Our region is about to feel the influx of the holiday crowds as we temporarily become the second and fourth largest cities in the South Island with more than 100,000 people in Queenstown on any given day and 80,000 in Wanaka. That’s bigger than Dunedin and Invercargill. This is a huge number of people that need to be accommodated, entertained, fed, watered and then cleaned up after. While most of us enjoy some down time, relaxing and enjoying our stunning landscapes and the amazing activities that the region has to offer, let’s not forget all those who do have to work over this period to ensure the rest of us get to have a great time during the holidays. Hospitality workers are the most visible group, but there’s also a large number of people who work in council, essential services or volunteer behind the scenes to make sure our town runs smoothly during the festive period. From medical professionals to our volunteer fire brigade and those who assist local charities over what can be a stressful time of year, there’s a dedicated bunch who will be kept busy making sure everyone has a safe and memorable Christmas and New Year. While you tuck into the Christmas ham and pudding (preferably with brandy butter), don’t forget to think of all the volunteers who are so essential to our well-being and say a quick thank you! If you’re one of the hard-working group working this festival season: thank you from all of us at the Lakes Weekly for your service. You are legends! We cannot escape; it’s a crazy busy period in town, which puts a lot of pressure on our resources – the roads will be even more manic, the parking impossible, the lines in the supermarket will be insane and of course there are events everywhere to attend. Queenstown has been a popular Christmas destination for many years – there’s no escaping that. It’s very likely to test our patience, our innate kindness and our welcoming spirit. But remember that Christmas is a time to share goodwill, reflect and spend time with family or friends and we’re lucky to spend it in such a wonderful place. From the Directors, management and the whole team at the Lakes Weekly, LWBTV and JobFix thank you for your contributions, your enthusiastic feedback and support. From our family, we wish you and your family a very merry Christmas.

While some are winding down for a welldeserved break, we’re winding up for a busy summer travel season ahead. It certainly feels like Christmas in the terminal with the decorations up and our team sporting elf ears and Santa hats! We also just had our first Christmas Community Day which was loads of fun and supported “Let’s Eat”, a great local charity which converts surplus supermarket food into meals for those in need. Providing a safe, friendly and memorable experience is our aim every day and over the past 12 months we’ve continued to invest in improving the customer experience from “park-to-plane”. New flight information display screens, internal and external signage, landscaping and parking technology have been introduced or upgraded to assist our customers move through and enjoy the airport. Various airfield and terminal improvement projects are also well progressed. These include the new international/domestic departure swing lounge, expanded space for border agency staff and customer processing, and a full resurfacing of the aircraft parking area using sustainable asphalt (recycled beer bottles and used toner cartridges included!). As far as long-term planning goes, we continue to be focused on facilitating sustainable growth in the Southern Lakes region over the next 30 years. Key to that will be our ongoing work on the master plans for both Queenstown and Wanaka airports. Once developed, the master plans will provide for connected and complementary aviation centres to support the growth of the communities and businesses across the region. We’ve learned a lot from our engagement with the communities we serve over the past year and look forward to continuing that engagement as we progress our long-term planning initiatives in the year ahead. I’d like to encourage each of you to work with us to help shape the exciting future of both airports. No doubt many of you will be moving around the country by air and road over the holiday season and we’re hopeful that you all have a safe and stress-free travel experience. Please check out our handy travel tips online at www.queenstownairport.co.nz. From all of us at Queenstown and Wanaka airports, we wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a terrific New Year.

Brickbats and Bouquets

The Whinge I do love a good whinge, and have been a participant in your whinge page as a reader and contributor. But I think it is time you put some balance back in your publication. With the Brickbats you really need some Bouquets. I mean it is not all bad around here! Sure there is a lot to fix, and stupidity is easily spotted, but occasionally we should also notice some of the more positive things too. Now I don’t want ironic or sarcastic false positives, those cheap shots are too easy to create and are really just whinges in disguise. I mean some actual compliments. Like how I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get the ½ price gondola concession again this year. Good move. Sorry for those who didn’t know but good on those local businesses like Skyline and the Earnslaw that offer great season deals.

Not that I really want to point to business or financial affairs, they can blow their own trumpets, so how about we start with something that really goes unrecognised - like how well our street cleaning really responds to the nightly deluge that afflicts our environment. I walk the streets a lot (with my dog) and notice the broken glass, discarded junk food etc., and I have to say that it disappears pretty damn quickly. So a big shout out to those invisible Trojans. What say you? Have you got a positive thought needing a place to go. Why don’t we hear some of the other side, to go with our whinges. Come on LWB – give us a spot.

The Bright Side of Life

Response from LWB It seems that everyone loves a whinge and not nearly as many love a bouquet, well at least putting pen to paper (or Facebook). We will get a great call out maybe once a month and every time we get one we will always print it because like you we LOVE to give a shout out! We have discussed it many times and will definitely give it the space and even create a

section for bouguets as long as there are some even one a week that we can publish so come on Queenstown tell us what you love, who deserves a call out and what organisations have been amazing. We love a challenge, so thank you for your glorious ‘whinge’ and we’ll make it a NY resolution to give it a red hot go!!!.

Pedestrian Lives Matter! As I’m walking to work, I see a cargo truck speeding down the road, turning the corner from Rees St. to Beach St. (ironically right outside the building with Lakes Weekly). It purposely pulls up less than a meter away from a pedestrian crossing the road, and honks for what felt like a full minute! This driver is mad!!

I’ve seen crazy drivers on this corner countless times! They need to realise the obvious, that pedestrians don’t move as quickly as cars do, so they need to take care when turning this blind corner right in the middle of town where it should be obvious that there will always be people crossing the road.

Pedestrians obviously cannot see what is coming for them from Rees St. when they are trying to cross Beach St. I recall a few months ago, I was guiding a young child across that same corner, and a driver angrily mouths at me behind closed windows, “Get out of the street!!!”

We need to get zebra crossing there or something!, because one day, someone is going to get hurt, if not killed!!

Action Needed

Silent Night I would like to remind those people who have to start screaming at each other and sing drunken songs until 4am in the morning that some people have to work 12 to 14 hour days during the holiday period, and they need some sleep.

So think of others and be a bit more considerate this time of the year, because not everyone is on holiday.

Facebook/Website Comments Facebook/Website Comments Editorial – 680 I agree Sam.....trouble is I can name two very big business here that dont see it your way, and guess what, they get away with it....they dont care about staff turnover.... PSYCO QT I-Site Love – 680 And they don’t block the footpath with chalkboard boards full of misleading information and spelling errors. THE I Sites have people that genuinely know and have experinced what they are suggesting, rather than a bunch of touts who are such recent arrivals their backpacks are under the front desk of the pop up shops that litter the CBD. Not A HAPPY TRAVELER Copthorne DAILY Illegal Parking! – 680 Fun fact 1) there is a sign right there that says ‘no large vehicle parking’ or something like that; Fun fact 2) that is the road police vehicles drive through all the time and I’ve seen them harassing tourist drivers but never seen they do something about the buses; Not-so-fun fact: couple days ago I saw a Chinese girl almost get hit by a UTE as she was walking towards the bus looking at her phone. Your Name Here Editorial – 680 Thank you Mr Hazeldine for great editorial comment. It was so refreshing to read and almost made me think that there is a hope! I have been living and working in Queenstown for more than a deade and really sick of some of service business employers for taking advantage of us employees. If the companies truly think if they want to improve their business, pay your staff more to show they are worth to the company they are working for. Its just too common practice that most of companies I have worked for in Queenstown are good with staff who are working for management level and they pay as little amount as possible for lower level of workers. Do they actualy realise that us lower level employees are the fondation and face of the company? I really hope all the service business owners read Mr Hazeldine’s comment and learn from it. (at least something to ponder...) Long Term Staff

Meri Kirihimete and welcome to another stunning festive season in the Queenstown Lakes. Whatever your plans, I hope that spending some quality time with friends and family is included and that you have the chance to reflect on 2018 and reset your goals for the year ahead. For me, it’s been a great year and I’ve been delighted to see the district thriving in the face of some city scale challenges. Growth has been a really big issue but what’s been really encouraging when working through our strategies, is the willingness of our community to get involved. We had a great response to our Ten Year Plan, have seen committed and engaged community associations advocating throughout the year and the quality of representation around the table at Council table is very high. If you haven’t had a look yet, our Vision Beyond 2050 work - entitled 'A Unique Place. An Inspiring Future - He Wāhi Tūhāhā. He Āmua Whakaohooho’ - presents a series of vision statements and is intended to define what we hope for, hear or experience in day-to-day life in the Lakes District beyond the year 2050. It makes for some excellent holiday reading and I’d strongly encourage you to share your thoughts with us after reading it. Head over to the Council website for a link to the document and information on how to have your say. To everyone who invited Karen and I to a community event this year, thank you very much. I’ve had the pleasure of opening a playground, a walkway, a rainbow crossing, the Winter Festival and Winter Games, some fantastic new hotels, Polyfest, a number of new businesses, many conferences, several sporting events, and even a new cemetery. And, I’ve been delighted to participate in over a dozen citizenship ceremonies. All of these events showcase the colour and uniqueness of our special corner of the world. It makes me immensely proud of our home and its tangata whenua to be involved. Merry Christmas everyone and have a safe and happy new year!

MP for Clutha-Southland Where Have The Past 12 Months Gone? It’s now only one week until Christmas and I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for the assistance you have given me this year. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to visit me in my office. I have enjoyed helping many of you, and as I often say, I promise to listen to your concerns and promise to try my hardest for you. This time of year is about reflecting on the year that has been and celebrating with family and friends. We’ve had some good news stories in the area this year and I thank each and every one of you who has supported these fantastic causes. One of the most memorable achievements of the year was when our much-loved Queenstown family Sam Wijerathne and Dinesha Amarasinghe were granted residency recently. When I first met the family last year I promised them I would do everything I could to gain them residency, which is why I organised the protest march late last year, and lobbied the Minister, meeting with him personally to explain the family’s situation. I want to thank the Queenstown community, Tam Schurmann, from Baskets of Blessings and the St Johns Presbyterian Church for their support. I have assisted over 500 constituent cases in Queenstown this year, all of which I’ve done my best to assist. On that note, I’d like to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas period and an enjoyable New Year. I’ll be back advocating for you in 2019. Authorised by Hamish Walker MP, 15 Main St, Gore.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday….. With the holiday period in full swing Police would like to remind everyone that with the holidays comes an influx of visitors to our town for the summer festivities. If you are visiting Queenstown, welcome, we hope you have a great time. We encourage locals and visitors alike to look after your mates and have plans in place to make sure you and your wider whanau and friends have a safe and fun time. Drink responsibly, this isn’t about stopping people from enjoying a beer with mates. It’s about people taking responsibility for their own safety and looking out for each other. Arrive and leave social gatherings as a group. Excessive drinking can affect your decision-making, increasing your risk of harm or ending up in hospital. If you are lucky enough to be heading away to enjoy the sunshine, allow yourself plenty of time for your journey, and secure your property. Please look out for one another, and let Police know if anything or anyone looks out of place. As for the busy roads our message is clear; don’t drive distracted, stay within your own lane, buckle up, watch your speed, and never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or fatigue. If you are stopped by one of our staff on the roads please remember it’s because we want you and everyone else to be safe and feel safe! Don’t hesitate to call Police to report something out of the ordinary. If you see a crime being committed or a suspicious person, call 111 to report it to Police immediately. Over the holiday period Queenstown Central Police Station is open 8.00am - 5.00pm Mon - Fri; 9.00am - 5.00pm Sat – Sun. Our phone number is (03) 441 1600. Enjoy the holidays, be patient on the roads and keep an eye out for our tamariki!

QLDC releases

Quality of Life Survey Results

As a district, we’ve grown fast. There are more people, more tourists, more traffic, more everything. But what impact has this had on us all? Earlier this year, the Queenstown Lakes District Council commissioned research into the quality of life in our district. QLDC has conducted research into residents’ and ratepayers’ satisfaction with Council services since 1995, but this is the first time the research has looked into the overall quality of life for those who live and pay rates into the region. The results were released last Friday (14th December 2018). The research received QLDC’s highest-ever response rate; 1960 residents and ratepayers answered questions about a range of subjects including growth, safety, income, community connections and personal resilience. The respondents were randomly selected from the electoral role and others responded via social media links.

Here’s a summary of the results:

Our Community - The region is certainly international; 40% were born outside of New Zealand, but many had lived in the region for a long time – 19% of respondents had lived in the region for 5 – 10 years and 47% had lived in the region for 10 years or more. - The results showed that the area is not immune to an equality gap and that money is a big differentiator. Notably, females (16%), those aged 18-29 (28%) or 65+ (23%), and those who have lived in the district for less than a year (32%) are more likely to indicate their household income is less than $40,000.

Services and Facilities - The region really enjoys its parks, reserves and gardens – 21% say they use them frequently and 32% say they use trails, walkways and cycleways on a daily basis. - We’re also an arty bunch, 66% of respondents had recently participated in or attended an art or cultural event in the district. However, 43% say they’d like to see stronger celebration of Tangata Whenua and Māori culture.

Preparedness and safety - In the event of a disaster, only 45% say they are prepared. Those most prepared were male residents who’ve lived in the area for more than 10 years and live in Glenorchy. - In terms of safety, 49% or residents identify illegal freedom camping as a significant problem and 41% say dangerous driving is an issue. Notably, 32% used the comments section to voice concerns about tourists and overseas drivers. - 36% of residents from the Frankton area identified aviation noise as an issue.

Perceptions of Council - The region’s perception of the council is generally positive, however there was some disparity between the tick-box section and the comments section. While 58% said they were satisfied with the opportunity to have their say, 18% of the comments in the open text section indicated that residents don’t feel as though Council listens. - 10% said they thought there was too much growth and development being allowed in the region and 7% said there was too much focus on Queenstown.

Our Environment - The region has an interest in taking care of our environment with 40% saying they had a strong interest, 83% also said they bought products with less packaging, 55% grow their own veggies or keep livestock like chickens and 38% had made efforts to make their home more environmentally friendly. - The community clearly expects more effort from businesses and council, with 85% saying they agree or strongly agree that businesses are responsible for waste reduction in the region and 81% saying that Council is responsible. 61% indicated that their household does everything it can to reduce waste.

Belonging - Despite age-old arguments over what constitutes a ‘local’, in this survey, 89% said they considered themselves a local. - Interestingly, 18% said they weren’t sure if they’d stay in the district and 68% of those thinking of leaving said it was because they thought their lifestyle would be better elsewhere. 19% said they may leave because of housing unaffordability. - Unsurprisingly, the community has a strong sense of pride and most thought that the district’s multi-cultural nature made it a better place to live. - Mental Health is an area of interest as 25% of the respondents had accessed Mental Health services in the last twelve months, which is much higher than expected.

Transport - A third of residents say they walk on a daily basis as an alternative to using a car. Those who have lived in the district less than a year were more likely to walk (45%) or use the bus (15%) on a daily basis. - In terms of public transport perceptions, 58% agree it is safe, 60% agree it is affordable, and 46% agree it is accessible.

Quality of Life - Overall, cost of living (32%), transport (22%), and growth and development (20%) are main areas where residents would like to see improvements. 39% indicated that the Council has a key role in managing growth and development in the region. - Most residents are stoked with their quality of life here – 79% rated it as good or extremely good.

Queenstown Cromwell Wanaka

Cromwell is turning on the heat this December and January with plenty of outdoor events and activities. Fun for the family The holidays offer many festivals and markets for families to enjoy. On Sunday, 30 December, the annual Cherry Festival and National Cherry Stone Spitting Competition will be held on the McNulty Lawn in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. This fun event will have live music, a cherry bake-off, cherry-pie eating competition, plenty of entertainment for the kids, and a new Win it in a Minute Family Challenge. On 5 January 2019, visitors can relax and enjoy live entertainment from local musicians, great food and wine in a beautiful setting amongst historic stone buildings on the edge of Lake Dunstan. And as always, visitors to Cromwell will be able to savour the delicious fruit the region is renowned for. Sporting events The last three events of the Subway Cromwell Summer Series are happening in quick succession at the end of December and the beginning of January. First up is the XS Storage Bannockburn MTB Classic on 30 December, offering four different rides to cater to all levels of fitness. The next event, The Gate Lake Dunstan Triathlon and Duathlon, is traditionally when the big guns come out, but the 2019 event also offers a new challenge. Businesses are invited to enter teams of two or three into the Corporate Challenge for the ultimate bragging rights. The series rounds off with the Henry’s Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge - one of the last bunch rides in New Zealand.

A funky Queenstown-based band will be one of the main acts at this year’s inaugural Bass Camp festival (30th Dec – 2nd Jan). Turtle Funk will be the main act on 30th December at the new festival, which is located in native bush near Dipton. Bass Camp festival will include three nights of bands, DJs, fire performers and workshops. The festival will be one of Turtle Funk’s first major gigs outside of Queenstown. The band started up in 2015 and have quickly become popular in the region with their international mix of old school funk music with elements of jazz. Taking inspiration from Latin to Motown, Nile Rodgers’ Chic to Daft Punk, the band is as eclectic and as international as the town itself. Turtle Funk is headed by Welshman Ash Rogers and Je Marco, who’s from Brazil. The pair met at an open mic night in Surreal and quickly realised they were “musical brothers” – with near-matching turtle tattoos and an addiction to funk. Ash says the band are ready to move to the next level and as well as Bass Camp, they’ll be performing at the infamous Fat Eddie’s jazz bar in Christchurch and have a summer South Island tour in the pipeline. “It’s super exciting,” says Ash. “December is a really busy time of year for us, practicing, writing and playing. At Bass Camp, we’ll be playing in a field in the middle of nowhere with four to seven instrumentalists, including two backing singers and maybe a saxophone, it’s going to be great.” The duo has recently released singles from their first EP, ‘Funky Fresh’, with a brand new track called ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, set to be released in the new year on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon “and all the other socialtype platforms.” “It’s a classic funk song,” says Ash. “Je and I have been making music together for three years now; we bounce off each other and have a really clear idea of our sound.” The EP will have four original tracks and Turtle Funk promise it’ll be “funkiest thing to come out of New Zealand since Supergroove.”

22nd, 23rd & 24th December, 5 - 11pm Fear Factory, 54 Shotover Street Tickets $40 Adults*.
