Less is Best Yet another one of the current government’s grand plans is a major shake-up of the public sector. Few Kiwis will disagree our current system is far from perfect. The slashing of inefficiency in the local government space is long overdue. The proposal in basic terms, is ditching regional councils and encourage/ force district councils to amalgamate. On the first proposal. Go for gold and throw the Otago Regional Council into the Port of Dunedin. They are the historical Rabbit Board, who couldn’t control rabbits and a gold mining era Water Board who couldn’t control water. They have not improved the efficiency of their core services. Goodbye, they should never have existed in the first place. Now the interesting bit, amalgamation of district councils and the reallocation of regional council assets and responsibilities. District councils across the Otago region have been debating and voting on their preferred outcomes. Predictably unity across the region is non-existent. To put it mildly, it’s a shitshow of discourse. Why are we not surprised? Look at the history behind Queenstown Lakes District Council. The QLDC did amalgamate back in 1987 when Queenstown and Wānaka said, “I do” and lived happily ever after. Or did they? Then in 1989 Arrowtown joined to make it a threesome. If ever the saying “three’s a crowd” rung true, here is the proof. Queenstown thinks it is very important and the rest of New Zealand could not survive without its very important contributions to, well, everything. Wānaka is turning into a less important version of Queenstown, and they hate that. Arrowtown gets told to shut up, you are not important or special so stop taking the limelight off the much more important bedfellows, Queenstown and Wānaka. It’s not working, QLDC, let’s get a divorce. It’s madness to think this three-way marriage, that doesn’t work now, will get better by adding a fourth, fifth or sixth to the bed. What efficiency will come by adding Cromwell, Alexandra and the rest of Central Otago? Or God forbid the train wreak that is Dunedin City Council. If you think QLDC is bad, look at Dunedin. They take dysfunction to a whole new level. If the consequences of partnering up with them was not so serious, it would be primetime comedy gold. Benedict Ong and Lee Vandervis would be in line for Emmy Awards, for outstanding performances in an irreverent comedy show. It’s crazy to think a marriage with destructive delusional negative strangers will have a constructive positive happy outcome. I agree with the Government on one thing, the current system is not working for the people who pay the bills. But let’s not make it worse by creating a super-sized orgy of inefficiency and dysfunction. Give our unique townships back the right to self-determination. Less is best. Scott Stevens

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Christopher Luxon announces National’s alternative to introducing bed tax The National Party has announced its alternative to introducing the bed tax. It would instead distribute money to all councils by resetting how the International Visitor Levy is allocated. Christopher Luxon, Louise Upston and Nicola Willis announced the campaign pledge in Auckland - the country’s biggest city where its mayor Wayne Brown has been highly critical of the bed tax backtrack. National’s finance spokesperson Nicola Willis says from July next year it would put $100 million into the Department of Conservation (DOC), $50m into supporting tourism growth and resilience, and the rest would go to councils based on the share of tourists they have. In the first year it’s estimated Auckland would receive $19.1m and Queenstown Lakes would be eligible for $17.1m. Other councils would receive funding according to their share of international visitor guest nights. “Under National’s policy, every territorial authority that hosts international visitors will receive a share of IVL funding, so they can support responsible growth in tourism in their community.
“Funding would begin flowing to councils from 1 July 2027, around two years earlier than it would with a bed tax,” Willis said. National is also making clear it wouldn’t increase the visitor levy for at least the next three years, which it says provides certainty to the tourism industry, she said. With some of the levy redistributed, DOC will be short on funding over the four-year forecast period, which means the Government will be required to top it up through the operating allowance in next year’s Budget. In 2018 when the levy was first proposed under a Labour-led government, National campaigned strongly against it with then-leader Simon Bridges claiming it was “entirely unnecessary” and “just another tax”. After winning power in 2023, the following year the coalition Government nearly tripled the $35 fee to $100. Tourism spokesperson Louise Upston said a bed tax would “disproportionately impact New Zealanders booking a weekend away, whether that’s for a sports event, a family funeral or to visit friends.” “This is a clear, practical alternative to that,” she said.
Mental Health Awareness Week 20206: theme of belonging announced The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand (MHF) has announced the details for Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, running nationwide from 12 - 18 October. This year’s theme, Belonging Matters, invites schools, workplaces, and communities across Aotearoa to focus on small, everyday moments of connection that foster a genuine sense of inclusion and boost mental wellbeing. Grounded in the whakataukī Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au - I am you, and you are me, the 2026 theme comes at a crucial time. Recent research highlights a growing challenge across Aotearoa of rising loneliness1, declining trust2 and only 53% of New Zealanders feeling that their neighbourhood has a strong sense of community3. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week champions a simple truth: nurturing a sense of belonging is one of the most powerful protective factors for our mental health. “Humans are social beings and being able to spend time with one another, connect and feel that we belong, is vital for our mental and emotional health.
Connection works at many levels, whānau, friends, workplaces, schools, community, country. It is a two-way street, we need to reach out and we need to invite people in. This all builds connectedness, belonging, trust and wellbeing,” says Shaun Robinson, Chief Executive of the MHF. Whether at school, work, or in local neighbourhoods, finding small ways to connect can make a world of difference. Qantas engine fire – Are we ready? by Sue Fea

While there was widespread alarm both on the ground and on board as significant flames leapt from the engine of a Qantas jet upon take-off from Queenstown last Saturday (5 September), Qantas assures its pilots had everything under control. The Sydney-bound plane diverted to Christchurch and landed safely, the flames soon extinguished, and a Qantas spokesperson says the pilot had only called for a ‘priority landing’ not an ‘emergency landing’. However, had an emergency landing been required, Queenstown Airport’s 22-strong, highly trained and well-equipped Airport Emergency Services crew are well-equipped in aviation rescue and firefighting with state-of-the-art technology, and always at the ready, Queenstown Airport Chief of Aviation and Customer Todd Grace says. A full crew is rostered on over three watches. Grace says the airport is “fully compliant” with all international requirements and takes emergency preparedness “very seriously” and is well-prepared to respond effectively. The airport’s Emergency Services personnel also carry out important safety checks, including regular runway inspections, and act as first responders to medical incidents at the airport. “They also help manage wildlife and play a key role in emergency planning and exercises.” Outside of work many of them also serve the community as volunteer firefighters in local brigades. Grace says Queenstown Airport also regularly reviews and updates its Aerodrome Emergency Plan with staff receiving coordinated incident management system (CIMS) training and undergoing regular desktop exercises and simulated emergencies. Grace says the 5 September Qantas diversion to Christchurch decision was made by the flight crew following a suspected engine issue. “Qantas has engineering and ground support in place in Christchurch. The aircraft did not make an emergency landing.” Meanwhile, a Qantas spokesperson says Qantas engineers flew into Christchurch to inspect the plane on Sunday (6 September) after what it had termed as “a suspected engine issue”. Just what that was had not been established late last week. “The aircraft did not make an emergency landing. The crew requested priority handling on arrival in Christchurch as a precaution, which is standard practice when pilots wish to have access to additional support services,” an airline spokesperson says, while conceding it was a distressing experience for passengers. Aviation sources say Invercargill and Christchurch have longer runways not surrounded by mountains and with the plane fully laden with fuel the pilot and crew would’ve elected to divert to Christchurch where there were good resources on the ground. While Qantas still hasn’t released the findings of its investigations, a Queenstown Airport spokesperson says there was no evidence of a bird strike on the runway. The following day (Sunday, 6 September) a Qantas flight from Sydney to Queenstown returned to Sydney after a flight deck alert indicated a potential issue with the aircraft’s skid system, the spokesperson says. The aircraft landed safely back in Sydney.

Wakatipu Anglers Club Learn to Fly Fish Day
Apple Grafting Workshop
The Wakatipu Anglers Club is based in Queenstown and meets on a regular basis. Established in 1986, the membership boasts some of Queenstown’s most recognised fly-fishing enthusiasts and welcomes all anglers to enjoy sociable club nights, trout chasing expeditions and a shared passion for the outdoors.
Ben Elms will be conducting a hands-on apple grafting demonstration on Saturday, 19 September. Come along to this apple grafting workshop at the Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens on Gorge road. You will graft two apple trees on the day to take home with you, with the option to buy more rootstock to graft more apples. On the day we will have 14 different heritage apples to choose from. Ranging from Cox’s Orange to Keswick Codling to Gravenstein. Lots of tasty apple varieties to choose from. It’s easy to do, you don’t need to know anything. So come along and learn the not so dark art of apple Grafting. Pictured are two trees that were grafted at Ben’s last workshop he held back in 2020 that started fruiting after three years. Grafting is a great way of growing apple trees cheaply and preserving old heritage apple varieties, many of which aren’t available to buy commercially. The workshop will run from 10am - 12pm. There’s a workshop at Queenstown Harvest Community Gardens on Saturday, 19 September, and a workshop at Hāwea Food Forest on Saturday, 12 September.

Plus you’ll go in the draw for fishing equipment. The day provides the public an opportunity to be mentored by some of the regions top anglers. The course will be at QLDC Events Centre from 9am. Ten taken to hospital - Crown Range Summit head on Ten people were taken to Lakes District Hospital by St John Ambulance crews, at least one with moderate injuries, after what is believed to have been a head-on collision between two vehicles near the summit on Crown Range Road at around 3.30pm Wednesday, 9 September. Four ambulances rushed to the scene as well as volunteers from Arrowtown and Frankton Fire Brigades who assisted with patient care and traffic management, FENZ Otago Lakes Group assistant commander Nic McQuillan says. A St John spokesperson says crews treated all 10 patients at the scene for injuries ranging from moderate to minor, before transporting them all to hospital. Emergency services were still at the scene late Wednesday, 9 September. It’s believed there’s been another minor crash in the vicinity within the past week, and in July a person died in a fatal car-bush crash on the Crown Range Road a few kilometres south (Queenstown side) of Cardrona Village.
Would-be Banksy graffiti artist dobbed in Prompt action from a member of the public helped Police net an alleged young graffiti artist at work spray painting under the Lower Shotover Bridge just after 5.30pm on Tuesday, 8 September. Shute says an off-duty officer had been in the area at the time, and a young person has been referred to Police Youth Aid. A Facebook community post from a concerned nearby resident alerted parents that a teenage boy in a black hoody and black trousers with a can of blue spray paint had allegedly run away very slowly uphill when confronted. “Maybe have a word about leaving the street art to Banksy and his poor drawing skills to his parents’ fridge,” the post says.
Tow the line Police intervened after a man allegedly became aggressive and yelled at a line of people queuing outside a local bar on Camp Street, then became racially abusive to Police when asked to move on just before 10pm on Sunday, 6 September. Constable Amanda Shute says the man had been seen being pushed back by the line of people and when approached by officers he’d allegedly continued his aggression, yelling at the line, allegedly becoming racially abusive to Police. He was arrested for disorderly behaviour after again refusing to leave the area and a formal written warning was issued.
More aggression Two men were also arrested for disorderly behaviour after allegedly having to be restrained by security officers for trying to fight staff in a Mall bar shortly before 10pm on Saturday, 5 August, Shute says. The men had been removed from the bar and allegedly continued to be physically aggressive towards security. They were released by Police with a formal written warning.
Hostel staff member allegedly assaulted A man, who allegedly punched a staff member in the face at a local backpackers’ hostel, has been charged with assault and resisting Police. Shute says an intoxicated man had allegedly entered the reception area just before 1.30am last Thursday, 3 September, becoming verbally abusive to a staff member. She says he then allegedly punched the staff member in the face and left, later located down the road by Police arguing with another person. “When arrested the man has resisted Police applying handcuffs and tried to run away.”

Drink driving A 36-year-old local man has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol third or subsequent, after allegedly blowing 502mcg when stopped by Police on Kawarau Road on Thursday, 3 September. Shute says the driver had been stopped by Police after a vehicle was allegedly observed doing a U-turn prior to a checkpoint soon before 9pm. Another driver stopped at the checkpoint allegedly blew 592mcg just prior at 8.45pm and was charged.
Rescue helicopter kept busy airlifting ski area patients The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter was kept busy early this week responding to two callouts to Treble Cone Ski Area – one just after 1pm on Tuesday, 8 September, to airlift a patient with moderate injuries to Dunedin Hospital, the other just before 11am the previous day, a St John Ambulance spokesperson says. That patient was also airlifted to Dunedin with moderate injuries. St John also transported a patient in a moderate condition from Cardrona Ski Area to Dunstan Hospital by road after two ambulances responded to a callout there mid-afternoon on Monday, 7 September. A patient was also treated and transported to Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries after an accident at Remarkables Ski Area, just before 4pm on Monday, 7 September.

Magnificent music and mountains collide by Jessica Allen
At the World’s Edge Festival kicked will return on 3 October. It delivers an extensive programme of chamber music, spanning across Queenstown, Bannockburn, Wānaka and Cromwell. Taking place against the spectacular backdrops of our region, the best chamber music in Aotearoa will be performed. Nature is the muse of the festival and each of the intimate shows. the extensive programme includes something for everyone with free community events sprinkled throughout. Since its inception, AWE has been proud to offer more than just a series of live music events, but a platform for the arts and a spark for creativity to come. “Alongside our festival artist programmes ticketed events, we also have a whole series of free performances and events,” festival director Justine Cormack says. “Our free performances this year feature our scholars and emerging artists. We have this programme, AWE Pettman Scholarship. Each year we award these scholarships from our Emerging Artists Programme.” Cormack refers to the programme as a mentoring pathway – each artist is supported beyond just the one year of the festival. It’s designed to directly assist future study and
career opportunities for emerging NZ musicians showing exceptional career promise. “We select four emerging artists each year to join us in the festival. This has grown to be an incredibly important opportunity for our best young musicians in the country. It’s highly competitive and the idea is that the three string players and a pianist are selected. They come, they perform in the festival and interact with our festival artists, and it’s a really amazing growth opportunity for them.”

" This year’s scholars are Cellist Christine Jeon and Pianist Matthew Seinafo. In addition to playing in some of the main programme’s shows, the pair will play a free show, AWE Scholars Showcase on Monday, 5 October at Te Atamira. There’s also the free Emerging Artist Showcase on Friday, 9 October. The extensive programme includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonin Dvorák, and Claude Debussy among many others. And for anyone who’s unsure if they’ll enjoy chamber music or are unfamiliar with it, the open rehearsals on Friday, 2 October are a great opportunity to get a taster and is right at the start of the festival, so there’s plenty of time to grab tickets to a show. “There are seven different programmes but they’re all very linked. You can go to one
programme and it stands on its own but the whole journey through the festival is highly curated for the experience of the audiences. It’s a really personal and engaging experience. You’re up close and personal to the musicians, and people love that. That’s the aspect of chamber music that is so wonderful.” The team have worked hard to pull unique sounds from all corners of the globe. Expect to hear a melting pot of cultural influences throughout the performances. Woven throughout each show you’ll also hear from Michael Norris, who is the AWE’s 2026 Composer in Residence. Cormack advises everyone to come along and just let the music have its own impact. The beautiful Te Atamira adds to that impact, too. “Throughout my whole career, some of the most powerful concerts that I’ve performed have been in art galleries where you’re surrounded by original art. For me, it’s a really valuable bringing together of creativity. Gallery spaces generally have fabulous acoustics, which are very important to us as performers. “Te Atamira has a very different feel because we’re in the same space but the art is different. That’s another thing that I’m very much looking forward to, I think that’s a really powerful pairing,” Cormack says. ON THE APP THIS WEEK Queenstown Celebrates Its First Ponnonam, Bringing Kerala’s Traditions to the Next Generation Queenstown, known around the world for its mountains, lakes and adventure tourism, witnessed a different kind of celebration this year as the local Malayali community came together for its first ‘Queenstown Ponnonam 2026’. Around 70 people, including children and families, gathered at St Peter’s Anglican Church Hall to celebrate Onam together. For the Queenstown Malayali community, the idea was not just to organise an Onam programme. Living so far away from Kerala, one of the main reasons for coming together was to share our culture, traditions, and values with our children and help them understand their roots. “Many of our children are growing up in New Zealand. They may hear about Onam and Kerala from their parents, but giving them a chance to actually take part in a pookkalam, watch and perform Thiruvathira, enjoy traditional games, listen to Malayalam songs and sit together for an Onam sadhya makes that connection much more meaningful,” Jayesh Menoth says.
The hall was filled with the colours and sounds of Onam, with a traditional pookkalam, nilavilakku, Thiruvathira and a range of cultural programmes. Children and adults took part in dances, couple performances and Onam games, along with a payasam competition and musical performances. Jayesh Menoth, Simi Jayesh, Binto and Shiyas coordinated the celebration with the support of the Queenstown Malayali community. Nimmi, Sruthy, Neethu, Maria and Mridula coordinated the dance programmes. Sanchit, Shilpa and Ayana hosted the event, while Majo, Paru, Febi and Ashwin entertained the gathering with music. The traditional Onam sadhya was another special part of the day. Sitting together and enjoying a Kerala-style feast served on banana leaves brought back many memories for those who grew up celebrating Onam back home. Jibin George and the team from Malabar Kitchen, Invercargill, prepared the sadhya, while Kerala Feast South Indian Takeaway supported the preparation of the pookkalam.
For many families, seeing the children enjoying these traditions was one of the happiest parts of the celebration. It was also a reminder that while we have made New Zealand our home, we can still keep a strong connection with where we come from. Onam has always been about people coming together, sharing what they have and celebrating as a community. Those were the values the organisers wanted the younger generation to experience through Queenstown Ponnonam. Celebrating Onam surrounded by Queenstown’s mountains was very different from celebrating it back in Kerala, but the feeling of togetherness was the same. The first Queenstown Ponnonam was a small beginning, but a meaningful one for the local Malayali community — a chance to celebrate together, remember home and, most importantly, pass our roots, culture and values on to the next generation.

You can browse what’s out there via the New Zealand Libraries’ combined catalogue, or simply ask us to track something down. A few things to know before you request an interloan: we can’t guarantee every library will agree to lend an item, and there’s a courier charge (see our Fees & Charges page) payable when you collect it, regardless of whether you end up borrowing it. Most requests arrive within one to two weeks, although this timeframe depends on where the item is coming from.
Sessions run at set times across Arrowtown, Hāwea, Frankton, Queenstown and Wānaka. Head to our What’s On page and filter by “Digital Literacy” to find a time and branch that suits you.
If an item turns out to be unavailable, you can always ask us to buy it for the collection instead via a Suggestion for Purchase form, so even a “no” from another library can end up growing what’s on our own shelves.

LINDSAY JACKSON Wildlife warrior
Her cousin is an internationally renowned Kiwi movie icon, and she’s been private nurse to wealthy British aristocracy, but you wouldn’t catch retired Queenstown nurse Lindsay Jackson skiting about all this.
Instead, you’re more likely these days to find her deep in the bush up the West Coast voluntarily trapping possums and rats in pursuit of her retirement passion, protecting our native birds and wildlife, or pitching in at planting days. A nurse for 43 years, some of that time during her OE in London, Lindsay’s cared for many locals, first at the old Lakes Hospital in Frankton then the present hospital which opened in the late 1980s, on duty in A&E, general wards and in maternity. It was a far cry from her early graduate Middlemore Hospital days where she trained, fresh out of Wellington’s Newlands College. Lindsay’s family had emigrated by ship to New Zealand as ‘Ten Pound Poms’ when she was 7 in 1964, leaving extended family scattered around England, a huge adventure for Lindsay and her brother. They moved in with her dad’s brother, Uncle Will, Auntie Joan and three-year-old cousin Peter Jackson, who’d go on to become an internationally acclaimed, Academy Award-winning director and writer putting New Zealand film on the map in Hollywood. “He’d have latex things and heads with posts on them and masks downstairs in the basement. “We went to school in Pukerua Bay then various parts of Wellington. “Dad brought the transistor radio out from England, sheets, shoes, transistors were all expensive here, and I’d listen to the Top 20.” Lindsay was a teen when her dad got their first car. Tragically, while she was studying nursing in Auckland her dad was killed in a car accident near Taupo, her mum thrown out of the car but surviving. Their dog died and cat on board disappeared. Lindsay was 20 and had to return after the funeral to sit her third-year exams and do night shift at Middlemore. “These days you’d

get help and counselling, but you just had to get on with it,” she says. Lindsay enjoyed working on the plastic surgery ward with burns patients, hitching to the South Island with friends before excitedly heading off on their OE. LA, then hitching across Canada wintering over in Sioux Lookout, wolves on the prowl outside, Lindsay then nursed in London, turning to private nursing in wealthy homes to fund her European summer travel. Among these was former British Ambassador to Greece Sir Clifford Norton, a lovely man she read poetry to.
“Dad brought the transistor radio out from England, sheets, shoes, transistors were all expensive here, and I’d listen to the Top 20.” She and her friends became ‘squatters’ in London’s infamous Bonnington Square one winter before Lindsay, by now dating ex-husband Duncan Smith, lived on a beach in Crete “with no clothes on”. After five years’ travel and a six-month stint at Aussie’s remote Mount Isa, they headed to Queenstown for Duncan to pursue his ski industry career, marrying here in 1987. While renowned hospital matron ‘Brem’, as she was affectionately known, ran a strict ship, Lindsay won her over after six weeks relieving for nurse friend Nicky Pearson. “At the end of it she gruffly said, ‘Oh, you’ll do’, but by then I’d found a job as a ski nurse in the Coronet Peak and Remarkables patrol rooms for Mount Cook.”
“It was quite scary there with no patients, so I’d lock myself in at night and go to bed in my uniform,” she laughs. “One night there was this huge bashing and banging on the door and I was terrified to open it, but I had to. It was a father who was desperate for a dummie for his new baby and knew we kept them,” she grins. After their kids, Anton and Paige, were born, Lindsay eventually ran outpatient and specialist clinics at the new hospital, also working for the visiting surgical bus. While still on ward duty in 2006 and by now separated, she had an intruder break into her Frankton home sneaking into her bedroom – a harrowing experience. “I leapt out at him like a mad thing, shouting, ‘Get out of my house’ and he ran off but I spent most of the night at the Police Station. It was a horrifying experience so I rang my hospital manger to say, ‘I’m not coming in today’ to which he said,’ Can you please arrange your replacement!’” Lindsay says. Nursing through Covid was a challenging time, Lindsay retiring in 2021. For years she was secretary and is still membership officer of the Wakatipu Tramping Club. She’s a devoted Wakatipu Wildlife Trust trapline volunteer, monitoring rodents around Tucker Beach, Frankton Track and Lake Hayes where she helps with bird counts. On any given day you could find Lindsay up Ben Lomond helping Skyline or Wakatipu Tramping Club pulling out wilding pines at their plots. She’s even done four stints as summer ranger on Ulva Island in the south. “I’m passionate about the environment and our wildlife now that I’m retired and have time.” Those two local grandkids are right up there too.
Lindsay also endured the solo night shift role, sleeping over alone at the old Sydney Street Maternity Home for a mere $6 a night, an hourly rate if she had to get up for a delivery. She’d work by day as a postie to top up her income.

Seasonal Gardener We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Seasonal Gardener to join the team at Arrowtown Lifestyle Village from early October 2026 until mid-April 2027. You will work alongside our gardening team to help maintain the grounds of our village throughout the busy growing season. This is a full-time, fixed-term position suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in producing high-quality work and is comfortable engaging with residents as part of their day.
