The Growing Conservation Movement in the Wakatipu. In the past few years, there has been a growing group of dedicated conservationists doing their best to help conserve the wonderful landscape that we are fortunate enough to call home. Four local Trusts are being highlighted at this year’s Real Journeys Birds of a Feather Charity Ball. This is the third year the Ball has been run with Real Journeys footing the entire bill for the event with 100% of proceeds from ticket sales and auctions on the night going to a project that the Department of Conservation is affiliated with. Last year’s efforts saw $64k being raised for the Dusky Sound/Tamatea Restoration Project. This year we wanted to focus on the amazing work that is being done locally, primarily by the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust, The Wakatipu Wildlife Trust, The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust, and the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group. The RDWT and the WWT each focus on predator control in different ways. The RDWT was formed in 2013 and work at the head of the lake undertaking pest control in the Routeburn and Dart valleys. Their vision is to create an inland sanctuary for the birds of the Routeburn and Dart Valleys and to protect them on the Dart and Rees braided river systems. Some of the species benefitting from their trapping work include the mōhua/yellowhead, whio/blue duck, kākā, and wrybill/ ngutuparore. The WWT is comprised of 10 local community groups working towards the Government’s vision of a Predator Free New Zealand by 2050, touted as New Zealand’s Apollo mission. These groups are aiming to suppress the numbers of rats, stoats and possums in their respective patches which currently include Glenorchy, Bob’s Cove, Closeburn Station, Fernhill, Arrowtown, Kelvin Heights, Jacks Point and Wye Creek, with Kingston and Arthurs Point coming on board shortly. This Trust formed in June 2017 and has a vision to create and maintain a predator-free environment to enable our birds and other native wildlife to flourish. The WWT are keen for residents and visitors alike to help with their efforts to bring the birds back.

The WRT was formed in 2013 by passionate botanists, Neill and Barb Simpson whose hard work over the past 15 years on Pigeon and Pig Islands has seen the once bare and weedy islands become a haven for native birds thanks to hundreds of volunteer hours. Inspired by this success, the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust was created in 2013. The WRT’s vision is to protect and restore the native biodiversity of the Wakatipu Basin through revegetation projects, collaboration, education and advocacy. With weekly potting days and regular planting days throughout the year, volunteers are always welcome.

The WCG was created in 2009 as a response to the wilding conifers that are threatening the iconic landscapes around us. They are focused on protecting biodiversity and the remarkable landscape of the Wakatipu for the benefit of residents, users, tourists and particularly, future generations. Volunteers are encouraged to Adopt-A-Plot on Ben Lomond that they are then responsible for keeping clear of wilding trees. DOC has a close working relationship with each of these Trusts that help us undertake the work necessary to protect our environment. We are delighted that Real Journeys have chosen to highlight and reward their work at this year’s sold-out Ball. We hope that our local residents and visitors will be inspired to join the green movement in the Wakatipu and volunteer with one of these very worthy Trusts and to do their bit for conservation.

The relationship between Cromwell and Queenstown is changing. Big Brother is increasingly becoming reliant on ‘satellite’ towns for accommodation and lower rent industrial space. Lots of businesses based in Cromwell now service the Wakatipu. Central Otago residents now shop in QT at the larger retail chains, contributing significantly to the economy. Tourists selfdriving through Central into town are increasing, as are daily commuters, who are not just burly tradies with one arm out the window. But there is a big problem. If we are going to talk about roads as arteries, then the Kawarau Gorge has the pipes of an middle-aged, pie-eating, heavy smoker with hemorrhoids. This road was not built to handle the volume, size and power of the traffic now using it daily. There are spots so narrow and uneven that one must
breathe in when passing a freight truck or bus. Pinched veins on corners over-looking a sharp drop to the river, and black ice on the corners leading onto bridge decks. In comparison, the road from Clyde to Cromwell is a beautifully cambered athlete, and while we had to have a dam built to get it, and the terrain is different, imagine the free flow of economic power that would result from such a road connecting Queenstown with the State Highways that converge in Cromwell. I’d be very interested to hear if NZTA have any long term plans for the Kawarau Gorge, because prevention is better that cure, as the Manawatu Gorge experience shows us.
As a result of this, several million dollars have been invested in bridge widening, realignments, passing lanes, safety guard railing and signage, slope stabilisation, drainage improvements, and winter maintenance levels of service. Given the topography, there are still some sections that are narrow and problematic to widen, and the potential for slips remains in such an active environment. Within the next 6 months, $1.2m will be spent on rehabilitating and smoothing a large section of the gorge west of the Goldmining Centre.
The Transport Agency is committed to keeping this important link as safe and as resilient as possible, and will continue to do so in the future. There has been significant growth over the past 12 months also: counts from 2016 are 4366 (Cromwell) & 4362 (Gibbston) respectively, with 2017 tracking higher again, however these figures are still provisional and may alter.

Despite at least 4 attemps in the past to push through a revised CBD plan it appears this one might have some traction despite an disingenuous attemp by the QLDC to provide themselfs with an new office edifice at the expense of the unnecessary demolition of the Memorial Hall, Council building and Library, which despite it being probaly the most used ratepayer facility’s will be replace by a drop box. My recommendation would be that The QLDC input should stop after the public consultation process and project hanxed over to private enterprise as they have consistently proved that they can not successively oversee the build of a picket fence let alone a compressive new build.
Name And Shame Bethany, looking into the future, I am starting to wonder if Libraries as we know them wont undergo a huge change over the next 10 to 20 years... the way things are going everything may one day be electronic. So I wouldnt be too worried about planning the town around a library.
