What does music mean for a child’s education? We all know music is important for kids’ education, but what does it really mean? I was having a coffee the other day in a coffee shop when a lady approached me: “Are you the local piano teacher?” Surprised, but then again – it’s still a small town, I said yes and asked her to join me. She told me about her childhood and how music lessons had such a huge impact on her. She had a wonderful fantastic teacher, her parents were very supportive and she loved it! Unfortunately, in her teen years, she gave up music and it is one of her big regrets. She told me she now has a four-yearold daughter, whom she is encouraging to start piano lessons. So many times I’ve heard stories like this; “I wish my parents kept me accountable / I wish I never gave up that instrument I enjoyed playing/ I wish I could come back to playing it now”. As we become adults, we often look back with fond memories of those times as children when we were creative and expressed ourselves through a hobby like music or sport. Hopefully, this lady comes back to piano one day. I would love to help her enjoy her music again and join our group of adult budding pianists of all different levels. As a piano teacher, every day I see the endless benefits music brings on so many different levels. Learning an instrument teaches us to be committed, dedicated, patient, persistent. It’s a wonderful workout for our brain and is proven to boost memory function. From a physical point of view – it helps improve our fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Seeing children setting, working towards and achieving their goals gives me huge satisfaction! I give young students I work with the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. I know from my own experiences that regular performance opportunities increase confidence and comfort levels on stage no end. It makes the hours of practice worthwhile for them and nerves are often replaced with feeling of satisfaction, pride and joy. Some of our young students now have so much confidence that they have MC’d our last couple concerts. It is something special to see children grow out of their comfort zone, their confidence skyrocketing and the delight in their faces! I have learned over the past few years that there is so much potential in children which can be seen when they are given a supportive environment to shine. Everyone needs to experience the happiness and joy that music brings to all the generations, it is something absolutely special and I am really glad that our Wakatipu community appreciates all the work and effort put into artistic education. We all want to share music especially this time of the year – let’s get together and experience joy of music this Christmas at the Christmas Piano Concert this Saturday starting at 3pm, Queenstown Contemporary Art Gallery, Five Mile – it would be a great chance to enjoy the community spirit together. A thriving insect, bee and bird population helps our gardens and the local biome flourish. Like it or not, without the creepy crawlies life on earth ain’t fun. Positive ecosystem actions could include a mass planting of comfrey in a disused corner, a row of lavender, or creating an insect hotel. There’s good insects (bees, parasitic wasps, ladybirds…) and bad insects (aphids, slugs, white cabbage butterfly…). Some cause havoc and require a little intervention from time to time, but if you have an infestation of ‘bad bugs’ the ‘good bugs’ usually aren’t far behind. In a garden with a good mixture of flowers and shrubs you shouldn’t have to worry too much about insect attacks. Nature balances itself out. The so-called ‘bad bugs’ are clearing up weak plants just as nature intended. As well as planting a diverse, insect-friendly plot, remember to feed and grow the life under your feet. The more robust and alive your soil is, the healthier your plants will be. Regular applications of compost promote healthy, thriving soil life. Liquid seaweed is a ‘silver bullet’ for the garden, supplying minerals and micro nutrients to help you grow healthier plants. I recommend using a seaweed foliar spray once every one to two weeks. Encourage hard-working birds, frogs and skinks too; they gobble up insects we don’t like and birds poop top-quality fertiliser.

Top Tips Edible flowers. Create a central bed devoted to bee-friendly and edible flowers (think borage, chives, marigold, strawberry, pansies, nasturtium, fennel and lavender).

Perennial herbs. Perennial herbs are great for year-round diversity (think thyme, rosemary, artichoke, lemon balm, oregano).

Insect Hotel. Create an insect hotel by tying up bundles of branches left after pruning and tuck them under a tree or shrub. Pond. Create a small pond to attract some frogs and add a few rocks for skinks to sunbathe on. Stay Spray Free. Keep your property spray free. Glyphosates, pesticides and fungicides create more problems for your garden.

RE: A ferry good discussion

have been using the ferry service every day to commute to work since the changed service launched with Go Orange last year. Amazing service that is faster than driving to town, more convenient, more relaxing and hassle free. More Kelvin Heights locals need to support this service. Bay view has free 12hour parking and plenty of it, it is also right on the trail to be able to bike or walk along the lake to get to

the jetty. The bus takes forever when connecting from Frankton to town and the schedule is not lined up properly to get commuters to town at the right time of day. Not great at all. We need people out of their cars and to encourage more use of our biggest resource. The Lake!

Ridiculous riddle un-rigourous! It’s clever to pace the travellers so their time on the hill has the same average speed for the duration as their flat travel. They are twice as fast coming down in half the time as going up so the average over time is ( 2t x 3kph + 1t x 6kph )/3t= 4kph, it does not change with time t. Time of travel is 6 hours so total distance is 6x4kph = 24 miles. It doesn’t matter how far the top of the hill is so long as they get there in 3 to 4 hours. If there was no hill they get to the middle in 3 hrs, 3hrs back. If it was all hill they get to the top in 4 hrs and

I’m still chasing up the cemetery issue and have discovered that some forward thinking councils around the country have created very green cemeteries - you can be buried and have a tree planted on top of you but only if choose not to be embalmed (the embalming fluid stops bodies rotting) and you are buried at a much shallower depth so that you become compost much more quickly. These green cemeteries have become more and more popular, and it might be time for us to start having one here too.

Onto cheerier things… the Wakatipu is so lucky to have so many very generous people living here who think of ways that combine doing good with having a lot of fun. Tom Pryde is one of the greatest. Apparently he’s pretending to retire from law, but with all that spare time on his hands, no doubt the community is going to benefit even more. There’s barely a sport that hasn’t been boosted by his energy among many of his dozens of projects (literally dozens!) he got the Hump Ridge track started, launched the Motutapu, even made it possible for us all to stay at Paradise while still alive!! The man’s a genius and there was a huge crowd at his retirement party.

And for another story of generosity, superchef at Auckland’s three hat restaurant “The Grove” Ben Bayly (he’s also the executive chef at Aosta in Arrowtown) donated a dinner for ten at a fundraiser for the Kate Moetaua Foundation. It was set up in memory of the much loved Wakatipu High School drama teacher to support aspiring young artists and sports people. I managed to wangle an invitation - lucky me! There was even a fabulous band warming up as we arrived - it transpired they were WHS students who had also given up their Saturday night to play for us. We all had a sensational meal, the band seemed to be having a great time, Ben Bayly and his team gave no hint that they weren’t enjoying themselves, the charity earned loads of money and eight local kids are getting some very handy cash injections to help with their sporting and artistic endeavours - a total win win for everyone!

Mountains for mental health You might have spotted local runner James Harcombe jogging around the basin last month. The ultra runner braved changeable weather and scaled mountains in an attempt to complete 100,00 feet of vertical distance during the month of November. We sent him a few questions to find out how it went and why he did it… What has been your best moment on the trail? Best day so far has been circumnavigating the Wakatipu basin through the mountains. It’s a mission I’ve been planning for a while. It ended up being 159km with 8020m of vertical. Took me 35.5 hours all up, and the second half I was able to share with my longtime partner in missions, Becky Nixon. The terrain was as varied as the weather! I tried to follow the ridgeline wherever possible – an overnight storm caused my only detour. …and the worst? I never really have bad moments on the trail. I try to find the enjoyment in every circumstance, however, one day I did summit Ben Lomond four times, and on the third ascent I was caught in a blizzard. Conditions were pretty wild and very un-seasonal! Possibly the funniest moment was listening to Becky telling a friend on the phone that she’d be fine for dinner on Sunday because she’d had “at least two minutes’ sleep” the night before! Ultra running is a strange sport... Anybody you’d like to thank? I’d like to thank everyone who’s contributed to the cause so far (or who’s about to contribute!). I’d also like to thank my amazing wife and family for putting up with my crazy antics, and for supporting me through all these years! I was inspired to do the challenge in order to help my good mate and adventure buddy Mal Law raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. He’s attempting to raise $100k this year by climbing one million feet of vertical. It’s a charity that’s close to both of our hearts. For me, it’s because I’ve lost four friends and family members to suicide over the years, all of whom had played inspirational roles in my life. People who seemed to have everything going for them, yet all of whom had severe depression and who clearly felt unable to reach out for help. The Mental Health Foundation prides themselves in being the ‘ambulance at the top of the cliff’. They’re all about being proactive in developing life strategies to prevent mental illness. They’re also big on connecting in the outdoors - something that’s been essential over the years for my own mental health. How many people are involved in the challenge? Currently eight others, plus Mal and myself. Everyone’s welcome to join in the fun though. [Find out more at mentalhealth.org.nz/ fundraisers/Mal—s—Helpers] What were the ‘rules’ of your challenge? How did you find it? No ‘rules’, just the goal of climbing 100k feet for the month of November by foot (run, walk, climb, crawl!). I’ve been measuring with my GPS watch, and all the days are available to view on my Strava profile. It’s the total elevation that counts, so I’ve been doing five days of vertical and two of rest. The original goal I set was because Mal had to average about 835metres a day for his target, so I added a little extra to make up for the fact that I only have to do it for a month! It’s been surprisingly difficult. You take two rest days, and are immediately 2000 metres behind schedule. The next day then has to be above and beyond the roughly 1000m’s a day just to catch up. What Mal’s managed to achieve has been quite amazing (he’s currently only 2 days behind schedule!).

Two local students selected to represent 13.5x2 NZ at Winter Youth Olympics by Bethany Rogers

Two local ice hockey athletes have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games held in Switzerland and France. 15-year-old Tallulah Bryant (Ngāti Kahungunu) and 14-year-old Axel Ruski-Jones will join the New Zealand Team at the games in January. The Wakatipu High School students will complete in mixed nation teams, meaning they won’t play as a national team but will play alongside other young athletes from around the world. Ice hockey team administrator Darren Blong said it is a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for the athletes. “Our athletes will be competitive but it’s also important they enjoy the experience, build relationships and learn a lot while they’re over there,” said Darren. He added that Axel is a “skilled playmaker” and that Tallulah and fellow athlete Katya Blong (Ontario Hockey Academy), “grew up playing with boys so they’re aggressive players who are hungry to win.” Tallulah Bryant has worked hard to gain her place in the team, spending a significant amount of time on the ice. She started playing six years

ago, switching from ski racing, as she thought it looked fun. Since then, she’s spent many hours at the Queenstown Ice Arena and has played in tournaments in Adelaide (Australia), Minnesota (USA) and Vancouver (Canada). She spent last season playing with the Southern Women’s team. “I practice in the rink all the time, in the mornings I do skills over and over again and then I play as many games as possible,” she says. “I wanted to go to the Winter Youth Olympic Games because I thought it’d be a cool experience and an opportunity to learn off some of the best athletes in the world. I’m really stoked to get in. “It’s going to be full on, there’s a lot of games in a short amount of time but I’m really looking forward to it. It’ll be great because it’s so international.” The tournament will be contested by eight teams in both the men’s and women’s division. Around 20 New Zealand athletes will complete at Lausanne 2020. Eleven athletes competed at the previous Winter Youth Olympic Games and four of those went on to complete at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Arts+Culture Remarkably Funny’s Aspiring virgins Queenstown’s regular comedy night is branching out into Wanaka. Comedian and MC Darren A. Hill, who assists in organising the regular Remarkably Funny comedy events, says he hopes it’ll “be the first of many”. “We’ve been looking to get into Wanaka for a while, then Mint Bar got in touch. We’re really excited about it.” ‘Remarkably Funny presents: Stand up virgins’ is a competition for firsttime comedians. Darren says such events are never a failure because each comedian’s goal is achieved from the moment they speak into the microphone. “For some, it’ll be a one-off event, something they just wanted to try. For others, it may be the first of many. Either way, the crowd is usually great, people are very receptive to first-timers.” Darren will MC the evening. Originally from Scotland, he’s lived in Queenstown on and off for 20 years and is a veteran performer, regularly appearing on comedy stages across New Zealand and the USA for the past 10 years. “My dad was a comedian for a living. Obviously, one day I was going to do it too… In the States, it was a way of living. I signed up to an open mic night in Sacramento and it was very supportive.” Darren says he’d been dreaming of starting a similar open mic group in Queenstown for some time, when Tim Muller reached out. The pair now run the Remarkably Funny Comedy Trust, which organises comedy events, open mic nights and a comedy writing group. “We’ve been best buds – or enemies – ever since. Tim’s the organisational arm. He LOVES admin… I’m the ‘Creative Director’.” The regular comedy nights have enabled Darren to work on his MCing skills – something some comedians shy away from for fear of being typecast. “I’ve absolutely fallen in love with MC’ing. Art News Actor’s unexpected fourth wall break Mark Hadlow is being hailed a hero after an unexpected ‘fourth wall break’ to help an audience member. Ten minutes into a performance of the long-running solo show MAMiL (Middle Aged Man in Lycra), at Palmerston North’s Centrepoint, Mark Hadlow calmly leapt off stage and into the audience. He’d spotted a woman slumped in her seat, not responding to the person next to her. Mark asked for the lights to be raised and a doctor within the audience came forward to assist. The actor kept the audience entertained while emergency services tended to the woman. Once she was safely in the ambulance, everyone returned to the theatre and Mark resumed the show from where he’d left off.

‘Alice in Wonderland’ Review by Who the funk is Alice?

I slipped in through the side gate at Akarua Wines and Kitchen by Artisan and was immediately accosted by Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee. They told me they were bouncers (queue some belly-bouncing) and shook my hand for four minutes, shouting nonsense all the while, before telling me I had to enter down the rabbit hole. At the entrance to the rabbit hole, I was handed a small bottle labelled ‘drink me’, in it was Akarua’s fresh and floral rose from its 25 Steps vineyard. Once down the rabbit hole, I was measured for a hat by the mad hatter and the Queen of Hearts kindly offered to behead my companion. A fairy was creating giant bubbles and a pianist was accompanied by an ad-hoc operatic singer (Margaret O’Hanlon in a fantastic wig). Guests nibbled at ‘eat me’ treats from the Mad Hatter’s tea party spread. This was the launch of Akarua’s 25 Steps Pinot Noir and Artbay Gallery’s 15th birthday party. Some of New Zealand’s most creative artists had painted artworks especially for the event; Jasmine Middlebrook’s wide-brushed depiction of Alice with a white rabbit was a surprising but beautiful departure from the artist’s usual style. Ilya Volykhine’s Mad Hatter’s Party was another stand-out piece, with a Cheshire cat who looked like he’d got the cream, all painted on top of handwritten letters from the artist’s mother. Then there was Michelle Clarke’s giant hare sculpture, which looked great in Akarua’s garden setting. Ta-Dah did the fantastic event styling and there was brilliant collaboration between Flame Entertainment, local actors like Blaise Barham and a number of others who were too hard to recognise under the elaborate face-paint and costumes (I’m told this was Charlotte Graf’s magic).
