New Zealand has the highest rates of Family Harm in the western world. New Zealand has the highest rates of child abuse. New Zealand has 38 arrests for strangulation before the courts each week. We are failing our Tamariki. Family violence costs the government millions of dollars in lost revenue, services to support and heal, lengthy court delays, traumatised children and adults trying to keep themselves safe. We don’t talk about it, we don’t ask our friends why they communicate with their partners in a certain way, or get involved when our neighbours smash and shout in their homes late at night. We can all be responsible for what is happening in our communities and here at Jigsaw Central Lakes we have been working for years educating and training different sectors around what it is we can all do to help, support and ultimately stop this. Views that we hold about each other need to change, values need to be addressed, conversations need to be had. Jigsaw has just entered into its 25th year of working in family and sexual harm and we will continue to work with families, young people, children, men, women. All who share common bonds; they are living with or have experienced some form of abuse or violence or they are or have perpetrated violence. All working it out, all navigating their life’s experiences. It is not ‘them’ or ‘those people’ it every day people who are your friends, your family, your children, your work colleagues. Our rates of sexual violence in Queenstown have alarmingly shot up over the past couple of years. More and more people come forward to bravely tell their story. This is not about what someone is wearing, or how much they’ve had to drink, this is about the way we are taught to view another human being. What consent means. Why we need to have those hard conversations with our friends about how they talk about women as chattels, how men need to “suck it up” or children don’t hear that stuff because they were asleep. Jigsaw will continue to support anyone who needs to talk about what is or has happened for them in a confidential, safe and supportive environment. We also provide programmes for those who are struggling with their own violence or feel that they want to address how their previous relationships have impacted on the life they have today. To support people around legal processes or just start to walk alongside someone coming to terms with something they were not aware was part of their life. The cycle can be broken. Where are the multi-millionaires?

The article on stuff.co.nz (Growing Queenstown population should be able to pay for infrastructure – 30.07.19), just goes to show how out-of-touch developers and big time hotel operators in Queenstown are! Whether you like or love the Visitor Levy idea, it’s simply not true that Queenstowners are multimillionaires and can afford to pay everhigher rates to cover the cost of tourists.

Yes, the tourist dollar rules Queenstown, but that doesn’t mean everyone who lives here sees their fair share... if big hotel owners don’t want tourists to pay extra, they need to come up with more creative solutions to our infrastructure and environmental problems than pinning it all on the small local population. < than helpful.

Vote Now! lwb.co.nz Is Wanaka better than Queenstown?

RE: to ‘Recycling Rules not for all’ First and foremost, we’re thrilled to hear that you’re putting so much effort in to training others on how to use the new service. Thank you - we need more community leaders like to you to help make the journey towards zero waste a reality. You’re correct that some of our older public recycling bins are not consistent with our new “glass separate” kerbside recycling system. The newer public recycling bins have a separate glass bin and better signage, but the old bins are still collecting mixed recycling and glass together. The reality is that public recycling across the country is generally contaminated and is having difficulty meeting the new tight standards for recycling. Right now we’re working on a contamination plan for all the district’s public recycling bins – this will include how to tackle the public bins through bin audits, signage, education, bin types, etc. The commercial bins are collected privately but our work to educate businesses will help them to do the right thing with their rubbish and recycling. It’s up to the commercial recyclers how

they collect their recycling, but only clean glass that is collected separately can be combined with the glass that’s collected from kerbside bins to be recycled into new bottles and jars. Any contaminated commercial recycling will not be accepted at our processing facility as we cannot put our district’s recycling at risk. We’ve heard some awesome stories about how people around the district are repurposing the old bins. They’ve been turned into planters, storage for animal feed, emergency kits, compost bins, even an outdoor chair! Many people have also dropped their unwanted bins at the Transfer Station which is great. Now that we’ve worked through some of the teething issues, we’re working on a plan to deal with the rest of the unwanted bins. We’ll share more details about that soon. In the meantime, we do recommend the owners of the rogue bins do their bit to help keep the streets looking sharp and take them in until they hear more or drop them off for recycling at the Frankton transfer station. Bob’s Weighed Out I am absolutely gutted that Bob’s Weigh is closing! Where will I go for a bowl of coffee now? (for those of you who don’t know this is an actual bowl of coffee haha!) and besides that, I really enjoyed their breakfasts and for what ANOTHER pizza place!

As if Queenstown and surrounding areas needs another place for pizzas, really? I love pizza but c’mon. On another note if you really do, do Taxidermy, Mary and Bob would you consider teaching?

Facebook / Website comments RE: to ‘Editorial’ Charities stuck in a time warp. What is upsetting is... 1. The amount of money that the various “collectors” take. E.g- “donation week” up to 60% of your donation goes to the “collector”. 2. The Govt fails to financially fund outfits like St Johns Ambulance. 3. The Govt owns and rules the Lottery Board. They receive millions upon millions each week from the cashcow called Lotto. The money raised goes to some very “dodgy” charities.

Call in the Serious Fraud squad RE: Recycling Rules not for all. The amount of rubbish companies dump in the refuse center (i.erecyclables dumped as regular rubbish so they won’t have to pay extra) is huge! Hundreds of tons every week!! Some of that rubbish is actually dangerous to the environment and the people working at the refuse center! And what does the council do? Throw away perfectly good bins. All at tax payers expense.

I’ve been saying this for years! RE: Weird Deli Service. Take the plastic bag and enjoy.

Problem solved

Bob Weills Potato Cakes and Lattes: A heartfelt farewell to Bob’s Weigh Cafe This is a love letter to flat whites and potato cakes. To a warm local atmosphere. To banter. To laughing at people who didn’t quite get the banter. Bob’s Weigh has been a part of my Queenstown life as long as it’s existed, and I feel a little unmoored to lose it. The bright paint, the scales nailed to the walls, the steadfast resistance to hipster cafe culture and corporate cafe culture alike, it all made Bob’s special in a way few places replicate.

When I first washed up in Queenstown back in 2008, I worked at Wakatipu High School and carpooled in with teachers whose workday started far earlier than my own. So, most mornings I’d end up at Bob’s Weigh, enjoying my morning coffee with the fellow who would, years later, become my husband. I ducked into Bob’s with my clunky old laptop to work on job applications, then later to work on my very first novel. It was a quiet spot that didn’t feel dead, the perfect place to squirrel oneself away with headphones and ill-defined literary goals. Then of course came the ice hockey. Anyone who attends Skycity Stampede games will have seen Bob, Mary, and their wonderful staff decked out in team colours. Or if you’ve popped into the cafe during hockey season, you’ve seen the photos, the articles, the support, the love. When I got roped into the NZIHL in 2012, our crew explained that Bob’s was their local and laughed when I said I was already acquainted.

But just because us seat-warmers are shedding a tear doesn’t mean it’s doom and gloom for Bob and Mary. The man himself informs me that this isn’t a sad ending, it’s a chance to try out something new. And when I stopped by to pay my respects on the final day of this much-loved Queenstown institution, I felt a little less sad upon seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces. The reality is that restaurant life is hard. It takes every day of your week during the prime years of your life. So when your local shuts up shop, it may sting, but it means the people who built the place you love are finally having a weekend sleep-in, or maybe visiting their folks for the first time in years.

We’ll miss the pumpkin bread and the cheesecakes, but Queenstown hasn’t seen the last of Bob’s Weigh, whatever form Bob and Mary’s genius (or madness?) takes next. by Casey Lucas-Quaid

WINTER WELLNESS * MEDITATION IN THE LIBRARY

The climate is changing – and so too is the Queenstown Lakes district The Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is one of the first Councils in Aotearoa New Zealand to develop a draft climate action plan to tackle the effects of a changing climate. The draft has been released for community feedback and QLDC wants to know what you think. QLDC policy advisor, Dr Patricia McLean, is leading the development of the plan and says the main objective is to inspire collective action with the community, partners and stakeholders to help the district adapt to and reduce the effects of climate change. “It sets out what QLDC plans to undertake over the next three years, and also how the different sectors in the district working together will contribute to reducing emissions, transitioning to a low carbon economy, and preparing for the disruptions of a changing climate.” “We live in a beautiful corner of the world and are fortunate to have lakes, mountains, ski fields and rivers in our backyard. This is so precious and we need to do everything we can to protect what we have here so future generations can enjoy it too.” “We encourage all parts of our community and all age groups to take part in this feedback process because if Council adopts the final plan, the framework will guide decision-making and drive actions going forward - not only for QLDC and the next Ten Year Plan but also for our wider community,” says Dr McLean. The draft climate action plan is currently available for feedback at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz until 31 August. Anyone can view the plan either online or at local Council offices or libraries. If younger members of your household would also like to provide feedback, they can upload pictures, drawings and ideas to the Submit Ideas section of the webpage.

Ice Blacks to take on Australia’s Mighty Roos here in Queenstown Local ice hockey fans will be delighted to see that tickets are now on sale for the 2019 Trans-Tasman Challenge, a threegame series between the New Zealand Ice Blacks and Australia’s Mighty Roos. Queenstown Ice Arena will host the games on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of September as part of the New Zealand Winter Games. Last year’s Challenge saw New Zealand claim their first-ever series victory over Australia in ice hockey, where the Roos normally play a division above the Ice Blacks. And it wasn’t an easy victory, particularly during the nail-biting Game 2 which New Zealand managed to steal with a 2-1 win. The Ice Blacks weren’t quite able to complete the sweep however, as an impressive comeback quarterbacked by Roos captain Lliam Webster resulted in five unanswered goals and a bit of restored dignity. International hockey is always a highlight when it comes to Queenstown, a fast-paced and hard-hitting sport that sees local Skycity Stampede players taking on some big-name talent from both across the ditch and further overseas. This year, locals Connor Harrison, Braden Lee, Ryan Strayer, Mitchell Frear, Matt Schneider, and Stefan Amston, and Liam Stewart have all been named to the Ice Blacks squad to take on Australia. Though they play in separate divisions, both teams had similar performances at the 2019 IIHF Worlds in Mexico City this April. Australia missed out promotion after a narrow loss to Croatia and finished with a bronze medal.

New Zealand meanwhile started out strong but also finished in third place after dropping games to gold and silver medallists Israel and Iceland. When it comes to making predictions, it’s far too early, especially considering Australia sometimes travels with a shortened bench.

DISCOVER THE QUEENSTOWN APP DOWNLOAD OR UPDATE TO THE NEW QUEENSTOWN APP NOW

Recent Queenstown additions to the Ice Blacks line-up such as Strayer, Schneider, and Stewart will certainly make an impact, although it remains to be seen who will take the starting goaltender role.

Arts+Culture Preview: One Man, Two Guvnors Remarkable Theatre actors are getting serious about their preparations for their next show, One Man, Two Guvnors. The troupe completed a physical comedy workshop last week with renowned drama tutor and acting coach John Goudge. Remarkable Theatre’s Sarah Barham says they’re also working hard on trying not to laugh during rehearsals… “It’s based on an Italian 17th Century commedia dell’arte play [a play that is both scripted and improvised]. It has slapstick/ physical comedy and lots of interaction with the audience. Each night will be different. “Rehearsals are so much fun. One real problem we’re having is laughing at each other… we’re going to need a few more rehearsals before we can perform it with straight faces.” Written by English playwright Richard Bean, the play is set in Brighton (UK) in the 1960s. It follows Francis Henshall, an out-of-work skiffle musician who ends up employed by an upper-class twit and a somewhat complicated gangster. The play premiered in 2011 and was performed and produced by National Theatre, with comedian James Corden (of Gavin and Stacey fame) in the starring role. “It’s very, very clever writing,” says Sarah. “As well as the comedy, there’s some quite tender and quite sad moments.” Sarah says Director Deb Lind was behind the idea to perform One Man, Two Guvnors. She’s a big fan of the play and despite moving to Auckland in recent years, she’s made true on a promise to return to the region to direct it. The play also includes mid-show vaudeville acts, with an Andrew Sistersstyle performance and some terrible magic tricks. Tickets are available on an early bird special until the end of August (via Eventfinda.co.nz). The show runs 21th – 21st September at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall.

Art News Toni Morrison dies aged 88 Nobel-prize-winning American novelist, essayist and editor, Toni Morrison, died on 5th August aged 88. Best known for her incredible novels like ‘Jazz’, ‘Beloved’ and ‘God Help the Children’, she was also awarded the Presidential Medal of freedom by Barack Obama and in 2016 received the Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Literature. She was the first female African-American senior editor in the fiction department at Random House publishing (1967 to 1983), where she championed writers of colour and published the likes of Gayl Jones, Muhammad Ali and Angela Davis. But as a busy single mother of two, she didn’t publish her own first novel until the age of 39. She got up at 4am every morning to write ‘The Bluest Eye’, about a young black girl who dreams of having blue eyes. When it was published in 1970, it didn’t sell well at first but readers praised the strength of Morrison’s literary voice. It was added to the reading list for the City University of New York’s new black-studies department, which boosted sales and helped to launch her career as a novelist. She went on to become of America’s best-known writers and published eleven novels in all, as well as children’s literature and short stories. When she was awarded the Nobel Prize, the Swedish Academy described her as an author “who in novels characterised by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality”.

Gardening Tips for August by Dr Compost/ Ben Elms Dr Compost aka Ben Elms is a permaculture and gardening expert who’s been operating in the unusual Central Otago climate for over 20 years. Funded by QLDC and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters, the Dr Compost project aims to reduce organic waste going to landfill. Got a question? Check out @drcompost on Facebook or benelms.com Here’s eight things you can do for your garden this August: 1. Start sowing seeds indoors, around mid-tolate August. At this stage, we’re sowing crops that require a long growing season. Think: tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants. We want them to be as big as possible before they get planted in the ground. Brassicas are another good option, try the classics like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Sowing more than you need will give you extra to share or swap for somebody else’s unusual heritage varieties. 2. Have a tidy up. Come spring there’s will be too many other things going on. Pay attention to pathways – a tidy path keeps the mind and body peaceful! A pathway that semi looks after itself is gardening heaven. If your pathways are growing weeds, they spread to your veggie beds – at the very least put some old carpet down on your pathways to prevent this. 3. Weeds. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re going to start growing this month and before you know it, you’ll have a big job on your hands. Take action now! Options include mulching with straw, or using plain cardboard to cover your beds and prevent weeds from sprouting. 4. …Left it too late? Got a bed full of weeds? Bash them down or put the mower over them, then all that green material on the veggie bed. Get some of that trusty cardboard and completely cover the bed, leaving no spaces for the light to get through. Then put a 10cm layer of compost on top with a straw mulch to finish. This leaves all the goodness in the weeds to break down and become a future smorgasbord of nutrients for your growing veggies. 5. It’s not too late to get your garlic in. – but be quick! Big cloves mean bigger bulbs. 6. Give some of your fruit trees a tickle up with a good pruning session. Apples, pears and plums can be done now. Choose a sunny day, this helps to seal the wounds naturally. Leave your cherries, apricots, peaches until spring. 7. Sharpen and clean your tools. Hands up if you’ve ever done this… You won’t believe the difference a sharp edge on a spade gives you. Sandpaper off any rust and give it a light oil, ready for action for the year ahead. 8. Take time to sit down in your garden and take it all in. Visualise what you want to achieve this year. Put a wee planting plan together, detailing where you’re going to put what, and when, this year – remember to plan for crop rotation to improve soil nutrients. Happy Gardening. @dr_compost |
