As an employer in Queenstown for 20 years, the challenge of finding and retaining good staff has never been more difficult than it is today. This is despite a growing permanent population widening the pool of skilled employees, and the desire of many more from elsewhere in New Zealand and abroad wanting to move to the Queenstown Lakes. Twenty years ago you could count the number of bars and restaurants in Queenstown on one hand and the number of supermarkets was zero. Frankton Flats was a farm with stock grazing the side of the airport runway. Believe me; it was hard to find staff back then. Although the population has increased, the number of businesses competing for skilled staff has far exceeded that population growth. So when an employer like me gets their hands on an employee who adds real value to the business, you fight desperately hard to hold onto them. And that desperation can get pretty darn expensive when that special employee needs a work visa renewal or is applying for New Zealand residency. I would bet a Cow Pizza there is not a single business in Queenstown that does not have at least one person on the workforce who is either on a working holiday or essential skills visa; going for New Zealand residency; or is a new Kiwi. We are a town full of immigrants in a country of immigrants. This makes any changes to Immigration NZ policy and the way that policy is applied, very very relevant to employers and their migrant employees. So when the perfect storm of foreign nationals on work visas get lined up ten deep on Monday morning in front of a Judge at the Queenstown District Court on drunk driving and other idiotic drink related charges, expect a tough response from Immigration NZ. Why wouldn’t we? Do not expect to collect another work visa as of right and do not expect to become a New Zealand citizen without some convincing special circumstances being proven. Immigration NZ are growing tired of the number of migrants on temporary visas adding convictions to their CV instead of the experience and qualifications those visas were intended to allow.

Like most Queenstown employers at any one time I am helping at least one employee apply for residency or to extend a work visa. Why? Certainly not because it is easier than employing a Kiwi or cheaper. It is expensive to navigate the Immigration NZ process and the results uncertain at the best of times, and even more so when one of these employees has to deal with Immigration NZ asking why they have been convicted of an offence against the very people who gave them the permission to stay here. There is an expectation that if you live here you must abide by the laws of the country, because if you don’t there are a lot of people in the queue who will. We go through the visa process because we need to keep key members of staff. Those who add value and are worth the investment are always very hard to come by. But it has to go both ways. If you want to stay working in New Zealand, if you want to be a key member of staff and increase your pay packet, or if you want to call these mountains home permanently you need to show respect for the laws of the land. It’s not ok to urinate in public places, it’s not ok to have fisty cuffs at the taxi stand, and it is not acceptable to drive drunk on our streets. Immigration NZ take a very dim view of such disrespect for the laws of New Zealand. RE: Industrial Place Parking
In response to this whinge a couple of weeks ago, I just wanted to extend my thanks to this concerned citizen. As they so sharply observed a lot of cars were not parked in designated spaces, and many exceeded the 60 minute limit by quite a margin. The problem is this my eagle eyed helper, the vast majority of those cars belong to the workers of Industrial Place and Repco Blvd, and as you so kindly drew this to the council’s attention, the already limited parking in this area is now even more limited and being checked on.
So may I suggest I park on your driveway in the mornings and you can run me into work as you have single-handedly taken away 50 or so parking spaces for employees in this area. Again, huge thanks.

Now there is a large carpark on Gorge Road, unfortunately not only does this fill up in a matter of minutes in a morning but it is a known target for thieves, even with the new cameras.

Bins In The Gardens Another day another bad bin decision by QLDC. The new bins that have appeared in the gardens seem to have taken a few cues from the surrounding frisbee golf. It’s now a par 3 to put your empty crisp packet or beer bottle in the trash. For those that haven’t seen them yet, they are large, square and tall bins, with a 10cm x 10cm opening in the top. To combat the issue, bins becoming overfull just makes it impossible to fit anything bigger than a coaster in them. Then they will take ages to get full. Great idea. I know there is a growing dumping problem in town. I’m sure would-be-dumpers, will just walk away and reconsider their life choices when they can’t fit the contents of their car in that slot. Jokes aside this new design is completely inaccessible to children or the disabled. What a great way to teach kids to be responsible when they physically can’t use the facilities.
I’m only slightly vertically challenged at 5”4’, but I can’t get anything in the new bins without a part of my body touching the bin. That might be fine now with them being new and clean, but give it a few weeks of drink spills and fag stubs and I won’t be going anywhere near them. To save the Council some R&D money here are some other great extensions of this idea; “Instead of adding more public toilets, lets just remove the handles, that way they will always be vacant”, and “If we put a bollard in the middle of every parking space, parking will never be full”

Response from QLDC QLDC faces a range of interesting challenges when it comes to finding solutions to litter in our District. As you’re no doubt aware – we have huge visitor numbers and a small ratepayer base to fund our infrastructure, and this includes public litter bins. Something we’re trying to do is find better bins that can cope with the demand placed on them without adding to the collection costs, whilst also encouraging the public to help us reduce waste through recycling.
The new larger bins you mention have been installed to address both a problem of overflow and to encourage recycling. Both have more capacity and this will reduce littering and help keep the gardens in a much tidier state. Our approach is in line with a number of other councils across the country who are also moving to larger bins. Feedback on the upgrade has been very positive so far and if you give them time we think you’ll come to love them as much as we do.

Driving Test For Tourists - 612 Having regard to the recent proliferation of overseas guest workers increasly being hauled before the courts, due mostly to drunken driving, some for doing so repeatly. Perhaps its time we should introduce an policy of zero tolerance of those who are convicted of these or any other offences and give them a free trip to the airport to allow them to be promptly relocated back to their country of domicile, rather than further put the lives of law abiding residents further at risk.
Name And Shame Scientists in USA have found that texting while driving is the equivlent to blowing 700 in the drink driving test and texting while driving in Queenstown is really common. But, no one does anything about it, unlike drink driving, where they spend most of their time policing here.
