Less Growth please!! We are repeatedly told that, as a high growth council, we must plan for and facilitate even more growth. Central Government has set a series of measures that Council has to report against to show it is doing its bit, with the threat often expressed that if it doesn’t deliver then Government will step in and do it for us. Well, we’ve done our bit to create sprawling suburbs and what has it delivered? • Cheaper houses – nope. • Well-connected public transport – nope. • A plethora of community halls, local convenient shops and reserves – nope. • Better, higher paid jobs – nope. • Gridlock, pollution, disenfranchisement- yup. It’s demonstrably easy to carve up large areas of land for houses and build them within a short timescale as funds for this are provided by the developer and the process has been fast-tracked by Council. Contrast that, with the time it takes e.g. to build a new bridge across the Kawarau and the frustratingly long wait for funding or the years of begging for as yet unfunded bypasses. We (the community) have had all the pain with none of the gain. Yes, some much needed land has been delivered to the Housing Trust, but Council could have just bought some or used land it already owned and achieved the same outcome. The reality of housing is that building more of it doesn’t make it cheaper. To achieve that outcome, you need a lot more public housing, a good supply of high quality regulated rental housing, a lot more social housing and controls to remove the lure of capital gains so that a house is just seen as a ‘home’. Given most of that is not within the scope of local government, it’s unreasonable to require it to endlessly carve up its land to produce yet more unaffordable dwellings and associated growing pains. It’s time to have a serious conversation around growth and take that one to Wellington rather than the message that we want more and more and just need a way to pay for it. We need to focus on using land for local food production, carbon sequestration and if it is to be developed at all then use it to supply low impact, economically productive employment that broadens our economy. Local government is about local accountability. Is there a mandate from the community for continued housing, tourism and shopping centre growth at the rate we’ve had? I very much doubt it and those in Council who tell us it’s our duty to cater for ‘more’ are simply not representing the community they live in. John Glover Candidate for QLDC

behind a clueless driver at the BP round about today, no idea what the rules were waited through multiple gaps then decided to go right when a cop was turning in front of him and nearly hit him. The cop just looked at him and waved him through. The driver then went all the way to town in front of me at 45km/h, stopped multiple times for no reason then turned right without an indicator at the
Copthorne and nearly hit oncoming traffic which had to slam on the brakes to avoid catastrophe. Fully sick of seeing driving like this, multiple times, on a daily basis and it seems so are the cops who can’t even be arsed dealing with it anymore. Time for change, don’t you think? #fed#up
Visitors are NOT Locals. I’m just annoyed by the fact that visitors who have been living in Queenstown less than a few months are referring to themselves as “locals”. You guys are not “locals”, you are visitors. Too many pommies, for example, have been proudly referring to themselves as locals yet they are on a backpackers holiday visa.
That makes you a visitor, you will eventually head home to finish Uni or work in your careers. Am I wrong to think this way? Queenstown is very transient, people leave. Locals stay for the long haul. Legit LOCALE.
What if... A migrant got mangled working for a NZ company. So badly injured that s/he would no longer be able to work? Maybe medical assistance for the rest of hers/his life? I used to work for a cleaning company, hazardous chemicals (industrial oven cleaners) and no protective equipment was provided.
I also worked for a panel beater company, I got injured lifting something too heavy and the first thing the director/owner did was to call his buddy supervisor (he wasn’t even in sight) as a witness of the accident. When I got on ACC for a few weeks my promised promotion went straight to the bin as if it were never offered.
I ended up with chemical burns all over my arms and ill from the fumes but when I took a few sick days off, the manager/ owner got very angry and threatened to fire me. I injured my arm working for a construction company which resulted in months of physiotherapy which wasn’t covered by ACC.
I want to know is what does the government do to assist if something extreme were to happen but they are not residents nor citizens? LUV Immigration, HELP.

Arts+Culture One For Budding Young Authors And Illustrators Write Like an Author, Draw Like an Illustrator workshops come to Queenstown! The popular workshop series for children, ‘Write Like an Author and Draw Like an Illustrator’ is heading to Queenstown this October. Young writers and artists will have the opportunity to work alongside an award-winning author and an award-winning illustrator to develop their skills. The programme will be run at the Remarkables Primary School over the first week of the school holidays and consists of courses for junior, intermediate and advanced writers, aged from 8 to 14. The workshops will be run by author Maria Gill, and author/illustrator Fifi Colston. Fifi will run the ‘Draw Like an Illustrator’ workshop. She knows what it takes to create book illustrations – she has more than 30 titles to her name and was and a long-standing presenter of arts and crafts on TVNZ’s ‘What Now’ and later, ‘The Good Morning Show’.
The ‘Write Like an Author’ workshop will be similar, but with a focus on the art of the written word. The aspiring young authors will look at character development, storyboards and creating a story. It’ll be run by NZ Children’s Book of the Year winner, Maria Gill. She’s written more than 60 books for children and in the workshop, she’ll demonstrate how to create, develop and write stories. There’s both one-day and three-day workshops, based at Remarkables Primary School. The intermediate writing and illustration camps run from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 3rd October and are suitable for students aged from 10 to 14. An introductory day for younger students aged 8 – 10 years will be held on Monday 30th September. Older students can attend the advanced workshops on Friday 4th October. “In the course, we look at what makes a good illustration, we get inspired by famous artists, and then we get messy! And at the end of it, we have work we are hugely proud of,” she said. “We’ll work with new techniques and work in different mediums like pencil, brushes, bamboo skewers, acrylic, watercolours and Indian ink (the kids love Indian ink!). The kids can bring their devices if they’d like… but it’s more about being hands-on and getting a bit messy. “It’s a totally guided process, but the results will not be all the same. I’ll be working with kids to create their own storylines, everything from cartoons to spooky stories, fun stories or very realistic illustrations.”

Liberty Arrested? A new wall mural in downtown Las Vegas is attracting world-wide attention. The mural depicts the Statue of Liberty handcuffed and pressed against the hood of a police car. It appeared after a recent change in US administration policy on immigrants applying for permanent residency; immigration services will now be able to reject applicants who have been on public benefits. The 50 by 20 feet mural is called ‘Chain Migration’ and was created by a British immigrant who goes by the name of ‘Recycled Propaganda’. He told a local TV station that the mural was designed to “try and draw analogies with America’s past and how it was founded and how it was largely built by immigrants, to really make an analogy out of that so that people can apply that to contemporary society and contemporary issues a little bit more.”

Locally based Chomp, IBIS, and Planit BNB are slated for the stage. Australia-based Adventium, which has local operations in Queenstown, will debut the relaunch of a product at the event. The Expo concludes with a social hour of drinks and nibbles and recognition of future plans to build a tourism tech leadership role. The event is the cornerstone of an effort by Startup Queenstown Lakes to “own” tourism tech sector in New Zealand said Burnes. It’s an industry not yet recognized by MBIE and Callaghan Innovation, but Burnes believes it is an emerging sector that complements New Zealand’s tourism services industry. The trust is investing heavily in 2019 and beyond to raise the profile and establish programmes in the District with national impact.

Friday’s are our Produce Day. Supermarkets donate produce for us to pass onto clients in need. Queenstown has the highest rental rates in New Zealand and tends to have low wage rates. Many of our clients don’t have surplus funds above the necessities to cover costs like doctors, dentist and car maintenance etc. By providing free produce we can provide some relief to their budget, helping them meet the costs of those needs that get put aside when there isn’t any spare cash. Also, on a Friday, we run a Frisbee Golf group. Participants benefit from the fresh air and exercise, meet other people in their community and make connections, with no cost. We have a lovely family friendly lawn and garden for families to enjoy. Mothers and their babies/toddlers can meet up, enjoy the garden and have a morning or afternoon tea out on the lawn while their children enjoy our playhouses and small bikes. Everyone is welcome and we enjoy meeting new people.

Does A Warm Winter Freeze The Economy? by Richard White Nestled deep within the mountains, Queenstown boasts one of the most scenic backdrops I have ever seen. With its snowcapped peaks perfectly contrasting the green tree tops and ice-blue water of Lake Wakatipu. You can see why tourists flock here in droves. However, for a town so dependent on seasons to attract visitors, what happens when the snow fails to fall? In response to this year’s somewhat non-existent winter, I have decided to try and find out. On my second visit to this wonderful town, I could already see the difference between summer and winter. With the summer comes, well, obviously sun. What else? And with it tourists, lots of tourists. This though is a good

thing, for businesses at least. As the streets become rampant with holiday makers looking for the next activity on which to spend their money. This bodes extremely well for the town’s many lake activities. The winter however, is more reliant on weather in particular snow. Without snow, there is no skiing, without skiing there is no tourism. At least that’s what I have been told by so many locals. Had I not been told this I would have thought this a fairly normal winter. Though admittedly I don’t ski and therefore have no idea how that has been affected, I do have eyes and I can still see plenty of people every time I walk the street.
One area which seems to be unaffected is the hospitality industry, with less people up the mountain more people are utilizing the plethora of quality cafés and restaurants that Queenstown has to offer. Also the construction industry has benefitted massively. Milder weather means less days they can’t work. The afore mentioned lake activities seem to be faring pretty well too. So, if you want my honest opinion on whether this place will suffer… In short, no. Whatever the weather, whichever way tourists want to spend their time here, I am sure that this beautiful piece of postcard-worthy serenity will have enough alluring features to survive even the warmest of winters.

Athlete Profile - Piera Hudson

Though born in Hawke’s Bay, ski racer Piera Hudson has been spending winters in Wanaka since she was young. With fifteen years of competitions under her belt, she’s arriving at the upcoming NZ Winter Games as the country’s top-ranked female Slalom Alpine racer. Hudson says she was drawn to racing because, “As a kid, being told I could go as fast as I wanted to in a course and not get told off by ski patrol was music to my ears.” As she grew up, she got hooked on the rush of international competition, the tougher odds. “Being a small fish in a very big pond, that fight to the top, it became my drug and keeps me coming back every time.” She says it’s tough to narrow down her favourite ski memory to just one, as racing careers are built on little wins and victories that mean the world at the time. But there’s one competition she’ll never forget. “In 2007, we were up at Mt. Ruapehu for Junior Nationals. I woke up late on race day and thought I’d slept through my alarm and completely missed the race.” Her father let her run around the house in an absolute panic for five
minutes before informing her: “Good old Ruapehu had erupted and we all had to leave immediately. Safe to say Nationals were cancelled that year.” Hudson is stoked for the upcoming Winter Games, and after that she’s heading back overseas to compete on the World Cup Circuit. “It’s such a crazy sport,” she says. “Definitely give it a go. It’ll take you to places and give you experiences that will teach you so many life lessons. It’s an amazing feeling competing for your country in such a unique sport for Kiwis.”
