The council’s panopticon plans . One of the more contentious topics in the Queenstown Lakes District’s Ten Year Plan is the proposal for a new council building and where it should be located. For almost three decades, consecutive councils have considered and designed an office building, but none have come to fruition. The current council operates from different buildings at opposing corners of the CBD. The council pays commercial rents in some places and owns its offices in others. A real hotchpotch of short term arrangements. The plan is to build one, large, unified council building on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Street. My initial reaction was anger – that Queenstown will likely lose more CBD parking and a valuable development space will be lost to a grey, drab authoritarian figure looming over a prominent corner of town. I imagined one-way windows and security cameras manned by parking wardens, and all the other tropes of modern dystopian fiction. Aside from the library, many residents don’t access the council buildings on a regular basis, particularly now that so much can be done online; so I questioned the need for a council building in town at all. Frankton is one of Queenstown’s fastest-growing areas and with more housing coupled with big city vices like Kmart arriving, it could make sense to put the council there too. However, talking to CBD business owners soon changed my mind. Long-term, stable jobs for residents are few and far between in the CBD, particularly outside of the hospitality industry. Council workers are a regular presence in town and from early morning coffees to lunchtime shop browsing, that regular presence is a regular income for some CBD businesses.

More importantly, some see the council presence in town as the final bastion of a strong local community in the CBD. By abandoning Queenstown’s original heart, the council would be sending a clear message: the CBD is a more active version of Disneyland; a temporary destination for visitors to empty their pockets, with bungy jumping instead of Mickey Mouse rides. There’s something about the dayto-day actions of residents which makes a town feel more like a community. In retail and hospitality, it’s the regular customers which bring a sense of belonging to an establishment. It’s a sense of regularity and familiarity which gives your hometown the ‘home’ feel and that’s something you can’t recreate with the transient nature of tourism. It’s no wonder the council have named the plans “Project Connect” – it’s about staying connected with the local community and maintaining a physical and practical local presence in the CBD. Provided the new council building isn’t designed around the principals of Bentham’s panopticon, perhaps having the new council building in the CBD isn’t too bad an idea after all.

Clamped!

Hello, I am a tourist, just arrived in Queenstown and I’ve already been fined twice for the same reason, both times unfairly. The first time, I arrived in town very late at night, almost morning but still dark. I parked the car and went for a walk just to move my legs after a long trip from Picton. Of course everything was closed so after I took few night pictures (Photography is my hobby and one of the reasons why I travel) I came back to the car and started to play a movie on my laptop while waiting for the sun to rise to take a few more shots. Soon after, maybe an hour or so, I felt my car wobbling, at the begin I was scared. I thought somebody was trying to brake in, then I took a look and there was a man, so I got out and confronted him. Turns out it was a parking officer who just fined me and clamped my car, quietly with no attempt to assess the situation with me. He fined me for $200 for freedom camping plus $200 for the clamp. I think this is crazy, I am not a camper, my car is a normal car - it doesn’t have sleeping facilities. I’m a tourist and I take pictures around the country because I simply love it. I am aware now after researching that people feel the big problem of freedom camping. I believe part of it is because bad examples are always highlighted more than good examples, and natural human instinct always tends to hate the foreigners and the unknown and the council is badly taking advantage of this public opinion to earn easy cash. The press has to take part and mitigate this hatred that is naturally fueled by bad news and local councils. It would not cost a penny for the officer to knock on the window and check up on the person inside the car and make him leave instead of presenting him with a fine with no grounds. This is the first place in the world and in New Zealand, where this has happened to me. On top of the fine, however, the clamp would be constructive on preventing the ongoing of the problem? It seems to me like a vicious act. As if it was not enough, a few days later, I was taking pictures of the sunrise on the mountains near Melbourne Street hoping some airplanes will pass by landing or departing from the airport.

When I came back to my car, again, it was fined for $200 for freedom camping! I was not even in the car! Why do they have the freedom of taking the decision of fining cars so recklessly? I tried to get in touch with the council and explain the situation, they don’t waste their time too much and they just answered my emails sayng that the council simply sees the act as freedom camping and they do not intend to waive the fees. I know legal advice would cost a fortune, lawyers are not famous to be a cheap option, but I am a stubborn person and I tried anyway. Unfortunately, even they just told me to give up because it would be “extremely” more expensive even in the case of success. I would rather give my money to people who actually work for it rather than give them (even if much less and in a easier way) to people who want to steal it. I feel really upset and sad about what is happening here to me, my situation is not easy. I struggle with my family in Italy, they have many problems. My father lives thanks to a machine, my mother can barely walk because of back problems. I’m here on the other side of the world, trying to help, living a normal life because in Italy financial crisis and political corruption are making the country hell. But I feel like people hate me here, why they are they so angry and full of hate for people that come to visit this beautiful country? I am not harming the environment in any way, I love it, and since I’m here in NZ I did nothing but spend my savings in rural areas for food, activities and accommodation. Yet, I feel people hate travellers, they yell at us, they throw us stuff, and councils like here in Queenstown are so aggressive that it seems like racism. It is really getting me down and I think I need help. Councils are making hundreds of thousands of dollars with these kind of fines, I don’t know how much of them rightfully. And with the money they get good press about it, and New Zealanders read that press and develop a racism instinct based not on personal experience, but on the facts told by some people who are lying to them in order to get their pockets full, in a very doubtfully legal way. As a local Arrowtowner, it will be a relief not to see the hoards of people and buses clogging our streets and contributing nothing but cigarette butts, litter, mud baths on our parks, overflowing toilets, aggression towards children unwilling to pose for photos, trespassing on private property and sputum on the street. I didn’t see a single shopping bag either so I’m not sure that the retailers got the spending boon they were promised.

Personally, I’d like to see fewer tour buses in Arrowtown at least but in the area generally. Not sure how this can be achieved exactly but our town is just getting hammered and it seems to be the bus tours who just use and abuse and treat us like some sort of fair ground attraction rather than a community of people.

I think we need to be more selective about the type of tourism we encourage in our precious region. And it doesn’t all have to be about the $$$. We played host to the most lovely couple

Though most are tourists yes - you know, the people responsible for you having a job one way or another there are all kinds of people doing this and I’ve seem as many Asians using the crossings in a queue-like formation as I’ve seen white peoples crossing everywhere else sometimes hauling huge suitcases along. To no fault of their own, if you just arrived to strange place without knowing the rules and no signage to let you know said rules you’ll just do whatever comes to mind. So this is mostly not their fault but the bus company’s that does not have signs inside their buses educating people in how/where to cross the streets but mostly the council’s fault for getting bus stops on both sides of the MAIN STREET IN TOWN and yet addressing no signage on where those people could cross safely. It’s yet another half-assed ‘improvement’ made by the council with no one thinking it through: don’t they have educated people with fancy degrees to think these things through before actually spending ratepayers money to build it? Absolutely EVERYTHING that’s done seems like a rush decision followed by everybody crossing their fingers and hoping it’ll stick... perhaps that’s the ‘kiwi way’ of doing things then blame it all on foreigners.

Celebrated hip hop and soul artist Ladi6 has announced an extensive headline tour of Aoteraoa in June and July, the Auckland-based singer's first run of shows since cancelling her 2017 Australasian tour due to vocal chord surgeries. She will be performing at Bunglaow in Queenstown 6 & 7 June.

We had the pleasure of firing a few questions at Ladi6 to find abit more about her tour and some insight about the woman herself. Here’s what she had to say Q: Who is your music idol and who most influences your music? My producer and husband is probably my main music idol and influence (true, but I’ll admit, boring.) But i do have many influences with my music, currently channeling a mix between trap, Balkan folk, 90s grunge and #Beychella.

Q: What’s the No 1 thing you take on tour with you? My make up bag & an excited attitude.

Q: You have been to Queenstown many times before. Where’s your favourite place to eat, drink & activity to do while you are in Queenstown? Eat: Ohh..I have many ..Madame Woos, Blue Kanu, Sherwood to name a few. Drink: Bungalow of course. Activity: My fave activity is outdoor adventure stuff like the Nevis Bungy, Water Rafting, hiking, the luge and aroha retreat!

Q: Have you any hidden talents/party tricks?music? I’m a ringer at beer pong.

Q: Tell us about your gig in Queenstown and what we have to look forward too? Great music, relaxed attitudes, dancing and party vibes!

Comprised of Dave ‘fingers of fire’ Parker, David ‘snapper’ Thiele and Ben ‘country boy” Collier, The Nukes have a reputation for reckless and riveting live shows where a fine blend of folk, bluegrass, reggae and post punk is caressed, coaxed and beaten out of three innocent wee ukuleles.
