Much is often said about “fake news” these days and boy! there has been a lot of it around in the lead up to voting on the Visitor Levy referendum, so let’s stick to the facts. No one disagrees that convincing Central Government to return a portion of the GST from tourism revenue to this district would be a great outcome. However, for good and proper reasons Central Government has been very clear that will never happen. If Government and the Treasury agreed to it, it would open the flood gates to similar requests from all over the country. The reality is that the GST take – along with other Government revenue, is required to pay for all the services Central Government provides such as healthcare, the state highway network and education. So in the absence of that, Government has supported our Council’s push for a visitor levy as a source of new funding. We have one opportunity to get a sustainable funding model in place for the future. If we lose this opportunity I highly doubt that it will be available to us ever again. The door will be closed. Therefore, it is imperative that we all exercise our democratic right to vote, one way or the other, for a visitor levy through the current referendum. Failure to adopt the present opportunity will leave Council compromised in its ability to provide the infrastructure required for the current resident and visitor population, let alone what may come in the future. In short, the choices before us are to put up with further congestion and diminishing levels of service – and all the negative effects which will flow from that, or face a very significant increase in rates, or vote in favour of a visitor levy. I have also heard some are minded not to support the introduction of the proposed levy because it currently doesn’t address how freedom campers will contribute. We’ve been very clear that although the current proposal won’t apply, we are acutely aware of the need for this group of to make a contribution. I can assure you that council officers are working on appropriate mechanisms to ensure that happens alongside this proposed levy. Whichever way you wish to vote, if you haven’t already voted please do so. For those who are rate payers, your papers have been mailed to the same address that your rates invoices go to. Please take into account the slower mail delivery times than what we are used to. If in doubt drop your votes into the Council Offices in Queenstown or Wanaka right up until noon on 5 June. For those who are not ratepayers but are permanent residents in the district you need to go to the Council offices, either in Wanaka or Queenstown, with proof of residency (such as a power bill), and cast a special vote. I implore you to do so. I say again, this is our opportunity to adopt a model which will substantially change the future direction of our district.

WThe blue bins wah wah wah! Why can’t they be recycled wah wah wah! There’s been so much complaining about these blue bloody bins that no one is even talking about the GREEN ones! Remember those? Remember those green bins which Allwaste used to look after? You’d put your garden clippings in there, give them a call when it was full, roll it to the curb and they’d pick it up! Allwaste discontinued this service in Decemeber 2018 but left us with these bins! I mean sure these green bins were definitely handy when they were getting
picked up but I’m certainly gonna struggle getting this bin into my SUV when it’s full. I fear the blue bin will be going straight next to the useless green bin in our backyard. It’s a big bin stocktake! Can we please re-enstate the greenwaste pick up? Unofficial Parking Warden Parking team. Can we sort out the huge amount of abandoned vehicles in town please? If you walk along almost any street in or near town you’ll find many abandoned vehicles with Regos months or years out of date. Clearly abandoned. But no one ever does anything about them unless you email council directly.
Can you not send a dedicated team member to check these all out? It would free up lots in long term parks for hard working locals. And, I encourage everyone to check as they walk through town and report these cars to council so we can park again! Perma Parkers

Waste & Recycling Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract.
This is the fifth in the weekly series. It’s amazing how much change passionate community groups can achieve with just a little bit of funding. This week, the first ever grants from QLDC’s new Waste Minimisation Community Fund were announced. The community asked for more support for community waste reduction projects during the Waste Minimisation and Management Plan submissions last year, and the council responded with a new $50,000 fund. Single use cups and dishes are targeted by two of the projects. Dishrupt was founded by Sustainable Queenstown to replace single use cups and dishes at Queenstown events with reusables. Dishrupt gets amazing volunteer support at events plus business buy-in. Their grant will go towards a service and education trailer so they can go to more events. Sustainable Queenstown co-founder Esther Whitehead says Dishrupt TM is about making disposability a thing of the past, and she’s thrilled with the grant. Over in Wanaka, a group of cafes, Wanaka Hospo Goes Eco, is also working to make single use coffee cups a thing of the past. They came together after last year’s One Summit and identified takeaway coffee cups as the top priority. Their goal is to be SUCC Free (Single Use Coffee Cup Free – love that acronym) by 2022. The group are bringing the deposit cup system ‘Again Again’ to Wanaka. Their grant will help fund a behaviour change and education project to support it, working with Plastic Free Wanaka and ONE New Zealand. Again Again exploded in popularity after its introduction in Wellington in 2018. In its first two weeks, it saved 1,500 cups from going to landfill. For a $3 deposit, you get a reusable stainless steel cup with silicon lid and recyclable cardboard sleeve. The cup can be swapped for a fresh cup or refunded at any participating café. The other exciting projects are: • “Waste Free Wanda”- educative and entertaining waste free performances from award-winning children’s musician Anna van Riel • Secondary school waste free menstruation education with Kate Meads • Autumn Apple Drive turning surplus fruit into a shared bounty So if you want to make something happen to reduce waste, get planning because the council is planning to do it all again next year. COMMUNITY NOTES Queenstown Mountain Guides. Skiing and snow boarding in the backcountry is an exciting and rewarding activity and in recent years we have seen an explosion in the number of people interested in getting into the backcountry. To safely manage the risks of travelling through avalanche terrain it is important that backcountry travellers have the right training. Queenstown Mountain Guides has been offering avalanche education for skiers and snow boarders for the past 4 years and will start its winter avalanche education programme in late June. “We employ professionally qualified mountain and ski guides working in the industry as heli-skiing guides, backcountry ski guides and ski patrollers. We offer three different avalanche education courses ranging from a 1.5 day avalanche awareness course through to a 6 day course including a qualification based from a mountain hut on the Tasman Glacier.” Our courses are appropriate for beginners through to advanced backcountry recreationalists. For beginners doing an avalanche course before going into the backcountry is critical for safety. For experienced backcountry skiers and snowboarders a course is a good way refresh knowledge and keep up with the latest skills and techniques. On a course you will learn how to read an avalanche forecast. Reading the avalanche and weather forecast should be part of every backcountry recreationist’s daily routine. Every morning a new avalanche forecast is issued by a professional forecaster. This forecast will inform you about the current danger rating, the specific avalanche problems and the slopes to avoid. This is all part of the pre trip planning and information gathering that is required to stay safe in the backcountry. The tough decisions about what is safe and not safe to ski often happen at home before you head into the mountains. An avalanche course will also teach you to recognise dangerous conditions and how to manage avalanche terrain. Recognising safe terrain and using safe travel techniques is one of the most important tools we have for minimizing risk in avalanche terrain. Terrain is constant and avalanches only start on slopes steeper than 30 degrees (sometimes 25 degrees in very unstable conditions.) It’s possible to be safe and have fun by not riding on or under slopes steeper than 25 degrees. Another important part of the course is learning how to use an avalanche transceiver, a shovel, and a probe. If an avalanche does happen and someone is buried its not enough to just have the correct equipment (a modern 3 aerial transceiver, steel shovel, and avalanche probe) you also need to know how to use this equipment efficiently. If you are dug out of the snow within the first 15 minutes you have a 90% chance of survival, after this small survival window your chances of survival drop dramatically to a 30% survival rate at 30 minutes. 15 minutes is a very short time to find someone with the transceiver, and then dig them out. It’s important to learn the advanced transceiver, probing, and shoveling techniques required to extract a victim quickly. A lot of participants on our courses have been told by their friends that they can only come into the backcountry with them if they do a course first. Its wise to only ride in the backcountry with others that have a good avalanche education. Your backcountry partners are going to contribute to decision-making and if disaster strikes, they are your rescue. If you call for outside assistance the rescue party may take over 1 hour to reach you… this is well outside of the survival window. Your backcountry companions are your best chance for surviving if you are buried in an avalanche. No matter how skilled and experienced you are there are still risks when you ski and ride in avalanche terrain and it’s important to use a wide margin of safety. Sometimes the best decision is to completely avoid the backcountry until avalanche conditions improve. Stay safe out there this winter! Southern Lakes NZ Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) The Southern Lakes NZ Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) was established in 1970 and is part of the national body established in 1937 representing and speaking for hunters. The club meets monthly at the Bowling Club in Arrowtown (7pm last Thursday of the month) and works in collaboration with the Department of Conservation (DOC) in efforts in the region in particular managing access and wild animal populations including pest control. The local club manages 65 stoat traps in Steele Creek (up in the Greenstone Valley) and is custodian for two decommissioned DOC huts that are available to stay in for hunters, experienced trampers and fishermen. Apart from a good social calendar, hunter training and education, the club welcomes potential members new to hunting or maybe people just moved to the area and keen to find out more about where to go or just meet like minded people. There are still spaces left for the upcoming “Hunts Course” carried out over 3 weekends starting 8th June. A popular course for all ages and backgrounds educating (new and existing) hunters about harvestable wildlife and the principles of conservation, wildlife and outdoor safety as well as safe firearms handling and navigation. Arts+Culture New comedy show taking off

Remarkably Funny’s monthly open mic comedy show is taking off. The show features local comics, some of whom are trying out stand-up comedy for the first time. Hosted at Yonder, every show so far has sold out and organisers are encouraging keen comedy fans to book ahead. Tickets for the next show, on 13th June, are available from Eventfinda.co.nz for a cool five bucks. The next show will be MC-ed by stalwart of the Christchurch comedy scene, Snap presented by Ruse Websites (yes, that’s his real name, he sold his original name for a gimmick). Snap’s well-known as a former radio show host and current organiser of a series of comedy gigs and festivals across Christchurch and the lower South.

“It’s really nice to get away and do something in Queenstown,” says Snap. “It’s such an international town, performing in Queenstown is like performing overseas – if you do a lot of Kiwi jokes you’ve got to set them up so that, for example, a Norwegian guy knows what kind of place Palmerston North is.” Snap is in town for his solo comedy show, ‘Pretty Good Jokes’ at Attiqa (Sunday 16th June, 7pm) and the three-time Best MC award-winner will also run an MC workshop, “to help grow the scene and share skills to keep this good stuff going.” “There’s a big difference between a comedy set and being an MC.
