Labour Party Candidate for Southland speaks to Queenstown Queenstown needs a strong advocate, and if supported on 7 November, I intend to step into that role. My family’s connection with the town dates back to 1971, when my grandfather bought a crib on Frankton Road so his two daughters, both married to Southland farmers, could meet and holiday together. Although farm life in Dipton always demanded our time, much of my upbringing was shaped by Queenstown, from Eichardt’s Tavern, Alberts, and Chicos to fishing, skiing, and the floods of 1999. One of the greatest risks facing our community is the fast-track consenting process. Labour has the ability and the will to amend it, so it better reflects our community’s expectations. If we do not rein it in, Queenstown risks irreversible change. LTSA traffic advice to council indicates that each outer-suburban dwelling generates about 8.2 vehicle movements a day. With roughly 11,000 homes in the fast-track pipeline, that could mean about 90,000 additional vehicle movements every day. My fear is that by the time we fully understand the scale of development still to come, we may already have lost the character of the town, the very thing that draws us here and binds us together. National has been clear that it has no intention of slowing the fast-track process. If there was ever a time for a single-issue vote, it is now. From the community’s perspective, the centrepiece of the regional deal was the bed tax. National cut across this much-needed source of new funding to pursue its own politics, and that was a major let-down for Queenstown Lakes. I have attended 20 drop-in sessions across the Southland electorate, and many conversations return to affordability. People feel the pressure directly, but they are also worried for their children and grandchildren. They fear essentials we once expected, including healthcare, education, housing, and decent jobs, will become harder to access. That is why affordability sits at the heart of many of Labour’s policy pledges. My background is that of a sheep farmer who has contributed widely to Dipton and Southland: 31 years as a volunteer firefighter, six years as a FENZ peer supporter, six years on the Southland Conservation Board, and six years as a Southland regional councillor. I also bring practical experience in pest control, wilding conifers, and land-based issues. I have the experience, the history, and the commitment to advocate strongly for Queenstown Lakes, its people, and its future. On 7 November, I’m asking for your vote to protect what makes Queenstown Lakes special, secure the services and infrastructure our community needs, and ensure local voices are heard where decisions are made. I intend to be that advocate for Queenstown Lakes. Peter McDonald , candidate for the Southland Seat in Parliament

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Local year 8 student from takes home win at national competition Zac Perkins, a year 8 student at Wānaka’s Mt Aspiring College, has taken home the Rock-Solid Bassist award at the 2026 Rockshop Bandquest for his exceptional talent on the instrument. The regional tour attracted the involvement of over 300 primary and intermediate bands, offering them the unique opportunity to form bands, perform live and bring their classroom education onto a stage with professional-grade gear. Twenty-six bands made it to the final, the pool made up of bands placing first at their regional event, where they won $300 of musical equipment from the Rockshop for their school music department, as well as the opportunity to submit a two-song video for the online National Final judging. Performing a combination of original songs and interpretations of covers selected by the students, the bands taking home awards represented Waikato, Canterbury, Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Otago, the Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay, with both first and second place – Cavemen and The Reset – hailing from the
capital. Cavemen, the year 8 winners, performed an indie-rock original called ‘Scars’ and ‘Sweet Child O’Mine’ by Guns N’ Roses. Judge and artist Riiki was awed by the level of talent evident among these tamariki; “I was truly blown away by the amount of talent in this year’s Bandquest competition! In particular, the drummers really stole the show for me this year! The level of songwriting is also very impressive – very much that of musicians much older than them. I am very excited for these young tamariki to keep developing their music and to watch them grow through their musical journey.” Rockquest Promotions Co-Founder and Director, Glenn Common, adds; “Since Bandquest launched in 2011, we’ve really noticed how programmes like this benefit the creative confidence of our young people. It’s so inspiring watching young kids take the stage for the very first time and realise their potential, all the while having a fun time with their friends
and classmates. We’re fortunate enough to meet Bandquest participants again in later years when they take part in Smokefreerockquest and Smokefree Tangata Beats, and it’s a huge privilege to be a part of these formative musical beginnings.”

Analysis - The ASB finance leaders’ debate in Queenstown has traditionally been a feisty and unpredictable event, where canny politicians can go off script and feed off the energy of the often-boisterous live audience. This year’s event was another fiery and fun affair to add to the impressive Queenstown debate canon. However, while there were plenty of zingers, one-liners and fierce exchanges, the debate probably didn’t have quite the crazy fizz of past years. A new, larger venue, with its bigger crowd of 800, mostly in the dark, possibly didn’t help when it came to connecting with the debaters. However, I suspect the stakes and nature of the polls in this election may have also played a part. Unlike previous elections, we had four minor-party leaders on stage with the two main parties, who were anything but bit players. And they acted like they knew it too. ACT’s David Seymour, the Greens’ Chlöe Swarbrick, the Opportunities Party’s Qiulae Wong and New Zealand First’s Shane Jones all spoke and debated with a confidence that signalled they expected, and would demand, big roles in shaping the next government. None of them looked out of place or diminished alongside National’s Nicola Willis and Labour’s Barbara Edmonds. That’s not to say Willis and Edmonds were giving them a free run. Both got stuck in and had clearly honed their attack lines after debating each other repeatedly over recent weeks. Edmonds appeared to have a strong night. She talked up her skills as a tax lawyer repeatedly and seemed to be full of confidence that I’m not sure was as evident a few years ago. Interestingly, though, she still felt the need to hammer the point that she would be the next finance minister, not Willis or, indeed, Swarbrick. The reference to Swarbrick seemed to be a kickback at the Greens’ strong polling and the suggestion a week or so back from the Greens’-leader that she was seriously coveting the job. Willis also appeared assured and was at her best attacking Edmonds over her capital gains tax and the decision to scrap the Investment Boost policy. But then she copped some friendly fire from Seymour, who stressed he would, if elected, try to stop her “nuts” plans to break up the Foodstuffs supermarket chain. Seymour delivered some good one-liners throughout the night and pushed hard on the need to cut red tape and foster entrepreneurs. He was hamstrung, to a degree, by the topics, with the party’s core issue of debt and the state of the books not featuring strongly. Wong, meanwhile, looked comfortable enough talking up her land tax proposal and insisting that economic growth and protecting the environment weren’t mutually exclusive. However, she was more restrained in interjecting than the others and suffered from a lack of airtime as a result. Jones had no such qualms, butting in with quips about his fast-track legislation and the benefits of mining. His bombastic approach and colourful language won plenty of laughs and cheers from the audience. At one point, he even seemed to celebrate some rare common ground with Swarbrick on the issue of whether the government should allow councils to impose bed taxes. Jones begrudgingly said he would join the Greens, Labour and The Opportunities Party in backing bed taxes, as he was so sick of having to debate the issue. For Swarbrick, it was also another focused and disciplined performance, following on from a solid multi-party debate earlier in the week. The debate didn’t deliver any major new revelations or policies. Although we did learn that New Zealand First is now the only party that would most likely not sign up to an accord on the future of superannuation next term. Nevertheless, this was an entertaining and useful debate that should have helped give voters a better understanding of what the options are for the country’s economic future.

Fighting on Beach Street Police were called to a fight outside the Beach Street toilets on Wednesday, 7 October. Two males and a female were allegedly engaged in a verbal altercation, which turned physical with all parties pushing and shoving each other. One of the parties involved was located a short time later, allegedly trying to start fights at a backpackers. A 33 year old Central Otago male was arrested and released with a formal written warning for disorderly behaviour.

Summer concerns for volunteer firefighters Recently returned from three weeks helping during the massive US wildfires in Washington and Oregon, Fenz Otago assistant district commander Bobby Lamont says his greatest concern, should the much-heralded Super El Nino eventuate, is volunteer firefighter fatigue. “I’m weary heading into our summer if the long, dry, hot summer that’s being predicted comes to pass as it will be a long summer for our (volunteer) people,” Lamont says. “I’m not overly concerned about the resources available to fight any fires that may start as we have amazing resources in Otago and Southland. However, I’m concerned that it could be really tough on our firefighters, especially as they’re all volunteers, all of whom have to respond, and there could be some responding often,” he says. He’s concerned about possible fatigue among the crews trying to keep on top of any wildfires or vegetation fires, if the conditions predicted do eventuate, and people welfare. “We’ll deal with what comes at us, but we will be monitoring that fatigue and welfare. That will be the biggest thing,” he says.
Don’t be fooled, rescuers say Backcountry rescue experts are reiterating safety warnings for any recreational hikers and climbers heading up into the hills to be weary of spring avalanches and not to venture beyond their capabilities. Epic social media shots have lured many a young overseas hiker out of their depth into danger around the Wakatipu and Wānaka in recent seasons, with locals being caught out too. Rescuers say as summer approaches with warm temperatures forecast spring snow melt could still pose some risks. Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team coordinator Russ Tilsley says the likes of Ben Lomond and The Remarkables are territory that people need to be well prepared for at present before they take it on. “You need the right experience, equipment and skills to go into some of these areas,” Tilsley says. “We’re seeing snowfalls a lot later in the season now too and these can build up over cornices.” He says it doesn’t take a big avalanche to knock someone off a cliff so extreme care is still needed in spring as temperatures warm and the snow softens. All backcountry hikers should stick to their capabilities, know the terrain they’re heading into and it’s imperative that they carry several reliable forms of communication, including either a personal locator beacon and/or inReach satellite device, he says. “You can’t guarantee cellphone coverage in the mountains.” With a busy season of rescues last summer, they’re urging people to be prepared and know the skill, experience and fitness level required. Two young Australian men in their early 20s on a mission to climb Mount Aspiring last December had to be rescued by helicopter just across from the Bonar Glacier on their journey in after suffering from severe exhaustion.

ON THE APP THIS WEEK The Helicopter Line ordered to pay $17,740 over the unjustified dismissal of Mount Cook cafe employee - by RNZ Just two weeks after being ordered to forfeit two of its $1 million helicopters to the Crown for illegal crayfish gathering, The Helicopter Line has found itself in turbulence again. The Queenstown company has now been rapped by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) over its unjustified dismissal of former cafe employee Jonathan Lovatt following the closure of its Delta Tasman Cafe near Mount Cook in 2024. In an ERA decision, authority member Antoinette Baker said The Helicopter Line (THL) “fell well short” of treating Lovatt fairly, and found the company effectively blamed him for the cafe’s closure after he allegedly refused to train new staff and take on other duties. “It ended his employment suddenly for reasons of fault without any evidence of a process
addressing those things beforehand.” Lovatt worked as a cafe assistant for THL for eight months in 2024. His employment was ended in a December 2, 2024, letter from THL director Mark Quickfall. The letter stated that during Quickfall’s previous visit to Mount Cook, he and Lovatt had discussed changing the cafe business model to ensure it could continue operating. They agreed to wind back the menu and serve coffee, cabinet food and other self-serve items. The model required the support of all managers and staff. But Quickfall wrote that the acting cafe manager had since told him Lovatt was unwilling to help order food, support the cafe while replacement staff were recruited after two employees left, or train new staff.
“Unfortunately, the situation at the cafe is out of our control and despite extensive advertising it will take time to find and induct staff. We will close the cafe from 5 December,” the letter read. “As per your contract we will pay you two weeks’ notice from today. We will also require you to vacate the staff accommodation. We are unable to meet your requirements and are now forced to close the cafe.” The cafe has since reopened. Quickfall told the authority that Lovatt had been made redundant and said THL had consulted with him through a series of meetings and discussions before the decision was made. However, Baker rejected THL’s claim that Lovatt’s dismissal was a genuine redundancy. Read the full story online.

On Friday, 25 September, the famous Filipino band, The Itchyworms, performed for 350 people here in Queenstown. The concert was produced by locals Joyce Nagal and her husband Tino, who were very happy with how the event went, hoping it will encourage more artists to stop by our region. Nagal describes the concert as history for the Filipino community and wants to say a massive thank you to the Queenstown and nearby town communities for being a part of this epic event. The Itchyworms toured around New Zealand performing in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown. “Thanks to the huge turnout, Filipino musicians have now started eyeing up Queenstown as a new destination for their NZ concert tours moving forward,” Nagal says. It’s not uncommon for Queenstown to be skipped when it comes to Filipino artists, Nagal explaining they usually only go to major cities. “The success of this event has opened up opportunities for Queenstown to now host future Filipino concert tours and bring music to Queenstown and nearby towns.” It was made more special for the couple as they took on the challenge of producing the show from the main producers, Fast Event Productions and MAD Talents. “We did this simply because we love music and concerts, and we wanted to share the joy of music to our beloved Queenstown and Filipino community, and most of all, we want to promote Queenstown, our home, to all the Filipino artists in the Philippines.” Jugs Jugueta, vocalist and guitarist of The Itchyworms, was stoked to play here. “Queenstown is 100% the most beautiful city that The Itchyworms has played for,” he says. “What makes it extra special is that Akin Ka na lang Queenstown was the first ever Filipino concert in Queenstown. We got to meet a lot of the beautiful Filipinos in Otago. We love you all!”

Around the world and back again by Jessica Allen
Dick Hubbard has served as Mayor of Auckland, circumnavigated the world two up on a motorcycle up with his wife Diana and founded Hubbard Foods with social responsibility at its heart. His memoir, Life’s a Bowl of Cereal, blends humour, candour and reflects on his life, and he’ll be talking all about it at this year’s Queenstown Writers Festival. Dick writes with warmth, humour and honesty about leadership, values and the importance of making a positive difference. Now based in Queenstown with his wife Diana, he continues to champion philanthropy, sustainability and community wellbeing. “It’s about all ages and stages,” Hubbard says of his book. “I’ll be 80 later this year and I figured if I didn’t do it relatively soon, it probably wouldn’t get done and I wanted to achieve a couple of things.” One was to impart a sense for his love of adventure, which is woven throughout the novel and a very important aspect of his life Something he’s had since he was young, he really wanted to impart that curiosity on readers – go out, take risks and extend yourself, and the feeling that comes from a good adventure. The other thing that was important was capturing the Hubbard Foods story, which was established in 1988.
"Sometimes you just have to look at the lighter side of life and the almost-ridiculous situations that you get yourself in.”
“We took the company down a fairly unique path. I think with our advocacy for companies and sustainability, and social responsibility, we were one of the earlier voices in that area.” Hubbard sold the business around five years ago, with only one quick break in the middle where he served as Mayor of Auckland between 2004 – 2007. This was a chapter in his life that he described as an interesting contrast between the business world and political world. “The ground rules are very different in both worlds, and I came in as a political novice because I hadn’t had any involvement in central government or local government politics before then but it was quite a stimulating experience. I think we achieved a lot in Auckland.” Another part of his life that’s explored in the book is his world travels and motorcycle adventures. He and wife Diana are the oldest couple to circumnavigate the world, two up on a motorcycle by both the polar and equatorial routes. They’ve been to about 85 countries and done around 400,000 kms over the last 10 – 12 years. Diana was hesitant to get on a bike at first, but she warmed up to the idea. “My wife was never going to get on the back of a motorbike – it was too dangerous, too uncomfortable. I persuaded her to ride on the back of a motorbike from Picton to Blenheim and if she didn’t particularly enjoy that, it was only 20km or so, she could hop on an airplane at Blenheim and fly down to Queenstown while I brought the motorbike down. She hopped on the back and she’s never hopped off.” He’ll be interviewed by journalist Amanda Robertshaw, who has won both national and international awards for her work as a journalist and film maker. She has extensive experience on daily networks and regional news programmes, and does an amazing job at helping individuals to tell their story. While Hubbard isn’t sure what direction the conversation will take, he hopes to entertain the audience. “It’s not just a case of taking the serious side of things. I’ve tried to keep the book itself reasonably light and recount some of the humorous anecdotes, situations and paradoxes that have come our way over the years because I very strongly believe that a core sense of humour is very important in what you do and how you go about it. Sometimes you just have to look at the lighter side of life and the almost-ridiculous situations that you get yourself in.” Dick Hubbard will be in conversation with Amanda Robertshawe at Te Atamira on Friday, 6 November at 2.30pm. You can grab tickets and find more information at qtwritersfestival.nz/
A quick clarification on Kate Camp’s sessions at Queenstown Writers Festival from our story two weeks ago – she will have her In Conversation with Debbie Jamieson at Te Atamira on Sunday, 8 November at 4pm. She'll also join fellow memoirwriter Charlotte Grimshaw on Tuesday, 5 November, at 5.30pm at Queenstown Library as they discuss the joys and pitfalls of writing their own story.

ON THE APP THIS WEEK That’s a wrap - last of the South Island’s ski fields closes Photo credit Sean Newens/Cardrona Alpine Resort. Skiers - Daisy Woods (pink jacket) and Luke Jurgo (tan jacket)
This past weekend was closing weekend at Cardrona – the last ski area in the South Island to close. Lucky skiers and snowboarders were treated to one last hurrah of winter with 24cm of fresh snow on Friday. Cardrona and Treble Cone Chief Mountains Officer, Laura Hedley, says it’s been a season to remember. “We had a slow start waiting for winter to arrive, but when it did come, it was all on. We’ve had a massive winter welcoming guests from New Zealand, Australia, and further abroad, hosted world-class events like the Jossi Wells Invitational and The Snow League, and had a spring full of storms and topups of snow that saw us right through the end of the season.” The weekend’s festivities on the mountain included the resort’s annual Bikes on Snow event, the BoomClub Blueprint rail jam hosted by Olympic gold medallist Nico Porteous, and a live DJ set by Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss.

JANE SHAW
Queen of the sticky bun
She’s launched three successful local food businesses and one of Central Otago’s most iconic fresh produce markets, her sticky buns still legendary years after she retired. Jane Shaw has cooked for everyone from Kiwi shearing gangs to wealthy UK estate owners, but somehow as a young woman Arrowtown’s Jane Shaw always thought she should have a “proper career”. Born in Kuala Lumpur in 1962, her dad among a team of post-war Kiwis surveying the jungle, they moved back to Christchurch when she was small, then Hawkes Bay when Jane was 15. She was strong at athletics and netball and loved to cook with her mum. Otago Uni then seemed like the most faraway option from her strict Catholic upbringing and after initially studying dentistry she did a psychology degree. “I should’ve studied Home Science.”
Cooking saved the day on her OE, Jane cooking for wealthy London families through an agency and for an Irishman who owned a 13th Century castle in Galway, Ireland. “Back in New Zealand I thought I should get a real career and I liked writing.” After paying off the credit card cooking for shearers, she spent a post graduate year doing the Wellington journalism course, opting afterward for PR. She handled publicity on NZ’s first pandas at Auckland Zoo, was publicist for TVNZ’s ‘Gloss’ series, the last of the Top Town series and the hugely popular ‘It’s In The Bag’ with broadcasting legend Selwyn Toogood. After meeting husband of 35 years, Hal, both keen skiers, they managed a ski lodge in Dinner Plain, Victoria, Jane running the kitchen. A tour around the South Island looking for jobs saw them based in Milford Sound for four years in the early 1990s managing Fiordland Travel’s operations, Jane just 29, both very young managers. Fiordland Travel built new boats, Jane helping design the galleys and new menus.
Jane, right, and the kids on deck at the Farmers Market in Cromwell back in the day
Jane enjoying retirement, walking the Kaikoura Coastal Trail
Three weeks was the longest they were cut off there with the roads out due to snow. “I loved the road closures and avalanches as nobody could get in so we got to take the staff out fishing,” she grins. That was until their first son, Angus, was due in 1994, Hal super keen to obey instructions bundling Jane into the car with a storm brewing. “At my last doctor’s appointment in Queenstown he gave Hal an umbilical cord clamp. Two weeks before my due date when the avalanche manager told us we had half an hour to drive out or the road would be closed for the next two to three weeks Hal bundled me into the car very quickly,” she grins.
“I loved the road closures and avalanches as nobody could get in so we got to take the staff out fishing.” Hal ran the Te Anau Glowworm Caves for a year, and they then moved to Queenstown, by now with daughter Harriet in tow. Jane worked briefly for MP Gavan Herlihy, then Destination Queenstown, before she and foodie friend Pauline Murphy hatched a plan to launch Provisions of Central Otago in Old Cromwell Town over a family picnic in Glenorchy. “There was all this amazing wine, orchards and creative, talented people but no one was doing anything value added with all that beautiful fruit that was rotting on the ground,” she says. Orchardists soon began ringing to invite them to help themselves. “It was amazing, a really creative, exciting time.” Farmers Markets were emerging in a few larger centres and they launched the first in the Central Otago-Wakatipu region. In no time they’d become the local bakers too, making sourdough, Pauline the ‘bagel queen’.
Jane, Hal and Taika - Hal has played a huge role in Jane’s success
It was here Jane’s famous sticky buns were born. “It just took off. People would buy at a Sunday market over summer and clean us out of hundreds of sticky buns and preserves.” At times it was a real juggling act, Hal travelling a lot in Asia for his work. “It was really tough on Hal and the kids,” she says. By 2010 they’d leased the beautifully restored Romans Cottage, an 1870s miner’s cottage in Arrowtown, launching Provisions of Arrowtown when there were few cafes there. “We just did it at the right time. People already knew our sticky buns and jam.” Jane bought Pauline out around 2015, selling up herself in 2023 after nearly 14 years. By then she also owned Boat Shed Café in the Frankton Marina, which she started in 2012 in another beautifully restored historic building, by then running three businesses. She sold the Cromwell operation around 2018, Queenstown so “crazy busy” that she sold The Boat Shed in late 2019, just prior to the Covid lockdowns. While she had fantastic loyal staff others would ring at 8am and say, ‘Uh, I can’t come to work today’. They’d close up early and make 100 cottage pies though to donate to Baskets of Blessing for the freezer. By 2023 Jane had turned 60 and “decided hospitality was for the younger ones”. She hung up her apron after making thousands of sticky buns and sold up. “I do miss it all, my lovely team and customers.” Jane’s always been a strong Arrowtown community supporter, sponsoring fundraisers: “This is such a great community. I’d be no-one without them.” She served for several years on the Arrowtown Business Promotion Association, is still on the Plunket Garden Tour Committee and together with the Shaw pet springer spaniel cross, Taika, enjoys volunteering for Canine Pet Therapy at Remarkables School.

SPRING It’s officially spring in Queenstown - the mountains have closed, the temperature is rising and the flowers are in bloom. Let’s be honest, we can probably expect another cold snap before the sun really sticks around, but let’s bask in it while we can. If you’re excited to jump into the garden, you can head to the free Dr Compost Workshops at Sherwood - check out his column in this week’s edition, too. Or if you’re feeling inspired with the change of the season, Queenstown Writer’s Festival is just around the corner, there’s also New Zealand Symphony’s Orchestra’s Serenade programme, MindJam 2026, which is a series of informal conversations with some of NZ’s leading thinkers, concerts, running events, and so much more.

For the first time, they’re offering families the chance to try out their After School programme before committing to a full-term booking. LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
Getting Back to Our Roots Occasional thoughts from Dr Compost – let us know if there are any topics you’d like the Dr to cover. This month’s big picture October is the month we hit 20 degree days (hopefully), have a few frosty mornings and maybe even snow on the ground. If I remember correctly, 31 October last year was a doozy... It’s fair to assume there will be plenty of spring winds and hopefully plenty of spring rains, so what does this all mean for us in the garden? Don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s still early in the growing season, we’re just starting. Don’t go putting tomatoes or pumpkins outside yet. Even in a tunnel/glass house they will need some extra protection from hard cold snaps. So, pace yourself. You can warm up some beds using black plastic to allow the soil to soak up the spring sun. Warm soils mean faster growing vegetables and seeds that germinate. Lots of seeds need a minimum soil temperature to sprout. Carrots need the soil to be above 13°C. Scraping winter mulch aside to expose the soil will also allow the soil to heat up faster. You’ll also get a flush of spring weeds popping up. Chop and drop these back onto the bed to break down, adding much organic matter to our southern soils. Get into it Soil fertility is key to a successful gardening year. Grab some quality compost and pop it onto your veggie beds. Spread a 1-2cm deep layer across the top in the spring and then every time you plant/sow a new crop. When was the last time you mineralised your soil? This should be a yearly event. Grab yourself some garden lime and a bag of rock minerals, apply it to the soil as directed on the bag and then add your compost layer on top. In the veggie patch Labour Weekend (24 October this year) is traditionally when gardeners go nuts and plant out their veggie gardens. However, I’m already starting to plant veggie seedlings that I’ve bought or grown, but only the hardy crops for now: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. They’ve had a few days sitting on the veggie patch in their pots, exposed to the elements to harden them off. They need
this as they’ve either come from my warm kitchen, the glass house or the garden store. All these places are cozy and comfy compared to the weather extremes of my veggie garden so a couple of days just sitting outside really helps to ease the planting shock. Once planted I like to give them a little health tonic. Some liquid seaweed is the gardener’s secret elixir to help them cope with any shocks. I’m also sowing my leafy green salad bowl bed regular readers will be familiar with this obsession of mine! Around Labour Weekend, I’ll ramp up the planting with spring onions, onions, carrot seed, leeks, spinach, celery and parsley. I will sow pumpkin seeds indoors as it can still be too early for pumpkins outside while cucumbers ultimately should grow well in the tunnel house or in a very hot spot in the garden. Your compost needs you! Give your winter compost heap a good turn, mixing everything up vigorously, adding some moisture if needed. Now’s a good time to top up your carbon stores for the compost season ahead, but how do you do that? A bale of straw, some wood chips, some shredded cardboard, autumn leaves are great carbon additions. As a rule of thumb you should add at least 50% carbon ingredients to your veggie scraps. If you’re not composting yet, get along to one of our Spring gardening workshops at Sherwood later this month. Vegetable in the spotlight Radishes are one of the fastest growing vegetables we can grow but they need lots of water. This year, why not try growing a daikon radish? Originally from Japan these can grow into tasty monsters, giving you bang for your buck. While English and French radishes will suddenly bolt and be done for if you don’t pick them in time, daikons can keep growing so you get a much longer harvesting timeframe, and they’re still delicious as they grow bigger. Finally… Are you a brand new gardener looking to grow delicious home-grown veggies? This new opportunity wants you. With mentor support and a ‘free’ veggie garden bed it’s a great way to kick start your gardening career.
Check out Kiwi Harvest’s gardening programme starting this month. For Wānaka, Queenstown and Cromwell. All veggie beds are made from upcycled materials, filled with amazing compost and you get ongoing support from cool, local, master gardeners. Sign up at this link. www.kiwiharvest.org.nz/khh Tips and tools. Frost cloth! This is a magical tool for the gardener that I will come back to again and again over the months ahead. Either put directly over crops or on a hoop system. The frost cloth gives you a 4°C buffer to outside temperatures. Your own little heat pump for your veggie bed. Need more advice get on to the Dr Compost Facebook page and ask us some questions. Happy Gardening!
