The ugly duckling has turned into the golden goose Have you heard of Arrowtown? It is the often overlooked little town in the northwest corner of the Wakatipu. It’s big sister Queenstown is always screaming for attention claiming to be the jewel in the crown, gobbling up every last cent of any budget going for vanity projects to make itself look more beautiful, if that was even possible. It is no wonder Arrowtown was seen as the ugly duckling for so many years having to sharing the Wakatipu with such a flash big sister. But thanks to the foresight of early developers long since passed, Arrowtown is blessed with a parks and reserves network like no other town in New Zealand. And because it was forgotten and undervalued for so long, Arrowtown’s old buildings stayed just the way they were. Now it boasts more listed heritage features that any other town in New Zealand. A few years ago, Arrowtown was granted landmark status as a place of special significance by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. Last week it was judged the most beautiful small town in New Zealand. Credit where credit is due, QLDC’s Parks Department are a caring bunch who make the most of the few pennies found under the cushions of the council sofa. But most of the credit for this latest award goes to the people who live there and who put their hands up to say, “I care, I really care”. Because of these people Arrowtown has been recognised again as a very special place. We already knew this of course. But that does not lessen the pride. Now the rest of New Zealand will know too. And given the other big news to hit the northwest corner of the Wakatipu last week, it is a welcome boost to our domestic tourism hopes this summer. Pass that crown over Queenstown, or at least the jewel. The ugly duckling has turned into the golden goose.

That other news is not so good, the cancellation of The New Zealand Golf Open 2021. This event has been a huge success for golf tourism in our district particularly the host town, Arrowtown. Golf tourism is one of the last remaining highlights in a devastated tourism industry. Golf tourism was never mass tourism focused. The target market are high value spenders. More relevant than ever in the brave new world of value tourist over numbers of tourists. We can only hope the event does not disappear forever. As for Arrowtown, the golf courses are still there, and it will always be beautiful if we continue to recognise what makes it the Wakatipu’s golden goose. It is a simple formula. Handle with care and keep looking after her heritage assets, parks and reserves. Scott Stevens scott@qmg.co.nz

Arrowtown took the most beautiful small town in New Zealand honour at this year’s Beautiful Awards at a virtual awards ceremony last week. Arrowtown ward councillor Health Copland says the judges toured the town in early October and were impressed with town’s environmental initiatives, particularly the work of the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust, and its general cleanliness. “Everyone is pretty stoked,” Copland says.

Copland says the push for the award was a team effort, involving the AVA and also the Arrowtown Business Association. Together they produced a video showing the beauty of Arrowtown.

The judges also praised everyone in the town for being tidy Kiwis, and for the council-led waste management system. “They kept commenting the whole time we were on the tour that we don’t have a litter problem, and they recognised that doesn’t just come by accident, it’s education and hard work.”

Copland says any domestic tourism draw from the award won’t offset the impact of yesterday’s cancellation of the NZ Open, which was due to take place at Arrowtown courses Millbrook and The Hills in February. “But it’s some good news in amongst the bad, that’s for sure.” Keep New Zealand Beautiful named Hastings as the supreme on the night, taking out both Most Beautiful Large Town and the Supreme Towns & Cities Award. Hamilton was awarded Most Beautiful Large City and Whanganui Most Beautiful Small City. The finalists were judged by Keep New Zealand Beautiful CEO Heather Saunderson and award-winning journalist and wellness expert Rachel Grunwell. Saunderson says: “This year Covid-19 has shifted the global landscape, and its long-term effects remain unclear. Celebrating environmental excellence, small wins and beautiful behaviour, whether personal or professional, is now more important than ever. “Keep New Zealand Beautiful has decided to change tack and this year we are recognising all of our individual finalists for the amazing work that they have undertaken over the past twelve months. This will be the new structure for all future award ceremonies moving forward.”

No Responsible Camping Service Hubs this summer
by Paul Taylor
WHAT IS MUSIC CAST? It’s wireless streaming audio. It’s wireless multiroom audio. It’s wireless stereo. It’s wireless surround sound.
Are Kiwi campers more responsible than those who come from overseas? That questioned will be answered this summer, with Queenstown mayor Jim Boult expecting a busy camping season in the district, despite the closed borders.
Now Yamaha makes it easy to bring music to every room in your home wirelessly. Whether you start with a single speaker or the ultimate home theatre, MusicCast expands to fit your needs, providing wireless multi-room audio playback controlled by a simple app.
Boult says: “I’m looking forward to noting whether there are behavioural differences between these groups. This will be valuable for future camping strategies.” Queenstown Lakes District Council received $509k of funding from MBIE for Responsible Camping initiatives. But it won’t open any Responsible Camping Service Hubs this summer. Instead, the money will be used for enforcement and education, along with gathering data from campers. Campers will be encouraged to use the many campgrounds throughout the district and support local businesses. There will be free sites where they can recycle and dump rubbish. While domestic tourists are expected to head south in great numbers, the district suffered a sporting and economic blow last week with news that the NZ Golf Open has been cancelled for 2021.
NZ Golf Open cancelled It was due to happen at Millbrook and The Hills in February. John Hart, chairman of the organising committee, told RNZ: “We are extremely disappointed to have had to come to this decision but the effects of the pandemic, borders being closed, and the financial risk associated with a potential later cancellation due to any further Covid-19 outbreaks means we have no other alternative other than to cancel this event now.” More than 300 people usually come from offshore for the event, including professionals, amateurs, caddies, and officials of Tour partners (the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour). The bad news for Arrowtown was slightly sweetened by the town being crowned the most beautiful small town in NZ by Keep New Zealand Beautiful.

What’s On Queenstown Writers Festival
TWO is Sahara BreeZe Production’s 3rd theatrical show. SBZ launched last year with a local tour of ‘Dear Lupin’ about a father and a wayward son with my father, John, (86) and me having the amazing experience of rehearsing for 3 months and touring this play together. The play focussed on father and son relationships with the underlying message of spend more time with your Dad while you still can!!! Recently, we were able to perform an original Verbatim piece called ‘The New Real’ as part of Renew Art 2020. This piece was created from interviews with locals sharing how Covid had changed their lives and how they had coped. The message that came from that was ‘Hope’ and showed how resilient we all are. We were blown away by so many positive stories from our local community. Our upcoming play TWO is set in a local pub ‘The TWO ARMS’ over one evening. It is Jim Cartwright’s timeless comedy and features a landlord, landlady, and their colourful regulars - with all 14 characters played by me & my wife Sarah. Each character has a story to tell; sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, but always human. They include the bantering, bickering publican and his wife; the womaniser and his long-suffering girlfriend; and two elderly pensioners; one lamenting life and the other lamenting death. We also meet the ‘other woman’ trying to drum up courage to confront her married lover and his wife; an eccentric couple who come to the pub to eat crisps and watch TV; and a lady who reveals her secret lust for ‘big men’, but can her husband live up to it? The couples explore their relationships, deal with trauma in their own ways, navigate difficulties, and battle through. And we have a few giggles on the way!! Described as ‘sharp, witty and quickfire’ by the Guardian, TWO is touring halls, hotels, and bars around the Southern Lakes and Central Otago from 13-29 November and is directed by Auckland theatre director John Goudge. Tickets available on Eventfinda. https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/tour/2020/two-tour Performing in 8 local communities: Arrowtown Community Centre (13-14 Nov), Roxborough Grand Tavern (15 Nov), Bannockburn Hall (19 Nov), Alexandra - The Stadium (20 Nov), Queenstown -The Rydges (22 Nov), Glenorchy Camp (27 Nov), Cromwell Victoria Arms (28 Nov) and Lake Wanaka Centre (29 Nov). Written by Blaise & Sarah Barham
The Writers Festival is underway between the 5th and 8th November. Art News While we have been enthralled with the incredible talent in the region recently including the RenewArt exhibition, which is now at QT Contemporary til Nov 4th, and last week’s local Art Exhibition and Sale at Wanaka, spare a thought for artists in the rest of the world still struggling with the impact of Covid. Many of the mechanisms that make an exhibition agenda-setting for artists are currently disabled. The Louvre and all galleries in France, the UK, potentially Germany and much of Europe are closing again and shows are out of the question. Exhibitions need the coming together of events to capture the public’s attention. The art needs to be great, the media interviews intriguing; fabulous reviews; the private view buzzing; everyone in the arts world sharing their excitement; the first public days buzzing and noisy, the posters bold and alluring—all adding up to irrepressible word-of-mouth and social media fizz. But much of this is impossible today. A fifth of visitors can visit museum shows because of social distancing, even when they can open, there is no big private viewing, and fewer people to absorb the posters on relatively quiet transport networks. Of course, there will be enthusiastic exchanges on WhatsApp groups, and acclaim on Twitter and Instagram, but that magical moment when the perfect storm comes together relies on the real, social world and the digital realm acting in tandem. For many galleries and exhibitions momentum is their lifeblood, bringing the crowds to spend money on tickets but also in their shops and cafés. Now their funding models are unable to cope with shocks. Meanwhile we have been treated to a veritable smorgasbord of events, exhibitions and shows. How lucky are we.

OUT OF THE BUBBLE Regional Tourism
Kiwi adventure beckon Many of us dream of the great outdoors, of mountain biking, scaling rock faces or glaciers, climbing on a raft or kayak. If you haven’t been out of Queenstown for a while, you may be surprised about how much is within an easy 3-4-hour drive for a weekend or a short break. Have you been to Franz Joseph? Franz Joseph is synonymous with the glacier of the same name. The glacier is five kilometres from the town, and a 1.5 hour walk will take you to within 750m of its terminal face.
Franz Joseph
If you want to actually make contact with the glacier, take a heli-hike or a guided ice walk. Aerial sightseeing is another option. There’s a range of natural attractions in close proximity to Franz Josef Glacier Village that will keep even the most adventurous fully occupied. Lose yourself in the rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes.

Whirlwind Productions celebrates 10 years of Original Rock and Roll Theatre in the Wakatipu It all started ten years ago with “Rock and Roll Suicide” (2010) a Rock Opera about the rise and fall of Joe Rockstar who takes a train to London to seek fame and fortune, only to realise it’s not all it appears to be. The community responded with overwhelming applause, and Whirlwind was formed. Inspiration for original song composition led to the creation of “Songstars” - a forum for original music artists Followed by “London Calling” (2011); an exploration of the social and musical changes in the UK from 1964-1984; “California Dreaming” (2012) was a jump into the music of the US in1969 led by the characters of the time (Charles Manson, Gloria Steinham, etc. Whirlwind regularly brought new shows to local audiences through the years which included “Radio Kaos” last year that took a satirical approach into the heyday and demise of community radio.
The cast have been rehearsing and reliving some of the best of the best scenes from our past 10 years of productions. This is original theatre at it’s best - to a brilliant soundtrack. With music by The Zombies, Amy Winehouse, Pat Benatar, Arctic Monkeys and Stevie Nicks, to name a few. We love our shows and we love our community which is why we’ve chosen 2020 to take a good long look at ourselves and what we’ve done for the past 10 years. Whirlwind Productions - 10th Year Anniversary Celebration runs from Thurs Nov 5 to Saturday Nov 7. Where: Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. Tickets available from Eventbrite.co.nz

Water the garden The elixir of life is often overlooked when we think about growing veggies. Water water, there seems to be plenty coming out of the skies this spring yet as we all know suddenly and usually the tap gets turned off for the summer. In other parts of the country watering the garden can be an afterthought, for us living in the rain shadow of the southern alps it can blow for days with the promise of rain only for the front to spit a few drops and then head up the west or east coasts. An ideal climate would be a couple of nice rainy days a week, better still rainy nights. This lack of rain might not be so bad if it wasn’t so windy!! The wind just strips our soils of moisture so that we’re always in a moisture deficit. Ideally we are going to water our gardens from above imitating nature. Walking around with your garden hose can become time consuming. A simple oscillating sprinkler that goes back and forth is perfect and relatively inexpensive. Pop a timer on it and you don’t have to remember when to turn it on and more importantly when to turn off.
Top water tips
As our garden gets bigger so do your watering needs. Efficiency of delivery becomes more important as more and more of our homes are metered. I’ve tried lots of leaky hose systems over the years with varying success. Changing to an overhead system I experienced major improvements in my growing of veggies. By overhead I mean a series of sprinklers attached to some Waratahs banged in the ground placed in the corners to ensure good coverage. Simple and efficient at getting the job done. Simple it may be and yes very efficient at getting the water out, but I’m still watering my pathways needlessly. A more efficient delivery can be sprinklers for each bed. As crops get bigger these can be less efficient at delivery as the plants get in the way.. I haven’t found the perfect system overhead delivery system but I’m loving this one... Let me know if you have found it. In my tunnel house I have 2 systems in play. The overhead sprinklers run for most of the year. I grow a lot of tomatoes and they don’t like too much water from above as they move into fruit ripening. Overhead watering can encourage humid disease loving conditions. As the summer season goes along I switch to inline drippers on the beds. Giving the tunnel house an overhead water once a week.
5. How long do I water for? We mentioned longer is better. So think 30minutes rather than 10 minutes. Get in your garden after you’ve watered and dig a hole. How deep did your water go. 2cm or 10cm? 10 plus is preferable. Dig a few holes you might find the sprinkler system delivers more water to some areas of the garden. You could then plant accordingly with water hungrier plants in those areas. Eg pumpkins, zucchini’s, tomatoes, celery, cucumber and corn... 6. Capturing rainfall. Consider wood chipped pathways 20-30cm deep to capture and soak water into your landscape.
1. A long deep water every other day is more beneficial than daily short watering. Your plants roots grow where there’s water. Shallow watering encourages shallow roots. This leads to less resilient plants in times of stress or your water system breaking down. So watering for longer to get water and roots to go deeper. 2. Mulch (straw/leaves/wood chips...) as well as feeding your biology and plants in the soil etc Mulch stops and slows the evaporation of water from your soil. It also prevents soil compaction that rainfall and your sprinkler system causes on the soil surface. 3. The more organic matter in our soil the greater the water holding capacity it has. Generally we all have sandy and silty soils, that have very poor water holding capacity. So we need to really focus on getting our organic matter levels up. Think regular applications of compost, vermicast, leaf mould and mulch. Products like biochar increase the water holding capacity of the soil too. 4. When do we water? Watering in the morning, gives plants a chance to get through a hot or windy day with less stress.
7. Planting comfrey down stream from your veggie garden can be used to capture any soluble nutrients and excess watering that might occur with rain events. 8. Consider capturing and storing your roof water. There are simple tap into downpipe systems available. 9. On town water? Chlorine is not the gardeners friend. Putting water in barrels and totes is a way of allowing the chlorine to gas off. Agitating the water with a cheap fish tank aerator will speed up the process. 10.Ever noticed your plants are glowing after a rainfall. Rain is best capturing nitrogen on its way down giving our plants a feed. Happy gardening!

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Habebes means ‘much loved’ in Arabic The hub of contemporary middle eastern flavours in down town Queenstown is a staple for lunching locals.
For those who frequent Habebes know of the fine selection of sweet treats in the cabinet located cunningly at the till. Slices such as chocolate addiction, apricot-orgasm, caramel coffee tempt you upon purchase. There’s a choice of bite size chunks or serious slabs. They are the perfect pick-me-up when energy is lacking. Amanda, owner and operator of Habebes, personally loves the Fig balls they offer. Hailed as the health champ among the other sweeties. It’s dairy free, gluten free and has no added sugar, therefore, guilt free. Fig balls are a long-standing recipe that was brought in before its time, before raw food got trendy. They boost nutritional value such as fibre, protein, magnesium and the figs ‘’help things with the poo department’’ assures Amanda, no jokes. These balls of goodness get made once a week at Habebes. Most of the ingredients can be found in the bulk bins at most conventional supermarkets. They are super simple to make. Amanda parts with the recipe so habebe-lovers can enjoy a snack from their favourite place, outside of business hours in the great outdoors.
Fabulous Fig Balls Makes approx 12 balls
1 cup of dried figs, chopped dried apricots and chopped dried dates in heatproof bowl. Soak in hot water overnight or for 3 hours. 1/4 cup each of pumpkin seeds and natural unsalted almonds in dry pan and fry til toasted. Blitz seed and nut mix and lay it out on a plate. Blitz soaked fruit til firm and doughy. Spoon fig mixture into the hand and mould into a golf ball size. Coat fig ball in the nut and seed mix then place in an air tight container in the fridge to set. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 6 weeks.
Amanda suggests having these fig balls handy on hikes and recommends the Mount Crichton Loop Track for a great summer walk. “Just don’t sit on them” she adds. Fabulous Fig Balls are the ultimate healthy sweet treat from Habebes.

COMMUNITY NOTES Update from the Community Housing Trust In the past few months, I’ve fielded many enquiries as to whether the Trust’s waiting list has moved up or down post COVID-19. Interestingly, we saw the list remain stagnant for the lockdown period, before a sudden spike in registrations in June/July. With well over 600 eligible households now on the waiting list, demand for housing assistance continues to grow, despite the fact rents have dropped. COVID-19 had a serious impact on many of our existing households, as well as those on the waiting list. Where required, we provided rent reductions for tenants, and ensured all our assisted-ownership households were able to access mortgage holidays if needed. Whilst the full impact of this pandemic remains unknown, we will continue to respond with nimbleness and flexibility to the situation that presents itself. Many LWB readers will be aware QLCHT has a contract to purchase 50 one and two-bed Toru apartments at Remarkables Park, Frankton. I’m delighted to advise the finish line is in sight, with move-in dates scheduled for February 2021. A significant amount of time has been spent obtaining alternative funding options for this project, which will enable us to provide a truly mixed tenure model throughout our 50 units. In July the Government confirmed a $6.365m interest-free loan to fund 25 Secure Home Toru properties. This financing is part of the first phase of a wider $400m Progressive Home Ownership fund the Government’s rolling out across the country to help more Kiwis into

alternative forms of home ownership. In practice, it enables us to offer an affordable, secure tenure ownership option with an average purchase price of $220k for a 1-bed, and $320k for a 2-bed apartment. Households will then pay a below market ground rent for the “land” component of the property. In addition to the Secure Home properties, we’ll also be assigning 15 into Public Housing (via a contract with the Crown), and retaining the remainder through a mixture of affordable rentals and our rentto-buy programme (Rent Saver). As at today we have 633 households on our waiting list, made up of 986 adults and 616 children. Around 50% of these households are singles, couples or small families, so potentially well-suited to apartment living. We will continue to provide housing for larger family units in our other developments throughout the District. Julie Scott Executive Officer Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust

QT BUSINESS tech economy as a complement to tourism, rather than as a replacement. He says visitor tech is a good option, as Queenstown’s already an iconic destination. “When people talk about tech hubs, I guess the question for me is what can we specialise in, what can we be better than anyone else in?” he says. “And those solutions in visitor tech are valuable to the whole tourism industry nationally.” He sees the potential of attracting returning expats and also tech leaders to the district. That’s sure to be on the agenda of the council’s Regenerative Recovery Advisory Group, which has tech heavy-hitters Roger Sharp and Neil Jacobstein among its nine members.
NZ Hospo Tech: From left, Cameron Steel (First Table), James O’Connell (The Hospitality Company), Kate Burns (event manager), Paul Wilson (Chomp), Richard McLeod (Loaded), Mat Weir (First Table) and MC, Simon Small former Managing Director of Diligent and co-founder of AI company Arria.
Grassroots tech shows way forward written by Paul Taylor
Seven months on from the closure of New Zealand’s borders and the green shoots of a tech sector are growing in Queenstown. The resort town, which grappled with double-digit tourism growth for several years, was given a stark reminder of the need to diversify its economy when Covid-19 struck. There has, in truth, been a nascent tech industry here for about a decade - check-in software company Wherewolf launched back in 2013, while the first Startup Weekend was held in 2014. But Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO Olivia Wensley says there is now an actual ecosystem evolving, boosted by returning Kiwi expats. There’s also a push to draw support from central government. “There’s certainly been a lot of movement,” Wensley says. “It’s only been six or so months since it all went to custard, but we’ve got a viable community and it’s just going to get better.” That includes returning entrepreneurs, such as Wakatipu native Matthew Waddick, who’s seeking $2 million investment for the electric motorbike company Switch Motorcycles. “He’s lived in Shanghai for the past 15 years,
but he’s come back, seen how supportive Callaghan Innovation is, got involved with the local start up scene and decided to stay. It’s an amazing product. We’re introducing him to investors. He’ll manufacture the bikes down south, Dunedin or Invercargill, but have a presence here.” Concert wristband app software Slate, created by festival hotshots Scott Witters and Sam Hay, is another Wakatipu-based project, while Machine Elf is the work of photo guru Trey Ratcliff and Arrowtown musician Sam Wave. They create visual and audio content designed to expand consciousness, for star US startup Tripp.com. Covid’s also seen local business owners pivot to new tech enterprises, such as Nigel Hobbs’ Go Local app, a business geodirectory. And it has highlighted the value of established innovators, such as Matt Weir’s First Table, Paul Wilson’s food safety compliance app Chomp, and Cook Brothers’ hospo empire software system Loaded, headed by Richard McLeod. They all spoke at the first NZ Hospo Tech event, held in Queenstown’s Mountain Club last Wednesday. QLDC’s economic development manager Peter Harris, like Wensley, sees the
“It’s about encouraging those people who have fire in their bellies and want to build a team, and making sure that they feel confident they can attract their staff to come here and work.” Long-standing tech champion and executive director of Innovation Queenstown AJ Mason agrees successful tech hubs are defined by the ability to attract talent. “Attraction is what we do. As long as we remain this fiercely desirable place, we’re halfway home.” Queenstown has all the critical elements to support a thriving tech sector and is already a “national and global gathering place”, he says. “Innovation and imagination are fuelled by interaction”. And every step taken to widen the economy to include tech is “a step away from exclusive reliance on NZ’s lowest productivity economic sector . . . to the highest”. The ball is rolling, says Wensley, but there’s still much work to be done. She’s met with both National Party leader Judith Collins and Finance Minister Grant Robertson in recent weeks to push the case the region to become a tech hub, complete with a physical innovation centre. Wensley’s also pushing for the introduction of a tech talent visa, so tech business owners can bring their companies here and also attract staff. “I’ve got companies that are advertising for jobs that didn’t even exist when they created the special talent visa. They need to be revisiting that. Robotics learning there’s no code for that at New Zealand Immigration.”

REFLECTING ON CONNECTING
KEY NUMBERS

It goes without saying, but the past 8 months have been pretty confronting on many levels. Each of us has a story to share filled with lots of challenges and hopefully a few wins along the way.

Spending in the week ending 4th October (first week of school holidays) is 13% below 2019 levels at the same time. Since the end of the national Level 3 lockdown in May, spending has tracked between 10% and 30% below last year, averaging 16% below 2019. Spending is supported by higher than expected levels of domestic tourism spending, which MBIE estimate at being 7% higher than 2019
Yet confronting as the past many months have been, they have also provided a chance to reflect on what is important in life. At or near the top of the list has been in-person human connection with those closest to us. Personally, a major challenge has been the realisation that family and friends feel like a world away – whether they live in New Zealand or somewhere else. It has been tough watching them on a screen go through the highs and lows of life, but not being able to experience those moments with them. For those who work at Queenstown Airport, helping connect the communities in and around the district to other parts of New Zealand and beyond is what motivates so many of us. Sharing the joy and excitement of families and friends connecting at the airport gives us a purpose to keep doing what we do each day. When we were unable to do that during lockdown, an important part of our reason for being was taken away. The old saying that you can’t help someone else if your own house isn’t in order rang true for the airport company in the early days of COVID-19. We worked day (and many nights) to respond to the initial shock and stabilise the business. What kept us going was a true sense of teamwork, our commitment to the community and the support from others.
QT BUSINESS We quickly moved on to consider how we could lend a hand to the businesses operating at Queenstown and Wanaka airports. The reality is that many in the community depend on the airports to sustain themselves and their families. The relief packages that we have offered continue to help local businesses stay afloat and keep people in jobs. It has been heartening to see how these businesses have adapted to a very different operating environment.
GROWING YOUR BUSINESS
Despite the significant impact of COVID-19 on the aviation sector, airlines and airports have worked together and with the Government to reconnect the country by air. This close collaboration has been second to none and the results, including restarting unrestricted domestic flights at Alert Level 2, speak for themselves. At the same time, we have been working closely with our aviation counterparts in Australia to restart trans-Tasman flights as and when both governments decide that it is safe to do so. The airport company has played and will continue to play an active role on both fronts.
You’ve heard similar sentiments from those around you. You may have mentioned some of these phrases yourself?
While much remains uncertain in these very uncertain of times, we will keep working to keep you connected. We are hopeful that trans-Tasman flights will restart from Queenstown Airport sometime in the new year. We’re pleased to welcome Sounds Air’s new direct Wanaka-Christchurch service this week. As many of us have reflected, an arm around the shoulder feels much better when it is connected to a loved one standing by our side rather than virtually across a screen.

• “It’s difficult out there.” • “I don’t know what’s going to happen and I’m worried.”. • “I’ve never had to operate in such uncertain conditions.” • “Everyone is feeling the pinch, people are holding off making decisions.” • “I only have a small percentage of my usual market to work with.”
Well, rather than thinking or worrying about what’s going to happen in a market affected by COVID-19, now’s the time to take action and work to position yourself and your business to take advantage of a shifting and uncertain market. Growing a business is neither simple or easy. It’s like sowing a crop. The growth won’t occur overnight but if you pick the right type of seed, be smart by selecting an area with fertile soil, and manage the growth well, you can maximise the future potential of any harvest.
Now more than ever, your business needs to be viewed as the first and best choice. • Social Media - Your business needs to be positioned and displayed well. With a depressed market, brand recognition could be the difference between securing a new customer and missing out. Get an expert to discuss a plan and support you with your activity. • Work your external team. You have employees, but how well are you working with external associates? Referrals, testimonials, shared business interests, combined contracts, networking. It’s often an untapped goldmine. Contractors? Customers? Partnerships, liaisons, relationships! – get them all on your side. You never know where the next sale will come from. • Get your message out there - Offer training to customers. Speaking engagements. Educate people with blogs or posts. Keep your business and your brand, front and centre.
Have a vision. It takes robust action and contingency planning, effective strategy implementation and a willingness to get in during this difficult time and get your hands dirty.
• Support your local community - They’re hurting too. Find low cost ways to show your community that you care and can live up to your values, even in difficult times.
Don’t just think or talk about it, DO IT!
• Explore additional income streams. Any market share gained now will pay dividends when the market recovers. What other areas in your business have you considered that might align or support core products?
I’ve worked in different industries within the SME sector for years, owning and operating my own companies for many of them. I’ve personally deployed growth strategies and also observed others attempt to create business growth (some successful, some not) and have noted down the best of those below for your consideration. Not all of these will fit your business profile, needs and direction so consider your options and choose the ones that are most appropriate to you and your circumstances. • Data collection - Know your customers. Not just age and gender, but how they think, what their interests are, what values they hold and what business goals they have. Understand your portfolio. The more you understand your customers, the greater your opportunities are to explore and tap new areas within them. Dormant opportunities and value lie within your pool of existing customers. • Customer Service - Don’t be average, be exceptional. How are you standing out against your competitors? Investigate elements that your business can improve on and implement the changes.
• Industriously measure and track your activity - Examine results. Understand trends. Change, adjust, and pivot as needed. If the market is fluid, be prepared to adapt to better suit changing conditions. Now is the time to try to take advantage of your business savvy, your product suite and your internal and external teams. Be positive, be smart, be creative, take risks – but above all, be wise. GOOD NEWS FOR BUSINESS AND THE PLANET FROM AROUND THE WORLD Europe: Electric car sales have smashed through even the most optimistic forecasts. One in 10 new cars sold in 2020 will be electric or hybrid, triple last year’s sales. New forecasts suggest that it will be one in seven in 2021, as manufacturers scramble to comply with tighter emissions standards. France: The world’s largest insect farm is currently under construction an hour north of Paris according to Fast Company. Inside the new farm, robots will hatch, feed, harvest and process mealworms in trays stacked in tall towers, with AI monitoring and optimising environmental conditions. Ÿnsect already has contracts worth $100 million with fish feed producers. Interesting as the sector didn’t exist a few years ago. Ikea, the world famous furniture business, is planning a secondhand furniture venture. The Swedish giant will next month launch a scheme to buy back unwanted items that they previously sold you that you no longer need or want. Under the plan, it will offer vouchers worth up to 50% of the original price, to be spent at its stores. The “Buy Back” initiative will launch to coincide with the US’s Black Friday [Nov 27th]. Global The International Energy Agency said, the number of people without access to electricity dropped from 860 million to 770 million, a new record low. Africa has made particularly good progress; the number of people gaining access to electricity doubled from 9 million a year between 2000 and 2013, to 20 million between 2014 and 2019. Air Quality News reports global sulfur dioxide pollution levels fell by 6% in 2019, according to a new analysis of NASA satellite data. SO2 emissions fell in all three of the world’s top emitter countries – India, Russia and China, only the second time ever that this has happened. Researchers say it’s due to falling coal usage.

Following the merger Queenstown will be home base for the larger agency and will mean some upscaling and new hires. The merger is set to take place from the beginning of November 2020. Moved Organisers of the ‘RemoteTogetherNZ’ festival have made the decision to host the event in March 2021. Originally set for November, festival organiser Trent Yeo says moving it back a few months reflects feedback from interested participants. With COVID curveballs, corporate travel restrictions and Christmas looming, many people still feel like they’re in survival mode and with the purpose of RemoteTogetherNZ to help individuals and businesses to evolve by design, rather than default, it’s important for us to listen to the feedback and give people more time so we can all move forward together. The “one stop adventure shop” includes jetsprint boat and off-road buggy rides, clay bird shooting and “gap filler activities” knife throwing and hole-in-one golf. The development has been several years in making for the Wanaka-based owners – Lloyd Ferguson, Darby Richmond and Tim Bayliss.
Saved A Central Lakes Trust grant of $425,000 towards the Lakes District Museum’s building earthquake strengthening project got over the line. The iconic museum had struggled to find funders to assist before QLDC came to the party with $2million which was approved from the ‘shovel ready’ fund in July 2020, and just over $1 million from QLDC prior to that. With Central Lakes Trust coming to the party for $425,000 and the museum stumping up the rest, and work commenced in October. Built in 1865, the category 2 heritage building had been tagged as earthquake-prone, requiring a $3.5 million strengthening by 2025. Without completing the work the viability of the museum operation was at risk. Appointment Wayfare appoints Stephen England-Hall as Chief Executive. QT BUSINESS NEW BUSINESS PROFILE TOURISM: COMBINING SUSTAINABILITY AND GOOD DEALS Business experts might say launching an online socially-minded tourism company in the middle of the pandemic is bold, but Sam Brough has done just that – launching Kiwi Welcome in October 2020. When asked why? Sam says his motivations were simple: to protect the core attributes that New Zealand’s tourism industry is built on, with its combination of untouched, pristine, natural image and friendly, approachable communities. Kiwi Welcome aims to achieve this by giving New Zealand holiday makers the opportunity to save money and make a lasting positive impact with their visit at the same time. Despite his self-confessed ‘tourism-newbie’ status, Sam believes that now is the perfect time to explore alternative ways of creating and selling value to visitors. “From the outside looking in, it was clear how pricedriven the tourism industry is. Whilst price is a critical element, I don’t believe it’s the only lever available, when looking to attract consumers and drive revenue.” Kiwi Welcome combines the promise of sustainability and savings for visitors, uniquely positioning itself in the New Zealand travel market. Sam says, “Kiwis
love a good deal, but they also care about where their money goes and what’s behind the products or services they consume. There’s evidence of this consumer trend in almost every industry including travel. ”A quietly spoken but determined individual, Sam doesn’t hold back about his frustration with all the talk about a more sustainable form of tourism in New Zealand post Covid, but the complete lack of action. So, after a slight nudge from his mother-in-law, he decided to take matters into his own hands and launch the start-up. Sam, hails from the advertising agency world and has a passion for sustainable tourism and believes it’s essential to make it easy for visitors to do their part. He has discovered that he isn’t alone in this ambition, with many tourism operators having the same shared value. Lockdown in the end was a bit of a godsend for Sam because it bought some time to fine tune the concept, start to get the word out and bring like-minded tourism businesses together. Kiwi Welcome is a win-win and while it’s an often-overused phrase the concept is truly a win for the consumer, the tourism operator and the environment. Sam spent April-July on the road shuttling between Arrowtown where he and his fiancé live, and Queenstown, Wānaka, Cromwell and Clyde to sell his idea face-to-face. With 40 businesses on board, he launched the Kiwi Welcome website publicly last month.
3rd November 2020 | Issue 03 Sam openly admits he has a long way to go. The business is extremely lean as he currently is the only fulltime employee, with support from 2-3 others. Despite its size and being less than a month old, he can already see the first, all be it small, payment being made before Christmas thanks to the membership fees of some early adopters. Six-month memberships are $79, providing users with access to a range of discounts across accommodation, care hire, dining, activities and more. 100% of profits, are then distributed directly to local community and environmental causes in the Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago region. “We’re currently looking for more tourism operators to become partners and broaden out the offering. Our business model is funded by the customer membership fee, not commissions, which means more money to local operators who really need it right now. ,” Sam says. He has an ambitious goal of 10,000 memberships in the first year, which will generate almost half a million dollars of funding for social and environmental causes in the Queenstown-Lakes and Central Otago region. Armed with tenacity and a good idea, Sam plans to make a ‘new’ form of socially-minded tourism a reality in the region and plans to expand nationally in 2021. www.kiwiwelcome.co.nz

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
My husband and I are technologically challenged at the best of times, so we are still in the phonebook and still use our landline. Well, we would use it except the landline hasn’t been working for a while and we struggled to remember who we were signed up with - it’s not Telecom anymore, apparently. It’s SPARK. It’s always good to challenge your patience by trying to ring a company like this - after several weeks of not contacting the right person, I was sent several emails asking me “Did we take ownership of your request?”. I simply have no idea what that means - any suggestions? The landline still doesn’t work. I’m starting to think maybe it’s the trick bit of an early Halloween prank designed to irritate crotchety old bats like me. Halloween has been huge this year - it wasn’t a thing in NZ when we moved here, or even when my children were growing up. I was only seven when we moved to America and I still believed in Father Christmas, but the idea of being allowed to dress up and threaten adults with nastiness if they didn’t give us treats seemed far more fanciful than a jolly fat chap squeezing down our chimney to leave us presents. We dragged our little wagons along and once they were full, we offloaded them at home, never realising that our mother just recycled them and handed our harvest out to all the other little trick or treaters. We specially liked going to the dentist’s house as he gave us tiny tubes of toothpaste and toothbrushes. I worried he’d recognise me when I went a second time as I wanted one for my dolly. He didn’t recognise one more thieving little witch amongst so many others. One of the worries our community is facing is funding The Branches camp for the year 10 students at our wonderful Wakatipu High School. If any locals or businesses have work the students could do, or want to make a donation, do please contact bennieandphill@xtra.co.nz. Going to The Branches is an important rite of passage for local schoolchildren, and has been going for fifty years. They learn how to survive outdoors and do without technology. Beating their fears is a big part of the programme and I love that they are out of internet range for two weeks. I should probably try it, too.

Even a brief stint out of range is stressful for me. The West Coast is a very black hole internetwise - I’ve just been checking it out for a story I’m writing for the brand new SCOUT magazine which launches next month. I’m even being paid to do it - such a tough job! So tough that my friends volunteered to join me in my arduous task. We roared up to Hokitika in just six hours, barely stopping as the rain was so heavy, and there were few options of fun activities in such a deluge. As soon as the sun appeared next morning, we were off on our bikes on the Wilderness Trail - it is briliant and the biggest problem was not stopping every five minutes to ooh and aah over some new gorgeous view or tiny fern. Whatever your physical or financial level is, there are masses of treats - we kayaked on the Okarito Lagoon to see the beautiful rare white herons who struggled to hold our attention with the great Southern Alps so perfectly mirrored in the water. Wilderness Lodge at Lake Moeraki is the place to go if you want to see everything - they have made all sorts of trails that are only for their guests - we spent a blissful few hours on the beach watching busy little Fiordland crested penguins waddling up and down to feed their greedy babies, and at night, after an excellent feast at the lodge (nothing like the regurgitated fish those poor baby penguins get) we went for a postprandial excursion to get a very close up look at the glorious glowworms, and found freshwater crayfish in the streams. Moreporks did their owly calls across the lake and the moon was so bright even through the clouds that we barely needed torches. Next morning we were taken on more secret trails for more surprises and now that we’re home, I finally had time to read the list of other walks I NEED to do there. See you soon, West Coast! Te Papa for teenage Queenstown artist
by Paul Taylor
A young Queenstown artist’s anti-racism poster will become part of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa historical collection. Minna Zhu’s artwork was announced as one of the winners of the Aotearoa Poster Competition by Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon on Friday. The four winning artworks tackle issues of race, diversity and inclusion for Asian New Zealanders in the aftermath of Covid-19, where the Chinese community experienced an increase in racist behaviour towards them. The winning poster artworks will be rolled out in public spaces in cities nationwide and they’re also being acquired by Te Papa as works of national significance. Year 11 student Minna won the ‘young persons’ category.
“Collecting the winning posters from the inaugural Aotearoa Poster Competition will allow Te Papa to record not only the wonderful creative efforts of the artists, but also the perspectives and motivations of the organisers who set it up.” A panel of experts chose the three category winners, while more than 1000 people voted for the popular vote category. Auckland artist Chloe Or won the popular vote, Auckland artist Raymund Santos was judged the best ‘new and emerging artist’ and Wellington artist Nicholas Reid took the ‘established artist’ category. Lynda Chanwai-Earle, a Chinese New Zealand award winning playwright and radio host, was part of the judging panel and says it was no easy feat selecting just three winners from an entry pool of such a high calibre. “As a judge I was impressed by the artistic quality of each entry, alongside the artists’ commitment to uphold the key message of inclusiveness for all in Aotearoa,” says Lynda. With each artist coming from a different background, each artwork tells a unique story of that person’s worldview and their lived experiences in relation to the competition theme. In addition to being acquired by Te Papa, the four winning artworks will also be used in a nationwide street poster campaign sponsored by Phantom Billstickers, with an aim to further conversations about race, diversity and inclusion throughout Aotearoa. Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon presented the winners with their awards at the prize giving ceremony on 30 October. Mr Foon congratulated the winners, as well as the project team for their success with the ambitious project. “I’d like to acknowledge the vision of Bev and the team for their hard work in facilitating this very important work to eliminate racism. Give nothing to racism. Art was the medium and this was very innovative, and of course the artists’ creations are very inspirational to all.”
“I don’t think it’s truly sunk in that I am technically a winning recipient for a national competition, or that people have seen my poster and thought it was deserving of something,” she says. “With the rollercoaster that has been 2020, the excitement from this feels misplaced. Welcome, but misplaced. However, I do have to add that in a way, winning this has made me hungry for more.” The academically-ambitious youngster is interested in all things art. “Deciding to enter this competition didn’t require a second thought. “I had read the entry information on a Google Classroom (thanks Mr Richards), and I felt almost compelled to enter because of how much the theme resonated with me personally. “Being someone who is passionate about racial matters, art, and who is also of Chinese descent, there wasn’t anything stopping me from translating my own enthusiasm for the subject into something physical. “So, in a sense, my poster is the product of my energy and experiences; it’s personal, and has a lot of ‘me’ in it. I think that’s why it holds significance to me.” One of the competition organisers Bev Hong describes the decision by Te Papa as “momentous”. “It’s an acknowledgment of the lived experience of many Asian including Chinese-New Zealanders, and validation of the messages that these posters convey”, says Ms Hong. ‘It’s been such a privilege to be part of the team working in collaboration with Chinese community groups and others in this shared kaupapa. “Te Papa’s acquisition of the artwork means the spirit of the project and the stories told as part of it will be preserved. The collection captures a snapshot of this moment, and this year, in New Zealand society and preserves it in history with an everlasting stamp.” Dr Grace Gassin, Curator, Asian New Zealand Histories at Te Papa, says they are thrilled to give support to a much needed conversation. “As a national institution, we are delighted to be able to signal our support for the competition’s anti-racist kaupapa. Asian New Zealanders’ experiences of, and courageous responses to, the targeted racism they have endured during the Covid-19 pandemic are an important part of the national conversation,” says Dr Gassin.
