“How’s the recovery going?” “How’s the recovery going?” is a simple enough question, but it’s a tough one to answer. Without overseas alternatives, adventurous kiwis are visiting us here in their droves on holidays and weekends. We’ve seen some fantastic marketing campaigns showcasing unlimited attractions – all set against a backdrop of the country’s most stunning scenery. And they’re working. Our challenge has shifted from no visitors to no staff to look after them. It’s been rare in the last month or so, to have a conversation with those in business who are not experiencing recruitment or retention stress. Business and community leaders are all desperate for Kiwis willing to work or for changes to immigration policy that will allow our global grafters or manuhiri kaimahi (we have got to find a better term for migrant workforce!) to take the many available jobs we have going. Now in my second term as Mayor, I’ve learned that the best way to get results from central government is to take them the answers. I’m extremely confident that the spirit of innovation that has long flowed through the arteries of this place is capable of finding a solution. There’s a couple of things that can help. Firstly, we need to ensure employers are registering their vacancies with MSD (Ministry for Social Development). This gives government accurate data reflecting the employment picture in the Queenstown Lakes, and it can match those looking for work with your positions. If you’re not using their free service already, I heartily recommend you do and you can sign up here https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/online-services/vacancy/index.html .
Blaine, Alicia, Abby & Ralph making the most of the Real Journeys Local’ Specials at Walter Peak FOLLOW US
Secondly, we need to get creative and try new recruitment practices to attract Kiwis to the best part of the world for work. We hear it often that Kiwis don’t want the jobs we’re offering but it shouldn’t be such a tough sell to ask them to join our fabulous way of life. We’ve got a lot to offer, let’s package it correctly, reward them appropriately and make it about lifestyle as a whole. Our local Chambers of Commerce and the Economic Development team at Council are doing some excellent work in this arena. Get in touch if you need advice. On the back of the successful ‘Jobbortunities’ employment expo a few weeks ago, QLDC is hosting the Central Lakes Jobs Fair on Thursday 26 November to provide employers with the opportunity to connect with potential new employees. If you have current vacancies and you’re wanting to register as an employer for this event, or you know someone who may be interested, please go to https://www.qldc.govt.nz/kia-kaha#jobs-fair to sign up. For my part, I will continue advocating for and convincing the appropriate new ministers that our international workforce is an essential and valued part of our communities and our economy. We’re all in this together. Kia kaha, kia toa, kia manawanui.

NZC chief executive David White said his organisation was delighted to schedule the two West Indies warm-up games in Queenstown, particularly given the difficult times the resort town has experienced. “The John Davies Oval is one of the most beautiful grounds in the world and I’m certain, after managed isolation, the West Indies will enjoy the change of scenery and atmosphere. “These are important games for the tourists, as is the week of training ahead of them, and should provide a good spectacle for cricket fans in the region.” The John Davies Oval, at the Queenstown Events Centre, is widely recognised as one of world cricket’s most spectacular grounds. It has drawn wide praise, including from cricketers such as former England Captain Sir Alastair Cook. District mayor Jim Boult said the matches would prove a welcome, and fun, boost to the town and its economy. “One of the ways Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is supporting the local economy is by bringing events to town,” Boult said. “We’ve had our fair share of disappointments recently, such as missing out on both the New Zealand Golf Open and hosting teams for the Rugby Championship, so hosting one of world cricket’s top teams feels especially rewarding.” Boult said the teams would also work with local clubs and cricketers during their time in Queenstown. “Cricket has been blossoming here in Queenstown, with local clubs seeing record turnout across all age groups. “It’s the perfect time to be building a relationship with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), and the ties being made during this series will last long into the future.” “This is just the beginning of high level cricket returning to the district.” On Tuesday, all West Indies players and support staff returned negative day three COVID-19 tests while quarantining in Christchurch’s managed isolation facility. As per government guidelines, further tests will be required on days six and 12 of their managed isolation stay. QLDC Sports and Recreation Manager Simon Battrick said the visit showed a welcome commitment from New Zealand Cricket, particularly in the wake of Queenstown’s recent golf and rugby misses. “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase international cricket in Queenstown,” Mr. Battrick said. “It will provide not just a strong economic return, but also an opportunity for the community to see international cricket players up close.” West Indies Queenstown matches: West Indies vs. New Zealand A, 3-Day Match, Friday 20 – Sunday 22 November 2020, 11am

Motatapu Off Road goes ahead in new hands and new date
by Paul Taylor
Queenstown’s iconic Motatapu off-road sporting event is going ahead in 2021 under new ownership. Local event management specialists Gemma Peskett and Craig Gallagher have bought the event from IRONMAN Oceania who have owned and operated it for three years. Peskett, who has been involved with Kathmandu Coast to Coast and Winter Games NZ for multiple years, confirmed it would return to a one-day multi discipline event on Saturday, 6 March, 2021. “The change in date now means we don’t clash with the Wanaka A&P Show weekend, which we believe is an excellent way of spreading visitors across our region and allowing both events to flourish.” Registrations opened last Thursday, when Peskett hopes to see a great number of regulars return for its 17th edition. “We have both worked on this iconic event and as a past Race Director I feel I can bring a real passion and knowledge to Motatapu. “We want to be able to support our local community and bring in participants from all over New Zealand, maybe Australia too, border depending, to enjoy this epic slice of paradise. We are lucky to work with generous land owners who open up their Station for just one day allowing athletes to compete in this bucket-list event.” Gallagher who has his own events company, Summit Events, also confirmed a 2021 price drop for competitors. “We wanted to make it easier for all athletes, especially in current COVID times to enter and enjoy the event, whether it be the Mountain Bike Race, Off-Road Marathon, Ultra Run or Miners Trail option,” he says.
Motatapu will continue its work with the Queenstown Trails Trust, the Official Charity Partner, with $7 of every entry going towards the ongoing maintenance and development of trails within the Wakatipu Basin.

CLEANER PUBLIC PLACE RECYCLING
Gina Dempster Communications Manager, Wastebusters
Social enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively, as part of the Queenstown Lakes District waste services initiative
I’m about to blow the lid off one of recycling’s dirty little secrets. Mixed recycling bins in public places are dirty, very dirty. So dirty in fact, that an audit released this week found that 89% of the mixed recycling bins from our district’s 4-way public place bins failed the quality standard to be accepted into the recycling sorting facility in Frankton. 100% of the mixed recycling bins from the 2-way public place bins (the bins with one recycling bin and one rubbish bin) failed the standard. To be super clear, this audit was only for the public place bins, not the kerbside recycling bins which we all have at home. The recycling which goes into public place mixed recycling bins is quite different to recycling in kerbside bins, because: • Public place recycling bins are located near cafes and take-away outlets, so they tend to be full of dirty take-away food and drink packaging • In town, people have no way to clean off food and sticky liquids before recycling • The bins are commonly used by visitors, who are often confused about what should go in them As a habitual public place recycling bin snooper (much to the dismay of my teenage children), I was stoked to be one of the sorters for the audit. It was gooey, greasy, sticky and fascinating! The bins were full of plastic cups covered in smoothie remains and smeared with chocolate, brown paper take-away bags stuffed full of old chips, sauce and dirty napkins and filthy cardboard and plastic take-away containers.
So now we have the data, what to do? The easiest option would be to keep quiet and do nothing, or to blame the users of the bins. Instead, QLDC have chosen a bold plan to address the flaws in the system, which I believe is a first for New Zealand. Their plan is to remove all the mixed recycling bins from public places in our district, and to roll out new single stream public place recycling bins for aluminium cans. Glass recycling will stay as is in the 4-way public bins. Over the next month, you’ll see these changes happening. The yellow bins in the 4-way public place bins will be restickered as aluminium cans only. The mixed recycling bins in the 2-way public place bins (the bins with one recycling bin and one rubbish bin) will be restickered as rubbish bins. More public place 4-way bins are on their way for summer, especially for some of our smaller communities which don’t have any yet. Wastebusters has advocated for transparent, high quality recycling for two decades now, so we really support these moves by QLDC. The audit showed that aluminium cans made up the highest number of clean, recyclable materials in the public place recycling bins, more than twice as many as clean glass bottles. Using recycled aluminium to make new cans requires just 5% of the energy and produces just 5% of the CO2 emissions of using raw materials. Collecting aluminium cans in a single stream bin will be a huge step forward for public place recycling in our district, as they are way too valuable to send to landfill.
Some of these materials are technically recyclable, but they were nearly all in a dirty and contaminated state, meaning no reprocessor would take them as a raw material. The audit found in total 38-42% by weight of materials in the public place mixed recycling bins were non-recyclable, either because they were the wrong material or were in a non-recyclable state. But here’s the good news! The audit also found that the glass from the separate glass recycling bin in the 4-way public place bin stations was sweet. Most of those public place 4-way bins are located down near the lake, you’ve probably noticed them because they’re big and colourful (yellow, blue and red). The single stream, blue glass recycling bins had really low rates of contamination (less than 1% by weight), which means the glass can be collected, processed and sent off to O-I in Auckland for recycling back into new glass bottles.
For the same reasons, Wastebusters also supports QLDC’s shift in kerbside recycling of plastics from 1 Dec, to accept only high value plastics which can be recycled onshore: 1
clear bottles only
2
bottles and containers
5
bottles and containers
Change isn’t easy, but it’s way past time for recycling systems around the globe to be more transparent and effective. Our council is showing leadership to improve our district’s recycling systems and make recycling more transparent. Supporting these moves will encourage them to make more bold choices in the future.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
Happy 99th birthday to Clarice May - honestly, this woman is a national treasure. She’s helped so many people in her long life, and earned a well deserved QSM. She’s a bowel cancer survivor and has taught hundreds of people how to deal with it, not to mention visiting and cheering up all the people in the local retirement homes (many of whom were much younger than she is!) She held a pool party for her 90th and I’m really looking forward to hearing what she’s planning for her 100th. A VERY cool local bird. My husband is trying to stay young like Clarice by dieting and doing his exercises - I’m very proud of him sticking to the regime and must admit, I doubted his stickability. He has been in Auckland this week and staying with our son and his girlfriend in their very tiny flat. He’s forgotten that people in Auckland have neighbours, and as he did his morning routine out in their minute garden, grunting and groaning away, a concerned one called over the fence, “Are you all right? Do you need help?”. No, he wasn’t having a heart attack, but the noise does sound rather like it. Our daughter in London was told by her employers that she could go and work remotely in Spain until January, if she wanted - noone is meant to go to work in the UK unless they absolutely can’t do their work from home. She said goodbye to all her friends and flew away. The next day, one of the London friends who’d been partying with her rang to say she better get a COVID test as she’d tested positive. Sure enough - 15 minutes and 55 Euro later, we have a daughter with the virus. The photo she sent us, titled “On My Deathbed” has her lying on a sunbed by a pool - still no symptoms and getting plenty of Vitamin D with all that Spanish sun. Garlic is good for fighting viruses too, apparently, but it’s very hard to buy nice garlic at the moment. The supermarkets have loads of that horrible bright white Chinese garlic, and plenty of American garlic - why won’t the supermarkets treat the NZ producers properly and buy local garlic? I do know the answer to that, and it’s because there aren’t many big local growers, and the supermarkets can’t be bothered dealing with small ones. They make more profit buying in huge quantities from America and China. The more we let them do that, the less NZ produce there will be. Gosh, that makes me sound snippety! And what about the snippety Greg Dixon’s comment about Arrowtown in the Listener? “Twee and geared only for the vulgar business of parting middle-class tourists from their money”. I’m still seething! Middle class? Our visitors are from every class some with money and some without. And the reason they visit is because it is a gorgeous town in a stunning part of the world’s most beautiful country. Poor him. He lives in a place called Carterton which I have never knowingly visited. I looked it up online a) to see where it is, and b) to see how it looks. I imagine visitors rarely darken their doors. Bad luck, Mr Dixon. By the way, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear farming or other work gear into Arrowtown - we do work, you know, even though we live in such a lovely place. And even though, unlike Carterton we can’t buy a chainsaw in our main street, we can enjoy a worldfamous opera singer performing here this week, and lovely young Rosie from the Astor Bristed Gallery showing an exciting looking art exhibition. I hardly ever buy a chainsaw, but I’m always keen on a dollop of culture. Paula Bennett was at Millbrook this week in her new role with Bayleys Real Estate. She is 50 kg lighter these days and looking fantastic. Can’t help thinking she chose a very good time to leave politics! Jon Mitchell wants to “Paint the Region Red” and is holding a fundraising art and wine auction at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall on November 20th.You can get tickets at eventbrite.co.nz and there’s an online catalogue as well. He did an exceptional job of his campaign as the Labour candidate for the election, and turned some of this deep blue district’s deepest blue voters a shiny scarlet this time round.

An hour with Tom Scott Leah McFall interviewed Tom Scott at the opening the Queenstown Writers Festival on Friday. I can tell you two things about spending an hour with Tom Scott. One, it won’t be long enough. And two, it will live in your memory for a long time. Tom Scott is our foremost public wit. He’s a master of anecdote and a conversationalist par excellence: everybody’s fantasy dinner guest. If you’ve previously enjoyed him as a speaker, you’ll know he’ll have you laughing one minute and welling up the next. He’s also unguarded and game for anything. No questions, his publicist told me, are off limits.
Sometimes I wonder if we’d remember these men the way we now do, without Scott’s journalism and cartooning. I wonder, in the case of Kirk at least, if we’d remember them at all. So yes, Scott’s talents are multiple, his awards innumerable and his achievements incomparable. Cartoonist, columnist, satirist, playwright, screenwriter, film-maker – take your pick from his work on page, stage, or screen. This is a man whose nib never goes blunt, and whose ink never runs dry. Let’s face it: he could quite easily have interviewed himself. Tom Scott has released an acclaimed new book, and there are fresh matters to discuss. Searching for Charlie: In Pursuit of the Real Charles Upham VC & Bar pays tribute to a man everyone has heard of, but few people truly knew.
He’s got a bloody knack, has Scott, of being in the right place, at the perfect time, to observe key cultural moments in our history. He seems to have been everywhere these past 50 years, knowing everyone. From about 1970, when he was a flash of colour among the brown suits and kipper ties of political Wellington, he was usually in the room where something important happened. If we couldn’t be there, we were lucky Scott was. In dozens of columns and cartoons, and later in his films and documentaries, he turned news into art, and that art became news. He wrote it down as it was happening and boy, did we love reading it. There were those theatrical encounters with the fearsome Rob Muldoon, whose antipathy towards Scott in the press gallery and Parliament’s corridors became the stuff of legend. Then Scott was there to witness Lange’s emergence and rise to premiership. He saw at first hand the turning point in the House, when Lange landed a major hit on Muldoon with a single flash of wit. Remembers Scott: “’Hah! Lange!’ snorted Muldoon. ‘Your belly is bigger than mine!’ ‘That may well be so,’ bellowed Lange, ‘but mine is higher off the ground!’” It was a bellwether change, Scott told us. “The spell had been broken.” There were moments of deep gravitas, too. Scott observed the pitiless decline of Lange’s health, as he previously did of Norman Kirk. Indeed, the pages of Scott’s memoir which describe Kirk’s body lying in state at Parliament, are some of the most moving in that book.
It’s an unconventional biography – military history with humour and heart. It takes us across New Zealand, to Europe and the Middle East. It’s the reason Scott quit a long and happy stint cartooning for the Dominion Post. It was a passion project that became an emotional quest. The book even has elements of pilgrimage, as Tom retraces not only Upham’s boot-prints in the Cretan dirt and desert sand, but those of the NZ Division – honouring them with remembrance. Like our hour with Tom, you’ll find the book funny, moving, surprising and in some ways, comforting. It’s a portrait of a baffling man – our most honoured New Zealander, revered even by his enemies, whose medals and the fame that came with them brought him no pleasure at all. It’s a love letter to a bygone generation and in many ways, a plea to all New Zealanders to remember the past. Nobody but Scott could have written a book like this. He’s bloody gone and done it again.
Later, he kept vigil for a close-to-death Ed Hillary in the Himalayan foothills – helping usher him to safety by helicopter to Kathmandu. At these moments, Scott was our proxy – feeling deep emotion on behalf of the rest of us but keeping enough critical distance to write it all down.
About Leah McFall Wellington’s Leah McFall released Karori Confidential, a collection of her award-winning Sunday magazine columns, in 2018. She has written humour, features and book reviews for titles including Your Weekend, Canvas and Stuff. Previously at RNZ, TVNZ and the NZSO, she began her career in Queenstown at Q92FM.
Clean out for Christmas November is a good time to clean out your fridge, freezer and pantry in preparation for Christmas. Not only will you be making space to store a turkey or ham, and lots of leftovers, you can also save yourself some money in the process. Go through your kitchen and make a list of things that have been hanging around a bit too long. Make the effort to eat your way through the list over the next couple of weeks. Fritters and pancakes are a great way to use up little odds and ends. Whether it is leftover roast vegetables, an old tin of corn or some peas that have been in the freezer forever, the beauty of the fritter is that they can be adapted based on what you need to use up. This month’s recipe for Okonomiyaki has taken inspiration from the Japanese culture. While the recipe calls for cabbage you could substitute it for two cups of any vegetables. Arts+Culture Rail Land - Anthonie Tonnon With a mission to reverse the lame name of public transport, Anthonie Tonnon launched Rail lands Tour in 2018. “I hated the idea of just having a convo” says Tonnon. “I wanted a movement of people. A practical experience… The entire audience meets me on the bus. It becomes like a holiday. Take a journey to the hinterlands”. The elements of Rail land are meticulously thought out. The public routes carefully considered. The crowd gets dropped near an old community hall. The timing the performance coincides with the timetable. Tonnon’s refined his equipment so he can travel lightly on the rail or road. It’s immersive, like a theatre show. “Linking together the old and new.” Adds Tonnon. After the tour ended, he realised Rail land needed to be a cathartic yearly summer tour to be shown in the twilight evening. “It’s not soo vintage. I’m not turning up with a feather in my hat… I want to show people that what we have is pretty amazing”.
“When I was 17, I got into music. I lived and breathed it.” For renown New Zealand musician, Anthonie Tonnon, the same notion now applies to public transport. The wheels on the bus make the cogs in his head go round and round. “The deeper you go the more you find out” he says, spellbound. In 2017, he was scouting sights of old dilapidated train stations in Dunedin for his music video clip old images. The visuals gave him the premonition to dive deeper into its past. “It was like falling down a psychedelic whirlpool”. He was astonished to discover there was a subway underpass close to his childhood residence. He grappled with the idea that Dunedin once had organised transport. “It blew my mind”. He found that New Zealand actually had an extensive and efficient bus and rail system spanning all nooks of the county. Tonnon memorized out loud the trainline that went from Dunedin to Milton, Balclutha, Clinton, Waitahi, Gore, to Lumsden, then ended in Kingston. “The Earnslaw was owned by the rail system” he said enthusiastically. Passengers would catch the Earny ferry service from Kingston into Queenstown.
This year Tonnon is particularly enthusiastic about performing in the Wakatipu. “It’s incredible, to me, what Queenstown did” referring to the $2 Orbus initiative. “It’s the 3rd best bus system in New Zealand... Queenstown has 30 rides per capita. Dunedin has 10 rides per capita” to make a point. “Other towns are in ore of what (Queenstown) has achieved” The bus route Tonnon’s chosen for this special Wakatipu performance, starts at the Frankton bus hub, with the audience jumping off near the Arrowtown hall. “What can we do now! That’s the message of the show”.
Tonnon compares the standard to a ‘continental European country’. “A couple of generations ago it used to be like this”. Tonnon is sombre about our once utilised rail system now being a lost piece of civilisation. “The last 30 years, New Zealand gave public transport the least of its resources... it stopped spending money on it”. Political undertones became prevalent as Tonnon explains the reforms of the 80s and 90s, along with the axing that took place all over the country. “Dunedin was ruined”. Public transport was simply losing to the popularity of cars. “New Zealand is no longer connected by public transport... People think of them as loser cruisers... There’s a distain for trains’’ he said without pausing for the laugh.

New ‘gated community’ planned for Queenstown
by Paul Taylor
What’s On
Developers behind Queenstown’s largest retirement village and new hospital have submitted plans for a gated community nearby. Sanderson Group, owned by Fraser and Donna Sanderson, want to create a 12-lot subdivision off Howards Drive, the road into Lake Hayes Estate. The small subdivision would be over the road from Queenstown Country Club, behind a large row of trees and adjacent to the old Walker family property on Ladies Mile, which Queenstown’s council bought for $13.8 million early last year. Sanderson Group bought the 8500 sqm of land back in November 2019. It has now applied to Queenstown Lakes District Council for resource consent. “It is intended that the development be offered with land and build package options to ensure that this gated community retains its appeal as a desirable community to live in,” the project summary reads.

Reshaping privacy – 2020 and beyond
Covid-19 has brought privacy issues to the fore around the world, as governments grapple with balancing the need for adequate contact tracing systems and protecting citizens’ privacy. But in New Zealand, this changing privacy landscape is even more front of mind due to key changes in the new Privacy Act 2020, which will take effect two weeks after Catalyst Trust’s discussion with Privacy Commissioner John Edwards on Monday, November 16. This new Act introduces several new privacy protections and obligations. Mr Edwards will discuss what these changes mean for individuals, businesses and organisations, plus recent privacy challenges in the context of Covid-19, both in New Zealand and overseas. He will be open to questions, including on Covid-related issues his office has been engaged in this year, such as contact tracing, the Covid card debate and international developments. Mr Edwards has been New Zealand’s Privacy Commissioner since February 2014 and previously was a lawyer for over 20 years. He was chair of the Executive Committee of the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners from 2014 to 2017. Registration is required on Catalyst Trust’s Eventbrite page. When: Monday, 16th November - 6:00pm - 7:30pm Where: The Rees Hotel Queenstown conference room

Carlson Gracie Queenstown, Invercargill, Wanaka, and South Canterbury teams were all in attendance. LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Habebes at the Market It has become a Saturday morning tradition. To show face at the Remarkables Market, to browse the selection of local goods and yak with someone you haven’t seen in a while. A tradition that Habebes has been following for nearly 7 years, as they have been attending the market since its early days. “The very first year, we just had a stall” said Amanda, owner/operator of Habebes. She recalls the set up as being “minimal”. The year after their appearance, she invested in the mobile food trailer. Amanda saw the market potential and dug the vibe. “It’s a different environment” says Amanda “You’re out in the fresh air... local people fronting up and selling their stuff... it’s a nice vibe”.
Amanda’s empowered by the community element this market fosters. “Locals have always been our target market, it just made sense to me”.
“I’d like to rustle up some night food markets for Beach Street” mentions Amanda. Could this be the next market craze? Emphatically yes!
Even her mother gets behind the counter and helps with market shifts, rain, hail or shine. She likes the principle that people are dealing with producers directly “You’re not just buying stuff from the supermarket”. On weekends, Habebes in town is closed with the exception of being open at the Saturday morning Remarkables Market. It is an opportunity to get out of their premises and get in contact with more locals. Amanda has seen the Remarkables Market swell in popularity and commends the operators on their improvements “It’s grown hugely... they’ve done heaps with the space”. The Remarkables Market conjures some emotive attachments for Amanda, she wants to see more of them.

Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art
Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living
(613.192 NES: FTN)
(306.8 DOY – CROM, QT, ROX, WKA, FTN)
James Nestor
No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. There is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance, rejuvenate internal organs, halt snoring, allergies, asthma and autoimmune disease, and even straighten scoliotic spines. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.
Just Like You From the million-copy bestselling author comes a brutally funny novel about finding love when you least expect it. The person you are with is just like you: same background, same age, same interests. The perfect match. And it is a disaster. Then, when and where you least expect it, you meet someone new. You seem to have nothing in common and yet, somehow, it feels totally right. Nick Hornby’s brilliantly observed, tender but also brutally funny new novel gets to the heart of what it means to fall surprisingly and headlong in love with the best possible person someone who is not just like you at all.
Dav Pilkey
(CF PIL – ALEX, KING, MILL)
The Supa Buddies bamboozled the baddies, but all’s not right in the world. Dog Man has a new problem to pound, and he’s going to need his entire pack to help him. Will he go barking up the wrong tree? Dav Pilkey’s wildly popular Dog Man series appeals to readers of all ages and explores universally positive themes, including empathy, kindness, persistence, and the importance of doing good.
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? Glennon decides to stop abandoning herself and to instead abandon the world’s expectations of her. She stopped pleasing and started living. Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts. Untamed shows us how to be brave.

Deputy Stuart Kofer is a protected man. Though he’s turned his drunken rages on his girlfriend, Josie, and her children many times before, the police code of silence has always shielded him. But one night he goes too far, leaving Josie for dead on the floor before he passes out. Her son, sixteen-year-old Drew, knows he has only this one chance to save them. He picks up the gun and takes the law into his own hands. In Clanton, Mississippi there is no one more hated than a copy killer but a cop killer’s defence lawyer comes close. Jake Brigance doesn’t want this impossible case but he’s the only one with enough experience to defend the bot. As the trial begins, it seems the gas chamber is inevitable for Drew. But, as the town of Clanton discovers once again, when Jake Brigance takes on an impossible case, anything is possible.
Outlander Season 5
(DVDTV – ALEX, FTN, QTN, ROX )
Season Five of Outlander finds the Frasers fighting for their family and the home they have forged on Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie must find a way to defend all that he has created in America, and to protect those who look to him for leadership and protection – while hiding his personal relationship with Murtagh Fitzgibbons, the man whom Governor William Tryon has ordered him to hunt down and kill. With her family together at last, Claire Fraser must use her modern medical knowledge and foresight to prevent them from being ripped apart once again. However, while focusing on protecting others, she risks losing sight of what it means to protect herself. Meanwhile, Brianna Fraser and Roger MacKenzie have been reunited, but the specter of Stephen Bonnet still haunts them. Roger strives to find his place – as well as Jamie’s respect – in this new and dangerous time. The Frasers must come together, navigating the many perils that they foresee – and those they can’t.
s a m t s i r Ch Functions
For groups, venues are always a very good option. Themed nights and organised parties often include entertainment on the night. Those could be bands or a DJ. Food and drink would often be included as a package. The benefit of booking a venue that can supply the above is saving time and potential stress. Depending on what Christmas party package you book and in what venue it can be a clear statement to your employees that you value their work and time.

Five reasons you need a Christmas Function this year Consider the work Christmas party is an investment in your company’s future success, with long-term value that lasts beyond the night. 5 ways to think about your Christmas Party as a strategic decision. 1. Boost Employee Retention Making time and effort to celebrate the hardest year on record for everyone makes strategic sense! Having a great Christmas function recognises we have all been through this year together and the teams hard work and sacrifice is appreciated and it goes a long way to making people feel genuinely appreciated. Given how hard it is to find new staff an investment in the party, just might be the deal-breaker for individuals who’ve been toying with the idea of changing jobs.

2. Inspire High Performance Combining the work Christmas party with an awards night has been a strong trend in recent years and is often both fun with some crazy awards and inspiring for those you recognise. 3. Strengthen the Team as you head into the crazy summer period.

As the saying goes, ‘The team that plays together stays together.‘ While everyone generally knows everyone else the Christmas party allows people to interact with each other on new levels. In a social context, everyone is more likely to have non-work conversations and appreciate one another better. 4. Deliver key messages and plans for the year ahead The Christmas party is a great time to plant seeds of enthusiasm for the summer season ahead, and announce new initiatives or new programs. It gives people an idea on what to expect over the summer, not too much detail, just enough to tempt the tastebuds – because it is a party, after all! 5. Fun! Ohh yea and the Christmas party, in whatever form or shape it takes, is a reward for a year of hard work. It carries enormous value that stretches beyond the event itself, and the fun factor is a big contributor to this. At the end of the day, who doesn’t want to let their hair down and have a great time?

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Wayne’s marathon mission
by Paul Taylor
Wayne Foley says the trick of running a marathon is to look after yourself along the way.
Foley, who was one of the founders of the WHS Foundation back in 2013, will run with 47 teachers and youngsters from WHS, who’ll cover the various distances, from the full to the half marathon and 10km.
But it’s the next generation of Queenstowner’s who’ll benefit from the 60-year-old pushing through the full 42km of the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Queenstown Marathon on November 21.
“We thrilled so many can run for the foundation. It will be an amazing day.
The Queenstown property developer was elected chairman of the Wakatipu High School Foundation in April, the same month he turned 60.
“I’ve been building up to it for about six months now. I’m averaging about 50-60km a week, but it’s nearly time to button it back a bit and wait for the day.”
Now, in a year when Covid-19 has impacted the foundation’s fundraising activities, he hopes to raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the school.
He’s been training on the trails around Arrowtown and seeing the physio regularly, for injury prevention rather than cure. This will be his fourth marathon. He’s run the Queenstown Marathon, the Motatapu mountain marathon and the New York marathon.
“It just made sense to me to do this, as everyone knows it’s been a tough year for this community,” he says.
“I did the first one, the Queenstown Marathon in 4hrs 45mins, so my goal would be to at least check that, because I’m a few years older now.”
“It’s been a challenge for the school too, but they’ve come through amazingly well and I think that will be validated early next year when we see the first of the academic results for 2020.
He says he’ll give his all, but pace himself to reach the finish still running strongly.
“But the foundation has not been able to fundraise as usual, and we want to meet our commitment to the school.” The foundation supports many initiatives, including programmes for teachers, teacher aides, the Awhi Fund to financially support families, sports programmes, wellbeing initiatives and extracurricular activities. The overall goal is for the school to produce well rounded individuals, who can succeed in life, university and the workplace, and maintain the school’s ranking academically as New Zealand’s #2 co-ed state school.
“One of the things you learn about running marathons is you have to focus on looking after yourself. That’s the trick.” The foundation aims to establish a $10 million endowment fund in the long term, but short term aims to raise at least $200k this year to support the school. “The reality is the school should probably be getting supported at least two or three times that. “We’ll meet the $200k but ideally we’d like to double that.” Support Wayne Foley and the Wakatipu High School Foundation at www.whsf.nz/wayne-s-run
