WEEKEND 10–11 OCTOBER

John Kirwan’s Winning Game Plan for Youth Mental Health When I was playing rugby for the All Blacks, people thought I had everything figured out. But behind closed doors, I was fighting a silent battle with depression. Opening up about my own mental health was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it taught me a crucial lesson: asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Today, as I look across Aotearoa, I see our young people fighting battles of their own. New Zealand currently holds the second highest youth suicide rate in the OECD, with one in five young Kiwis meeting the threshold for high psychological distress. From social media pressure and family financial stress to academic strain, bullying, and isolation, our kids are navigating a perfect storm - and too many are reaching crisis point. Historically, our national approach to mental health has focused on reactive crisis care - we have needed the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. But what if we gave our children the tools to avoid falling off the cliff altogether? We teach our kids how to stay safe on the road, in the water, and online, yet we rarely teach them how to navigate their emotional health. This is where the Mitey program comes in. Designed alongside educators from the University of Auckland, psychologists and schools, we could see the long-term benefit in an evidence-based, school-wide approach to mental health education for primary and intermediate tamariki (Years 1–8). Whether through reading, art, or story writing, children build age-appropriate mental health capabilities, learning how to express and manage their emotions and wellbeing and to seek help, long before reaching high school. Since 2021, Mitey has grown into 342 schools across New Zealand, equipping over 100,000 children with essential capabilities. However, 236 schools remain on our waitlist - including many right here in Central Otago and Southland. To meet this demand, we have launched our ‘Drive for Five’ campaign, aiming to raise $5 million to scale Mitey to every school in need. We don’t want the money to come from one source, we want all of New Zealand to get behind Mitey. Just five dollars from one million New Zealanders has the power to spark a lasting generational shift in youth mental health. It’s hard not to get excited about that. Ending this crisis is not a solo sprint; it is the ultimate team effort. Supported by our partners I am taking Mitey on the road around New Zealand. I invite the Queenstown community to join our team, get behind our tamariki, and help us ensure every child has the support they need to thrive. Thank you, Queenstown, for welcoming me into your community. By just knowing about the Mitey program you are helping. By supporting the Drive for Five campaign you are helping all the young Kiwis avoid the cliff. Visit www.miteydriveforfive.co.nz to find out more. Sir John Kirwan. ON THE APP THIS WEEK Fatal crash closes road, Kawarau Falls, Queenstown One person has died in a single vehicle crash on State Highway 6 (Kingston Road), Kawarau Falls on Sunday morning. It happened shortly before 4am between the intersections of Peninsula Road and Boyd Road. Two people in the car had serious injuries, one had critical injuries, while one died at the scene. The Serious Crash Unit was in attendance, with the road closed for part of Sunday.

Army intelligence specialist Arthur Finegan ordered to pay $1500 for assaulting Queenstown taxi driver - By RNZ New Zealand Army intelligence specialist Arthur Finegan denied a “nasty” assault - until he was confronted with CCTV footage showing an attack that left a taxi driver unconscious. He then blamed the driver for interrupting him and two associates after they failed to pay a $20 fare on New Year’s Day and fled on foot. The group had been out drinking late in Queenstown on 1 January. Soon after fleeing without paying, the driver caught up to them and asked for the money. But instead of paying, Finegan, an 18-year-old private with high-security clearance privileges in the Army, grabbed the driver by the scruff of the neck and turned him around. One associate then kicked him in the back of the leg while Finegan threw a barrage of left-arm punches at the driver’s face. Another associate struck the driver in the back of the head, causing him to fall to the concrete

ground. Finegan then started kicking the driver, striking him three times in the torso as he lay in a fetal position. He then walked to the driver’s head and continued the assault as two bystanders tried to pull him backwards. Using a powerful right kick, he struck the driver three more times in the face and head. He was pulled away by an associate and fled the scene. The driver was knocked out and received cuts to his lip, abrasions and bruising to his face. He was unable to move his jaw for days after the assault. Finegan appeared for sentencing on a charge of injuring with intent to injure in the Christchurch District Court last week. Judge Walsh discharged Finegan without conviction and ordered him to pay $1500 for emotional harm.

Fire and Gold by Sue Fea

Retired fire investigator Stu Ide, left, going for gold with his star gold panning family, from left, NZ Champion Phoebe Ide, 19, son Mike, NZ Men’s Champion and local granddaughter Hana-Kahurangi, 6

Queenstown’s Ide family has not only produced two dedicated local volunteer firefighters, but they’re a pretty good bunch of gold diggers too. Retired longtime local fire safety investigator Stu Ide, a volunteer firefighter for decades, senior firefighter son Mike, daughter Megan, and two granddaughters have all been going for gold at the World Gold Panning Championships held in Cromwell. With Stu and Megan, a local schoolteacher, both former World Champions after winning their three-person event at the World Championships in Scotland in 2017, last week’s event was all about trying to reclaim their title. Covid put paid to the world event for a few years then the Ides missed the event in Spain last year as they were busy working hard to stage the first ever NZ World Championships just finished. However, the family all took out prizes at the NZ Championships last year. Dad and Megan were shaping up to make the finals again late last week, while Mike’s teenage daughter Phoebe Ide, Stu’s granddaughter, a Dunedin student from Queenstown, was proving to be a force to be reckoned with as the current NZ Champion overall. Little Hana-Kahurangi, 6, also Stu’s granddaughter and Megan’s daughter, placed second in the World Under 12s section last week. Not wanting to be beat two Ide cousins from Australia just happened to roll up for the NZ Champs Novice section while visiting last year and also got hooked by the lure of gold, Megan says. They also competed last week in the Worlds. The Ides definitely proved tough contenders among the 150 competitors – 20 Australians, 27 New Zealanders and 17 different countries represented, at the Cromwell Racecourse, all ages very competent with a pan. It was the first time NZ had ever hosted the event. Competitors were lined up with 16kg buckets of local gravel pre-spiked with gold flakes and set to it. They were judged on speed but if they lost a flake they were penalised, Megan says. “It’s all about how you use your tools and equipment, how competent you are with a pan and understanding the science of how gold, water and gravel work together. Competitors all enjoyed a grand dinner with some good Kiwi kai and kapa haka and even lined up to strut their stuff in the Alexandra Blossom Festival Parade. The event will be held in Finland next year, but the Ides are instead aiming their focus on hitting Dawson Creek, Canada, for the 2028 World Championships.

NHR Group brings the Lakes District’s first electric moving truck NHR has rolled into town, bringing a range of moving trucks and cargo vans suitable for individuals and business hire. Their fleet includes diesel vehicles and our district’s first electric moving truck – all complete with handy tail lifts. NHR are proudly Kiwi-owned and operated, opening their first branch in 1999. Focusing on commercial vehicle rental they have a network that runs from North Harbour, Auckland in the North Island to Christchurch and now Queenstown in the South Island. They’re operating out of the Ace Rentals site on Grant Road. “We’re really excited about opening in Queenstown,” Ana Tuala, National Rental Manager at NHR says. “We only had Christchurch in the South Island, so having our rental company working together with Ace Rentals on their site in Frankton is very new for us, and exciting. It’s an opportunity for us to work together in the community.” The electric Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter is the vehicle the team are most excited about – it’s fully electric with a range of 100km – 150km and doesn’t need to be recharged when returned – a great option with these rising diesel costs. It’s 21m³ and can hold

up to 1,500kg. If extra charging is required during the hire period, customers can take advantage of NHR’s charging partnership network. “Charging is included with the eCanter, so customers know exactly what they’re paying when they book. Whether it’s a business delivery or a family house move, our team is here to help choose the right size truck for the job. “They’re quiet, easy to drive on a car licence and there’s no refuelling at the end of the day. We’re proud to be offering locals in Queenstown and across the Lakes District their first electric truck for hire.” In fact, all of the vehicles can be driven on a standard car licence, making them very accessible. Every truck also has a tail lift, allowing one person to load heavy items such as fridges or washing machines into the truck on their own. “It does really help with the heavy lifting of things and just makes it easy for the customer or business to get around, out and about.” If you’re not certain what vehicle would be best suited to your needs, the team are there to help. When you get in touch they

will ask questions to evaluate your situation, and recommend the right vehicle for you. In addition to the eCanter there’s the 7m³ Toyota Hiace, which is great for site runs, stock collections and weekend jobs, the 12m³ Mitsubishi Canter, which is suitable for smaller moves or single large items, the LDV Deliver 9 Cargo Maxi, which works for trades and lighter loads, and their most popular option the Isuzu ELF at 17 to 19m³. Moving cross-country? One-way vehicle hire is also available on all diesel hires, too. NHR recently teamed up with Transfercar to facilitate these one-way trips and so far, they say it’s working really well. If available, you can take vehicles one way from Queenstown all the way up to Auckland. “I think it’s a great service for both the islands. It’s something that we’re really keen on and very excited about. You can find more information on the fleet and hire a vehicle at nhrgroup.co.nz or on 0800 110 110, where the team can help with choosing the right size. Vehicles are collected from 50 Grant Road, Frankton, and the introductory offer of 20% off on Queenstown hires is available until 17 November.

CRIMELINE by Sue Fea

20km/h past parked school buses

Search for Brazilian woman continues – Police seek man’s help Police are calling for help from the public to identify a man in his 30s of Asian complexion who may be of assistance in the extensive search for a 47-yearold Brazilian woman who’s been missing in the Skippers Saddle-Mount Dewar area for over two weeks. Sergeant Terry Wood says the man, who was of average to taller height, slim build with short dark hair and clean shaven, was seen on the summit track in the Mount Dewar area about 12.30pm on Friday afternoon, 18 September. He was possibly a tourist, and Police would like to speak with him regarding their ongoing investigation and search for Erika Rodrigues Coelho, a Brazilian national currently residing in Queenstown. Police were notified of her disappearance on Sunday, 20 September, after she’d not been seen or heard from for two days. Her Toyota RAV4 rental car was found at Skippers Saddle on Monday, 21 September. Land Search and Rescue volunteers, local and from around the lower South Island, including Te Anau, and Wānaka, have been assisting in the search and it’s understood the cold snap and snow at the weekend curtailed efforts with the search getting underway again last Thursday as snow began to melt. Coastguard Queenstown, drones and a helicopter have also been assisting. Police have acknowledged the efforts of the volunteers who, in some cases, have forgone employment opportunities and other signifcant commitments to help, while also being involved in other search and rescue operations during the past few weeks. The man seen in the Mount Dewar area on 18 September, or anyone else with information that could assist Police, has been asked to please get in touch through 105, either online (select ‘Update Report’) or by phone. Please reference number 260921/8173. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Lost visitor spends night in bush – Earnslaw Burn Meanwhile, four people based in Oamaru and visiting the Wakatipu sparked another search overnight on 23 and 24 September on the Earnslaw Burn track after a man in the party became separated, spending a night in the bush. Sergeant Blair Duffy says on their return to the vehicle one member of the party was left on the track. “The other three members of the group attempted to locate their friend, however, upon failing to do so they contacted Police,” Duffy says. A daytime search was initiated which failed to locate the missing tramper. Search teams found the man at about 12.10pm the following day on the track, approximately 2km from the carpark. He was treated for mild hypothermia having spent the night in the bush.

Aussie tourist faces assault charge A 35-year-old Australian tourist was arrested for allegedly assaulting a doorman at a local bar after being denied entry at 1.30am on Saturday, 26 September. Duffy says the man allegedly repeatedly attempted to gain entry after being initially refused due to intoxication. He then allegedly assaulted the doorman and was arrested for assault. The man was given a formal warning.

Police out in force for school holidays – Plan ahead Police are urging motorists to plan ahead and ensure their travel times reflect any potential delays heading into the second week of the school holidays, then Labour Weekend soon after. “From then on we see the holiday period start to ramp up as people begin to turn up in the region with their caravans and boats,” Otago Lakes Road Policing Manager Senior Sergeant Clint Wright says. “Be courteous and don’t take any unnecessary risks.” In the past week the Road Policing Team have been out in force for the school holidays and will continue to do so, with three blood alcohol level tests pending and a lower alcohol level result for a person on a zero-alcohol licence. Six others face court – two from Queenstown, and seven more were dealt with through infringement notices.

Where are the kids? Parents are being urged to be “mindful of your children’s whereabouts” by Police after troublesome school holiday antics have been on the rise in some local residential areas. Duffy says there’s been an uptake in “anti-social behaviour” reported in some local neighbourhoods, likely to be attributed to school-aged children. “There have been reports of water balloons being thrown at moving motor vehicles and this type of behaviour could have serious consequences,” he says. Police are urging parents to be aware where their children are at all times.

Back to school means more buses, more kids, and more reasons to slow down. If you see a stopped school bus, remember: either way, it’s 20k. The speed limit is 20 kilometres per hour when passing a stopped school bus in either direction. This term, drive with care and help make our roads safer for everyone.

COMMUNITY NOTES Can we fix it? Wastebusters and Sustainable Queenstown seek community input on reuse and repair forward to seeing how things have changed during that time,” says Wastebusters’ Communication Manager, Ruth Blunt.

We’ve come a long way in the Queenstown Lakes District. No one bats an eyelid when you offer up a reusable coffee cup in town and an increasing number of water stations have made reusable bottles the norm for locals and visitors alike. So, what’s next? This is what Wastebusters and Sustainable Queenstown (SQ) want to find out with Wastebusters’ fourth Resourceful Communities survey which is now live. Wastebusters leads the QLDC-backed programme across the district, joining forces with SQ to drive local action right here in Queenstown. “It’s been three years since we last ran a Resourceful Communities survey so we’re looking

“As a community-owned organisation, it’s so important for us to hear from our community and to hear how they would like Wasties and SQ to support them when it comes to reuse and repair.” Ruth points to SQ’s popular low waste living workshops, their calendar of repair events across the Whakatipu, and the slow fashion movement as direct outcomes of previous surveys. “The feedback we get from the survey really does make a difference. Our work’s at its most impactful when it’s supporting our community so it’s vital for us to know what’s working, what people would like more of and where there are still challenges that we can, hopefully, help people overcome.”

from Hangry As, and Chunky water bottles. The survey is open to everyone in the Queenstown Lakes District and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Scan the QR code for the survey. The Resourceful Communities survey is proudly supported by the QLDC Zero Waste District Programme.

The 2023 survey pointed to a positive upturn in reuse habits with more people choosing to use their own water bottle, coffee cup and BYO containers than in 2021. Everyone who completes the survey by 16 October will go in to win prize packs that include Skyline Gondola + Luge Rides, double sauna passes, a Kiwi Park double pass, sandwich vouchers

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

Dear diary… by Jessica Allen

In 1986 Wellington poet Kate Camp kept a diary for a year, the year she turned 14. In that year, her parents divorced, she had sex for the first time and learned to use a microfiche. She’s published Leather & Chains, which features over 100 of those diary entries with currentday commentary. She’ll be in town as part of Queenstown Writers Festival, dissecting the book. Camp first dusted off her old diary eight years ago when she read excerpts as part of LitCrawl Wellington’s Bad Diaries Salon. This is where writers are invited to read their old, bad teenage diaries, unedited. Surprisingly, she said she didn’t find it hard to read those entries in their raw form. “I actually quite like that rule because I think it’s very tempting to give a lot of explanation or just, kind of, apologise or cringe at your teenage writing, but in a way I think it’s more fun for the audience if they just encounter it – complete with all of its weirdness and its cringiness.” Camp’s readings were a huge success each year, described as hilarious, outrageous, dramatic and raw. No stranger to writing, she’s released many poetry books including How to be Happy Through Human and Makeshift Seasons. She also released a memoir in 2022, You Probably Think This Song is About You, so this book was a natural next step. “I wrote the book on my teenage diary, which is something I’ve managed to keep all these years,” Camp says. “I never kept a diary except that one year, so I thought it would be interesting to do some sort of project based on it. A couple of years ago I realised it was going to be 40 years since the diary was written, so I decided if I was

going to do something, I should publish it 40 years on.”

"Reading back on it now in my 50s, I’ve found a lot of joy in it and a lot of intense melodramatic energy. I actually really liked the girl that I encountered on the pages a lot more than I expected to." She's still surprised that she managed to keep a diary consistently for that “scatty” time of her life, and the process of writing the book made her realise that she might have more in common with that 14-year-old girl than she realised. Although she doesn’t remember thinking about wanting to be a writer at the time, she says reading back it does read as the diary of a wannabe writer. “I’m definitely experimenting with different types of pretentious literary styles in my writing,” she laughs. “There’s poems in there and poetic bits – I’m definitely trying out a lot of different writerly flourishes.” While Camp saw the book as really funny to read aloud, she also looked at it as being quite a sad document. She describes her teenage years as taking risks, getting into some not-so-great early sexual experimentation, trying drugs and her parents divorcing. Overall she describes it as a positive experience, looking back on her teenage self positively rather than with selfconsciousness and embarrassment.

“I’d always looked on it as a bit of a sad indictment of teenage risk taking, but actually reading back on it now in my 50s, I’ve found a lot of joy in it and a lot of intense melodramatic energy. I actually really liked the girl that I encountered on the pages a lot more than I expected to.” She’ll be interviewed by Debbie Jamieson, festival trustee and a mother to teenagers, who has described the talk as an excuse to indulge her passion for reading and enjoying the company of like-minded people. Jamieson will dive into the book and get answers to many questions, including why her entries are signed off ‘Leather & Chains’? “I’m really looking forward to it, and really looking forward to going to some of the other events while I’m down there – just hearing from the other writers. That’s always a really fun part of being in a festival,” Camp says. Kate Camp will be in conversation with Debbie Jamieson at Te Atamira on Sunday, 8 November at 4pm. She'll join fellow memoir-writer Charlotte Grimshaw as they discuss the joys and pitfalls of writing their own story. You can grab tickets and find more information at qtwritersfestival.nz/

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Hundreds of homes given fast-track green light near Wānaka - by RNZ

Photo: Supplied / Mt Iron Junction Housing Scheme A 250-home development has been granted fast-track approval near Wānaka. An application for the Mt Iron Junction Housing Scheme was lodged in February, including plans for a childcare centre and two recreational reserves on the Wānaka-Luggate Highway. Thirteen of the new homes have been earmarked for the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust for affordable housing. Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop said it would provide a range of housing to help meet significant demand in the area. “As well as providing much-needed additional housing, the project is predicted to contribute

measures appropriately reduce the risk to future residents and property and provide a suitable framework for ongoing management of that hazard.” Locals also flagged concerns about worsening traffic congestion at the roundabout of State Highway 6, State Highway 84, Riverbank Road and Junction Road. The NZ Transport Agency flagged that the development would consume available capacity of the roundabout and would bring forward the need for future improvements. The panel said the applicant volunteered a financial contribution to the agency towards the future costs, which the agency said it would be unable to receive. During the decision process, the government flagged it was considering changes to the development contributions system to enable councils to recover more costs from fast-tracked developments. But the panel said no commenter had raised any development contribution concerns, apart from the Transport Agency, so it did not consider the matter any further. The Mt Iron Junction Housing Scheme was the 35th project approved through the fast-track process.

$86 million to the local economy, supporting jobs both during construction and once the development is complete,” he said. “The panel also accepted the applicant’s proposal to limit visitor accommodation to 20 per cent of the development, with those properties able to be used for short-term stays for no more than 120 nights a year. “This will help ensure these are primarily homes for people to live in, rather than holiday accommodation.” The houses were expected to be built over 10 years across five stages. Locals had raised concerns about the wildfire risk in the area, including how close future residents might be to susceptible land, the ability to safely evacuate residents and the adequacy of firefighting water supply. In its decision, the fast-track panel acknowledged the concerns, but said it was satisfied the wildfire risk could be appropriately managed. That was possible through the combination of subdivision design, access arrangements, defensible space, vegetation management, firefighting water supply, emergency response planning and imposed conditions, the panel said. “While wildfire risk cannot be entirely eliminated, we are satisfied that the proposed mitigation

My Life story

by Sue Fea

FRANCIE PIACUN Superwoman in her 70s

Few people are representing their country in their chosen sport, let alone medalling multiple times, and still working fulltime at almost 80, but Queenstown’s Queen of Waka Ama Francie Piacun is definitely the exception.

Francie, 76, has had a decorated corporate career during her heyday, designing and producing top lines internationally for US company Levi Strauss, at one time even launching and designing her own jeans label. Her unique skill in bringing the best out of people was recognised early on by Levi’s American bosses who catapulted the young Kiwi to the top overseas and in Auckland by her mid20s giving her massive responsibilities. She got the results, also headhunted later by Wrangler and other big players overseas. By her late 40s in Australia, Francie caught the eye of Bonnie Rodwell who placed her in charge of her three Gold Coast stores. It was back here in NZ in 2006 and quite by chance while managing the Te Houtaewa Challenge ultra marathon, that Francie, then in her 50s, was introduced to Waka Ama and was immediately hooked. “I’d never done it before and I had to organise the Waka Ama Sports Challenge at the end of the race,” Francie says. Since 2008 she’s paddled for NZ teams and trained them in World Championships in Calgary, Australia, Tahiti, London, Hilo, Hawaii, Rio, and Singapore this year, medalling numerous times from the Golden Masters (60-plus) through to this year’s 75-Plus category winning bronze. Moving to Queenstown in 2014, she introduced Waka Ama to the Wakatipu, at first unable to compete internationally with no waka to train on. Born to a Croatian father, who sadly passed away when Francie was just 8, and her Māori English mother, Francie’s mum took the family to live with ‘Nana’ in the Far North in Ahipara with its very strong Māori population. Francie’s English Nana was the first white woman in Ahipara when she

married her grandfather, a Māori chief. The family moved to Auckland and Francie left school at 17 to work in a bank before moving to Australia. She was soon working in clothing retail and shop window design, working for a fabric manufacturer, then EL Riley casualwear as a production manager, quickly promoted. “Levis were coming to NZ and asked our general manager to set up Levis NZ.” The boss then invited Francie to do the merchandise and marketing. It was 1971 and she was 22. “A lot of the young surfers went to Norfolk Island to buy Levis then, and we made history,” Francie says. “We had five accounts and did over $1m on our first day’s sales, breaking the company record! It was huge.”

“For me it’s about working with young people.” Francie was sent to Adelaide and then back to Christchurch to show them “how to make jeans the Levis way”. The boss then trumped a job offer sending her to Japan to troubleshoot, after initially working in Hong Kong. “Levis gave us a large investment campaign budget, to market the label in Japan.” After five years there she was sent to head office in San Francisco. Unfortunately, Francie was in Hong Kong budget meetings when her mother tried to phone her in Japan to say her grandmother was dying. “Nobody spoke English and I didn’t get the message until my secretary passed it on on Monday.” Her Nana had passed the previous day. “But Levis flew me straight home that day.” Returning to NZ to live soon after, Francie, 31, scored a marketing job before being headhunted to set up Sasson Jeans in NZ. “Stirrup jeans

Francie with one of her special young Japanese friends, Emari, pictured in Japan in the late 1970s

were huge. We couldn’t make enough, then we launched the ‘baggy’.” In Australia selling the label to Sportsgirl, Francie scored a job with Wrangler, before becoming a consultant with big international clients like Trent Nathan, Myer, Simona and Just Jeans. “I designed and manufactured my own range – Scarpa - for Just Jeans, travelling to Germany, New York, Paris and LA Fashion Fairs to work with their buyers on styling direction.” From there she managed three stores and a departure level café at Brisbane International Airport, also joining local Bonnie Rodwell’s BONZ Clothing store on the Gold Coast. Her old Levis boss then invited her to develop and run a youth programme – ‘I Am Special’, mentoring students who’d fallen through the gaps. Now living back in the Far North, commuting from Kaitaia to work in Asia and in Auckland, Francie, so impressed by the amazing local Māori art, opened her own gallery there and in Kerikeri. Moving to Queenstown in 2014, she managed Art Bay Gallery for 10 years, then worked at BONZ, now the full-time manager of Romer Gallery. A former Far North Women’s Sportsperson of the Year, Francie has also coached the Wakatipu U19s and U16s to NZ Nationals victories, training on the lake from 7am, working eight hours then coaching most evenings, arriving home about 8.30pm. As if that’s not busy enough, Francie has just curated a wonderful new exhibition of emerging and established Māori artists – Tātai Manawa in the relocated old school hall at Country Lane. “It’s fantastic. The opening was packed. We’re featuring top NZ artists like Jimmy James Koratoras and Lissy and Rudi’s fabulous ‘Neon’ crochet work, and local Kai Tahu artist Liz Morrison.” Emerging artists are also invited to exhibit alongside established artists. “For me it’s about working with young people.”

Age is no barrier - Francie in action, powering through the water

QLDC Libraries Librarian Profile Kia Ora!

@qldclibraries

Lakes Weekly Bulletin and Queenstown Lakes Libraries are profiling our librarians. This month we are profiling Valerie Meyer, who works as a casual assistant at Queenstown and Frankton Libraries.

Queenstown Lakes District Libraries

I have a goal to write a children’s book, which my niece will illustrate. It’s an exciting little project bubbling away in the background. There’s no rush—when the time is right, it will bloom.

Kia Ora, I’m Valerie. I joined the Queenstown and Frankton Libraries in January 2026 as a casual assistant, following a career break after many years working as a consultant project manager in health, and more recently as a project manager in green space and infrastructure. I’m Southland born and bred, and have called Queenstown home for the past 19 years. I’ve always been drawn to books. When I was a nursing student, I worked part-time at Whitcoulls. I used to love arriving early for my shift, perusing the new books and getting in a sneaky read before I started work. At home, the lounge and office have walls of bookshelves—books on bookshelves, love it. I find it comforting. I’ve never been a Kindle girl. I love the real thing—the turning of the pages, the feel of a book in my hands, and the sense of a book becoming a companion as you travel through its pages. Whether it’s in my handbag, on the bedside table, or packed in a suitcase, books have always been part of my journey.

When I’m not in the book world, I’m usually travelling, submersed in nature, mountain biking, kayaking, running or walking, at the gym, gardening, working on projects around home, dabbling in interior design, or enjoying good times with friends. Busy, I should probably be tired—but I’m not! If I were asked to describe our libraries, I’d say they are welcoming, safe spaces where anyone can immerse themselves in books, play, work, conversation and community. Sounds like a great place to be.

Book Recommendations: The Women - Kristin Hannah The Women is a story of devastating loss and epic love. It is both an intimate portrait of a woman coming of age in a dangerous time and a story of a nation divided by war. It would be the journey of a lifetime… ’Women can be heroes, too’.

A Runners High - Dean Karnazes

Japandi Living - Laila Rietbergen A style that combines serene Scandinavian design elements with the rich Japanese design tradition. A combination of serenity and clean lines with a lot of attention for materials, textures and natural touches. According to authors Laila Rietbergen and Marlous Snijder, Japandi is more than just a decorating style. It is also a lifestyle that they want to share with their readers.

Ward D - Fiona McFadden Medical student Amy Brenner is spending the night on a locked psychiatric ward. Amy has been dreading her evening working on Ward D, the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. There are very specific reasons why she never wanted to do this required overnight rotation. Reasons nobody can ever find out. And as the hours tick by, Amy grows increasingly convinced something terrible is happening within these tightly secured walls. When patients and staff start to vanish without a trace, it becomes clear that everyone on the unit is in grave danger. Amy’s worst nightmare was spending the night on Ward D. And now she might never escape.

The Western States, infamous for its rugged terrain and extreme temperatures, becomes the most demanding competition of Dean Karnazes’ life, a physical and emotional reckoning and a battle to stay true to one’s purpose. Confronting his age, wearying body, career path and life choices, we see Karnazes as we never have before, raw and exposed. A Runner’s High is both an endorphinfuelled page-turner and a love letter to the sport from one of its most celebrated ambassadors.

Everything In Its Place - Oliver Sacks Everything in Its Place is a celebration of Sacks’s myriad interests, all told with his characteristic compassion, erudition, and luminous prose. From the celebrated case history of Spalding Gray that appeared in The New Yorker four months before his death to reflections on mental asylums; from piercing accounts of Schizophrenia to a reminiscence of Robin Williams; from the riveting tale of a medical colleague falling victim to Alzheimer’s to the cinematography of Michael Powell, this volume celebrates and reflects the wondrous curiosity of Oliver Sacks.
