Queenstown Trails Trust launches its annual fundraising appeal. As the autumn colours give way to winter snows, the Queenstown Trails Trust once again begins its month long annual ‘Friends of the Trust’ fundraiser in an effort to boost support and donations for a number of significant upcoming trail projects which will enhance the lifestyles of our community. This is a vital period of trail development for Queenstown, with growing pressure on roads from a rapidly expanding population – there has never been a more important time to provide alternate travel routes and transport modes for our community. With a sustainable and integrated trail network, we can encourage more ‘active transport’ for commuters as well as get kids back on bikes with a safe means of getting to the new high school in Frankton. Striving towards these goals is in line with the Trusts’ 10 year Plan to ‘connect our communities’ and sits well with the new Government Policy Statement for land transport to provide walking, cycling and mode-sharing opportunities for commuting. For this year’s annual appeal, we are asking for your help with several big projects on the horizon. We have set the audacious goal of $40,000 and are asking Queenstown’s community to turn their love for trails into donations. From as little as $20 for a single and $30 for a family membership, you can do your bit to help the trust develop more world class trails, connections and commuter routes, resulting in more locals, families and visitors enjoying our magnificent environment.

Funds raised during the 2018 annual appeal will go towards a significant realignment of the existing Queenstown Trail. Government funding via MBIE for large ‘Enhance and Expand’ projects such as this is contingent on sourcing at least 50% locally sourced co-share funding. The re-alignment will involve a new route along the foot of Coronet Peak linking Arrowtown to Arthurs Point, then on towards Frankton via the Lower Shotover Gorge and a pedestrian bridge at Tucker Beach. Ultimately, the Queenstown Trail itinerary will also include the new link from Jacks Point to Frankton and down the Kawarau, connecting seamlessly with the new Central-Otago link trail in Gibbston valley. I would love to encourage everyone who uses the Queenstown Trails network to sign up to our Friends of the Trust appeal today. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic recreational amenity on our doorstep, which is more importantly becoming a commuter opportunity for locals. We are counting on your support to complete the trail network and connect our communities with these vital new trails.
