This coming long weekend, May 31st - June 3rd 2019, Queenstown will be illuminated with art, performance, sculpture and a myriad of lights for the fourth LUMA Sensory Experience. Over 50,000 locals and visitors from all over the world attended LUMA last year, which transformed Queenstown’s famous Gardens and lakefront into a dazzling display of glowing art. The festival is free… I’ll say that again, it’s FREE, showcasing a collection of stunning light sculptures and installations from New Zealand and international artists, all designed to take people on a mystical journey whilst stimulating their creative senses. This will be like falling down the rabbit hole right in your own backyard. LUMA is a community event. Supported by regional businesses and organisations, it’s put together by a dedicated bunch of volunteers. People from all over Queenstown get involved, from schools, businesses and volunteer groups. Alongside magical installations and performances, there’s a heap of things to do and enjoy. A total of 34 installations, multiple performances and more lights than you can possibly imagine will be displayed throughout the Gardens area. The team behind Queenstown’s Guerrilla Drive-In will deliver a free outdoor cinema, showing a selection of short films and features each night from 6pm and the LUMA Lounge will deliver mulled wine and some hot munchies will keep you warm. Other highlights include deep forest experiences, multi-sensory light installations and video projections to take the best of you out of your comfort zones. From creepy monsters to magnanimous gnomes, live music to real fairies, you might have to visit more than once to take it all in. People are drawn to Queenstown to enjoy its many outdoor adventures, however this eventis about putting the spotlight on our creative scene and encouraging the wider community to interact and get involved. The need to diversify what Queenstown offers is real and LUMA aims to offer something totally different, an event which captures the imaginations of adults and children alike. In a town where tourism takes precedence and all too often activities are designed to capture the tourist dollar, this is an event designed for you, the people who live here, by us, the people who live here too. So, dress warm and get amongst it this weekend, any time from 5pm until 10pm. If you like what you see, donate a few coins or tap your card to help keep LUMA glowing this year and into the next.

Thank you Queenstown Last Sunday, 19th May, Barmuda ran a spaecial event TABOO to raise awareness about ,and funds for Mental Health charities. Thank you Queensotwn and everyone who attended. It was an absolute smash success, we were busy from the moment barmuda opened their doors at 3pm . Everyone was talking all things mental health either themselves personally or sharing stories of loved ones which was our biggest aim and focus so we are absolutely thrilled. We were at capacity from then on till 4am close! Que outside the door, queenstown really showed up for Mental health awareness and we had a lot of people coming up and thanking us for putting on such a event for such a cause. Reaction was hugggge We will defiantly be returning again for another taboo :) We are still counting donations as they are still rolling in but at last count we had raised $6,800

Which is incredible, half will go to our New Zealand charity LIFELINE, half back to a U.K. charity supporting children through loss, and educating them on emotions from a young age. Making change at the route. Event organisers: Amy Fraser, Tayla Budd, Harry Hume

Bloody he’ll mate, you sure you weren’t raised in communist China? I’ll walk on whatever side of the road is the sunniest or most interesting thanks and if that loses me some good citizen credits from our dear leaders, then so be it. Or until I’m sent to re-education camp, obviously. Rich

Feedback - Bikers and cars don’t mix

Sorry, but what else would you expect when you put a downhill mtb park in the middle of town and offer next to nothing in the form of bike lanes, bike paths or secure bike storage in town? Yes they may be acting dangerously, but did you expect people to fly down a mountain at mind numbing speed risking life and limb with adrenaline levels through through the roof, and get off their bikes and walk home from the base car park? I think its someone in the town planning dept that needs to pull their head in, and stop blaming visitors for doing the things they were enticed to come here for. If you want a real sense of bikes and cars not mixing, try renting a bike and riding out to 7 Mile bike park, and have a real fear for your life after battling the road with cars, trucks, busses and motor homes with zero

It might well be beneficial for those who ride bikes to remember that NZ law requires them to wear helmets, obey the road rules and be considerate of others especially those walking on footpaths. That while the NZ Police in Queenstown appear to have a relaxed attitude to enforcing these laws (I have seen them drive past while bikers are racing around with out helmets) P might do well to remember that when bikers who enjoy doing wheelies and and whizzing past at breakneck speed and often straight down the steps without due consideration for others. That as a result they have to be carted of to the medical center or hospital and put their scrapped skinned hands hands out for ACC ,its the New Zealander Taxpayer who foots the bill. P*** Off

There seems to be universal agreement that our infrastructure is groaning under the strain and that everyone wants more - more funding for the arts, funding for parks and reserves, better public transport and on and on it goes. In other words better services but with less tourism that can pay for it and locals certainly don’t want to pay for it through dramatically higher rates. If not from more tourism, where is the money coming from to pay for this? Downtown Queenstown and Arrowtown are going to be for tourists as they come here for the views and all the services are easily located. Visitors don’t frequent Frankton and Five Mile leaving that for locals and the retailers know this which is why all the local services are there. It’s sad that downtown Queenstown doesn’t have local businesses but if local businesses can’t afford the rent no amount of artificially trying to engineer a different outcome is going to change it. The Chinese Amway Conference was a great idea last year, we need more of those ideas not less. David

Waste & Recycling Photo Credit: Si Williams Photo of Warbirds with one of our recycling flags.

Community-owned enterprise Wastebusters is helping residents and tourists recycle effectively and moving our district towards zero waste, as part of the new Queenstown Lakes District waste services contract. This is the fourth in the weekly series. Recycling is a good thing, but as we like to say at Wastebusters, “if recycling is the answer, we’re asking the wrong question.” Recycling on its own isn’t going to get us to zero waste and a circular economy. To make real progress towards zero waste, we need to rethink first, before reducing, reusing and before we recycle. Rethinking the status quo is challenging. Forging a new path is much harder than following others. Minister Eugenie Sage spoke in Queenstown last week at the “Kai and conversations” event hosted by Sustainable Queenstown. She recognised the great work being done by people on the ground who want our district to live up to its “clean green” promises. Minister Sage is moving to make the recycling industry more sustainable. She announced a new plan this month to

improve kerbside and commercial recycling, reduce contamination and to increase the options for making new products out of recycling in New Zealand. Until now, central Government has been mostly hands-off with recycling, so it’s really positive to see new leadership on a national level. Businesses are rethinking their packaging so they can reduce their waste. I met up with Tanja from The Chocolate Workshop/ Wanaka Chocolate this week, who has been on a journey to find minimal and recyclable packaging which met legal and practical requirements for her products. Packaging is a mine-field of misinformation and tricky decisions, which can be very timeconsuming for a small business to navigate. The solution for her chocolates was sourcing food-grade recyclable cardboard boxes cut to fit her product. It made me think about how hard it is for small businesses to choose sustainable packaging and how we

could support them better. If you’re a small business on that journey, you’re welcome to contact me on gina@wastebusters.co.nz Just in the last couple of weeks, so many groups doing amazing things to rethink waste have been working with our team at Wastebusters. From Wanaka cafes looking for a joint solution to take-away disposable coffee cups, to Luma and Warbirds over Wanaka minimising single-use items at their events, and a new Wastebusters community recycling centre starting up north of Auckland, they’re all trail-blazers finding new ways to cut waste. And the best thing is they’re doing it in ways that make our communities more fun and vibrant places to live.

Gina Dempster,

Communications Manager for Wastebusters

Arts+Culture Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

What’s Happening

31st May - 3rd June Marine Parade, Queenstown Free

Artist Anita May Blanchett is known for her deliciously dark still-life oil paintings, hyper-real images of boats and detailed portraits. But she hasn’t always been a full-time artist. Anita has trained as a classic ballet teacher and worked in the fitness industry as an international presenter; the impetus to paint seriously didn’t come to her until later in life. “I’ve always loved art, but it wasn’t something that was encouraged when I was growing up. I went to a Catholic girls’ school where we studied Latin, English, Maths, Science.”

31st May - 3rd June Queenstown Memorial Centre Tickets from $20 + gst via eventfinda.com

She did a one-year school certificate in art and was encouraged by her art teacher, but went on to work in a corporate world, designing logos and working in visual communications. It was an “epiphany” in Florence, Italy when Anita was 36 years old which made her realise that she wanted to paint seriously.

She says the sell-out exhibition was the “beginners luck” which helped her realise that she was on the right path and that the real work was about to begin. She reconnected with Tim Wilson and undertook a four-year apprenticeship in which she learned about the intrinsic nature of oils which give Tim’s work his trademark iridescent light. But while Tim’s landscapes dance with living light, Anita’s developed a style which captures a moment in time. The backgrounds to her subjects are often dark and have depth in a way which starkly contrasts Tim’s style. “We come from opposite places. He focusses on light, while I focus on the dark. I like the light in the dark. The alchemy of bringing light into the darkest parts of ourselves and the growth and depth that allows.” Anita says the generous encouragement and support of Tim and others has been pivotal to her artistic development (“It’s like the log burning next to the log that’s burning brightly,” she says). As well as continuing with her own artwork, Anita now mentors and encourages other artists and is part of this year’s LUMA Gnome Alley project (see Art News for more information). Anita Blanchett is solely represented by the Tim Wilson Gallery (45 Beach Road, Queenstown). You can find out more about her work online at anitablanchett.com.

MUSIC. Michael Hill International Violin Competition Watch the world’s best young violinists compete for their place in the finals. Includes ‘Insider’s Guide’ discussions preperformance, informing curious audience members what to listen out for.

CRAFTS. Macramé Workshop Make your own plant hangar using the art of macramé – knotting string into decorative patterns. Materials and refreshments included.

“I think if you’re going to have a wake-up anywhere, it’s going to be Florence! I was sitting outside a restaurant, taking in the scenery and it occurred to me: What am I doing with my life? I’ve always wanted to be an artist!” It was meant to be. When Anita returned to New Zealand, she met renowned landscape painter Tim Wilson at a dinner party and told him she wanted to paint: “Well, why the f*ck don’t you then?”, he told her. She spent seven years developing her technique and in 2000, held her first exhibition featuring a wide range of styles (“it looked like the work of thirty different artists,” says Anita.)

SCIENCE. Lab in a Box Innovation Queenstown is bringing Lab in a Box back to Queenstown. A lab will be placed on Marine Parade, inside of which there’ll be luminous science experiments and demonstrations by local high school students. Part of LUMA light festival.

Art News Something Gnomally Different New at this year’s LUMA Light Festival (Queenstown Gardens, 31st May – 3rd June) is Gnome Alley. Thirty gnomes have been rounded up and fostered by renowned artists including Anita May Blanchett and Tony Cribb, who have painted and transformed them ready for display at the festival. Instigator Duncan Forsyth says the project is something “we’d not gnomally do.” “It’s a little bit twisted, a bit different. The artists were given no constraints so we’ve got all sorts – an astro-gnome, a homeless gnome, an ice cream gnome… they’ll be on display at LUMA, in an alley near the tennis courts.” “Gnomes are known to wander, so they’ll have keepers to stop them wandering off,” Duncan adds. All of the gnomes are being auctioned off to raise money to fund and support emerging artists at next year’s festival. To find out more or to capture your very own fancy gnome, check out luma.nz/installations.

COMMUNITY NOTES What’s your hurry?

Queenstown Lakes Women

With the winter season just around the corner and those icy/gritty mornings, it’s a good time to remind everyone to slow down, watch your distance and drive to the conditions.

The Queenstown Lakes Women in Business group has organised Queenstown’s first ‘unconference’. The event promises “all the best bits” of a conference, minus the boring speakers and bad coffee. The participants create the agenda and the group has arranged a ‘pay it forward’ scheme so that women can pay for another’s ticket to ensure everybody who wants to go can. Held at the Sherwood in mid-June, the unconference is the first event of this scale organised by the Queenstown Lakes Women in Business group but it has already sold out.

GRIT

The group started on social media in 2018, led by local ladies Jane Guy, Josie Debenham, Charlotte Winkel and Erin Jackson. It’s open to anyone who identifies as a women and aims to help women network, share ideas and learn through regular meet-ups and events.

SLOW DOWN *

The group has already organised a workshop on the basics of accounting software Xero, an introduction to Te Reo Maori class and a ‘Let’s Talk About the F*ck Ups’ panel discussion. Find out more via @Queenstown Lakes Women on Facebook.

Technology will not save us STOCKTAKING SALE HUGE DISCOUNTS! Houseware Glassware Candles Cleaning Products Kitchenware

Every day we pick up a page, connect to the web, or turn on the TV, we see the myriad of ways in which we need saving. From climate change stressing our global environment, to consequences of growth stressing our local communities, not to mention individually just being stressed about it all. Technology, often seen as a magic wand to be waved to make all our problems disappear, doesn’t seem to have done the job yet. As a confirmed member of the sci-tech club I spend my time messing with Artificial Intelligence (AI for short), mucking with smart technologies, and too long without a psi function sends me into Greek letter withdrawal. But I’ll be the first to tell you that technology isn’t a magic wand, the cold hard fact is technology alone will not save us. The unfortunate news is that to confront the host of challenges we’ve face, we’ll have to save ourselves. That will require collective behavioural change at every level: as individuals, families, communities and nations, and as humanity entire. We know what we have to do to create behaviour changes. Again, pick up any page, connect to the web, or turn on the TV and you’ll find no shortage of information on how we need to act. But here’s another cold, hard fact: Behaviour change alone will not save us either. Fifty years ago, when humans set foot on the moon, our global population was around 3.5 billion, we’ve since more than doubled that to more than 7 billion, and throughout all that time far too many people lived in terrible conditions. In another fifty years will see a global population of 10 billion. Humanity has never yet behaved in a way that can support that number of people living well. To do that we will need to change our behaviours, to a new set of ‘best world’ behaviours. Some may be old or simple ideas, but every best world behaviour will need to be based on our best knowledge, our best science, and supported by our best technology, including technology yet to be developed. Critical best world behaviours will be supporting science and fully harnessing technology: Individually, locally and nationally, and globally. Last week was NZ TechWeek, where a national festival was held with a theme of “innovation that’s good for the world”. Throughout the country a program of events demonstrating the power and potential of technology to play it’s part in our better, brighter future were on display. Demonstrations included the impact AI can have in healthcare, the power of big data in environmental protection, and the ability of connecting technologies to support community and family - to name but a few.

Like many best world behaviours, TechWeek has an ‘act locally’ component too. Each afternoon this week, at Prime in Queenstown, we’ll be recording interviews with leaders from inside science and technology - from Xero cofounder, Hamish Edwards, to NZ Hydrogen CEO, Dr Linda Wright - on how to generate, channel, and ride the next tech wave. There is a better and brighter future on offer, but it will certainly require us all to explore, employ, and embrace both our best behaviours and our smartest technologies. AJ Mason,

Resume of the Week

Rose Good and Goran Tubic As a couple, Rose and Goran have spent the last six years working on luxury yachts, managing boutique accommodation and most recently we were employed at Tara Iti, New Zealand’s only private Golf Course in the upper North Island. This couple work extremely well together and their skillsets are complimentary to each other.

Between them Rose and Goran have a myriad of skills and experience and thrive working in the hospitality industry. As managers of a private villa in Mexico they took full responsibility for the maintenance of the villa; booking clients, and ensuring guests expectations were exceeded during their entire stay.

Like most of us in Queenstown, they love travel and meeting new people. Together they dream of one day running their own sustainable, eco-friendly bed and breakfast. Their preference is to find roles where they work together and focus on bed and breakfast management.

If you are interested in knowing more about Rosie and Gulum email Rosie on rosieegood@gmail.com

Employers have access to the JobFix resume section as a component of their posting. Last week 121 new resumes were added to the resume section.
