Is there any architectural plan that’s in sympathy with our natural beauty? The Wakatipu Basin has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world. We have views that the rest of the world envies and the scenery here will forever be used to market New Zealand. But, turn your back to the mountains and lakes and look at humanity’s creation. Why have we allowed developers to build such ugly little boxes – architecture that falls short of the standard that we, and mother nature, deserves? It seems imagination and inspiration have been pushed aside to better cater for greed and short-term needs. Imagine Frankton Road or Gorge Road 150 years from now; can anyone honestly say the architecture here will be admired by our children’s children? Around the world, ancient cities and towns built in less technologically sophisticated times are renowned for their design. But in modern-day Queenstown, we can’t seem to think that far ahead. We are basically turning our town into a trailer park without wheels. Full of temporary structures never intended to stand the test of time. Very little is built with longevity in mind, meaning Queenstown will be in a state of disrepair and/or construction for eternity unless the minimum requirements are improved (and policed). I don’t enjoy the constant disruption and noise pollution associated with the construction business, like everyone else, I tolerate it as part of the growth cycle we find ourselves in. Unfortunately, my fear is it will never end, no sooner is one job done another starts. It seems peace and serenity will not be part of the Queenstown experience any time soon. A big talking point at this time is affordable housing. We have a booming population that’s predicted to continue growing. We have a vibrant economy and an ever-expanding workforce. At some point we will cap this growth as our environment and infrastructure cannot sustain this pace for too much longer, something many have campaigned for. There is a saying, ‘quality not quantity’. Simply because there is perceived demand it does not necessarily follow that we should meet that demand at the expense of good planning and quality execution. The current way of thinking is to increase the low-quality rubbish at the expense of everything else which makes this place special. This is wrong. Quality designs and craftmanship should be the norm not the exception. However, the award-winning efforts are few and far between in this blind drive to become larger. Take your foot off the accelerator for a moment and have a look at the road ahead. Sometimes, mistakes are discovered way too late and trying to pull off a u-turn at 100 kilometers an hour will most definitely end in tears. David Gibbs - Commercial Operations Manager

Arts+Culture ‘I am very fond of you, but you drive me round the bend’ Father and son take to the stage. Father and son John and Blaise Barham will take to the stage this month with ‘Dear Lupin’, an adaptation of real-life letters between Roger Mortimer and his son Charlie. Roger Mortimer was a Dunkirk veteran and a BBC horse racing correspondent. His son Charlie (nicknamed Lupin) was purportedly “a bit of a lad” and the letters entail his father’s advice mixed with entertaining anecdotes. The curated letters were published in book form and later adapted for the stage by best-selling author Michael Simkins. “It is really fun,” says Blaise, “it’s very much stiff upper lip. The love between them is obvious, but they’re from that generation where they can never talk about it. Mental health, addiction and relationships are all there, but they kinda talk around the issues.” The play is set in the attic of the Mortimer family home (digital set created by Scott Kennedy) and details Roger desperately trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow. Charlie is an Eton drop-out, he stumbles through an array of jobs and spirals into “drunken hedonism”. Is there any correlation between this father and son, and John and Blaise Barham? “I’m sure I wasn’t as wayward,” says Blaise. (John laughs.) Like Roger, John was a Major in the army for 19 years. He’s also a writer and a veteran stage actor; he’s been in more than 70 productions across New Zealand, Hong Kong, UK and Germany. Similar to Charlie, Blaise attended public school and both have lived through some of the oldfashioned tropes of army life and public school life seen in the play. “There’s lots of parallels,” says John. “It’s set in the South of England, which we both know so well.” The play has been years in the planning. Blaise had a play script idea in mind when he stumbled across the Dear Lupin book in Dorothy Browns bookshop and cinema several years ago; “I thought: actually, this is what I was thinking of writing.” He talked to John about it, who was enthusiastic – despite the pair being well-known in regional drama circles, they’ve never performed together. “Blaise came late to theatre. He was more of a rugby man and then he got into running the English School,” explains John. “I had enough drama in my life running the school, so I didn’t really get into drama until after that,” adds Blaise. Blaise has since played a very active role in the Remarkable Theatre group, who recently performed One Man Two Guvnors. Because Blaise and John live in different towns, they’ve decided to tour Dear Lupin, taking it to Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Wanaka, Alexandra, Cromwell and Queenstown. The play runs 27th November until 7th December and an early bird ticket price of just $20 is available until 31st October – so get in quick! Tickets via Eventfinda.com

Spring smoke blooms

I W I love Spring, as I am sure do most people. It is

the season where mostly good things happen, blossom, new growth, daylight saving, but, and it is a big but, it is the season where the selfish farmers and developers come out of hibernation, put their blinkers and ear muffs on and do their thing (please note this is not all farmers and developers). A very small selfish few take it upon themselves to set fires to green waste and see it burn for days on end, polluting the environment they share with more than 20,000 others, let alone the many tourists who spend a lot of money to visit so called clean green Queenstown. Come on guys those smoke filled days are not a good look. Why do they do it? Because they can, and they will trot out reasons like we got a permit... that does not make it right, or we have done it for years, again that does not make it right. Maybe they like the orange sunset! The most recent example I experienced was in the last week of September/early October,

when a particularly selfish farmer, (opposite Jacks Point and Hanley Farm... you know who you are), decided to set fire to about 12 piles of branches and needles from trees recently cut down. This pile never had a chance to dry out and maybe have a less smoke polluting burn. This farmer is either a slow learner or really doesn’t care, as he had a similar burn a month before and barely more than week after the trees had been felled. Guess what? They smoked and smoldered for more than three weeks!! I suggest this farmer should check out how the professional forestry companies do it. They cut the tress, trim the branches and leave it to decompose rapidly, not a fire in sight. Wake up. You may not like it, however you share this beautiful part of the world with others and you are required to play your part to care for it, otherwise the season of new growth will disappear forever. How dare you! (to borrow a phrase)

Lake-richandexpensive-View Is it me or do others get the feeling that Ngai Tahu and the current Councilors and Mayor are all over each other in a rather unseemly manner. First we had them entering into a Public excluded, commercially sensitive arrangements in regard to the Lake view site Hot pools. Then another of the same ilk, into the proposed deal being done for the new council HQ and latterly the old high school site which is being developed with financial and other inputs from the rate and taxpayers with the supposed sweeter of Kiwi Build housing ,which if the indicative information is correct, will priced

be way beyond the reach of the average New Zealander! (GASP! long sentence) And will probably end up like the Wanaka Kiwi build housing fiasco. In in a unique moment of candor when questioned about the sale price of this housing both the Minister of Housing and our Mayor shrug this off with the lame excuse, oh well that’s Queenstown, which in political speak translates into we will cry crocodile tears for you while we undertake our nefarious actives which are personally and politically expedient for us. ‘Show me real tears goddamit’

Facebook / Website comments RE: Dog doesn’t have talent I agree 100 per cent with you, Simon Howl. That dreadful noise and the dog going flat-tack puts my hackles up. I used to be able to walk past it, but I go out of my way now to avoid it. If this isn’t noise pollution, then what is? Breaking my heart. I’m late, I’m late because the bus was late I am all for save the trees and reducing waste! But i think the biggest challenge is for the buses to actually turn up on time... or at all! It’s embarrassing turning up to work/ meetings/ appointments late because the public transport is SO unreliable! The live tracker for the buses rarely works, they NEVER update their FB to let us know things aren’t going to plan - and good luck if you try to call them, it’s usually “out of office hours”! No wonder so many people own cars

Parks 4 the fur baby I am a proud Dog owner. I love my pooch and at this present point in time wish to choose dogs over children. My problem... where the bloody hell is the dog park!! My dog has been attending day care for 3 years and unfortunately the day care is having to close its doors, so now where do we take our dogs to meet up? I would love to take our pooch to meet and socialise with other dogs. There are so many dogs in Queenstown but absolutely no where to take them to meet other dogs where dogs can just be dogs. Run free, smell butts and take a big poop (Picked up by the owner with environmentally friendly dog bags of course!). Not all people are dog people.

I understand that and completely respect that. My dog is a large breed and a lot of people are intimated by us when we walk along the lake or around the Gardens. It would be nice where us dog owners can meet, gather and gush about their fur babies. Big or small. There is very little dog activities or dog day care facilities now in Queenstown, and the ones that are still open are fully booked. We are a growing town and yes i understand land is expensive. If Cromwell are looking at even looking into making a dog park, why the bloody hell can’t Queenstown?

Hello ACC, I’ve had a scooter accident It was announced today that total ACC payments for Lime scooters accidents in Auckland so far this year has now exceeded $1 million!!! When they arrive here in Queenstown, I would guess that we could double that? What with steep hills, and drunken idiots like we have here, it is a recipe for disaster. Surely the Police must have something to say about the potential problems. 5-0 say NO!

I mean Cromwell - Come ON!

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

Hope you’ve all had a good labour weekend without too much labour involved - mine was blissfully blobby although I did work hard and fruitlessly to find anyone who wanted to join me on Saturday night NOT watching rugby. It’s a very lonely life being a person with no interest in sport if you’re a New Zealander. With so many brilliant artists and musicians and authors, it’s mystifying to me why the All Blacks are still the most famous thing about us. When foreigners learn where I’m from, I ask them what they know about our country. It’s always the All Blacks with Lord of the Rings a close second. Sometimes Kiri Te Kanawa gets a mention, and even she is mentioned more and more rarely. A host of great local authors are appearing at the brand new Queenstown Writers’ Festival on November 9 and 10 at the Sherwood. Look it up online if you want to book tickets and all the books by the authors appearing are on display at Dorothy Browns in Arrowtown. I’m the buyer for the bookshop, and will be there most days this week from 12 - 2 if anyone wants to talk books, or get help choosing books for tricky people. I’m also going to be the saleslady for the books at the writers’ festival so am really looking forward to meeting lots of readers (maybe some of them will be unsporty enough to be friends with me!) It was enormously flattering to be asked by Scotty Stevens to come on a date with him this week - at my age, and given that I’m already married, it doesn’t happen that often. Unfortunately I had to turn him down as I was heading to Auckland for the opening of the new White and Wong restaurant. It would have been an amazing funeral if the plane had gone down - most of Queenstown seemed to be on that flight and my two sisters could probably have wangled a hefty bulk discount on the undertaker’s bill for doing so many of my family at once. I am happy to report that no funeral parlour benefited from the flights. And even better, I discovered that my invitation had been to listen to the bigheaded, sexist Bob Jones so I hadn’t missed out on anything (except for a night out with a handsome young man!) I’m much more interested in the Mindjam talks - we are so lucky to have the Catalyst Trust bringing all these excellent speakers here - do sign up to keep up to date with the events they organise. They’re also responsible for all the Lilliput libraries around the district - those little cabinets where you can leave a book you’ve enjoyed and exchange it for another one. How brilliant is that! If you haven’t already used one, check the online map for their locations, or maybe set up your own one - I can’t think of anything I’d like better than a tiny library at the bottom of my drive.

FICTION PICKS

The Valley at the Centre of the World

Pic

(F TAL - QTN, FTN, ATWN, MAK)

(CULT F KER - QTN)

This is Malachy Tallack’s third novel covering themes of islands and isolation. Sandy and his girlfriend have returned to Shetland to discover that in certain ways they belong but also, that they don’t. Tallack’s tale is set over the course of nine months during which Sandy reflects on his life and his relationships with his partner, his long lost mother and his island-bound community. Set against the rugged landscape of the Scottish coastal wilderness, this book spans the dramas of family and inheritance, old vs new, and the changing ways of island life. This immersive novel has been widely praised – cementing Tallack’s reputation as one of Scotland’s most promising new writers.

Beat Generation pioneer, Jack Kerouac, is recognised for his own style of writing; ‘spontaneous prose’. His biggest commercial success came from his 1957 acclaimed American classic, On the Road. Set in the late 1940’s, Kerouac’s novella, ‘Pic’ is the story of a 10 year old boy from North Carolina; Pictorial Review Jackson. The story is narrated by ‘Pic’ Jackson himself, and follows his journey after he is sent to live with his aunt after the death of this grandfather. When Pic’s brother, Slim, turns up unexpectedly, he takes Pic away to a new life. Kerouac’s tale follows the siblings’ road trip across America as they encounter many hardships and kindness, before eventually ending up in California.

Soldiers, Scouts and Spies

Earch Democracy

(993.302 SIM - QTN, FTN)

(338.476 SHI - QTN)

‘Soldiers, Scouts and Spies’ provides a well written, easy to follow, and thoroughly researched insight into the battles fought in the New Zealand Wars between 1845 and 1864. From a military perspective, Simons considers the role of technological change, socio-political relations, and the advantages and disadvantages of fighting on New Zealand’s unique terrain. Further emphasis is placed on the various approaches to intelligence gathering and the influence that these had over decision making and the outcome of each campaign. A fresh and compelling account of events which remain relevant and poignant today, this book is perfectly suited to anyone with interest in New Zealand history.

Dr Vandana Shiva is an activist and a radical. A physicist and a lecturer. A writer and a champion. Her latest book, ‘Earth Democracy’ addresses issues of conversation, sustainability, peace, and justice. Shiva seamlessly outlines the dangers of exploiting natural resources for capital gain; denouncing the destruction of the environment, emphasising the seriousness of climate change, and pinpointing the rising tide of extremist political opinion and violence against women. Do not despair! The underlying message of this book is one of hope. As waves of climate- conscious protest strengthen across the planet, Shiva champions the ideals of inclusion, teamwork and conscientious development. For anyone looking to be informed on the issues at the forefront of sustainable living, this is a book not to be missed.

WORLD CUP 2019 Schedule (NZ Time) Well, there you have it. The two best teams in the world will contest the World Cup final. Some All Black fans will disagree and claim to be far superior to South Africa. Yes, they did get “lucky” by losing to the All Blacks in round one and moving to the easy side of the draw. But the fact remains we stuffed up and will not get the chance to wallop them again. That privilege will go to England. Two and a half years ago when the draw was made it was plainly obvious that we would have to beat England if we were to get to the final, let alone win the title. While England began their planning to play the perfect game in that predicted semi-final, the All Blacks just went on with business as usual which was simply not enough when the time came to prove their mettle. Now we must play the curtain raiser 3rd/4th playoff and although that is a massive disappointment there is nobody to blame but the team and coaches themselves. No bad ref calls, no unlucky bounces of the ball. Just beaten by a better side on the day, when it mattered most. In the big dance, the English are clearly favourites. But pressure does funny things and as was the case with the All Blacks last week, the weight of expectation can be crippling. The Boks will hang around like a bad smell, take their penalty kicks and defend like demons. Will that be enough to tip over England? Probably not, but you never know. Stranger things have happened.

SUMMER MARKET SEASON OPENING WEEKEND|Remarkables

Park & Arrowtown It felt like Summer was well and truly on the way for day one of the Remarkables Market summer season at the Red Shed on Saturday. Hundreds of people turned up, most of them in shorts, t-shirts and jandals, to check out this year’s bespoke offerings. In stark contrast, at the Arrowtown Farmers Market in Butlers Green on Sunday, the winter raincoats came out again as the heavens opened and poured rain on the hundreds of hearty Arrowtowners eager to support the opening day of their markets.

Bin Take-Back

BIN TAKEBACK

Gina Dempster, Communications Manager for Wastebusters

Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. Four months into our new recycling and rubbish system, and it seems like everyone is getting the hang of putting out our 54,000 new bins on the right day. But what about all the old kerbside wheelie bins? Some have been dropped off for recycling, or even better (according to the waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse, recycle) have found a new use such as a safe storage place for earthquake readiness kits. But some of the old bins are still cluttering up our streets (or maybe your garden?), so QLDC is organising a free Bin Take-Back collection to make sure that all those old, unwanted wheelie bins can be recycled. The old bins will be taken up to Comspec, the reprocessing facility in Christchurch who also recycle our district’s plastic milk bottles. They look very different, but both the old wheelie bins and milk bottles are made from the same type of plastic called HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). Comspec will wash and chip the wheelie bins into plastic flakes, which can then be used to make new wheelie bins, export trays for New Zealand’s tulip bulb growers and other products. If you’d like to send away your old wheelie bin to be recycled, all you need to do is to find out which day Bin Take-Back is coming to your neighbourhood. Put your empty, old wheelie bin out by 7am on your Bin Take-Back day. It may take a few days to pick up all the old wheelie bins, so just leave your bin out until it’s taken away. BIN TAKE-BACK WEEK 1 • Makarora (includes SH6 from Hawea) Wednesday 30 October • Kingston (includes Wye Creek and SH6 from Jack’s Point turn-off) Thursday 31 October

BIN TAKE-BACK WEEK 2

AVAILABLE

• Queenstown and Wakatipu basin (including Arrowtown) Normal Collection Day during week of 4 - 8 November Most people should put their Bin Take-Back bins in the same collection spot as their normal rubbish and recycling bins. The only exceptions are people who live on country roads or subdivisions on the highways out to the townships of Makarora, Kingston and Glenorchy (as listed above), who will need to bring their old wheelie bins out to the highway and place them safely on the verge. Bin Take-Back is only for council wheelie bins, which means only the old blue QLDC recycling bin can be put out for collection in Queenstown and the Wakatipu basin. Glenorchy and Kingston residents can put out both the old blue QLDC recycling bin and the old red QLDC rubbish bins. Rubbish and recycling collections will run as normal alongside the Bin Take-Back programme. There is likely to be a lot of extra bins out on the pavement during Bin Take-Back week, so if you’ve still got lots of space inside your rubbish or recycling bin, then hang on until the following week to put it out to be emptied. Happy recycling. And remember to put only materials you know can be recycled in your blue and yellow recycling bins, so our district can meet the tight quality standards for recycling. If in doubt, leave it out.

If you have any questions about Bin Take-Back in your area, go to www.qldc.govt.nz/bin-take-back or ring customer services on 03 441 0499.

Keeping Safe in the Back Country We’ve arrived at that time of year again when people start heading outdoors in greater numbers.... and each year our Search and Rescue (SAR) calls for service increase accordingly. This increase in demand tends to run right through the warmer months until around Easter weekend. Anyone can slip and bust an ankle, pop a shoulder or arrange some other interesting form of discomfort - that couldn’t have reasonably been prevented. In New Zealand we have competent and professional air ambulance providers, backed by a SAR organisation that can deal effectively with these situations. There are however plenty of examples each year of people getting into trouble unnecessarily, or thinking they’re in trouble when they’re merely inconvenienced for time. No matter how experienced we are and how competent we think we are in the outdoors, this is a good time of the year to sit back, take stock and just remind ourselves on a few things. It starts off with the basics. 1. be responsible for your own safety. 2. be honest with yourself, and the other members of your party, about your own limits. Be realistic in your assessment of the capabilities of your companions. Judge over-confidence and bravado for what it is and don’t succumb to groupthink. 3. be prepared. These two words cover a long list of considerations, equipment and actions. Everything from leaving detailed intentions with a trusted person, having emergency means of communication, checking the right weather forecasts and making sure your equipment matches your plans - and any contingency plans. The good news is that there are two excellent websites that you can go to that cover everything you need to know in detail. Remember though theory doesn’t replace experience, gradually accumulated with more experienced companions. The first is run and Maintained by the SAR Council of New Zealand. www.adventuresmart.nz. This website provides a form to record your intentions. You then provide this form to a trusted person who you check in with upon your return. Should you not return on time this person then has sufficient detail to contact police and initiate inquiries or, if necessary, a search. There can’t be many things worse than lying in a heap with painful, immobilising injuries in the knowledge that nobody knows where you are. The bitter icing on top would be lying there contemplating your prospects in full knowledge that five or ten minutes spent arranging for your intentions would have given you every prospect of rescue. If we don’t know where you are heading we don’t come looking.

BOOK YOUR CHRISTMAS PARTY

b

The second website is that of the Mountain Safety Council of New Zealand (MSC). www.mountainsafety.org.nz. This outstanding website has detailed information and a range of professional videos relating to planning, preparation and equipment. It also has excellent videos in their Alpine Tramping Series. In this series there are 12 professionally produced videos, each covering one of NZ’s more popular Alpine tramping routes. Locally, Ben Lomond, Cascade Saddle, Gertrude Saddle and the Routeburn Track all feature. They are all locations where people have got in to trouble or died in the past. This website is thorough, informative and well worth a look. Finally and in keeping with the “be responsible for your own safety” message keep in mind that searches are costly, in some circumstances are high risk and involve significant staffing resources – many of whom are volunteers. If you’re in trouble we will be there. You’re not in trouble though if you are a bit late and might miss your plane or are in some other way a bit tired or inconvenienced and this won’t lead to escalating risk. Of note, rivers rise…and rivers fall. If there are unbridged rivers or streams on your route know your limits and don’t take risks. Delaying or waiting in these circumstances is not only the right thing to do, it’s the only thing to do. Plan for this possibility and be prepared to shelter and wait it out until it’s safe to cross. All the best for the warmer months.

Central Lakes Trust proud to make a major difference in our community Central Lakes Trust has funded over $99 million in grants back into the Central Lakes community since its inception in 2000. It plays an important role, but many people may not know how that came about.

The trust’s origins hail from Roxburgh the Energy Companies Act of 1992, and the Electricity Raes Junction Industry Reform Act of 1998, requiring power boards to be incorporated, allowing communities to determine how the shares in the new energy companies were held. Many communities, including Central Lakes allocated shares into a Trust. While many Trusts retained their lines business, with the 1998 reforms, Otago Central Electric Power Trust sold their lines business and retained the generation business (now Pioneer Energy), bestowing these in Central Lakes Trust. The trust’s purpose is to make a positive lasting contribution to the community by supporting charitable projects throughout Central Lakes. Having invested wisely over the years, the trust has grown its asset base from $155m to assets totaling $400m, including 100% ownership of Pioneer Energy Ltd, which drives an annual grants budget of approximately $9 million. Every three years, the community get to vote on who will be elected to represent them and serve on the Board of the trust. Comprised of five publicly elected alongside three appointed trustees, this year will see considerable change in the Board, as four trustees are mandated to retire, having served nine years. A record 25 candidates from across the region have nominated to stand, the largest number since the trust’s commencement. “The impact our growing population and demographics place, means we must ensure an understanding of community need rather than demand, and respond accordingly in terms of being fiscally responsible with community money. Our Trustees need to be in touch with the contemporary needs of our community. Now more than ever, it is important our community votes,” states Chief Executive, Susan Finlay. Voting commences on 31 October and closes midday 22 November 2019. Voting documents will be mailed to all qualified electors by Tuesday 5 November 2019.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN There is always plenty to do in Queenstown on Halloween. Maybe the kids are dressing up in costume going door to door collecting sweets or maybe you are thinking of throwing a Halloween party yourself. Don’t forget to load up with sweets for all those trick or treaters. Why not raid the closet and find yourself or your kids a white sheet for the classic ghost or fetch yourself a black outfit and paint some bones and dress as a skeleton! Surreal has the night covered with Darude putting on a show to spook. Or maybe you want to freak yourself out at Fear Factory! There are so many fun things to do for Halloween that the options are endless! So grab your friends and make the most of the night. No matter what your plans for a night of fright, stay safe and make it a night like no other!

LEGEND OF THE WEEK Billy T James Name: Eli Fynn, Managing Director of Queenstown Scaffolding LTD. queenstownscaffolding.co.nz Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? A few bevvies on the Million Dollar cruise with Wayne as the captain spinning some yarns. What's your favorite place to eat? Flame Bar & Grill for the mixed grill if you’re game enough. flamegrill.co.nz If you were stranded in QT with only 1 item, what would it be? A box of beers down by the lake’s all you need. What has been your worst date? Once took a vegan girl to a vegan restaurant then got ghosted hard. All that tofu for nothing. Who is your inspiration? My Grandad. Hard life fighting in WW2 then worked hard building the farm up so he could spend the later years travelling with my grandma. What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? I heard QT’s getting a Wendys burger joint and I was really interested. But I also heard we were getting a Bunnings like three years ago so... What's the best bad decision you ever made? Quitting work and going travelling. What's on your bucket list? Always wanted to chill with some penguins on Antartica. If you were an animal, what would you be? Well I am a bit of an animal in the bedroom if ya know what I mean... But maybe a cheeky Weka. What is the first thing you notice about a person? Basic manners and smelling good. What is your favourite season and why? Spring time always brings the vibes! What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? I’m a bit weird with socks, if they aren’t an exact pair they ain't going on. If you had to describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be? Probably the toughest guy around What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? Useless maybe making duck calls with my scaffolding spanner, valuable one is probably tying knots. Knots are handy. What did you always wanted to try but never found the courage to do? Ice climbing, that shit is hardcore. If you won a million dollars what would you spend it on in Queenstown? Buy a mean as big boat. Hopefully some left over for diesel and a mooring at the marina. What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? Did you see the guy going around stealing gates? I didn’t say anything incase he took a fence! RIP Billy T James What slang or trend makes you feel old? The lads at work have some way of making me realise I’m old most days. What’s your best piece of advice? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
