The High Road True to the spirit of Queenstown there is always another opportunity knocking at the door. Most local established individuals and businesses are not particularly keen to disrupt the pecking order that is working for them now. Until a trigger threatens the status quo. Then it’s all on for pole position and ownership of the next big thing. Alternative transport options have been planned and consented, put on hold then half-heartedly started again with not much urgency. Until now. We are “suddenly” in a complete pickle. Now a gondola from Frankton to Queenstown, and another gondola from Frankton to Queenstown are gaining significant traction. Tourist attractions or real transport solutions? You be the judge. Whatever the case, the one that thrives will be a golden goose for the owners. The race is on. It’s no surprise then in the race for position, to see an old idea being floated again by none other than Skyline Enterprises. An alternative road to Frankton Road into Queenstown. Regardless of your conclusion that the new gondola proposals are legitimate transport options or simply tourist attractions, a tourist here for a week will be unlikely to spend time and money on more than one gondola ride. That gondola ride may very well happen before they even set eyes on the current number one tourism attraction in town, snaking up Bob’s Peak. Whatever the motivation from Skyline, to protect and enhance shareholder returns or help the community at large get from A to B, an alternative road into Queenstown needs to happen. The only way it is going to be built on time and on budget is by private enterprise. Who better than our locally owned Big End of Town. The big end of town, not just Skyline Enterprises but all our long time successful locally owned mega businesses, have the funds and the connections to put this alternative to Frankton Road back on the agenda and get it built. Privately funded transport is the only way we are getting out of this pickle. Council and NZTA have done less than the bare minimum for decades. And when they do attempt to build a road, it’s hugely disruptive, takes way too long, costs rate payers and taxpayers crippling amounts whether you use it or not. A smart organised cashed up business consortium will smash this challenging but achievable road out in no time, we won’t even know it’s happening until it’s finished, and we will only pay if we choose to use it. What’s the downside? I’ve got nothing against the gondola proposals. It’s just that a gondola strung across Queenstown Hill full of tourists looking into the backyards of residents below will not affect me and I won’t have a need to use it. Selfishly, I do not care one way or the other. Fill ya boots. Just hurry up and build us this High Road. Scott Stevens

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Search for missing plane in southern lake ends with no answers Police have finished searching a South Westland lake for a plane that disappeared almost 50 years ago with seven people on board, but say nothing was found that warranted further investigation. The aircraft - ZK-EBU - went missing in 1978 during a chartered scenic flight from Dunedin through Queenstown, Milford Sound and Preservation Inlet. Last contact with the plane was made while it was flying through Milford Sound. The seven people on board included pilot Edward Morrison and passengers David Hogg and Earl, Elizabeth, David, Alec and Rosemary Eliza Stuart. Navy, police and coastguard crews have scoured Lake Moeraki north of Haast for the past two days, following a possible sighting of the plane. Senior Sergeant Mark Kirkwood said sonar and divers were used to assess the lake bed, but nothing useful was found. He said the outcome was disappointing for families after a difficult and emotional few days.

“We know this search has carried great significance for the families of the seven people who disappeared nearly five decades ago.” Five members of the Stuart family of Dunedin were on the plane, and a spokesperson today said the family was grateful for the search. “The Stuart family at the search site would like to give our sincerest gratitude to Gavin Grimmer for all his continued effort in searching for our family. We would also like to thank the various agencies including New Zealand Police, the police national dive squad, the Royal New Zealand Navy and the coast guard whom dedicated their precious time and resources to the search, and for their empathetic and courteous approach towards us during this difficult time. “The outcome was obviously not what we wanted and it has brought up many raw emotions and memories but it has been a pleasure to be with family and share stories of those lost.”

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Te Pūaotanga: Contemporary Toi Māori Emerges into the Light in Tāhuna A significant new exhibition of contemporary toi Māori opened at Tātai Manawa on Thursday, 24 September.

In a town recognised around the world for its landscape and visitor experiences, a new exhibition is bringing Māori creativity, whakapapa and contemporary identity to the centre of the cultural conversation. Te Pūaotanga, curated by Frances Piacun, opens at Tātai Manawa in Frankton on Thursday, 24 September. Bringing together established and emerging Māori artists from across the motu, the

exhibition marks an important moment for toi Māori in Tāhuna. It creates a place where whānau Māori can host the wider community and where Māori stories, creative practices and aspirations can be encountered in ways that are grounded in te ao Māori. Te Pūaotanga speaks to emergence, awakening and the first light of a new day. It is a fitting name for the inaugural toi Māori exhibition at Tātai Manawa and for what is beginning to take shape within the space. Curator Frances Piacun, working alongside Tātai Manawa’s Creative Director Pearl Sidwell and Cultural Advisor Emily Chirnside, has shaped Te Pūaotanga around whakapapa, artist narratives and the connections created between the works. Visitors will encounter mahi toi in relationship with one another, creating a deeper connection to the artists and the kaupapa they carry. For Piacun, this approach is fundamental to presenting Māori art through a Māori curatorial lens. “Te Pūaotanga allows whakapapa and narrative to guide how Māori artwork is encountered. The relationships between the artists, their practices

and the kaupapa carried through the works shape the experience of the exhibition.” “Each artist brings their own voice, identity and creative practice. Their works also speak to one another, creating a larger story about who we are, where we come from and the relationships that sustain us.” The exhibition holds particular significance in Tāhuna, where Māori artists and whānau have limited dedicated spaces in which to gather, create, exhibit and determine how their stories are shared. Grounded in te ao Māori and shaped by Whānau Māori o Tāhuna, Tātai Manawa opened in June as a place to gather, create and connect. It has since become a home for toi, reo Māori, mātauraka, hauora, storytelling, community kōrero and whānau-led kaupapa. Te Pūaotanga offers the clearest expression yet of what the space could make possible. The exhibition runs until Friday, 23 October, at Assembly Room, Old School House, Country Lane, 26 Hansen Road. Opening hours are 10am - 3pm and more information can be found at facebook.com/Tataimanawaexhibitions

CRIMELINE by Sue Fea

Skippers Road - Search for missing woman Efforts are ongoing as searches continue for missing 47-year-old Erika Rodrigues Coelho near Queenstown with a large volunteer search team having already spent hundreds of hours scouring the area around Skippers Saddle where her rental car was found. Otago Lakes Central Area Prevention Manager, Senior Sergeant John Fookes says Erika is a Brazilian national currently residing in Queenstown and Police were made aware of her disappearance on Sunday, 20 September, after she had not been seen or heard from since Friday 18 September. A Search and Rescue operation was launched with the assistance from Land Search and Rescue volunteers, Coastguard Queenstown, drones, and a helicopter. On Monday 21 September, Erika’s rental vehicle – a white Toyota RAV4 with a black roof, registration RKM122 – was found at Skippers Saddle near Coronet Peak. It has been established that the car was parked there sometime during the afternoon or evening of Friday 18 September. Coastguard Queenstown’s underwater drone has been used by one of their volunteers to search a mountain tarn (pond) near Skippers Saddle, Fookes says. “Land Search and Rescue volunteers have spent hundreds of hours searching the Shotover, Devil’s Creek, and other nearby catchments, as well as points of interest and routes that could have been taken by Erika from where the vehicle was left. “Police would like to acknowledge the efforts of the volunteers who, in some cases, have forgone employment opportunities and other significant commitments. They have also been involved in other search and rescue operations during this period. Sadly, Erika has not been found.” Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. “We want to stress that even the smallest amount of information can make a huge difference to our investigation and finding Erika.” If you have seen Erika since Friday 18 September, or saw the white Toyota RAV4 on that Friday or the days leading up to it, please contact 105 – either over the phone or online. Any sightings of her in the moment should be reported by calling 111 immediately. Please use reference number 260921/8173. Should anyone want to provide information anonymously, you can do so through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

Battling the big ones – Queenstown firefighter returns by Sue Fea

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Work begins on Wānaka Airport Master Plan

Bobby, right, with Dunstan Brigade deputy Tony Smith at one of their campsites during the US wildfires

A Queenstown firefighting legend has recently returned from the US where he had his work cut out for him helping manage and coordinate four different helicopter bases – two in Oregon and two in Washington, in the massive battles there against wildfires. It wasn’t Fenz Otago assistant district commander Bobby Lamont’s first time volunteering to help in the battle against big fires overseas, but this time the veteran of local firefighting, who’s clocked 26 years here as a volunteer, brought valuable helicopter experience from Queenstown. Part of an initial five-strong Kiwi contingent and 69 Australians sent to give American firefighters some reprieve in August, Lamont was overseeing logistics on the ground and directing multiple aircraft and helicopters in the air at one time, posted there for six weeks. “We’d dispatch them from our base giving them critical coordinates,” he says. “Sometimes our air attack supervisor would be in the air at 8000ft (2438.4m) flying around coordinating the aircraft movements safely. At my last base I worked in Washington we had 10 helicopters assigned to one incident, heavier aircraft like massive three-engined Chinooks that can lift 5-tonne of water, and Black Hawkes.” The helicopter base teams are responsible for managing who goes up and what their hours are with strict flying hour limits. “If they go over that limit in a 24-hour period they have to be stood down. It can be quite a juggling act,” he says. “The smoke was a real problem.” Lamont says communication was vital and the smoke at times was horrendous. During one hair-raising situation the pilot they were directing lost communications. They went out after Bobby and the team had a request to send that aircraft to a particular part of a massive fire. “We started losing contact and he was trying to talk to the crews on the ground and struggling to see where they were in the thick smoke. That wasn’t a nice feeling,” Lamont says. “He did the right thing and pulled out.” In Oregon he and the team were juggling four fires out of one base. “Everyone was maxing out. They’re flying between 6, 7, and 8 hours.” While some fires are deliberately lit, the fires where Lamont’s bases were, were all started by dry lightning. “That was really scary. About 50% of the fires in the US and North America start that way,” he says. “A rolling storm came through with thunder, heaps of wind and no rain and masses of lightning. We had 150 strikes over three hours. That started about another 22 small fire strikes. The next day it poured with rain and they had flash flooding.”

Work to develop a Master Plan for Wānaka Airport is underway, with specialist advisors appointed to support Queenstown Lakes District Council’s project team. The Master Plan builds on the independent Future Review of Wānaka Airport completed in 2025, which attracted more than 1,100 submissions and extensive community engagement. Following consideration of community feedback and supporting technical and economic analysis, Council adopted Scenario 3 at its May 2026 meeting as the future strategic direction for Wānaka Airport and the basis for development of the Master Plan. The Wānaka Airport Liaison Committee (WALC) has begun its role as the programme’s community reference group, providing feedback on emerging issues, opportunities and draft outputs as the Master Plan develops. Council recently approved changes to WALC’s membership and Terms of Reference to support this role, including the appointment of Councillor Cody Tucker and an independent technical expert with airport operations and master planning experience. Aviation consultants Egis will continue to provide specialist advice throughout the planning process, ensuring continuity between the Future Review, Council’s adopted direction and preparation of the Master Plan. QLDC Programme Director, Special Projects, Paul Speedy says the WALC Steering Group meetings will support the development of the Master Plan. “WALC’s role as the programme’s community reference group is to bring community perspectives into development of the Master Plan. These informal working sessions will allow members to test ideas, ask questions and provide feedback before recommendations are presented to Council through the formal decision-making process.” WALC will not make decisions on the Master Plan. Formal decisions remain with the full Council and will continue to be made in public through the usual Council process and public consultation. “The wider community will have an opportunity to have its say,” says Mr Speedy. “Once a draft Master Plan is ready, Council will be asked to approve it for public consultation before making any decisions on a final plan.” What happens next: Technical investigations and targeted engagement with aviation operators and other interested parties will continue as the Master Plan is developed. Elected members will be engaged as the work progresses before a draft Master Plan is prepared. The draft Master Plan is expected to be presented to Council in 2027. If approved for consultation, the wider community will have an opportunity to provide feedback before Council considers adoption of a final Master Plan.

Initial attack crews are constantly on standby, including huge numbers of personnel, mostly firefighters. “We had 1600 in our Little Giant fire area in Washington, mostly firefighters, plus incident management teams and aviation crews.” Smokejumpers were also assigned to their base there. “The mobilisation of resources there is very impressive,” Lamont says. Five other firefighters from Otago and Southland worked at the base with Lamont, including Dunstan Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy Tony Smith. “It was an amazing experience, and I was very privileged to go and help,” Lamont says.

COMMUNITY NOTES At The World’s Edge In Schools Combining community, creativity and curated compositions, At The World’s Edge (AWE) will once again tour the Central Lakes region, performing for over 2,000 students at multiple early childhood centres, primary schools and high schools. After the official programme ends, artists will head to schools from 12 – 16 October.

Jo Mills at the festival explains that the Schools Programme is an integral part of the overall festival. It serves as a seed for the broader pathways programme, which includes emerging artists. “It’s a two-way thing – it’s taking these incredible musicians out into the community, because let’s face it, it’s not every day you get these incredible artists who are going to be playing at schools in Central Otago. The artists also love it because for them, they were young artists when it started off, and the world of arts is quite a challenging world at the moment, but it’s also a wonderful world,” Mills says. The programme aims to create a sense of wonder, generating excitement and curiosity, especially for those that might not otherwise be exposed

Festival Director Justine Cormack always looks forward to witnessing the artists engaging with children around the district. The ensemble for the schools is made up of a few of the artists as well as the emerging artists and emerging composer, who perform for around 2,000 students in total. “We’ve got these amazing young musicians and this new composition by a young composer, and they’re not that much older than some of the kids they’re playing for, in high schools. There’s a lovely connection that these younger musicians have with these school groups as well,” Cormack says.

to classical music. A couple of years ago Ben Goldscheider, a French horn player from the UK toured around and Mills says it was very well received, with many not having heard that before. “Having those moments, those in-person engagements, rather than seeing it on Youtube, that’s what AWE is all about. It’s understanding the power of music and the arts in person, rather than just looking at it through a screen,” Mills says. At The World’s Edge Schools Programme will take place at various schools in our region between 12 – 16 October. It’s free to schools and students with the support of many of their generous funders. If you’re interested but not a school pupil, the festival are offering many free performances open to the public including the AWE Scholars Showcase on 5 October, the Emerging Artist Showcase on 9 October, and the Open Rehearsals on Wednesday, 7 October, at Te Atamira. Genre-bending sounds by Jessica Allen

Alternative-folk artist Reb Fountain will play at Yonder in October as part of her nation-wide tour. The tour is in support of her latest album, Water for Gasoline, which stays true to her genre-defining sound – smooth and captivating.

album was recorded in a week and released three months later, it “stands as a message of hope, resilience and the fight for love.” It’s been described as Fountain at her most assured and confident – an album for now.

The album is Fountain’s second in two years, with How Love Bends released in 2025. Her previous two albums before that were released during Covid lockdowns, so she’s enjoying being able to bring her music into the ‘normal’ world.

"I’m so excited to be making music, to be playing music to everyone."

“This is amazing – to be releasing a record where we can go and talk to folks in person, it’s been quite a highlight, to be honest. I’m so excited to be making music, to be playing music to everyone,” Fountain says. While How Love Bends was born at a time when Fountain was recovering from a serious head injury, Water for Gasoline confronts the challenges of our times while searching for light, beauty and connection amongst the noise. The

“This album really came about wanting to make something that was really unapologetic and clear and open to all aspects of myself as well as what was going on in the world.” The same artistic instinct and collective spirit that shapes Water for Gasoline has long defined Fountain’s live performances, with her live band taking her recordings to the next level.

In celebration of her new work, she brings an enhanced band line up to audiences, featuring Dianne Swann and James Duncan alongside bandmates Dave Khan & Earl Robertson. “It’s just so heartening to connect with people and play these new songs. It’s pretty exciting – I was like a kid in a candy store the first night – live performance is my favourite thing to do and so it’s really nice to get out and play these songs. They feel really good and we’re having a good time,” Fountain says. Supporting Fountain is Young Moon the moniker of Los Angeles born, Nelson-based Trevor Montgomery. Reb Fountain’s Water for Gasoline Album Tour will take over Yonder on Sunday, 11 October from 7.30pm. Why Slowing Down Heals Burnout Faster Than Pushing Harder by Katherine Froggatt

One of the things that surprises people most about burnout recovery is how long it actually takes. Weeks, sometimes months, after someone finally admits they need to slow down, their body still won’t settle. They rest, and nothing changes. They assume something is wrong with them and they believe nothing will work no matter how hard they try.

want to release it. But for a body already running on stress hormones, high intensity exercise can add another layer of physiological demand rather than relieve one. Some days, the more useful thing is genuinely gentle. A walk. Yoga. Pilates. Anything that tells your body it is safe to shift out of fight or flight and into rest and digest.

Nothing is wrong with them. Their nervous system is still doing exactly what it was trained to do.

For someone used to achieving and pushing, slowing down can feel like failure. Start small. One or two days a week, five to ten minutes of doing absolutely nothing productive. No expectations, just be. Build from there. If stillness feels unbearable at first, an active form of rest can be the bridge. Something creative with your hands, art, cooking, making something for someone you love, gives the nervous system a task without the demand of performance.

I see this constantly in clients who work in high stress environments, often in roles built around being of service to other people. Nursing, teaching, hospitality, caregiving, leadership. They come home and their body is still in emergency response, even though the emergency ended hours ago. Switching off is not a mindset problem. It is a physiology problem. The amygdala, the brain’s smoke detector, does not clock out at five o’clock. When it has spent months or years scanning for the next demand, it stays hypervigilant long after the demand has passed. This is the part most burnout advice misses. It treats recovery as a mindset shift, a better morning routine, a meditation app. Meditation helps some people enormously. But if the stress response itself has not been disrupted, mindfulness alone is working against a nervous system that is still braced for impact. Here is the part that surprises high performers most. A hard workout is not always the answer. I understand the instinct. You feel wound up, so you

What you eat matters here too. Caffeine feels like the obvious support when you are exhausted, but it keeps your body stimulated for far longer than it needs to be when what it is actually asking for is rest. Burnout recovery is not about trying harder. It is about giving your body permission to stand down without the guilt attached. If you recognise yourself in any of this, a free 30-minute Clarity Call is a good place to start. Book at breastwise.co.nz/clarity-call

Greenstone Entertainment is thrilled to announce their 2027 artist line-up, featuring international artists Seal, Bastille, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Level 42. The tour will once again take over Wānaka’s Three Parks Outdoor Arena on Saturday, 30 January. The Greenstone Members 48-hour official pre-sale begins Tuesday, 29 September at 11am. There’s also a special local’s instore sale at Queenstown’s isite Visitor Information Centre and Wānaka isite Visitor Centre. General public tickets will go on sale on Thursday, 1 October at 12pm. Amanda Calvert, Greenstone Entertainment CEO said; “We’re overjoyed to welcome to New Zealand, for the very first time, none other than GRAMMY® award winning, 90’s music superstar Seal who celebrates his 30+ year milestone in the industry. British Indie-pop band Bastille who’s hits ‘Pompeii’ and ‘Happier’ have garnered over 2 billion views on Spotify return to New Zealand following their 2020 headline show at Spark Arena in Auckland. Plus, fans are in for another treat as Sophie Ellis-Bextor makes a highly anticipated return on the heels of her triumphant shows earlier this year. Finally, we are eager to extend some Kiwi hospitality to 80’s chart toppers Level 42 who bring their signature jazz-funk pop fusion to our shores for their inaugural tour. Ms Calvert added “Every year we embark on an extensive search to secure the best international acts for the Summer Concert tour; with our 2027 line-up we think we’ve achieved the perfect balance of artist’s and musical genres – it’s going to be an exceptional tour.’

My Life story

DEREK BULMAN An eye for opportunity

One of Southand’s leading wool auctioneers and classers by his early 20s, it was that keen eye for an entrepreneurial opportunity that would initially land Derek Bulman, 85 next month, in Queenstown. While far less sophisticated, even in the early 1960s, Queenstown was a desirable ski party town, Derek, then girlfriend Marg, and friends spending weekends here skiing. “We’d drink after hours at Eichardt’s, the White Star, O’Connell’s and Hotel Esplanade. It was great fun.” Marg and a friend had opened a ritzy hair salon in what was then the one-way Ballarat Street, now the Mall.

He first noticed Marg on her return from working in London. “It was the mid-60s, the ‘Twiggy’ days and she was very mod and stood out,” he says. “The local press got hold of it and took a photo of this gorgeous local blonde girl back from London in her white leather boots, mini skirt and raincoat. I thought, ‘Gee! What a bombshell!” Derek grins. Marg’s parents came to visit Derek’s ailing dad, Marg coming too. “I thought, ‘Wow’, and I needed a partner for the Mercantile Ball. I thought all my Christmases had come at once!” By now a highly skilled wool classer and auctioneer for Wright Stephenson in Invercargill, fresh from two years studying wool at Massey University, Derek commuted to Queenstown at weekends while they dated. Trevor Gamble was a mate and a master brick layer, who did impressive stonework and fireplaces. “In 1966 he invited me to join him in Wakatipu Stone Distributors.” “We’d bring a team of guys up from Invercargill to chip big slabs of stone and bag it,” Derek says. They’d then move it to Invercargill by rail from Kingston. Soon after, they answered a franchise ad for Rylock Aluminum, American newcomers to New Zealand. “They were all wooden window frames then. All the big timers wanted the franchise and

when Trevor and I applied – he left school at 14, me at 15 - the big boss said, ‘Doesn’t any bugger down here get educated’, but we must’ve charmed him, Derek grins. “He took a punt on us which upset the big Invercargill players. I met one collecting my PO Box mail and he said, ‘What a fool you are boy, thinking you can make that work. I will run you out of town in two years.’ That was the only incentive I needed to succeed.” Derek and Marg married in 1967. In 1969 Trevor bought Shotover Jet and Derek went solo. The next year Derek scored a huge contract with a company building a big motel block in Queenstown.

“We’d bring a team of guys up from Invercargill to chip big slabs of stone and bag it.” “By 1969 we’d put all the windows and doors in it and a mate called to say there was going to be an announcement and to watch the 6 o’clock news! We didn’t wait, racing to Queenstown with some mates in the truck with the trailer, working through the night taking out all the windows and doors,” Derek says. “The next morning when we were driving out the site was cordoned off with security guards.” The framing was stored for several years when they struck a deal with the new owner’s builder to put it back in. “You’d go to jail for that today,” Derek chuckles. Derek operated Rylock Southland in Invercargill and Queenstown, also breaking into Dunedin, with a Lockstone franchise added in.

Yachting has been a huge part of Derek’s life – a Frankton holiday cribbie since 1972. Derek, mate Peter Adam and their sons clocked some big successes, including a handicap win in the Donald Hay Race. “Those Brown brothers taught us a lot about racing.” A Queenstown Rotarian for 31 years until last year, Derek was Invercargill Rotary president in 1990 and Rotary District Governor in 1995, instrumental in establishing a highly popular programme – ‘Give Kids A Chance’ - to help support and upskill single parents of disruptive and troubled kids. A Life Member of the Invercargill Squash Racquets Club, Derek was a top seed Southland player in his heyday, winning multiple Invercargill Club championships and a National Masters title in the 1980s. He’s served on the national executive and was an original founder of the Southland Squash Racquets Association. Derek was Invercargill president and instrumental in introducing new glass wall courts in the late 1970s – a big first for NZ, catapulting Southland squash to the fore. “We imported glass-backed walls, building four new state-of-the-art courts by raising debentures with our 100 members using voluntary labour. It took 18 months and membership numbers had skyrocketed to 900, attracting national championships and the likes of Ross Norman and Susan Devoy. In 1991 with daughters Jo and Kate strong netballers Derek managed to lure Silver Ferns captain Sandra Edge south to play for the Sting, putting Southland netball on the map. When Derek and Marg moved to Queenstown in 1995 he got hooked on multisport, competing individually and in Coast to Coast teams from age 58.

He and Marg also built and ran seven pole housestyle motels – Beech Cove, along Frankton Road.

He’s also completed nine Mototapus and while injury has put paid to multisport, Derek, turning 85 next month, is still out on his bike daily. “I value fitness.”
