Lime scooters will be an unregulated menace. Lime Scooters are about to be introduced into our region – without prior consultation with our local people. While standing for council this year, many people asked me and other candidates if Lime Scooters would be introduced. I made my views quite clear that I was very concerned that the safety issues would far outweigh the environmental positives. Millions of dollars have been spent on ACC claims already throughout New Zealand and allowing Lime Scooters in Queenstown would see further incidents, when we already have a traffic congestion problem. Peter Hansby, the QLDC property and infrastructure manager said the council (back in June) was working very closely with Lime to sort out restrictions on where they could be used and parked, as well as speed and time limits. As we all know, Queenstown has a lot of young travellers that like to indulge in the nightlife here and there has been more alcohol-fuelled incidents in our area in the last few years than ever before. I don’t believe any amount of restrictions will stop major issues arising with the introduction of Lime Scooters. We live in an alpine village with a lot of hills and weather issues that are not concerns in other areas where Lime has been introduced.

I am in the transport industry, so I see and hear first-hand the issues QLDC has in front of them dealing with the congestion we have on our roads and I know that allowing another potential hazard into the mix is a disaster waiting to happen. Two questions for all reading this: how many times has a person walked out from between cars in front of you when you are driving and how many times has one of the food delivery motor scooters ridden beside you in the same direction when you are sitting in traffic? I believe everyone would agree that this happens on a regular basis. Now add Lime into the mix, coming down Fernhill, Ballarat Street, going from footpath to road to footpath… No amount of restrictions will stop the actions of riders that are intoxicated from causing mayhem for our motorists and pedestrians. As I said at a Meet the Candidates event: I don’t want to see Queenstown turn into an urban slum. Now, we won’t only have wheelie bins lining our streets, but discarded Lime scooters as well.

Dog don’t have talent

I W Perception of talent is a personal choice; one

person’s likes may be another’s dislike as many of us have seen on one of the plethora of TV talent shows. What is talent? Talent can be defined as “someone who has a natural ability to be good at something especially without being taught”. Then we have “Nuisance” and as defined in the council Bylaws “A person, animal, activity or circumstance causing an unreasonable interference with peace, comfort or convenience of another person whether or not that person is in a public place” Which one supersedes the other? As a long term local I have had the pleasure of seeing and hearing many talented people whether it be at performing arts, talent shows, comedy nights, live music and for the most part a diverse range

of buskers such as internationally recognised classical pianist AJ Hickling who has an undeniable talent. How then can we endorse a busker with a howling dog that can only be described as noise pollution as talent and not a public nuisance?? It may be a cash grab novelty but for many locals and tourists it is nothing more than a discomfort that forces us away from what was once an enjoyable day out. Perhaps some form of quality control from our council should be in place so that the annoying neighbours dog that barks all day spoiling your day off isn’t allowed into public space to cause nothing more than an unreasonable interference with peace and comfort. Keep it Beautiful, Eh? I curl an incredulous lip every time I see those fatuous words ‘Keep it beautiful’ when referring to this place -- and in particular this dirty, overcrowded, overpriced town. Thick pools of vomit on the pavements, phone booths with smashed glass, cyclists shooting past you on pavements with their how-dare-you-get-inmy-way expressions, the rise of graffiti and meaningless sticky adverts attached to road signs and traffic lights and elsewhere, parking spots becoming as rare as hen’s teeth, more and more angry car horns blaring, fists waving out of windows, pedestrians weaving across the road against obvious red lights, ignoring traffic whizzing past them as they stare into their everpresent cellphones in case they miss yet another ‘Hi,’ New York-like traffic queues jamming the town centre even at midday, the spectre of

cars without any lights on heading your way in the night, supermarket staff who don’t speak to you or even acknowledge your presence except to point to the EFTPOS machine, yet more hotels and apartments creating yet more competition for the parking crumbs that remain, tourists pulling suitcases while walking on Fernhill Road, oblivious to the fact that cars might share the road, Queenstown Gardens so choc-full of bikes and skateboards streaking up and down, it’s impossible to find a quiet spot to sit and read. The way this town is going – “like a pressure cooker,” one person described it recently, you need to be Spiderman to get from A to B in one piece. As for the road back to Queenstown from Frankton, even Spiderman’s patience would be stretched to the limit. ‘Squeaky Shoes’

RE: No parking vs no standing Check the Land Transport Act for legal definitions of parking and standing. Also check the Traffic Control Devices Act/Regulations 2004. That has all sorts of legal requirements for parking signs and if you look carefully enough you can generally find something to get off a parking ticket. For years the QLDC run airport had incorrect parking signs - the colour, wording and size were not legally correct - and I know many people (myself included) who got off airport parking tickets by pointing that out. The Airport have now changed to legally correct signs but if you got a ticket at the airport before 2016/2017 it was probably legally deficient. I also had a ticket in Shotover St for “inconsiderate parking” a year or so ago

because I stayed longer than the 15 minute limit. The fine for that was $60 instead of the $12 parking ticket I should have got for staying 5 minutes over time. When I questioned the council on why the offence was “Inconsiderate parking” they informed me it was inconsiderate because someone else may have wanted to park there. I told them that was not a correct interpretation of inconsiderate parking and said I would defend it in court. As soon as I said I wanted to go to court they waived the ticket. I’m sure plenty of other people have paid similar inconsiderate parking tickets - although clearly there was no need to. No need for expensive lawyers.

Solve all the problems! While its quite amusing to note all the comments about people parking in The No Parking areas. I am somewhat surprised that little or nothing is heard about the proliferation of those that park on the yellow lines, footpaths ,on breams or over peoples driveways etc. Many of those are clearly residents and the worse offenders are commercial delivery persons who appear to have unfretted rights to do so. What about those yellow lines bro Its not illegal to text or talk on your phone while driving in Queenstown. We have an exemption from the law that covers the rest of NZ! The Police do not police that law here. Queenstown above the law The funny part is, the cctv cameras were put in for crime fighting! Now they are used for parking tickets?! Who watches the cameras and issues the tickets? We’ve all been duped!

I’m loving all the feedback from everyone - thanks Cath Gilmour for telling me about Labour Weekend’s Mindjam with Otago University - look it up online for some great talks at Yonder about everything from crime writing to Brexit (I’m addicted to the crime of Brexit and can’t stop following this unbelievable saga trying to guess what tomorrow’s latest plot development will be, ditto the Trump presidency). And thanks to Julie Scott from the Affordable Housing Trust who put me right on the finer details of the selection criteria - I’m still convinced that people should have to have lived here for much longer than six months to go on the list, and they should definitely have to have shown huge commitment to the local community. AND I’d prefer them to be in what I call essential jobs -police, nurses, teachers…. if very wealthy holiday house owners can’t find a cleaner because the cleaners can’t afford a house here, then maybe the very wealthy people should provide accommodation themselves - as should any other business. The flowers in Arrowtown are not just getting the tourists’ cameras snapping - I’ve had some very snappy emails moaning about fake flowers. My inner Grinch gets all itchy and cross every Christmas as I can’t abide fake Christmas trees, and all those tacky lights that don’t shine because it’s still sunny in NZ in December. I do TRY and stay quiet (not easy for me...) Autumn is no problem because the trees do all the hard work of decorating themselves - imagine the hassle of pinning red leaves on all those high branches. Of course, I’d love to see Arrowtown full of real spring flowers, but are we all going to empty our gardens each morning to make the town beautiful? It might be fun to do it for a day - maybe for Daffodil Day next year and sell them all in the evening? But the team who put up the flowers deserve huge credit - it is fun for a change and it does make the buildings look pretty until the hanging baskets take over with their summer flowers. I’ve been seeing the district with fresh eyes this week - I’ve got a group of girlfriends from all over NZ and each year we do a big hike somewhere. The group has been going so long that now we have a lot of new knees and old joints that don’t like tough hikes or DOC huts so this year it was decided we’d stay in one place and do day walks. They were totally blown away - we did Sam Summers, the Routeburn Flats and Jacks Point. Walking with friends who’ve never done them made me realise how extraordinarily lucky we are to have so much sensational landscape available for our year round enjoyment. Even hardened old me had to pinch herself as we drove up towards Glenorchy on a dead calm, sunny spring day - utterly divine…

Local Collective, established in Queenstown this year are out on a mission to ensure local people can experience local honey that is pure, raw and extracted in a sustainable and ethical way- whilst the bees are nurtured and cared for properly. They also have a passion for educating people on the importance of bees and taking care of them in a sustainable way. These initiatives include hosting beekeeping social evenings at the Sherwood, which welcomed international honey connoisseur Maureen Conquer, Apiculture New Zealand CE, Karin Kos, and well known multi generation Otago beekeeper Russell Marsh to present. Be. Local, together with Honey & Cocoa Arrowtown is also working with pupils at Arrowtown Primary School, where volunteer students learn basic beekeeping skills right through to sales under their own label for school fund raising. This will give our youth a greater understanding of bees and their importance to world. Globally there is a major issue with bees dying. They are responsible for pollinating 70% of the worlds fresh produce- as well as cotton, coffee, cacao and even most of our local Central Otago fruit wouldn’t be possible without commercial beekeepers and their hard-working honey bees. In the USA, the hive loss rate in recent years is about 40-50% per year! New Zealand, through strict laws and regulations is comparatively a ‘bee haven’ with hive loss rate sitting at around 10%. New Zealander’s are also passionate beekeepers and with the boom in Manuka honey hive numbers have grown from 300,000 to over 900,000 over the last 10 years. However, the honey industry is now in a major downturn with prices collapsing and beekeepers forced to sell honey well below break-even. With such change within the honey industry, now more than ever it is vital that bee health and good ethical practices are implemented, our bees and beekeepers are properly looked after, and the industry can remain sustainable for years to come. Monthly Column October sees the snow season come to an end and many of our so vital and wonderful workers servicing our ski fields head home or to other parts of the world chasing the winter. From all of Queenstown, a big thank you. What doesnâ€™t leave with them though is the battle of visa wait times for our piece of paradise. Queenstownâ€™s battle with visas is one which is continuing as wait times seem to increase more and more. While work visa wait times looked to be on the decline from the peak of 120 days, there have been more cases coming through my Queenstown office with horrendous wait times. I have written multiple times to the Minister asking for an Immigration Specialist for Queenstown but he believes the Christchurch office has enough staff to adequately process visa applications. I will continue to lobby for better services as we still face many staff shortages in the area. I have also been working hard lobbying the Government for a change in zoning for the accommodation supplement in Queenstown. The fact that Shotover Country and Lake Hayes Estate could even be considered rural is crazy and it needs to be addressed. The rezoning would mean an extra $120-$150 per week for some people in these areas, which will make a huge difference. In many cases, it is the make or break in what bills are getting paid. I have been lobbying the Housing Minister hard on this issue and will continue fighting until we get a result. Last month I attended the wonderful Winter Pride festival and I even got to judge the Doggy Drag Show. Queenstown is renowned for its events like Winter Pride and Winter Fest and they always make for a fantastic time in the area. With all of these events on in the area it does provide a big job for our emergency services, a lot of them volunteers. I caught up with area manager Keith and some of the Fire and Emergency Crew recently to hear about operations in our area. I think we all know we are in safe hands and all of our local crews do a fantastic job. All we have to do is look at the Skippers Canyon fire and how well it was controlled and put out by the team. These volunteers rush towards danger, while most people go the other way. After lobbying since being elected as the MP for CluthaSouthland two years ago, I was thrilled to finally learn Queenstown will be getting an independent hospital. Queenstown has been crying out for better health services for years and the announcement means this can now become a reality. I believe Queenstown lost an opportunity back in the 1990s when community-owned health trusts were set up across Otago and Southland, but not Queenstown. Community-owned health trusts work because the community owns the facility and takes control of its own destiny by making the decisions locally for their residents. The entire community is thankful for the work of Andrew Blair, the Central Lakes Trust and Southern Cross in providing the solution for a district in critical need of better access to health care. The hospital is fantastic news for Queenstown.

I worked ridiculously hard with my business partner Kaylie Harrison to create our gorgeous, boutique Appearance Medicine & Skin Therapy Clinic. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? 4 years. We moved because my partner got too hot in Queensland, Australia. Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? Humans share at least 50% of their DNA with bananas?!?!?! What's the best bad decision you ever made? Moving to Christchurch with my ex but then meeting my partner. What's on your bucket list? Starring in a music video. If you were an animal, what would you be? A bird of prey. I would love to know the feeling of sawing through the sky but not having to worry about predators. What is the first thing you notice about a person? Posture! It’s a physio thing. What is your favourite season and why? Argh that’s too tough to choose. Probably summer, I grew up on the beachwater, sun, minimal clothing, tanned skin and also there is always snow in Japan if I need a hit. What is something you like to do that other people would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? I’m a little obsessed with going through the targets/figures for my business, as in several times a day I can be found recalculating them. What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? Useless- I have a photographic memory for the most random and useless things. Valuable - Multi-tasking. What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? Not a joke as such, but going through old school photos with friends always has me in stitches- the fashion, the non-existent eyebrows- what were we thinking haha. What slang or trend makes you feel old? Laughing about Seinfield episodes and having a young person not even know what Seinfield is. What’s your best piece of advice? Stand up tall, brush your teeth twice a day and put sunscreen on your face every morning.

Life is for living not for looking

Note from Editor: Over the last 4 weeks we’ve used this space to look at Mental Health in many different lights. Hearing from people who deal with it, who look at measures to relieve it, who advocate for awareness and do something about it. New Zealand is not immune, mental illnesses are common among us “You’re not alone if life is really hard for you at the moment. Anxiety and depression are really common in New Zealand. One in five of us are going to experience it this year. But it is different for everyone…” Sir John Kirwan - New Zealand Rugby Union Coach and former All Black Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher had some profound thoughts on happiness. Here’s an excerpt from the book ‘Homo Deus’ by Yuval Noah on Epicurus philosophies around human happiness. When Epicurus defined happiness as the supreme good, he warned his disciples that is is hard work to be happy. Material achievements alone will not satisfy us for long. Indeed, the blind pursuit of money fame and pleasure will only make us miserable... Epicurus was apparently on to something. Being happy doesn’t come easy. Despite our unprecedented achievements in the last few decades, it is far from obvious that contemporary people are significantly more satisfied than their ancestors in bygone years. Indeed, it is an ominous sign that despite higher prosperity, comfort and security, the rate of suicide in the developed world is also much higher than in traditional societies... Even if we provide free food for everyone, cure all diseases and ensure world peace, it won’t necessarily shatter that glass ceiling. What we’ve learnt in these conversations, is that it’s not necessarily the answers that provide relief. It’s ok to not be ok some days. When days are difficult take time to unwind, use your support networks - talk to someone you trust. As a support person be there to listen. It’s time we get in tune with our Hauroa, our wellbeing, the physical, mental and emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of health look at the structures that make up our mare, our house and tend to the section needs attention. Can’t we use a better, more positive term? You say the word ‘Mental’ and immediately people say ‘oh gosh there’s nothing wrong with me!’ I could be as nutty as a fruit cake and I will never know. As a volunteer for Victim Support I can see how much anxiety the person gets when they’ve been told they will be assessed for ‘mental health’

People need to learn to release! I unwind by cranking up Rock’n’Roll like Neil Diamond and dancing around the place or singing out loud with Roy Orbinson. Sometimes I release by baking - feeling the immense satisfaction to whack dough with a spoon! As a Funeral Celebrant, I often help people through the coming of grief - depression? (Is the much of a difference?) I walk with them an get them to talk on their own accord - listening can help soften the sadness. Sometimes you don’t need to give the answers but just listen. Maybe it’s time we took the time to really listen, to smile and welcome a persons presence. To look at the person not our phones. To live the moment. Life is for living not looking.

But it’s then they can be given the help they need. It needs a word change, I don’t use that word - EVER. That’s the worst word in the English language because if you’re arm’s broken you can see it, when something breaks in your mind, it’s not visual. Honesty is important. We frequently add to the stress by our pretending everything is fine. Saying that we are always fine gives a false impression that our life is perfect, and that is seldom the truth. I believe we need to think of preventative measures instead of a mead treatment at the end of a breakdown.

Whether this be by offering a cup of tea, a listening ear or even encouraging someone to talk to a professional – we can all support each other through mental health struggles at some point or another.

Many other organisations offer forms of support in the mental health space.

Let’s keep talking about what is going on for us to keep our mental health well.

Many of us may know someone who has needed mental health services at some point in their lives and we are lucky to have these wonderful organisations available for support.

This includes talking about the good and the not-so-good.

Closer to home you can always lend a hand of your own to someone who needs it.

The lake is also a great fishing spot. It’s deep, narrow, and lightly fished, giving amateur and professional anglers alike a good chance of pulling out a trout, landlocked salmon, or even a perch. Take a hike (or a ride!) Pedal your way through our diverse landscape. We are truly a cyclist’s paradise with easy rides around our lakefront and tricky singletracks aplenty. In town, you will find a great bike park that includes a BMX-track and a mountain bike jump loop. Cromwell and its region also offers more than enough hikes to keep your walking shoes happy. Play a round or two Tid you know? Cromwell is home to New Zealand’s most inland links course. This interesting and challenging course is not a resort course, but absolutely “the best of the rest”. With its gently undulating fairways and subtle use of mature trees, you will have to use every club in the bag before you reach the 19th hole. Central Otago’s Fastest Family Show on Earth Starts Labour Weekend Saturday By Ross Lindsay

After chilly winter months of anticipation, the 2019-20 season at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway in Sandflat Road, Cromwell, roars into clayflinging action on Labour Weekend Saturday (Oct 26). What makes this Season Opener even more of an adrenalin-pumping holiday weekend attraction is the launch of the Civil Construction Southern Sprintcar Series. The brainchild of Central Motor Speedway promoter and sprintcar champ, Jason Scott, the Civil Construction Sprintcar Series is thought to be the country's first where in all heats and feature races the fastest drivers start at the back of the grid. "Instead of spectators having to wait a good few laps for fast drivers to start threading their way past lapped cars, in this series the heart-stopping excitement of risk-it-all passing manoeuvres pretty much start at the drop of the green flag," explains Jason. "Another benefit of this format is giving slower or newbie drivers at the front of the grid a clear track to really get their Jandals hard down on the accelerator. For their part, having to pass cars from the flag drop is a sure-fire way for fast drivers to further up-skill. After round one here at Central Motor Speedway where you can expect to see some 20 sprintcars on the track with a good mix of old hands,T young guns and rookies, we head for Round 2 on November 14 at Riverside in Invercargill. Then it's on to Beachlands in Dunedin with the final here on March 21 at the Daryl Ainsley Memorial Meeting." As well as sprintcars, classes racing this Labour Weekend Saturday include saloons, super saloons, six shooters, productions and youth ministocks. Some of the drivers, especially in youth ministocks and six shooters are newbies, others are a little rusty and old rivalries are bound to surface. All the ingredients are there for a night full of speedway fireworks on the 500 metre 'avocado-shape' track in Sandflat Road. Gates open at 4pm with racing starting at 6pm. Next up on the Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway calendar is the Ron Spriggs Memorial Meeting on Saturday, November 9. This meeting celebrates the memory of Ron Spriggs, the Invercargill panelbeater whose vision and tenacity created Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway. Also in November is the always popular Valvoline Holden Trade Club Speedweek. Starting with Round 1 at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Thursday, November 21, the 20 or so top saloon drivers then travel to Riverside Speedway for Round 2 on Friday followed by Round 3 at Dunedin’s Beachlands Speedway on Saturday before driving all the way to the Ellesmere Speedway near Christchurch for the final on Sunday, November 24.

An honest conversation about parenting Emily Writes is a blogger, editor and mother of two. She didn’t set out to be a writer, but a rant in the dark that went viral has led to two best-selling books, a play and a spate of speaking engagements, including at the inaugural Queenstown Writers Festival (9th & 10th November, tickets via Eventfinda.co.nz). “The post that kicked it all off was only meant for two friends,” she explains of her first late-night post about parenting, “I didn’t know it was public. I couldn’t fit the rant into a text so I wrote a post and sent them a link. That’s why it was more honest. I got about 15,000 emails overnight and realised that others felt the same way, and that this is an important conversation.” She continued to blog, leading to the best-selling book, ‘Rants in the Dark’ which was recently turned into a play that’s been touring New Zealand this year. (“I hope it is a friend in the dark for exhausted parents,” she says of the book). She’s also the editor of The Spinoff Parents, where she covers topics about parenting and children… and occasionally, capybaras. Her second book, ‘Is it bedtime yet?’ looks at a diverse range of parenting experiences from across New Zealand. “It’s half my writing, half writers from around New Zealand. I wanted to gather diverse experiences of what parenting is like in New Zealand, to see those differences. Writing the books has been lovely. Life has really changed… I’ve got wonderful readers, people who’ll message me for a coffee and a chat.” Emily will chat with readers at the Queenstown Writers Festival on 9th November. “I’ll talk about parenting, but I find that when we get together, we’ll talk about lots of things. Some risqué topics will end up coming up and it’ll end up becoming a fun night out. I don’t do intellectual/academic… I like to have a laugh!”
