Merry Christmas Here we go….. after a very quiet few weeks when town has just been for the locals, we are about to feel the influx of holiday crowds again as we become one of the most sought-after summer holiday destinations in the country and our population temporarily explodes. We are expecting potentially more than 100,000 people in Queenstown and up to 80,000 in Wanaka across the next few weeks. That’s a huge number of people who need to be accommodated, fed, watered and cleaned up after. While most of us are hanging out from some down time after what has been a tumultuous year, and for most of us that’s an understatement, let’s not forget all those who are going to be ensuring we get to have a relaxing and great time with our family and friends over the holidays. Hospitality workers are the most visible group but there is a huge number of people who will keep the town running smoothly including those who work in council, our essential workers and, of course, our volunteers who’ve already done so much this year. Our medical professionals, our charities and our emergency services have been at the front line since March and at this time of the year will go into overdrive. Thank you for your service. You have been through so much already and you are a dedicated bunch of people. While we tuck into our Christmas ham, mince pies and pudding, we will give thanks and remember you, our volunteers, emergency services, council and essential workers who have and are doing such an outstanding job of looking after us all. Thank you from all of us at The Lakes Weekly—you are legends!! Locally it’s going to become crazy busy in the area. That puts enormous pressure on our roads, which will become manic and parking will be impossible again, supermarkets will be going flat out, cafes and restaurants overrun, and of course there are all the events. It’s likely to test our patience at times, especially as we have enjoyed getting our town back. But, let’s take a breath and remember how incredibly lucky we are, compared to just about everywhere else in the world. We get to enjoy the holiday with family and go to events in a socially Covid-free country. We are so fortunate. Christmas is a time to share goodwill with everyone and we get to do this in a remarkable place on earth. It doesn’t get better than that!! From everyone at the Lakes Weekly, the Queenstown App and JobFix, thank you for your support we truly wish you and your family a very very Merry Christmas. The Directors and Staff of The Lakes Weekly.

You need to make a choice, you need to let others know and yet you don’t have all the information you need at hand, what do you do? A few weeks ago, I wrote about a process called The Coin Toss, which is a great way to get your gut feeling, you inner knowing to show up! Let’s say you try that, and still you don’t know. Basically, if you missed that article, you toss a coinheads its X choice and tails its Y, as the coin lands and you see which choice you must make, you will have a gut feeling, a knowing or even a hoping that it’s heads or tails as the coin spins in the air. In most cases this worked every time, however what do you do if you get no ‘feedback’? Here’s what to do and I have done this lots if times. Sarah and I were trying to plan to take our twin babies back to Europe to meet their family, they had to be born in New Zealand as Sarah was not fit to fly so our plans changed. We have no baby things with us in NZ, everything was in Portugal where we live so we had to rush around borrowing baby things left, right and centre. The boys were born in Invercargill, all was well, two healthy wee things doing what babies do, sleep & eat, then repeat. We tried to plan, we booked flights and changed them, we told family when we were due back and changed them, we tossed to coin and in the end we made a decision. We decided not to decide. WOW, this was so liberating so freeing, we released it and the universe took over.

HOLIDAY BIN COLLECTIONS Ho ho ho! There’s no kerbside recycling collections on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Your bins will be collected the next day, on Saturday. Blue or yellow bin? Sign up to find out by text or email at reminders.saveourstuff.co.nz

What emerged was a date, given to us my our obstetrician, she told us we needed to wait for after the vaccines, then we were safe to fly, as it turned out the timing was perfect. Sometime we just have to decide not to decide and get out of our own way and magic then happens. We have learnt a lot from this approach. It is different to doing nothing, it is taking action to not take action. Then the flow starts and plans unfold. Give it a go, you will be amazed.

QLDC Christmas office hours Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the team at QLDC. Our offices are closed from 3pm on 24 December until 5 January. Anything urgent can still be reported 24/7 by phoning 03 441 0499.

Summer alcohol ban A 24 hour alcohol ban applies in Queenstown’s CBD between 24 December and 6 January. If you’re planning a family picnic or catch up with friends that includes a drink or two in a public place, please follow any signs in the area or check the maps on the QLDC website first. Nobody wants to end up paying $250 just for a couple of drinks.

Libraries Fines Amnesty Worried about your library fines mounting up? Queenstown Lakes Libraries has an easy way to clear outstanding fines and support your local community! For the month of December your local library will happily shelve fines in exchange for non-perishable food items, children’s books, toiletries and vouchers. Each item waives $5 and goods received go to Happiness House. It’s a win-win!

Snap, Send and Solve with QLDC If you spot an issue in the community you can now raise it with Council using an app on your phone called Snap Send Solve. The app is a simple, free and fast way to send QLDC ‘Fix It’ requests, meaning the next time you spot a pesky water leak on the road outside your house or a fallen tree blocking a trail, snap it then send it and QLDC will solve it. You can download the Snap Send Solve app on Google Play and the Apple Store.

Arts+Culture Deep thinking sculpture for lakefront ‘Deep Thought’ has a temporary place on the lakefront. A new pop up sculpture is going to be installed on the shores of Lake Wakatipu by The Lakes District Arts Trust. The lights will be switched on the new sculpture - which was inspired by art, physics, mathematics, light and technology – toward the middle of January. The temporary art installation by the American Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone (HYBYCOZO), called ‘Deep Thought’, will remain in position on the lakefront for six weeks. The artwork was organised by the Lakes District Arts Trust and the LUMA Southern Light Project, and was brought to New Zealand by Vesica - a collaboration of artists. The trust was introduced to HYBYCOZO’s work during the alert level four lockdown, and trustees were taken by its unique beauty and inspired by its title. “This art installation will leave you feeling a sense of wonder and joy - a sense of amazement at the form, light and shadow,” the trustees said in a statement. “It is the artists’ hope that the viewer will interact with the sculpture with a sense of curiosity and wonder about the geometry of the shape and the meaning of the pattern. “We hope in the public sphere, our installation feels like a place of refuge and a place to find some peace in a busy environment.” Trustee Chris Hadfield, said the interactive sculpture - which people can walk inside - is intended to be a place for introspection.“It’s a contemplative space - it seems to have got people thinking.”

What’s On A new body of work Sonia has been painting for 18 years and her most recent exhibition was a solo show in 2017, ‘State of [a] dress’, in New York City. In her previous body of work, Sonia used clothing as her canvas. Now, she is taking a deep look inside, and asking the question: What happens when we shed that skin? “My clothing artworks captured the essence of the soul that inhabited the clothing, now I am asking the questions and looking inside of ourselves, what happens when we shed that skin? All our experiences, past lives, friendships, adventures, joys, wounds, loves and losses…all combine together inside of us, but often we charge around through life and don’t tap into the depths of our own soul, to be still enough to explore and discover the power that resides in each of us. My new body of work is comparing these human experiences to that of a geode…discovering the wonder, light and strength that is deep inside of us when we get cracked open. Where: Lipsky and Sons, 3 Mountain View Drive, Wanaka. When: On now and running until January

After finishing a six week period in Wanaka, ‘Deep Thought’ will be moving to Queenstown’s lakefront in front of Marine Parade for a further six weeks from mid January. The artwork is available for purchase from Artbay Gallery. Ten per cent of revenue from a sale would be donated to the Lakes District Arts Trust. The HYBYCOZO sculptors live in San Francisco, but ‘Deep Thought’ was made in New Zealand. Over the past few years, HYBYCOZO work has appeared in civic installations in Singapore and Dubai and exhibitions at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery.

Further disruption for Camp Street after prehistoric material discovered. The discovery of prehistoric timber 20 metres underground in Queenstown CBD will cause significant disruption for businesses over the coming months. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is installing a major new 870m wastewater pipe under town centre roads, including Camp Street. Contractors planned to use a method called ‘horizontal directional drilling’, but they have had to change their plans after encountering unexpected materials. They’ll use traditional open-cut trenches instead. QLDC Chief Engineer Ulrich Glasner says: “While we spent considerable time and effort completing geotech investigations along the pipeline route to determine the suitability of horizontal directional drilling, we hit what is likely to be prehistoric timber 20 metres underground. “That’s twice the height of the Naylor Love scaffolding in town at the moment [at O’Connells Mall], so it’s a long way down. “The material is currently being tested to determine its origins. “Due to this and following further technical assessments it has been agreed that the most appropriate approach is to complete the pipe installation using traditional open-cut trenches.” QLDC General Manager Property and Infrastructure Peter Hansby said the new approach will cause more disruption than originally planned. The project team will be putting significant effort into working with residents and businesses along the route, talking through their concerns, mitigation efforts and how to maintain access. “We very much have an open door policy and the contractors will be working hard to maintain a close working relationship with those affected throughout the project,” Hansby says. “The team will be out talking to affected residents and businesses in the lead up to Christmas and the intention is to start further service location works later in January 2021.” The ‘Plan B’ has already been designed and consented. “Horizontal directional drilling is widely used throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and the rest of the world and we were confident that our early investigations had indicated appropriate conditions,” Hansby adds. “However, with projects such as this there is always a risk that we could encounter challenging ground conditions and it was important that we put the time and effort into planning upfront so that we could quickly change track if required. “The new approach results in a number of changes to the project, including a new pipe alignment and timings for construction. “It also provides opportunities to integrate with other projects underway or planned such as the town centre street upgrades and upgrades at the Te Kararo Queenstown Gardens.” In the meantime, construction of a new Pump Station at the Recreation Ground is mostly complete and 900m of new wastewater pipe has been installed along Park Street.

CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz

I’m writing this from Christchurch where I’ve been all week while my lazy mother lounges around in hospital after a hip replacement. It’s been fun having a city break, but the funniest bit was her preadmission meeting. They bang on a lot about the operation and blood tests and other not very interesting things, but then on the VERY last page of the info book, there are lots of rude (and rather amateurish) drawings of people busily bonking. They’re the official positions for having a cracking good time after the op. I was astonished to think that sex would be on anyone’s mind after major surgery. It could be a new cure for a lacklustre sex life - mmm, so your wife has lost interest in it, has she? have you considered a hip transplant for her?

Christchurch is so lucky to have The Piano Art and Music Centre - it’s a stunning building and it would be so fabulous to have something like it in the Wakatipu. It’s got great acoustics and seats 325 , plus a smaller theatre that seats 60 and other smaller spaces and changing rooms and a bar and grrr….I’m so jealous! I went to a concert being put on there by the Cathedral Choristers - mainly to have another good look at the building, but it is nearly Christmas, and there’s absolutely nothing I like more about Christmas than a tiny, angelic chorister singing carols. I wasn’t disappointed - the choir was fabulous and the only sad note about the performance was the tiny audience, and the people refusing to give a donation - they didn’t want to support the cathedral in any way, but would have been very happy to make a donation to the choir. The whole Piano Centre cost $16 million to build in 2016 and this was the first time I’d ever been at an event there with empty seats. They could have ten of these centres for the price of fixing the cathedral which was rarely ever full. Sometimes it’s hard to understand the logic. And it’s very hard to understand the logic of DOC now objecting to the application for the trail from Gibbston to Bannockburn after all the support that has been given by the community. DOC does fabulous work but every now and again they make weird decisions. Many years ago my father managed to persuade them not to close Pig and Pigeon Island to the public - it was only going to be accessible by DOC staff. Lucky them, but not so lucky for anyone else. It’s illogical to say that the trail should only be for walkers, not bikers - the whole point of this great trails network is that it links all our communities by bike, so that fewer cars are being used. I certainly won’t be walking from Gibbston to Bannockburn very often and I can’t imagine anyone else would either. If they have to make some trails for walkers only, why not choose some of the trails that ARE used by lots of walkers, like Lake Hayes or Tobins Track? Get as much rest as you can over Christmas as January 9th is looming - sleepless nights as keen bakers of custard square and sausage creators get ready for the vicious competition at the Lake Hayes Show - download the schedule and roll up your sleeves. This time next week, the whole palaver of Christmas will be over and the only present I wanted has already been promised - the trans Tasman bubble. It’s been a very long year missing our families overseas and if there’s one thing COVID has taught us, it’s that our families and friends are the most important thing in the world. Happy Christmas, everyone !!

COMMUNITY NOTES The Kingston Christmas Party was a hit. What’s on? Not reindeers but a firetruck brought Santa, an elf and bags full of presents to Kingston recently. More than 50 children came to the Christmas Party prepared for them by the local community. Kingston Community Association organised an event for kids that united the whole town. The old train station, now turned into a cafe&bar from the very morning was crowded with locals waiting for Santa. Soon after the big Treasure Hunt Kingston’s Fire Brigade truck, with Santa on board, arrived. After unwrapping the gifts and having ice creams children with their parents had an opportunity to travel to the past visiting the old Kingston Flyer. The steam train changed it’s look and for one day became Thomas the Tank Engine. With only 350 residents Kingston is one of the least populated places in the Wakatipu basin. More than 100 years ago Kingston was a growing town, with multiple hotels, bars and banks. A hub for gold miners and for moving goods North-South under the power of steam via the Kingston Flyer and TSS Earnslaw. After the gold rush and construction of the road connecting Kingston and Queenstown, the population reduced and Kingston slowly turned into a holiday town visited from time to time by crib owners, with a small amount of permanent residents. The situation is changing again. Each year the number of permanent residents is growing, creating a bigger and stronger community. More and more young families are moving to Kingston, transforming it from a sleepy village to a vibrant place full of kids. ‘It’s like in the good ol’ days, people spending time together’ I heard from the oldest residents during the Christmas Party. That was true, we were together, united for that one day. 26 people, 5 local organizations and businesses were involved into making this day happen. Kingstonians didn’t fail and showed up to the event even though the weather wasn’t perfect and maybe it would have been easier to stay at home, sheltered from the strong wind that was blowing that day.

Big changes for migrant workers as visas extended to address labour uncertainties

NE W S F R O M

The government is extending the visas of many migrant workers to ease labour shortfalls. As part of a package announced Sunday, working holiday and employer-assisted work visas will be pushed forward six months. A 12-month stand-down period for low-paid Essential Skills visa holders working in New Zealand for three years will also be put on hold until January 2022. •This story was first published by RNZ. The Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said the changes would help businesses retain migrant workforces. “With the labour market outlook being more optimistic, we are implementing a range of changes to ensure the migrant workforce already in New Zealand can supplement employers’ efforts to recruit New Zealanders who have lost jobs due to COVID,” Faafoi said. “The visa setting changes will run well into 2021, providing certainty for employers and workers. “We will continue to watch closely how the labour market develops and whether further extensions are needed.” He said there were about 192,000 migrant workers in New Zealand, but without the changes the numbers would fall as visas expired and border restrictions meant limited numbers of new workers were able to come into the country.

Spend the summer in Cromwell By Marion Low, Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group Long, hot days, balmy evenings, and blue skies as far as the eye can see – that’s what you can expect of summer in Cromwell. Besides lazing by the lake, taking the bike along the many tracks in and around town, and sampling wine and fruit from the region, there is plenty of fun events to get stuck into this time of year.

Sporting events The last three events of the Subway Cromwell Summer Series happen in quick succession at the end of December and the beginning of January. First up is the XS Storage Bannockburn MTB Classic on 30 December, offering four different rides to cater to all levels of fitness. The next event, The Gate Lake Dunstan Triathlon and Duathlon, will see the big guns come out to start the year off on a high note on Saturday, 2 January. The series rounds off with the Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge on 9 January. This is one of the last bunch rides in New Zealand and makes for a fantastic challenge.

But he said employers would still have to prove no New Zealanders were available before hiring new migrant workers.

Markets

The changes are:

We have the privilege of celebrating the festive season during summer too, and there are many opportunities to get amongst it! The Cromwell Farmers’ and Crafts Market is on every Sunday between 9 and 1 in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct – the ideal spot to get some Christmas shopping done. There is also the Cromwell Food Produce Market held outside The Gate every Thursday where you can get lovely fresh produce or a home-made treat.

• Employer-assisted work visa holders (and their partners and dependent children) who have a job and whose visas are expiring from January to July 2021 will have their visas automatically extended by another six months. • The stand-down period, during which low-paid Essential Skills visa holders have to leave New Zealand, will be postponed until January 2022. The stand-down period means that Essential Skills visa holders earning less than the median wage (currently $25.50) must leave New Zealand for 12 months after having worked here for three years before they can return. • Immigration New Zealand will continue to use the 2019 median wage of $25.50 per hour for immigration settings until at least July 2021 at which point the median wage will rise to $27 per hour. • Working Holiday visas will be extended for six months, and restrictions will be relaxed on the maximum duration of work permitted, allowing Working Holiday visa holders to continue working in any industry they choose (including horticulture and wine sector roles). • Working Holiday makers will no longer be transferred onto a Supplementary Seasonal Employer work visa when their working holiday visa expires. Migrants already on an SSE visa will be able to continue working for the horticulture and wine sectors, or apply for an Essential Skills visa if they find alternative qualifying work.

Feasts and festivals On Sunday, 27 December the annual Cherry Festival and National Cherry Stone Spitting Competition will once again be held on the McNulty Lawn in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Besides the Cherry Stone Spitting which always draws a large crowd (and makes for entertaining photos!) the Cherry Festival will also feature live music and a cherry-pie eating competition Another great event to put on the calendar is the Cromwell Wine and Food Festival on 2 January 2021, visitors can relax on the beautiful sheltered garden of the McNulty House and enjoy live entertainment from local musicians, great food and wine.

LAST TRUE SPECTACLE IN AUTO RACING

™

H I R E

By Ross Lindsay

Watching a sprint car race in the 1970s, Formula 1 legend Jackie Stewart commented that… ”It is the last true spectacle left in auto racing.” Over forty years later, it’s likely Sir Jackie would still be blown away by these V8 powered methanol fuelled 800 to 900 horse power ‘winged demons’ as they roar and snarl, slip and slide on Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway’s 500 metre clay track. And the best news is that after the Hydraulink War of the Wings round on Wednesday, December 30, they’ll be back at Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway on Good Friday, April 2 for the final of this South Island based series. For any person or a family who has never been to speedway, sprint cars are the fastest, reaching around 160kph on the short straights between the four corners of Cromwell’s speedway track. As well as the War of the Wings, sprint cars will be racing in the King of Cromwell series, with round 3 on January 1 and round 4 on January 9. Further adding to reasons for making the picturesque drive from Wakatipu to Cromwell is the stockcar class that will be on the Heavy Trax Hire Central Motor Speedway track at the December 30, January 1 and January 9 meetings. These heavyweights are custom built tuff for rough and tumble, and weighing in at 1500 kg with up to 4 litres of motor up front, pack a loud, metal-crunching punch. But don’t worry, drivers are well protected. Adding to metal mayhem at the January 9 meeting will be street stocks. The ‘bovver boys of speedway’ this class is based on big family saloons suitably strengthened for argy-bargy. Other classes racing at all three meetings include open wheel sixshooters, youth ministocks, productions, super saloons and saloons.

Have a Merry Sustainable Christmas Crank the Bublé and spend some time this week getting crafty with your pals. Here’s a few ideas to help you really sleigh the Christmas game this year:

Crackers. Fill toilet rolls tubes with your jokes and gifts, add a

cracker snap, wrap in paper and gather the ends (you know what a cracker looks like) and tie with string or ribbon and hey presto!

Herb garland. Grab your favourite herbs and foliage and assemble into a chic garland style using thin florist wire (available in Spotlight). Hang from shelves, windows, mantlepieces, tables…

Rosemary mini wreaths. Create a circle with a sprig of rosemary (there’s loads growing around the district) and wind with some thin florist wire to secure it. Great as a present topper or name place. Ice cubes. Pop some herbs, fruits and berries into ice cube moulds to jazz up your festive drinks. Star anise, citrus rinds, cranberries, mint leaves, blueberries, raspberries all work well! Stuffing. Bread is the #1 food waste culprit, so save that stale bread and combine with onion, celery, garlic and herbs (sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano) to make a tasty tray of stuffing. Tree. Safely chop down a pesky wilding pine (then take to Wilding & Co in Dalefield when you’re done so they can turn it into essential oils!) or DIY with driftwood from the lakeside.

Macrame decorations. Upgrade your old baubles with a little rope and knot action. There are lots of ideas and how to guides online. An experience. Give the gift of an experience or adventure rather than buying something new. After all, we do live in a town full of them!

Stockings. Upcycle clothes, curtains or any fabric and material you have into stockings. Great for the classic Christmas Eve hanging or using as a bag to deliver a present in. Have fun crafting and have your elf a merry little Christmas!

Job Ads expansion slows in November. The number of positions advertised in Queenstown grew 6% in November over the October total, according to the latest JobFix survey released this week. The growth in roles advertised is slowing after 15% growth in both October and September. The rolling three months numbers till the end of November has seen a total of 1159 jobs available as compared with only 403 in the prior three months ended August. That however is small fry when compared to 2019 when JobFix posted 4173 roles. The inability of businesses to find staff and especially NZ staff has been recognised recently with council holding a second Jobs Fair in November and more recently the Government increasing the undersupply list for the region. Looking ahead, next year we are set to welcome our Australian ‘cousins’ once more which is likely to bring a wave of visitors to the region. It's expected most businesses will need to ramp up their staff numbers to meet the demand. This is going to take some time to achieve for most companies and as a result we are forecasting the growth in recruitment to continue into the new year.
