As you pick up this copy of the Lakes Weekly during your morning routine, I can imagine hundreds of copies sitting in shopping trolleys full of groceries around the Queenstown Lakes District. My question to you shoppers is this: can you refrain from putting said groceries in a plastic single-use shopping bag? A couple of weeks ago I was blessed to have my parents visit Queenstown from the UK, and as we marvelled at the breath-taking azure views of Lake Wakatipu from their hotel suite, they commented about their Kiwi supermarket experience. Why is everyone still using plastic bags? Isn’t New Zealand supposed to be green? With the uber-successful LOTR franchises, you can forgive foreigners’ preconceptions of New Zealand of being a land full of hobbits, elves and dwarves; a vision of an unspoilt clean paradise from a pre-Industrial age. After a bit of research it appears my parents were correct. In NZ we use 350 bags each, every year. Plus, a shockingly low 2% of them are recycled. That’s 1.715 billion plastic bags going into NZ landfill every year, where they take 1000 years to decompose. The mind boggles. Many end up in the ocean where they poison fish and in turn they re-enter the food chain, and we end up eating the plastic inside the fish. Gross. It appears we are behind other countries on this issue. Across the pond there is state-wide banning either implemented or being implemented, and in the UK, there has been a mandatory levy for over 2 years, and as a result they have seen reduced consumption of bags by 85% in just six months after it was introduced. The levy has proved so successful now that the big supermarket chains are about to stop stocking them altogether. This does go a long way to explain my parent’s recent surprise at our shopping habits.

We shouldn’t despair just yet because I feel there is definitely hope on the horizon. Over the last year there has been a growing public opposition to plastic bags, showing that many support a full-on ban, and even more want a mandatory levy. So, it’s time to push our government to make a change for the better. Last week a petition signed by 60,000 New Zealanders including our own Mayor Jim Boult on behalf of QLDC was presented to parliament. Other signatories included the Mayors of Christchurch, Wellington, Nelson and many of the big businesses that use single use bags like Countdown and Bunnings. Sounds like everyone is on board with this so why wait? We should be acting now as individuals to cut out using plastic bags altogether. Yes, sometimes we do get lazy and it is an extra thing to worry about, but with a bit of time it is definitely something we can all get used to. I really feel that all of us living here owe it to the incredible beauty of this town and the wonderful nature around us, to act in a responsible environmental manner. Hitchhiking Rudeness

Hitchhiking is a common occurrence in New Zealand, I guess really it’s part of the New Zealand experience and culture. However if you’re a hitchhiker and people choose to drive past you whilst your trying to catch a lift, don’t be rude to them, it’s a privilege not a right! Also if someone is kind enough to give you a lift, don’t treat them or their car like you’re the Queen of England riding on donkey. Personally I won’t be picking up hitchhikers anymore because of four different occasions where people have been rude to me. Twice they have had stuff leak out of their bags and onto my car seat, then left without telling me. Once someone just decided to

drop their rubbish on my car floor and once after I had driven past someone (as I was literally going just down the road from them) they ‘flipped me the bird!’. Hitchhikers don’t be surprised if you don’t get picked up as much anymore if your treating people this way! Plus the bus system is much better now and not that expensive either!

Abandoned Cars Blocking Car Spaces Charging extra for parking has not helped the downtown parking situation, it is just filling the Council coffers and annoying people. The council has also removed parking spaces instead of providing a better service. Yet it would be simple to get a lot of ‘extra’ parking. That is simply by freeing spaces. They could get almost a 10% increase in spaces by the gardens if they just towed away all the illegally parked abandoned vehicles from there. It has taken 3 months but the parking wardens have finally noticed and ticketed a couple of them. Not good enough! Tow them away. It is easy to spot most of them because they have 2017 regos! I spotted 5 out of 30. That and the debris over the bonnets. A quick walk along the upper end of the ironically named Park Street and its branches in the early morning before the commuters arrive and you can easily spot the derelicts. Any car parked in the CBD with an expired rego should be immediately ticketed and towed. Hey, they haven’t paid their ACC and other contributions. They are not entitled to the carpark. Don’t wait 5 months to move on these behemoths. And don’t complain that there is nowhere to put them. They could

have been towed to the temporary carpark in Warren Park over the summer as an interim. There are good free all day parks that citizens are missing out on. And NZTA and Immigration should be held to account here too! Any vehicle sold to a visiting visa holder should be bonded against the owner leaving and not being able to prove the appropriate disposal of the vehicle. Say a $1,000 put down on purchase refunded when a change of ownership has been registered. When said person goes to leave the country they have to have registered their appropriate/legitimate disposal of the car and payment of any outstanding tickets and fines. This can be used to defray the cost of dealing with relics, and ensure that Queenstown isn’t used as a car graveyard anymore.

If you’re going to be an SHA then you need to allocate at least 50% as affordable to buy options for families and QLDC should take that into account and hold accountable the development companies.

Response from QLDC The increase in fees has been used to subsidise the $2 flat fare on Queenstown’s new bus service, which has been a huge success thus far in reducing the number of vehicles coming into Queenstown each day. The reality for such an affordable public transport option to be offered is that it needs to be well used to maintain it, and we’ve long stated that it needs to be funded to offer substantially subsidised fees. As part of this bigger picture we increased parking fees in Queenstown for the first time in seven years in December last year.

Wanaka A&P Show: One of the South Island’s largest A&P Shows, the Wanaka A&P Show is happening this weekend.
