Leaving a legacy in the local community is a huge part of the Air New Zealand Queenstown International Marathon and it is often through the interaction with volunteers that the community benefits most, long after the event has wrapped up for another year.

In the five-year history of the event, community groups have benefited to the tune of $65,000 and it is that collaborative approach that motivates many of the volunteers to return year upon year to deliver a wonderful experience for the thousands of visitors to the region.

Andi ‘P’ is one of those amazing local volunteers, the Alpine Health and Fitness Gym trainer has managed Aid Station 10 for every Queenstown Marathon and will once again be there to enhance the experience for the thousands who will run, jog and walk past her team.

“It is a way for everyone to be involved in the event and give back, to strengthen those ties between the event and the community. And because I work in the fitness community but don’t have time to train, I still want to be part of the event, so it is a way for me to support the fitness community without having to train.

Queenstown’s Columb family celebrated 30 years of Off Road Adventures with a party at the Wakatipu Rugby Club on Saturday.

“I teach a class for over 65’s and this is a huge way for them to be involved and not have to do anything too physical. I have a core group of volunteers that return each year, it is great for them, they know a lot of the runners and the flip side is the runners love hearing familiar voices shout out their names.”

The groups engaged with the race in 2019 are set to receive $20,000 dollars in support: Queenstown Scouts, Arrowtown Cubs, WHS Aspen Fundraising, Queenstown Tennis Club, Queenstown Pedallers, WHS Touch, WHS Volleyball, SIT, Alpine Fitness, Queenstown Tennis Club, Cancer Society, WHS Netball Club, WHS Senior Basketball, CAB, Wakatipu Rowing Club, Wakatipu Rangers, Queenstown Preschool and Nursery, Queenstown Community Patrol, Queenstown Gymnastics Club, and the Inner Wheel who will look after traffic marshalling.

Many of the relationships are long term and are crucial to the supply of volunteers that makes the event possible.

It is extremely important for us to not pay lip-service to our volunteers; they are the lifeblood of the event industry. People lead busy lives and increasingly have limited time available, so it is important the relationship delivers a return to the community groups and clubs that they represent, putting a measurable value on their contribution.

Things you didn’t know you could compost

Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill.

Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com We throw so much away into landfill. It’s a big problem that we’re now having to face. Organic matter doesn’t break down easily in landfill as there’s not enough oxygen for the bacteria to work their usual magic – it undergoes anaerobic decomposition instead and produces methane.

Methane is a fire hazard and it’s a potent greenhouse gas.

Not good!

If you’ve got space to compost, do it. This is a fantastic way to divert matter away from landfill AND it’s a fantastic resource for growing veggies and other plants. While carrot tops and grass clippings are standard compost fodder, here’s four other things that can go into your compost heap: Bones.

Bury and let decompose slowly. They can also be added to a bokashi bucket. Or, if you’ve got a wood burner, pop the bones in your fire and use the ash in the veggie garden. It’s a great way to capture all those minerals.

Eggshells.

It’s best to roast eggshells in your oven or fireplace before grinding them down and sprinkling them into your compost or wherever your soil needs a calcium boost. I like to collect lots of eggshells and roast them all at once.

Urine.

We’re peeing a great resource all day! Urine is a free fertiliser. Collect in a bucket, dilute it in a watering can and use around your veggies and fruit trees.

Top tip: don’t store urine for too long as it will start to pong.

Cardboard.

Brown cardboard can be used in pathways to stop weeds growing. We can also use it on beds where we have a bed of larger veggies growing as a surface mulch. Place brown cardboard over the veggie bed, weight it down where needed, make good sized holes and plant your seedlings.

Tiger’s ex-caddy Steve Williams and WRC rally star Hayden Paddon scorching speedway clay

by Ross Lindsay It doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict that next Thursday, November 21, will be a night you won’t want to miss at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell. Because from 5pm you’ll not only get to marvel as the world’s fastest golf caddy Steve Williams getting sideways but also be among the country’s first to witness NZ rally star Hayden Paddon demo the Crosskart, a new class of dirt racer he’s introducing to New Zealand. To further tweak your excitement meter, Hayden will also be competing in his first ever race at the wheel of a 900 plus horsepower sprint car.

Tiger’s ex-caddy Steve Williams is racing at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway as organiser/ competitor of the 2019 Holden Trade Club Saloon Speedweek, arguably the toughest series on the speedway calendar. A four consecutive days endurance challenge that stretches driver skills and fitness, and the ability of crews to fight the fatigue of all night rebuilds and repairs.

On Thursday, November 21, a field of 24 of the country’s top saloon drivers and best up-andcomers will line up on the Cromwell clay for round 1. After the night’s racing or first thing in the morning they’ll head to X Factor Cars Riverside Speedway in Invercargill for round 2 on Friday night. Then Saturday it’s round 3 at Dunedin’s Beachlands Speedway with the Holden Trade Club Speedweek final on Sunday, November 24 at the Leeston Speedway near Christchurch.

Because it’s so important to get a points on the board from round 1, Thursday night’s racing will be fast and furious. These wide and low, V8 powered Monsters of Speedway are no slouches when it comes burning clay. Central Motor Speedway ‘t’ drivers competing are last year’s series third placegetter Ivan Murdoch(7t), Phil Burgess (15t) and Barry Taylor (28t).

Wow! It’s a Crosskart!

In Europe, Crosskart racing is incredibly popular with these pocket rockets (2.6m long and 1.6wide) used by most WRC drivers to practise their off-road skills. Excited by the prospects for Crosskarts in New Zealand and to gauge public response, Hayden Paddon has imported a 1300cc Suzuki Haybusa powered Semog Crosskart from Portugal. This starts with the demo at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Thursday, November 21. Looking a bit like a scaled down dune buggy with streamlined body panels or a rear engine speedway midget given a style makeover that includes a roof and rear wing, Hayden describes the Crosskart as heaps of fun to drive.

After the Ron sprigs Memorial Meeting was rained off on Saturday night (Nov 9) track promoter Jason Scott is hopeful to run the Ron Spriggs Memorial Sprint Car Trophy feature race on Thursday, November 21 in a field that will include Hayden Paddon showing his sideways skills in a sprint car. Other favourite speedway classes will also be racing during the evening that starts at 5pm.

Staff Christmas Do? Yeah right.

I the only person that works for an company that doesn’t throw a Christmas do?

Tis the season when every single one of my friends has the date locked in for their staff holiday do. I know of one friend that’s going to Mt Cook for their Christmas do!

Our company hasn’t even spared a thought for what were doing, neither have they sussed a date. Instead the boss has piled on the work to keep us busy right up until bloody Christmas day (they probably don’t

even celebrate christmas - the grinch). Sure your staff do is a way to drink some free booze and be merry with your work mates but moreover, it’s a display of appreciation from the boss. It’s the moment to thank your employee’s for all the work they’ve done throughout the year.

Really feeling the love here. I’m gonna have to crash some other staff christmas do.

We have ‘No Junk Mail’ clearly displayed on our letterbox yet people seem to flat out ignore this sign. You still get real estate flyers about ‘how a property down the road has sold for a gizillion dollars have you considered selling yours?’ and recently Jesus junk mail. I’ll take the real estate propaganda over the religious mambo-jambo any day. I fiercely believe that jesus is not my savior and that I don’t need to attend church to repent my sins.

The existence of god almighty was adapted centuries ago to help explain natural occurrences that befell on the human livelihood. God is imagined thought, and sure, it helped explained stuff in those early days but science has now provided

us with cold hard facts - we no longer need to turn to the bible to have god solve all our problems. Religion, especially like Christianity, has been the catalyst of many wars, fleecing the middle class of a chunk of their income and brain washing on a mass scale - look at how religion has meddled with US politics. Jesus is not my friend. Sneakily putting this in my letter box will not help me change my mind, it obviously evoked the opposite reaction.

Practice as you will but don’t come to my house to push the word of Jesus in my letterbox. I would’ve called up the culprit but our resident letterbox snail ate through the number.

Over the long weekend our red bin was left out after it was emptied - spare me the comments - everybody leaves their bin out for a day or two. My issue is, when we went to retrieve it some cheeky bastard (I suspect rowdy Invercargill holiday makers) filled it to the brim with their weekends worth of rubbish! We still had to get through our week! We still managed to squeeze the rubbish we accumulated over the week but every time we opened that lid we were filled with rage. I’m ok with a Macca’s cup and dog poop bag chucked in there every so often but to fill our bin with 2 black sacks of rubbish, I see that action

as a big middle finger and not a care for others. Why are people so inconsiderate nowadays? Do we now have to lock our bin lids? Has anybody else experienced the same thing? I know we were slightly at fault for leaving our bin out but that’s not the point! We shouldn’t have to deal with other people’s rubbish! The point is, respect for people’s property. The same respect should apply when you’re at the park and you can’t put your rubbish anywhere, don’t leave it on the ground!

Stop being lazy, take it with you and dispose of it properly.

by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I can’t believe I completely forgot about the fireworks display on Friday night. I know it’s very un-p.c to like them but I just can’t help myself. As a child there weren’t those big events, but we still loved Guy Fawkes. There were no rules about buying them and even as a ten year old, I could squander my pocket money on Tom Thumbs at Jack Reid’s Four Square. I remember walking home (kids who lived within 2 miles of school couldn’t use the bus) with Alistair Nesbit and Steve Cotton. Hiding behind the bushes diagonally opposite the Millbrook corner, we would throw lit crackers at passing cars (we had to be careful as we knew nearly all the drivers, and some might have mentioned this to our parents). Hardly any cars came by in those days so we sometimes threw them at each other. Such fun!

I’m sure the weather must have washed or blown out the fireworks show but the trees are happy to have this lovely long shower to sluice off all that nasty bushfire dust from Australia AND the wild and soggy weather was great for the inaugural Queenstown Writer’s Festival at the Sherwood. I assumed that it would be what my friend calls a cauliflower patch - rows and rows of white heads - but there were so many young people especially at the interview with Emily Writes - she’s a blogger with a massive following among young mothers. She’s very, very funny and had the audience in stitches as she covered dealing with people who offer unsolicited advice about mothering, and how to have an orgasm with a Hitachi magic wand. It’s all on the blog if you need help with either of those topics!

Bravo to the organisers of the festival - it’s been a huge effort and it just goes to show that a tiny festival can be even more stimulating than a big one. Both the flash fiction and poetry workshops were fully subscribed and there were good crowds to all the talks. 2020 will definitely see it again and I’m hoping that Freddie Gormack-Smith can be lured along to talk. Every local Montessori student over 18 will remember him and it was his mother Pip who taught them all. He’s already had masses of his work published but he has also won the top classics and performing arts awards at his final school prizegiving in Christchurch. The Queenstown Lakes District is the fastest growing region in the country with Central Otago the third fastest, in 2018. Migration is driving this growth and predominantly by the labour migrant sector, those that allow the rest of us to enjoy the benefits of a prosperous district supported by a vibrant visitor market.

The statistics mask a growing issue where economic hardship comes hard up against an increasing gap between housing supply with its subsequent availability issues and affordability.

Migration whether for short term workers or those looking to settle more permanently generally starts out with accommodation coming from the rental market. As supply and affordability are both under pressure Citizens Advice are increasingly working with clients who have housing issues. Many people living in overcrowded or woefully unsuitable accommodation and are often in a position where pushing back on the landlord would put them in a worse position.

In 2019 at least a third of CAB enquiries relate to housing and the number of people looking for accommodation help is growing. Issues we deal with include tenants’ rights and obligations, landlords refusing to refund bonds, tenants refusing to pay rent, problems with shared utility bills, substandard accommodation, and how to lay a complaint with the Tenancy Tribunal.

There are increasingly issues relating to flat sharing even bed sharing in the same room which is not covered under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986. While many tenants don’t want to ‘rock the boat’ for fear of repercussions that may lead to eviction and then nowhere to go but when legal intervention is necessary, we can guide people through the Disputes Tribunal process.

Often there is no quick fix, but Citizens Advice Bureau can offer information and advice so that everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities, and feel empowered to stand up for themselves.

Queenstown eco-tourism pioneers smash the ten-year milestone

Start a tourism business in the competitive Queenstown market then add a looming global financial crisis and you’ll get a picture of the business landscape that Queenstown eco-tourism pioneers, Ziptrek Ecotours, faced when they opened ten years ago. Jodi Walters sat down with Managing Director, Trent Yeo and Sales & Marketing Manager Nicky Busst as the company prepares to celebrate turning ’10 Years Young’ this month.

‘A lot of people thought we were crazy for starting a business at the start of a financial downturn’, says Trent Yeo, Managing Director of Ziptrek. We didn’t think about it like that. For us, there was only one way and that was up’, chimes in, Marketing Manager, Nicky Busst, who has been with the eco-tourism business since it opened its doors November 2009. It’s that positive attitude that has not only driven company growth month on month, year on year since day dot, but it’s also won the young company numerous awards and accolades; most recently, Trent Yeo’s ‘Emerging Leader’ award at last month’s Tourism Industry Association awards in Auckland.

It wasn’t all plain-sailing for the eco-tourism pioneers. Yeo faced a challenging four years of Resource Management Act red tape before Ziptrek could open their doors. ‘I thought the idea of a country that’s 100% pure and the adventure capital of the world would be a fairly receptive place to open an eco-tourism zipline company’, says Yeo, ‘but it was hard’. One of the highlights for me was just getting it open. We held the opening party at Brazz and we were on the news for the first time, live, while the party was on’.

Yeo, who spends his downtime traveling to research future tourism trends and writes a popular tourism blog through his Linked In profile, thinks the tourism sector needs to clearly articulate how it’s going to deal with carbon. ‘We believe in it [eco-tourism], says Busst, ‘it’s been at the forefront of every single decision-making process, we’ve gone through, throughout the business from day one’.

Innovation is another driving force behind the company. Ziptrek was the first Queenstown business to use virtual reality as a sales technique in the trade sector and they’re about to launch an artificial intelligence chat pod on their website. ‘Tourism is ever-evolving and we’re very interested to be as much as we can at the forefront of that’, says Yeo. So what is in store for the next ten years? ‘It looks like we haven’t been doing anything for the last few years’ laughs Yeo, ‘because we didn’t release anything new but that’s far from the truth. Over the last few years, we’ve been working on some big developments that will change the whole scope of the business. We’ve just been working on the backend to try to get things moving and we’ll hopefully, in a year, have something to announce. ‘We don’t want to stand still, we’ll get bored if we do that.

The next ten years will look nothing like the first 10’, says Nicky, ‘absolutely, I think it’s going to turn everything on its head’.

Arts+Culture ‘Unloosed’ exhibition returns to Queenstown ‘Unloosed’, a collaborative exhibition between Jeweller Jessica Winchcombe and photographer Paul Green, is returning to the scene of its creation.

In April 2019, the duo held a pop-up show at Sherwood Queenstown.

Locals were invited to try on Jessica’s creations – wearing them whichever way they wanted – and Paul photographed the results.

As a visual artist and jewellery designer, Jessica was fascinated about what happens to the pieces once sold; what happens to them when they’re taken home, how are they used and worn? It’s this curiosity which fuelled the exhibition idea.

“Jessica and I have been working together for quite a few years but we wanted to do something more experimental,” says Paul.

“Jessica was interested in what people do once they’ve bought her jewellery and taken it home. We invited people to show up and dress up.”

Both work at the commercial end of the spectrum too, but for this exhibition, the pieces were big, bright and unconventional. Paul used his highly professional photography equipment to set up a ‘photo booth’ type experience where guests could react to the camera with little or no direction from Paul.

“The pieces can loosely be called ‘jewellery’ – they’re worn art objects, whimsical and fun and at the more experimental end of jewellery. I had a mini studio set up so people could play up to the camera.”

The resulting images and the jewellery pieces were exhibited at Te Auaha in the heart of Wellington. Now, ‘Unloosed’ will return to Queenstown for an exhibition at Queenstown Contemporary (15th – 28th November, 5 Mile).

“It was well-received in Wellington. There was a steady stream of students and gallerists – it was great exposure for both Jessica and myself but because the photographs are of local people, we really wanted to bring it back here. It’s a chance for those people to come back and see how it looks.”

On Sundays 17th and 24th, the original pop-up show will be relived – gallery visitors can again try on the jewellery and book a photography session. There’ll also be jewellery, art pieces, prints and photography for sale across a range of price points.

“It’s all a bit left field, But I’m really enjoying where we’re going,” adds Paul.

Art News Seeking volunteers to help choose new art for Dunedin Dunedin City Council is seeking volunteers to help choose a new piece of public art for the Octagon, in Dunedin.

The Council announced last week that it was looking for people with a keen interest in the art and cultural history of the region, with knowledge and experience of nga toi Maori and contemporary art. The chosen artwork will be the first of a new collection, to be curated over the next decade.

Four volunteers are needed to complete the decision panel and they’ll sit alongside four council team members. The deadline for applications is 24th November.
