Look after yourself and your mates this season. Southern District Health Board would like to welcome all our newcomers to Queenstown for the 2019 ski season. While we can’t guarantee powder days, we can help to make sure you look after yourselves and have a fun, happy and healthy season. When you combine new experiences, living away from home with little support network, flatting, working, budgeting and partying, life can get a bit overwhelming. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you to look after yourself and your mates this season‌ Look after your physical and mental health. Mental health strengthens and supports our ability to have healthy releationships, make good choices and handle life’s ups and downs. Getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising and getting some mindful rest will help to maintain your mental health and wellbeing. Try to get 7 – 9 hours sleep (preferably a couple of those hours before midnight). It is important to eat healthy food and limit the amount of alcohol and other substances you consume. An increase in fear, anxiety, irritability and sadness are warning signs of poor mental health. But if it’s not a crisis, what can you do? Firstly, talk to someone; a friend or your GP. You can also talk to (or text with) a trained counsellor via the free 1737 helpline. If you are concerned about a friend or colleague, just be there for them – sometimes this is all that’s required. Some workplaces have implemented wellbeing support. Southern DHB is really excited that NZ Ski has employed a Staff Wellbeing Advisor at Coronet Peak this season. Ask your employer if there’s someone who may be able to support you and direct you to the right help if needed. The Wakatipu Youth Trust is a great local resource offering support and advocacy for young adults (10 – 24 years old) using trained youth support workers. They can provide links to information, resources and referrals to other social services. Remember to party safe! Be careful what and how much you consume – both alcohol and drugs. There are two standard drinks in a pint of beer or a large glass of wine – more than four standard drinks for a woman and six for a man can be hazardous. Look after each other when you’re out, and make sure you have a buddy to get you home if things go wrong. Don’t drive! Look after your sexual health too – ensure you gain sexual consent and wear a condom – EVERY TIME! Unwanted pregnancy and STIs are stressful and expensive and both may have long-term consequences. Check your health insurance cover before you need to use it, make copies of important documents and put money aside for emergencies. Citizens’ Advice Bureau in Ballarat St provides a lot of information and has free JP (witnessing documents) and legal services. Queenstown is a fun and exciting place to work and play. Get out there and enjoy your season but please remember to look after yourself and your mates.

Matt Harvey from Concord Dawn: Life after Evan. by Lauren Prebble It was at audio engineering school in Auckland that Matt Harvey and Evan Short pooled their equipment together so they could make music, this action paved the way for revolutionary Drum’n’bass band, Concord Dawn.
WN
with row With al ing act a few n to find t about ....
“In the days when you couldn’t make music on the computer. The first two albums we did were on 5m486 with 16 megs of ram and 100- or 200-megabyte hard drive. That kinda stuff is nuts.” Lauren Prebble talked with Matt Harvey, longest standing member of Concord Dawn.
ave you spent LP —much Were time therein many gigs you played as a duo? The manager seemed to split you up a lot. mwell/Wanaka/Queenstown It doesn’t take four hands to DJ, it doesn’t really even take two?! re? If so, what’s your was favourite While Evan still living in New Zealand, he was mostly doing Australia and America, I did Europe and that was kinda the plan g to do down South? was working out, but we just didn’t end up writing any have. I wasand justthat down again at the was difficult. When Evan left it was new music. Communication amicably and very quickly. He was never really super of the year.decided Havingvery a beer/wine touring. He wanted to work on other projects. There was no dmiring theinto scenery whilst having lingering resentment... oh… probably little bits here and there. y good sit. We’ve remained really good friends throughout. I was his best man at his wedding after he’d left Concord Dawn.
ell us a bit LP more about the River — You stayed as the sole member of the band. Did you feel ge Festival obligated and whattowe have stick withtothe original sound? That was one of the things I found difficult. There was a certain forward too? history there between the two of us that I sorta needed to preserve. ll be dropping new stuff, was oldmoving stuff, into different directions, between that, Drum’n’bass not getting tuff and blueand stuff. It’s mypaid firstfor music, I kinda got into a pretty bad place. Anxious music making is not a good thing. I didn’t want to write a at the eventbunch but it’s looking it’s like the same sh*t we use to do either. of tunes thatlike sounded I didn’t really want to be trading off... Oh it’s another Morning light g to be killer! Remix.
LP — You must be over that song r Range Festival is Saturday With that song, I wouldn’t have got to go to Turkey, India, China! Live Europe for 10 years. There could be worse things in the world than February.inGeneral admission having to play that song. Overnight/Ticket $65. LP — 12 years without Evan then, BOOM! You’re doing a tour o ticketdirect.co.nz to purchase with him! Did you have to talk him round? tickets. I didn’t have to talk him into it at all! I was visiting him in Raro and we talked about where Drum’n’bass is at. I said ‘Yeah, what I’m missing is
that hypnotic factor. Drum’n’Bass used to be like that. Not changing k out www.riverrangefest.nz the base line every two seconds!’ He was like ‘F**k yeah! Let’s make more information. some tunes where nothing really changes!’ We did a 4 track EP quite painlessly which will be coming out... July 22nd. I obviously miss writing music with him. I’m looking forward to going on the road with Evan again cos I’ve done a lot of travelling by myself.
LP — Is this the final hurrah for Concord Dawn? Ahh that’s yet to be determined. I thrashed it on the DJ front and it is quite exhausting, as anyone who does that for a living would know! I’ve moved into management. I’m managing ‘Shapeshifter’ and a solo artist called ‘Nick Dow’. That’s in the future, more what I’m looking to do. Evan’s doing computer science stuff and studying while he’s been in Raro. They come back the middle of next year. He’ll probably start some kinda horrible heavy metal band, I’d imagine! Frightfully, frightfully, heavy music! The 20 year Anniversary Tour of Concord Dawn Playing @Loco, July 6th. Get your tickets from cosmicticketing.co.nz – It could be their LAST ONE!!!

Whack the Whinge Away
I read your publication every week and have done so for many years. It truly is an integral part of the community and I know at my work there is always a fight over who gets to read it first on a Tuesday when it is delivered. I have enjoyed seeing how it has developed over the years and am enjoying some of the new content especially the Arts & Culture section so well done. What I am not that pleased with though is the Whinge Page.
I’ve always found this quite a negative unnecessary page and generally full of b*tchiness and one sided views of very trivial matters. Maybe you could run a poll and see what your readers think. Perhaps it could be replaced by a page where people identify and acknowledge positive contributions to our community. Mr Brightside
EDITOR’S NOTE: Thanks for your letter and happy to run a poll on this. We have in the past tried to run the balance to the Whinge Page with a page devoted to positivity and if I recall was called “The Big Clap” however we received so few contributions we had to abandon it. We view the Whinge Page as a good release valve for people who want to let off steam on any issue which could be conceived as a good community service. What you may view as trivial might be to the person concerned, the biggest issue they are facing.
Cold Case Cluedo I am full of a cold and at home off sick as I write this. I am pissed off. How did I catch it? Well it could have been the courier man who sneezed over me while I was signing for a package. It might have been the guy who sits two desks away from me who came to work coughing and spluttering for the morning before he went home sick. Maybe it was the sniffing lady at the café who wiped her nose on the back of her hand while she made my coffee. There
are plenty of people with colds etc around town at the moment so if you do have a cold then either stay at home till you are better or at the least do whatever you can to reduce the chance of someone else catching what you have. Hand sanitisers, covering your mouth with your arm if you are coughing or sneezing, take cough suppressants… do I need to go on! Sick as a Dog
Reply to Emotional Haircut Menopause Bob on Pause - Do not feel alone! I have experienced the same issue time and time again over the past five years. Salons are quick to take your money but can not cut hair for the older generation. I asked them to cut my long hair into a long fringe, short back so I can tuck my hair neatly behind my ears for gym. I have had this style before (refer to Robin Wright in House of Cards). I left the salon with a short fringe, short back and sides!! I am not a man moron. And they wonder why I have not gone back!
I am 55, not 70 so stop giving me a haircut that makes me look older? Who does that? The worst is the salon blames the previous salon..but can’t do no better. I have been to three salons in 6 months..! All useless. If I wanted a mans hair cut I would go to a barber. Do what you are supposedly trained to do..cut hair as per the person hair type and as per our request. Believe it or not we know what we want..and know what suits us..a mans haircut does not work for me! Sooooo Over Bad Hair Salons Robin WRIGHT not ROBIN WILLIAMS.

Facebook / Website comments Reply to ‘Winter Festival’ Editorial Kiwi “ledgends” Trinity Roots and Ladi6. I’ve never heard of them. Legends from where???? Their own minds? What really stuffed the Winter Festival up here in the early 2000s were all the so called “ledgends” or “stars” that came here from Auckland for a week of “freebees”. Thank god we have got rid of that way of thinking. Can’t spell legend Reply to ‘Furious Foreign Exchange’ Wow! Furious foreign exchange, you ARE a well balanced person, with a chip on BOTH shoulders. No wonder you get bad service, the staff, if indeed they are kiwis, can smell your attitude coming a mile off. I would also say go back to where you come from but they probably don’t want you either. WOW 0.1 Reply to ‘Emotional Haircut’ I haven’t been to the hairdresser for 2.5y now but simply just because I can’t afford it. But reading your comments now seems like I’m not missing out... good luck that you do find ‘the one’! Long hair - Don’t care

There are a number of reasons for this however the main one is that Immigration New Zealand unexpectedly received a very high volume of applications between December 2018 and March 2019 and are experiencing a significant backlog. This was exacerbated after the Christchurch crisis in March 2019 when INZ was urgently required to reallocate resources to process visas for friends and families of the victims. We were recently informed that for some visa categories, INZ is still allocating/processing applications lodged in December 2018/January 2019. We have been in contact with INZ on behalf of various

New Recycling Service Information Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. During the past eight weeks while I’ve been writing these articles about waste for Lakes Weekly Bulletin, there’s been a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes to get the new waste service ready to go. Trucks have been built and sign-written, the floors of the transfer stations repaired until new facility builds get underway, drivers hired, txt reminders developed and over 54,000 wheelie bins delivered. Now nearly everything is ready for the start of the new service on 1 July. Everyone in Queenstown and the Wakatipu basin starts with a collection for their red rubbish bin and blue glass recycling bin in the first week. The next week, the rubbish bin and yellow mixed recycling bin will be picked up. The recycling collections will alternate, so each recycling bin will be picked up once a fortnight. You can put the calendar from the welcome pack up on the fridge to keep track of which recycling week it is. Or you can outsource to your phone with weekly txt or email reminders, just go to the QLDC website to sign up. As I said a few weeks ago, the global recycling crisis has highlighted how important it is to look after our recycling and to make sure it’s uncontaminated. “Clean” recycling means rinsing out dirty containers, but it also means putting the right things in the bins. Looking after our glass recycling is especially important, as it only takes a small amount of contamination to send everyone’s glass to landfill. It’s actually pretty easy, because there’s really only one critical thing to remember! Put ONLY glass bottles and glass jars in your blue recycling bin, nothing else.
All other recycling (cardboard, paper, cans, tins, plastic bottles and plastic containers 1-7) goes in the big yellow mixed recycling bin. Rinse out any tins and cans, and make sure the plastic containers have a recycling number on the bottom. We want to keep our recycling as clean as we can, so if in doubt, leave it out. Bin delivery teams are out finishing off the deliveries and dropping bins off to any houses who were missed. If you didn’t get your bins when your neighbours received theirs, call QLDC on 03 441 0499. And get ready to launch your bins the week starting 1 July.

Arts+Culture World’s best SUP athlete at Mountain Film Festival
What we’re in to Human Acts – Han Kang A devastating account based on real events and people of the student uprisings in South Korea, 1980. Beautifully written, but haunting, the story follows events after a viciously suppressed student uprising in Gwangju. A boy searches for his friend’s corpse, a consciousness searches for its abandoned body and years later, those who survived torture and loss battle with their memories, censorship and forgiveness.
Wanaka-based Annabel Anderson is considered the world’s best standup paddle boarder (SUP). She held the world title for six year in a row, won the 2018 Female Performance of the Year award and the title of number one SUP racer in the world (male or female). But alongside her long list of accolades and sports awards, Annabel has had her fair share of adversity. Not least, falling 500 vertical metres whilst skiing at Treble Cone last year, narrowly escaping with her life and suffering a dislocated hip, femoral head fracture, a severely impacted coccyx and numerous other injuries. Ten months on, she’ll be talking about her incredible journey through sport and injuries at the 2019 Mountain Film Festival (28th June – 6th July 2019, Wanaka and Queenstown). “I’ve been asked to be part of the festival a few times, but I’ve never been there to do it until this year. It has the most exciting line-up of stories, films and great storytellers. It’s an insight into how things are done and if you’re engaged in the outdoors and are inspired by what’s on our doorstep, this festival is soul food. It’s a line-up of international standard,” says Annabel. Annabel says she’s most looking forward to films and stories which reveal the hard slog in preparing for epic mountain (and other outdoor) adventures. “We’re a mountain community and if we don’t have that inspiration and aspiration, how do we get outside?” Annabel adds that finding the right aspiration and inspiration has been pivotal to her success. As a high-performance athlete, an advocate for equality in sports and a businesswoman, she has been constantly under pressure to get results. Events like the NZ Mountain Film Festival focus on the passion, the hard work and the small, day-to-day feats which build up to the adventures and athletic achievements we read about. It’s something Annabel has been thinking about a lot as she’s ‘recalibrated’ over the past few months, focusing on making small adjustments to get better.
What’s Happening
“High performance sport teaches you that you have to know yourself really well. The ugly side too – all your triggers and weaknesses. That’s why I have so much empathy with these [Film Festival] stories – almost all of them will have gone through these things, experiences that the general population won’t. That’s what makes the Mountain Film Festival so special – it’s the make-up of the people who have faced nature, obstacles and opportunities. It’s life in the extreme.” The NZ Mountain Film and Book Festival is running in both Wanaka and Queenstown, featuring inspiring stories and epic adventures from the likes of Annabel Anderson, Lynn Hill and Paul Hersey. There’s films, book discussions, talks and workshops. See the full range of events at mountainfilm.nz

COMMUNITY NOTES Kia ora from Frankton library team! Since opening our doors in December last year at Remarkables Park, it’s been a busy few months but we thought it was well past time to say hello! Located on the corner of Hawthorne Drive and Red Oaks Drive, right across from Wakatipu High School, your new library is a great place to visit while grabbing a coffee, doing your groceries or dropping by after work or school! With an ever growing collection of books, magazines, graphic novels, DVDs and more, there is always something new and exciting to explore on our shelves. We hope you have been enjoying the addition of Frankton Library to your local library network. Did you know your membership allows you to return borrowed items to whichever library in the district is most convenient for you, no matter where you borrowed them from? We have new things happening all the time. From special Pyjama Parties to School Holiday Programmes as well as our regular children’s programmes Baby Wriggle & Rhyme (0-2 years) and Storytime for our pre-schoolers on every week, make sure you check out our website codc-qldc.govt.nz or follow us on Facebook (@QTLakesLibraries) to keep up to date with what’s happening. The wonderful Korerotia Maori language group is here every Thursday – it’s free and welcoming to all – and ‘Winter Wellness Meditation in the Library’ is running every second Saturday right through until September. Feel free to drop by, take some time for yourself and try something new. No library card? No problem – everyone is always welcome in the library! We do suggest that you ask one of your local librarians about signing up though, as the free stuff just keeps coming and membership includes heaps of eLibrary services you can access 24/7! Most of all we have been loving talking to our customers and hearing what’s most important to our community so please drop by, have a chat and let us know what you would love to see happening in your library. We want to hear from you! Until next time, The Frankton Library team
