Queenstown would look pretty different if there were no Volunteering Managers. Every year on 5th November, International Volunteer Managers Day is celebrated, and this year marks the 20th year that managers of volunteers have been celebrated around the world. At Volunteering Central we promote, support and strengthen volunteering around the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes District and see this as a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and recognise the work of managers and leaders of volunteers, who are often the unsung heroes of the volunteering community. We often hear volunteers being described as ‘the heart of their community’, which we agree with wholeheartedly, however the efforts of many of these volunteers would not happen as efficiently and effectively as they do, if it wasn’t for the volunteer managers who lead them. A volunteer manager’s ability to lead, motivate and support volunteers to make a difference in communities across the globe is inspiring and we see it each and every day here in the Wakatipu. Volunteer managers are as diverse as volunteers themselves and manage people across a huge range of roles. For some it’s their profession and for others they are volunteers themselves often taking on the role on top of work, family and other interests and commitments.

Either way, whether paid or unpaid, the team at Volunteering Central support volunteer managers who strive to ensure that their volunteers have the best possible experience and can make the biggest impact possible within their organisation and community. International Volunteer Manager Day is a fantastic chance to showcase the work that often goes by unnoticed by these leaders of volunteers. The Wakatipu has a huge range of volunteer groups – the local Rotary, Lions or Altrusa, the Outreach Therapy Reading volunteers (and their dogs!) in the local library, the individuals preparing a hot lunch at Wakatipu Senior Citizens every Friday, our community’s emergency service volunteers, volunteers giving up their Saturday morning to plant trees with the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust, trapping with the Wakatipu Wildlife Trust or cleaning the lake front with Sea Shepherd and the hundreds of volunteers that give their time to local sporting groups and international events – I could go on all day but you get the gist! All these volunteer groups require a strong volunteer manager who strive to ensure that their volunteers have a meaningful and rewarding role, that volunteers realise the impact they are having within their community and that they feel valued and respected for giving up their time and sharing their skills.

Swap Guy Fawkes for Matariki!

I W If we’re going to have one night a year where

the skies are lit up with the noise and colour of fireworks and the local fire crews have heart palpitations over the number of backyard fires and pyrotechnic celebrations – why Bonfire Night? Guy Fawkes, or Bonfire Night, is a British celebration – once compulsory, it celebrates the torture and burning to death of Guy Fawkes, a terrorist who tried to blow up the houses of parliment. While there’s historical importance and a sense of tradition in Britain, it seems ‘off’ that we celebrate this with more gusto than Matariki.

Matariki is in winter – so the skies are darker earlier, which suits a firework display much better than the long and warm spring evening of 5th November. Matariki has far more cultural importance than an event that happened 11,400 miles away, 400 years ago. Matariki is also a much more positive celebration at heart and something unique to Aoetroa. Sure, we could celebrate both, but Matariki should take precedence in our annual calendar. Make sense.

Did you vote? Did you vote in our recent election? If not why not? after a recount the number of votes that AJ Mason and Glyn Lewers gained were the same. A coin was tossed and although AJ Mason was already sworn in the other guy won. How galling for things to be decided this way. If it was a draw in sport there would be a better way to decide who wins? If one more person had voted it could have been a different outcome. I have been asking people if they voted and have been surprised how many did not, despite being dissatisfied with the way life in Queenstown is heading. AJ Mason would have challenged the status quo he has a brilliant mind and a passion for the environment Nik Kiddle made some cogent arguments on how to improve

the things that we are all fed up with; parking, the ever expanding airport, tourism at any price, water issues etc. Some people I spoke to said they voted for Jim Boult because they didn’t know the other guy. It was all there on line, in the papers you could see what the candidates stood for. We won’t get another chance to choose who runs this place for a few years, but for goodness sake please vote next time. A vote is a powerful thing. Every vote counts.

In the case of the farm you cagily referred location to, you are correct in that they waited no time in burning hence the stench and general discomfort to the development across the road, one might describe as an entitled residences zone. Your comments in the second paragraph are stated as if you had a conversation with the culprits

(questions and answers) or are you assuming what their replies would be? Your concern for residence and tourist of the Wakatipu and their impressions of the region are commendable. I shall be able to identify you by seeing you picking up strewn trash along the highway from Jacks Point to Kawarau Bridge daily keeping those under the illusion that NZ is Clean and Green. Respectfully yours, neither a farmer nor a developer.

RE: Parks 4 the fur baby May I ask the writer what steps he/she has taken prior to this whinge post on LWB? Have you made inquiries to the council, a submission on the QLDC website regarding plan changes and/ or any stage of the Proposed District Plan? Are you lobbying the Council in any form, is there a petition to be shared and signed? Is anyone, other than the readers of this weeks LWB, aware of your angst and in the absence of yourself is anyone doing anything? Where do you propose this dog park to be, who will pay initially for the land and ongoing costs such as facilities

and maintenance (dog poop clean up because not everyone does that). Bearing in mind the impracticality and unavailability of the CBD, elsewhere parking will be an issue as too will be those who drive to said dog park contributing to both pollution and traffic congestion. There’s a lot to consider and I can only believe all of the above and more have been consider and action taken prior to your whinge. I wait your reply comments in anticipation of moving forward, joining forces and seeing results. I’m waiting. *finger taps*

Aside from providing a drop in centre, Happiness House assists our clients to access the right support and if needed we can advocate and arrange appointments on the client’s behalf with other organisations. We work closely with other agencies and government departments including: PACT, JIGSAW, Salvation Army, Budget Advice, WINZ, Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust, Queenstown Lakes Family Centre etc. We run several projects throughout the year, including a Garden Group, Craft Groups, Cooking on a Budget, Plastic Free July etc. As well as learning practical skills and how to be more selfsufficient, participants get the benefit of social interaction. Friday’s are our Produce Day. Supermarkets donate produce for us to pass onto clients in need. Queenstown has the highest rental rates in New Zealand and tends to have low wage rates. Many of our clients don’t have surplus funds above the necessities to cover costs like doctors, dentist and car maintenance etc. By providing free produce we can provide some relief to their budget, helping them meet the costs of those needs that get put aside when there isn’t any spare cash. Also, on a Friday, we run a Frisbee Golf group. Participants benefit from the fresh air and exercise, meet other people in their community and make connections, with no cost.

Everyone is welcome and we enjoy meeting new people.

Central Motor Speedway Celebrates Memory of Founder, Ron Spriggs

This Saturday’s meeting at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in the Cromwell Basin celebrates the memory of Ron Spriggs, one of the most important people in the speedway club’s history. As with so many valued community assets, Central Motor Speedway is a stand-out example of what one man with a vision can achieve. In the late 1970’s, Invercargill panelbeater, speedway driver and fan, Ron Spriggs felt that as much as he enjoyed holidaying in Central Otago, the region lacked family entertainment, namely a speedway. His search for a suitable location took him to council-owned marginal land off Cromwell’s Sandflat Road that offered a natural amphitheatre embankment. Eager for an attraction that would bring people to the newly created Lake Dunstan and to a pretty much relocated Cromwell, the Council supported Ron’s speedway proposal granting him a long term lease. Just to show how much he was a man ahead of his time, Ron’s plans were not only for a speedway but ultimately a hard track beside it, an animal park, go-karting and horse trekking. But we don’t think calling that next door area Highlands ever entered his mind. With support from his partner Valerie and willing helpers, ‘Golden Central Speedway’, as Ron named it, was ready to host its first meeting over Christmas, 1980. Cars were backed up well into the Kawarau Gorge but unfortunately terrible weather meant a last minute postponement of that first meeting. Winds were so fierce, porta loos blew over – one with a man in it. From the now demolished caretaker’s house he built beside the track, Ron ran the speedway for 11 years until terminal illness forced him from active involvement. He died in March, 1996 just days shy of his 54th birthday. Local people (and the local dialect) are known as ‘Geordie’ – an ancient nickname that may have stemmed from the Hanoverian King George I, who favoured the fearsome locals in his battle against the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. WHEN

In more recent history, Newcastle has played part in some significant engineering and scientific breakthroughs. Josef Swan invented key components of the lightbulb there and the city centre’s Mosely Street was the first in the world to be lit by electricity. Swan was the first to publicly demonstrate an electric lightbulb and did so in the Literary and Philosophical Society, a beautiful independent library that still welcomes visitors (and borrowers) today. The city is also famous for its stunning historical architecture, where Roman ruins sit beside 13th Century friars, which aren’t too far from Classic era sandstone grandeur. Across the River Tyne in the township of Gateshead, sits the Sage Gateshead – an ultramodern concert hall that looks like a graceful space slug. Beside this is the Baltic Flour Mill, a 100-year-old building that’s been transformed into a contemporary art gallery. From the top of this building, you can see up the Tyne, which winds its way to the North Sea (where there’s a cold, but rustically pretty coastline), and the

by Bethany Rogers seven bridges which connect the Gateshead township to Newcastle City Centre. Among these is the famous Tyne Bridge – a ‘test’ for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Each September, more than 50,000 people run across the bridge as part of the Great North Run – the world’s largest half-marathon fun run. Once famous for coal, the city is gradually becoming a popular visitor destination. Theatres, art shows and cinemas abound and the charming city centre is bursting with great bars and restaurants all within a short walking distance. It’s so easy to get from restaurant to a bar, to another bar, that Geordies never wear coats – even when it’s snowing. Friendlier and more easy-going than their Southern English cousins, it’s the warmth and hospitality of the locals that make Newcastle a great place to visit. You might not understand the dialect, but it’s not hard to find a Geordie who wants to proudly show you around their home city.

Could our beautiful corner of the world look more beautiful than it has this week? Everything’s so green and sparkly and my asparagus is popping up each day faster than we can eat it and all the trees are bustling with bees and birds and it is just too hard staying inside to do even the most basic tidyup jobs. That’s my excuse, anyway. Makes me wonder if anyone got round to filling in the council’s Quality of Life survey? Out of pure curiosity (I am officially nosier than anyone else in the Wakatipu Basin) I decided to see what they wanted to know and of course, I’d be fascinated to know how much it cost us. It took well over an hour as the survey crashed out twice and I had to start over, plus an agonising wait for each new question to load. It seems a bit strange that they haven’t already worked out what bothers and pleases most of us. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love the bike trails and bus service and the libraries, and I’m pretty sure most of the people who actually live here permanently don’t want all this massive development (development is far too positive a word for what it actually means) of shops and hotels and vast housing estates. Everyone wants a stronger community and that is a huge factor in quality of life - we are in danger of losing some of that if we don’t keep having and supporting wonderful events like the Presbyterian Fair on Saturday. So many people of all ages, and a perfect chance to buy things other people don’t need anymore or have too many of. Lucky me getting there early enough to spy and buy a huge bucket of tree peonies. They only last a day or two and I felt too guilty having them all to myself, so I spent a happy morning delivering these huge, fragile flowers around to everyone. When I dropped the bucket back at the fair, I met the generous Katrina Gardiner who had grown and donated them and she’d felt the same - it’s much more fun to share the love. And for extra fun and fascination this week, don’t forget to book some tickets for the inaugural Queenstown Writers’ Festival at the Sherwood this weekend. The weather’s meant to be lousy so it’s the perfect indoor activity. For the more action hungry, get along to Dorothy Browns and watch “Hillary: Ocean to Sky” - a sensational documentary about the trip Ed Hillary, his son and mates did some 40 years ago taking Hamilton jetboats up the Ganges as far as they could, and then climbing the Himalayas. Utterly terrifying, especially seeing those tiny boats roaring into the huge walls of water. I’m glad I can get my thrills in less dangerous ways!

Implications of 5G for Queenstown & Surrounds

On the 1st of August the ODT ran an article which sparked the interest of those awaiting the roll out of 5G in Queenstown. Queenstown will be among the first communities in the country to have 5G rolled out which could be as soon as November, yes this month. It’s clear that many are not clear what 5G mobile technology is or how it could impact the community. We have seen the adverts promising driverless cars and amazing technology advances, but what’s the cost and do we have a well-rounded understanding of the downsides? 5G stands for 5th generation, which is the latest development in communication systems using MMW (millimetre wave) bandwidth with download speeds that are 10-100 times faster than 4G and with far greater data capacity. 5G will not replace 4G but overlay its signal from new cell towers and transmitters. It will however mean an upgrade in your phone. These new transmitters must be 150-300 meters apart for the technology to work effectively. This massive increase in transmission locations is very different to what we currently have in place. The impact of this number of transmission locations is alarming populations throughout the globe where 5G is operating with reports of bird and insect life disappearing and studies confirm that EMF radiation is playing a huge part in this because of the way it interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field. For humankind, some can be allergic to this amount of radiation and develop physical symptoms, others may have low level symptoms which may worsen over time. Internationally, symptoms, such as dizziness, feeling unwell, depression, low libido and insomnia have been reported. While children, pregnant woman, and the sick will be most at risk from illness they are not alone with peer reviewed research suggesting effects such many behavioural, brain and body system damage as well as cancer concerns. We want to have peaceful enjoyment of our environment, with the choice to switch off technology in our homes if we so decide. 5G takes this choice away. We do not want to halt any economic development of Queenstown, however this must not be rushed out at Christmas time, without proper testing. At a public meeting on the 10th in Arrowtown, Dr Tracy Chandler will present on health implications regarding EMF’s and Wi-Fi technology, as well as what we may be facing with the roll out of 5G. Dr Tracy Chandler is also known as Dr Wellness, she has been developing training on the implications of wireless technology to train other health experts as health problems become more commonplace. QUEENSTOWN WRITERS FESTIVAL More than a year ago, a group of friends decided that it was about time Queenstown had a writers and readers festival. Across New Zealand and the world, there’s fantastic literary festivals which enable book-lovers to meet and find out more about the writers they love – but until now, there’s never been one in Queenstown. Reading for leisure is a time-treasured thing. No matter what’s happening in your world, there’s always an opportunity to slip into another realm. Stephen King wrote, “A really good book transports you from your surroundings, it blocks out all noise, and suspends reality; it absorbs you in the story and takes you on a journey with the characters, where you see and feel everything they do.”

Arts+Culture Nick Rado’s gone clean Comedian Nick Rado has built up a reputation for ‘clean’ comedy sets that pack a punch and he’s excited to bring some of his newest material to Queenstown later this month. Nick’s a multi-award-winning writer, MC and stand-up comedian. He’s won the NZ Comedy Guild Award for ‘Best Comedy MC’ four times and is a head writer (and occasional panellist) on TV3’s comedy show 7 Days. He’s heading to Queenstown to MC Remarkably Funny’s regular comedy open mic night on 12th November (Yonder, $5) and he’ll stick around to do stand up with a few local comedians on 13th November (Sherwood Queenstown, $25). “I’m really looking forward to being back in Queenstown. It’s very international, there’s a lot of people who are international or they’ve travelled, so the crowd has a sort of open-mindedness that you wouldn’t get in… well, I don’t want to name towns, but basically Queenstown can get Kiwi jokes and jokes about Brexit, American politics, etc.,” says Nick. “I’m excited to be part of the new scene that’s emerging in Queenstown. It’s great that they’ve got loads of local acts – I had my first gig in Bath (UK) as a traveller… it was the perfect opportunity to try out stand up as if it didn’t go well, none of my mates would know about it!” Nick says that in the last two-to-four years he’s developed a reputation for ‘clean’ comedy that’s intelligent and funny – without profanities or offensive content. He opened for Welsh comedian Rob Brydon during his New Zealand tour; Brydon is famous for his ‘family-friendly’ comedy and he’s encouraged Nick and given him tips and advice. “It’s not that I don’t find profanity funny, it’s just that some people feel they can’t enjoy comedy because they don’t like profanity… I didn’t realise that there’s not many comedians doing that. “As a straight white guy with a beard you need a point of difference and being clean is mine. It’s harder to write, but the jokes are better, I think, it’s worth it.” The gigs will be a rare opportunity to see Nick in action – he’s got a packed calendar later this month with an unusual mix of venues across Auckland, Hong Kong, Queenstown, Sydney and then Cromwell. Art News Divorcees battle over art collection valued at $1 billion US A super-wealthy, divorced New York couple are arguing over their art collection, valued at just under $1 billion US. Honorary trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Mrs Linda Macklowe, divorced her husband of 59 years in 2016 – property developer Mr Harry Macklowe. Mr Macklowe has since re-married, but the billionaires are at loggerheads over the spoils of their marriage. Among the multi-milliondollar properties, super-yachts and a book collection worth a cool $85,500, is an art collection valued at just under $1 billion.
