On the cusp of the 45th Queenstown Winter Festival, it’s easy to feel reflective about what it means to our place. My family are South Islanders. I have pictures of my grandparents on the Crowne Range, sitting under the Remarkables, how they honeymooned in Eichardt’s and grew up with stories of my father’s holidays here. It was a different place back then with only around 1300 residents I think. My own early days in Queenstown hark back to the table dancing at Chico’s and the Casbah but more recently I’ve taken on the role of Director of the Real Journeys Queenstown Winter Festival; something that has been part of our community annually since 1975. Since its beginnings, Winter Fest has reflected the essence our place; our pioneering nature in the annual Dog Derby, our adrenaline fuelled appetite in Birdman or mountain biking on snow, our unparalleled hospitality, our melting pot of a community and our sense of fun. Festival celebrates our winter starting, our mountain resorts opening and creates opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate our beautiful spot in the world. The Real Journeys Queenstown Winter Festival is By Queenstown, For Queenstown, Showcasing Queenstown. Queenstown is at the core of everything we do and always will be. From an events industry perspective, it’s difficult to express how lucky we are to have something that reflects our place so uniquely – just like the New Orleans Mardi Gras, Munich Oktoberfest, Napier’s Art Deco Festival, Wellington’s WOW and Auckland’s Pasifika - we exist to celebrate our unique spot in the world and that has a huge value attached to it, attracting visitation, smoothing out seasonality and boosting the local economy. However, that’s not why we exist – our community is. In a climate where we often feel like we’re struggling against rising costs, congested traffic and increased rates, it’s important to have something that belongs to us. I’m aware that some may feel that Festival has become commercialised and therefore not ours anymore. I ask that you take another look. All those logos we sport are local companies. The staff and volunteers we develop are locals. The suppliers we use are local. The enormous support we get from our business community from supported bed nights to prizes for our participation events. Festival provides four days of free entertainment in arguably the most beautiful setting in the world. We wouldn’t exist without Queenstown. It is everything we are. On Thursday our annual celebration kicks off with a beautiful Matariki Hikoi around our streets, our festival Mihi Whakatau, the annual business lunch operated by the Chamber team, the classic Hospo Race – this year supported by Steamer Wharf and music from Kiwi legends Trinity Roots and Ladi6. The fun continues through to Sunday with 40+ events to get amongst from lakeside to mountain top. We invite you to fully immerse yourself.

Get ready to launch your bins Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. There’s less than two weeks to go until the new rubbish and recycling collections start on 1 July. The service starts for Wakatipu residents with a collection for your blue glass recycling bin and rubbish bin in the first week. The yellow recycling bin and rubbish bin will be picked up the following week. You’ll have noticed that you now have a separate blue glass recycling bin. The most important thing to remember about your recycling is this - ONLY glass bottles and jars go into the blue bin. Your mixed recycling goes in the big yellow wheelie bin, and the rest goes into the red rubbish bin. Are we being a little bit anal about ONLY glass bottles and jars in the blue bin? The answer is YES! But I want my drinking glass or broken window to be recycled. Sorry - we don’t have a way to recycle those other types of glass. Only glass bottles and jars can be recycled into new glass bottles and jars at the O-I factory in Auckland. Anything other than a glass bottle or glass jar is a contaminant which can affect the production process. To get a bit technical, different types of glass, eg drinking glasses, heat-proof glass and window glass, have a different chemical composition to bottles and jars. Although they don’t look different to us, those different types of glass are not a raw material for new bottles and jars. Heat-proof glass in particular doesn’t melt in the furnace, and can either jam machinery or cause flaws in new bottles. Lids, crockery, plastic and general rubbish also cause problems in the glass recycling process. I was lucky to visit the O-I glass recycling factory in Auckland a few years ago. It’s noisy and full of conveyor belts and roaring gas burners. Viscous liquid glass like glowing lava is dropped into a mould to become red-hot bottles. The bottles are shuttled around on

conveyor belts as they cool, losing colour and slowly turning into the beer and wine bottles we see on the shelves. It’s a highly industrial, complex and also beautiful process to make objects that we take for granted. That’s the future for our glass bottles and jars, so long as we do the right thing with our glass recycling. Rinse your glass jars if they’re sticky with food like peanut butter or tomato paste. Put ONLY glass bottles and glass jars in the blue recycling bin. And remember to put lids, drinking glasses, crockery, Pyrex (heat-proof glass) and window glass in the rubbish bin. Real recycling is about quality, not quantity so if in doubt, leave it out. Meet One of Queenstown’s Volunteers Queenstown has so many generous people who donate their time to worthy causes in the region. National Volunteer Week is about recognising and celebrating these people; people like Kirsten Dennison, who assists the Cancer Society, as well as working full-time as a Private Bank Associate at ASB Bank. Between her full-time job, family life and trying to keep fit, Kirsten manages to find time to volunteer for local charities and organisations. She began volunteering at the local sports clubs her children were involved with and now that her children are older, she assists the Cancer Society, St John’s and the RSA. Kirsten says she was inspired to help the Cancer Society after her father was diagnosed with cancer and she found the Society’s information brochures useful. “The Cancer Society is there to support people in need, not just the person with cancer, but also the family and I think that’s invaluable. “Unfortunately, not everyone has family here, so support is a big one – preparing a meal, keeping someone company, driving them to appointments or picking up scripts. Even supporting an out-oftown family who may not know where the pharmacy is.” Kirsten’s role is Group Leader for Supportive Carers, she arranges meetings for other volunteers, does admin work and organises coffee groups as well as helping people in the community. She says she has no medical background and that there’s volunteer roles for people will all kinds of skills and backgrounds – from cooks to drivers and Supportive Carers. What’s Kirsten’s advice for people considering volunteering? Just do it!

This year’s theme, chosen by Volunteering New Zealand, is “Whiria te tangata – weaving the people together”. What we’re in to

The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra are bringing a full orchestral jazz concert to the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall for their Jazz in Concert extravaganza on 22nd June.

Artist Paul Martinson Biomorphic birds and exotic fish floating in light-bulbs… the work of Paul Martinson is primarily realist, but some of his well-known works have a distinctive surreal twist.

The 16-piece ‘big band’ line-up will be joined by special guest James Tait-Jamieson, a well-known sax player and jazz singer from Palmerston North. James has performed regularly on the Las Vegas Strip, in front of audiences at Caesar’s Palace, The Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas, and Mandalay Bay.

Born in New Zealand in 1956, Paul studied an NZ Certificate of Science in Biology at Palmerston North Polytechnic and went on to become a research technician, focussing on nature – this intimate knowledge of nature is perhaps where some of the genius behind his realist paintings of native birds come from. His work evokes the mystery of science and nature, and harnesses the power of a natural colour palette.

Together with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, James will perform big band instrumental classics from the likes of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Buddy Rich; as well as vocals from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Michael Bublé, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Sarah Vaughn. James says he’s “really looking forward” to performing with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra. He performed with the band at the Queenstown Jazz Festival two years ago, “they’ve got a really good rhythm section and a lot of passion,” he says. “This is a stand-alone event and I’m flying down especially for it. I’m really looking forward to playing with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra again, I had a lot of fun last time. “I don’t think I’ve been in Queenstown in winter before, so that will be a treat,” he adds.

Paul’s work can be found in both private and public collections throughout New Zealand, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa collection. You can check out a selection of his work here in Queenstown, at Artbay Gallery on Marine Parade.

James grew up in Palmerston North and studied at the New Zealand School of Music, before completing a graduate programme at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He then returned to New Zealand and has since performed with The Bob Ptet at the Lido Café (New Zealand’s longest running jazz gig), legendary comedy trio Hot Club Sandwich and the Rodger Fox Big Band. James’ highlights over the past few years have been two Arts on Tour New Zealand tours, two trips to Norfolk Island with Andrew London, two trips to Fiji to perform with blues singer Mahia Blackmore’s Paradise Band, and a performance at the 2017 Monterey Jazz Festival in California with the Rodger Fox Big Band. James is currently working on his first recording under his own name – a Michael Bublé-style jazz vocal album with a big band and strings.

What’s Happening

The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2011 by a group of jazz musicians residing in the Wakatipu area. All 16 members have extensive musical backgrounds and the band has played at many events around the region.
