You would have to be living under a rock to have missed the fact New Zealand goes to the polls on 23 September. And it’s all about rock analogies with the incumbent Prime Minister Bill ‘the rock’ English pitted against the ‘rock star’ Jacindamania Ardern. There is of course Winnie to throw into the mix, the Greens and a swag of minor parties that under MMP could end up making or breaking a government. Queenstown used to be the forgotten part of the country when it came to election time. We obediently paid our taxes while taking care of ourselves. Labour or National, it made little difference. However things have changed with tourism up there with dairy as the largest contributor to the New Zealand economy and Queenstown is the place that keeps the NZ Inc tourism machine oiled. Suddenly we are very important to the government’s finances. The political buzz words are housing, immigration policy and infrastructure. All things the government need to help with if the oil is to continue dripping from Queenstown to the rest of New Zealand. However this great natural environment is the pillar that supports our identity. In some people’s minds these buzz words are also the rotten reality of a Queenstown gone too big and an environment that cannot handle the growth. Whatever your political leanings, you are kidding yourself if you think the outcome of this election will not affect you.
This debate promises to be a firecracker considering the differing rhetoric and policies of the four participants. MC’d by TV3 political reporter Paddy Gower we are guaranteed a night of political theatre with the purse strings of New Zealand the prize. A Bridge Too Far
Just read the latest Kawarau Bridge update and OMG. As a local resident who uses this road several times daily, I am disappointed that it will not be finished as earlier forecast and the whole project has proceeded at a snail’s pace. They should get their act together and finish it before Christmas. This echoes what happened in Kaikoura after the Quake when they were slowly opening the Northern Highway until people objected how slow and little manpower was being used, and now there are 300 men working on opening the road and are making great progress. It’s pretty obvious the whole project is being drawn out deliberately for other reasons with financial gains.
So wippydee in the latest release they say that we will be able to use ONE lane only at Christmas, BUT there will be delays and the whole thing will be finished March 2018, BUT it will also be closed for landscaping at times after that. OMG.

Here’s To The Bus Driver I was impressed by the driver from Ritchies bus No. 11 who’s name was Amrinder Sigh last Tuesday. He helped a Chinese lady to call a taxi to drop her off to her motel when the town center was actually the last station after taking her from the airport. He also helped her to carry her three big suitcases because the lady was exhausted after the long journey on the plane. He did lock the bus before he left as a professional and safety concerned driver. It took only 5 minutes to help a passenger who had no idea about the public transport situation in QTN.
While most bus drivers may only say ’Sorry, I will have to go. I can’t wait’... I was glad I caught this moment and felt proud of Amrinder Sigh. None of the passengers on the bus complained because I do believe they felt the same. We definitely need more drivers like Amrinder to show the world that this town is full of caring and love.

I work in town and can’t park outside my shop for more than 30 minutes before I would get a ticket. How is Industrial Place any different? Parking limits are there for a reason so the public can come and visit and have somewhere to park. Don’t feel picked on, once the $2 bus starts in November no-one will be able to park ANYWHERE near town for free all day.

The only winners despite your 30 sec warm feeling of social justice is QLDC who take that lovely pile of parking ticket money and uses it to remove even more parking in Queenstown leading to more of the same.
