmas. Ps. It’s only 1 day out of 365. 4. You cant even see the Xmas lights at night cause it doesn’t get dark till late. Answer: OMG. 5. You need to go to the UK/USA/Canada, etc... and experience a Christmas there. Then you’ll see what a real Xmas is. Answer: People travel to experience new things, not the same things, so before throwing out shades of negativity, think of those that believe that Santa Clause rode in on a surf board instead of a sleigh, I know it’s not the all out full banged up Xmas a lot of people are used to, but this is Aotearoa and it’s how we do it! So, crank out the rakuraku (guitar), sing a few waiata (Te Iwi E) and embrace our differences which is what makes NZ so special. Mauri Ora Whanau. Kiwi Christmas is the best.

AirBnB is killing this town I know, I know, you’re a homeowner and you’re entitled to do what you want with said home. And in most municipalities that is an entirely fair statement. What isn’t fair is the proliferation of AirBnB listings, and the flouting of local legislation regarding the volume said listing is allowed to be, well, listed. On a per capita basis, we have some of highest quantities of AirBnB’s listed, coupled with the highest quantities of entire houses listed. It is this situation that results in, significantly higher rental prices, and significantly higher housing prices, based off the higher yield the seller can show. We have a finite number of dwellings available for the significant number in the working population, who are being readily displaced because the average homeowner can get a higher return from listing their house as a holiday let. Now I know local government has implemented rules regarding nightly volumes, but without a watchdog in place to actually enforce this, what is actually stopping anyone? I personally know many people who aren’t abiding by these rules, and have been doing so for years. So now you’ve got a working population that has to pay higher rental prices, because those who haven’t holidaylet their dwellings can increase rental expectation of the supply and demand situation that is left in the rental pool available. This also impacts local businesses, who either cannot find staff - as people simply don’t want to pay the living costs (see all the job vacancy listings for proof) - or

they have to add higher wages/training to ever increasing costs, that don’t necessarily couple with ever-increasing revenue. Finally you’ve got the houses themselves that consistently rank as the most expensive in the country. This is in part because the yield has been increased, so instead of a reasonable return on investment, some are netting obscene amounts - I’ve personally heard of return so high on an average dwelling that they should really be listed for GST. But really, no one is doing anything ‘wrong’, because they have all been technically allowed to do so. So in the end it’s not actually AirBnB hosts or the service itself that is the issue, it’s the local government and their apparent willingness to sit ideally by while it all happens. Maybe we did need AirBnB a few years ago because we were apparently terrified of being branded as ‘full’, but now that hotel developments have just about caught up, and visitor numbers have stabilized, is it not time to address this? We need to invest in our local economy by realising the significant social issues being exacerbated on a ‘make hay while the sun shines’ philosophy, and a quick fix for the mean time would be a crackdown on listing volumes and nights allowed. This would let rental prices exceed or match the return from holiday letting, and bring the market back to order. Yes, some who have extended themselves beyond their means based on AirBnB return would hurt, but surely that’s better than the whole town hurting? Badbnb

Lime Scooter Column debate • Queenstown is too small for this. Too many people walking around and the roads aren’t wide enough for cars and these to be scooting around traffic. • I think it’s a great idea but with some footpaths not sealed it means gravel accidents are just waiting to happen. Fantastic idea for tourists and a great way for locals to get around. • Better for the environment than cars or diesel buses for those short hops around town. Bring’em on I say. • Buy a green bike... • I reckon if they trial 400 of them you’ll be fishing at least 350 out of the lake within a month... • The other 50 will break or will end up in Gore... • Anyone going to mention our Topography? • They don’t climb steep hills, they hurt a lot of people on downhills in towns less steep than ours. • I love using the scooters... in Dunedin or Christchurch, BUT Queenstown is too small, with too much foot traffic on the pavements, not to mention too many steep hills. A trial maybe, but not one with no take backs!! I think currently the cost of injuries & ACC claims outweigh the benefits... & there are a lot of stupid, drunk people in Qtn. • Ask the medical centre if they have enough staff to cope with the injuries the answer will be No!!!

Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting Public Forum on 12th December 2019

From Lime e-scooters to 5G, democracy to climate change, the public forum at last week’s council meeting a jam-packed. Mayor Jim Boult welcomed everyone and stated that each person had three minutes to speak, in the interests of giving everyone an opportunity to have their say. Twenty-one people had registered to speak, which Mayor Boult said “could be a record.” LWB went along to see what the community had to say…

First up was Peter Newport, editor and director of Crux. “I’m speaking as a journalist ,” he said, highlighting a ‘media crisis’, particularly in the regions as international giants like Facebook and Google sucked up advertising revenue and sales teams were prioritised over journalists. He suggests Council look at ways to fund media support and training programmes.

Two local residents spoke about climate change. A representative from Extinction Rebellion asked that Council become active participants in slowing climate change, while another resident argued that Council looked at claims by ‘climate alarmists’ with scepticism.

Greg Miller of the Kelvin Peninsular Community Association said he’d tried and loved the scooters in other cities… but “they’re not for [Queenstown].” Chamber of Commerce CEO Anna Mickell questioned Lime’s ability to staff the business, given the struggles of others in the region to ﬁnd accommodation for team members. She said she’d tried e-scooters in other cities and there “are better options out there,” including some e-scooter brands which may be able to tackle Queenstown’s varied terrain. “Don’t give up on this […] but put it out to the market,” was her message. Council later voted to go ahead with the Lime e-scooter trial, with a delayed start date of April 2020.

The Queenstown Airport Corporation’s revised Statement of Intent (SOI) was accepted by Council with some restrictions, plus a QLDC steering group was set up to develop the SOI.

BUILDING CODES Local resident Michael Clark asked Council to examine the strength of the building code. He reminded the council of extreme winters past – in 1850, 1940 in Otago and of the extreme snowfall several countries in the northern hemisphere are experiencing this year. He also added that if the recent storms had happened in winter, local buildings would need to withstand a lot of snowfall.

5G 5G was another hot topic at the meeting. Nelson lawyer Sue Grey said that “5G is a matter that nobody knows much about,” and went on to stress that more scientiﬁc research should be done before it’s rolled out. She also suggested that not everyone needs the download speeds 5G enables, so perhaps those who did need it could access it in certain places, but the technology should not be rolled out everywhere. Wayne Foley, who said he’d sponsored Sue to visit Queenstown, suggested that the council puts together a sub-committee, to show that they are “asking questions” on the topic. Georgia Todd and Sheree Horomona talked about the impact 5G could have on families. Georgia said she was “a lack of health and safety at its most basic,” while Sheree spoke of the effect her family and pets were already feeling from the eleven towers near her home in Frankton. Jim Boult ﬁnished the discussion by stressing that the “only input [Council] have is resource consent […] but we will take it on board.”

Arts+Culture Christmas Mince, Sugar Plum Pies A Ballerina’s insight into The Remarkable Men’s Ballet. Local councillor and radio announcer, Craig ‘Ferg’ Ferguson, has been a regular dancer for the popular men’s troupe. He’s clocked in (roughly) 12 years. “They nicked named me ‘G’, the general. I guess it’s to do with longevity.” Their 2 minute set has always been a crowd favourite at the annual Queenstown Christmas Show.

What’s Happening ART. Double Exhibition Artbay is hosting two exhibitions at once. Wander between two galleries. Front Room will display the new sculpture collection from Simon Max Bannister. Upstairs above Louis Vuitton will feature paintings from internationally acclaimed artist Ilya Volykhine. When: Where:

“Jaw’s drop. ‘Ohhh the men’s ballet!’” The attraction to join the troupe stemmed from Ferguson’s household dance activities. “I have 2 daughters, 24 and 21 now, and they were very good dancers in their younger days. My wife was from a dancing background. I guess the girls have always got their dancing abilities from their mother, but I just wanted to prove to them that actually, it could’ve been from Dad.” The group of 10 dancers allocate five weeks to squeeze in 8 rehearsals and a Friday Flash Mob before the big show. Anna Stuart, choreographs and directs the men. “Some of the steps are proving a bit of a handful.” says Ferg. They’ve all signed up to a private Whatsapp group. Rehearsals are videoed and uploaded for them to practice at home. “It’s a pretty slick operation if you can’t make the rehearsal.” he adds. The group has gotten so popular that they’ve performed outside of the Christmas realms. At Winter festival they staged a Lion King performance and last year a belly dancing troupe was formed for the Arrowtown Autumn Festival. The commradery and enthusiasm among the mix of local ‘mincers’ is undoubtedly strong.

Ferg provided us with this review. “A stunning, technical performance that will probably revival Tour Benildean - Which means we’re not gonna be anything like that.”

Art News The banana saga from Art Basel Miami Beach has been causing a social frenzy in the art world. The recent show exhibits 250 emerging artist from around the globe and one installation went BANANAS! A banana simply duct taped to the wall sold for a whooping $120,000! In fact, 3 buyers brought the banana, one paid $150,000. On day two of the exhibition performance artist, David Datuna, went a step further and ate the banana - the display was shortly taken down. Artist and absurdist of Duct Tape Banana, Marizio Cattelan, called this piece the Comedian. Cattelan explored the process of conceptual art. Originally, he was wanting to make a sculpture of the banana. He would travel with a banana and tape it to the wall to visualize it. He made several models from resin and bronze to then fall back on the initial idea of a real banana! While critics struggle with the fact that a seven year old kid could do this, others are hailing it as the ‘unicorn of the art world’. So what were they purchasing? A rotting banana? Essentially the buyers brought the idea oppose to the actual object. In the words of Warhol ‘Art is whatever you can get away with’.

She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. There’s nothing more exciting than a phone call from a London based daughter saying she’s suddenly had enough of rainy, cold Britain and needs some sunshine and is arriving in 48 hours. Not sure the weather here is going to be a vast improvement, but her arrival is certainly making me forget what the weather is doing. One thing I won’t forget is that every time there’s big rain like this, poor old Lake Hayes gets another huge dollop of nutrients from all the land that’s been disturbed upstream of it. On Saturday afternoon I was sunning myself outside a very glam safari tent while all my energetic bookclub friends went biking down the Clutha river trail almost making me feel guilty about my slothful ways. Cath and Matt Hanna, the much loved and much missed founders of Joe’s Garage are now running the Camp at Lake Hawea and putting their famous flair and energy into making it a destination everyone will head to. Shhh…. Matt is opening a coffee caravan there next week making his fabulous coffee with Al Brown’s new coffee brand called “Good Joe’s”. While the Hannas are the real reason we’ve come here for our Christmas get together, there’s another important reason to head over the hill - Albert Town now boasts a very fine French bakery. While their pies don’t quite measure up to the dangerously high standard of Fergbaker and Arrowtown Bakery, their baguettes and custard square are spectacular and I’m having greedy thoughts about calling in again on the way home. I’m not the only greedy bird around - I saw my red hot pokers swinging around madly and went to investigate, A very energetic tui was busy sucking all the nectar out of their bright orange petals (are they called petals?) and shrieking with delight. There’s also a pair of courting tuis up Tobins Track - it’s been a long courtship and they are racing after each other all the time and one of them (I’m guessing the male) is singing her a lovesong that sounds suspiciously like a car’s backing beeps or the noise the fridge door makes when you leave it open. Not sounds that make me feel desperately romantic, but then I’m not a tui. When my darling leaves the fridge door open, I tend to snarl and swear rather than swoon.

Competitive polo returns this month as Queenstown Polo Club opens its gates for the NZSIR Silver Cup on the evening of Friday December 20th and the afternoon of Saturday 21st.
