Thank you to our volunteers for your extraordinary sacrifice and genuine care delivered this year. It’s no secret many people are feeling wiped out by what has been a heart wrenching year. Whilst for some the lockdown provided a welcome break from their day to day work lives, for many others it saw very long hours of high pressure stress. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those people sincerely for the sacrifice and genuine care that they delivered in what has undoubtedly been one of darkest periods in the history of our district. At a time of so much uncertainty and without prompting, so many put their hands up to help out. Travel agents worked to locate rare opportunities get people home. Medicos put their own safety on the line to test, care for and give us some certainty. Volunteers reached out to those in need to source food vouchers, money for heating and rent. And at Council, staff took roles in our Emergency Operations Centre, coordinating the urgent response while many Council staff were deemed Essential Workers and just kept going. I wonder how widely known the pressure that Covid 19 put on QLDC staff is. To start with, it should be acknowledged that many at Council already sacrifice private sector salaries and perks to seek better outcomes for their community. We have some of the country’s best and brightest working tirelessly across the district with little thanks and all the curly questions to answer at any kind of occasion – from family bbq’s to kids sports fixtures. 2020 has meant many at Council have quickly had to become experts in fields far outside their day jobs. For example, our resident Arts & Events Manager became a Welfare Manager. She sacrificed time with her own family and threw herself into caring for literally thousands who were feeling trapped and desperate. In our Economic Development Team, staff who had been previously been working to get people into vacant jobs had to change direction and find work for the unemployed. Our IT team had to mobilise hundreds of staff and be on call for the inevitable internet challenges while folk worked day and night. These are just a few examples. This week both the Prime Minister and the Governor General have acknowledged the phenomenal response work done by our community in letters that will be read out at the Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. From me personally, I am deeply grateful. In the most difficult of years, the way we came together and got stuck in, has made me extraordinarily proud. Please, instead of a moan about traffic or rates, take a couple of minutes to say thanks over the holiday period, to Council staff and the many volunteers who have truly gone above and beyond this year.
Santa’s arrival on stage was greeted with huge excitement at the Christmas Show on Sunday.

Other key tourism destinations such as Rotorua, and Auckland also recorded large drops in filled jobs, according to Stats NZ.

‘Filled jobs’ are defined as those with an employer to employee relationship. They don’t include contract workers, freelancers or the selfemployed. “The falls in these popular tourist destinations coincided with the wage subsidies finishing and Covid-19 border restrictions interrupting international tourism,” business insights manager Sue Chapman says. “These decreases are part of an overall weaker picture for both filled jobs and gross earnings across a number of industries, since the onset of Covid-19.” For Queenstown, it doesn’t necessarily mean the jobs no longer exist. Mayor Jim Boult estimated there were about 1000 unfilled jobs in the district before Central Government relaxed immigration rules earlier this month, with businesses crying out for staff. Total filled jobs nationally were up only 0.2 percent (4,777 jobs) to 2.1 million jobs in the September 2020 quarter compared with the September 2019 quarter. This was the smallest year on year rise since the series began.
TURNTABLES
Total gross earnings outpaced filled job numbers, increasing by 5.6 percent ($1.8 billion) to $34 billion in the September 2020 quarter. “Despite job numbers remaining at a similar level to last year, the average gross income has increased,” Chapman says. In September 2020 quarter compared with September 2019, transport, postal, and warehousing, down 5,537 jobs (6.2 percent) had the largest fall, followed by administrative and support services, down 3,819 jobs (3.9 percent). Manufacturing, and accommodation and food services also had falls of over 3,000 filled jobs. Increases in construction, health care and social assistance, and public administration and safety balanced out some of these decreases – all had rises of over 7,000 jobs compared with the September 2019 quarter. Stats NZ draws the data from two Inland Revenue sources: the Employer Monthly Schedule (EMS) and payday filing. Both are associated with PAYE (pay as you earn) tax data. All New Zealand employers are required to report PAYE data for their employees to Inland Revenue.

The new quarterly employment measure, which aims to assist with analysis of the labour market, was published for the first time last Thursday, analysing the September 2020 quarter against data backdated to the June 2011 quarter. The Business Employment data will be used to produce a quarterly filled jobs and gross earnings series, published nine weeks after the end of the reference quarter.

NOCKIE’S PALETTE & STONERIDGE CELLAR DOOR
ON OUR DOORSTEP You may be familiar with Stoneridge Wineries at Lakes Hayes but a new collaboration between Nockies Palette and Stoneridge awaits this summer. Nockie’s Palette Wines and Stoneridge Estate have come together to offer a one-of-a-kind wine tasting & art experience. Nestled amidst acres of stunning gardens and vines, this recently opened new Cellar Door offering is set amidst a peaceful sanctuary just 15 minutes from downtown Queenstown on the shores of Lake Hayes with spectacular lake and mountain views.
THE WINES
FEAST YOUR EYES AND YOUR TASTE BUDS Nockie’s Palette was founded and conceived by Australian artist Michael Nock based on the concept of ‘where art and wine meet.’ Michael’s dream of building a foundation has allowed artists and artisan to combine talents to bring you something truly extraordinary. Over the years artists who have benefited from the Nock Art Foundation have left a lasting contribution through their work, with a number of paintings on public display. Similarly, Stoneridge Estate was created by New Zealand artist and writer Da’Vella Gore. Her art and design vision can be seen in the house, the Chapel, the stunning gardens and vineyard that she and her family have created reflecting her love for the New Zealand landscape. By coming together in this way locals and visitors can experience a unique collaboration while learning of the history of these iconic wineries, winemakers and artists who make this such a unique place.
Just as the artist has a palette of paints and colours, Nockie’s Palette offer a palette of handcrafted wines showcasing unique hues, textures and flavours. Nockie’s wines are made by a small number of handpicked top winemakers from across New Zealand and Australia. Their award-winning Pinot Noir grapes are harvested on their Georgetown Vineyard just on the Cromwell side of the Kawarau Gorge, the Chardonnays came from highly respected winemaker Tim Turvey in Hawkes Bay while their Shiraz and Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro blend is produced in the Barossa Valley in Australia by iconic winemaker John Duval. Since their vineyard was first planted twenty years ago, Stoneridge has produced a selection of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Rose. Their wines are produced by award-winning winemaker Jen Parr, voted Winemaker of the Year 2020 by Australasia’s leading wine magazine Gourmet Traveller.
Our Recommendation Enjoy a Classic Tasting of 6 beautifully-crafted boutique wines and even indulge a little with an additional Premium tasting, while relaxing on the sun-kissed terrace. Where: 15 min drive only from Queenstown – At Stoneridge Estate, 756 Lake Hayes-Arrow Junction Highway RD 1, Frankton, Queenstown 9371 When: 7 days a week: 11am to 5pm – 03-669 2277

Country’s leaders thank regions Volunteers At an event held on Monday afternoon both the Prime Minister and the Governor General acknowledged the phenomenal response work done by the community volunteers in letters that were read out at the Volunteer Appreciation Celebration.
Summer alcohol ban A 24 hour alcohol ban applies in Queenstown’s CBD between 24 December and 6 January. If you’re planning a family picnic or catch up with friends that includes a drink or two in a public place, please follow any signs in the area or check the maps on the QLDC website first. Nobody wants to end up paying $250 just for a couple of drinks.
Libraries Fines Amnesty Worried about your library fines mounting up? Queenstown Lakes Libraries has an easy way to clear outstanding fines and support your local community! For the month of December your local library will happily shelve fines in exchange for non-perishable food items, children’s books, toiletries and vouchers. Each item waives $5 and goods received go to Happiness House. It’s a win-win!
Snap, Send and Solve with QLDC If you spot an issue in the community you can now raise it with Council using an app on your phone called Snap Send Solve. The app is a simple, free and fast way to send QLDC ‘Fix It’ requests, meaning the next time you spot a pesky water leak on the road outside your house or a fallen tree blocking a trail, snap it then send it and QLDC will solve it. You can download the Snap Send Solve app on Google Play and the Apple Store.

Massive drugs bust in Queenstown Queenstown police seized more than 2400 MDMA pills with a street value of about $125,000, as well as LSD tabs, cannabis and more than $5000 in cash, at the end of last week. Officers investigating the sale and supply of MDMA in the area executed a number of search warrants, resulting in the arrest of several people in relation to the supply of class A, B and C drugs. This continues on from previous operations Otago Lakes Central Police have conducted over several months, targeting the sale and supply of various drugs in the area. Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, Acting Area Commander Otago Lakes Central, says: “High levels of MDMA have been detected in the Queenstown water supply, and local bar owners have noticed the effect drug use was having on their establishments and were worried about the safety of their patrons.” About 30 police staff were involved in the operation on Thursday. The arrests included: • A 24-year-old woman facing two charges of supplying class B drugs, as well as supplying cannabis and possession of cannabis for supply. • A 26-year-old man charged with supplying class A cocaine, supplying class B MDMA and possession for supply of cannabis. • A 25-year-old woman charged with supplying Class A cocaine. • A 28-year-old man charged with supplying Class A cocaine. • A 21-year-old man charged with supplying class B MDMA. • A 32-year-old man charged with supplying class A cocaine and offering to supply Class A. “Of additional concern is that several of the drugs seized by Police and tested have come back as being made up of different substances than those they are being sold as, putting those who choose to take them at additional risk,” Enoka says.
Containers and Space for Rent Ph 021 343 653 “It is important to remember that illicit drugs are generally manufactured and/or imported by people who put profit above all else and do not consider the health and well-being of users. “Otago Lakes Central Police are committed to targeting drug dealers in the area who think there is easy money to be made from dealing in drugs within our community. “We are aware that we are moving into the summer season and there will be others who think they can carry out these illicit activities here, but they should be aware that they will be targeted by Police.” • If you have any information which can help prevent offending and reduce the harm caused by illicit drugs you can report to Police on 105, or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Monthly Column Joseph Mooney MP for Southland
December already and in just days we’ll be celebrating Christmas with friends and family. What a year 2020 has been! As we look back on the past 12 months there have been many highs and lows as we continue to live with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Here in Queenstown, it has definitely been one of our most challenging years to date. Two of the biggest battles we have been encountering have been with the Ministry of Social Development’s oversupply and undersupply lists and also Immigration New Zealand. Recent changes to the undersupply list for the Queenstown Lakes District will provide some relief but it does not solve the problem. The announcement of more than 20 jobs being added to the undersupply list will be welcome news for some but there are still many frustrations in the community. It will make the process simpler for those on Employer Assisted Work Visas, but it does not eliminate a lot of the work required in applications. The other issue which still exists is the labour shortage. When Covid-19 struck Queenstown and people lost their jobs, naturally they left as they searched for work elsewhere. We’re now left with a hole which needs to be filled. How we do this is not so simple, but it is great to see initiatives like promoting the overseas experience right at home, right here in the Lakes District. It is a great start but there is more work to be done. We need to be caring for every member of our community, regardless of where they are from. The term for this, which Mayor Boult has used before, is Taura Here. This refers to our migrant workers who have come from elsewhere and have made this place their home and formed a strong bond, becoming an important part of our community. We can do this by amending immigration settings so our Taura Here can continue their lives in Queenstown. I will continue to advocate for solutions in Wellington. We also need an indication from the Government around what is required to open up some travel from Australia. We all agree it needs to be safe, but businesses need certainty to be able to plan. Western Australia as an example hasn’t had a case of Covid-19 for seven months. Our Government needs to be seriously considering a similar approach to how Australian states have opened to one another, our tourism industry depends on it. Parliament has now risen for the year and I’ve had a busy few days meeting with various stakeholders and organisations lately and I look forward to meeting with many more of you in 2021. For now though, I hope you all manage to take some sort of break over the festive period. Christmas is a wonderful time of year, surrounded by family and friends sharing lots of laughs. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN
CBD by Miranda Spary Miranda Spary is a tired, old, has been columnist that we feel sorry for. She used to write a weekly book column in the old Queenstown Times which was read more for the local gossip in it than the book part. She is quite lazy and very grateful if readers send in ideas about what’s been happening locally on miranda@queenstown.co.nz
I went to a terrific staff Christmas bash and discovered I’ve got loads of lovely workmates. They were from all over the world and so much fun and YOUNG. I wish I worked in the office with them, but not only do I not get paid, I don’t even have a desk or chair there.Things are tight at the Lakes Weekly Bulletin and inviting me along to the party was probably a bit of an extravagance, but they certainly saved money on the Santa suit. Our big boss, David wore a red supermarket bag on his head in his role as the ho ho hoer for our Secret Santa, and it worked a treat - economical as anything. Festive? not so much, but a lot of fun. We partied and bowled at the Arrowtown Bowling Club. If you need a great present, a year’s membership is only $40 . After only one game, I was already bowling like a champion, or maybe like a chump.

For another great value present, you can buy a family membership for the Lakes District Museum for only $30, or a library card for free. I’m not joking - I feel so sad for children who don’t have library cards - it’s such bliss being able to choose ANY book at all. While we’re not travelling, a book can take us anywhere in the world. And the museum is brilliant too - no wonder every school in the country tries to organise visits to it. There was a huge crowd in there on Thursday night to buy work at the 30 x 30 museum fundraiser- it’s on for a month and while the real artists’ work is available for immediate purchase, the nonartists’ is a silent auction for a month - get along and make a bid - they are very funny, and some are actually real art! Major outbreak of measles with red dots popping up all over the place. Don’t forget the Alan Waters exhibition at Queenstown Contemporary is opening on Dec 19th for some more real art. I haven’t got measles, but to everyone’s relief, I’ve lost my voice. The cure is to stay home and be quiet, but it’s just so difficult with so many things going on. I’m always on the lookout for a reason to go to Mount Cook, and even though I have no fashion sense, I went there for “Fashion in the Alps” at the weekend. Petra Baghurst was the very good MC, and 72,000 cheers for The Hermitage for providing the venue at no cost, and huge discounts on our rooms. The event raised $72,000 for Breast Cancer CURE. The food was great and the wait staff were sensational - after dinner, we learnt they were actually the research assistants from the cancer lab at Otago University, volunteering their services AND having a terrific time. A well deserved standing ovation for the very over qualified waiters and waitresses. If you haven’t been to Mt Cook, right now is brilliant - the alpine flowers are all out, and there are rainbows of lupins the whole way there. A gaggle of us went on the Glacier Explorers boat trip - mid summer and you can boat around gigantic icebergs that have fallen off the Tasman glacier - it’s utterly extraordinary. Do be quick though - apparently the glacier will be no more within 30 years. By then, superchef Nadia Lim will be about to get the pension (if such a thing is still possible, given how many OAP’s there will be clearing out the coffers before that). She’s going to do a book signing of her marvellous “Marvellous Marvin”, based on the real story of her chickens hatching. It will be at Dorothy Browns on the balcony on Thursday, 14th at 3.30 and children very welcome. And a very happy 10th birthday to Provisions Cafe in the end cottage on Buckingham Street. As many will remember, billionaire Irishman Eamonn Cleary deliberately let the main street’s iconic cottages fall into disrepair and local hero John Martin managed to broker a deal so that the council could buy them and put them in a trust. What a terrific street party there was to celebrate this excellent outcome.

I have an enormous amount of respect for the wonderful work Philip and his team have done in establishing and running this much loved festival, and am really looking forward to spending time in such a spectacular region and getting to know the community,” Sophie said. Philip said he was thrilled with the appointment. “I’ve loved working in Wanaka over the years. The town has a huge sense of ownership of the festival and people so much enjoy the roll-out of shows over the festival week.

BUSINESS UPDATE RemoteTogether festival to help businesses review, redesign and reset for a new world of work.
Mr Yeo says there’s much more to remote working than just ‘‘Zoom and email’’ and RemoteTogether will move people at different stages of the remote working spectrum - from start-up to scale-up - to higher capability.
New Zealand’s first ‘future of work’ festival will be held in Queenstown and help set the stage for Aotearoa to become a global leader in remote and flexible work best practices. Using the lockdown and changing work trends as inspiration, the RemoteTogether festival will be held between the 8-13 March next year and aims be a conduit for accelerated learning, innovation and collaboration for businesspeople looking at how to adapt to changing global work dynamics.
“There needs to be processes and policies around remote and flexible working, a culture of acceptance, high trust and authenticity - so many elements that make it work well,” he says. “Good digital infrastructure, transport connectivity, a great lifestyle, coworking spaces, and existing remote worker communities means New Zealand is an attractive destination for remote worker Kiwis and visitors.” To view the RemoteTogether programme and speakers, book tickets or view the COVID-19 policy/refund guarantee, visit: www.remotetogethernz.com.
The festival will bring together thought leaders and remote/flexible working experts to help attendees review, redesign and reset their strategies and business models for future success. Opportunities for brain gain, ‘side-hustles’ and the gig economy will also be discussed to help personal and organisational development. RemoteTogetherNZ is the brainchild of well-known New Zealand business and events entrepreneurs Trent Yeo, DK and Scott Kennedy. Speakers will come from a range of organisations, including Pukeko Pictures, Wipster, Shopify, Kea New Zealand, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship, Timely, PWC, Collectively, University of Otago, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Musicians and athletes will also share their experiences to provide further cross-learning opportunities. The festival format also differs from the norm – it’s designed as a ‘workcation’ combining upskilling and networking with popup co-working spaces for people to keep on top of their own work. Bookended by weekends, it encourages out-of-towners to stay longer to enjoy the district’s world-class experiences or attend events such as the Motatapu off-road race (6 March), the Crowded House concert at Gibbston Valley winery (13 March), or the Wanaka A&P Show (12-13 March). Festival co-organiser Trent Yeo acknowledges that remote and flexible working isn’t new to workers like the self-employed or digital nomads who’ve been digitally mobile or part of globally distributed teams for years. But now others see the opportunities to adapt their business models. “This year’s COVID-19 crisis created shockwaves, putting our personal health and safety to the test and severely disrupting the way we do business,” says Trent. “The silver lining is that it’s inspired a lot of us to rethink the way we work, creating the largest global “work-from-home” experiment in history which has fast-forwarded us through years of trial and error.

Love Your Leftovers This Christmas Tis the season for eating. No matter how much we (over)indulge on Christmas Day, there always seem to be leftovers. Leftovers are a precious part of Christmas, with many Kiwi families counting on leftovers to feed themselves for Christmas dinner, Boxing Day and beyond. But there inevitably comes a point when you can’t handle another ham sandwich. This is where your freezer steps in. Instead of throwing away your leftovers – freeze them. You may be surprised by just how many Christmas foods can be frozen such as cooked turkey, ham and lamb. Once frozen, the texture changes slightly, so they may no longer be great for sandwiches but will be perfect for using in things like pasta, pies and quiches. With the exception of salads, other leftover vegetables, including new potatoes, can be frozen to be used in later meals. Fill your freezer with the last of your Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies. You’ll thank yourself when you are enjoying a Christmas sweet treat in Autumn.

Too many berries or cherries Free ow freeze them on a tray, then bag them. The texture will be soft once thawed, but they will still be great for topping a pav with.
Always wrap the food well and label it clearly so you know exactly what it is a few months down the track.
There are a couple of things to remember when it comes to freezing. Freezers work like a giant pause button, so the fresher food is when it goes into the freezer, the fresher it will be when it comes out.
