Sadly, three people died and five were hospitalised with smoke inhalation, when their house and income apartment on Queenstown Hill caught fire. The fire men were gutted they couldn’t get there sooner even though they drove across lawns to get past the stationery traffic.

The taxi driver was good enough to turn off his meter as it hit $240 to get from the airport to Fernhill. The passengers walked from town in the end.

Kind motorists helped push her vehicle to the side of the road on Hawthorne Drive as she ran out of power and fuel in the tailback. She couldn’t get back to it until midnight.

They said they spent nearly the entire trip in traffic and then were turned away at the base of the hill because the carparks were full. The bus alternative was even worse as they were stuck on the bus.

The kids wet their pants and don’t want to come again.

Sound impossible? This is the future if one more subdivision is started, let alone the places already under way.

ON THE APP THIS WEEK Arrowtown residents rally against proposed fast-track housing development - by RNZ Queenstown’s mayor says the government’s fasttrack process is allowing developers to sidestep years of planning work, leaving councils and communities to pick up the bill.

It comes as Arrowtown residents rally against a proposed housing development they claim could choke roads, harm local tourism and ultimately be a “folly of history”.

Ridgeburn Ltd is seeking fast-track consent to build a neighbouring community rivalling the historic township in size - comprising 1210 houses and a commercial precinct between Lake Hayes and the Kawarau River.

A meeting about the proposal organised by the newly formed group Queenstown Smart Growth Initiative (QSGI) drew more than 120 residents to the Arrowtown Rugby Club on Tuesday night.

QSGI spokesperson Hanna Pettit said the primary concern was that Queenstown Lakes District

“At a holistic level, it’s a bit like conservation. If you work in any conservation field, right plant, right place is absolutely key. And what we’re seeing are developments which are not the right plant in the right place - and they’re not going to thrive,” he said.

“The costs that get imposed downstream, down the road, on the community are quite significant.

And we have spent literally millions of dollars of ratepayers money coming up with plans for where growth should happen.”

He said conversations with other mayors suggested a rising tide of discontent with the fast-track process - and how it was undermining the careful planning work councils had already undertaken.

“We have a government that’s stood on localism and allowing local councils to make decisions. And of course this completely bypasses that,” he said.

Council had already identified well-located, serviced land capable of accommodating growth in its spatial plan - whereas Ridgeburn was about six kilometres beyond the boundary, in a place where traffic congestion was already all too common.

“The issue that we’ve got with Queenstown is that we live within a basin. So we’re restricted in terms of we can’t continue to sprawl and we can’t build roads to fix the issues that we have with the traffic infrastructure,” she said.

“The spatial plan is more than just red tape. It is really a plan that ensures development can happen in the right ways.”

The meeting saw frustrations aired not just about Ridgeburn, but also that it was one of 11 major fast-track proposals either flagged or submitted in the district.

Queenstown Lakes District Mayor John Glover said those concerns were valid.

Queenstown bouncers guilty of selling cocaine and ketamine to punters - by RNZ A group of Queenstown bouncers have pleaded guilty to drug charges after they were busted selling Class A drugs while on the job.

Apex Protection provides pub and club security in the heart of Queenstown.

The former owner of Apex, John Connell, was described in a police summary of facts as a “street dealer” who arranged for people to purchase cocaine from him while he was working at bars in the tourist town.

After initially pleading not guilty to the charges in May, the 23-year-old has since pleaded guilty to two charges of selling and supplying cocaine, one charge of selling and supplying ketamine, and one charge of failing to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search.

Cory Waller and Nikera Cherrington, who worked as doormen at clubs and bars in Queenstown for another company, pleaded guilty to one charge each of possession for supply of Class A drug cocaine.

All three appeared in the Queenstown District Court and will be sentenced in December.

The prosecution followed an investigation into the

supply of controlled drugs, namely cocaine and ketamine, in the Queenstown area started by police in June 2025.

Five bouncers were among the eight arrested, after police seized more than 60g of cocaine and smaller amounts of ketamine, MDA and GBL, as well as $120,000 in cash.

The summary of facts states police obtained a production order for Connell and an analysis of his telecommunications data.

These showed that between 1 June 2025 and 2 January 2026, not only was he a regular user of cocaine and ketamine, but he was supplying it to others.

In a text exchange on New Year’s Eve, he asked an associate if they had any more cocaine because he had sold out, saying he had sold 30g the night before.

His associate had also sold out.

“Yo but now I’m just losing sales haha should’ve gotten way more just wasn’t too sure hey,” Connell said in a message.

The summary of facts said the street price of 1g

of cocaine in Queenstown is between $350 and $400.

Therefore, the 30g of cocaine would have made Connell up to $12,000.

The telecommunications data also showed Connell was selling ketamine, but less frequently and in lesser amounts.

ACC for firefighters bill drawn Inspired by Queenstown petition organiser

The perseverance of a passionate Queenstown woman, determined not to give up, is already turning heads in the corridors of power with the ACC for firefighters member’s bill that she inspired being drawn from the ballot system and scheduled for its first reading.

Moved by the plight of former Kingston Fire Chief Pete Ottley, Katherine Lamont, herself the wife of longtime local firefighter Bobby Lamont, launched a nationwide petition fighting for the same ACC cover for volunteer firefighters as their paid counterparts.

Ottley was forced to quit his job after suffering from PTSD following a horrific fatal bus crash on Kingston Road in December 2024.

As a volunteer Ottley doesn’t qualify for any ACC cover which sparked Lamont to fight for change. She presented a petition calling for change with 36,500 signatures to Parliament last October and on 23 July was “blown away” when the bill she inspired was drawn from the biscuit tin at Parliament.

Labour MP Kieran McAnulty, also a former volunteer firefighter, lodged the bill which he says was inspired by Lamont’s petition.

“The example of Kingston’s former fire chief Peter Ottley shows how unfair the system is,” McAnulty posted recently. “He had to step down, and his community lost a committed volunteer, because ACC didn’t provide cover.

There are many more examples from right across the country. That is wrong, and I hope Parliament supports my bill so we can finally fix this.”

The bill is now scheduled for its first reading and will then be referred to the Parliamentary Select Committee process which involves public submissions.

That committee then makes recommendations to Parliament before the bill goes to a second and third reading.

“It’s absolutely amazing that it got drawn. Just so exciting,” a grateful Lamont, who was inundated with messages and phone calls of support the day the news broke (24 July), says. “I wasn’t expecting it to be drawn. It’s been such a lovely surprise,” she says. “It’s felt like a long haul with not much progress.” Her first call with the news was to Ottley and his partner who were overwhelmed.

Southland MP Joseph Mooney, also a former volunteer firefighter, says Lamont “deserves a huge amount of credit for doing a brilliant piece of work”, advocating for volunteer firefighters and raising so much awareness across New Zealand about the issue.

He also paid tribute to Ottley for his courage in sharing his story which also helped bring the issue to the fore.

Mooney says realistically there may not be time for hearings on the bill before the November elections, but the first reading should happen before then.

Netflix’s first locally commissioned New Zealand original series is currently filming in Queenstown.

Queenstown - an eight-episode ski-resort drama starring Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) and Frances O’Connor (The Twelve), centres around a privileged family and the people who work for them colliding over power, loyalty, and desire, according to Netflix.

The show is expected to contribute $40 million to the local economy and create 450 jobs over a five-month period, according to a statement from the streaming service seen by Otago Daily Times.

The production was shooting on location when they felt the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Te Anau last week, the New Zealand Herald reported.

It is supported by the New Zealand Film Commission and the Screen Production Rebate.

“Queenstown draws an exceptional team of talent and creatives, surrounded by this breathtaking environment,” Netflix Australia and New Zealand content director Amanda Duthie said in a press release.

“Shooting our first locally commissioned series here in New Zealand is a huge moment for us.”

The show is written and created Chloe Stearns (Wolf Like Me, the upcoming The Falling Girls), with Glendyn Ivin (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Penguin Bloom) and Roseanne Liang (Avatar: The Last Airbender) serving as co-directors. It comes from Australian production companies Silent Firework and Runaway Unicorn.

Netflix has yet to confirm when the series will be released.

It’s not the first Netflix series to be shot here. East of Eden and Sweet Tooth are two other series that have filmed in Aotearoa.

Queenstown has also often featured as the backdrop of several famous films, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Mission: Impossible: Fallout, The Chronicles of Narnia and Wolverine. Recently, Brad Pitt was in the area to film survival drama Heart of the Beasts.

Sixteen assessed after bus overturns on Glenorchy Road The passengers, believed to be tourists, and driver of a 22-seater tourist coach that flipped on its side on the Glenorchy Road early on Tuesday, 28 July, escaped with only a few being treated for minor cuts and grazes, Police say.

Wilkinson says the accident occurred at about 9am and the road was closed until about midday as the Mitsubishi Fuso coach, blocking both lanes, needed to be righted with tow trucks.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson says they assessed 16 patients at the scene, with one transported to Lakes District Hospital in a minor condition. “The remaining patients were also in a minor condition and did not require transport to hospital,” he says.

Wilkinson says investigations into the cause of the crash, 35km from Queenstown, are ongoing, but icy road conditions will be “something that will be looked at as a possible causative factor”.

Police are still urging motorists to be extra cautious in the wintry, icy conditions with black ice and grit making for challenging driving.

“Be aware that ice can be impossible to see, and care is required when driving in shaded areas, and on structures such as bridges, which can have ice on their road surfaces,” Wilkinson says.

Hungry punter One seemingly very hungry Fergburger customer, who allegedly climbed through the serving hatch and assaulted a staff member, has landed himself in court.

Area response manager Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson says about 2.30am on 10 July a man allegedly became verbally abusive to staff, climbing through the serving hatch into the kitchen area where he allegedly assaulted a staff member inside. The man allegedly threw a rubbish bin at staff, and two members of the public came into the kitchen to help staff subdue him until Police arrived, Wilkinson says.

The alleged assailant was taken for a medical assessment due to his level of intoxication, and a Fergburger staff member suffered a minor injury, he says.

The man was charged with assault with a blunt instrument, assault with intent to injure and disorderly behaviour.

A 28-year-old Queenstown man appeared in the Queenstown District Court on 20 July and will reappear in August.

Young UK driver charged A 21-year-old UK driver has been charged with operating a vehicle carelessly after a collision on Frankton Road on Friday, 24 July. Constable Amanda Shute says the vehicle had allegedly been overtaking other vehicles at speed using the median strip and lost control ending up down a bank and coming to rest below on the Frankton Walking Track. The man faces court on August 28.

Late night fight Two 20-year-old Australian men pleaded guilty to fighting in a public place and assault after a fight broke out between several people in Beach Street just before midnight last Thursday, 23 July. Shute says the fight started over allegations that people had been hassling another group inside a local bar. The two Australians were convicted and fined in the Queenstown District Court on Monday, 27 July.

Cardrona rescues The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter also flew a patient with moderate injuries to Dunedin Hospital after an accident on Cardrona Valley Road just before 12.30pm on Monday, 27 July, St John says. A patient was also flown to Lakes District Hospital after an accident at Cardrona Ski Area on Tuesday, 28 July.

“Very, very lucky” climber rescued after tumbling almost 300m

A climber who fell between 200m and 300m off a ledge down a very steep, rocky face while descending Mount Aspiring in darkness on Tuesday evening is “very, very lucky to be alive”, rescuers say.

Wakatipu Alpine Cliff Rescue Team coordinator Russ Tilsley says two men who’d climbed the south face that day were descending another route when one climber fell off a ridge down the steep, rocky slope. “It was dark and his climbing partner thought he’d died in the fall,” Tilsley says. The man who’d fallen had their personal locator beacon in his pack and with no phone coverage the other climber climbed more than three hours towards the summit to raise the alarm just after 9.30pm, reporting that his friend had likely died, he says.

With the weather diminishing rapidly Police launched a search and rescue operation with Otago Lakes SAR and Heli Otago, calling in the Queenstown alpine specialists around 10pm.

“When our guys flew in around midnight, they saw the head torch of the guy on the summit. The pilot flew to the hut first to offload a couple of the guys for lighter weight when the guys noticed another head torch on the glacier below,” Tilsley says. They picked up the companion off the summit and flew back: “This guy who’d fallen was wandering around dazed and confused. He’d taken quite a tumble and had a head injury.”

Tilsely says he was short roped down the steep slope to safety. It was 1am before both men were rescued. Wānaka Sergeant Darren Cranfield says the companion had climbed in difficult alpine terrain in search of reception, also becoming increasingly at risk of hypothermia. “This was a complex and dynamic operation where two lives were at risk,” he says.

The men were very close to the same steep slope known as The Ramp where the Wakatipu team rescued two bluffed climbers about a month ago in a very technical operation.

“The south face of Aspiring is a challenging and technical climb,” Tilsley says.

“We understand they were quite experienced, but phone reception was broken and it was windy. We didn’t really even know where this guy was.”

It was a 6-hour rescue job, thankfully with a great outcome for Police and rescuers, who are warning people to be aware of the conditions, carry good communications and leave plenty of time.

“We encourage anyone heading into alpine areas to thoroughly prepare, carry appropriate communication equipment and emergency supplies, and ensure they have a plan in place should the unexpected occur,” Cranfield says.

It’s a gathering of the snow-sliding community in this mountain town that we call home – stopping in Queenstown on 8 August and Wānaka on 7 August.

Patagonia ambassador Nicholas Wolken will be there for the special screenings of Simple as a Turn and DIG followed by live Q&A’s. Book club session

The first rule of book club is, talk about book club

Book Club at Queenstown Library is Adult Services Librarian Lili Owen’s favourite programme, hands down. On the last Thursday of each month the group meet to have a cuppa, some biscuits and have great conversations about books.

Owen has been running the club since December 2024 – it was first started in 2020 by her predecessor Amy O’Reily as a welcoming space for people to connect through a shared love of reading.

“Rather than everyone reading the same title, I set an optional monthly theme that serves as inspiration rather than a requirement, so members can read whatever interests them and then share their recommendations with the group,” Owen says. “We also do fun reading challenges, like Fantasy Book Tropes Bingo or read a translated book from a country pulled out of a hat.”

This year they also introduced a loyalty card where every third Book Club session attended earns a reading-related prize. This is because “reading for pleasure and being regularly involved in your community should be acknowledged and rewarded.”

There’s 10-12 regular attendees and some of the feedback Owen receives includes enjoyment of the inclusive and non-judgemental atmosphere, and appreciating not being required to read a set book.

Lili & Tessa (both library staff) reading The Raven Scholar, a very popular title at book club for a quite a few months in a row (one person would read it and recommend it, then someone else would read it and recommend it at the next session, rinse and repeat) “This format produces such a huge range of recommendations and encourages conversations across different ages, backgrounds and reading tastes – it really is as much about community connection as it is about books! After each session, I send out an email newsletter featuring all the books we discussed (with links to our library catalogue), and once a quarter I publish the newest issue of our free Book Club zine, chockerful of all the books mentioned over the past few months.”

An example of actual feedback received: Better than most book clubs because you can read whatever you like, instead of the standard one book. There is a theme but you don’t have to adhere to it, everyone is just happy that you show up. It’s a fantastic way to connect to other people through a genuine love of books. Every genre, and every viewpoint is appreciated. Also, snacks!

Owen explains that the themes are a mix of advance planning and ideas that emerge naturally from discussions during book club.

“I always try to balance popular topics with more creative or left-field themes that encourage people to broaden their reading horizons. Every month I change up the in-house Book Club display, which is full of on-theme books in case you’re stuck for what to choose – and this display gets refreshed weekly so make sure to check it out.”

Currently there's just the one book club in Queenstown, as well as a few options over the hill in Wānaka including their Teen Book Club and Queer Quarterly Reads. If you’re in Frankton and interested, swing by and have a chat to the Frankton Library team. Everyone is welcome at Book Club, and it’s a relaxed environment.

“It can be quite nerve-wracking creating programmes and hosting events, as you’re never sure how the community will respond or what interest might be. It has been so rewarding seeing how Book Club has continued to go from strength to strength, and watch people form in-person connections thanks to the magic of books and conversation… and tea and biscuits!”

Book club is on the last Thursday of every month. A reminder that the theme isn’t strict – you can read/bring/talk about any book you like, however August’s theme is LGBTQIA+ and September’s theme will be Cli-Fi and Sci-Fi. LINDSAY REID

Roots firmly etched in the Wakatipu Lindsay Reid has never been one to get rattled, despite a teaching and principal’s career that spanned 33 years across Otago, even landing him temporarily on the Chatham Islands.

Instead, renowned for his patience, compassion and kindness, Lindsay saved the scolding and lectures, applying his own unique practical style which produced much more impressive results.

A huge volunteer contributor to the Wakatipu community along with wife Gill, Lindsay, a humble and generous man, had a major impact as a teacher and principal, particularly in Arrowtown, where he was a pupil himself in the early 1940s.

Sport, especially cricket and rugby, were his passions, coaching these, golf, athletics and cross country, encouraging kids in the benefits of sport and playing himself at Otago representative level.

“Dad believed that a measure of competitiveness in sport was good for you and taught the values of cooperation, determination and general camaraderie,” writer and historian daughter Becky Reid says.

He was a past president of the Queenstown Cricket Club, competing around the region for the Central Otago Wanderers for many years after the family moved back from West Otago in 1975. He played rugby for Otago, in the team that took out the Ranfurly Shield in 1957, and was also an Otago Country Cricket rep.

Past pupils fondly recall ‘Mr Reid’s pre-morning tea runs’ through the Bob’s Peak forest to keep the brain active.

Lindsay also led the charge on outdoor education always on hand as ‘Camp Dad’.

His compassion and wisdom saw him serve as a valued member of the Central Otago Children’s Care and Protection Panel and as treasurer of the Queenstown Social Services Committee in the 1990s.

camp chalet, all the other girls got grounded.

Instead, Dad really ramped up my running and fitness programme - always adamant that under his strict training regime, I would be so “into sport, that I’d stay out of court”.

Pupils and Reid’s kids all know their times tables well, thanks to Lindsay devising a novel game called ‘Snatch It’, using the rubber end of a milking machine - his own kind of back in the day form of ‘The Chase’.

“Shortly after I’d won a few media awards in TV news and current affairs, I was out in the paddock with Dad one day putting up an electric fence,” Melanie recalls. “He said, ‘Don’t get too big for your boots.

You’re just like this electric fence. If you’re not earthed, you don’t work.”

From age six local grandson Ollie Kirk was advised by ‘Pop’ that “rugby players shouldn’t wear leggings or skins under their rugby shorts, even if playing in the Maniototo in minus 8deg”. “He made it very clear that leggings were for soccer players. I’ve never worn them since,” Ollie grins.

The son of a hardy Macetown-bred farmer, farming and the Wakatipu were firmly etched in Lindsay’s bloodline.

He ran sheep and a few cattle on Gorge Road and on his award-winning TV journalist daughter Melanie Reid’s land on Malaghan’s Road.

“His philosophy growing up was ‘sport keeps you out of court’,” daughter Amy, youngest of five, smiles. “When I crashed the car driving friends around on my ‘Restricted’ licence at 15, then got in trouble for smuggling rum into our Girl Guide

were born and raised at Macetown, his mother later trekking up Tobins Track daily to teach at Crown Terrace School.

Lindsay and his brother rode ponies from Brookside to Arrowtown School as kids, the family moving to Dunedin in 1946 where Lindsay went to Musselburgh School, and Kings High, a prefect in the mid-1950s, captaining the First XV and First XI. In 1956 Lindsay headed to Dunedin’s Teacher’s College where he met Gill, also a trainee.

Eldest child Chris was born in a Tapanui snowstorm in 1961, Lindsay hitching a ride to the maternity home on a tractor determined to meet his firstborn, only to be turned away by the matron, ‘fathers not welcome’, especially those covered in snow!

Lindsay was sole teacher at Beaumont then taught at Tapanui District High in 1969 before his roots drew him home to be deputy principal at Queenstown Primary in 1975.

The family arrived, horse float in tow with Melanie’s pony which lived in their initial downtown Queenstown Stanley Street yard, often escaping off at a gallop down Shotover Street.

In 1980 he became principal-teacher at Arrowtown School where he stayed for a decade, also later enjoying two stints teaching on the Chathams at New Zealand’s most remote school.

Lindsay was president of the West Otago – Tapanui Lions and an active contributor to the Queenstown Lions Club for many years, also a president of the Wakatipu Pony Club.

He served on the Wakatipu High School Committee of Management from 1994 and was a local electoral returning officer for 30 years.

Raising five kids, he also worked during school holidays loading passengers on and off the old bubble-style Skyline Gondolas, near the family’s Bowen Street home of 28 years.

Sadly, Lindsay passed away peacefully on 9 July, aged 90.

QLDC Economic Diversification Fund opens for applications Businesses, organisations, and innovators with bold ideas to help shape the future of the Queenstown Lakes economy are encouraged to apply for funding through QLDC’s Economic Diversification Fund.

Applications for the 2026–2027 funding round are open from 31 July to 30 September 2026. The fund supports collaborative projects that foster innovation, unlock new opportunities, and build a more resilient and diverse local economy.

The fund supports initiatives with the potential to create lasting impact, including pilot initiatives, feasibility studies, business and sector collaborations, research, scoping work, and project delivery.

Organisations from across New Zealand are eligible to apply, provided their project involves collaboration with at least one Queenstown Lakes-based organisation, businesses, or community group.

QLDC Economic Development Manager Peter Harris said building a more diverse economy is critical to the long-term resilience of Queenstown Lakes.

“This fund is about creating new opportunities, supporting innovation, and strengthening the connections that help great ideas grow. We know there are exceptional businesses, organisations and individuals already doing this work, and the fund is designed to help them collaborate, scale their impact, and create lasting benefits for our communities.”

One of the successful recipients from the 2025–2026 funding round was Community Tech Lab, a collaboration between Startup Queenstown Lakes, Queenstown Creative Collective (QCC), FLINT, Queenstown Resort College (QRC) and huddl.

FLINT Chair Giovanni Stephens said the funding has really enabled momentum.

“It has helped local organisations come together around a shared vision, building technology capability here in the district rather than importing it.

“We are now preparing to launch, with the build phase and a showcase event to follow later this year.”

Another successful recipient was Path to the Creative World | Te Ara ki te Ao Auah, a project led by Three Lakes Cultural Trust that highlights the diverse creative pathways available across the district.

Gizelle Regan, Programme Curator Te Muka Toi Te Muka Takata – Hui and Trustee of Three Cultural Lakes Trust, said the Economic Diversification Fund had been instrumental in bringing the project to life.

“The funding enabled us to produce Te Ara ki te Ao Auaha, a short film profiling the people who are building creative careers and lives in Queenstown Lakes. By showcasing their journeys, we hope to inspire young people and highlight the breadth of opportunities within our local creative economy.”

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest by 31 August 2026. This provides an opportunity to discuss project ideas with the Economic Futures team and receive guidance to help ensure applications align with the fund’s objectives and eligibility.

Applications close on Wednesday 30 September 2026.
