Queenstown is renowned for its scenery, but it also has some incredible restaurants and cafes that are worth celebrating. Other regions across New Zealand have Hospitality Awards, and we thought it was about time we brought them to Queenstown. The Queenstown Hospitality Awards celebrate the outstanding hospitality professionals who make a positive impact on the local café and dining scene here in Queenstown. The best part is that they’re open to anyone in the industry – from owners, to crew members, to suppliers, to establishments. Each has an opportunity to be celebrated for their contribution in creating a world-class hospitality industry in Queenstown. We believe the industry is in the know and who better to judge the best of the best, than those who live and breathe the hospitality industry every day. Although the awards are organised by the Restaurant Association, they’re not limited to just member participation as we genuinely think that the more businesses involved the better, as the ultimate objective is supporting the industry. Of course, we want the public to be involved as they’re so important to a thriving hospitality industry. That’s why we have introduced the First Table People’s Choice Award and invite the public to vote for their favourite establishment. This will be awarded to an establishment that excels in customer service, consistency in food preparation and delivery, welcoming ambience and style, attention to detail and is always willing to go that extra mile. Online voting is available via the website (\queenstown) for both industry and the public, closing midnight Sunday 20th May. Our industry is experiencing a skills shortage and we think an important part of working towards alleviating this is by highlighting the successes of those that work in the industry, including business owners. Running a business can be tough, particularly in our industry; the awards ceremony also provides an opportunity for those who work in it to relax and enjoy an evening that’s all about them and their successes. Winners will receive a coveted “Chevron” trophy, representing a stripe indicating rank or length of service – a symbol of excellence in the industry which we hope the public will come to recognise. They will also be listed on the Eat New Zealand website, a movement dedicated to promoting New Zealand’s best food, drink and culinary destinations to the world. The winners will be announced at the awards evening, held at Skyline Queenstown on Monday, 28 May. Tickets to the event are on sale now, to purchase or for more information regarding the awards please visit\queenstown. And don’t forget to vote for your favourite Restaurant or Café and support the hospitality industry here in Queenstown.

QT’s local Hurling team raised $1754 during a charity match for Ronald McDonald House recently. The next Hurling charity match is at the rec grounds on 9 June where they’ll be raising funds for the Wakatipu Youth Trust. Pictured Declan Murray, Rachel Reynolds, Layla Wheeler and Conor Wheeler.

Another Drinking Ban?

I read with disgust this week about our Mayor deciding to look at implementing an extension of the alcohol ban to now include Christmas Day this year! What is Queenstown coming to? Why do QLDC feel the need to treat the local rate payers as a bunch of children whom if they step “out of line” and actually enjoy themselves, should be met with yet another ban or restriction? How much more co-towing towards tourists is there going to be before we crack? This town you may cry is built on tourism, but it is the 1000 local workers who celebrated Xmas last year that keep the conveyor belt well oiled! We pay your salary QLDC so why do you get to decide what is right or wrong for us?

Parking? = Banned, removed or so expensive you cant even consider meeting your local mates at a cafe for a spot of lunch. Crate Day? = Banned, Xmas 2017? = Extension of liquor ban. St Patrick’s Day? = Talk of an alcohol ban for 2019. We only just about managed to get Regaee in the Park approved on Waitangi Day. (No records of trouble or littering though from this event so guess not media worthy) And now Christmas Day!!?? QLDC have a hard enough time maintaining a positive relationship with the public - cancelling Christmas Day in the bay? Perhaps JB would like to share his address and folks can celebrate on his estate if he so concerned. Get a grip Scroodge. Local Defender

Pedestrian Crossings Ok we all know that every winter things get chaotic with people crossing the streets anywhere with no regards to traffic which is specially dangerous early morning when it’s still dark and people are wearing black, but now with this new bus stop things just turned ridiculous! We’ve got a painted crossing between Fat Badgers and The Mall and another painted crossing between ANZ corner and Starbucks, why doesn’t the council get the crossing between the Village Green and the Discover Queenstown agency painted as well? And while we’re at it why not improve the signage AND get some banners inside the buses to educate pedestrians to use the marked crossings? I honestly always try to stop for pedestrians on the marked crossings for as long as it takes - it actually does feels good to help! But it pisses me off all those people waltzing across the streets anywhere like it’s a museum where they can just stop in the middle of the streets to take pictures.

And I’m sorry but I won’t even slow down for them, let Darwin take care of people with no common sense... I’m not a stupid bigot complaining about the people who bring billions of dollars to our town - we wouldn’t be on the map if it weren’t for them. I just want at least a little more planning from the council instead of always keep plugging one hole and waiting to see where the next leak shows up. Those signage and educational banners should be planned along the new bus stop and lower fees - it’s just so obvious isn’t it...?

FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS Editorial - 649 Yes, it is now essentially one local tourism market that is more attractive and efficient when seen as such. The separate organisations were set up when the Crown Range Road was a rutted gravel track & far fewer visitors spent time exploring and enjoying both the Wanaka and Wakatipu basins and beyond than they do today. The ore joined up the communities and visitor markets and services are the more likely mass transport between the two towns will be viable. Time to join together as one community. “Southern Lakes Winter Festival” next.

Dancing With My Jacket Is Fun, Said No One Ever - 649 I wonder if you’ve ever worked in a bar? Can you imagine having to deal with the amount of morons who would ‘coat check’ their jacket only to forget it, leave the bar and come back the next day complaining that someone at the bar stole it? - Nightmare. I wouldn’t want my bar to liable for the constant stream of muppetey I see on QTT with “jackets been stolen!!!!’ - “Oh no I found it behind a bush”

I haven’t worked in a bar. But I have been to many bars outside of Queenstown that seem to handle the coat check service with a smile and even find it beneficial. I’m guessing that your level of cynicism towards the human race means that you Danny, have been working in bars for far too long.

#Coatcheckinqueenstown Or that I have a fair few more winters in Queenstown under my belt to know that having a coat check in your bar is an absolute shit show. Got to pay someone to manage it followed by having to argue with some drunk eegit who left his coat at the bar before mine? Yeah. Nah.

Winter’s all but here and Carla Paranihi, Executive Chef at Cromwell’s The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre, couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity this brings for creating breakfast, lunch and dinner menus to beat the dull day blues and warm the cockles of the heart. Carla’s not talking stodgy, but dishes like apple and prune stuffed pork loin served with sprouts, bacon and duck fat potatoes. Carla’s also talking vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. It’s still early days for the winter menu but already those who favour vegetables over meat dishes have given thumbs up to Goat’s cheese, beetroot and spinach filo parcels with salad leaves. .

As The Gate’s ‘food boss’ for the Forage Information Centre & Café and Five Stags Bar & Restaurant, Carla believes there would be few places, even in the Wakatipu, where the kitchen is open from 6am through to 8.30pm with bar snacks until 10.30pm. “For truckies, tradies, commercial travellers and others such as tourists making an early start from Queenstown through the Kawarau Gorge, we couldn’t be better placed or more convenient with loads of off street parking. Our breakfast menu at Forage runs from 6am to 11am with lunch from 12 noon to 2pm. Five Stags offers the same lunch menu and kids’ menu,” explains Carla. “How’s this for a tasty breakfast off the Forage menu! Porridge served with a delectable Central Otago dried fruit compote made in-house. Another new flavour sensation is Belgian waffles served with banana, bacon and maple syrup. For a real stick to the ribs start to a winter’s day we also have grilled haloumi with roasted tomato sauce, potato rosti, mushrooms and spinach. Of course, at Forage we have simply irresistible and always changing cabinet food available from 6am to 4pm with almost everything on offer made in our kitchen.”

Whether you are looking for a bar with a restaurant or a restaurant with the bar, The Gate’s Five Stags delivers both ways in a hunting lodge themed environment that could not be more appropriate for Central Otago. “Photos can’t really do justice to Five Stags décor or the food we serve. For our second winter we’re going all out with starters that include what seems for men in particular a nostalgic reminder of their mum’s cooking, lamb sweet breads delicately fried and served with a spicy plum sauce. Steak lovers are already coming back for more of our ribeye served with bacon and mushroom sauce, duck fat potatoes and fried free range eggs. Desserts have also got the winter treatment as have our Black Panther Pizza. How about these three to whet the appetite. Royale Cat which is like an eggs benedict on a pizza base, Sweet Lamb featuring roast lamb with kumara and mint, and for vegetarians, The Bengal Tiger.”

When Central Motor Speedway on the outskirts of Cromwell held its first meeting over Christmas in 1980, cars were backed up well into the Kawarau Gorge. Unfortunately, a howling gale came out of nowhere with winds so strong they created dust storms that blew over all the porta loos, including one with a man in it. This meant the very first meeting had to be postponed. Not the ideal start for the speedway or Ron Spriggs, the Invercargill panelbeater, speedway driver and dirt track fan who all but single-handedly built the speedway. On Saturday, April 21 the last meeting of the 2017/18 season celebrated the memory of Ron Spriggs with the inaugural Ron Spriggs Memorial Meeting. Like that first meeting, traffic from the Wakatipu ran thick through the Kawarau Gorge. In one of the cars was Kylee Evans with daughter Jess and son Brax taking dad Ben to the speedway to celebrate his birthday. An occasion that also brought about five car-loads of their friends trackside. For the kids and Kylee it was their first time to the speedway, with Kylee saying it won’t be their last: “We’re definitely going to be going to more speedway events next summer – such a good time! Real family fun. It was also wonderful to meet Ron Spriggs’ family.” It’s no coincidence that although sited in Cromwell it is Central Motor Speedway, because that’s exactly what it is, the fastest family show on earth for all of the Central Otago region. The connection with the Wakatipu has been strong from day one, and not just with spectators but also drivers. Currently these include sprintcar pilots Jason Scott (Scott Investments), Andy Erskine (Erskine Construction) and Aaron Cleveland (Floor It Contracting). And just to emphasise what a family show speedway is, Andy’s son Lucas and daughter Keely compete in the Youth Ministock class for 12 – 16 year olds while Aaron’s sons Jack and Finn race Youth Ministocks and Six Shooters. The 2018/19 season at Central Motor Speedway starts in October, but before that there is a mudfest, the annual Bathurst Funday for Holdens and Fords on the same weekend as “Australia’s Great Race”. On the face of it, that might sound like “just another tour company’ but we’re a little more outside the box than your average run-ofthe-mill tour operator. We strive to be outrageously successful, clever and innovative at every level of our organisation, meaning that we don’t simply take people into the wilderness on a hiking holiday - we blow them away with the trip of a lifetime they’ll never ever forget. Someone with excellent communication skills, grammar, literacy, computer skills and attention to detail - perfectionists are welcome!
