It’s a truth universally acknowledged that on any day of the year there’s always something happening in Queenstown. While we’re known as the adventure capital of the world and high adrenalin activities have put Queenstown on the map, there are plenty of options for the more sedate amongst us. There is no shortage of community events, many seasonal - Arrowtown Autumn Festival, Queenstown Winter Festival, Winter Games, Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival, the list goes on. Over the last few years various new festivals have emerged such as the hugely successful LUMA light festival. Other longstanding festivals continue to flourish and bring the local community together. With an increasing population and more than 2.3 million passengers coming through Queenstown Airport in the last year along with those arriving by car and bus, there’s an audience for a diverse range of events. It’s all good for the local economy, employment and what can only be described as the vibe of the place. Festivals and events that celebrate and endorse the arts have increased in recent years and now we have a newcomer on the scene. In November this year the inaugural Queenstown Writers Festival will be held at the Sherwood. A charitable trust has been established to present this festival celebrating the wonders of the written word. This inaugural event involves two workshops and six authors talking about their work in conversations with local people. Plans for the future include a short story competition, a school’s programme and a range of novelists, poets, bloggers and non-fiction writers. J D Salinger is mainly known for writing the American classic, Catcher in the Rye. He’s also known for this quote - “What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though” Mr Salinger makes a good point. However, it does sometimes happen and that’s exactly what a readers and writers festival is all about. On the second weekend of November Queenstown residents and visitors will have the chance to talk to authors whose work they have enjoyed and to find new favourites. The Festival includes novelists Maxine Alterio, Laurence Fearnley, historian and journalist Tom O’Connor, children’s writer and blogger Jane Bloomfield and parenting blogger Emily Writes. It’s hoped that this new festival will become an annual event on the Queenstown calendar, enriching the local arts scene while supporting both writers and local businesses. Southern Lakes voters have spoken and re-elected Jim Boult to the run the region. Jim and Karen celebrated the win with friends, family, and supporters at a gathering at their Lake Hayes home on Saturday.

Bookbinding and Japanese fish: the art of printmaking with Sue Marshall Arrowtown-based artist Sue Marshall was first introduced to printmaking at high school. “I loved it and I loved drawing and painting. I went to art school, but I was very young – you know what it’s like, at that age you’re not really sure what you’re doing,” she says.

Art News Gross Domestic Product One of the world’s most famous artists has opened a shop in Croydon town, London. Street artist Banksy, known for his street art, self-shedding art pieces and unexpected installations, opened up a shop called Gross Domestic Product without prior notice on 1st October. The shop has quickly attracted large crowds, with school groups and passers-by queuing to peer through the shop windows. Among the products are a cradle mobile made from CCTV cameras and a Union Jack stab vest designed for the rapper Stormzy. The products are only available to buy online.
She instead became a nurse and spent a while caring for people, engaging that logical and caring side of the brain, before making a return to the art world later in life. She grew up in Perth, Australia and in 2013, gained a BA in Fine Art, majoring in printmaking from Curtin University in Western Australia. She went on to become the President of the Printmakers Association for two years, taught at a gifted and talented programme and was a relief teacher for a visual arts programme. “[Printmaking] is amazing, it’s full of alchemy. You put processes in place, you put in the work, then you pull back the screen feeling like a child, waiting for the surprise. You’re not in direct contact with the final product, you’re a participant in the outcome.” She specialises in screenprint, mono print, drypoint etching and gyotaku – a Japanese form of printing dating back to the 1800s. Gyotaku originated on Japanese fishing boats, where someone on board was responsible for hand printing the fish they’d caught onto rice paper, to record the day’s catch. Sue taught the technique to locals whilst on an Artists in Residence programme in Vanuatu last June. “It’s a very local place, it’s gorgeous,” says Sue, “I’m so used to teaching people from my own culture that this was a very different experience for me. Visual art is nurtured in the Vanuatu culture, but it is important for them to sell their goods to tourists – so they can eat. “There are many islands and many dialects and each community has their own icon – a fish, a turtle, a canoe. It’s like a trademark. They were so thrilled that I was sharing my images and methods.” Sue says the people she worked with took the gyotaku technique and “ran with it in their own way.” “It was amazing,” she adds. Sue will be sharing some of her other specialist techniques in two workshops as part of the Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival (starting 18th October, tickets via Eventfinda.co.nz). One will be focussed on mark marking for beginner through to expert artists who want to “loosen up and have fun.” The second workshop is on a Japanese bookbinding technique; “it’s a great way to showcase your poems, drawings or writing in a beautiful covering.” Sue welcomes visitors to her Arrowtown-based studio. Get in touch with her at: suemarshall4art@gmail.com or 027 3366 060.

Note from Editor: “Today was a Difficult Day.” said Pooh. “Do you want to talk about it?” asked Piglet. “No,” said Pooh after a bit. “No, I don’t think I do.” “That’s okay,” said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend. “Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you’ve got someone there for you. And I’ll always be here for you, Pooh.” And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs... he thought that his best friend had never been righter.
This week we look at the annual events that create a comfortable a space to share feelings or sometimes, to just be. These spaces don’t force conversation but are there to support those who are internally processing their own self inflicting thoughts. Whether it’s men trying to talk or just needing to grab a drink and off load some weight, everybody deals with their issues in their own ways and as supporters the best you can do sometimes is be there to listen.
Head Space Profile: Jonathan Homer Origin: Dunedin (now resides in Alberttown) Occupation: Works with at risk kids & special education (now stay at home dad) Past Event: Head Space - July 25th @lakewanakacentre How did the Headspace come about? A friend of mine had a work colleague whose son passed away through suicide. It created that spark to try and do something. I had a connection with a guy who’s Mike King’s brand ambassadors: Scott Weatherall (one of the guest speakers). We had about 35 people. I was really stoked with how the night went and the conversations I’ve had since is about having another one. Why focus on Men’s Mental Health? We don’t talk! We’re good at saying ‘Yeah it’ll be alright’ it’s the old kiwi cliché isn’t it.
How’s work going? You got anything good coming up? Any challenges with your job? Your family? generally that can lead to ‘I’m really battling with this’ and sometimes just going ‘Yeah, I get it’ - helps. We’ve got to create that space where they feel comfortable sharing but without them feeling like they’re showing any weakness. Support networks in the basin? Wanaka Mental Health Peer support I can’t speak more highly for them. Is there enough? There’s probably not enough but what we have got is really good quality people. - it can get better. It’s just a matter of just trying to change those habits and open up.
It’s really hard, for a guy, not to be able to fix something. With mental health... you don’t notice when you’re at the bottom of it, you don’t know how you get out of it. From personal experience, it’s not necessarily solutions that are the key - You just wanna be heard. How should you talk to guys? Girls try and go to the crux of the situation and guys are pretty good at being able to shut down. I think just being there with them is quite helpful.

Dance for Awareness Profile: Amy Fraser Origin: Worthing, West Sussex (now resides in Queenstown) Occupation: Harry Pool Bar Past Event: Taboo - 8th of September @ barmuda Taboo was thought up by a group of friends working across various venues in Queenstown, united by a common goal. We all have individual experiences of how and why mental health affects us. From this, we decided it was time to raise awareness and begin further conversations amongst a bigger audience into mental health. And if not us, who? We had a platform available to us to put on an event which invites people to congregate in a safe environment whilst feeling secure and confident to converse about the topic.
The more people we speak to, the more people we discover have a story of relation. Why are we all suffering alone in silence when we’re all in it together?
After considering what attracts people together the most in Queenstown, we settled on one answer: Music.
Through the hospitality chain across town, knowing many friends through all venues and all companies, it has become apparent that there is a certain correlation to an extent with the job environment and mental health issues. As with any job, the long shifts, struggling a healthy work and social life balance and stressful environment all play a part in cases of anxiety, stress and depression.
Live music, ping pong tournaments and local DJs all donating their time and passion for the cause. We made sure to create a positive atmosphere where people are mingling and relaxed, safe and secure being able to discuss with others their struggles and the services that are available to them if needs be. We have posters, chalk boards, and mirror messages up informing people of the charities we support through the event, the work they do and the phone number for them should anyone feel the need to talk further with trained professionals. Taboo’s driving force and biggest aim is always to get people talking.
If only one person left our events now knowing there was a service available to them where they can confide their struggles to a trained professional in the field, or even learning something about a friend they didn’t know before, then we did what we came to do. Even if, only one.

“No Parking” vs “ No Standing”
I am no lawyer but internationally there seems to be a distinction between “No Parking” vs “ No Standing”. I think we as citizens generally “get” the difference. “Parking” usually denotes the driver “leaving a vehicle” and “Standing” refers to the diver NOT leaving the car. Clear enough. So when one looks at the signage on these zones...it does state clearly No parking. Understood. But what is obviously not understood is that a 10 second drop-off-or-pick-ups will absolutely attract a ticket. The sign does NOT state this. And it would be reasonable to reflect that the sheer volume of tickets issued since the introduction of this approach would indicate that most motorists do/did not appreciate this point: while there IS
a difference the world over..there isn’t in Queenstown. (Really?.) Moreso...it would also VERY strongly indicate the need for a drop-off-or-pick-up zone for the many folks/families/tourists etc to be able to stop a vehicle (not “park”) somewhere without fine or consequence while kids/ staff enter or exit a vehicle. Your parking warden policing such a continuously moving stream would find that few abuse it & the task would self fund. If a lawyer was to explore the legal distinction between the two words and discover that there is indeed a difference in law, I suggest they’d be swamped with clients from Queenstown. Case closed.

Hospital Congratulations to Southern Cross and Central Lakes Trust in having the foresight to build a hospital in Queenstown, one of the countries fastest growing regions. Where does the SDHB fit into this partnership however – NOWHERE!!!!!!. Instead of investing in health infrastructure that will meet the regions growing needs into the future, that SDHB is charged with doing, they are going to line up with the other health insurance companies and rent some space? Seriously that’s the long term plan!!!!
In all other developed places it’s the government agency that takes the lead and brings in partners and together they build the hospital that meets everyone current and future needs. Not here, I’m not seeing any meaningful input from SDHB at all. Just a loose rental agreement which I bet will put a public hospital on the never, never and isn’t going to help locals who rely on the public system in any meaningful way. Such stupidity.

WORLD CUP 2019 Schedule (NZ Time) Typhoon Hagibis, Haggis, Macaroni and Cheese. Whatever you call it the big disrupter in Japan wasn’t the Japanese weather but the Japanese rugby team. Thanks to Japan NZ now plays Ireland in the quarter finals, England play Aussie, France play Wales and the plucky Japanese play South Africa. You would be a fool to think any of these games are a foregone conclusion, particularly that NZ/Ireland game. Considering the number of red cards dished out already this World Cup, literally anything can happen. It’s knockout rugby now and the pressure does strange things to normally predictable outcomes. Aussie only need one good game to send England packing and we all know what the French can pull off. Japan have beaten South Africa before, and we don’t need reminding Ireland have beaten the All Blacks 2 out of the last 3 times they have played.

Wakatipu Reforestation planting program has a record year. The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust had their last planting day on Saturday and 2019 was a record in many ways. There was a record numbers of both volunteers and also plants planted, with the result that they are hugely grateful to all the community support that spread the word and of course to everyone who took time out to come and help plant! Even before Saturdays planting the number for the spring plantings will be over 6000 plants, which brings a 2019 year total of approximately 11.000 native plants in the ground. The volunteer numbers have ranged from 50 - 90 for each of our planting days this spring, and have been from such a diverse cross section of our Wakatipu community! The trust grows almost all the native plants from seed and cuttings sourced from local remnant forest, which are carefully grown in their community nursery in Kelvin Heights. Supplying 10,000 plants per year is quite an undertaking for a volunteer led organisation, and after such record numbers of volunteers turning up to help plant, their nursery is looking a little empty!! So, if you have some time and interest the trust would love support of more keen gardeners to join them and help grow plants for the next year(s) planting projects. The Trust hosts volunteer days and evenings every week, it is drop in style, so the community is welcome to come along whenever it suits, and no experience is required. It is always social, lots of fun, and a chance to learn a lot about our special Wakatipu native flora and fauna from some regular volunteers who have a wealth of knowledge and experience.

WHERE TO FIND US? INSIDE REMARKABLE GIFT SHOP
by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Phew - the elections are over and fingers crossed that this term will see a lot more listening to the ratepayers and a lot less bureaucracy - maybe more people who actually do things and not so many out of town consultants and people hiding behind computer screens. It was fun meeting Heath Copland who’s the Arrowtown councillor - I didn’t vote for him but definitely would have, if we lived in the Arrowtown ward - who wouldn’t want an intelligent, handsome, YOUNG councillor?. Really and truly, let’s try and encourage more young candidates for next time - it’s so important to get their feedback on these big issues - they’re the ones who will have to live with all the decisions that are being made now. They might see less need for quite so many old people’s homes and megamansions. A propos of young briliance, I’m loving Niamh Peren’s progress with her Thumbs Up New Zealand campaign she’s up to 40,000 signatures and aiming for 50,000 by the end of the month. She wants a green thumbs up sticker on all packaging to show if it’s recyclable or not - how simple is that? If you don’t know Niamh, just google her (you’ll definitely want to support her after reading it!). This local girl is only 30 and makes movies and writes stories that make people see the world a different way. That kind of energy is needed to make change and the team that have set up the Remarkables Cancer Gym have that in spades - the opening ceremony had Dr Lynette Jones from Otago University talk about why exercise makes all the difference if you’ve had cancer. There’s not a shred of doubt that the old-fashioned brisk walk in the great outdoors works wonders and the social and mental benefits of getting your body sweaty and stretchy in a group exercise class are just as important as the physical ones. If you’ve ever had breast cancer (men get it too), contact the Events Centre for a consultation to see if you’re eligible to take part. This is a massive bonus for the Wakatipu - lucky us. I think I’ve said it before, but having cancer isn’t all bad - a lot of partyloving people get it, and the Cancer Society do a fabulous job of organising fun events. The Great Gatsby Ball is on November 23rd and you can book your tickets at shantelle.cg@cansoc.org.nz. If you’re new to town, it’s the easiest way to meet a whole lot of locals, and if you’re already a local, book a table of ten and invite some of the newbies I’m so grateful for the way all the locals welcomed us when our weirdo, ignorant family arrived here in 1969. Shy newbies who want to come, do feel free to contact me. There were no shy people at Marion Botherway’s 50th birthday toga party on Saturday night- huge happy birthday to this hugely community minded woman - I don’t believe she really is 50 - she’s got the energy and looks of someone far younger. Thanks for everything you do for so many people, dear Marion.

Urban folk also face hard questions on freshwater by Simon Davies, President Federated Farmers Otago
Having spent most of the last three weeks dissecting, attending meetings and worrying about the Government’s proposed freshwater policy package and how it is likely to affect pastoral farming I went on holiday with the family. To be fair, the family went on holiday and left me behind while I did the tailing (earmarking, castrating and inoculating) of my lambs. Once tailing was finished I joined them in Dunedin for a few days. While I was there I got to thinking about the freshwater policies again, but with an urban bent. Given I do not have the same intimate knowledge of urban freshwater as I do of rural freshwater, there is definitely more hypothesis involved in this discussion. As I watched for the third time a lady bring her dog down to the neighbouring unoccupied section so it could go to the toilet, I thought about where dog poo ends up. It eventually flows down into the stormwater system. Stormwater, which will also contain bird poo (less commonly known as a direct source of e. coli), wash off the street (highly contaminated with rubber, petroleumbased contaminates and heavy metals), litter, cigarette butts and biological waste, will flow through the pipe network to be finally discharged into the nearest large freshwater body. In many towns and cities around New Zealand, in times of high rainfall stormwater infiltration overwhelms sewerage systems, leading to human effluent also ending up in urban streams, rivers, harbours and beaches. Under the new freshwater policies all this water will have to be treated to meet the new National Policy Statement and National Environmental Standards. I wonder if urban ratepayers have any idea how much this will cost them?
To be fair, district and city councils are aware of this issue, and I believe are grappling with the significant implications. But I am not sure they are yet to realise the full potential costs of these new standards, and thus be in a position to tell their ratepayers what’s coming at them. Probably – like Federated Farmers – the councils’ policy experts are frantically trying to analyse the Resource Management Act and cost implications of the proposed new standards in time to make informed submissions before the ridiculously tight 31 October submission deadline. As some sectors of society demand “swimmable rivers” (year round, even though temperatures mean most folk only take a dip in summer), it is important to realise that it comes with a price tag. As a farmer I can assess how much these policies are going to cost my farming business. I’m not sure urban residents can say the same. Through your rates you will have to cough up for multi-million dollar upgrades of ‘three water’ (drinking water, stormwater and sewerage) systems and treatment plants within your districts. Are you happy for a few to dictate to all of us what we must have, irrespective of the costs? Yes, town and country needs to take more action on water quality where it’s degrading. But we should target catchment hot-spots, not usher in costly blanket rules which in some areas will add little or nothing to environmental values. Having the “Rolls Royce” of something this great, but not at the cost of everything else. It is one thing to have aspirational targets, but they need to be tempered with what is affordable and achievable. When you see your council rates running at double or even triple inflation, it will be too late to ask the hard questions because the legislation will be passed.

LEGEND OF THE WEEK Name: Jess Brooke What’s your role and how did you get into your position? Store manager! I obviously got promoted because I am so good at selling booze. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? Been here nearly 3 years, I used to be so anxious of doing anything by myself so one day literally went .... ..! I’m going to New Zealand, get out that comfort zone! I quit my job got a flight by myself, with no plans and it’s the best decision I ever made! I chose Queenstown as a friend was already here, I had no idea it was a ski town or a party town or that I would still be here now! Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? 100% visit the amazing wineries and my favourite outdoor mini golf (before it gets knocked down :( ) What's your favorite place to eat? Miss Lucys or Spice Room takeaway. If you were stranded in QT with only 1 item, what would it be? An earthquake box, sorted! What has been your best/worst date? My best and worst date was taking my bf to a friend’s wedding in Bali, however my passport was ONE DAY under having 6 months left so we spent one night in Brisbane, got a cheeky nandos, missed the wedding, came back with 4L worth of duty free, lost a lot of money but we had a good time and he didn’t leave me haha. Who is your inspiration? Mel Stadler! She owns a very successful bar in town which took a lot of hard work to get off the ground, she is a great friend and really looks out for everyone, so many people adore her she is the Queen! What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? My staff member Beth’s story at Yonders story slam… Jesus... What's the best bad decision you ever made? Finally trying a cheese roll… after joining the gym recently... sh*t! What's on your bucket list? Just really to see more of the world. I have never been travelling! What is the first thing you notice about a person? Their manners! What is your favourite season and why? Spring, I would love to say Summer but... BUGS :( What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? I can make an owl noise, not found a good use for it yet. My most valuable skill is my impeccable balance or the ability to live on 5 hours sleep a night. What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? Do you like Fishsticks? What slang or trend makes you feel old? CROP TOPS why is everything a crop top! If you won a million dollars what would you spend it on in QT? Get a place, a dog, a baby goat, a jet ski and open a proper English sandwich shop! What’s your best piece of advice? Make sure you have 6 months left on your passport before going to Bali!

CATALYST’s goal is to provide the spark needed to bring great ideas, compelling speakers, innovative and informed thinking and creativity to the Wakatipu basin. We’re about making Queenstown a community for people who enjoy mental and cultural stimulus, not just adrenal challenge. We promote and encourage informed community debate on important public issues. We aim to up the ante on the stuff that matters. Queenstown is renowned for innovation, entrepreneurship and creative pursuits. It is home to a community rich in leaders of business, academia and the arts. Many of our visitors embody and aspire to these same ideals. Catalyst targets this essence - the energy, creativity and challenge to move forward - by offering opportunities to learn about, interact with and explore options around the issues that affect the future of us all. Catalyst invites you to celebrate Labour Weekend in Queenstown with MindJam - tickling your brain as we tackle the big issues in a series of informal café conversations, stitched together by some of New Zealand’s (and the world’s) leading thinkers. The hour-long MindJam sessions are guided by guest experts, but it is our questions, thoughts and discussion that make MindJam. Seats are free but limited.

SITUATIONS VACANT
The Job Market accelerates but there are signs of weakness. Without the tourism sector the Queenstown employment market would be in decline. Overall the September job market was good news for job seekers with 968 open positions being advertised across the month.
Highlights • September was the largest month of the year for open roles advertised in Queenstown - up 5% on September last year and 25% on August. • Year to date the Queeenstown jobs advertised is trailing 2018 by 4% • The accommodation and Food and Beverage sectors drove Septembers growth with 100 additional roles advertised this year. • Most other sectors declined • Construction roles remained tight due to the amount of building underway and planned which includes major announcements for new construction at the old Wakatipu High school site and the new hospital in Frankton. Early October is continuing a strong growth trend but not to the same energy as September.
Jobs Available Daily For Construction And Trades. Jobs aplenty! Register today, work tomorrow! Full-time and part-time hours available. We have jobs for: • Construction Labourers
• Painters and Brush-Hands
• Landscapers and Landscape Labourers
• Hammer-Hands
• Commercial and Residential Carpenters
• Excavator Operators
We can offer you weekly pay, great rates, immediate starts and short and long term assignments. Our team of consultants have over 15 years combined experience of trade recruitment in Queenstown. Come and see us TODAY. We’re at 66 Stanley Street, next to SBS Bank. Or call 03 442 8553.
While the roles available in the visitor market grew and drove the whole market up, the rest of the sectors declined 22%. Construction, transport, retail, health, auto finance were all down on last year. The travel sector which has been languishing all year did grow slightly. Overall while a very strong month, the year to date number of openings is still lagging 5% due to a very slow employment market for the first half of the year. The number of open roles rose 5% on last September and was the strongest month of the year by a long way. September was a standout and grew significantly even when compared with the month prior, growing 25% on August as the market accelerated away. The main driver was a significant rise in both; the hospitality and food & beverage sectors where there was a 100 additional roles open as compared with September 2018 and 135 more than August 2019. The two sectors accounted for 82% of all roles and increased their share of the job market by 5%.
