At Sherwood, we cherish music for the power it has to bring people together and build community. We believe that a vibrant arts and cultural scene has a pivotal role to play in continuing to make Queenstown a great place to live and visit. We’ve been bringing touring New Zealand and International musicians to Queenstown since we opened in 2014 including local and international icons such as The Chills, Don McGlashan, Dave Dobbyn, Kurt Vile, Midge Ure, The Phoenix Foundation, Nadia Reid, Anika Moa, Shayne Carter and most recently Julia Deans. We have some big ones coming up including Silver Scroll nominees; The Beths next Saturday night, return visits from Don McGlashan and The Warratahs in October, and Brett Mckenzie’s Congress of Animals in November. Sadly, we’ve had an increasing number of comments from both patrons and touring artists, voicing their frustration at crowds talking through an artistic performance. This has got to the point where we have both bands and concert goers not wanting to return for gigs. As a result of poor behaviour during Julia Dean’s show in August, which saw Julia finishing the show with “I hope you enjoyed your $40 conversation”, we felt that in future, we had no option but to remove audience members from the show if they were seen to be compromising the experience for others. We acknowledge we have an important role to play in improving the culture around live music - especially in creating a respectful environment for people to perform or enjoy a show, and we’re working hard to improve this through production, audience, management and signage.

Due to the small size of our local population and the equally limited size of our venue, playing a show in Queenstown is only marginally viable at best for most touring bands. We try and make it worthwhile by covering accommodation, feeding artists well and creating an enjoyable moment on a national tour. Going to a gig needs to be fun – hell, it’s rock n’ roll after all! There’s plenty of great bars in Queenstown where people can have a drink and a natter, and at Sherwood, we’ve got great outdoor areas for those who don’t want to watch the show. All we ask is that if you’re at a show, you stop and listen. In the immortal words of Aretha Franklin this is simply a matter of ‘respect’ – and old fashioned manners. If people want to have a strong music, arts and cultural scene in Queenstown then they’ve got to support it by showing artists and their fellow audience members the respect they deserve. If between us we can acheive that - then artists will continue to want to tour here and we can continue to invest in building a community through arts and music. Sam Chapman Sherwood Co-owner

Always A Second Class Citizen
Dear Xenophobes & Lakes Weekly, In response to Lakes Weekly’s publishing of the comment by MR GREENY, “We could do with another million Chinese here in Queenstown, and another half million Indian taxi drivers...”, and speaking of the Chinese and Indians as if they are vermin, I find myself compelled to share my first impression of the Lakes District nearly one year ago. To give you context, I will say I am of Asian descent but raised in the western world, and English is my first language. Arrowtown was my first stop as I was heading south. As I entered a shop, an employee made a beeline for me and sternly said, “No photos please.” And used the back of his hand to knock the phone I was holding, as I needed to keep time because I didn’t have my watch on me. I replied, “I’m not.” “No photos... PLEASE,” he said. I walked out immediately and wondered what just happened and if I was inappropriate somehow for deserving that treatment.
And of course, as I made my way through Arrowtown, I found the Chinese settlement, and read of all the racism that occurred nearly 150 years ago, and disappointedly thought, looks like they didn’t come very far. I know racism has been discussed in many a whinge, but maybe we need to ask ourselves why the topic keeps coming up. And why does Lakes Weekly allow the publishing of comments that direct hate towards different races although they clearly say, to “avoid negative reference...to individuals” when writing your comments or whinges. Do yourselves and others a favor and do some self reflection, please. And maybe go have a history lesson at the Chinese settlement.

Pay For Your Parking Or Catch A Taxi As a Riverside Road resident we are seeing more and more airport parkers since the QLDC “airport straight” parking ban. We have had everything from people parking up on the curb for weeks at end to vehicles that have been parked where no one else can fit for a couple of months. The problem is that it is also leaving no space for the people that actually live on the road. A while ago myself and some of my close neighbours emailed QLDC asking if they could make Riverside Road a 48hour parking zone as Robertson Street (connected to same roundabout) has this and don’t seem to have the same issue we do. We figured this
shouldn’t affect the residents as they come and go daily but it would help with airport parkers - yet a reply on all front is still to be seen. Who knows - maybe a few other Riverside residents will see this and send in a request as well. My only fear is if it is ignored for too long it’s only a matter of time before it starts getting out of control and vehicles get abandoned there just like the airport straight.

Response from QLDC Thanks for raising this issue. QLDC is currently preparing a detailed business case relating to all public parking areas within Queenstown and Frankton. zones), how to manage parking at the waterfront and importantly to your whinge, the impact that SH6 parking removal has had on the Frankton residential area. This work is expected to be complete in December this year and a series of changes is likely to follow. FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS 2am Fireworks - 667 Yes we get the same thing on Queenstown Hill.... drunken idiots come home at 2am and decide to let off fireworks. I have spoken to QLDC, but they say that there is nothing they can do. I have said to them why dont they have a fireworks zone, say down on the Shotover Delta, where anyone can go and let off fireworks, but oh no, we cant have that, it sounds too easy. So we just have to put up with it, until someone gets killed. Nobody in the council gives a toss about small children or pets being terrified by these drunken louts, so we have to put up with it. Dont even bother the police with this sort of complaint, they are not interested.

Never Mind The Tourists, Watch Out For The Taxi Drivers - 667 It appears local commercial drivers have a special wavier from the council and the police in that they can park on yellow lines, footpaths and double without fear of being ticketed .I also wonder how of these commercial drivers have New Zealand drivers licences and appropiate endorsements?
OH NO And what about the bus drivers then? The Orbus/ Ritchie’s are bad enough but the tour coach drivers are a much bigger threat: one just has to drive to work early in the morning to see heaps of them double-parking, changing lanes without indication and generally driving like they own both lanes of the roads. And try to call the police or complain at the council to see what happens. Seriously give it a try.

If you are still in search of an adrenaline fix, Cromwell has enough to keep your blood pumping. Race around the Highlands track, go on a helicopter flight, take a ride on a jet boat, or get a crew together for a round of paintball. REASON 4 – The history Born out of the Otago gold rush, Cromwell has a rich history that spans over 150 years. Take a stroll through the historic buildings in the Heritage Precinct, visit the Cromwell Museum or discover more on the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trail. If you’ve got it right and there’s power enough upfront, you’ll be spinning your drive wheels to the delight of spectators at Central Motor Speedway in Cromwell this Saturday night (Sept 22).’ The ‘Burn, Baby, Burn’ Burnout and speedway racing meeting has been organised by Central Motor Speedway as another entertainment option for the thousands of visitors who come to the Alexandra Blossom Festival. “You could say that while the Blossom Festival is mostly about petals, this is pedals to the metal entertainment,’ says speedway promoter Jason Scott. ‘We’ve been especially careful not to get in the way of the official Blossom Festival programme by starting racing at 4.30pm with the burnout at 7pm. “As we all know, it’s quite a tradition for car lovers to make an annual pilgrimage to the Blossom Festival. With Sunday’s ‘Cars in the Park’, we predict that this year there will be a lot in town. Rather than use Alexandra roads to show off their mint 1973 Holden repowered with a Chevy short block V8 and risk being slapped with a fine and loss of license for more than two seconds of ‘sustained loss of traction’, surely it’s much better to spin their wheels on the skid pan at Central Motor Speedway. An added incentive is the $1000 dollar prize money. We’re pretty much open to any vehicle from specialised burnout cars through hot rods, classic American and Aussie sixes and V8’s to modern cars. To whet appetites some of our racecars will be on the back of big rigs in the Grand Procession and we’ll be handing out a good number of free $10.00 adult passes to those lining Centennial Avenue.
