2019- THE TALE OF TWO VERY DIFFERENT SKI FIELDS Every season in the ski industry is different and the 2019 season sure hasn’t disappointed in this regard. A warm wet May followed by a cold dry June made for some tough early operating conditions for both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, with historically low snowfalls to start the season. The positive aspect of these early-season conditions is that they gave us a chance to demonstrate the benefits of the huge investment we’ve made in our grooming and snowmaking systems. Coronet Peak has the largest automated snowmaking installation in the Southern Hemisphere with 215 snow guns and The Remarkables has an arsenal of 97 snow guns with a further 37 to be deployed on new trails in Sugar Basin this coming summer. Add to this the capability of satellite snow depth measurement in our groomers and you’ve got the very best slopes management possible. I’ve got to take my hat off to our snowmaking and grooming teams, who were our heroes delivering fantastic conditions at the beginning of the season in very trying circumstances. One of the biggest issues was the gossip in town about whether or not Coronet Peak in particular was going to remain open in late July. However, we truly demonstrated what we can achieve even when mother nature doesn’t quite play ball. It was a tale of two mountains in the first half of the season with Coronet Peak’s visitor numbers down overall offset by growth at The Remarkables with guests chasing the snow at higher altitudes. In the past month with good natural snowfall on both mountains, we’ve seen decent growth in visitor numbers compared to last year. Throughout the season, guests who pre-booked their holidays have come and enjoyed all that Queenstown has to offer however there’s no doubt that we lacked some of the early-season epic snow photos that attract more casual visitors; some of these visitors may have opted to head to the islands whereas some Aussies might have chosen to ski closer to home. As a result of this, we’re likely to see overall visitor numbers down on the record set in 2018. The investment we’ve made in Coronet Peak and The Remarkables has provided some insulation from what could have been a tough winter for the wider business community, and we’re committed to continuing to invest in our ski areas for the benefit of both our business as well as the wider community.

I W I live in Frankton, behind the Ramada Hotel,
and have noticed there is not much free parking available there. On the apartment complex I’m based we have one carpark spot available per apartment. In some cases this is not enough - i.e- Rental . There are few parking spots around the area but with a 90 minute allowance, meaning you could get a fine if you leave your car there for the entire day – not ideal at all. The other option Response: In this district, where cars have become part of a wider traffic problem, providing more resident carparks is not a good environmental solution. While the apartment building referred to was not built by Remarkables Park Ltd (RPL), it is less than 70 metres from a bus stop serviced by the $2 bus and has easy connections to the trails network, so other good transport options are available. RPL is continuing to work on more and better public transport services, including ferry and gondola connections.

So I would like to understand what other options we have, or if there is a better plan for the residents of this area? Getting fined for living. Ripped Jeans. I don’t get it. I’ve noticed a few ripped jeans on my day excursions into town. Every time I see a young girl wearing them, my initial thought is ‘Oh, those jeans have outlived their use, time to chuck them in the bin’. At first, I thought it was a laziness thing. That they couldn’t mead them. I was then corrected to then find that they’re actually a style. People buy new jeans with rips in them?! Even men’s fashion feature rip jeans! I don’t understand? Is it sexy to expose the
knee? Don’t they get a chill? They look tatty. I thought they would be discounted because the jeans are damaged but nope it’s a style, they still cost just the same amount as nonripped jeans!

This year celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Winter Games NZ, an event that has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception. One recent addition to the Winter Games lineup has become a crown jewel in Queenstown’s winter sport lineup: the Trans-Tasman Challenge ice hockey series between the New Zealand Ice Blacks and the Australia Mighty Roos. This year, the Ice Blacks have captured the Challenge Cup once again with their 6-4 and 5-3 victories over Australia in Game 1 and Game 2 respectively. This marks the first time in history that New Zealand have ever won back-to-back titles in ice hockey over their heated rivals. Typically, the Australian national team plays a whole division higher than NZ in the world rankings, so being able to take on the Roos and secure the title two years running is no small feat. Just like last year, the Ice Blacks were keen to complete the sweep, but Australia weren’t about to let that happen. The Roos mounted an impressive comeback effort, holding the hometown team to only two goals in the final game and scoring an eye-popping nine times. The final 9-2 score showed that they aren’t a team to be taken lightly regardless of the fact that the Ice Blacks had already claimed the title. The event saw hockey fans from all over New Zealand and some from across the ditch stream into Queenstown Ice Arena, enjoying three nights of high-scoring and hard-hitting action. Now that the regular ice hockey seasons in both NZ and Australia have wound down for the year, both teams will set their sights on the 2020 World Championships. The Ice Blacks have an opportunity to gain promotion to Australia’s division if they can snag a gold medal win in Reykjavík, Iceland. The Trans-Tasman Challenge is a friendly match and doesn’t count toward IIHF rankings, but for fans of New Zealand sport, getting to put one up on their ageold rivals is a reward in its own right.

Dr Compost’s ultimate recipe by Ben Elms
Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com If you’re starting from scratch, or expanding your veggie garden empire, you can give yourself a head start in how you treat your freshly dug-up soils or fill up your new raised beds. Looking back at my own early veggie beds, I wish I’d known what I know now. I started with straight Central Otago soil, adding compost and mulch on a regular basis. At the end of the growing season my soil looked like shit Central Otago soil again. It’s taken me years to get my soil looking good – but I’ll let you know how to start with great soil from the get-go. The trusty earthworm is a great barometer from which to measure your soil health. No earthworms? Enough said. Our goal should be a soil with earthworms everywhere, in every shovel of soil there should be earthworms.
So here is Dr Compost’s best soil recipe yet. 45% Good-looking topsoil. Beware of poor imitations! Use the best top soil you can get your hands on. Sieve it first if there’s signs of roots to avoid introducing couch grass. 45% Compost. If you’ve made it yourself – fantastic! If you’re buying it, ‘Mushroom Compost’ is the way to go. It’s rich in nutrients and organic matter. I’m yet to meet a gardener who hasn’t loved and raved about using Mushroom Compost. Start with a bang not a whimper! 10% Biochar. Use just 5-10% biochar in your veggie beds and you’re set from the get-go with all the benefits of this honeycombed, long-lasting carbon. It captures and holds nutrients and a home/feeding station for soil life.

Rock minerals. There are a few different products on the market, application rates vary. I would look at 10 cups per cubic metre. Remember to be patient as rock isn’t instantly available and requires bacteria and fungi to consume and make the minerals available to plant roots. Humates. Humates are derived from ancient organic matter (coal) they’re a fantastic food source to promote fungi in our soil. Add 10 cups per cubic metre.
Consider taking a soil test one or two years down the line to check on your soil and figure out what it needs.

The total number of confirmed Queenstown measles cases has risen to fifteen. Eight new cases were confirmed late Friday night and Saturday. Six of the new cases are NZ Ski staff who work at The Remarkables ski fields and two are primary school aged children. Of the fifteen total cases, fourteen are local residents. One was a visitor from Auckland. Chris Hipkin, The Education Minister made the announcement at Shotover Primary on Friday, Other schools in the region that will get new classrooms include Cromwell Primary and Garston schools.

Changes to KiwiBuild were announced Wednesday, the changes will take effect from 1 October 2019 and significantly impact the region especially Wanaka’s North Lake area. Kiwi Build was slated to build 211 homes in the North Lake precinct. Only 10 have been built and 20 more under construction. There have been problems selling the North Lake KiwiBuild properties based on cost and rules around ownership. The key changes announced include: The Welcome Home Loan is now called the First Home Loan and deposit is reduced to 5 percent for new and existing homes The KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant is now called the First Home Grant and deposit is reduced to 5 percent for new and existing homes The First Home Grant can now be paid to all buyers, subject to existing income caps.

Changes to KIWIBUILD will have a major impact in the Southern Lakes region. The rebuild of the Kiwibuild program will have a major impact on the current program in the region both positively, and negatively. Wanaka was one of the initial markets where Kiwibuild were slated to build 211 homes. So far, 10 have been completed and 20 more terrace homes partially completed. While advertised as ‘affordable’ the market shows these have been difficult to move with a price tag of upward of $560,000 for a two-bedroom duplex home. There are concerns on whether the remainder will ever be completed - the Government has yet to answer.

The reset is a chance to draw a line under a failing policy and make a fresh commitment to other alternative home ownership models.

Meet the artist: Jane Litten Arrowtown-based artist Jane Litten’s work can be found in private and public galleries around the world. Using oils, she paints people, landscapes and still life in a realist style. But art wasn’t her first pursuit, she started out as an Architectural Designer in her twenties and progressed to running her own business and doing commissioned-based work. Originally from Australia, Jane designed hospitals and multi-storey apartment blocks in Australia, China and Asia. She even designed the Western Australian Parliament and an award-winning Underwater World.

“I decided to retire from it because my mother passed away – both of my parents passed away close together and I wanted to spend more time with my kids.” She says she had no formal background in art and didn’t undergo any training. “Barry [Jane’s partner] asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said: paints. I’d always wanted to paint, but never had the opportunity. I grew up in a ‘medical family’ – we had one art book in the house and I was told that if I wanted to keep doing art at school, I had to pass my maths exams.” Jane got into oil painting and a friend encouraged her to hold an art show – the paintings sold out within three days and from that, more shows came about. She went on to become a founding member with the Western Australian Portrait Artist Group and was a finalist in the Black Swan Portrait Prize in 2011 and 2012, and in the 2016 Portia Geach Portrait Prize. “I really get off on painting people,” Jane jokes, “ultimately, I’m an introvert but I have a fascination with people and their stories. I like to capture this visually.” “When you look at a portrait, you see the person inside. I want to capture something that no one else can see, or something that the sitter may not be aware of themselves. “I want to paint people around me that I know so that in one hundred years, there will be a record of that living person. Photography doesn’t do that… for me. Though I’m sure there’s a lot of photographers around here who will disagree! We’re bombarded with images, but only a good one will stop you.” Jane says her background in architecture did require drawing skills (“I studied before we did it all on computers”), but most of her professional artistic development has been in the 18 years of practice since retiring from design. “There is a sense of building a painting. I do a lot of sketches. I think drawing is how I understand the world around me… it’s a craft, not a talent, to develop that hand-eye co-ordination and look. To be an artist, you’ve got to want to look, and you have to be prepared to be constantly critical of your own work.” Find out more about Jane at justquietly.nz. What we’re into The Quiet Spectacular by Laurence Fearnley Set in the South Island, The Quiet Spectacular follows three characters; librarian Lorretta, who’s decided to compile a dangerous book for menopausal women; teenager Chance who starts stuffing roadkill to avoid her overbearing mother; and Riva, the founder of a wetlands sanctuary who wants to fulfil a promise to her dying sister. All three have a connection with nature and many of the book’s key moments are set in a den in the wetlands. The book looks at how the female characters interact with nature, friends and family. It’s funny, awkward and poignant – a great read for spring!

The Rural Youth & Adult Literacy Trust - Volunteers required Monday, 9 September, was International Literacy Day and The Rural Youth & Adult Literacy Trust is appealing for more people to volunteer as Online Literacy Coaches. “One in ten New Zealanders struggle with low literacy and Online Literary Coaches provide free reading and writing lessons for rural/isolated teens and adults who can’t get to traditional literacy classes. Volunteer coaches work with students over the phone, by Skype or in person for about 3 times a week, to help them achieve their reading and writing goals. Just for half an hour each time – easy bites of learning!” Low literacy is said to cost $3 billion in lost economic and social opportunities each year, with over 1 million New Zealander’s of working age lacking the literacy and numeracy skills to participate fully in work, education and life. Not being able to read and write is often an intergenerational issue. Mums and Dads who can’t read and write themselves can’t help their children with their homework and reading, and so the cycle continues.” There are many reasons why people leave school without the skills to be able to read and write, and almost always, it’s not their fault, Online Coaches are helping to support a fellow New Zealander who has missed out previously, but who is taking positive action to improve their literacy and create new opportunities for themselves and their whanau. The Rural Youth & Adult Literacy Trust currently has over 60 Volunteer coaches, who have helped to change the lives of hundreds of students. Full training is provided and the commitment is for 2 hours a week. You can take the lessons at a time that works for you and your student and if you need to take a break at times, for a month or two, that is OK too. The Trust knows volunteers lead busy lives and have other commitments.
