QLDC has recently joined more than 600 other government bodies in declaring a Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEED) at the request of our Extinction Rebellion Queenstown Lakes group. Why did we do this? It is hard to believe, but climate change has been a political and scientific talking point for more than 30 years. Our leaders have actively avoided taking action, focussing on nurturing the health of our financial economy at the expense of our planet. As the school student protesters wisely point out, ‘there is no financial economy on a dead planet’. The health of our biosphere and its inhabitants must come first.
It’s now clear the solutions need to come from us, the people. We environmentalists are not off the hook either, we need to look at where it is best to concentrate our energy. It’s a sad truth that government funding ensures we are incentivised to play by the rules and not rock the boat too much. We all know that we no longer have time to operate within the status quo. How we navigate meaningful action with this potential conflict and still find the funding to do our work is an area which needs careful attention.

Locally, the purpose of the CEED campaign was twofold. One, to encourage the community to turn and face our situation head on. And secondly, to draw attention to the fact that while there is very little argument regarding the facts about our situation from local leaders, there is very little meaningful action resulting from it. This will help us all ‘sort the wheat from the chaff’ at the upcoming local elections in October. Our community needs to face daunting challenges in order to play our role in contributing to solutions. We need to look critically at our penchant for rampant growth in our town, often at the expense of our own community. Our livelihood relies heavily on ever-growing tourism numbers and if we stay on this path it’s very possible the whole system could collapse. If we don’t consider a new plan before this happens, how will our community cope?
We don’t have all the answers and we rely on our community to get on board, join the Rebellion and engage our leaders to find our most effective solutions to increase our resilience going forward. I’ve been wondering: Are those new supermarket bags biodegradable? And if so, where’s the study showing how long it takes for the environment to degrade them? Seems to me that once again, people around here came up with a bandaid solution that ended up making the underlying problem even bigger! How long do they expect people to hang on to those bags if the vast majority is just passing through?
After all this is a tourist town for crying out loud! There are biodegradable plastic bags that’s degrade in a few days being used even in third world countries and yet New Zealand (or at least Queenstown) managed to fall behind yet again! Don’t even get me started on the ‘fake’ recycling scheme

Why do tourists have the right to drive around when they barely know how to reverse and they still have a clean slate to leave the country even if they left someone injured at the hospital or worse, in a graveyard? We should have tougher laws something like: - if there’s financial damage, pay up before leaving the country;
- someone in the hospital, pay their bills if you want to leave the country; - killed someone in an accident? Well tell your family you’ll stay in jail till a judge says you can leave the country (and pay the bills!). But rental companies might have been lining up the right pockets as their customers are always clean as a whistle no matter what tragedy they’re involved in.
The subject here specifically is carparking. We can assume the rules state that the Developer needs “X” number-of-carparks for their development to succeed, but... is there no rule that says that a carpark should also be of sensible dimensions? In this country most cars qualify as mid sized or full sized cars and the darned carparks are so tight that if one tries to park a full sized SUV or work ute,

This one’s for my Planners I write this in the faint hope that a City planner, or an Architect, may read this. I presume that most developers begin by presenting their proposal to an Architect who designs the project around current council planning rules. The Planner reviews this and inevitably they approve some variant of the same.

The panel beaters are the clear winners here but why-oh-why don’t the planners have the courage to influence good design? A few less carparks but of sensible size would be vastly superior. We see other projects done with no carparks at all. Go figure? As residents we have to live with the legacy of poor decision making by planners for much of our lives. You Planners can make positive differences to us all by using your influence toward good (and eye pleasing) design... if you dare.

Tourism Tech Expo coming to Queenstown Startup Queenstown Lakes is making a strategic play to leverage the District’s tourism expertise with the launch of Tourism Tech Expo 2019. The event will be held Friday, 23 August at the Queenstown Memorial Centre to showcase the best in NZ’s tourism, travel, hospitality and accommodation tech sector. The Expo is available to anyone interested in learning more about how the technology sector can assist in diversifying Queenstown’s economic infrastructure. The morning session will feature founders pitching their business to an audience of investors. Following a keynote lunch, the tone switches to demo and client stories where tech exhibitors will showcase how their technology is making a difference with the clients they serve. Companies from across New Zealand will be showcasing their tech, as well as many of the companies currently incubating at the Lightning Lab Tourism Accelerator in Christchurch. The event is a kick-off to a bigger effort underway for the Queenstown Lakes District to foster the growth of a tourism-tech industry. “Looking ahead 5 years from now, I believe Tourism Tech Expo will be a must-attend international recognized event for operators and tech companies in this industry,” said James Burnes, Chief Executive of Startup Queenstown Lakes Trust “For our organization, Tourism Tech Expo 2019 is the first step in building a national profile in this sector.” The efforts to build a tourism tech hub in the District is being coordinated closely with QLDC’s economic development team. “Tourism tech is an emerging sector and we have a great group of companies already finding success,” said Peter Harris, Economic Development Manager for QLDC. “As this niche grows it will help diversify our economy, and local operators can benefit from using the technology to streamline their business.”

Community Input sought for a Strategic Plan for Central Otago Hockey The Central Otago Hockey Association is calling for public feedback on a draft strategic plan that is being developed for the region. Hockey is experiencing higher participation numbers than ever within Central Otago. Practice and match turfs are busy and team/ club support is strong. The Central Otago Hockey Association wants to keep this momentum going and to ensure that the sport continues to be enjoyed throughout the region by players, families and enthusiasts alike. A strategic plan is being developed to address this. The plan focuses on supporting the people carrying out administrative duties, developing facilities that best serve clubs and players and encouraging participation across all levels. The intention of the plan is to focus volunteer energy into the key areas that will help Central Otago hockey develop and cope with the sport’s growth in a positive and proactive way. Arts+Culture Meet the artist: Kinga Krupa Kinga Krupa is a piano teacher and performer. Originally from Poland, she has an honours degree in Piano Performance and Teaching, has performed across Europe and lived and taught in Poland, Spain and Ireland before settling here in Queenstown. LWB asked Kinga a few questions about her piano school… What do you teach at your piano school? I teach music that students like playing, backed with exercises (e.g. scales) to build their technique. They also quickly learn to read music and understand the rules (I always sneak in some theory). This gives them the tools to work on and practice their pieces of music independently at home, which is very important. You’ve lived and taught piano around the world – what’s special about teaching here in Queenstown? The hunger for quality music tuition from both students and parents in Queenstown is amazing! The kids are very creative and parents are open to new ideas. We are building a little community here and can see firsthand how the kids grow in confidence and ability, it is really special! Tell us about your themed concerts… We organise concerts for the kids to give them the opportunity to perform on a grand piano in front of their family and friends. The whole community comes together to make these concerts happen. We choose a theme (the last one was ‘Movie’ themed) and try to involve all the kids as much as we can. When given the opportunity, the children came up with great ideas such as the MC, the camera-action clapper board, ticket collection for the concert like a going to a real movie, dressing up as their favourite movie star, having popcorn and posters. Let their imagination wander and you’ll see miracles! It’s a great way for them to challenge and express themselves in a supportive environment and makes it more than just about music. tThe confidence that they gain is life changing. What do you love about piano? Why should adults and children alike give learning music a try? First of all, it’s fun! Being born into a family of professional musicians I am lucky to have been exposed to music from an early age. I cannot imagine my life without music; it has given me so many wonderful opportunities and friends. It connects people like a language and provides enjoyment to so many others. From a science point of view, learning to play any musical instrument, particularly piano, is extremely good for brain activity, helps improve motor skills, coordination, concentration, cognitive skills and has many more benefits. Piano is also for people of all ages – I have students from 3 years old to 75+ who enjoy playing and to have something that connects different generations is very special. Art News Ireland offers jobseeker’s allowance to artists Is this the new way to diversify the economy and ensure equal access to jobs in the arts? Officials in Ireland have announced the extension of a welfare scheme which will enable artists to focus on their creative work for one year, without having to take part in non-artistic jobseeker activities. The scheme was announced by Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan and Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection Regina Doherty. A pilot has been running for writers and visual artists since 2017, but the scheme will be extended to include other self-employed artists (including musicians) from September. In NZ dollars, the payments are around $345 per week. In a statement, Regina Doherty said, “In Ireland, we hold a very special place for the arts and I hope that through this initiative we can create some breathing space for creative people to flourish.” A report in 2012 estimated that the arts generated an annual turnover of €184 million (around NZ$300 million) in Ireland, however, artists often earn far less than the annual minimum wage.

Abuse of older people on the rise In New Zealand it’s estimated that 1 in 6 older people experience some form of abuse, a figure higher than previously estimated and predicted to rise as populations age, including in Queenstown. Awareness about elder abuse is still largely a taboo topic and often not talked about. Abuse takes a range of forms such as psychological, which harms an older person’s self-worth or wellbeing, financial abuse is on the rise and even health abuse. Aged Care Southland explores the issue and provides support information. What is elder abuse?
If an older person you know is being abused
Older people are a valuable part of our society and should be treated with dignity and respect – yet every year, thousands of older New Zealanders are being abused. Elder Abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elder abuse is a violation of Human Rights and a significant cause of injury, illness, lost productivity, isolation and despair.
Contact Age Concern on 441 3490. Age Concern offers free, confidential, specialist Elder Abuse Services throughout New Zealand. Age Concern works with other agencies such as health services, needs assessment services, the police and banks to ensure the best possible outcome for the older person.
Abuse damages family relationships, financial security, and mental and physical health and increases dependency on health and support agencies. The personal losses associated with abuse can be devastating and include the loss of homes, life savings, health, dignity and security. Abuse can also undermine a person’s self-esteem and confidence. Commonly, there are several types of elder abuse that may occur, such as; financial, psychological, physical and neglect. Often usually more than one type occurs together. Research from the referrals Age Concern receives shows that more than three quarters of elder abuse cases occur at the hands of people’s own family members. There is a fear with older people that if they speak-out they will lose the only social support network they have, especially if the abuser is a relative – yet Age Concern can work with the older people to retain that relationship if that’s what they want.
