inSight for Hindsight. They say hindsight is 20/20. “If only we’d known then what we know now” is the frequent lament… “how were we supposed to know?” Whether looking at the threats to water quality in our streams and rivers; the cost of buying a home; or buying shares in that new Google thingy, we all have those moments when we wish we could have made yesterday’s decisions with the benefit of today’s hindsight. Particularly now, we might be wishing for some pre-emptive hindsight even more than usual. There’s a real sense of change about the town. The question on everyone’s lips is “what next?” and there’s no shortage of people willing to give their version of the answer. It’s an election year of course, and that always brings out a crowd eager to tell us what we’re supposed to want, and how voting for them is the best way to get it. In addition to this, our town has many developers anxious to have us realise that their project will be the solution to all our problems. And Council is getting in on the act too, asking us for our opinions on everything from special housing areas, to brothel planning bylaws, to options for a new vision for Queenstown. With all these people asking us for our opinions on their options, or our support for their plans, wouldn’t it be great to get a sneak peek into the future? To learn a few things that might let us see what’s coming, and offer us a little of tomorrow’s hindsight today? Sounds pretty good to me, and at Catalyst that’s exactly what we’ve set out to do. inSight will run across the weekend of 2nd and 3rd of September and is built to offer us all a sneak peek into our future.

This year’s inSight focusses on towns of the future, how we’ll live in them, and how they’ll shape our interactions with each other. We explore aspects that will stay the same, some that will change dramatically, and some that are specifically and critically important for us as we plan the future towns of our district.

Too Many Cones Bro!
Strangely my whinge is not traffic related but it is something that annoys me wherever I drive around our beautiful district. I think we have pretty much become immune to the sight of road cones. They’re like mushrooms that sprout overnight along our roadways and have become a flouro orange part of our vista. Long after the cones have gone though, my immunity hasn’t extended to the terminal moraine of roadsigns, normally staggered in sets of 3, warning us and reminding us that the section of road that was worked on and repaired 3 months ago, may not have road markings on it. Really! If there is no white line on the edge of the road for 10 metres will we actually drive off the road in confusion? Does this signage have to stay there for months until the climate dictates that the road can be painted. Same goes for the ‘No Hard Shoulder’. As a cyclist I know there is virtually no hard
shoulder on any of our roading network so why put up signs to say so. They are a blight with the only effect of pushing cyclists further out into traffic lanes to avoid them. And don’t get me started on the roadwork signage that stays in place seemingly for weeks when there is no activity whatsoever. Council protects the visual amenity of our community by enforcing signage regulations. Can we not allow some common sense on our roads to preserve that amenity too and if necessity dictates, that it is promptly removed once work completed.

Four days later I am driving into work when some idiot in a blue volkswagen overtook me on Malaghans Road, showering me in grit and creating three new stone chips on my windscreen.
Every time it rains, the tiles chosen to pave our footpaths and walkways around Queenstown become a slippery hazard. Covered in a film of water they become such a hazard and a walk across town causes me to nearly slip over at least 3-4 times. Please note that I am wearing heavy duty work shoes, but I have noticed a lot of other visitors slipping over in their Converse and Ugg boots.
