A frequent topic of discussion during the current Local Body Election campaign has been the provision of health services in our district. Healthcare in the Queenstown Lakes is the responsibility of the Southern District Health Board. This entity covers the whole of Otago and Southland and operates the principal hospitals at Dunedin and Invercargill as well as the smaller hospitals, such as ours at Frankton. I understand completely that the DHB has massive challenges ahead of it in building a replacement hospital at Dunedin. I am fully supportive and know this is vital for our region as a whole. The DHB has recently upgraded parts of Lakes District Hospital and that is to be applauded. However, the frustration I hear from many in the community, is the need to travel to either Dunedin or Invercargill for minor surgical procedures. This usually involves taking a friend or family member able to drive after the patient has had anaesthetic. Therefore, what should be a reasonably simple process becomes two people traveling out of the district for the day, most likely requiring time off work and cover for responsibilities. Similar issues arise for Maternity Services. While primary birthing facilities are available in the district, only very straightforward births result in children actually being born here. Any sign of complications, especially for first time mothers, again requires a trip to Invercargill. At a time where Mums and Dads have their hands full and when families should be together it’s sad to see the additional pressure of travel and further time off work and away from older children. I’m heartened by plans to establish a private hospital to be established on the Queenstown Country Club site, to be run by Southern Cross. The DHB have confirmed, (subject to details around pricing and the like), they will fund treatment for day procedures and some overnight procedures at the Southern Cross Hospital. This will be a very welcome addition to current services available here and mean that everyone can access them, not just those with medical insurance. I do however believe that longer term, the DHB will need to face the requirement of a greatly improved public health service in our district.

PLANNING YOUR
Mental health services in our district are also seriously lacking. The pressure on our fantastic emergency services and the small number of mental health professionals is enormous – especially in emergency and acute situations. We need a far greater level of support for both users of the service and the professionals in this space. In summary, while there are good signs - with the Southern Cross hospital on its way and the improvements at Lakes District Hospital, there’s a massive amount yet to be done to ensure the people of the Queenstown Lakes get the healthcare they deserve. 50kms per minute on the Sunshine Strip
Peninsula Road (Kelvin Heights) speed limit changes soon to be 40 & 50kms p/h. The current 50 & 70kms/p/hr is rarely adhered to, I know because I always drive to the limit, and pretty much always have tailgaters who can’t wait to pass. I get it, trust
me - it’s a bit slow at 50, but hey - I don’t make the rules. I can’t see it being safer, just more frustrating for those who already deem the limit irrelevant. It’s plain crazy and I see it as dangerous. Thoughts anyone?

TEDTEXT - Climate Strike Protest Speaker 1. I’m struggling to see how protesting does anything but make people angry. It’s such a negative form of persuasion. I’m just trying to understand the perceived outcome of the protests, not the movement itself. Speaker 2. I respect everyone’s right to protest and I don’t think any less of anyone for attending. I agree with Speaker 1. 500 people attended the protest during school time / work time, yet a community tree planting day the following morning which was a weekend attracts 60 people. Why didn’t it attract 500? Climate change is very emotive movement and people connect with its seriousness on a very personal level, but beyond vocalising these concerns actually don’t seek to implement much action. That’s all I’m saying. It’s not the message or the cause it’s just the sensationalism and prioritising associating oneself with the climate change movement over actually getting on with it. Speaker 3. The purpose behind Friday’s peaceful march is two fold: 1) Show our local / regional / central government that the climate crisis is a serious concern to the public and we need systemic change, and leadership in that change. We have a great opportunity now, before 12 Oct, to be voting in our local / regional elections for people who will influence the process through which decisions are made, and who can put pressure on central government in ways that individuals cannot. 2) Inspire people to question whether they also value this and want to act on this. The problem with facebook comments is you’re never getting a representative sample of the population. You’re getting the 10% who are loud enough and passionate enough to say something about their certain view of the world and they are not gonna change. Behind that 10% are the 90% who may or may not be on the fence and ready to change their mind or their actions. This is the same for the public. When we take to the streets and share our views, it is partly in the hope that some people on the fence may just be swayed enough to get off it. I agree with reasonable discussion. It can be hard to reach people outside of our usual circles and positive feedback loops in everyday life though. This is not about individual actions in our homes anymore, this is far, far bigger than that - it is about supporting small business doing the right thing, challenging big business doing the wrong thing, and pressuring our governments to do the same. Speaker 4. I reckon protests raise awareness and show politicians and others that enough people are
serious enough about something to get out and say so - even if they don’t know what the solutions might be or even if they don’t understand the issue itself. Ultimately, we live in an economic system that is disastrous for our environment. How to solve this we don’t rightly know yet. People would like to maintain current lifestyles/economy AND protect environment but I don’t believe we can. I reckon the two are mutually exclusive. However, recognising and accepting the issue and that many people want to find another way is a step that gives me, as a policy and governance person, the license to think and argue for stepping off the precipice into the unknown of what happens next. Speaker 5. I’m all for a good, peaceful protest. It’s visual and it sends a message. We all know social media uses algorithms to make you feel like you’re not alone, but this makes it hard to gauge how many people actually care about this issue. I wasn’t here for the protests, but seeing the pictures made me realise it’s not just a handful of people who pretend to care on Facebook. It showed that there’s a lot of real-life people out there who really do care about climate change and the environment. Speaker 2. This is like therapy. Speaker 4’s point that people want to maintain lifestyles and save the environment is bang on - they are mutually exclusive. And that’s at current global population, let alone the 84 million additional people that join the world annually. I hate to use the G word, but what irritates me about Greta, is not her desire to change but the aggressive finger pointing at a generation that has provided her with many great things. Every generation inherits mistakes as much as they inherit the previous generations lessons, knowledge and assets. To me she is creating a division between generations when there could be at least a morsel of acknowledgement of the good that she has inherited. A hugely unpopular narrative is that of the older generation calling kids naive or ungrateful, but there is truth in it. Kids have no idea how much their lives would regress if they had to move to a lifestyle that didn’t have any environmental knock on effects. The problems are massively complex and when they say that the oldies have failed them they completely alienate an important generation. Do what you can and most importantly get planting, that’s about the most progressive change you can personally make. Debate antidepressant

Enviro Day at Cardrona
A stormy morning wasn’t able to put the damper on Enviro Day at Cardrona over the weekend. Though the morning was blustery, the sun came out to play eventually, and the storm at least had the manners to drop a load of fresh snow at the resort to celebrate the occasion. A joint project of Cardrona Alpine Resort and Protect Our Winters, Enviro Day saw Cardrona playing host to several fundraising, climate awareness, and lifestyle change initiatives all designed to draw attention to the fact that there’s a lot more NZ’s ski industry could be doing for the environment. Cardrona has led the charge among our local resorts, the first to adopt composting and the most vocal in encouraging carpooling and offering incentives to its riders and skiers. Enviro Day’s focus this year was on sustainability, with staff on hand to manage a gear swap table as well as mend old ski gear for a donation to Protect Our Winters. The kitchen got involved too, offering only vegetarian and vegan options for the day.

The growing threat of climate change has been in the news and on everyone’s minds recently, given Queentown and Wanaka’s impressive turn-out for the Global Climate Strike as well as the protests at the Petroleum Expo in late September. Since so many of Queenstown’s brands and business are dependent on winter and the flow of visitors it brings, it’s both timely and sensible for companies like Cardrona, NZ Shred, and Burton to lead the charge when it comes to environementally friendly initiatives on the slopes. While individual choices such as driving an electric car or going vegan do have an impact on emissions and pollution levels, it’s going to take industry-level action to make meaningful progress in the fight against climate change. Raising awareness of our worst offenders when it comes to the environment is important, but those who are doing their part deserve some time in the spotlight, and those who care about preserving Queenstown’s winter playgrounds will be glad to see Cardrona getting some well-earned accolades for its efforts this season.

I have lived in Queenstown for 15 years and been heavily involved with the local community. I am standing for Council because I don't believe our representatives are representing our community for the right reasons. I feel that I can give a voice of trust back to the community and ask the hard questions that are not currently being asked. A vote for me will give you conďŹ dence that you have somebody asking the right questions and oering our community common sense.

The Wakatipu Buddy Programme The Buddy Programme has been active in the Wakatipu for nearly 20 years. There are currently 30 Big Buddies matched with 30 Little Buddies in the Wakatipu. Big and Little Buddies have 2-3 hour outings doing fun low or no cost activities such as walking, biking and baking.
Now and again there is an organised outing for all the programme such as an April Shotover Jet outing sponsored by Shotover Jet and afternoon tea at Cookie Time. This year the whole programme have been sponsored with a gondola pass from Skyline. We also had a special Skyline Stargazing Outing in August.

Children aged 4-12 years are referred by schools and social agencies like Queenstown Lakes Family Centre and Happiness House and sometimes Oranga Tamariki. This can be for a variety of reasons – such as having a sole parent or learning difficulties for the child. A recent trend we are seeing is too much screen and device time for children – the Big Buddies get the children out and about and away from screens! Feedback from families, schools and other referrers is that Little Buddies have better social skills, improved confidence and are often better behaved at home and at school. Little Buddies also develop new interests for them and their families. They thrive on the 1:1 attention. Big Buddies get fun and fulfilment from being involved as well.

The cheapest ways to fertilise your veggie garden by Ben Elms Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com
Are you imploring your employer to plan early for a memorable Christmas party this year. Years past the work party used to start early on Thursday evening and extend well into the night. The company paid for everything. There was an unwritten rule that staff came to work a little later on Friday and left earlier.
Living in Central Otago is expensive. We’re miles from anywhere. We predominantly grow grapes, cherries; there’s a few sheep, some cows; and a tiny but growing crew of market gardeners.
For the past few years they have been planned late and could have been better. “Christmas parties used to be great. Has yours become so dull that it’s not worth going to.”
Our busy lives disconnect us from the earth, but growing veggies reconnects us to the life source. Plus, it can be an inexpensive way to get healthy, nutritious food. So, get out there and start a veggie garden: there is no greater joy than picking and eating home-grown veggies!
Queenstown businesses have a tradition of putting on great Christmas work functions to say thank you to the team in recognition of the hours put in, the great face the staff have provided to the customers and just the determination put into the year.
To help your veggies grow, you don’t need to buy expensive compost from a shop. We all have a continuous supply of nutrients coming out of our home that we can capture and use to fertilise our veggie gardens for free or nearly free.
2019 should be no different and therefore we have put together some of Queenstown’s best venues but get in early as these will book out quickly.
1. Trench Composting. It’s simple and costs nothing. Dig a trench in your veggie garden and put ALL your veggie scraps in there. Bones, bread, the lot! Shred up some brown cardboard, dampen and mix in with the veggie scraps. Cover with 20 to 30cm of soil and you’re ready to go.
AND HAPPY NEW YE
AR
2. Bokashi Buckets. There’s an initial outlay of around $50 (they’re subsidised at 2 for the price of 1 from QLDC). Then, every four months it’s $10 for another bag of magic dust. Bokashi is trench composting on steroids, just without the zits and mood swings! E.M.(effective microorganisms) are used in this system, speeding decomposition and inoculating the soil with heaps of beneficial biology. ‘I love Bokashi’ stickers are available from me…
3. Worm Chimneys. Drill multiple holes into a repurposed/bought (HDPE No 2 plastic) 20 litre bucket or 50 litre bin, cut out the bottom and bury up to the lid in your veggie garden. Buy some compost worms and put in approximately 500 grams of tiger worms (again subsidised by QLDC). Three to five of these units would deal with a family of four’s food scraps. Add food scraps and damp shredded cardboard alternating between buckets. Once a year, or when full, harvest the vermicompost. The worms will be at the top and can be set aside and put back in once empty.
4. Urine. We’re peeing a great resource all day! Urine is a free fertiliser. Collect in a bucket, dilute it in a watering can and use around your veggies and fruit trees. Top tip: don’t store urine for too long as it will start to pong.

Five Reasons to have a great Christmas Function 1. Recognition of the hard work the team did over the last twelve months. Its been a tough year. Say thank you with a brilliant end of year function. 2. Many of the team don’t have a chance to get to know each other during work hours and many come from different places all over the world. Great functions can facilitate much better communication and team work later. 3. Christmas functions reinforce the team spirit and that’s important to you. 4. For the business head it’s a chance to gain valuable insights as you have time to spend with employees in a relaxed space where they will be more open to share their views. 5. Gives everyone a break and many of the team don’t know lots of people in Queenstown and this is a key time for them to feel part of the community.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Several people have asked me what CBD stands for - I don’t know either, and had just assumed it’s Central Business District but other suggestions have been Complete Bollocks, Darling or Crone Babbles Deliriously. If anyone has better ideas, I’d really love to hear them. All feedback on this column is enthusiastically received, even if it’s critical - I love knowing all the opinions on any given topic, so feel free to let me know at miranda@queenstown.co.nz I’m particularly interested in hearing who everyone is voting for in the next council elections - while there is no way of guessing who’s going to be elected, there seems very little appetite for the rampant development that has gone on in the last three years. I did meet some people who are keen on affordable housing, but at this stage, none of them are ratepayers, and all the young families I’ve been talking to who have saved and slaved to build or buy their home and become ratepayers are very much against it - why should just some people get ratepayer funded assistance to buy a house? It’s a luxury and a privilege to live here, and sorry about that, but it comes at a big cost. There are plenty of other places in the country with cheaper housing and loads of jobs available. And yes, I’m well aware that they’re not nearly as much fun or as beautiful as here. What seems most on people’s minds is to put more effort into building for the community that already exists here - creating cultural spaces for people to learn, practise and perform in, more community sports facilities, improved public transport and more places where community events can be held. Given how grim the latest tourism number predictions are looking, the upside might be that the demand for all these impossibly ugly new hotels might be so bad that noone will want more of them for the foreseeable future. And the tourists that do come might find New Zealand the lovely, empty, wild place they’d dreamed of. Anyway, whatever you want for this region, do get along and vote in the people you think will be able to achieve your wishes - and as I’ve said before, if you’re a ratepayer and young, it is even more important for you to vote. It was so nice to see so many young people at the perfomance of “The Keys are in the Margarine” last week - it’s a verbatim play about memory loss funded by NZ Brain Research. As dementia is something I’m getting a bit familiar with( can you tell from this column?) it struck so many chords with me and made me feel quite tearful. BUT it’s a problem that is growing hugely with our ever ageing population and it’s good to know as much as possible. Note to self - don’t waste any time having a horrible day somehow find the good bits and enjoy them to the full.

PROVEN LEADERSHIP
EXPLORE YOUR WAY TO WELLBEING Increasingly, more and more businesses are waking to the effects of mental health. With the average person spending 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime, the workplace can easily become the breeding ground for mental lows.
See Through/ Work Through/ Break Through Business: Huffer Located: 36b Shotover Street Theme: People Presence
Stress can often lead to anxiety, depression or burnout, all these have a knock-on effect which can impact on an individual’s relationships and their wellbeing.
Our code is to talk about the hard stuff and to never stay quiet about things that matter. The messaging of transparency is prevalent with our latest capsule ‘See through - Work through - Break through’ - the hero product in the range being a 2.5L rain shell with a transparent outer – allowing the outside to ‘see through’. $10 of each item sold will be donated to our friends at the mental health foundation. Huffer also collaborated with iconic kiwi musicians for the cause
In a Mental Health Foundation 2016 survey, of New Zealanders aged 15 years and older, showed that: 80% Either had personal experience of mental illness or knew of others who had. 30% Personally had an experience of mental illness.
“For a very long time now I’ve wanted to use Huffer as a platform to speak out through a thoughtful collaboration with a musician to spread awareness of Mental Health through music,” says Huffer Founder, Steve Dunstan
1 in 2 Meet the criteria for a mental illness at some point in their lives. Businesses around New Zealand are seeing the importance of jumping in on this ongoing conversation of Mental Health Awareness - with the bid to create an open, non-judgemental environment for their staff. Workplace culture who value employee wellbeing are linked to having the strongest productivity. This week we look to businesses who are actively becoming advocates for Mental Health. Using vision statements to embed the company’s ethos. Working with health professionals to speak about Mental Health openly to staff and public or using their brand and collaborating with musicians to create messaging to reach the masses.
Huffer is a big supporter of Mental Health Wellbeing and a continued supporter of the Mental Health Foundation, a cause very close to us. This year Huffer is taking the campaign ‘People Presence’ to a whole new level.
“I have always found artists to be universally inspiring and innately vulnerable in their ability to continuously put themselves out there and talk about the hard stuff. Huffer isn’t creating the message, just the conversation,” The track to raise awareness for mental health worked with Diggy Dupe | Spycc | Bailey Wiley and produced by IllBaz.
Bouncing Back Business: AJ Hackett Bungy Located: State Highway 6, Gibbston Valley Theme: Bouncing Back
for Wakatipu High School students and whanau (with a separate crew-only event) in December.
Businesses participation in this conversation is vital, it shows those who’re struggling whether it be staff or customer or client that ‘we care’.
Jumping from a 50m bridge with a Bungy cord tied to your ankles isn’t a decision you make with your feet. Taking that leap of faith – to live more and fear less – comes from your head.
Resources
From the company vision – ‘Live More Fear Less’ – which aims to inspire individuals to reach their full potential despite life’s challenges, AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand actively advocates the importance of mental health. Their initiatives like Bouncing Back, annual community JumpStart programme for school leavers, active participation with Mental Health Awareness Week and ongoing support of Crew help bring focus to the importance of mental health and wellbeing.
AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand co-founder and managing director Henry van Asch says the company chose to bring together the world-class line-up as a way of acknowledging the community – and incredible crew – that has supported the business for 30 years.

This year, the company – which launched the world’s first commercial Bungy jumping operation 30 years ago – brought together leading Kiwi psychologist Nigel Latta, author Lisa O’Neill and All Blacks ManagerLeadership, Gilbert Enoka to speak at two events held in each of the company’s main centres – Auckland and Queenstown. The free public event – ‘Bouncing Back’ – was attended by around 400 Auckland teenagers, teachers, Bungy crew and members of the tourism industry in May, following the success of a similar public event held in Queenstown
“Keeping mentally strong in our modern world can be extremely challenging and everybody needs a little help bouncing back sometimes. We wanted to show our gratitude to the communities we operate in by bringing these inspiring speakers together to share their expertise and knowledge on an issue that is vital to all of us.”

LEGEND OF THE WEEK Name: Rob Horrocks What’s your role and how did you get into your position? General manager, Muay Thai and Boxing coach. Originally I was helping out coaching the Muay Thai classes and then the management position became available, I had already met the team and knew they would be great to work with so I jumped on it. How long in QT and why did you choose to live here? Almost 4 and a half years. I thought Queenstown looked good because of all of the adventure sports and then somebody told me you could party and get good burgers here as well so it was a no brainer. Recommended must-do activity in and around QT? Go hiking, everywhere around here is amazing! What's your favorite place to eat? At home... take away curry from Bombay Palace. What has been your best/worst date? Went for a nice meal to a place called Panama Hatty’s in Manchester and then gave Simone, her first driving lesson in the Asda carpark. Simone and I are still together now after more than 6 years and she still can’t drive. Who is your inspiration? My parents. They have always worked hard, supported me and made me believe I can do anything. What's the most interesting thing you've read, seen or learned in the past week? I read a story about an 80 something year old lady doing Judo and how it’s gave her confidence and changed her life. What's the best bad decision you ever made? I took a Muay Thai fight on 4 days notice last month and had to loose 6kg in 3 days, it felt like a terrible decision on the way to the weigh in but I won the fight so turned out all good! What's on your bucket list? I’d love to go to Patagonia, Machu Picchu and the Pyramids of Giza. What is something you like to do that your mates would probably consider ‘’weird’’ if they knew? Never let the volume on the tv, car radio or anything else be set to 13! Not because I’m superstitious, just because I’m a weird guy. What is your favourite season and why? Summer because of the longer days and warm weather, more time for adventures! What is your most useless skill? And your most valuable? I can make an owl noise, not found a good use for it yet. My most valuable skill is my impeccable balance or the ability to live on 5 hours sleep a night. What is that one joke that you cannot tell without laughing hard? I’m not one to tell jokes really but I like to jump out from places and scare my girlfriend, that makes me laugh even if she doesn’t. What slang or trend makes you feel old? ‘yeetus delitus’ or ‘yeet’ for short. I had to ask my students in the kids kickboxing class what it meant because i didn’t know if they was being nasty to each other or not. What’s your best piece of advice? Live every week like it’s shark week!

The Summers Orchard Cottage
Arts+Culture by guest writer Miranda Spary
With so much interest in what’s happening to the old Summers Cottage opposite the Rose Douglas playground in Arrowtown since it lost its lid and is now wrapped in tarpaulin and fencing, I asked David Clarke at the museum for some info. The land was granted to William Scole in 1870, a well-known local businessman and publican. A wooden house was on the site in photos from 1874 and a miner called John Healey paid rates for a stone house on it in 1877. In the late 1980’s Jan and Don Spary bought the empty land in front of it which had been used as a town rubbish dump and thought that one day it might make a nice little housing development. Arrow Lane was unpaved at that stage and rarely used. Mrs Cotton who had lived in the cottage for years, must have been a very hardy soul. She made do with the one cold tap in the house and a wood burning stove. She didn’t even have a toilet connected to any sewerage system and apparently made quite a fuss when the council insisted she had to have a flushing one. Despite her protests, it was installed in the little shed outside, where her bath that had to be heated by lighting a fire in the boiler lived too.
What’s Happening Ride Like A Girl Dorothy Browns Cinema in Arrowtown is hosting a special Pink Ribbon advance screening of this new film to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand. It’s the true story of a young girl - the youngest of ten children raised by her single father, (our own Sam Neill). She wants to be a jockey and leaves school at 15. If you enjoy a film that’s raw and real and has beautiful horses in it, you’lll love it. When: Thursday 10th October, 8:30pm Where: Dorothy Browns Cinema, Arrowtown Tickets: $40 includes a welcome drink
Teen Brain I’m pretty glad my parents weren’t snooping around in my teenage brain when I was that age but I’m dead keen to get along to this talk - for over 6000 years adults have wondered what, if anything is happening in there and this is their chance to find out for sure.
When: Thursday, 17th October from 7:30pm - 9 pm Where: Remarkables Primary School, Frankton Tickets: $35 via eventfinda.co.nz
Colonial Businesswoman in Queenstown and Beyond Whatever you do, don’t miss this fabulous event - jazz bands and dancing and dressups - it’s all to raise money for the Cancer Society. I don’t want to depress you, but everyone has a good chance of getting cancer sometime, and the Cancer Society do a great job of making having cancer a lot more fun than you’d think possible. Certainly, a whole lot easier and they lobby like crazy to make sure all New Zealanders get access to the often very expensive new wonder drugs. All the money that’s raised at the ball will go to our local branch so be quick and get a ticket - it’s sure to sell out fast. Tickets can be bought by emailing shantelle.cg@cansoc.org.nz When: Saturday, 23 November from 7pm - 12am Where: QT Memorial Centre, Tickets: $165 - Request tickets in Messenger www.facebook.com/ events/613358999068125/
The house was less than luxurious, with two tiny bedrooms, a miniscule kitchen and a parlour that looked out up to the Arrow River. Mrs Cotton didn’t die of cold, but it’s a miracle she didn’t. There was absolutely no insulation - the walls were stone, with hessian there to hang the seventeen different (and VERY different!) patterns of wallpaper on. Stone, hessian and wallpaper do not keep anyone cosy. The wallpaper has been kept and some of it will be framed as decoration when the cottage is rebuilt. When Mrs Cotton died, the family asked the Sparys if they were keen to buy the cottage since they owned the land in front. They thought they may as well, and didn’t realise just how much work would be needed to restore it. They commissioned architect Max Wilde to design some small houses to put on the empty land which was named Summers Orchard. Max used the cottage as his office for many years. Like Mrs Cotton, he was a hardy chap and somehow managed to keep drawing even when the temperature inside was below zero. The Summers Orchard houses were built and the one nearest the fire station became the Arrowtown Montessori Preschool, while the others were all rented out. They were way ahead of the trend - tiny houses were a very new concept then - they used a lot of recycled joinery and woollen insulation. Unlike the cottage, they were lovely to live in. After Max moved out, many hours were spent working out how to restore the cottage so that it could be used - since every single bit of it needed replacing and strengthening, it wasn’t going to remain the original building at all and after literally years of negotiation, it was agreed that as long as the Wiltshire Street facade was retained, a new and cosy cottage could be built behind it. That facade nearly disappeared as well when one of the local historical societies jumped the gun and had turned up well before the agreed date - in no time at all, they had managed to take off the roof and dismantle the windows - luckily Mary Jowett, the architect of the project, drove by and saw it and put an instant stop to the demolition and an instant start to the protection of the stone facade that needs to be saved.
