This weekend demonstrates one of the most irritating things about living in a ‘destination’. The Gibbston Valley Winery summer concert attracts visitors from across New Zealand and though the concert itself is very well managed, it’s the chaos before and afterwards which really grinds my gears. My issue is with the typical demographic of these visitors. They’re older and contrary to popular opinion, they still know how to party like animals. They’ve been doing it since before we millennials were born and as far as I can tell, they’ve kept up both the pace and the debauchery. The only difference being that a few grey hairs and a handful of decades under your belt makes the chaos seem more sophisticated and therefore attracts little-to-no media attention. And I think that’s unfair. When millennials descend on the lakefront over Christmas and New Year, drinking, having fun and being noisy, public attention focusses on the few who spoil it for everyone else. The littering and bad behaviour by a few raises discussions about visitor management, banning public drinking and the problem with the youth of today. But when the older generation cause trouble, nobody calls for a drinking ban or bemoans the state of sixty-year-olds today. While trying to enjoy a quiet meal this weekend, there was a group of men my father’s age sitting near us outside of a restaurant. They slopped beer everywhere, swore loudly and argued with the bartender about how much they’d had to drink. Friends who are security staff and bartenders say this generation are more difficult to manage because they feel entitled to argue with young hospitality staff. Tell a drunk 21-year-old it’s time to go home and most often they do. Tell a drunk 60-year-old to go home and apparently, you’re likely to get an argument.

The result is that people are more likely to complain or take action against a group of misbehaving, young French backpackers than a group of baby boomers from Auckland causing just as much trouble Poor behaviour isn’t a generational thing – there’s visitors of every age causing trouble and behaving badly when they visit our town. The ‘here for a good time not a long time’ attitude is not confined to young backpackers, but they’re the ones who are often blamed and berated. Though the troublemakers are a minority, they ruin the atmosphere for the rest of us and if we decide to let half of them get away with anti-social behaviour simply because of their age, we’ll never be able to manage the problem. Road Rage
On Tuesday morning last week a car pulled out of a driveway in McBride St. He stopped in the middle of the road talking on his phone. All I did was put an imaginary phone to my ear.
He had road rage, lying, stating he was in his driveway and if it wasn’t for my age he would have attacked me. Three years ago I lost a mate who was killed by a woman on a cell phone.
With that he jumped out of the vehicle still blocking McBride St and screamed at me to mind my own business. He’s around 30 and I’m 72.
Why didn’t I dial 555 - I believe in karma. So it’s just a matter of time before he suffers a vehicle crash. A hard way to learn a lesson

What The Hell Is Happening.... What in Gods name is happening to our beautiful little town? Within just a few years it has gone from a relaxed place of fresh air and amazing views to traffic lights, next to no free car parking and commercial businesses galore. The new businesses have gone up so fast that the infrastructure has not been able to catch up. It’s pretty simple really, more businesses = more staff (and in some cases their families), more staff = more housing, more housing = more traffic and pressure on facilities (roading, water, sewage etc) - but where’s the housing? Why - that comes after the businesses are built of course!
Now, there’s plans for a new massive sub-division of (s) wanky hotels, tourist apartments and luxury townhouses in Frankton - where are all these people going to live? I doubt a bit of staff housing is going to cover the lot of them and don’t think they’ll be staying in the “luxury townhouses”. Someone in the QLDC eventually needs to grow a pair and finally say to potential developers “NO! - we need to let the infrastructure catch up”, otherwise it’s a very bleak looking future for QT.

What is one to do in this situation? We gave them the evil eye and they eventually buggerred off but it was not cool.
A couple of seemingly average male tourists walked down to our little cove and started taking pictures of the view (all good). A few minutes later, I realised one of them was fully photographing my friend and I in our swimsuits. What the hell?!

Yes the roads are more accommodating but most importantly the attitude of drivers is generally a lot better. If it’s not safe to pass everyone continues in. When it’s safe to pass the slower driver pulls over to the side and lets the faster one pass. Almost without fail the faster one will flash their hazard lights in appreciation once passed. No aggression. Absolutely brilliant.
Janet Sadly it’s the locals who are taking the risks because of these incompetent overseas drivers, that blatantly refuse to move over and let others past. Imo, most of it stems from these incompetent drivers that some of shouldn’t even be driving in the first place. A bit of a one sided article I reckon. Oh and the statistics on the last paragraph I would say is overall.
Jason Be interesting to see how they come up with the figures. Is it people that hold a new Zealand drivers licence. What do they class as a tourist? Is it somebody here for a year on a work visa as they can drive on an international licence for the 1st year, which side of the total are they on? If tourists are the cause of 31% of accidents it’s still awfully high especially when you consider that they’re most probably a smaller percentage of the total traffic on the road as a lot of tourists come by bus or plane and never get a car. It would be really interesting to see the percentage of tourists that come here and hire cars that end up in accidents.

Kylee Discovers The Gate Only just returned from maternity leave, Kylee Evans, a member of the Lakes Weekly Bulletin sales and advertising team, confesses she had an ulterior motive for making a beeline to Cromwell where she had arranged to meet with LWB clients in the Forage Information Centre & Café at The Gate Hospitality & Tourist Centre. “My husband Ben’s business, B & B Interiors, had done a lot of the plastering/interior linings work in 2016 as part of the transformation of the Golden Gate’s Pisa Café and public bar into Forage and Five Stags Bar & Restaurant,” says Kylee. “Although I’d been impressed with what I’d seen in the ad and The Gate website, the realty is ‘wow!’ The moment I walked into Forage I was blown away. So fresh, so open with great food – loved the cheese scone and locally made Benjer Juice - and lovely staff. After the meetings I took a wee nosey around. I love
the idea of visitors to Central Otago and Southern Lakes being able to make bookings at Forage before taking on Queenstown’s traffic. “Opening the door to the lovely passage from Forage to Five Stags I popped into the toilets. Unbelievable. My advice is call in there if you’re in Cromwell need to go to the loo. The attention to interior detail is amazing with cool basins formed out of stone, a photo mural end wall and a lovely baby changing room, and by the way there’s a changing room in the men’s toilet too. Shows The Gate owners recognise that today’s dad are involved with babies and that single fathers are a reality of life. “Onwards to the Five Stags Bar & Restaurant. Cliché, I know, but this is jaw dropping. The hunting lodge themed fit out is so appropriate for the region and literally transports you to another time and place. I particularly liked the Hunter’s Lodge. Here again, the attention to detail is amazing. A seemingly endless period of hot sunny weather has settled over Cromwell with 30 degree celcius days the new normal. Holiday-makers have packed the shores of Lake Dunstan cooling off to the sound of a constant hum of boats travelling up and down. Highlights from the festive season included the Cherry Festival where Dunedin fireman Aaron Collins was named New Zealand's champion cherry stone-spitter for 2017 on New Years Eve. Hundreds of visitors watched in awe as he spat his winning stone 12.5m. The Gate Hotel was the venue for the Lake Dunstan Triathlon prize giving, concluding a hot but fun day of biking, kayaking, running and swimming. This was event four of the Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group's Bike it Now! Summer Series. The five event series has been running for over twenty years and is stronger than ever with numbers growing and big name athletes taking part. World and Commonwealth Games champ, Anton Cooper raised the bar at the Bannockburn Classic MTB event in late December, enjoying a return to an event he had last entered as a boy.
