Some events sparkle because of the dresses. Others because of the cause. The Naylor Love Cancer Society Queenstown Ball sparkles because of both.
Since working alongside the Cancer Society, I have been genuinely humbled by what happens behind the scenes. The care. The coordination. The sheer amount of effort that goes into raising funds so that when someone in our community hears the words “you have cancer,” they are not left to navigate it alone.
Like many of you, I have been personally affected by cancer more times than I care to remember. Family. Close friends. Colleagues. It is rarely a distant headline. It shows up at kitchen tables, in hospital corridors, in conversations that change everything. When you see that up close, you understand why this work matters so deeply.
What has struck me most is that so much of the Cancer Society’s support across Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago is funded by us. Locally raised donations supporting local people.
That support is practical and immediate. Assistance with travel and accommodation for treatment. Counselling for individuals and families. Specialist nurse advice. Health promotion and prevention programmes. These services are not abstract. They are used by people in our region every single week, and they are made possible by fundraising efforts like this. Every ticket purchased. Every auction bid. Every sponsorship secured. It all feeds directly back into our community.
On Saturday 28 March 2026, the Millennium Hotel will transform for what promises to be an incredible evening. Yes, it will be glamorous. Yes, there will be extraordinary auction items generously donated by local businesses. Yes, it will be a night to gather friends, colleagues and family and enjoy a wellearned celebration. But beneath the music and the sparkle is something far more meaningful.
It is a room full of people choosing to show up for one another.
Over the years, the Queenstown Ball has become one of the region’s most anticipated fundraising events. Businesses rally behind it. Families book tables together. Friends make it their annual night out. The energy in the room is unforgettable, but the true impact stretches far beyond one evening. Cancer touches nearly every family in some way. We cannot always control that reality. What we can control is how we respond.
From what I have seen, the Cancer Society responds with compassion, professionalism and unwavering commitment. Supporting this event is one small but powerful way we can stand alongside them. I would love to see as many of you there as possible. Let’s make it a night to remember, for all the right reasons.

ON THE APP THIS WEEK
The University of Otago will offer two new qualifications in Queenstown as part of a longterm plan to build a campus in the resort town. The university will begin teaching an undergraduate degree in entrepreneurship and a postgraduate qualification in digital technology.
Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson said the university was starting small and expected about 50 to 60 students to enrol.
The university hoped to build accommodation for about 500 students by 2030 and offer executive education programmes - short, industryfocussed courses, Robertson said.
“I’m excited by the fact that we’re on track to have students there next year,” he said.
“This is the second fastest growing region in New Zealand. It’s an international destination. It’s in the Otago province and we do see it as a place where over the next couple of decades we’ll be able to grow our presence.
“Dunedin will always be the home of the University of Otago but Queenstown is a growth area and, if we do fast forward 20 or so years, you can certainly see the potential there for a large scale campus.”
The university was in the process of finalising
Some Mackenzie District workers are resorting to sleeping in cars, campervans or commuting because there are not enough affordable, longterm rentals.
The local mayor has described Tekapo and Twizel as bursting at the seams with visitors, saying it was a welcome economic boost, but it was coming at a cost.
Hundreds of homes were earmarked for shortterm stays and prices remained high, leaving some struggling to find a roof over their heads.
Tour guide Elsie said Tekapo was a must-see for all of her groups.
temporary premises in Queenstown for the first courses, Robertson said.
A property at Jack’s Point - donated by the Jardine family to the university’s Foundation Trust - would host academic retreats, conferences and engagement events from next year. The university said it expected to eventually support between 1000 and 3000 students in Queenstown. However, Robertson said that was a very long-term goal.
“We’re conscious that we need to build this up in a sustainable way. We’re initially funding the establishment but, like all programmes at our university, what we offer in Queenstown will need to fund itself and so it will need to grow over time.”
The university would focus on international students and the courses offered in Queenstown would be designed with technology companies, Robertson said.
In a statement, the university said Palo Alto Networks would be co-developing and delivering programmes related to cybersecurity.
“We’re designing curriculum with industry and other academic institutions rather than trying to drop an existing programme in,” Robertson said.
“One of our mantras was we weren’t going to replicate what we do in Dunedin. Our long-term plan for Queenstown is to be adding value. We’ll still be delivering our courses in Dunedin but we wanted to do something different. Technology Queenstown (a not-for-profit agency) wanted to be a partner and we believe we’re both fulfilling a need but also creating some demand because of the location and because of the kinds of courses.”
The university appointed Professor Richard Barker as a full-time Queenstown establishment director last year.
A proposed gold mine is on the fast-track list. Proponents says it will bring jobs and money to the region, but opponents say it will be an economic ‘short-term sugar hit... with long-term consequences.’
Plans for a large, open cast gold mine in Central Otago are pitting locals against each other, while a mining industry executive says New Zealanders are too negative and catastrophise projects they don’t understand.
Australian company Santana Minerals has applied for fast-track approval to build an open cast mine in the Dunstan mountain range, an hour’s drive east of Queenstown, after discovering what it calls the largest single gold deposit in New Zealand in more than four decades.
According to the documents submitted to the fast-track panel, Santana will build four open mine pits. The largest, Rise and Shine Open Pit will be one kilometre long, 800 metres wide and 200 metres deep. There will also be three shallower pits, a processing plant that is one kilometre long and 120 metres wide, and a tailing storage facility to store mineral waste.
It says the project will employ hundreds of people and be worth $6 billion in revenue and more than $1b in taxes and royalties for New Zealand.
The fast-track panel is set to decide by late October and, if approved, it will be the first new mine to get the go-ahead under the accelerated process.
But finding a bed or rental for the many guides who passed through was a challenge.
She described the accommodation as expensive, and in high demand and short supply during peak visitor season, and sometimes guides could not find a place to stay.
“In Tekapo, there is a camping area, but they only can sleep in the car and then... next day, they need to work nine to ten hours and then drive probably roughly two to five hours. So, it’s quite hard job for them if they couldn’t sleep very well,” she said.
She had also resorted to sleeping in a car a few times, but was now linking up with other guides
in the hope they might have more luck finding a rental.
Other popular destinations, including Queenstown, have also raised similar concerns that their small ratepayer base was insufficient to cover the rising costs associated with growing visitor numbers.

Keeping up with immigration changes for Residency and changes to Student Visa work rights
From August 2026, important immigration changes are coming that may a ect you.
These changes o er new opportunities for those working in skill level 1 to 3 roles. Creating a genuine chance for residency in New Zealand.
It is important to understand that there will still be conditions and requirements to meet, and not all final policy details have been released.
To help understand what is coming and how it may a ect you, Arrowtown Immigration and Citizens Advice Bureau are hosting a FREE information event
Held on Thursday, 12 March, at the Queenstown Events Centre, starting at 6pm.
This is a FREE event, but registration is required as numbers are limited. Email queenstown@cab.org.nz to register.
This is an opportunity to ask questions and gain an understanding of how these changes could a ect you.
One of the most common questions we are asked relates to Restaurant Manager and Duty Manager positions.
These roles usually sit at skill level 2, and while accepted for an AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa), for a residence application, assessments can be very di erent.
Immigration New Zealand look much more closely at what you do in your role. It is not enough to hold a job title. You may be asked for evidence that your day-to-day duties match the o icial descriptions for your occupation.
For example, you may be asked to show that you genuinely hire and manage sta , are responsible for rosters and budgets, organise menus or events, take part in recruitment and interviews, and operate at a real management level within the business.
Immigration New Zealand may also ask for the structure of your workplace. If you work alongside the owner of a small business, they may question why a full-time manager role is required, particularly where there are only three or four sta . These are very common challenges for people applying for residence in hospitality.
Hoops in the Park

Remarkables Park Town Centre, near The Shelter. The Otago Nuggets are making a quick stop at Remarkables Park Town Centre ahead of the NBL season. Join us for a free, high energy morning of hoops, games and giveaways.
Scan the QR code for more info and register for your chance to WIN* a family trip to Dunedin to watch the Otago Nuggets live.
Our advice is simple: start preparing early. Keep copies of emails, messages and documents that show you arranging rosters, managing budgets, placing orders, organising interviews and making management decisions. This evidence can be crucial when applying for residence.
Student Visa work rights: Student visa holders can now work up to 25 hours per week, but this is not automatic. If your visa was granted before 3 November 2025, you must apply for a Variation of Conditions before working the extra hours. Always check your visa conditions before increasing your work hours.

Alleged shoplifter throws pie at staff
by Sue Fea
Sergeant Tracy Haggart says a 41-year-old Queenstown man was also arrested for shoplifting and trespass at a Camp Street store, allegedly throwing a pie at a staff member and threating to hit him, at 12.35pm on Monday, 2 March.
Sergeant Tracy Haggart says the man had been previously trespassed and was allegedly in the store. “He was recognised by staff for an earlier shoplifting incident and trespass.” When approached he allegedly threw a pie at the staff member and continued to threaten to hit him, she says. When spoken to by Police he was allegedly found to have further items he had just stolen on him. The man was remanded in custody to appear in the Queenstown District Court on 23 March, facing a charge of assault, two charges of shoplifting and two of wilful trespass.
Haggart says Police are continuing to apprehend shoplifters locally, “thanks to the quality CCTV footage and information provided by retailers and their staff”. “We remain focused on holding all these offenders to account.”
Wrong way home
A 37-year-old Queenstown woman, who allegedly drove her vehicle the wrong way down Arrowtown’s main street at 12.20am on Sunday, 1 March, and allegedly struck out at Police, has been charged with resisting and assaulting Police, and refusing a blood sample.
Haggart says Police received reports from members of the public that a vehicle was being driven the wrong way down Buckingham Street. She was located a short time later by Police, allegedly striking out at them when required to accompany them and while being transported to the station. The woman then allegedly refused to undergo any breath alcohol
Vehicle allegedly swerving into median strip
A 26-year-old Queenstown man will appear in court on 20 March after a vehicle was seen by Police allegedly swerving into the median strip on Frankton Road just after 5am on Sunday, 1 March, soon after being reported for dangerous driving through Queenstown, Haggart says. The man then allegedly failed to complete a breath test and refused a medical professional’s request for blood. He’s been summoned to court for refusing a medical officer’s request for blood.
Car flips on Boyd Road bend
Police inquiries are continuing in the bid to speak with the driver of a Nissan station-wagon that flipped onto its roof after the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a bend near Boyd Road, on the Kingston Road, at 3am on Sunday, 1 March. The male driver allegedly crossed the centreline and lost control, Haggart says. He had allegedly approached a tight lefthand bend, near Boyd Road intersection, heading towards Queenstown. The vehicle then allegedly crossed the centreline, losing control and flipped before coming to rest upside down in a ditch, she says.
A man was allegedly seen exiting the vehicle and walking off from the scene, Haggart says.
Lost control – Crash on Kingston Road
Further along Kingston Road at Wye Creek just before 7pm the same day a 19-year-old Kerikeri man crashed heading towards Kingston in a Mazda. Haggart says he allegedly lost control of the vehicle approaching a tight corner at speed in wet conditions. The Mazda collided with a Suzuki vehicle travelling towards Queenstown, but no one was injured.

COMMUNITY NOTES
The Whakatipu Buddy programme
If you want to know the benefits of “Buddying” Ask Big Buddy Darren Ryan and his Buddy Jett Ketchel.
The Whakatipu Buddy programme is appealing for locals willing to spend two to three hours a week with a child needing extra adult support. They are holding a training in April.
Darren has been a Big Buddy to 13-year-old Jett for nearly 2 years. “Our favourite things to do are everything and anything! We have awesome fun hanging out and being mates”. Jett enjoys biking and games, and they even went on a West Coast adventure earlier this year!
Currently 16 Big Buddies are matched with 16 Little Buddies in the Whakatipu Basin. Children are aged 4-12 years when matched and are referred by agencies such as Queenstown Lakes Family Services, Happiness House and schools. This can be for a variety of reasons such as learning difficulties or having a sole parent in need of more support. Big Buddies are encouraged to do low or no cost activities with their Little Buddies. Two to three times a year there are organised activities such as visits to
Arrowtown Bowling club, iFLY, Silky Otter movies and a Christmas function at Skyline Gondola and Luge. Feedback from parents, schools and referrers is that Little Buddies have improved social skills and confidence and love learning new things. Little Buddies are helped to find their passions such as art, cooking , biking or fishing. Big Buddies get good training and back up from coordinator Nanette Benington.

Numerous complaints as Jack’s Point traffic increases dramatically - NZTA responds
by Sue Fea
Jack’s Point residents say traffic has “dramatically increased” exiting Jack’s Point during peak hour with neighbouring Hanley’s Farm residents diverting there to use Jack’s Point’s safer and normally less clogged exit onto the State Highway.
Chairman of the Jack’s Point Residents’ Association Mike Coburn says they’ve received “numerous complaints” from Jack’s Point residents frustrated with having to wait in long queues - sometimes 1km long, just to exit onto the State Highway.
The association’s committee is now in talks with the Queenstown Lakes District Council amid concerns about the ongoing wear and tear on Jack’s Point’s roads. “We’re concerned about the maintenance of our roads,” Coburn says. “It’s likely to increase substantially the maintenance costs.”
He’s seen the traffic backed up as far in as Homestead Bay Road and Jack’s Point residents trying to get onto a now congested Māori Jack Road from Morrison Drive and Jack’s Point Rise, which is becoming increasingly frustrating for them.
“Our intersection is safe and people have to stop there – it’s a different type of intersection.”
On the other hand, Hanley’s residents are extremely concerned about the delays and dangers trying to access the 100km/hr State Highway from their own exit, many saying it’s only a matter of time before there’s a serious accident.
They’re urging the New Zealand Transport Agency to lower the highway speed limit before tragedy occurs.
NZTA responds
New Zealand Transport Agency system design regional manager Richard Osborne says several weeks ago, after a crash and a Facebook post urging action from a Hanley’s resident, they received 27 queries and complaints about the Hanley’s intersection. “We will be responding to each of those,” he says.
Osborne says his team was “not familiar with traffic redirecting to Māori Jack Road at Jack’s Point specifically, but it is understandable that this may be happening if there is congestion at the Hanley’s Farm intersection”.
He says different options for the Hanley’s State Highway intersection have been considered and the current preferred option is a roundabout. “However, any funding for safety improvements will need to be considered in future National Land Transport Programmes cycles.”
“People can be assured that NZTA is looking at the speed limit on that section of State Highway 6/Kingston Road,” Osborne says. “The location has been logged as a community request to be considered alongside other requests for a speed limit review, under the framework of the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024.”
The timing of any formal assessment or community consultation will depend on “alignment with the requirements of the Rule, funding, priorities and how it aligns with wider speed management work in the area”.
“We will be able to share more as we work through this process, and any speed limit review will be notified,” he says.

Chocolate craving nets supermarket shoplifters
by Sue Fea
Police say they’ll be continuing to clamp down on shoplifters after the arrest of two alleged, wanted Queenstown male shoplifters, aged 19 and 20, on Tuesday, 3 March, who were allegedly on a pitstop to curb a chocolate craving at a Frankton supermarket.
Police say a vigilant Police officer stopping in at the supermarket noticed two men matching the description of offenders from a previous shoplifting incident several days prior. “Upon enquiries, the officer located further evidence indicating the pair were also (allegedly) shoplifting at the time, and they were subsequently arrested,” a Police spokesperson says.
They will appear in Queenstown District Court on 23 March, charged with shoplifting.
Otago Lakes Central Area Commander, Inspector Paula Enoka, says this is “a great catch” and a further step towards Police’s crackdown on retail crime.
“I would like to commend the officer - their keen eye and attention to detail is what has led to this arrest.
“This type of offending puts a big strain on our local businesses and will not be tolerated by Police or the community.”
She says Police are committed to targeting retail crime and holding offenders to account, which these arrests are testament to.

Looking at the wild stuff inside us
by Jessica Allen
Theatre show SELENE, a story about the goddess and the dark side of the moon, is coming to town. A radical explosion of ancient myth, it’s about how we grow up defined by our bodies, the light (and dark) sides of us, and all the wild stuff inside of us.
The show is presented by UK-based Wright&Grainger, and told and made with Megan Drury. Based in North Yorkshire, she got involved with the company after emigrating from Australia. Drury says she found a “gorgeous alchemy” in the work that Wight&Grainger do and what she’s now interested in as an artist. While starting out on the path to acting, she now refers to herself as an artist, as not all of her endeavours are strictly acting.
“The story really is about growing up defined by the body that we’re in, defined by the people around us, and finding our way through to something that feels authentically us.”
“I trained many moons ago as an actor,” Drury says. “That’s primarily been my career path – as an actor and a performer. In recent years, my creative passions have expanded beyond traditional theatre and screen work, and I’ve really sought out work that is pushing at doing things differently – at engaging with audiences differently, at different formats of communicating stories and gathering communities together.”
SELENE is a sibling show to the hugely acclaimed HELIOS, which focused on the son of the god of the sun. It was about pride, growing up and the
invisible monuments we plant in our landscape. Drury explains that Wight&Grainger always knew they wanted to do a sibling to that show, and they knew they wanted to do it with her.
“Which was gorgeous to have these beautifully brilliant, creative minds and talents wanting to craft a show with me. So I’ve been part of the creative process of SELENE, I’ve made the show with them.”
The show follows the goddess and the dark side of the moon, looking at Selene’s child, Pandia. While Selene is a very important character, Pandia in ancient Greek mythology is the goddess of the full moon and the show explores her growing up.
“The story really is about growing up defined by the body that we’re in, defined by the people around us, and finding our way through to something that feels authentically us.”
It tracks Pandia from 12 until 24, meeting her friends and family along the way. Beyond finding oneself it looks at embracing all the different aspects of ourselves, embracing the dark sides of us and the light sides of us – and is there even such a thing as dark and light sides, or are we just not looking at them properly?
Alex Wright is still the wordsmith and Phil Gtanger the musician, and Drury got to step in and be part of the development process. They all dug deep into the story to understand how it sits in her body and voice, and as a result, there’s pieces of hers scattered throughout.
“Alex knows me very, very well, so even in the writing of it, I feel like he wove in parts of me already. Even when I came to his first draft, I felt like he and Phil – even in the music as well – had really captured parts of me in a way that I felt really touched by and really moved by.”
Bringing her own creative input felt natural from that point and she’s described it as a beautiful experience since then.
“It takes all these elements of ancient Greek myth about the moon and pieces them all together in this beautiful interwoven structure. I think people tend to walk out feeling like they’re a part of something, feeling part of a community, feeling uplifted.”
The intimate theatre experience that is SELENE will take place as part of Wānaka’s Aspiring Conversations on Saturday, 28 March, from 6pm at Lake Wānaka Centre, and at Te Atamira Queenstown on Sunday, 29 March, from 5pm. Tickets and more information can be found at festivalofcolour.co.nz for Wānaka and teatamira.nz for Queenstown.
Kiwi Park sprung from humble origins. An unofficial rubbish tip in the 1980’s has been grown by one local family into a hub of conservation and education, passionately preserving native Taonga species – offering the public rich experiences and precious time in nature.
Today, visitors from across the globe flock to encounter New Zealand’s iconic Kiwi Bird in the heart Queenstown, of which we have bred, raised and released over 100 throughout the years – doing vital work for the population of these incredible birds since 1986.
This March, Kiwi Park turns 40.
Richard Wilson, General Manager and grandson of founder Dick Wilson, says: “Celebrating 40 years is not just about looking back. It’s about strengthening our commitment to conservation for generations to come.”
Naturally, there’ll be a huge 40th birthday celebration here at the park, premiering the heartfelt ‘Thriving at Forty’ short film, made in conjunction with Shotover Creative, bringing our incredible story to life.
So much changes around Queenstown, but the Wilson family’s passion for wildlife remains through education, conservation and collaboration, three generations of the Wilson family have been keeping native Taonga species front and center.
Paul Wilson, Director and son of founder Dick Wilson, said “40 years ago Queenstown was a quiet place full of small, family-run business. And we’re still that – born and bred. Queenstown will keep growing and so will we. Our conservation work is only becoming more important.”
And that’s far from everything…
Now a thriving five-acre wildlife sanctuary including over 20 different
species in the beating heart of Queenstown, reforested with native trees and shrubs, Kiwi Park is celebrating 40 instrumental years of conservation. This includes the breeding & release of South Island Kaka, Whio Blue Ducks and Pāteke… Not just the iconic kiwi birds.
Beth Millican, Head of Wildlife, adds: “In a tourist town famous for rushing adrenaline, we’re an oasis and a sanctuary – conserving and preserving the wildlife which makes Aotearoa so special.”
Plus, the site today includes the Honey-bee Centre, with its transparent beehive and free, educational honey tastings, bringing the value of flora to life.
The Future is Bright
Curiosity has not fled the coop at Kiwi Park, and a bold 2026 is looming. Turning 40 is a big deal.
This all serves to ignite a year-long events calendar, called Forty for Forty Years, highlighting four incredible decades of growth and conservation. Visit and stay in touch to watch how our wings continue to spread, embracing nature and flying the flag for Aotearoa’s wildlife right here in Queenstown.

My Life story
JOHN ‘J.R.’ MCCORMACK
Risky business
He’s saved many lives in his time and risked his own a few, just for the thrill of a good ride, but these days one of Queenstown’s original 1970s rafting guides and tandem paragliding pilots, John ‘J.R.’ McCormack, is an artist, kicking back eating whitebait on the West Coast.
J.R.’s been hair-raisingly close to being attacked by sharks, was bitten by a scorpion while kayaking down the Grand Canyon, purposely ran over the Queenstown traffic cop’s foot, and lived to tell the tale.
It was all in a day’s work for a Southland surf lifesaving champion, well used to the term ‘toughen up’, biking 15kms to Invercargill’s chilly Oreti Beach at 12, then dragging an old longboard from the Surf Club to the water by himself. “I’ve surfed near Curio Bay over dark, black, sharkprone waters, my hands and feet up on the board. Once the sand was frozen and there was snow on the beach.”
J.R. grew up in the water, one of five kids and the son of a car dealer. “I also learned to understand rough weather, which proved valuable in my later years guiding, tacking to school in side winds on my bike.”
He had his share of wins in the Southland Swim Team until at 17 he was brought out to compete for the Oreti Surf Lifesaving Club, swimming in a relay across Foveaux Strait at 15. J.R. won Southland and Otago titles. “I was quick in the ocean – no flip turns! We patrolled the beaches in summer with a spotter plane up looking for sharks,” he says. “We pulled a number of people out of the water at Oreti Beach, the little kids were the worst, and I’ve seen more sharks there than any other beach I’ve surfed at around the world.”
He was offered an American university scholarship at 16 and at 69 J.R. is still number one-ranked NZ Masters South Island Age-Group swimmer. After leaving school to be an apprentice chef in Westport, J.R. discovered Queenstown was more fun having been here skiing with friend Rob McCrostie.
He travelled widely, cooking and surfing, including long stays on the Gold Coast, but “Queenstown was as nice as anywhere”.
One hot summer he’d left work at The Continental taking a dip in the lake and a cold beer at Eichardt’s where he met Queenstown original commercial rafting founder Dale Gardiner, of Dane’s. “I was offered a job with Dale, whose American river guides trained me up – a partner within three years,” J.R. says. “Training on the Shotover really positioned me in a good place to work anywhere. That’s the best training ground you can ever get.”
“I sat on that verandah and watched the change in Queenstown over a long period of time.”
It was intense and at times dangerous, no technology to guide them then: “We just had marks on rocks to guide river levels.”
They were fun times, J.R. riding his Vespa once into the Mount Cook booking office to check bookings, riding on out the back door. On another occasion traffic cop Chris Blackford tried to enforce the new ‘no parking’ yellow lines outside, a rebellious J.R. driving off and over his foot with a vanload of rafts! “In future we had a good relationship.”
On summer nights the boys would don their speedos for inter-firm swimming relay competitions in the old unheated Ballarat Street pool.
J.R. also did stints ski patrolling and was one of the first to start commercial tandem paragliding off Skyline Hill. “Fifteen of us formed Queenstown Commercial Paragliders Ltd, working with DOC, the council and Skyline to establish leases and concessions. Once we were licensed the Civil
Aviation Authority and NZ Hang-gliding and Paragliding Association got involved.”
J.R. was well used to licensing having worked for the Transport Ministry’s marine department licensing river guides.
His historic apricot-coloured cottage on Gorge Road heading out of Queenstown was renowned as “a bit of a central drop-in spot”, and later his art studio, that he purchased for $25,000, aged 23, in 1981. “I had a week to find the $5000 deposit.” It was sold 10 years ago and transported to St Bathans.
“I sat on that verandah and watched the change in Queenstown over a long period of time.”
In more recent times J.R. has been making waves with his art, in particular his ‘Stolen Westy’s Teapot Series’, an idea stemming from an alcohol-fuelled late-night theft of the large green teapot from popular 1980s Queenstown restaurant, Westy’s. “I woke up after a night out and there it was in my house,” J.R. grins.
It was inspiration for great teapot art; however, others took a liking too and stole it from him during his ‘Stolen Westy’s Teapot Series’ exhibition of 35 paintings at Sky Bar in 2006. “They posted photos of it to me in various strategic locations around New Zealand – from the Beehive and Cook Strait ferry to Auckland. No social media in those days.”
J.R. moved to Cape Fowlwind, near Westport, in 2023 when teapot thieves struck again but just now it’s back at his home. Westy’s co-owner Kevin Templeton, now in Invercargill, was so bemused that he now has one of the paintings.
Just late last year J.R. created vinyl car stickers depicting paintings of his teapot labelled ‘Stolen’. “They’ve taken off. T-shirts are on the way. I’m already sending orders overseas.”
J.R. at home on the West Coast – the now famous ‘Stolen Westy’s Teapot’ now back in his possession and a focus of his art. (‘Stolen’ car sticker at right)
